SPOTLIGHT ON SERVICE AWARDS

During the ceremony a short description of each volunteer and the service she has provided was read. State Adult New Readers Book Club collections.

Congratulations to this year’s Spotlight On Service award winners! Two of the ten volunteers chosen from throughout the state of Illinois were our very own Marlene Greenberg and Marlene Delaney. A ceremony was held in the atrium of the Illinois State Library on Monday, April 30th. Both award winners, along with Read to Learn staff members Jo Ann Fletcher and Laurie Hoffman, traveled to Springfield for the presentation. The awards were presented by Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White and Illinois State Library Deputy Director Greg McCormick. Secretary White remarked, “...I am also proud to recognize our outstanding volunteer tutors for their generosity and encouragement in helping literacy students achieve their utmost potential.” Marlene Greenberg is a passionate and dedicated tutor. As her 85th birthday approaches, she warmly recalls how she innocently walked into the Palatine Library to "help" one day and how that started a 20-year journey of helping others. Marlene takes tutoring way beyond the classroom and supplements her lesson plans with authentic materials such as menus from restaurants, medical forms, and role plays with her students. Each winner was presented with a plaque and a personalized Illinois Blue Book. Congratulations and thank you to both Marlene Delaney and Marlene Greenberg!
