A MESSAGE FROM
JEFF CHAPMAN, PRESIDENT
the equipment but about the experience for the customer and the employee. Bottom line: if we take good care of the customer and treat them well, then the company will prosper. And we must be doing a pretty good job of that because we have grown, prospered and flourished. I believe it’s because we never have lost sight of the real reason we’re here. We take that commitment to people beyond the business and into our community. We support, through donations and volunteer work, a number of local civic and charitable organizations that work hard every day to change lives and help our community grow healthier and stronger. One of these is Progress House, which seeks to help men that have struggled with addiction and are currently in recovery, transition to a life before the ravages of addiction. Sadly, many of us have direct or indirect contact with someone who has struggled with addiction. We believe in the philosophy of Progress House and have committed ourselves to help. We also support the Humane Society for Hamilton County which is home to one of the largest no-kill facilities in the nation. We are passionate about the work they do as well. Please take a look at the stories in the magazine about both agencies and consider supporting them as we have. At Chapman Heating, Air Conditioning & Plumbing, we are more than a heating and air conditioning company you can depend on; we are the company you can trust. Superior service, technical excellence and professional employees – that’s our commitment to you each and every day.

or the past 30 years, Chapman Heating, Air Conditioning & Plumbing has had a very specific set of core values that begin with the most important resource any successful business simply must have: a commitment to value people, employees and customers alike. At Chapman Heating, Air Conditioning & Plumbing we believe firmly and wholeheartedly that we’re not in the air conditioning business, we’re in the people business. That philosophy drives us in our business beginning with our own people; we believe in treating our co-workers as if they were customers, with respect, dignity and compassion. I’ve often said, albeit rhetorically, if we can’t treat our co-workers as customers then how do we treat our customers? I believe that in the final analysis, it’s not about

THE STORY OF OUR HUMBLE BEGINNINGS
W
hen Jeff Chapman was around nine years old, his career fate was sealed, though he likely didn’t know it at the time; fourth grade boys have other really important stuff on their minds like baseball and bike riding. But it was at that time that Jeff’s father packed up the family and headed to Indianapolis where he took a job with Bryant Heating & Cooling Manufacturing. Around eight years later, following his graduation from high school, Jeff also joined Bryant, a local HVAC dealer and it wasn’t long, just four short years after starting with Bryant, Jeff decided to strike out on his own and open his own heating and cooling business. When Jeff speaks about these days he’s struck by a thought: “On a personal level, Bryant and the heating and cooling business has fed, clothed and sheltered me for over 50 years.” Something the 9-year-old Jeff could never have imagined. Beginning in 1983, when he first created Chapman Heating, Air Conditioning & Plumbing, until 1992, Jeff worked around the clock to grow and expand the business, dramatically. Over the course of those years, the company remained in its same location, but recently an 8,000 square foot expansion was realized plus a 7,000 square foot building at another location for the plumbing operation. There’s no stopping Jeff! Indeed, an additional 12,000 square foot expansion is slated for the near future, he says. But perhaps even bigger than the increasing size of Chapman Heating, Air Conditioning & Plumbing headquarters is this monumental development: Jeff has increased the size of the company through a number of acquisitions, including perhaps the most significant -- the purchase of the original Bryant Heating & Cooling dealer, a company established in 1940, where Jeff worked from 1979 to 1981. Talk about coming full circle. 8
COOL LIVING I ChapmanHeating.com
“We are so proud to have to the flag ship company under our name,” Jeff says proudly. “We like to consider ourselves the flagship for the Bryant brand in Indianapolis. Sometimes we like to say we are a home town man with a home town brand.” THE ACCOLADES AND AWARDS Emblazoned on every Chapman service vehicle is the saying, “The Man For All Seasons.” Apropos of not just the business but of Jeff Chapman himself, the motto is one that sticks with you. And the industry, Bryant in particular, has praised Chapman Heating, Air Conditioning & Plumbing for its excellence in the field. Indeed, in 2013 and 2014 Chapman won the Bryant Circle of Champions and in the summer of 2015, in recognition of what Bryant describes as “exemplary customer service and an unyielding commitment to excellence,” Chapman was honored with the Bryant’s Medal of Excellence. Bryant Vice President of Marketing Matthew Pine said at the time of the award, that the “distinction highlights the very best of that esteemed group of dealers…” and that the “entire Bryant family of dealers can look toward Chapman Heating, Air Conditioning and Plumbing as an example of how to take care of customers, run a successful business and always do whatever it takes.” Pine went even further when he said Chapman’s success “is based on years of building trust in their community, and that commitment to customers and exacting performance have established Chapman Heating, Air Conditioning and Plumbing as one of the most trusted in the wide Bryant family of dealers.”
AT CHAPMAN, IT’S PEOPLE FIRST For Jeff Chapman, the honor validated one of his core principles: in order for a company to be truly successful, it must value people. “My firm belief is we’re not in the air conditioning business we are in the people business at all levels and it starts with our own people, treating our co-workers as customers,” he says, “At the end of the day it’s really not about the box or the equipment it’s really about the experience for the customer and the employee,” Jeff says. “We know that if we take care of the customer and treat them well, then the company will prosper. Which is how we’ll be able to make better lives for our employees, which is the real reason we’re here, we try not to lose sight of that.” 317-291-4909 I COOL LIVING

Faster Hot Water— A Turn of the Knob Away.
If
you’re like most people, when you take a shower or need hot water, you first turn on the hot water and let it run and run and run, until finally all the cold water is out of the line and the hot water starts to flow. Not only is this a big waste of water, but it’s also a waste of money.
Now, imagine turning on a shower or any other hot water tap and getting hot water almost immediately. Thanks to the new Rinnai Ultra Series RUR Tankless Water Heater, that’s now a possibility. Without getting too technical, Rinnai’s RUR models use thermal bypass technology to send unlimited hot water wherever and whenever it’s needed, all in one comprehensive system. By keeping a steady supply of heated water in the water supply line, the RUR makes hot water rapidly available in showers, sinks and appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers. You can also use the 24-hour digital controller that’s included in the box to save energy by only having hot water immediately available in the water line when you’re most likely to need it — such as in the morning or in the evening. At all other times, the unit would function like a traditional tankless water heater.

