Welcome

Welcome to this new season and a brochure jam-packed with more plays, dance, musicals and special events than ever before. We pride ourselves on offering something for everybody, whether it’s seeing world-class dance (Akram Khan), a mega musical (Grease), a classic play (The Importance Of Being Earnest) or a sticky treat for families and young peeps (The Twits) – we hope you’ll find something Made at Curve just for you. We also have a world-class group of producers and theatre-makers visiting us this season; we are honoured Belarus Free Theatre will be premiering their new work, Burning Doors. Leicester is built on the extraordinary contribution of Ugandan-Asian refugees, so it is fitting we continue to welcome refugees and theatre-makers who have been exiled from their homelands. There’s much to celebrate in our mighty city as it continues to grow in confidence and look towards the future with renewed vigour and optimism. Our commitment to providing opportunities for everybody to experience theatre has never been greater, and we are bursting at the seams with opportunities to get involved: our Family Days are fuller than ever, the Curve Community Company are rehearsing for our summer musical Bugsy Malone, Curve Young Company is expanding and we are planning our second Dementia Friendly performance, which will take place during the run of Grease. All of this activity requires investment and we are indebted to Leicester City Council and Arts Council England for their continued support. We are also incredibly grateful to you for coming on this journey with us. If you’d like to make your commitment to Curve even more special, why not consider buying a seat in the auditorium? (pg 38). It’s a totally unique way to support the work we are doing. Lastly, this October our Chairman, Philip Tasker steps down from our Board. Philip has been a driving force in the success of our theatre and on behalf of everyone here, we would like to thank him for his brilliant leadership, endless support and commitment. We will miss him greatly.

Following last year’s Sweet Charity, National Youth Music Theatre return to Curve with electric, rock musical Spring Awakening. Caught between childhood and adulthood, this poignant story follows a group of teenagers who live in a world without any answers. Led by the headstrong and charismatic Melchior Gabor, they are forced to educate themselves on life’s biggest issues and revolt against the adults who suppress them. But as the group learns more about the world around them, their own lives begin to spiral out of control. With a Tony Award-winning score of punchy anthems, this gritty and raw portrayal of youth will be directed by Curve Artistic Director, Nikolai Foster. Recommended for ages 14+

The Moscow State Circus returns to the UK with its latest and greatest production to date, based on the Russian folklore story of Cvetik-Semicvetik, or “the flower with seven colours” by Valentin Petrovich Katayev where each of the petals represent a wish and is the perfect back drop for what is undoubtedly the greatest and most famous circus on earth. Professor Wacko and his crazy side kick Natalia Mezentceva invite the audience to a wondrous and mysterious enchanted garden, a place where dreams come true and a place to see magnificent feats of human achievement, the like of which have never been witnessed in Great Britain before. Our Loveable Buffoons guide us through this tantalising tale, granting wishes to the beautiful Kushka Veslovskiy who plays Zhenya, surrounded by a multitude of flying, back-flipping, juggling and roller-skating performers.

BELARUS FREE THEATRE

Photograph: Petr Pavlensky

“One of the bravest and most inspired underground troupes on the planet” New York Times (2015)

TUE 23 – SAT 27 AUG, 7.30PM • STUDIO In this blazingly contemporary new work, Belarus Free Theatre combine forces with Pussy Riot’s Maria Alyokhina to share stories of persecuted artists living under dictatorship who will not be silenced. Burning Doors interrogates what happens to people when they are declared enemies of the state simply for making art. How the meaning of home and displacement reframes under systematic coercion and ideological warfare. This brand new production blends sensuous theatricality and vigorous physicality to shine a light on total suppression of artistic freedoms, drawn from the real-life stories of iconoclastic Russian performance artist Petr Pavlensky, incarcerated Ukrainian filmmaker Oleg Sentsov and Pussy Riot’s Maria Alyokhina. Each performance is followed by a post-show discussion with the artists and special guests (up to one hour). Created in partnership with ArtReach as part of Journeys Festival International. Performed in Russian and Belarusian with English surtitles. Contains nudity and scenes of a graphic nature. Recommended for ages 16+ www.belarusfreetheatre.com www.journeysfestival.com

