How to Tell If Your Shower Screen is Leaking

Dealing with a Leaky Shower Screen Leaks from a shower screen or shower doors are commonly very obvious. Water accumulations on the floor or on the outside of the shower screen usually indicate that water is escaping the shower enclosure. Some leaks manage to get under carpet or other floor coverings and are not immediately visible. Check the area around the screen from time to time to make sure there are no hidden or visible leaks.

The Problem These leaks can cause any number of problems. Wet areas are unsightly and can contribute to the overall humidity levels in the home which can be uncomfortable in warm weather and lead to mold and mildew growth. Mold spores can cause significant health problems if left untreated. Wet areas can also cause decay to wallboards and floor sheathing which can adversely impact the structure of the home. For all these reasons, most people try to stop the leaks at the source as soon as possible.

Limited Solutions Depending on where the leak occurs, caulking with waterproof materials may solve the problem. If the leak occurs between the frame of the screen and the walls or shower enclosure, caulking may work best. Use a waterproof silicone caulk and fill in the gaps between the frame and shower enclosure. This type of repair eliminates the leak without major expense and keeps the shower in service.

Bigger Projects Replacing the shower screen or door may be the only option if the leak occurs at the door itself. Replacement screens are available from home improvement and plumbing outlets. However, this might be the time to update the entire shower to a new look.

Options include replacing the shower surround, updating the controls, replacing the shower head and adding a new screen. This process can produce an entire new shower. Some portions of the project, such as replacing the surrounds can be a do-it-yourself project for the homeowner with the proper tools and skills. Replacing the shower controls takes the skills and expertise of a plumber.

While the shower is removed, check the area for water damage. It is easier to repair water damaged flooring or wall sheathing when the shower is not in place. These types of repairs are more expensive and can leave the homeowner without a working shower for several days.

The Benefits Updating the entire shower not only eliminates the leaks around the screen or door, but can improve the appearance of the bathroom and the value of the home. The new shower might also be the first step in updating the whole bathroom providing added benefits to the homeowner.
