INSIDE LOOK TO KEKE’S

BEAUT Y BAG

BY KEKE SIMOT

Find out what’s in our Editor’s beauty bag this spring!

O

nce I love a product, I tend to marry it for life. It is usually very hard to get me to cheat on my favorite products. But when seasons change, so does my bag. Some of my faves, I rotate in and out from season to season, then I may run across a product I just can’t live without. This spring’s bag I have a mix of some oldies and new goodies.

1. BYE BYE UNDER EYE™ CONCEALER - BY IT COSMETICS The full-coverage, waterproof concealer that I am never without. Bye Bye Under Eye is the best concealer that I have ever used. It goes on smooth and blends amazingly well. Some days, there’s no need for me to even put on any foundation after applying it.

2. URBAN DECAY ALL NIGHTER MAKEUP SETTING SPRAY Rain, shine, sleet, or snow, Urban Decay’s setting spray has never let me down. The spray goes on light, lasts over 12 hours, and keeps makeup from fading, smudging, or melting down.

12

CURVY | APRIL 2017

3. SMASHBOX BE LEGENDARY LIPSTICK TABLOID My favorite spring lipstick color is Tabloid. You can find the color in Smashbox’s Be Legendary Lipstick collection. Tabloid is a cream lipstick with high-pigment in purple with a pinkish hue and a pearl finish. It’s also moisturizing satin-smooth formula softens and protects lips with shea butter and vitamins C and E.

4. AMOR US 100% HUMAN HAIR EYELASHES#WSP I have a thing for nicely manicured eyebrows and lashes, so I have always adored Adele’s eyes. One of my favorite celebrity make up artists, Laura Koski, told me that Adele’s makeup artist mentioned in a article the exact lashes he uses on her. I did a bit of research -more like stalking- and found the article. From that day forward, I only wear Amor Us brand lands in WSP. It is my year-round beauty bag staple.

5. SEPHORA’S WATERPROOF EYELINER Sometimes getting the big, fancy brands aren’t necessary. I love a good cat eye, but my eyes tend to get a little watery

at times. One day, I got fed up with my liner smearing, so I walked into Sephora and just grabbed the first waterproof eyeliner that I saw and have been in love ever since. The liner has a creamy texture, retractable, built-in sharpener, and smudge tip. Long lasting when coupled with the setting spray I mentioned.

6 & 7. MAYBELLINE® FACE STUDIO MASTER PRIME™ // SMASHBOX PHOTO FINISH LUMINIZING FOUNDATION PRIMER – TIED FOR MY TWO FAVE! I lost my Smashbox primer while traveling. My husband stopped at a grocery store (of all places?!) and I ran to the cosmetic isle desperately seeking a quick primer replacement. I picked up the Maybelline® Face Studio Master Prime and it was the best $6.99 I have ever spent in my life. It is by far the best inexpensive primer on the market. I tend to have dry skin patches here and there so the blur and smooth version works amazingly for me. The

8. GIVENCHY NUDES NACRES SHIMMERING NUDES EYE PALETTE This palette has a subtle, sexy look that I really adore. It is a shimmering palette with nudes, golds, and browns. It isn’t overpowering with the shimmer, so it could be a great date night palette for you. The pigment’s crafted multireflective pearlescent particles of different sizes create a very beautiful, deep 3D effect.

9. URBAN DECAY FULL-SPECTRUM PALETTE If subtle isn’t your thing, then you will love Urban Decay’s Full-Spectrum Palette. The palette has 21 playful, spring colors that you can test out your blending skills with. But you have to hurry because it is a limited edition collection. $21.00

master prime still doesn’t have the true flawless hi-def smooth finish of the Smashbox primer but I still carry both in my bag. CURVY | APRIL 2017

2017’S GREAT GLITTER BOOM

S

BY JAZZLYN KIRKLAND

o far in 2017, there have been quite a few trends that have come and gone, but one has made a huge impact. New companies

are coming out of nowhere offering this product to models working the runway. “The Great Glitter Boom” of 2017 is here and is ready to leave some serious shine. I mean, seriously, what could make you feel more magical and majestic than adding some sparkle to your look? With the whole world in a glitter frenzy right now, there are so many brands and companies to choose from. The options are endless, offering everything from your good ol’ body glitter to non-transferable glitter lipstick, and everything in between. And if you know me, you know that I LOVE ME SOME GLITTER, HONEY! Sorry, I got excited. But, yes, I am a huge fan of all things glitter and now with so many options, I have a pretty hearty collection of these delectable mystical sparkles. I’ve got chunky glitter, fine glitter, body glitter, iridescent glitter, heart glitter, star glitter, hair glitter…the list just goes on and on (in my Bubba Gump Voice).

14

CURVY | APRIL 2017

With so many people inquiring which glitters are good for what, “Can you put the glitter you use on your eyes in your hair?” “How do you get the sparkles to stay in place?” and other questions along those lines, I’ve decided to make a little cheat sheet for you. Curvy Magazine and I teamed up to searched far and wide for the best glitters, and below is a nice little list of which glitters go where. Now, have fun and sparkle, you little majestic beings you!

LIGHT UP THOSE LIDS THE SPARKLING POWDER I absolutely love J Cat Beauty Products, I love their highlighters and I LIVE for their finely milled cosmetic glitter. This glitter is my go-to eyelid, eye shadow sparkle. This glitter works best when applied with a glitter primer.

FLASHY FACE FLARE LITTLE BLACK DIAMOND Wanting to add some sparkle to your mug? Little Black Diamond’s loose glitter will give you life. This glitter can be used on your face and body, and when I tell you this stuff is iridescent, I mean it. Every angle with this glitter gives you a different color and shade. You’ll be a bright, walking rainbow!

LOVABLE LIP LUSTER FANTASTIC FACES

I love it, because you not only sparkle with this, you glisten. It smells amazing and has an amazing staying power without getting all over your clothes.

A LITTLE FLARE FOR YOUR HAIR THE GLITTER ARMY I found the glitter army online and even though they are newer to the glitter game, I feel like a lot of these big brands need to strap on their big girl pants and step their game up because the glitter army is coming in hot. Their mixture of custom, loose glitter is my favorite to mix in with a little styling gel to add a little sauce to my hair. I love it for music festivals and edgy hairstyles.

HOLDING YOU DOWN NYX GLITTER PRIMER & CITY COLOR: SPARKLE & SHINE GLITTER PRIMER

Glitter on your lips, you say? Yes! I do say, go for the gusto with Fantastic Faces glitter lipstick. I love the look of this bold, blinging lip and I love, even more, that it’s basically transfer proof. So, you can run around looking good and glistening without being worried about having a mouth full of glitter at the end of the day.

This is the only section that I just had to choose 2 products instead of one favorite. I love these two products for different uses. I favor the City Color: Sparkle & Shine Primer for adhering glitter to my eyelids. The application and the consistency of the City Color Primer is perfect for precision work and clean lines.

BODY BLING TOM FORD SOLEIL BLANC

Now, NYX Glitter Primer I love for every other part of the body. I like the NYX product when applied with your hands on your face, body, and hair. It is perfect for festival glitter because it lasts through all the sweating and dancing and doesn’t cake up on you after a few hours.

Ok, so, I am not going to lie, but The Migos song “Bad and Boujee” starting playing in my head as I started to talk about this glitter. Let. Me. Tell. You…this body shimmer and perfume by Tom Ford is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

5 TIPS FOR CLEARER SKIN BY DR. STEVE HEWITT

1. RELAX! The cause of spots can be due to a hormonal imbalance. The stress hormones trigger greater reactivity in the skin, resulting in a tendency for pores to block and spots to form.

2. KEEP CLEAN! It’s important to cleanse your complexion to remove all excess oil, dirt and dead skin cells. Do this twice a day with a face wash, such as Clearasil Daily Clear Skin Perfecting Wash, which clears existing spots and helps to prevent new ones from forming. Blocked pores are the first step in spot formation, so keep them clean and the spots will keep away.

3. EAT RIGHT! Diet has some influence on your skin, so try to get enough fruits and veggies packed with antioxidants to reduce inflammation. Vitamin C is also great for skin healing.

4. WATER, WATER, WATER! Skin hydration is important in maintaining healthy skin, so get plenty of water down your neck and you are on the right track!

5. PREVENTION! Using a medicated wash with a gentle exfoliating action, such as Clearasil, will keep pores open and prevent spots from forming. Treatment is a combination of anti-bacterial effect to suppress the P acnes bacteria, anti-inflammatory action to reduce visible redness and spot size, and providing the skin with the right conditions for rapid healing. Products such as Clearasil Ultra’s Rapid Action Treatment Cream, containing salicylic acid, will have all three actions and produce visible results, quickly. Clearasil Ultra’s Rapid Action Treatment Cream reduces spot size and redness in just four hours, the fastest treatment claim from the range.

THE BEST

BEAUTY TREATMENT SALAD BOWL IS IN YOUR

O

nce spring arrives, we slowly begin to shift our tastes away from comforting stews and bowls of piping hot soup and we rediscover an almost forgotten array of fresh produce. Take a step into any produce section, or better yet, wind your way through the stalls at the farmers market, and everywhere you look it’s a feast for the eyes. Spring is just the beginning of things and as the season moves along there are more and more colorful, vibrant vegetables tempting their way into our kitchens. Fruits and vegetables are a powerhouse of nutrients, rich in vitamin A and vitamin C, they provide heart-healthy fiber, power up the immune system, provide extra energy and best of all, when you’ve been eating a vegetable rich diet, you will undoubtedly receive many compliments on your skin; people will wonder what you’ve been doing and most likely, be a little envious of your vitality. And the good news with fruits and vegetables is that there’s a lot more to them than just their nutrient value. They are naturally high in antioxidants; an antioxidant is a molecule that prevents your cells from oxidation. Oxidation is destructive to the body and most often occurs because of stress. Once your cells oxidate, your body is more prone to disease and while that’s a long-term effect, there’s a short-term effect that is immediately visible--to your looks. Without those amazing antioxidants in fruits and vegetables, your skin is likely to look lifeless and dry and you’re more prone to sun damage and even wrinkles. Spring is the perfect time to treat your skin and your palate to a delicious salad that tops the charts in nutrients and antioxidants; full of fiber and rounded out with highquality protein, this salad will keep you full, stabilize your blood sugar and satisfy your sweet-salty-crunchy cravings.