WATER HEATERS 101
W
e have all heard people boast about having the same water heater forever, and they typically say that it “still runs like a champ,” but, of course, that’s only until it doesn’t.
No hot water heater has an unlimited lifespan. The lifespan of a water heater depends on both the quality of the appliance, and the quality of the water running through it. People who live in areas with hard water or areas with humid climates may have to replace a water heater more often. Don’t be faced with making the decision on your next water heater when in crisis mode. The options for heating water have become more varied than ever before. The new high-efficiency models save on energy, and incentives from area utility companies and possible manufacturer rebates make it worthwhile to do your homework in advance. Research your options on water heaters in advance, talk to a trusted advisor, and learn about pricing and options. CONVENTIONAL WATER HEATER MAINTENANCE As with any piece of equipment or appliance that works day in and day out, a maintenance plan can help avoid problems. Waiting until a water heater shows signs of trouble may be too late. Here are a few maintenance tips to prolong the life of your conventional water heater and keep it running efficiently: Get rid of collected sediment to keep the unit running efficiently and prevent corrosion. Drain the water heater twice a year to keep a water heater healthy. Test the pressure relief valve by lifting the valve handle and letting it snap back. This should release a burst of water into the overflow drainpipe. If it doesn’t have a burst of water, have a new valve installed. 12
COOL LIVING I ChapmanHeating.com
Maintain the temperature setting on the thermostat at 120 degrees, reducing damage to the tank caused by overheating. If a conventional water heater is not producing as much hot water as you expect, it’s time to have it checked. Small leaks can go undetected for a long period of time, so a visual check once a month is prudent. The worst situation is when there is a flood of water that pours out of the water heater, causing floor or other home damage REPLACE OR REPAIR A water heater is the quiet background worker in any house, that gets a constant workout and is always expected to perform, until it doesn’t. If your water heater is more than 10 years old, leaks around the base of the tank, works erratically or not very well, it probably needs to be replaced. In any case, make sure that an electrical problem, such as a blown fuse or tripped breaker, is not the reason for the unit failing. Before making any repairs, or purchasing a new water heater, check the nameplate on the side of your current unit. Here you will find helpful information including the tank capacity, insulation R-value, installation guidelines, working pressure, model and serial number. If you have an electric water heater, the nameplate will also list the wattage capacity and voltage of the heating elements. This information will serve as the starting point in your search for replacement or for parts. If you choose to replace an electric unit for a gas unit-or vice versa, a professional will need to be contracted. Either way, a professional can provide a variety of options that will help you make your decision, based on your needs. They will know how to get the job done quickly while meeting required building safety codes.
TYPES OF WATER HEATERS Most water heaters are gas or electric, but choices are no longer limited. Compare the options to determine the water heater best suited for you: Electric – Uses 1 or 2 heating elements to heat water. Electric water heaters can be used “almost” anywhere. Natural Gas or Propane – Uses a burner to heat water; needs circulating air; cannot store combustibles nearby and must be vented. Gas water heaters are usually installed in a home that has existing gas for another appliance, like a furnace, stove or fireplace. Heat Pump – Uses energy from outside or inside air; larger than standard water heaters. It is practical to consider an upgrade when purchasing a new water heater. For example: if space allows, you may choose to increase the unit’s holding capacity to accommodate a growing family, or consider an on-demand tankless water heater to save on space and energy. Replacement time is the perfect time to lower your energy bill by choosing a water heater that is more energy efficient. When looking at water heaters, consider these points: Recovery Rate – Conventional water heaters are rated for the number of gallons that can be heated per hour. The greater your demand for hot water, the higher the recovery rate needed.
CONSIDER THESE POINTS WHEN DECIDING WHAT TO DO OR WHO TO WORK WITH ON REPLACEMENT: A building permit is usually required when replacing a water heater. This is for the safety of the occupants and the future homeowners. If you are buying a home and they have indicated that the water heater has been replaced, verify that it was permitted or it may not have been installed correctly. Conventional water heaters are heavy and very bulky, so consider this when planning a replacement.
Location Dimensions – The height and width of the space must be considered. The physical space may limit your ability to upgrade a unit. Energy Efficiency – ENERGY STAR® is the trusted, government-backed label that posts the energy efficiency of a unit. It provides consumers with an estimated annual cost of operations.
How do you dispose of an old water heater? Local codes govern the disposal of such appliances. Know what those are before you proceed or you might have a new piece of yard art for a while. 317-291-4909 I COOL LIVING

CHAPMAN & GEOTHERMAL
A PERFECT MATCH by Maxine Reneé
Homeowner’s in the local community see the value of geothermal and have worked closely with Chapman to help to shrink the impact heating and cooling has on the earth.
H
umans have been harnessing the natural, raw power of the Earth to sustain comfortable living at low impact and cost to the environment since as early as 300 BC in China. Today’s engineers and visionaries have mastered a system that, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “is one of the most energy efficient heating and cooling systems available:” geothermal.
How do geothermal systems work in nature? Temperatures inside the earth, at the core-mantle boundary, may reach over 7,200 degrees Fahrenheit flowing continuously outward. This flow is estimated to be equivalent to 42 million megawatts of pure energy. However, the heat usually remains trapped beneath the earth’s crust, heating nearby rock and water sometimes to levels as hot as 700 degrees Fahrenheit. When the earth heats the water, hot water or steam can be trapped in permeable and porous rocks under a layer of waterproof rock and thus a geothermal reservoir can form. Hundreds of thousands of geothermal heating and cooling systems have been installed since the inception of a commercial pump system in America
14

