Curve’s most ambitious year of work continues apace, as we introduce more award-winning musicals, plays and dance. We are proud to present plays by John Osborne, Amanda Whittington, Winsome Pinnock, Hanif Kureishi, Shelagh Delaney & Sally Abbott, alongside musicals including Grease, The Phantom of the Opera, Six, Once, Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, Cabaret and West Side Story. It’s a varied programme, in equal measures entertaining and challenging, which offers something for everyone. We are always keen to tell stories of Leicester and celebrate our heritage and communities; from Richard III to Memoirs of An Asian Football Casual. This summer Amanda Whittington’s Belgrave Road set play Bollywood Jane combines all the grit of a kitchen-sink drama, set against the epic sweep of Bollywood’s iconic film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Like Indian cinema, Amanda’s play is both moving and exuberant in electrifying balance. Directed by the hugely talented Siobhán Cannon-Brownlie and featuring Shah Rukh Khan (on screen at least!), the play is presented by our Community & Curve Young Company. One Under is our co-production with the critically acclaimed theatre companies Graeae and Ramps on the Moon. Winsome Pinnock’s exciting play will be given an entirely new take by these incredible theatre makers. Summer musicals include our Made at Curve production of Grease (Peter Andre and Leicester legend Darren Bennett share the role of Teen Angel across the run; you might remember when Darren stepped in at the last minute to play Scrooge and gave an astonishing performance; just one of his many celebrated Curve appearances) and National Theatre Artistic Director Rufus Norris' Olivier award winning production of Kander & Ebb’s Cabaret. Both beautifully evocative of the time they are set and given new life in these contemporary productions. The Entertainer is John Osborne’s revolutionary play about England on the cusp of huge change. Written in the 1950s, the play is being revived by director Sean O’Connor, who sets our Made at Curve production in the early 1980s. With continuing
political turmoil and Brexit uncertainty, the play has never felt more timely. Shane Richie makes his Curve debut in a role he was born to play. Shane is joined by Olivier Award-winning actress Sara Crowe, rising star Diana Vickers and RSC stalwart Pip Donaghy. In another world-premiere for Curve, we are thrilled to present Hanif Kureishi’s astonishing adaptation of his BAFTA-nominated film My Beautiful Laundrette. Hanif surfs a multitude of strikingly relevant issues in his 1985 masterpiece, from the journey of the immigrant, English working class society, women’s roles in the family and the results of Mrs Thatcher’s policies. Kureishi does all of this with bucket-loads of wit, openness, compassion and a sense of mischief at the absurdity of it all. We are thrilled Gordon Warnecke (Omar in the acclaimed film), joins an astonishing company, which includes Curve favourites Cathy Tyson (The Importance of Being Earnest), Jonny Fines (An Officer and a Gentleman) and Hareet Deol (Memoirs of an Asian Football Casual). Composers Tennant / Lowe of the iconic Pet Shop Boys have been busy composing music for the play and their work is already sounding incredible. West Side Story is set to be a highlight of the year: Ellen Kane’s choreography promises to thrill and an astonishing cast are assembled to inhabit the epic world created by designer Michael Taylor; we are thrilled to be bringing a company of the most exciting young talent working in the UK today. Keep an eye-out for our forth-coming casting announcement. Running alongside West Side Story is our worldpremiere adaptation of Giles Andreae’s Giraffes Can’t Dance. Giles’ world is richly imaginative and a beautifully colourful account of the giraffe who finds his dancing shoes and unique freedom of expression, making it a perfect Christmas treat for the little ones. With West Side Story and Giraffes Can’t Dance, it really is the Christmas season of love, dance and music for all the family at Curve. Christmas isn’t Christmas without a visit to Curve! We are proud to have developed a strong relationship with the world’s leading theatre producer Cameron Mackintosh over the past few
3
years. Cameron and his team enjoy working at Curve and next spring Cameron brings his astonishing production of The Phantom of the Opera to Leicester. The production represents a defining moment for British musical theatre, with music, design and movement all working seamlessly together, creating a truly boundary-busting spectacle. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s music is legendary and we cannot wait to hear the mysterious Phantom cast his spell over Leicester. It is a testament to our superb technical departments and Curve audiences that Cameron is returning to Leicester once again, to ensure the Phantom tour has the best possible start. Looking ahead, A Monster Calls is a profoundly moving play in an astonishingly beautiful production by Sally Cookson. The play ends with the entire audience sobbing and provides catharsis in a way only theatre can. It’s another Curve first and not to be missed. The world premieres continue into 2020: I Think We Are Alone is our co-production with acclaimed theatre makers Frantic Assembly. We are thrilled the play is written by Sally Abbott and directed by theatre legends Kathy Burke and Scott Graham. What a pleasure to welcome all of these world class theatre makers to Leicester! Although we are adding more seats to our iconic auditorium this summer, we still won’t have enough seats for all shows to meet demand (a great challenge for any theatre to have, we’re sure you’ll agree!). You can get ahead of the curve and ensure you are the first to hear about our shows and have priority access to tickets by becoming a member. Full details are available on this page. If you’re under 26, you can join for free! We look forward to welcoming you to Curve soon. If you see us around, please say hello and let us know what you think of the work on our stages.