YOUR SCALE YOU WANT A SIDE OF SABOTAGE WITH THAT?

D

BY ANDREA AMADOR

o you feel compelled to weigh yourself all the time because you’re overweight? Are you sick and tired of having your scale tell you how you’re entitled to feel and what kind of day you’re going to have? I’ll just bet that depending upon the number shown; you’ll either feel like celebrating or commiserating. I’ve got news for you! Your scale isn’t your horoscope and it’s high time you reclaimed your power over this miserable piece of scrap metal. Here’s why:

YOUR THINKING BODY AND THE MIND/BODY CONNECTION Most overweight people would swear on a stack of bibles that you have to weigh yourself to check your progress. For years, I agreed with that belief until I became a professional empowerment coach and began to study what is known as the mind/body connection. Simply put, anything that affects your mind, affects your body and vice-versa. Let’s say that you love donuts and someone offers you a whole plateful of all your favorites. You think about eating them and immediately your mouth fills with saliva. This is an example of your mind and thoughts affecting your body.

WHY YOUR SCALE COULD BE SABOTAGING YOUR PROGRESS Have you ever tried on a pair of jeans that are too tight and immediately you feel horrible about yourself? Isn’t that the quickest route to a binge? This is your body affecting your mind. Scientific research has proven that there is a complex system of communication that goes on consistently between your mind and body. This goes on behind the scenes without you having any conscious awareness of it. Scientists have isolated neurotransmitters (chemical messengers of thought) and discovered that they are in

24

CURVY | APRIL 2017

every cell of our bodies. That means that your body and mind are always standing at attention, waiting patiently for you to issue commands. The things you tell yourself will determine how you feel and what you do. As dieters or weight watchers, we tend to think of ourselves as fat and we learn all the habits and ways of thinking that reinforce our belief that we have no control over food. This is called the diet mentality.

If you want to get thinner, you have to start listening to your body – not the scale! BREAK FREE OF THE DIET MENTALITY BY LISTENING TO AND RESPECTING YOUR BODY Since August 2006, I have been committed to changing many of my weight watching habits and learning how to live, eat and think like a naturally slender woman. My experience has taught me that if you want to get thinner, you have to start listening to your body, not the scale. You must learn how to master your relationship with food. The problem is not what you’re eating, but what’s eating you! Constantly monitoring your weight on the scale keeps you thinking like a fat person and you can’t be thin if you’re thinking fat. Naturally slim people never weigh themselves and therefore probably have no idea of their weight. This is

Constantly monitoring your weight on the scale keeps you thinking like a fat person and you can’t be thin if you’re thinking you’re fat! because they don’t rely on an external authority to tell them how to control their eating. They have a peaceful, balanced and healthy relationship with food and they are guided to eat by listening to their bodies.

MY EXPERIENCE AS A FORMER SCALE HOPPER For years, I had a bathroom scale inside a large walk-in closet in my bathroom. Each morning before I dressed, I would jump on the scale and weigh myself, and then I would relieve my bladder and start all over again. It was a maddening and crazy cycle that kept me feeling horribly shameful. One day, when I was living in my guilty little world of scale obsession, I was presented with a great opportunity to speak at a networking event to introduce myself to other businesswomen in my local community. It meant coming out from behind the safety of doing teleclasses and phone coaching and presenting myself in the flesh as The Juicy Woman. But I knew I wasn’t at the top of my game. The night before I’d eaten more than I wanted to and my body felt bloated and fat. Normally I’d be a lot more confident, but because it had been awhile since I had spoken live, I was nervous and upset, fearing that the women there would judge me as being a big, fat fraud. After all, most people would reason that a plus size woman has no right in the world calling herself a body image and self-esteem expert. It just doesn’t compute for many people, and that morning, it didn’t add up for me either.

chips will probably show up as a gain so as long as you expect it…What’s the big deal? No matter what the scale says, it won’t matter because you’re stronger than that. After all, you live and breathe this stuff. You teach it all the time. You already know how your thoughts affect your body, so you won’t let that happen. Right?” I swore up and down that no matter what, I could handle it. But I couldn’t. I watched in the mirror as my tears rolled down my cheeks, knowing that there was no way I could go to that meeting. I had lost the magic. The Juicy Woman had left the room. I’ve since learned how to overcome those types of sabotages and upsets using a simple tapping process called Emotional Freedom Technique. I’ll teach you all about it another time. But for now please learn from my mistake. Remember that when you get on the scale, you will create unnecessary stress and tension which can sabotage your progress. Protect yourself from the heat, and step away from the scale. I promise you won’t be sorry.

As I was getting dressed for the day, I made this incredibly stupid bargain, goading myself to get on the scale. Here’s how it went. “Andrea, you don’t have anything to worry about, sweetie. We’re just checking here. What’s the harm in knowing? Knowledge is power. Right? You know that those tortilla CURVY | APRIL 2017

eet our CURVY Cutie of the month, Chardline Chanel-Faiteau, the Plus Size Beausion. This 28year old Boston, Massachusetts fashion and beauty trend blogger began fashion blogging in 2013 and is currently working as an Education and Outreach Investigator for Boston’s Mayor’s Office of Fair Housing and Equity. “In recent years, the ubiquity of plus-size blogs radically changed the way I viewed the plus-sized industry, plussized women, and more importantly, myself. I attribute the robustness of the plus-size industry to bloggers, designers, and merchants alike that serve the plus-size community in their respective capacities,” says Chardline. Although Chardline has a passion for Fashion, she also takes time to reinforce the importance of a healthy and fit lifestyle: “There was a period in my life where I did not want to work out in front of people. For some reason, when I look at fit gurus, I can never see myself in them. When looking at them, I always see a person who is thin and has epic facial features. When I looked at myself, I see a woman with lots of love handles and a double chin that wouldn’t cease movement even after I stopped moving.” Chardline overcame that fear by not letting the fear of “perception” rob her from having fun during her workouts. That’s right, when she was asked by a Zumba teacher to be recorded for a workout that he wanted to post, she instantly said yes and grooved her way through what she thought she would never get over, the negative body image she held so close to herself. With over 20K+ monthly views and over 85K+ social media followers, Chardline Chanel-Faiteau is the style, beauty, and fitness blogger you want to pay attention to. Her blog, Plus Size Beausion, curates fashion & beauty trends, engages her audience in her fitness and health journey all while giving interactive updates on her travels around the globe and promoting body positive spaces. Chardline actively works to bring awareness to the underrepresentation of plus size women in mainstream media and continues to advocate on their behalf. Sexier You FIVE TIPS FOR A

THIS SPRING!

BY BRANDY EDWARDS

Y

ou don’t have to lose 100 pounds to feel sexy. If you love who you are but don’t like the way you feel about your body, there are minor adjustments you can make.

GET IN SHAPE You exercise to lose weight, but exercise has more than one purpose. It can be a form of stress-relief. It can also help you tone your abs, thighs, arms and butt. You can do simple exercises like walking, squats, or purchase and elliptical for home use. Thirty minutes of activity a day can improve your health and your mood.

ADD COLOR

We understand why you love to wear black. Black is slimming and it allows you to hide imperfections. However, you don’t want to walk around looking like your going to a funeral everyday. Bright colors make you feel good. In the wintertime, when the weather is gloomy, liven up your wardrobe. Add blues, reds, and purples. Color says, “I look good because I feel good!”

You love soda, you love margaritas, and you love green tea’s. However, the things that taste the best aren’t always good for you. If you slip off the water bandwagon, it’s okay. Forgive yourself and start drinking more water. Just because you are curvy does not mean you can ignore your health. Water is essential for healthy living. So treat your body right!

Bright colors make you feel good. In the wintertime, when the weather is gloomy, liven up your wardrobe.

THE RIGHT FIT

SAVVY SHOPPER

Curvy women are fashion-forward. However, many designers don’t make clothes to fit our body type. Do your research. There are great designers out there making clothes specifically for plus sized women and men. The better your clothes fit, the more confident you will feel when you wear them. Say good by to muffin tops, camel toe, and plumbers crack. Say, “HELLO!” to a sexier you!

Find patterns and styles that highlight your curves. If you are lucky enough to have large breast, don’t hide them. They don’t have to hang out or hide out. If you have large breast, stay away from tops with high or round collars. High collars shorten the length of your neck and put negative attention on your breast. Instead where V-neck collars. They will lengthen your neck and highlight your assets.

SIMPLE SHIFTS WINNING AT LOSING! THAT’LL HAVE YOU

BY BRANDY EDWARDS

A

nyone who knows me, or anything about my weight loss journey, knows that it’s been just that – a journey! One of the biggest mistakes I see people make while trying to lose weight is buying into the false belief that weight loss can be an overnight process and that a fad diet can be the end all, be all answer to their problem. While I’d have to say that most (if not all) fad diets probably do work, it only works temporarily, hence the expression: quick fix. There is SO much more to losing and maintaining weight loss. Take it from someone who knows first-hand; maintaining my almost 200-pound weight loss turned out to be 100% harder than actually losing it. So, no matter where you are on your journey, whether you are just starting out toward your goal or looking to maintain it, I’m going to share with you some of my top, super simple secrets that not only helped me lose the majority of my weight, but what also helps me maintain it. Implementing these simple shifts and tweaks into your diet (no, let me rephrase that…into your lifestyle) can and will drastically improve your body and your life from the inside out. So upgrade your health style with these simple lifestyle changes.

I CAUTION YOU! These tips might seem overly simplistic and small but the results you’ll get from putting them into practice CAN and WILL lead to lasting and BIG results!

CURVY | APRIL 2017

1. AVOID DIETING

6. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER

Everyone has a diet, a specific manner of eating, but just because you have a diet, doesn’t mean you have to be ‘on a diet’. Being on a diet suggests that it’s only temporary, so no matter what diet you might follow, at some point, you’re going to revert back to your normal eating habits once the diet is over, good or bad. So, instead of going on a diet, educate yourself so that you can accurately tweak your current eating habits until you have something that gives you the results you desire and is easy and healthy enough to follow it forever.