in the late 1940s. These revolutionary systems powered the first residential open loop systems in Ohio and were used commercially in Oregon to heat the Commonwealth Building in Portland. In the 1950s, a company in New Zealand produced an entire geothermal energy plant that produced clean energy, eliminating the need for fossil fuels. Homeowner’s in the local community see the value of geothermal and have worked closely with Chapman to help shrink the impact heating and cooling has on the earth. Why the demand for geothermal? In addition to the numerous comfort factors and design benefits, it is a renewable resource drawing its power from the heat emanating from the interior of the Earth, which is virtually a limitless resource. The electricity that powers geothermal heating/ cooling pumps only collects, concentrates and delivers energy all without producing unnecessary heat. This is vital in helping to mitigate global warming and replace the use of fossil fuels. Compared with other heating and cooling systems, GHPs reduce electricity 30-60 percent and it is a resource that will never freeze or cease to be a viable energy option.
According to Bryant, the overall benefits of geothermal are: LOWER OPERATING COST A Bryant geothermal system operates more efficiently than ordinary heating and air conditioning systems because it can deliver an astounding five units of energy for every one unit of electrical energy used. By combining stored earth energy with safe electric power, many Bryant owners realize savings up to 70 percent for heating, cooling, and hot water. ENHANCED COMFORT Geothermal systems provide precise distribution of comfortable air all year long, eliminating hot spots and cold spots. During heating, you’ll experience warm air without the hot blasts associated with ordinary gas furnaces, or the cooler air of an air source heat pump. Additionally, when cooling, the geothermal systems deliver cool, dehumidified air. QUIET Unlike ordinary air conditioners or heat pumps, there’s no noisy outdoor unit to disturb your outside environment or your neighbors. Bryant geothermal systems are designed and constructed for quiet operation. RELIABLE Unlike air conditioners and heat pumps, geothermal systems are installed indoors, so they are not subject to wear and tear caused by rain, snow, ice, debris, extreme temperatures or vandalism. Geothermal systems have proven to be very reliable and require less maintenance. ENVIRONMENTALLY-FRIENDLY According to the Department of Energy and the EPA, geothermal systems are the most environmentally friendly way to heat and cool your home. Geothermal systems emit no carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide or other greenhouse gasses, which are considered to be major contributors to environmental air pollution. They are truly a natural, green heat pump. As we become more technologically advanced and conscious of the everexpanding world around us, geothermal systems are an excellent energysaving alternative with the smallest carbon footprint. The traditional ways in which humans have chosen to heat and cool living and working environments by use of fossil fuels is a trend that is fading. Through government and industry-funded research and experience over the last 100 years, the cost of generating geothermal power is decreasing. The future is one of clean, reusable and safe energy sources that minimize pollution and improve overall quality of life: the geothermal solution.
Packaged Geothermal Heat Pumps When it comes to heating and cooling solutions, geothermal systems are extremely efficient. These packaged systems work quietly to deliver comfort in variable speed Preferred™ models or the multi-speed Legacy™ line. With the evaporator coil, condenser and compressor all in one cabinet, you can evenly heat or cool large homes easily.

ACTIONS DO SPEAK LOUDER by Ellyn Santiago
F
irst established in 1984, the Humane Society for Hamilton County provides a safe haven for unwanted animals. But its beginnings were very humble starting out with a volunteer-supported location in downtown Noblesville in 1989. Three years later, after Herculean fundraising, ground was broken on the Humane Society’s animal shelter, which would open its doors to welcome the county’s lost, stray or unwanted animals in January of 1993. Not only does the shelter provide refuge for unwanted or abandoned animals, as space and resources permit, the Humane Society for Hamilton County provides free, temporary shelter to animals owned by victims of domestic abuse, seniors who must be hospitalized and have no family to assist, victims of house fires or natural disasters, and car crash where a pet is involved. The Humane Society also partners with ‘Good Samaritan,’ the Hamilton County collaborative network of non-profits, to provide free pet food for those struggling financially.
16
An open-admission, no-kill shelter, the Humane Society for Hamilton County doesn’t turn away animals; it does not discriminate based on breed, age, special medical needs or disability. In 2012, for example, it received 3,220 stray and unwanted animals. The placement rate that year was an astounding 90.3 percent; striking given the national placement rate was 35 percent. And in 2014, the placement rate was nearly 98 percent. According to Humane Society for Hamilton County executive director Rebecca Stevens, who recently celebrated her 10th anniversary with the agency, the shelter is committed to placing animals, not euthanizing them. “There are very few shelters in the country that are truly no-kill and I am so proud to be a part of an organization that has achieved this extraordinary goal,” she says. An extraordinary goal especially since the Humane Society for Hamilton County relies completely on donations: “The success of the HSHC relies monumentally on the good will and charitable nature of those who live within the community.”
COOL LIVING I ChapmanHeating.com
The Humane Society for Hamilton County is an important cause for Jeff Chapman of Chapman Heating & Air Conditioning and his family of employees. “A lot of people here and everywhere, really, feel strongly about the work of the Humane Society; it’s an employee favorite and we’re proud to be associated with it.” That association began when, in early 2013, Jeff first visited the shelter. Invested in his community and realizing the importance of adoption rather than purchasing a pet, Jeff offered his support and helped the Humane Society to raise much needed funds. And he went further by putting his heart into it when he and his family adopted a 5-year-old Yorkie through the Humane Society. Through his now close relationship with the shelter, he recognized a problem that he could absolutely help fix. During summer, the shelter’s dog intake area, where new arrivals usually remain for several days before space opens up in the kennel, was often unbearably hot both for dogs and their human caretakers. Sometimes there would be as many as 15 to 20 dogs at a time with no air circulation, no windows and no ceiling fans.
THAN WORDS Who better to help with this but Jeff Chapman! In early June of 2014, Jeff donated and installed a new heating and cooling system! “As the proud new parent of a pup that I adopted from the Humane Society, I know how important it is to give these animals a safe place to stay while they wait to be adopted,” he said at the time in a statement. “The Humane Society for Hamilton County does so many great things for the community that it’s our pleasure along with Scott Plumbing to donate a new HVAC system.” The company was also the Humane Society’s Corporate Sponsor of 2014. Rebecca says Chapman’s generosity has been life-changing for shelter pets and volunteers: “It was a turning point for the quality of life for everyone -- animal and human alike.” As Rebecca Stevens honors Jeff Chapman’s bigheartedness, he returns the favor in a very big way. So moved by her selfless devotion to the Humane Society and its principles, Jeff selected her for the prestigious Bryant True Heroes Award, which acknowledges
individuals who selflessly devote their lives to serving others. In August of 2014, Stevens was recognized as the recipient of the Bryant True Heroes Award, the first ever in the state of Indiana. “She lives to help find these animals’ good homes. Rebecca has shown how a not for profit organization can make a positive impact on the community,” Jeff says. “We wanted to honor her for all of her hard work and dedication to keeping these animals safe. She is the prime example of a true hero.” Jeff Chapman also mentions the importance of specific Humane Society programs that he’s proud to help support including Pets Healing Vets, which pairs qualifying veterans from active duty with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms or Traumatic Brain Injury with shelter animals in need of a home. “These are such good programs and the Humane Society does very good work,” Jeff says.
The folks at Chapman Heating & Air Conditioning take their volunteer commitment to the Humane Society for Hamilton County very seriously. Plus, they really pups. And one Pup in particular is very close to the collective hearts of Chapman, the largest independent Bryant dealer in Indianapolis: the original Bryant Pup, born in 1927. The story goes that in the late 1920s, with “record sales in gravity gas furnaces, Bryant begins to develop a reputation for reliable performance.” It was then the company introduced Pup, its mascot and ads featuring the Boston Terrier began appearing in newspapers and magazines across the country touting just how easy the new furnace was to use, so easy in fact, one could” “Let the Pup be Furnace Man.” “We’ve always had a soft spot for Pup,” Jeff says. And to prove it, the Chapmen office is loaded with Pup memorabilia! by Ellyn Santiago