TUE 27 – SAT 31 AUG • THEATRE Said to be one of the greatest plays of the 20th Century by Michael Billington (Chief Theatre Critic of The Guardian), see the famous story of The Entertainer at Curve this August. For the first time since its original premiere in 1957, John Osborne’s classic is given a vibrant new setting and an electric new vision in director Sean O’Connor’s exciting production. Shane Richie takes on the role of Archie Rice, memorably created both on stage and screen by Laurence Olivier, and is joined by Diana Vickers and the Olivier award-winning, Sara Crowe. Archie Rice is a junkshop of stereotypical male frailties: someone who hits the bottle a little too hard and dodges taxes a little too often. Despite being a washed-up showman playing the Summer season in 1980’s Britain, he is determined that the show must go on – even if no one is there to see it. Away from the glamour of Archie Rice’s life in showbiz, home-life is hardly a star-studded affair. As Archie’s dysfunctional family continues to fall to pieces, his son dangerously sails with the Task Force to liberate the Falklands whilst his daughter actively campaigns against the war. Expect drama, expect scandal, expect a soundtrack of 70s & 80s music and expect a whole load of classic British entertainment. PERFORMANCE TIMES Tue, Wed, Fri & Sat 7.30pm Thu & Sat 2.15pm Thu 7pm

FRI 20 SEP – SAT 5 OCT • STUDIO For our autumn Made at Curve drama, Artistic Director Nikolai Foster brings Hanif Kureishi’s iconic and Oscarnominated screenplay My Beautiful Laundrette to the stage. Set in London during the 1980s, My Beautiful Laundrette tells the story of young British Pakistani, Omar, who transforms his Uncle’s run-down laundrette into a thriving business. After being confronted by a fascist gang, Omar recognises school-friend Johnny and uses their history to diffuse the situation. As they renovate the laundrette together, love blossoms between them. This culture clash comedy is also a subversive work of social realism, sprinkled with magic and joy running through the rich veins of Kureishi’s writing. This bold new production of Kureishi's ground-breaking film, co-produced with Belgrade Theatre Coventry, Everyman Theatre Cheltenham and Leeds Playhouse, explores cultural conflict, gender equality, class and generational strife, all presented against a funky backdrop of 80s music and culture. Composers Tennant/Lowe of the Pet Shop Boys, have created original music for this production. If you enjoyed our productions of Jonathan Harvey’s Beautiful Thing and Riaz Khan/Dougal Irvine’s Memoirs Of An Asian Football Casual, this play is for you. MON 4 NOV • THEATRE For his first work created in the UK, Haitian choreographer Jeanguy Saintus re-envisions The Rite of Spring introducing the sacred arts of Haiti along with contemporary global issues in his bold approach to the near riot-causing original by Vaslav Nijinsky. Performed alongside The Rite of Spring is Amaury Lebrun’s Left Unseen which explores inclusion and isolation and how we rely on our five senses to find our place and navigate the world. In isolation there is often stillness and silence and also unpredictable disturbance and chaos. The eight dancers embody these different states creating an aesthetically beautiful and emotive piece of dance. SAT 23 NOV – SAT 11 JAN • THEATRE New York City, West Side, 1957. In the midst of gang rivalry and racial tensions, love at first sight strikes between Tony, a founding member of the White-American Jets and Maria, the sister of Bernardo, leader of the Puerto Rican Sharks. In the face of danger, the two young lovers continue to meet in secret – but the Jets and the Sharks have one last rumble to fight out. Inspired by Shakespeare’s classic tragedy Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story represents one of the greatest musicals of all time, filled with romance, aggression, heartbreak, and a timeless musical score that will be performed by a magnificent 15 piece orchestra and includes the unforgettable songs Tonight, America and I Feel Pretty. Do not miss this year’s must-see Christmas production!