Juices and sodas are often packed with sugar and/or chemically engineered artificial sweeteners. Diet drinks are NO better from a health standpoint (but that’s a whole other subject). Give your body the water it needs. Ideally, you want to drink half your weight in ounces, daily. It will reward you with better health, clearer skin and more energy, just to name a few! Plus as an added bonus: drinking plenty of water helps keep you from consuming excess calories, too!

2. CHANGE SLOWLY You might want to change everything at once, but that strategy usually NEVER works well. Instead, make a list of 3 to 4 healthy style changes you wish to make and then take the baby steps necessary to gradually replace the old, negative patterns with your new, positive ones. Ultimately, you’re doing more than just changing your diet; you’re changing your lifestyle.

3. EAT EVERY DAY AT THE SAME TIME Your body likes routines and rhythms. The problem with waiting until you’re hungry to eat is that you’re WAY more likely to overeat or reach for junk in the name of hunger. Instead, create a food schedule and STICK TO IT. I eat every 2-3 hours (3 meals and 2 healthy snacks). When your body trusts that you’re going to feed it regularly – and with good stuff – it will happily release that unwanted fat.

4. HEALTHY PACKED LUNCH Plan and package your meals in advance since most of the things that are available in fast restaurants are not very healthy (although I have to admit that restaurants have come a LONG way in the last few years). Packing your lunch or already having dinner prepped/prepared at home makes you WAY less tempted to even consider running through a drive through. Plus, as an added bonus: you’ll save money.

7. GET YOUR FIBER Unless you eat beans regularly, it’s highly unlikely that you’re getting all the fiber you need. Track your diet and see how much you’re actually consuming. Consider a fiber supplement if you don’t seem to be able to eat all that you should. If you don’t like beans, then apples and carrots can serve as a good, and tasty, source of fiber.

8. EAT NUTS Nuts are an excellent source of healthy fats and protein. However, watch out for the salt and don’t eat too many, since the calories add up quickly. For example, 2 cups of almonds can have more calories than a whopper. Most recommendations call for 1 ounce of nuts per day, which is about 15-20 nuts.

9. BAKE, DON’T FRY Besides being fattening, oils that have been heated to very high temperatures can be VERY unhealthy. However, with the right herbs and spices, you can learn to love baked foods and savor the flavor, without all the unnecessary calories!

10. WORK OUT Exercise a little. I know many of you are saying. “Ugh!!!” But even a small amount of exercise can have positive benefits and help curb your appetite. Move around enough to increase your heart rate for at least a few minutes each day. I suggest, at least, 30 minutes of consistent movement.

5. GET THE JUNK FOOD OUT OF THE HOUSE If it’s in the house, you’re going to eat it sooner or later. The solution is to simply get rid of it all. Yes, I know many of you have issues with wasting food, so if that’s you, just do like I do and buy it. Take ONE serving out and walk it straight outside and give it away to the neighborhood kids. And as an added bonus: it makes you look like an awesome neighbor!

TRUST ME: Just these few healthy lifestyle changes can go a long way toward improving your body and your life. Start by implementing a few at a time, over time, and see how quickly you begin to look AND feel better!

MAKE EYE CONTACT. Looking someone in the eye conveys confidence and creates intimacy. INITIATE. Start the ball rolling, so to speak. Taking some control shows that you are self-assured. WEAR CLOTHES OR LINGERIE. Wear things that compliment your assets and that you feel your best in. EXPERIMENT. Don’t be afraid to try new things and shake things up a bit. BE VERBAL. 5 REASONS WHY HE

WON’T MARRY YOU BY JASMINE DIAZ

IT’S TOO SOON It’s true that women typically decide who they want to marry long before men do. But despite your readiness, it’s likely that your guy just simply isn’t there yet. While it may be exciting to think about what your relationship could be, asking for more of a commitment than you are truly ready for is a recipe for disaster.

HE’S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU Remember that late 2000’s romantic-comedy, He’s Just Not That into You? It’s about nine people in various stages of their love life; each with their own sad love story. Gigi, one of the characters in the movie, regularly misreads the men in her life. She often misinterprets kindness for signs of interest, while completely ignoring the clear writing on the wall: They’re just not that into you (and never were!). Are you like Gigi missing clear messages along the way? There is a very real likelihood that your guy is just not that into you, at least not like a husband and maybe more like a boyfriend. He may enjoy your company, the sex or even your good food, but that doesn’t mean he wants to lock you down for life. If your partner falls into this category, it’s very likely that you’ve ignored the glaring caution lights. Do you make future plans? Has he introduced you to his family? Are you a significant part of his life? If you answered no to any of these questions, there’s a chance you may not get that ring.

MARRIAGE ISN’T HIS THING Ever wonder why Oprah never married Stedman Graham? He’s asked several times, but she has yet to say yes. I’m certain that Oprah loves her guy of over 30 years, but like Oprah, your guy may not see marriage as a goal. He may find companionship more desirable than the ring.

38

CURVY | APRIL 2017

Marriage is certainly not for everyone, so what you should be asking yourself is this, “Do I need the ring to be happy in my relationship?” Because if Oprah has shown us anything, it’s that happiness can be as easy to come by as one of her favorite things.

YOU’RE TOO DEMANDING Ever watch a movie where the female lead makes this grand statement, “It’s either [fill in the blanks] or me. You have to choose!” Ultimatums are great for entertainment, but they’re not ideal for real-life situations. Why? Because no one wants to be told what they can and cannot do in their life. And wouldn’t it be better if they came to that conclusion without being bullied? Ponder that… The best part about relationships is the belief that you will always be together, because why get married if you think you’re going to get divorced? But when your partner is already difficult to work with, it’s hard to be optimistic about your future together. Being with someone who will boss you around during courtship will only make for a terrible marriage relationship. Perhaps it’s time for a new reality check.

HE’S GOT SOME SERIOUS FOMO (FEAR OF MISSING OUT) The prospect of being tied to one person for the rest of your life is a very challenging concept for some to overcome. And in the spirit of not wanting to miss out on the “next best thing,” marriage may be a big ask. Being with you might be “fun for the moment,” but he may have zero intentions on making this a long-term committed thing. Whether you agree with his decision or not is truly up to you, but if you’re not game for the ride, perhaps it’s time to get off.

Your guy may not see marriage as a goal. He may find companionship more desireable than the ring.

MAKING YOUR

MARRIAGE W.O.R.K. BY DR. SABRINA JACKSON

A

s you prepare for the ceremony, and

the excitement and enjoyment of your wedding day, keep in mind the real work begins after you say, “I DO. When you speak those sacred vows, you are committing to Love, Cherish, and Respect your spouse...for the rest of your days. Just like anything else in your life worth having, for example, a job, business, or a home, you must be willing to put in the work. Yes, work. Marriage is challenging with the right person because it takes work. Therefore, keep in mind that you will need to put in the work to have a successful marriage. Now, I do not want to scare you away. Work can be fun! You can do a job that is your passion and it never really feels like work. You keep that passion for your marriage and, even though you are working, it can be fun!

The following are key points you must remember and practice during the many years of your marriage: 40

CURVY | APRIL 2017

W WILLINGNESS

It is so vitally important that you are willing to do the necessary things to make the relationship work. Now, there are several things you must be willing to do...Communicate open and honestly, keep others out of your business, not bring old baggage into the current relationship, listen with an open heart, and treat your spouse with love and respect. You can’t get unwilling to work at the relationship. Ask yourself, “What am I willing to do to make this marriage work?”

O

OPPORTUNITY You will have millions of opportunities within your marriage and all of them will not be good for the relationship. There are opportunities that may be good for you, personally, but will destroy the marriage. Discuss all opportunities with your mate as you are no longer just an individual. You have the power of “oneness”. The two are molded into one. Your perception is your reality. See your mate as the other part of you. Ask yourself, “Am I looking for opportunities that will benefit the both of us and not just me?”

R

As you navigate, your marriage is willing to seek out opportunities to be responsible for the knowledge you gain about that wonderful spouse you love.

RESPONSIBILITY You are now responsible for another. Yes, I said responsible. Not like a parent to a child, but responsible nonetheless. You must be concerned about your mate physically, socially, emotionally, financially, mentally, and spiritually. If you see your mate suffering in any area, it is your responsibility to provide feedback, discuss it, listen, and to work with them. Ask yourself, “Am I ready to be responsible for another adult human being?”

K

KNOWLEDGE There are so many things about this person that you don’t know yet. Knowledge is power and you must seek out the knowledge necessary to make YOUR marriage work. This may be totally different than your parents’ or friends’. The type of person you are and the type of person your mate is, is the knowledge you must know. There is a model called Essential Lovestyles that uses colors to describe the four basic types of people.

BLUE GOLD GREEN ORANGE

Compassionate Person Consistent Person Competent Person Courageous Person

All people have all four types, but they are at different levels. Ask yourself, “Do I really know how I am wired? Why I do the things that I do?” CURVY | APRIL 2017

I fear I am being selfish and that maybe this is normal?