WHY
A HEAT PUMP IS A GREAT OPTION
W
hen it comes to home appliances, would you agree that the more efficient, the better? Installing a heat pump for heating and air conditioning may be the best solution for keeping your home comfortable year round. During warmer months, a heat pump works as an air conditioner, extracting heat from inside the home and transferring it to the outdoor air. In colder weather, however, the process reverses. The unit collects heat from the outdoor air to transfer inside your home. Cool or cold outside air, nevertheless still contains some heat. When there’s not enough heat in the outside air to meet the demand of the thermostat setting, an electric heater supplements the outdoor air to warm the home. Instead of a furnace that turns fossil fuels or electricity into heat, the heat pump collects heat that already exists in the outdoor air. It’s a matter of producing versus collecting. A heat pump produces two to three times more heat than the energy it uses, and today’s heat pumps produce warm and comfortable air.
greater savings. A SEER of 12.00 to 13.00 is typical in homes over eight or ten years old, and a new, higher efficiency heat pump can be as much as 50 percent more efficient. If a consumer’s non-electric furnace is still working, an add-on heat pump is an effective option. A dual-fuel system shares the heating load, but never at the same time. Each system operates when it is the most cost effective. The heat pump will be the primary heating and cooling system. However, when the temperature drops below the heat pump’s ‘set-point’ (the point at which the heat pump no longer is the most efficient source of heat) the furnace will take over until the temperature rises enough for the heat pump to operate more efficiently. “Heat pumps are efficient, quiet and provide significant savings,” says Jeff Chapman, president of Chapman Heating and Air Conditioning. “The amount a consumer can save depends on many factors, including building temperature, construction quality and electric rates.
A heat pump also produces savings while cooling a home. A SEER (Seasonal Energy “We get to capture the sweet spot of efEfficiency Ratio) rating measures cooling ficiency and comfort for each system. This efficiency. A higher SEER number produces is a very popular system and many of our customers choose to go this route.”
“Heat pumps are efficient, quiet and provide significant savings, says Jeff Chapman. The amount a consumer can save depends on many factors, including building temperature, construction quality and electric rates.”

EVEN YOUR AC NEEDS A CHECK UP
Y
our air conditioner is one of the hardest working appliances in your home, and it deserves some love and special attention. At least once a year, it’s important to give your ac system a full inspection and tune-up, to assure that it’s running smoothly when you need it most. Your air conditioner runs constantly for most of the year. During that time, filters will become dirty, coils can become caked with dust, blockages may develop, and system leaks may become worse. Any number of issues may develop in your system while it’s actively working overtime to cool your home and, conversely, your system may also develop problems while it’s dormant during the winter months. Servicing your unit allows any potential concerns to be spotted early, before they become worse. If your air conditioning system has a small problem that you allow to spiral downward, a major repair could be in your future. The cost of an ac repair – or worse, a full system replacement – is almost certainly going to be more expensive than a maintenance appointment. Look at it this way: If your car needs an oil change and you neglect to take care of it, you could end up blowing the engine. Your air conditioner works much in the same way; you have to maintain it regularly, or you risk causing serious damage that could end up costing you a small fortune. The longevity and health of your system is only part of the reason why regular upkeep is a great idea. Annual maintenance assures that your system is working as efficiently as possible, using only the amount of energy it needs to get the job done. In short, keeping your system clean and tuned-up improves energy efficiency, and will likely save you money on energy bills.
The longevity and health of your system is only part of the reason why regular upkeep is a great idea. Annual maintenance assures that your system is working as efficiently as possible, using only the amount of energy it needs to get the job done. 20
COOL LIVING I ChapmanHeating.com
For older systems, this annual maintenance is even more important, and not just because it’s at increased risk for breaking down. Older systems are less energy-efficient and, combined with the rising cost of power, saving money while using them can be a real hassle. By paying for a relatively inexpensive service call once or twice a year, you’re almost assuredly going to get that money back in terms of what you’ll save on bills. A maintenance visit keeps all systems running at an optimal level, and for older systems it may be what prevents a major malfunction. Regular maintenance has an up-front cost, but neglecting to do it could be far more expensive. In the end, a large repair bill is going to cost you far more, and the savings you’ll reap on energy bills are worth the cost of an appointment. Remember, no machine is designed to work forever. Your ac system needs to be taken care of properly, and doing so could expand its lifespan well beyond the years the manufacturer ever intended. 317-291-4909 I COOL LIVING