CHRISTMAS
MUSICAL
33
We go behind the scenes with Director Nikolai Foster to discover the story behind our spectacular new Christmas musical. Why do you think West Side Story is one of the greatest and best-loved musicals of all time? Musicals are the most complex and collaborative art form in live theatre. It is always challenging to balance the book, music and lyrics, ensuring they are supported by the direction, choreography and design. It requires an astonishing vision to bring it all together and a dash of magic. Few musicals achieve a near-perfect alchemy of these ingredients; West Side Story is perhaps the greatest example of all of these elements working beautifully together. The creators were at the very top of their respective professions and worked collaboratively to realise something groundbreaking, contemporary and truly beautiful. A rare feat, that has been seldom matched since.
together. Audiences are always excited to see Michael’s designs and with West Side Story, he is really raising the bar to another level. I haven’t seen him this excited about a piece in a long time and he even sings songs from the show in our meetings! Michael and I have been working hard to create a depiction of New York City in the 1950s: part war-zone and part playground, where the remarkable lives of these characters are played out. Unlike White Christmas last year (which is transferring to the Dominion Theatre in London’s West End later this year), West Side Story will exist only at Curve; therefore, Michael and I are able to exploit and use every nook and cranny of Curve’s magnificent stage without the technical challenges of making it fit into other theatres.
Are there any particular elements you’re excited to work on? It is always inspiring to meet new talent and collaborate with actors at the start of their careers. West Side Story demands a young cast, who you believe are members of gangs, growing up in the harsh streets of Hell’s Kitchen in New York City in the 1950s. They’ve grown up during a World War and now see a different kind of war in the streets around them. The artists need to imaginatively create this reality, in addition to executing extraordinary choreography and being able to sing some of the most challenging material ever written for the musical stage. Working with our casting director Kay Magson, it has been an honour to meet so many talented young people who are going to ensure our production of West Side Story is totally electrifying and speaks to our 21st century audiences.
Do you have a favourite song or moment from the show already? I don’t really have favourites of anything, as my job is to objectively tell the story and serve each moment. Therefore personal preference doesn’t really play a part in any of what I do (although taste is crucial). However, I recognise that the Tonight Quintet at the end of Act I is one of the greatest achievements in musical theatre. The musical structure, lyrics and characters’ lives colliding and interacting, is mind-bogglingly brilliant. How this sequence was written / constructed, I have no idea; it is an incredible call-to-arms for anybody working on West Side Story.
What will Ellen Kane bring to the choreography? Everything! Ellen is an exceptional talent and West Side Story at Curve will cement her reputation as one of the most exciting and significant choreographers of her generation. Her work is truly breath-taking and seeing her work with actors in the auditions has been an inspiring and formative experience for me, challenging my practice and forcing me to think about our approach to West Side Story at Curve. How will Michael Taylor represent New York with the set design? It is always a great pleasure to collaborate with Michael; this will be our third Christmas production
Director, Nikolai Foster

Count Arthur Strong
BENWONDER HART SUN 29 MAR • THEATRE
Is There Anybody Out There? THU 20 FEB • STUDIO As well as being the all-round entertainer we all know and love from the telly, Count Arthur Strong is also a lifelong fan of astronomy, since having been given a microscope, or whatever it is they use, for Christmas when he was a small precocious baby. In fact, it’s said the first word he spoke was ‘Uranus’. In this, his brand-new show, he seamlessly combines the very best showbiz entertainment you’ll currently find, in the world, (possibly?) as he wrestles with some of the big questions that other all-round entertainers shy away from.
Britain’s Got Talent 2019 finalist, West End star and multi award-winning magician Ben Hart is embarking on his debut solo tour. Described by David Walliams as ‘the living embodiment of magic’, Ben has recently played to royalty, heads of state and celebrities, in West End theatres, international arenas and on dozens of UK and international TV appearances (including his own series on BBC Three, The One Show and BBC One’s Now You See It). Expect his most mind-blowing and exciting magic in a show that shines a light on magic, life, the universe and the darkest corners of your imaginations. With the simplest of props, using the objects and minds of the audience, Ben Hart conjures an altogether new kind of magic. Age Recommendation: 12+

ADDITIONAL SERVICES
CAPTIONED PERFORMANCES (CAP)
TOUCH TOURS (TT)
SIGNED PERFORMANCES IN BRITISH SIGN LANGUAGE (BSL)
INFRA-RED & INDUCTION LOOP HEARING SYSTEMS
Screens are displayed in the auditorium running the text (just like subtitles). There is usually a ‘Captioner’ who will make adjustments to the live dialogue as the performance happens.
A sign language interpreter stands at the front of the auditorium/forestage to translate the dialogue into BSL during the performance.
AUDIO-DESCRIBED PERFORMANCES (AD)
An ‘Audio Describer’ describes what is happening on stage to customers who have collected an audio-describing headset from the Box Office.
DEMENTIA FRIENDLY PERFORMANCES (DF)
Dementia friendly performances are tailored to meet the specific needs of people living with dementia. They include adaptations to the show, clearer visual markers and signage in the physical environment, and a relaxed attitude to movement and audience responses during the show.
RELAXED PERFORMANCES (RP)
Tailored for customers who would benefit from a more relaxed performance environment. Audience members are free to make noise and, while the theatre doors will close, audience members can come and go as they please. We also reserve a quiet zone and set up a screening of the performance for anybody needing time out of the show.
Explore the auditorium, set and characters through touch prior to the performance to get a sense of what will be happening on stage, and experience the different voices you will hear.
Available in our Theatre and Studio. Please ask at the Box Office for a headset.
ASSISTANCE DOGS
Dog spaces are available upon request; please let us know during the booking process and a seat next to the aisle will be reserved for you. Alternatively, a member of staff will care for your dog during the performance. We can also provide drinking water for your dog.