Love of

BY VONDA HOWARD

THIS ISSUE: WHEN SEX LEAVES YOUR MARRIAGE Dear Curves of Love, My husband and I have been married for a little of a year now. As much I love him, I feel our sex-life has come to a complete halt. We never have sex. We communicate great and have healthy conversations about our days, work, and friends. We cuddle, kiss, and hold hands. We even have date nights, I work nights and he works days. The emotions are there, but the physical interaction isn’t. I really wish we would have sex more often, instead of once every 3 or 4 months...I can’t remember the last time we really had an intimate moment. He used to be wild and fun... now I feel like we’re two old fuddy-duddies, and I’m at a complete loss. I’m 26 and he’s 29, so age isn’t an issue...or I hope not. He used to have a lot of partners in the past, while he was my second partner....ever. It seems not long after he said he ‘‘loved‘‘ me, even before he proposed, our sex life has diminished. I’m not sure if he associates sex differently than I do or what. I know he isn’t cheating on me because he seems to be at loss of why too, and I trust

him...and it would be pretty obvious, he’s not a very good house keeper...seriously. He just is never in the mood. We make ‘‘playful‘‘ gestures but nothing goes beyond that, just cuddling, then sleep. I fear I am being selfish and that maybe this is normal for some married couples? You know being part of those Americans that have sexless marriages. I seriously could use some advice outside my circle of friends whom seem to think I should have an affair or lay down the law. I want to make sense and reason with what is happening and how we can fix it before it damages our marriage completely. –-- Yearns for a Healthy Sex Life

HAVE RELATIONSHIP PROBLEMS? Email editors@curvymag.com with the subject: Curves of Love

Dear Yearns for a Healthy Sex Life,

I

’m sorry to hear that so early in your marriage, you’re having this issue. It definitely is a problem, but can indeed be worked out.

The first thing I would tell you to do is try not to get frustrated with one another and argue about it. That can just make things more difficult (I know it’s easier said than done). There are a few questions that can be asked that weren’t answered in your letter, like; is he currently taking any medications? Is there any stress at work? Both these things can have a huge effect on sexual desire. No, you’re not being selfish at all. Everyone wants love and intimacy in their relationships. Even though there are a high number of sexless marriages, there is no reason why yours has to be among that number, especially this early in the game. I also noticed in the letter you said that you said that you both work opposite hours. This can be a problem in any relationship. I know you have probably heard all the suggestions, like; plan date nights and buy sexy clothes, etc. Honestly, this sounds like you guys need something a little deeper. There is obviously some level of miscommunication here. I am seriously suggesting that you both seek out counseling. Professional counseling. Which, (I’m about to honest with you here), should have been done BEFORE you got married. You said that all this started before you guys even said, “I Do”. If this was an issue before the nuptials, there is no way you guys should have proceeded with things the way they were. You also said he said he “loved” you. This further indicates a need for a professional. Why don’t you believe he loves you? Outside of him saying he doesn’t or him plainly acting like he hates you, (and from this letter it doesn’t sound like any of that is going on), don’t question or test his love for you. That is a sure way to make things worse. Now lastly, lets talk about these friends of yours. I’m just going to be blunt with you. No real friend is going to encourage you to cheat on your husband. Point blank. A real friend will listen to you and try to help you figure a way to possibly save your family rather than cause even more problems. Not trying to down your gal-pals, but you may need to check them on that. Good luck to you! CURVY | APRIL 2017

BREAKING DOWN HOMOPHOBIC BARRIERS BY DR. SABRINA JACKSON

Just because you are not a part of the LGBT community and do not agree with the lifestyle, it is possible to remain respectful.

W

ith the landmark Supreme Court decision declaring samesex marriage legal, so many heterosexuals feel like they do not know how to handle these couples. This is especially true for those who do not agree with the ruling and feel “some kind of way” when they are around same-sex couples, viewing samesex themes on TV, or listening to those discussions. The following are specific things heterosexuals can do:

1. AGREE TO DISAGREE….AGREEABLY Just because you are not apart of the LGBT community and do not agree with the lifestyle, it is STILL possible to remain respectful and calm when communicating the disagreement.

2. DON’T BE MEAN, JUDGMENTAL, OR OFFENSIVE This topic can become very emotional and anger may take over. Make sure you control you anger commit to not tell inappropriate jokes, bully, or belittle.

3. UNDERSTAND TOLERANCE IS NOT THE SAME AS APPROVAL You can be tolerant of behaviors/differences without approving those behaviors. Tolerance allows difference to co-exist and since we really must continue to work,

44

CURVY | APRIL 2017

attend school, and participant in life on the plant with these difference we must strengthen our tolerance muscle.

4. DON’T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS It is simple, when we make an assumption we do it with limited information, therefore don’t assume things like all gay men like children. Those assumptions lead to destructive behaviors.

5. BE OPEN TO LEARNING The world is an ever changing place and learning is paramount to co-existing. Instead of making an assumption, have open/honest conversations where you ask appropriate questions….not to be funny or hurtful, but to gain knowledge.

6. WATCH YOUR FACIAL EXPRESSIONS AND BODY LANGUAGE It is so amazing how our face and body speaks volumes. Make sure you are not staring, gimmicking, or refuse to shake hands as an appropriate social gesture. Understand that you must deal with your uncomfortable feeling not project them on the person representing the difference you are uncomfortable with.

7. STAY IN YOUR LANE Understand that the only person you can control is YOU, if you spend time minding your own business it will leave you no time to mind others.

8. KNOW THAT BEING IN A SAME-SEX RELATIONSHIP IS NOT CONTAGIOUS You cannot catch being LGBT!! Children raised by a samesex couple will NOT automatically become interested or attracted to the same sex.

9. DON’T STUFF YOUR VALUES DOWN OTHERS THROAT We do live in the Land of the Free and this law was not passed to offend the heterosexuals, but to provide liberty in who people love. You may not have that value but do not attempt to bully, scare, or manipulate friends/family members/co-workers to be how YOU want them to be.

10. SHOW KINDNESS It is so amazing how cruel people can be. Seek to treat others with love, grace, and respect. All people are seeking Love & Understanding. When you show tolerance, kindness, and respect you draw those very thing right back to your world!!

DEAR

KeKe

BY KEKE SIMOT

THIS ISSUE: THE WAR BEGINS IN THE MIND Dear KeKe,

Y

ou don’t know me but, hello, my name is LuChonna. I believe the Lord just led me to your page at just the right time. I know you probably heard similar things that I am about to say but I’ll try to keep it short. First of all, I just want to say that from what I have read so far, you and your girls are my heros. People don’t understand how hard it is to be a big girl in this world. The pressures you go through and the hurt and pain. I feel like I am all alone, but reading your page has made me feel like someone else at least understands what I go through and has overcome. Right now, the enemy is really fighting me hard and your strength and confidence is really encouraging to me. I have never really had too many relationships with men in my life that love and respect me and it has caused me to have very low self-esteem. It has gotten so bad that sometimes I am afraid to look in a mirror because I feel like I am so ugly because no one wants to love me and treat me right. I seem to attract guys that think that I am just a sexual object, like I am not worth loving and having a real relationship with. I have even ran into guys who say they care about me and want a deep relationship with me and when I say that I want to save sex for marriage, they run. I am dealing with that right now and it sucks. I don’t understand why men think they can play with our heads, lie to us and string us along just to get the booty and when we don’t give it up, they just drop and dog us and are not even man enough to be straight up and tell us why. And that is only some of the drama I have delt with. But seeing a beautiful, strong, successfull and determined female like yourself is so encouraging to me. I know God

48

CURVY | APRIL 2017

has put me here with a purpose but sometimes life just gets me so down that I just want to give up and end it all. I try to stay strong and move forward but it is hard. I don’t know how you do it but you do it well from what I can see. I am trying to bust my butt and finish school right now so I can be independent and successful so I can bless other people and it feels so good to see a sister like yourself who is getting all that God has for her out of life like I want to for my self. Being a black successful woman in this world is hard because we have two strikes against us right, being black and being women. We have to work twice as hard to and white don’t seem to realize and acknowledge that. Instead, they want to say we got where we are through affirmative action and then they stereotype us and think the only thing we are capable of doing is having babies and living on welfare. The field I am pursuing (Computer Science) is not the traditional black women’s field and a lot of people have made sure I know that but I am determined to do my thing anyway. Thanks also for being an awesome example for women like me. You have really made my day and I know God has used you to lift my head. God bless you and all your girls because God knows that big woman are not exactly glorified in our society and that makes life hard. It feels good to know that I have a place I can go to now and see great women that look like me surviving and living happy. Women like you make it look so easy that I can’t help but be inspired and have so much hope. I love ya’ll so much and I don’t even know you. God bless you, Your New Friend, LuChonna

WANT TO TALK TO KEKE? Email editors@curvymag.com with the subject: Dear KeKe

you seek to hear. You can start with ‘‘I deserve better,’’ ‘‘I am beautiful,’’ or, as plus size rapper Mz. 007 says, ‘‘Bitch, I’m gorgeous.’’ Whatever works for you! But, start repeating these affirmations to yourself everyday, all throughout the day. It takes 30 days to form a habit so make a commiment for 30 days to go over your affirmations every single day. The easiest way to get started is by adding your affirmations to your daily prayer. If you are a Chrisitian, then God says you are made in his image. Therefore, you are already a Goddess, so don’t feel too crazy to pray to yourself! It is your right!

BE YOUR OWN HYPE MAN

Dear LuChonna,

Y

ou are such a inspiration to me! Thank you for being brave enough to reach out to me and share a part of your soul with me. I say a part because you are not the sum of the digits on your scale, nor the problems associated with it. Also, thank you for the aknowledgement and compliments on my staff. I am surrounded by phenomenally talented and amazing women who make me better. It takes a entire village to raise a KeKe. You touched on some many different plights, but they all have the same solution–winning the battle inside your mind. Better self-esteem starts within. I may seem very confident, but I still have my own little insecurites. I just don’t let them consume my thoughts. I wake up every day telling myself I’m beautiful, I’m amazing, and I deserve nothing less than the best. No, seriously I TALK to myself all the time. I tell myself all the things I need to hear and then I surround myself with reinforcements. SELF-esteem is about nobody else but YOURself. If you feel like you have low self-esteem, it’s because you are allowing yourself to feel low. Take your own power back and stop allowing people to dictate how you feel about yourself. Here are few ways you can win the battle within your own mind.