WHY A BRYANT FURNACE MAY BE RIGHT FOR YOU
A
ccording to the Department of Energy, heating is the largest energy expense for the average U.S. home, accounting for roughly 45 percent of energy bills. With a big chunk of your paycheck earmarked for heating costs, it’s important to choose a heating system that’s best for you, and there are many to choose from. Furnaces may have once been considered inefficient, mainly some were, but the newest gas models are anything but, and might be right for you and your family. Here are some furnace advantages: Efficiency: The majority of furnaces produced within the last several years are up to 98 percent energy efficient, meaning 98 percent of the energy taken is used to generate or distribute heat. This is as high as any efficiency you’ll find with other heat sources. Flexibility: There are many different models and sizes that can run on a range of fuel types. Also, this means finding a furnace that will ideally suit a particular home isn’t difficult. Another thing that makes furnaces so flexible is that they can often be hooked up to existing ducts. So if your home already has ductwork installed, you can easily connect a furnace without having to install extra pipes, radiators, and baseboard heaters. Size: Furnaces come in a variety of sizes and can often be quite small, the burners, heat exchangers, and blower arranged together in a compact manner. Boilers, on the other hand, require large tanks of hot water and thus take up more space. Location: Furnaces are often called central heating systems because they usually occupy a central location inside your home. In most instances, this will be in the basement, which won’t lower the aesthetic value of the home. 22

For those who have had a gas furnace, you know regular maintenance helps extend the life of your system. Spending a little money every year to have your system inspected now can keep it running for years to come.
Faster Heating: Furnaces work almost immediately to bring heat into your home, whereas a heat source like a boiler has to heat up a full water tank each time you need warmth. This can take a while. Newer, high efficiency furnaces use a two stage burner, which not only provides faster heating, but also better distribution of that heat. The benefits are twofold: you don’t waste energy (and money) by overheating when turning the furnace on and your home is more evenly heated no noticeable hot and cold zones Gas Furnaces: A gas furnace reacts when the room air temperature drops below the programmed setting on your thermostat. Best Models: Located in Indiana, Bryant is the world’s largest furnace manufacturer and Chapman is a proud supporter of Bryant and all of their products.

EIGHT
PLUMBING TIPS
EVERY HOMEOWNER SHOULD KNOW
Dishwashers and Washing Machines
Drains
Garbage Disposals
Water Quality
It may be a wise idea to run your dishwasher and washing machines at night or while you’re busy with other things. This helps conserve warm water and stabilize water pressure in the home. Remember to keep these machines clean – remove any debris from filters are drains.
Turn the disposal on before you add food, and watch what you throw in there. Avoid bones and other difficult-to-grind foods that could damage your unit. After use, continue to run water in order to flush food particles down the line.
26
COOL LIVING I ChapmanHeating.com
Never pour oil down the drains. Avoid and remove any hair or food that may be blocking the flow of water. After doing dishes, let the water run for a minute to assure that any grease and debris is washed away.
Have your water tested for any imperfections, and always filter your water before you drink it. Most homes would also benefit from a complete water purification and softener system. These remove hard minerals and filter out unwanted additives.
Outdoor Water Flow
Valves
Toilets
Water Heater
Keep your gutters clean and free of debris. If your property contains a drainage ditch, remember to keep it mowed and remove any tree branches or other items that could potentially block the flow of water.
Never flush tissues, cotton swabs, tampons, or anything else down the toilet that shouldn’t go there. Make sure to check to see that your tank refills and flushes properly. If you notice any clogs or slow draining, fix it immediately.
Turn your valves on and off from time-to-time to prevent them from sticking. Consider adding some sealant or lubricant to stop outside valves from rusting shut.
To prevent burns, keep your water heater turned to a safe temperature. If your water heater is over 10 years old, consider a replacement. It’s likely burning too much energy and if it ends up failing, a repair could end up costing you big.

KNOW THE SYMPTOMS: FAILING PIPES
T
he water pipes that supply most central Indiana homes, whether galvanized or copper, have about a 50-year life span, and after about 10 years they can begin to become compromised. If you’re noticing that joints are turning colors or are encrusted with mineral deposits, you probably have a pipe that’s about to fail. “If you’ve experienced uneven water flow in different faucets in your home, or if you’ve noticed any type of corrosion around the pipes, call us,” said Jeff Chapman, president of Chapman Heating, Air Conditioning and Plumbing. “Don’t wait for that inevitable leak. We’ll check all of the pipes, marking those that need to be replaced. We’ll also evaluate the benefits of replacement in the original location of the pipe. Or, if they are under a slab or in a location that would require extensive damage to walls or ceilings, we will recommend a repair. Another serious problem is pinhole leaks in the copper pipes. You may hear something that sounds somewhat like a toilet running quietly. If you’ve heard that sound once and it was discovered as a pinhole leak, you’ll know immediately if you hear it again that there’s a new leak. Check your meter. If the dial is spinning while no water appliance is in use, one or more pinhole leaks are probably the problem. These leaks can happen anywhere along the supply line piping, and usually are located under flooring, in slabs, in the foundation or in walls. Simply repairing one leak does not guarantee there won’t be more. In fact, the opposite is true. If you see or find one, it’s almost guaranteed that there are more to follow. Not only are those pipes going to continue to leak, causing untold damage to your home, but your water bills will be staggering. Replacing plumbing for an entire house is an arduous job, as much of the work needs to be done in a hot, dusty crawl space. The Chapman team is experienced with this type of work, and will find creative ways to do as little damage as possible to drywall and flooring. If your home has a center island in the kitchen, for example, they’ll snake the pipes through the wall and under the floor rather than tearing out the tiles and cabinetry. And they’ll divide the job into sections, so you still have access to water in part of your house while the other parts are being re-plumbed. Turn to the professionals at Chapman to tackle the problem. They have the experience, knowledge, skills and tools to address the pipe repair or replacement and resolve it quickly, with a commitment to leaving your home in better shape than when they started the job. For more information, or to schedule a leak/pipe evaluation call Chapman at 317-291-4909.

MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC DUCT-FREE
AIR CONDITIONERS OFFER MULTIPLE BENEFITS
by Maxine Reneé
D
uctless mini-split or duct-free system HVAC units can be a useful alternative to cool and heat homes and businesses. Through a variety of sizes and capabilities of controlling the air temperature in individual zones or rooms in the building, they offer both economic and environmental advantages. HVAC companies like Chapman are installing them in multifamily housing, renovations of older single-family homes, as well as businesses’ server rooms, waiting rooms and office spaces. They also have a money and energy savings advantage when some areas of an office space are used infrequently or not at all (such as a build-out waiting for occupancy), by only conditioning the space that is occupied. Duct-free systems, as the name implies, have no duct work and consist of an outdoor condenser and an indoor air-handling unit. These are linked together with tubing that houses the power cable, refrigerant tubing, and a drain tube for condensation. In many ways, they operate in a manner quite similar to a standard air conditioning system. Jeff Chapman, President of Chapman, noted that the main advantages of duct-free systems are ease of installation, cost savings, energy savings and flexibility in locating the system for cosmetic concerns and sound control as well as logistical applications. Chapman also highlighted the fact that his company is recognized as a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractor “The benefits are often overlooked by customers, but we like to point out that duct-free systems can be installed in places where conventional ducted systems simply can’t go. Options for interior design include ceiling and wall mounted units, drop ceiling applications and even a picture gallery unit that allows the owner to customize the look of the space,” he said. “Floor-standing models are also avail30

An error here could result in wasted energy, improper temperature or humidity control, and greater long-term operational expenses.” Jeff encourages home and business owners replacing existing systems, building new or remodeling to consider duct-free systems. “The cost savings can be significant in terms of installation and energy use without compromising the comfort level of the rooms or occupants. Our professional technicians are continuously trained to help customers determine the best options for cooling and heating your home or business.”
More than three decades ago, Mitsubishi Electric launched its North American HVAC division bringing ductless systems to the U.S. Within seven years, it had begun its campaign to enlist quality dealers and by 2009, it introduced its Star Lineup , many are EnergyStar rated and qualify for federal tax credits. Just two years later, its split-ductless systems won the Top 10 Product Award from BuildingGreen. For decades now, Mitsubishi Electric US, Inc. Cooling & Heating Division’s advanced climate control systems have provided personalized comfort while conserving energy and promoting environmental sustainability. Mitsubishi Electric is proud to be the third largest manufacturer of cooling and heating systems in the world. But its goal is to be first globally in providing “comfort without compromise.”