MICK PERRIN WORLDWIDE IN ASSOCIATION WITH MANDY WARD ARTIST MANAGEMENT PRESENTS

The Joy Of Mincing is Julian Clary’s celebration of 30 years as a camp comedian. There is so much to tell you; the ups and downs of his sordid love life, the true and heart stopping account of how he saved Dame Joan Collins’ life, and don’t start him on the perils of his DIY electrical home enema kit. On stage Julian will proudly wear his well-deserved M.B.E. (Mincer of the British Empire). It was the last thing he expected to receive when he knelt down in front of Prince Charles in the scullery at Buckingham Palace… And because Julian gives and gives (until it hurts) he will be handing out honours to a lucky few in the audience too. This is Julian at his filthy best. Live and unplugged. Recommended for ages 16+ TICKETS £23* DISCOUNTED TICKETS For more information about ticket discounts, visit www.curveonline.co.uk

THU 3 – SAT 5 NOV, 7.30PM • THEATRE

TICKETS £32.50* – £14.50*

Following a residency at Curve in the Summer of 2015, award-winning choreographer and dancer Akram Khan returns with his brand new, full-length production, Until the Lions. In this partial adaptation of poet Karthika Naïr’s book Until The Lions: Echoes From The Mahabharata, an original reworking of the epic Mahabharata, Khan uses kathak and contemporary dance to tell the tale of Amba, a princess abducted on her wedding day and stripped of her honour, who invokes the gods to seek revenge. Bringing together some of the original team from his acclaimed solo DESH, Khan explores the notion and the physical expression of gender. Until The Lions is one of Khan’s most startling and spectacular works to date, in which he performs alongside two of his company dancers and four musicians. Running time: 1 hour (no interval)

The Collector by Henry Naylor

THU 10 & FRI 11 NOV, 7.45PM • STUDIO 2003. Mazrat Prison, Iraq. Previously one of Saddam’s most notorious torture houses where more than 10,000 people died, the prison is now under Allied command. Nassir works here, translating for the American interrogators. He’s local, pro-Western, determined to bring liberal values to his country and is about to get married to Zoya, his sweetheart. But when he is recognised by Faisal, new prisoner and psychotic supporter of the old regime, his life becomes a living hell. Born out of Henry Naylor’s own experiences of a visit to Bagram Airbase in 2003, The Collector is a compelling tale of murder, evil and betrayal set in occupied Iraq. One of the most highly-acclaimed shows at the 2014 Edinburgh Festival, it won a prestigious Scotsman Fringe First Award, which was followed by a sold-out run at London’s Arcola Theatre. “Mr. Twit was a twit. He was born a twit. And, now at the age of sixty, he was a bigger twit than ever.” SAT 10 DEC – SUN 15 JAN • STUDIO Mr Twit has a very hairy face. His beard is spiky and smelly. It also contains cornflakes, sardines and even some Stilton. Mrs Twit is equally as foul and she hates Mr Twit just as much as Mr Twit hates her. They also have a particularly sticky trick to catch Roly-Poly birds for their bird pies. But not for much longer because the monkeys have a cunning plan to teach those terrible Twits a lesson. Audience members are free to make noise and, while the theatre doors will close, audience members can come and go as they please. We also reserve a quiet zone and set up a screening of the performance for anybody needing time out of the auditoria.

WHEELCHAIR SPACES IN ALL OF OUR PERFORMANCE AREAS

All public areas are accessible to wheelchair users, including lift access to the circle level. We have allocated wheelchair spaces for every performance, both in the Theatre and Studio. If you wish to transfer to a theatre seat we can store the wheelchair upon request.

ACCESSIBLE TOILETS

Available on both the stalls and circle levels. We also have a Changing Places accessible toilet with adult hoist on the foyer level, next to door 4 of the Theatre.

ACCESSIBLE PARKING

Available on Southampton Street, in the NCP Rutland Centre Car Park adjacent to Curve, and we have a drop-off point on Rutland Street.

JOIN OUR FREE ACCESS REGISTER

Our Access Register Scheme is designed to assist customers with additional needs. We store information on your personal requirements so that you don’t need to resubmit evidence each time you book. Once registered, you will be entitled to a free essential carer ticket for each performance. To become an Access Register Member please visit our website or call the Ticket Office on 0116 242 3595.