AFFIRMATIONS Talk to yourself how you wish others spoke to you. How you treat yourself ultimately is the blueprint that others will eventually follow. It does not matter if you are in the shower, in the office, at church, at school, in the grocery store, or most importantly, looking at yourself in the mirror, say everything you need to hear. I cannot tell you the words to say because only you know deep down what validation

Since positive self-esteem is a journey of ones’ self, you may need to put up your own signs along the road as reminders to your affirmations. Simple shifts in what you see, hear, and feel could make a world of a difference to your self-esteem. Let’s start with visuals. Before I moved, I had my affirmations all over my house. Vision boards, motivational wall art, special prayers, and lists of what I wanted for myself taped to the refrigerator. I also bought t-shirts with motivational sayings. My Internet life reflected the same because I started following motivational speakers, watched motivational videos on YouTube, and saved every meme that inspired me. I changed what I heard by putting negative people out of my life. When it came to family, the ones that didn’t believe in me, I just spoke to them less. Men who were not treating me like the Queen that I am got dumped at the first sign. People who do not make you feel good when you are around them do not serve a purpose in your life.

CONFIDENCE IS POWER Here’s a secret. Whether you’re a size 2 or 22, men love women with confidence. A well put-together woman with confidence will grab a man’s attention and if you are a big girl with ‘‘swag’’ you get extra points because most aren’t expecting your pimp game to be that strong. You attract what you give out. If you project confidence and that you are a no-nonsense girl, you will attract a man who will respect it and find it sexy. The opposite will happen if you are projecting low self-esteem. Men can only treat you how you allow. Be confident, trust your instincts, and don’t doubt yourself when it comes to men. Most women know almost from day one what the man is about. Always an ear to listen! | Editor in Chief

ELIMINATING THE 7 F S THAT BLOCK OUT SELF LOVE BY DR. SABRINA JACKSON

any women talk with me about desiring to truly love themselves, yet remain stuck in the barriers that keep them from experiencing the self-love they seek. Identifying the ones you struggle with and then making the decision to move beyond each blocker can overcome them. The 7 “F’s” are:

CURVY | APRIL 2017

FEARS

FLAWS

Things that frighten us can cripple us from going after the dreams and goals deep within us. There are only 2 emotions Fear and Love. All positive emotions lead back to love and all negative emotions lead back to Fear. LOVE cast out all Fear as they CAN NOT occupy the same space. Fear does not have to stop you from pursuing your Dreams, as the only way to build your courage muscle is to do something you are scared of. Think about something you would try if you were not afraid to‌that is the very thing you must do. In an effort to walk is self-love, push past your fears and honor the gifts, talents, and dreams waiting to make a difference in the world.

Our society has women so concerned about looking a certain way. We will not try to accomplish new things because we are not skinny enough, not tall enough, not light enough, or our skin is not smooth enough. We focus on the physical, while it is what is within that hold our true gifting and potential. What are you allowing your look, size, or weight to keep your rom pursing? Activate the core of self-love by delivering all that you are as the fact we all have gifts and must give them to the world.

FAULTS We as women are so critical of the things we see as our weaknesses. We allow our perception of limitations to cause us to think less of ourselves rather than embracing the greatness inside of you. Yes, we all have areas in us that we are not good at, however we can learn to discipline ourselves to move beyond our limitations. To walk in selflove, we must accept our faults and understand that those very limitations can make us connect with others in the realness that makes us human.

FAILURES So you have failed in the past and felt the sting of disappointment. You can choose to use those experiences as a steppingstone, However, so often the feeling of not wanting to fall again paralyzes us. Take a new look at your failures and accept them as learning opportunities. Love never fails, so apply love to the disappointment and use it to propel you to your Destiny of Total Self-Love.

FRUSTRATIONS I am totally amazed at just how mean and frustrated women are everywhere, they are emulating the women of reality shows and simply allowing frustrations to operate like animals. It is a true sign of self-love when you can control your temper and not allow others to move you off your square. As polished women, we know conflict will happen with people however, we must use intellect to handle conflict not aggression. We must watch how we demonstrate frustrations. Who wants to assist, work with, or be bound to someone who is so irritable! NO ONE!!! Develop a Joy that no one or nothing can shake within you, that is place of self-love.

FEELINGS As women so many of operate in fragile feelings and we allow what others say or think keep us from loving ourselves. Have you ever had a bright idea, never moved on it, then discovered that someone else is doing it! So, what your feelings have been hurt, get over, it, forgive and walk in your purpose. Often the person you must forgive is YOURSELF! Stop beating up on yourself and forgive yourself for all your mistakes and shortcomings. Ladies listen to your inner voice, value your opinion and stand in your power, as Self Love is love of yourself!!

FLESH The last barrier to self-love is very destructive‌our flesh. Too often we become so consumed with satisfying our 5 senses: taste, sight, smell, hearing, and touch. Are you smoking, drinking excessively, eating sweets while a diabetic, or having unprotected sex because your partner wants it!! The flesh can fuel risky behaviors that are detrimental to honoring self-love.

Take some time and examine the list for your own issues and make the commitment to change your thinking, which will change your speaking, and watch your world of self love blossom. CURVY | APRIL 2017

s the nation rebounds from our last recession, many of us are a little bit more cash conscious these days. Here are a few instant ways to help you trim back your household spending in 30 days without sacrificing the things that you really need and want.

PACK LUNCHES

If you have children, one way to scale back spending right away is to stop giving them lunch money, and start packing lunches yourself on a daily basis. Yes, it’s a little more work, but your wallet will thank you for it. Poll your children about their favorite things to eat or try to match the school’s lunch menu. Then, go shopping at your local warehouse club and purchase a supply of paper lunch bags in the color of your choice, cold cuts, drinks and snacks– better yet, skip the pre-packaged drinks and invest in a fashionable, steel thermos and fill with a water-based drink. If you don’t have kids, skip ordering lunch at work and paper-bag your mid-afternoon meal in advance, before setting out the door in the morning. The supply of paper bags, cold cuts, snacks and drinks will last a few weeks– and even months.

GO FOOD SHOPPING

Check your local supermarkets flyers online or in your newspaper before creating a shopping list. Most food store sales start on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, so, buy and stock up only on items that are on sale that week. Then, buy store brand essentials¬–eggs, milk, bread, etc. (Most store brand or generic items are made by brand name companies).

CURVY | APRIL 2017

Instead of shelling out money for expensive, premade juices in large containers, opt for purchasing your favorite drinks in powdered or frozen concentrated form that you can mix with water at home. The advantages of these concentrated drinks, aside from cost, is that they take up less space in your refrigerator, you can store several in your freezer, and you can use them as you need them. They’re frozen, so the expiration date is way out on the calendar.

STOP EATING OUT If you really must eat out instead of replicating your favorite restaurant meal at home, try to scale back by eating out to half the time you normally chow down at eateries each month. One of the biggest moneymakers for restaurants are drinks. Sure, entrées cost money too, but patrons usually order more than one beverage, per person, when sitting down for a meal. This artificially inflates the final tab. A healthy and free alternative to keep your restaurant bill to a minimum is to simply order water¬–refills are always on the house!

WATCH YOUR HOUSEHOLD ELECTRICITY USAGE Most apartments and homes have more rooms than inhabitants. Why should your home be completely lit in the evening? Save on your electricity bill by turning on the lights only in the rooms that you are actually using during the nighttime. If your home has several recessed lights in each room, opt for using a lamp from time-totime. Also, run your appliances after dinnertime and in the early morning. Most utility companies offer power usage discounts at these times.

YOU ARE EXACTLY

WHERE YOU’RE SUPPOSED TO BE BY KAY JAMES

W

e are uncomfortable and, truth be told, irritated. Our labor pains keep us awake at nights and slightly stretched beyond a comfortable position during the days. The due date is upon us, but not yet. We toss, turn, cry, and find this place overwhelming but we know it’s necessary to carry us through full-term. But must it be this long? Must we feel this out of control of our own dreams? For the lessons being taught, we are asked to be present and ready and open to learning. The ‘newness’ that enters

We give each day the nod to begin when we open our eyes and rise from our beds...Life demands that we keep moving forward and trusting a Source beyone our understanding and stay in steady motion when we don’t know our next step. 54

with the dawn of each day hopes to be noticed. When the unfamiliar knocks, we no longer hide from what we don’t know but admire it with childlike curiosity, passionate about the magic about to unfold. Tell yourself about your dreams; speak them out loud and watch how reading about them in your own handwriting and hearing of them in your voice awakens you to believe they will indeed be born. Like an unborn child, it kicks gently to say, ‘‘I’m here;’’ your dreams catch you even when you feel like you’re failing forward in nets of recovery. Your moment won’t define you as incompetent or a dreamer whose dreams have yet to come to pass. They will define you as the dream chaser who traveled the road not traveled to yield what eye had never seen. This love affair we have with life is the similar road our hearts travel with a new crush. Beaming with excitement from the adrenaline rush of hearing their voice or reading a warm note. Savouring the times guarded as more precious and finding our right footing to understand their language. The storms, like the breeze, like the sunniest days, call on us to move in harmony with its respective beat. Don’t fight it; move with it. Our romance with our lives writes a deep, rich love story. One that may not be flawless, but perfectly ours. Some moments we’re tempted to want to re-write but this script is void of regrets and full of moments that call us to dig deep and love ourselves through forgiveness and growth. We laugh and sing and skip through the seasons, even when what’s visible may be our tears, shattered dreams or brokenness. Yet, we are where we’re supposed to be. Can’t you feel it?

Tell yourself about your dreams; speak them out loud and watch how reading about them in your own handwriting and hearing of them in your voice awakens you to believe they will indeed be born. We give each day the nod to begin when we open our eyes and rise from our beds. At times, we need a little help to begin with it. To believe again, to trust again, to keep going when our faith has us in tears from thinking, ‘‘Am I making a fool out of myself to believe that this day may hold the moments I’ve longed for and worked for?’’ We’re away from the shore, being pulled with the current of curiosity too strong for us to turn and journey back to what was and too far out to see a sign of what’s to come. Life demands that we keep moving forward and trusting a Source beyond our understanding and stay in steady motion when we don’t know our next step. We move; Our quest to burst fully free and be transparent with the potency of the chase of life oozing from our pores is what we feel and our passions seeking to come out from the corner where the fear of failure has tucked them. Dance with me, life says. Allow your ears to hear the beat undisturbed and your gaze to be so focused on just us that nothing else matters. I’ve got you. Trust me. Believe in the goodness I have for you and watch it come forward. Kissed by the rays of the sun and tucked into sleep by the moon and stars. The night whispers you’re almost full term and your heart smiles. Your dreams are about to come to life. The pains are soon to be a thing of the distant past, just a moment longer.