HARD WATER NO MORE You know the water is ‘hard,’ when after washing your hands, for example, there’s a residue left behind; soap often reacts with the calcium and forms, for lack of a more delicate word, scum. by Ellyn Santiago
T
here are so many things to love about Indiana. Hard water is not among them. In Indiana, not unlike most of the country, hard water is an unfortunate reality. Some might say Indiana is famous for its hard water; that kind of fame Hoosiers can do without. Nonetheless, it’s a reality folks live with every day. According to the U. S. Geological Survey, Indiana’s ‘grains per gallon’ rate of 14 makes the water not just hard, but “very hard.” The list of hard water crimes is long. From the aesthetic issues that accompany hard water to the potentially costly ones. And while there’s little evidence to support claims that hard water negatively impacts health and indeed, there’s some research that points to some mild benefits for some, other issues with hard water make it undesirable. But hard water can be softened and conditioned. And Chapman has the fix for that.
because heated water, like the water in a dishwasher, hot water heater or washing machine creates calcium carbonate solids. This is a problem on many levels. Calcium carbonate deposits that from heated hot water can make bathing and cleaning dishes and laundry unpleasant: In a shower or bath cause an unsightly and uncomfortable scum. Plus, you use a lot more soap trying to get a lather, which is difficult at best to create. When using your dishwasher, hard water is very noticeable since there is often left a white film or white spots on dishes, silverware and glassware. Hard water build-up can clog coffee-makers and ruin pots and pans.
Simply stated, hard water is defined by the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium found in it. The high mineral count is formed as water permeates through ground deposits of chalk and limestone, both of which are almost entirely composed of magnesium and calcium carbonates. You know the water is ‘hard,’ when after washing your hands, for example, there’s a residue left behind; soap often reacts with the calcium and forms, for lack of a more delicate word, scum. Soap and hard water don’t mix well, especially water that’s warm or hot 32
COOL LIVING I ChapmanHeating.com
When doing laundry, hard water may be responsible for graying white or light colored fabrics but it also can roughen fine fabrics and wear the fibers of cloth out quicker than softer water. There’s a lot of extra time and work involved in re-cleaning, when possible, laundry or dishes to remove stains, film and scum. And sinks and bathtubs too are left with a film which leads to frequent re-cleaning.
And if soap scum wasn’t bad enough, hard water can clog pores and for some, create skin conditions or cause rashes. And hard water does not favors for your hair, either.
HARD WATER IS COSTING YOU MONEY. In a hot water heater, coils, backs of toilets, and plumbing pipes, hard water leaves the solid calcium carbonate deposits, too and that can lead to build-up over time resulting in damage and likely, costly repairs and replacement costs.
And while hard water build-up in pipes restricts the flow of water, in a boiler, the calcium carbonate build-up restricts the flow of heat into water and that reduces heating efficiency. And in some cases, metal boiler and heater parts can overheat. Again, repair and/or replacement costs are possible. Hard water corrodes pipes.
Swimming pools do not escape the wrath of hard water, either. The water will appear milky. Following this laundry list of hard water crimes, you should know that there’s light at the end of the pipes. Indiana-based Puritan’s water conditioning systems soften water and also filter water removing impurities. You could spend money on a shower faucet filter head or water softeners you’re your dishwasher and washing machine, but with a Puritan water conditioning system, you’ll get the results of several devices in one system. Puritan filtration and softening systems correct myriad hard water problems, while helping to improve your water quality overall. And when water quality in your home is improved, the life of your plumbing is increased, your bathing routine is much better, your clothing is cleaner, your soap lasts longer, your dishes aren’t dingy, and most importantly of all, you’ll save money with a Puritan water conditioning system. Call Chapman today for more information.
DOWN THE SINK!
A brief history of the garbage disposal in the U.S. A garbage disposal unit or waste disposal unit is an electrically-powered device installed under a kitchen sink between the sink’s drain and the trap. The disposal unit shreds food waste into pieces small enough to pass through plumbing. Invented in 1927 by a Racine, Wisconsin-based architect, the patent for the first disposal unit was issued in 1935 and was dubbed the InSinkErator when it was first marketed in 1940. Though General Electric would claim it had first developed the garbage disposal in 1935, most sources credit inventor John W. Hammes as the creator. Regardless, garbage disposal units were originally a source of contention across the U.S. in the 1930s and 1940s given many municipalities prohibited food waste in sewage systems. Hammes shot back with a successful marketing campaign that saw many cities and towns lift those restrictions to allow for the disposal units, save some large cities, like New York, that worried that food waste could be a potential hazard to its sewage system. But following a near two-year study, New York City acquiesced and in 1997 rescinded its ban with other large cities following suit. By 2009, more than half of U.S. homes were using garbage disposals and truth be told, most folks can’t live without their garbage disposals! Not only do they conveniently dispose of food waste, but they help to reduce harmful food bacteria and make kitchen clean-up a little easier. But as with any other appliance, proper maintenance is a must. A garbage disposal will last many years with proper cleaning and maintenance. Should you have a question about your garbage disposal unit or are in need of maintenance or repair, Chapman Heating & Cooling is here to help! by Ellyn Santiago

WHEN PIPES LEAK 34
COOL LIVING I ChapmanHeating.com
Showers and sinks that leak even tiny amounts of water can waste gallons over time. If you notice yourself having to over tighten the faucet in order to stop the dripping, it isn’t working the way it should. Faucet and showerhead leaks are typically easy to detect and fix during a routine plumbing maintenance call. Normal use of faucets and showers can cause these issues over time, but it’s still good to solve them early if you’re interested in saving water and money. WATERLINE Waterline leaks are those that occur wherever water flows – in pipes behind walls, under the floorboards, and underground. If you notice a pipe leaking or mysterious water flowing from your wall or floorboards, that’s a sign of a problem. However, most line leaks won’t be that easy to spot. Detecting leaks in unseen pipes isn’t easy, and will require an experienced professional to properly identify. Leaks in pipes that aren’t easily visible may require the use of specialized equipment for detecting leaks. If a leak is found, the pipes will need to be uncovered or bypassed in order to be repaired. There may be symptoms of hidden line leaks that you can see (i.e. flooding in your yard), but many times the only indication that there’s a problem will come from higher water bills. It’s also a wise idea to to pay attention to your water pressure; a sudden or gradual change in water pressure can also be an indication that things aren’t flowing so well or that you have a leak. Because of the complex and insidious nature of waterline leaks, a professional plumber is the only person who should be trusted to diagnose and solve these problems. Repairing and replacing damaged pipes inside your walls and under the surface isn’t a do-it-yourself task, since you could end up making mistakes that will cost you a fortune. Always hire a professional.
T
he first sign that you may have a water leak is a bill that’s higher than normal. Water leaks can occur anywhere, and they may not always be easy to find. If you notice water flowing where it shouldn’t be or your water bills mysteriously rising, it may be time to call a plumber. The cause of a leak may be hard to determine, and fixing the issue may not be as simple as a patch job. Here are some common areas in your home where leaks may sprout and how you can help identify them. TOILET Toilets do a lot of work every day, and as a result they are one of the most common places you’ll find a leak. Something as simple as a toilet tank with a flapper that doesn’t close all the way can cost a small fortune over time, wasting thousands of gallons of water in as little as a month. Times are tough and money is tight, so any wasted water is too much. And if you’re someone whose home uses a well, that leaky toilet equals higher power bills.
Pay attention to what the water in your home is telling you. Keep an eye on your utility bills and water pressure, and keep your ears open for any strange noises. Be diligent when it comes to your plumbing, since water can cause major damage over time. The best way to stop leaks is to seal them before they happen. Annual plumbing maintenance is recommended so that problems can be solved before the first drip. For more information about plumbing leak detection, head to the Chapman website at chapmanheating.com.
Luckily, toilet leaks are easy to identify and are typically accompanied by the noise of running water. If you notice yourself having to jiggle the handle to stop your tank from filling, flush multiple times, or if you’re hearing running water when you shouldn’t, it’s time to get your toilet fixed before your monthly bills take a hit. SHOWERHEAD AND FAUCET When you turn your faucet off, the water should stop flowing, right? Well, sometimes water continues to drip out of the faucet even after you’re done using it. If it drips for a few moments, there may not be a problem. But if your faucet continues to leak long after you’ve closed the line, it’s time to fix it. 317-291-4909 I COOL LIVING

