Curvetheatre Cover images: Calamity Jane, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and The Car Man.
WELCOME Since opening in 2008, it has been our ambition to be the home of new musicals. Over three years ago, we set out on our journey to create a brand new musical adaptation of Sue Townsend’s best-selling novel The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 ¾. We had the huge privilege of being able to work with Sue on the show and it’s hugely exciting to be opening this world premiere production right here in her beloved home town, bringing Adrian Mole’s story back to life – not only for his fans, but also for a new generation. Following last year’s successful launch, our Inside Out Festival returns bigger and brighter, showcasing the very best of the local talent in our region curated by Associate Director, Suba Das, featuring cutting-edge new theatre, workshops and professional masterclasses. Our monthly Family Days also continue with a whole host of activities, games and workshops for little ones to enjoy accompanied by family-friendly performances in our Theatre and Studio and our Little Curve shows. Many of the UK’s leading theatre companies also return to Curve this spring and we welcome English National Ballet and Northern Ballet for the first time. The National Theatre returns with the multi award-winning The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and Matthew Bourne brings for the first time his internationally acclaimed dance sensation, The Car Man following the phenomenal success of the company’s previous visits to Leicester with Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty. We are also embarking on an exciting new journey at Curve. In December, we say So Long, Farewell to Paul Kerryson and welcome to Nikolai Foster who joins us in the New Year as Artistic Director. We hope you will join us in welcoming him to Leicester. Fiona Allan Chief Executive
Paul Kerryson Artistic Director
PS. You may also have noticed some changes online too. We are delighted to unveil our brand new website www.curveonline.co.uk, which we hope will dramatically improve your digital experience of everything Curve has to offer! I feel hugely inspired to be joining the incredible team at Curve and proud to be your new Artistic Director. Paul Kerryson’s legacy is extraordinary and it is an honour to be taking up the baton from such a respected and well-loved director. I am thrilled to introduce you to some of my work in this new season. Curve’s collaboration with De Montfort University continues with our production of Timberlake Wertenbaker’s beautiful celebration of the transformative power of theatre, Our Country’s Good. Later in the season, our co-production of Jonathan Harvey’s funny and moving play, Beautiful Thing and my touring production of the musical Calamity Jane are followed by a brand new production of Shakespeare’s great thriller Richard III. Having been blown away by Curve’s recent community productions, I am very much looking forward to working with the exceptionally talented local community on this magnificent play, celebrating the extraordinary talent and heritage of this unique region. I am enjoying living in Leicester enormously and look forward to meeting you all, as we welcome this exciting new chapter in Curve’s history together. Fuelled by heat and desire, the inhabitants are driven into an unstoppable spiral of greed, lust, betrayal and revenge. Featuring Lez Brotherston’s epic design and Matthew Bourne’s vivid storytelling with music by Terry Davies and Rodion Shchedrin’s Carmen Suite (after Bizet’s Carmen), The Car Man is another spectacular production from the UK’s most popular dance theatre company.