Grab a glass of your favorite wine, take a seat & step inside our beautiful Moroccan-themed Garden Party luncheon! BY KEKE SIMOT & MELANIE BRYANT

U

sher in spring by hosting a Moroccan themed Garden Party luncheon and ‘WOW’ your guests with deliciously simple, but flavorful, ethnic food amid the sun-washed colors of table linens, lush layers of vibrantly hued flowers, and a few perfectly chosen accessories. For 12 centuries, Morocco has been a crossroads for warriors and travelers alike. It’s been invaded and occupied by many countries, but perhaps none has left a more indelible mark than France. After the Treaty of Fez was signed in 1912, the French established themselves in Morocco for 44 years, and when Morocco became an independent nation in 1956, not only were the French influences strongly rooted in the culture, but the Moroccan influences were strongly rooted in the French people. Thus, whether in Tangier or Paris, one will undoubtedly find remnants of both cultures. The idea of Morocco as an idyllic and exotic locale where both adventure and romance flourish was first established during the 1930s when a number of disillusioned American literary figures took up residence in Tangiers. By the 1960s, its reputation had grown to such proportions that just about everyone of celebrity status had visited, and for some, like the Rolling Stones, it was a regular place of escape. The food is simple, but exotically spiced with nuances of cumin and fennel, saffron, and cinnamon and the saturated hues of vibrant fruits and vegetables are garnished with perfumed flowers, toasted nuts, and rich syrups. For a visually stunning party, choose a variety of fresh cut flowers and potted plants of varying heights and with contrasting textures. Hunt through your local thrift shop in search of colored glass vases, colorful pottery and platters, and even a few lanterns. Set a table with an array of colored linens, napkins—even scarves—or pull an old area rug out into the yard and raid all the cushions from the living room sofa and chairs. Use a little imagination by borrowing beaded necklaces or rhinestone rings from your jewelry box to use as champagne glass charms or napkin rings. Above all, have fun—don a bohemian outfit, show off a fun pair of chandelier earrings, and wear your hair loose!

EDIBLE FLOWERS Did you know that many flowers are edible and perfectly safe to eat as long as they are free of herbicides and pesticides? Enjoying the subtle taste of flowers is nothing new, in fact, in many cultures, eating beautiful blossoms is a tradition. While many blooms can’t be eaten and some are even poisonous, there are many popular ones that are both edible and delicious. Here are a few to consider:

– Gardenia – Rose – Pansies – Nasturtiums – Snapdragon – Carnations – Lilac – Fuchsia

– Rosemary – Lavender – Basil – Thyme – Mint – Chamomile – Chives

APPETIZER IDEAS Place colorful bowls filled with pistachios, dates and olives out for guests to nibble on. Likewise, while not traditional, a basket of pita chips and a bowl of hummus would also work well with the meal. Buy prepared hummus and after placing in an attractive bowl, drizzle with olive oil and top with chopped cilantro and a pinch of paprika and cumin.

Assorted table lines, particularly in deeply saturated hues of purple, fuchsia, blue, and orange and an variety of patterns, including paisleys, stripes, and brocades.

– Lanterns – Rugs or blankets – Pillows – Ottomans – Tureens – Large colorful platters – Accent pieces of gold, bronze, or silver – Colorful flowers – Scarves – Interesting or unique pottery of glassware

MOROCCAN SPICED CARROT SOUP – 2 ½ pounds of fresh carrots, peeled and cut into two inch pieces – 3 tablespoons of olive oil – ½ a small yellow onion, finely chopped – 4 tablespoons ground fennel – 1 tablespoon ground cumin – 2 teaspoons ground coriander – 2 pinches cayenne pepper – 3 cloves of garlic, finely minced – ¼ cup finely chopped fresh cilantro, plus more for the garnish – 3 tablespoons of butter – Chicken stock – Salt and pepper to taste – Feta croutons

1. Heat olive oil in a heavy stock pot and add onions and garlic; cook until just softened and fragrant. 2. Add the carrots and the spices and cook for 5 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent burning. 3. Add the butter and cook until the butter melts; add the fresh cilantro. 4. Pour in enough chicken stock to just cover the carrots; bring to a boil and boil for 3 minutes, then reduce the heat and put the lid on the pot, leaving it cracked for the steam to escape. 5. Cook until the carrots are soft; then turn off heat and allow it to cool until just warm. 6. Using an immersion blender, or a food processor, process the mixture until velvety smooth; thin with additional broth until you achieve the right consistency —not too thin, though—then season with salt and pepper to taste. 7. Reheat until hot and then ladle into bowls and top with a feta crouton and a drizzle of chive oil.

FETA CROUTONS 1. Place the baguette slices in a single layer on a sheet pan and toast in a 350 degree oven until lightly golden; remove and allow them to cool. 2. To assemble the croutons, gently mound a teaspoon or two of feta onto the baguette slices and shape and press until the cheese holds together.

– Cilantro oil

CHIVE OIL

– Edible flowers for decorating

1. In a blender, process a handful of cilantro leaves (no stems) and a few tablespoons of olive oil until smooth.

BEET, ORANGE, ARUGULA SALAD WITH QUINOA – 8 medium beets, cut into 8 wedges each – 2 oranges, segmented, pith and membrane removed – 3 cups of arugula – 1 cup of cooked quinoa – 3-4 tablespoons of crumbled feta cheese – 2-3 tablespoons crushed, toasted sliced almonds – 2-3 tablespoons of fresh green onion tops, finely minced – Olive oil – Champagne vinegar – Salt and pepper to taste – Edible flowers for decorating

*This salad exchanges the traditional couscous for quinoa, which is high in protein and denser, for a more satisfying bite. **Look for precooked packaged beets in the produce section, or cook your own, by roasting them whole until easily pierced with a fork, then allow to cool and rub off the skins. 1. Mix together the arugula, green onion, and quinoa with enough olive oil and champagne vinegar to moisten; season with salt and pepper. 2. To assemble the salad, place a layer of the quinoa salad mixture onto a large platter, then arrange beets and oranges over it; continue to layer and build the salad. 3. Top with crumbled feta cheese and crumbled almonds. 4. Decorate with edible flowers; serve immediately.

MUSHROOM AND GOAT CHEESE TART WITH POACHED EGG AND GREENS – 1 package of prepared pie dough, at room temperature – 2 packages of white mushrooms – 2 cloves of garlic, finely minced – 1 tablespoon of olive oil – 2 tablespoons of butter – ¼ cup white vermouth – Salt and pepper – 2 eggs, lightly beaten – 1 5 ounce package of soft goat cheese at room temperature – ½ cup finely shredded hard goat cheese

Morocco was under French rule for 44 years. The blending of the two cultures is evident in many Moroccan dishes. This tart is a play of French bistro favorite, but is rich and decadent— perfect for a small entrée—and aside from the eggs, easily prepared ahead of time. 1. Gently roll out the pie dough and shape and fit into a 9 inch tart pan with a removable bottom. 2. Prick the dough all over with a fork and bake in a 350 degree oven until golden brown. 3. Meanwhile, in a large heavy pan, melt the butter and olive oil and when hot, add the garlic and mushrooms. Cook until the mushrooms are fully cooked and any water they have released had evaporated. 4. Add the white vermouth and cook until completely reduced and only 1 tablespoon of the liquid remains. Season with salt and pepper to taste and set aside to cool. 5. In a separate bowl, whip together the softened goat cheese and the eggs. 6. To assemble the tart, thinly spread the goat cheese mixture onto the cooled tart crust; top with the shredded cheese and mushrooms; return to the oven and bake until set; then cool completely before slicing. 7. To assemble the dish, place a slice of the tart on a dinner plate, top with a poached egg; garnish with slivered green onion tops, or chives, and edible flowers; serve with a handful of greens lightly tossed with olive oil and fresh squeezed lemon.

Ingrid Hoffmann CURVY | APRIL 2017

BY ANDREA AMADOR

My brand is called, ‘‘Delicioso’’ which means ‘‘Delicious’’ and it’s not just about food. It’s about living deliciously. It’s almost like a mantra. I say, ‘‘I’m going to have a delicious day no matter what happens.’’ And it’s also about surrounding yourself with deliciousness and doing what makes you feel good.

I

f you’re a curvy foodie with a passion for Spanish food, you probably know about Food Network chef and host, Ingrid Hoffmann. She is the beautiful, curvy Latina spitfire behind the show, “Simply Delicioso.” A woman of many diverse talents, she’s capturing the hearts of millions of viewers. We’re excited that we got to catch up with her and get to know more about the woman behind the chef. Here’s what she had to say:

ANDREA: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A CHEF? Ingrid: Oh Boy! A series of accidents in a row turned me into what I do today. It was always a hobby. I grew up in the business. My mom had a restaurant and a catering business since I was very little. She’s a cordon Bleu trained chef. I always say that I am a professional eater, first and foremost. And quite frankly I never set out to be a great cook. I enjoy CURVY | APRIL 2017

97

the process of sharing food, cooking for people and making them happy. That really was the beginning. Then I opened up a restaurant with my mom in Miami, and I was asked to do a cooking segment on TV and I had no clue what I was doing, but somehow they liked it. And from the one thing it kind of spun like a chain reaction. Then from there I did Good Housekeeping, and the events market. That’s when I realized, “if you want to pay me for my hobbies, which are a combination of food, fashion, lifestyle, décor, etc, then that’s what I’m gonna do.” Because actually I could have never dreamed of a better job. I never thought that I could have it that good and actually make a living from it. And that was really how things turned out.

I’ve always struggled with wright, I have, and I always used to yo-yo, up and down. TELL ME WHERE DID YOU GET YOUR SENSE OF STYLE AND CONFIDENCE? I don’t know about confidence. I’m a very visual person. I would have been an architect or a designer and probably would have always worked in doing something creative. I like putting things together, but I like it to be effortless. I’m better at how to fake it, make it simple and easy. Cooking food should not take long.