There is a good chance that installing a new air conditioning system will end up costing you less in the long run. You can decide whether you are going to repair your current unit or replace it. Here are some tips to help you figure out what the future of your air conditioner is. Cost Difference Between and AC Repair and AC Replacement The first thing that you are going to want to look into is what the difference in cost is

between having your current AC repaired or having a brand new one installed. If the cost of fixing your expensive home appliance is close to your quote for a new installation, the replacement option is a better choice. Age is Often the Determinant On the other hand, with a newer air conditioner that requires just a simple fix that is low in cost, you will find it more beneficial to just keep what you have and complete the
Repair vs Replace Quiz small repair. When it comes to an older air conditioner though, the improvement on energy efficiency alone can quickly offset the price paid for a new system. Keep this in mind when trying to choose between an AC repair or an AC replacement. The General Rule of Air Conditioner Efficiency The rule of thumb for trying to decide, based on the age, is if the system is around two years old, there is a good chance repairs will be beneficial. An air conditioner’s lifespan is around eight years. If yours is around that age, replacement is what you are looking for. When it comes to air conditioners that are about four years old, it is possible for the decision to go either way. Get Rid of Faulty Systems If your air conditioner has done nothing but give you problems since it was installed, it could save you future headaches by just junking your constantly failing air conditioning unit. This will save yourself more hassle than you know. Having a system that is reliable and efficient that also includes a yearly scheduled maintenance visit will prove an amazing choice that will continue functioning for years. Rely on Newer Technology The biggest advantage of a new AC unit is the strong possibility that the new model is energyefficient. It is not likely that the monthly savings on your utility bills will show the savings in the first month. In the course of a few years, that air conditioning unit can successfully pay for itself and begin to make you money. Energy Star Efficiency When choosing a new air conditioning unit, look for the seal from Energy Star. This model meets or exceeds guidelines that the Environmental Protection Agency sets for energy efficiency. This can all get confusing if you are not sure what it means. The program also mushroomed into a culinary training academy for residents with former resident ‘D,’ a real success story: ‘D’ had been on the streets for years before coming to Progress House. He entered the culinary program and today owns his own restaurant, ‘Sunny D’s’ in downtown Indianapolis. “Progress House keeps you driven,” Tadd says. “Support systems are the key,” says Tadd Whallon, Progress House director of development. Tadd, an active member of the recovery community since 2000, has been sober for more than 12 years. Progress House operates on three simple but important principles: community, responsibility and recovery. Progress House residents “quickly realize the days of hiding and suffering in silence are over so the days of embracing a lifelong solution can begin,” is the basis for establishing the sense of community for residents because each man must begin to take on House responsibilities and learn to rely on one another. Responsibility is the operative word given for many men at Progress House; addic-
tion has meant living a life of isolation and responsibility only to their addiction. “Many of our residents have learned how to accept the past and build for the future, one brick at a time, during their stay,” according to Progress House. Recovery is obviously key so at Progress House, residents are required to attend 12-Step model recovery meetings daily including Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous.
But it needs donations to survive. Chapman is a Platinum Donor for Progress House’s largest and most important fundraiser, Indiana Golden Gloves ‘Fight Night.’ Last year the fundraiser nearly sold out. In 2015, the even’ts third year, was moved to the Indianapolis State Fairgrounds.
In addition to the main house, where men can live for up to a year, Progress House developed its ‘Next Steps’ program to help find permanent housing and provide other support to help them maintain their sobriety. Progress House also partners with ‘Second Helpings,’ the community food initiative that has partnered with catering
Chapman also provides in-kind services for Progress House and over the years has “helped with a lot of other things.”
According to Tadd, the exciting and wildly successful fundraiser “would not be possible without Chapman.”
“We’re closely associated with Progress House because we know how important it is to this community,” Jeff says. 317-291-4909 I COOL LIVING

“SUMP PUMPS”
by Adeline Moore
THE FIGHT AGAINST FLOODED BASEMENTS It doesn’t take much water to cause thousands of dollars of damage. A moist basement can also lead to mold and mildew growth, bringing with it all its related health and breathing hazards.
A
war rages between the Earth and manmade structures each and every day. A barrage of weather-related damage from disasters like floods, play a pivotal role in threatening the American Dream of happy homeownership. But that dream can be protected. Early warning systems are an absolute must. According to the American Society of Home Inspectors, more than 60 percent of American homes suffer from below-ground wetness. But even more homeowners are likely to have to deal with a flooded basement at some point. It doesn’t take much water to cause thousands of dollars of damage. A moist basement can also lead to mold and mildew growth, bringing with it all its related health and breathing hazards. However, in many cases the problem isn’t with the basement itself, but how water is handled outside. Water that falls on the ground near the foundation can seep in through basement walls. The very foundation of our homes, generally believed to be the strongest and least vulnerable make in fact be the most. To combat this watery invasion from Mother Nature, a sump pump is utilized at the heart of a basement or crawl space as a self-sufficient waterproofing system. This electrically-powered device does the heavy-lifting to keep your basement dry. It pumps water out of your basement (or crawl space) after the water collects in a sump pit dug into the floor. Usually triggered by pressure-sensitive check valves, sump pumps will push water out through piping leading away from the home. It is always recommended to get a pump that has a battery backup, in case your problem also comes with no electricity. A pump with a battery backup can keep pumping water even when the lights go out. Along with a battery backup it is important to equip your sump pump with an alarm indicator. Chapman Heating Air Conditioning & Plumbing in Indianapolis has championed, and mastered, sump pump installations. These installations are fully equipped with not only back up battery systems but early warning alarm systems that let homeowners know when their homes are at risk and are placed at strategic locations to maximize home protection from water runoff that could lead to damages. Victory favors the prepared and when it comes to home preservation against the water element sump pumps are key.