RECENTLY I READ ON YOUR BLOG THAT YOU SAID, “FOOD IS YOUR OBSESSION, AND YOU MENTIONED THAT YOU HAD BEEN ON MANY DIFFERENT DIETS. I’VE GOT TO KNOW. HOW, WHERE, WHY? YOU ARE STUNNING! I’ve always struggled with weight. I have, and I always used to yo-yo, up and down. I have skinny jeans and fat jeans. I’m the kind of person who in a week can put on 7 pounds, or lose 7 pounds in a week. And I sort of always struggled with binging and it was either all or nothing. And eventually as you grow, you try every single diet. And for me, the minute I say, “Diet” it means I’m going to break it. And it means I have something to obsess about. I am

98

CURVY | APRIL 2017

compulsive-obsessive. So at some point it was more like, “How can I find a way to stop setting these standards for myself that I can’t keep? Because eventually when I get off the wagon, then I go in the opposite direction. And so that’s why I kind of slowly devised a little system for myself, where I am good most of the time, and I allow myself two binge meals a week. They could be anything and any quantity I want. Then I just get back and say, “Okay, I had my three milkshakes and two burgers and my ribs and tonight it’s back to lean protein and my nice, delicious flavors. And that has really worked, because I never feel deprived. And obviously having smaller meals with a snack in between sort of keeps me feeling full and allows me to constantly think about food, only because I’m allowed to have it so often.

AS YOU’VE ALREADY SHARED, SO MANY WOMEN STRUGGLE WITH A NEGATIVE SELF IMAGE. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE TO INSPIRE WOMEN MORE TO LOVE THE SKIN THEY’RE IN? You know I hate to say this, but unfortunately I think that’s only something that comes with age. Let me tell you. I used to dread wearing a bikini in my 20’s. I would always find some little piece of fat to obsess about. And now at my age, I look back and I say, “What an idiot! What an idiot!” It’s like now that I’m finally comfortable in my skin, now my body starts regressing because that’s what age does eventually. You don’t have at 46, the body you had at 25. And nowadays with the magazines and young girls, I think young girls have always had that fear even when fat wasn’t such a big issue. So unfortunately I think it’s an age thing or hopefully it’s something that people will learn much earlier than I did. It’s really about finding balance and enjoying life. My brand is called, “Delicioso” which means “Delicious” and it’s not just about food. It’s about living deliciously. It’s almost like a mantra. I say, “I’m going to have a delicious day no matter what happens.” And it’s also about surrounding yourself with deliciosiousness and doing what makes you feel good. I remember looking back on pictures of myself and saying, “Oh my God! My butt is so big.” P.S. It wasn’t. It is now. It wasn’t then.

CURVY | APRIL 2017

YOU’VE DONE SO MANY THINGS IN SUCH A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME AND MANY WOMEN ARE AFRAID OF STEPPING OUT OF A COMFORT ZONE. YOU’VE DONE RACING, AND MODELING, BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR. HOW DO YOU WORK IT SO YOU CAN DO ALL OF THESE AMAZING THINGS. You know I don’t think that I consciously work it. I think that probably I get bored doing any one thing and I get antsy. I’m an adrenaline junkie and I’m an adventurer. I often say, “I probably wouldn’t be where I am if I were someone who had fears.” In a way, it’s been a great thing because if I knew then what I know now about how intricate and complicated things were, that’s one of those cases where ignorance is bliss, and it worked for me because if I had known, I wouldn’t have dared.

I work with very specific goals, as well. And you say, ‘‘Okay, I have it. Now what?’’ One of the challenges is to learn to be happy and enjoy the ride and the moment! On the other hand there are some other things in my life that because of having no fears, you can put yourself in danger. You just don’t think about it. I used to race cars and ride motorcycles and think nothing of it. Now it’s like if a friend says, “Come to a motorcycle run.” Now I think, “What if I get hurt? How can I do my tour? How can I do my recipe testing if I have my hand in a cast? –Stuff that I never thought about. I think that it’s never been about how do I do it all. It’s about the craziness of the carnival that lives inside that just doesn’t allow for any boredom to set in.

WAS THERE A SPECIFIC PERSONAL CHALLENGE THAT YOU FACED TO BECOME THE INGRID YOU ARE TODAY? Sure. Many. We all have dreams and fantasies. I guess there’s always that little secret voice inside. And sometimes I think that voice isn’t driven by me. It’s by all the other voices saying, “Are you crazy? You’re going to start doing this at this stage in your life? You want to get into TV at 30? Blah, blah, blah. It’s all those voices that doubt and tell you that you can’t take your money that you invested and waste it creating a brand. That’s just not something that you do.” Every day presents challenge, one way or another, but at the same time that is the driving force. I work with very specific goals, as well. And you say, “Okay, I have it. Now what?” One of the challenges is to learn to be happy and enjoy the ride and the moment!

YOU HAVE SUCH A SUNNY SPIRIT! WHAT’S THE FUEL THAT FIRES YOU? I think humor and really a lust for life. I’m lucky in the sense that I inherited that from my parents. My mother who at 75 years old, is someone who doesn’t stop and she’s always coming up with something. I grew up in a house where that was always sort of the norm, rather than the exception. And it’s loving life. I want to drink it up. I don’t know how long I’m going to be here. And I want to do it all. I say experiences in the end are the only thing you can take with you. You can’t take your belongings. But you’ll definitely take what you’ve eaten, where you’ve traveled, what and who you loved. And I guess it’s really the passion for all that.

WITH THREE WORDS, HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURSELF? Intense. Passionate. Fun. And sweet also. Not sure that people would get that unless they know me well. I guess the way people tend to see me without knowing, is she’s driven, passionate, hard working, but I think that there’s a very sensitive, kind, big hearted person there as well.

WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL BEAUTIFUL, INSIDE AND OUT? Loving, family, sleeping, the feeling that I’ve been good to myself, exercise, eating well, surrounding myself with nice things. I don’t mean belongings. I mean doing the little things that make you feel good like lighting candles, and meditating at the end of the day. Little things that help change your energy when you’re stressed. CURVY | APRIL 2017

WHAT’S THE PHILOSOPHY THAT KEEPS YOU UP WHEN YOU’RE STARTING TO FEEL DOWN? Faith that I can always go to and I’m not speaking about religious faith.

HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE THE WORD, “CURVY?” Not straight and boring.

WHAT MESSAGE WOULD YOU LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE READERS OF CURVY MAGAZINE? Curves are good. I think that there are so many other big things that are important and dramatic in life that it’s not worth it to sweat the little ones. Being happy and healthy is more important than being skinny or fat. But try telling that to a gorgeous 20 year old girl. You can say things to people but sometimes they’ll only get it 20 years later. But the only way of walking that path is by walking.

WHAT’S A PLEASURE OF YOURS; SOMETHING THAT YOU LOVE TO DO WHILE RELAXING? I’m pretty diverse. There’s a lot of things that I like. I love the beach and the ocean. The ocean is one of the things that makes me feel the best, being on the water, in the water, a beautiful sunset, exercising, being outdoors, hiking, fishing, eating, drinking, being with friends, traveling. I have an incredible wanderlust.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE COMFORT FOOD? I would have to say starches and coca cola.

WHAT’S IN YOUR FRIDGE BESIDES COCA COLA? Generally I’m very healthy. I normally do not drink juices. I’ll eat fruit for its fiber, but I won’t drink the juice. In my fridge, you’ll find always my delicioso adobo which is a spice that I make myself. There will be yogurt. There will be papaya, berries, olives, parmesan cheese. There will be a tapenade. That’s an olive paste. Almond milk, eggs. All stuff that you can make fast things. In my freezer, I store tons of frozen vegetables in case I come home and whatever fresh vegetable went bad, I can always whip up something. My pantry always has every kind of bean. And the one staple that’s always in my fridge is my sweetened condensed milk.

COULD YOU TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR CHARITIES AND WHAT’S NEAREST AND DEAREST TO YOUR HEART? My charities are Amigos for Kids. They are an organization whose mission is to alert and prevent child abuse. I sit on the board and I’m really active with that. The second charity where I sit on the board is The New York City Food and Education Fund, and of course anything to do with animals. The Humane Society. I would say that those are my three basics and I always sort of help others when they ask me to donate different things. And I’m always helping friends out with theirs.

WHAT THE FIRST THOUGHT YOU THINK IN THE MORNING AND THE LAST YOU HAVE BEFORE YOU GO TO SLEEP? The first one is “God, I’ve got to go to the gym. and the last one is “Uh, how delicious. My bed!” It feels so good getting into bed.

IT HAS BEEN SO FABULOUS GETTING TO SPEAK WITH YOU. HOW CAN OUR READERS STAY IN TOUCH WITH YOU AND FOLLOW YOU ON TWITTER OR FACEBOOK? I have my website which is http://simplydelicioso.com I am very active, me personally, not my people on my Facebook and my Twitter. My Twitter is @SimplyIngrid. My Facebook is Ingrid Hoffmann Fan page and like I said, I’m continuously all day on my Twitter and my Facebook and I reply to people.

EXCELLENT. I LOOK FORWARD TO TOUCHING BASE WITH YOU AGAIN REAL SOON. Thank you so much. I appreciate your support and hopefully one day we’ll get to meet each other in person.

Curves are good. Being happy is more important than being skinny or fat. But try telling that to a gorgeous 20 year-old girl.

o you have a fear of florals? Have you been brainwashed to think that floral prints are not curve friendly? Well step into my garden and allow me to help you conquer your fear of floral. This spring flowers are blooming everywhere, and not just outside your window during Paris fashion week Prada brought back the 70’s as well as a few other designers who decided to channel the 70’s flowerchild era. Flowers are popping up on hair accessories, handbags, shoes, dresses, rompers, and skirts. We admit floral prints can be tricky when you have a lot of curves but here are a few tricks that you can try to avoid looking like a walking garden. Pair a long floral maxi dress with a cropped motorcycle jacket. If you are short and curvy opt for a high low style maxi with cropped jacket or blazer, this will make you appear longer. Another trick is to mix your floral print, wraps, skirts, pants, and shorts with solids to break things up. But remember to have fun with your wardrobe and get creative with your accessories you’re a fabulous flowerchild not a dying weed. Check out a few of our favorites from Forever 21 Plus that are curve friendly.

BEHIND THE SEAMS: YOUTHEARY KHMER BY KEKE SIMOT

CURVY: WHAT COMPELLED YOU TO BECOME A DESIGNER?

WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY OUTSIDE OF FASHION?

OUTHEARY: I always knew I had an interest in fashion. As an overweight teen, I had difficulty finding clothing that was trendy and fit well. I would buy the closest thing and would modify the garment by sewing on patches, safety pinning additional fabric or drawing something fun with fabric paint. It wasn’t until I was 14 when I was scouted to become a plus sized model that I was exposed to the fashion industry at an early age. After years of modeling unflattering, unoriginal and unfitting clothing, I knew that I had the opportunity to effect change. I got the education, I continued my experiences, and I did just that!

Happiness was something that took me a long time to find. I wasn’t raised in the happiest of homes, a place where I wasn’t sure what love looked like. It wasn’t until I had to leave behind what I knew to a place where I knew nothing. There I found love. Love in friendships, love within myself, and love with God. Once you can figure out how to love, living happily is the easy part.

Y

WHAT WAS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT SINCE YOU BECAME A DESIGNER? One of my proudest moments was founding my nonprofit Pretty Perfect. I had an idea with a publicist to create a camp that invited 50 curvy young ladies to learn fun activities to stay healthy, ways to protect themselves against bullies, listen to successful curvy speakers living their dreams, all the while, building their self-worth and confidence. The entire community came together to make this camp happen. We all get gifts. What matters is how we use our gifts. I was blessed with this platform to be able to reach an audience and provide opportunities for others to continue to use their gifts to effect change.

CURVY | APRIL 2017

WHAT’S BEEN YOUR GREATEST STRUGGLE IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY, PROFESSIONALLY? My greatest struggle has been growing as a business owner. Understanding that things must evolve as time changes. I began my journey in the earlier stages of the plus size industry where there were only a handful of retail chains and independent designers. As the movement grew, that created more opportunities for the plus size industry to grow, as well. Now, we are in a place where curvy is the new black and there is more availability and accessibility to plus size clothing everywhere. The demand was no longer a need, and with that comes a mass production that equates to lower than market pricing. So, ultimately, now that the big retail chains have jumped on board, finally, the need for independent designers is basically extinct. Some argue that we still need well-made one-of-a-kind designs, but once a year events can’t keep independent designers afloat. My goal is to find that median, continue to support other independent designers, find ways to grow together and turn our struggles into success.

WHO ARE YOUR STYLE ICONS AND WHY? My style icon is June Ambrose. She is full of energy, not afraid to be herself, and she makes OTHER people look and feel amazing! The most important thing is that she’s a mother, even though I don’t have children...yet. I see her as a #girlboss because she is able to do what she is passionate about, put her best work forward even if she’s not in the limelight and cook some bomb food for her beautiful family. They say a woman can’t have it all, but I believe when you put others first, you receive everything.

TELL US A FEW THINGS MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU. Well, the most infamous question I get is, “What are you?” I am 100% Cambodian. I am first generation Asian American and am the first to graduate from college. A fun, yet some say not so fun fact is, I turned down a full academic scholarship to 22 different universities to attend Clark Atlanta University an HBCU. No comment on how much I owe Sallie Mae. (laughs)

IF YOU WEREN’T A FASHION DESIGNER WHAT DO YOU WOULD BE DOING? If I weren’t a fashion designer I would be a teacher or a counselor. Helping people is a passion of mine whether through fashion or mentoring, being a humanitarian is my life’s purpose.

They say a woman can’t have it all, but I believe when you put others first, you receive everything.

MUST HAVE 2017

SpringTrends BY BIANCA WILLIAMS

I

t’s SPRING! Everyone waits for this time of the year when we can start thinking about hanging up our goose down coats, wool hats, heavy scarfs and gloves. To bring out our trench coats, loafers, jean jackets, sling back shoes, cardigans and our bright-colored clothing. Spring is a time where flowers blossom and the earth sheds the gloomy layer to make room for the beauty. One of the Spring must have trends of 2017 that I adore so much, and am going to rock this season, is STRIPES… yes, yes, STRIPES. In effect are small stripes, large stripes, diagonal stripes, vertical stripes, and horizontal stripes… everything striped. Stripes are worn in two most common ways for this coming season – Vertical or Horizontal. Horizontal stripes are the figure-flattering stripes to wear to make you appear leaner and taller. Stripped looks can be worn to work or an outing. This timeless look can be casual or dressed up. Another favorite Spring must have trend is flower prints. There is nothing that will make you feel more feminine than a flower print ensemble! Blowing floral dresses, floral print high-waist pants, floral button-up shirts, and flower printed hats. You will definitely be the it person at the next Summer party or barbecue with your floral gone with the wind fabulous dress. Don’t be afraid to match a nice floral print top or floral print bottom with a solid colored top or bottom to grace the office. These new and fantastic trends will definitely have you ready to tackle a workweek or a weekend brunch.

You have to be confident in yourself and your body and love yourself fully and not let what other people think or say about you manipulate your view on yourself and what you should look like or what you should be happy with. – Gigi

WHO IS

? WHO IS GIGI MARIE? I am plus sized model based in southern California. I have been modeling since I was 14 years old and started pinup/ vintage modeling in 2010. I am a member of the non-profit organization Pinups For Patriots. Our mission is to honor and serve our nation’s military, veterans, first responders and their families by supporting and creating unique programs and events that will inspire our nation, foster patriotism, and raise awareness for post traumatic stress disorder. I am a regular model for Unique Vintage, Sleevey Wonders, and NicCoCo Creations. I have also modeled for many more vintage inspired clothing companies and plus size clothing lines.

WHAT SPARKED YOUR INTEREST IN MODELING? I started modeling at a very young age. I began participating in pageants at age 11 and by age 14 I started acting and modeling. Modeling was just something that I always had an interest in even at such a young age. I started subscribing to fashion magazines and watching the sports illustrated swimsuit videos that were owned by my father. My venture into pinup modeling began in 2010. That is when my body started changing when I started to develop a move curvaceous body. I had begun to fall out of the straight sized fashion world and realized that I always had a strong interest in vintage fashion. I was given a few opportunities to dress pinup style and totally fell in love with it. Now I am an active part of the pinup community and affiliated with multiple clothing lines and organizations.

DESCRIBE YOUR FIRST MODELING GIG? My very first gig when I was 15 years old called Red Eye Clothing, a juniors clothing line based out of Arizona and

California. It was an exciting experience, from the shoot my photos were placed in all the malls in Southern California and Arizona. I had many people recognize me from that. I was really proud of the fact that I embodied a real girl that was going to school, doing well in my academics, being involved in extracurricular activities like school clubs and sports, and still able to pursue modeling. It showed that you can still be a “real” person and be a “model” at the same time. This was a great stepping stone for me and is why I advocate for people to both pursue their dreams and an education.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT DIETING IN THE MODELING INDUSTRY? In this industry I have met many models that have eating disorders. Many lives are being affected by the mentality that you have to stay thin. A lot of those people end up hurting themselves because of that mentality. I honestly get happy when I come across straight sized models that eat regularly but maintain an active lifestyle to keep the weight off, because the reality of it is that if you are going to continue to be a straight size model you do have to maintain a certain weight. In plus size modeling we do have a little bit more leeway when it comes to diet and exercise. We can eat a little bit more and not workout as hard as straight models, but still need to maintain a healthy diet. I personally am very healthy with my eating habits, I don’t eat out very often and stay away from fast food. I do most of my cooking at home, which usually consist of chicken and veggies or fish and veggies for dinner. A normal breakfast, for me is oatmeal or egg whites or something along the lines, and my lunches are usually very sensible. I don’t over eat, I try to eat often and smart. I try to replace the bad choices with smart ones.

ARE THERE ANY SORT OF ROLE MODELS THAT YOU LOOKED UP TO? Niki Taylor was my idol growing up. As a model she had campaigns for Cover Girl and Sports Illustrated. She just always had such a positive outlook on life and always wore the most beautiful smile on her face no matter what she was going through. There were a lot of rough times for Niki. Her sister passed away then she was involved in a very serious car accident that nearly took her own life as well. But she always kept that great big smile on her face and remained positive throughout it all.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE PROS’ AND CONS OF BEING A MODEL IN THE CURVY WORLD? There is definitely a big sense of judgment working in the curvy community. There is always some sort of feedback CURVY | APRIL 2017

175

whether it be negative or positive from almost every source. You’re going to have those people that completely embrace it and love it but on the opposite side of that you’re going to have the people that hate it, that just can’t stand the idea of someone not being the “perfect size”, I have personally gone through many different sizes in my life, when I was in high school I was very petite, very small. Then I became involved in sports which helped me develop a lot of muscle. After high school I began gaining “other” weight from being stressed about work and developing more as a woman...your body changes over time. Through gaining weight I realized how much more I liked my body. Not being very thin and having curves on me made me feel good, it made me feel more confident and sexy. Though I have always tried to stay healthy with it. I have had people say that they look up to me for embracing my body at the size that it is. I have always just wanted people to know that you can be beautiful and healthy no matter what size your body is. There are people that are made to be thin genetically and there are people that are genetically a bigger frame. You can’t force your body to be something that it isn’t, You can’t force yourself to become anorexic to achieve a size of a person who is made to be a small person, or eat tons of unhealthy food to try and gain curves if you are naturally small. It isn’t healthy doing either of those. You need to eat right, give into cravings every now and then, and stay active so that you develop the way you are intended to be. I like to advocate for people to love and embrace their natural bodies.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR AN ASPIRING CURVY MODEL TRYING TO BREAK INTO THIS INDUSTRY? You have to have a strong heart and a strong personality because you are always going to come in contact with people that are going to put you down and not be happy with you and point out each and every flaw that you have. You have to be confident in yourself and your body and love yourself fully and not let what other people think or say about you manipulate your view on yourself and what you should look like or what you should be happy with.
