YOUR HOME IS COOL

t’s hot and humid in Florida, and it’s not unusual to walk into a home and still feel a little bit of the outdoor moisture in the air. Much like how you control the temperature with an air conditioning and heating system, homeowners should consider taking control of humidity levels by installing a dehumidifier. Using one has a laundry list of benefits that you may not have considered.
Stop Mold in its Tracks
Mold and mildew reside where it’s moist: shower curtains, windowsills, air conditioning ducts, and sinks. In homes where humidity is very high, mold can even form on furniture or in carpets. While it’s gross to look at, mold and mildew can also cause issues with breathing for those who suffer from allergies or asthma. A dehumidifier makes it more difficult for mold to thrive by cutting back the humidity it needs to flourish.
Improve Your Health
It isn’t just mold and mildew that thrive in a moist environment. Other allergens and

Dust-up the Dust Mites
These tiny critters are so small that you can’t even see them without a microscope. They live in your bed linen, curtains, carpets, floor mats, furniture, and pillows. They literally get nourishment from the moisture that gets trapped in random areas of the home, and from there they multiply. Dehumidifiers help to keep their numbers in check by keeping things dry.
relatively inexpensive way to improve air quality, bolster your health, and protect your possessions. Dehumidifiers come in a range of sizes from small one-room units to whole-home systems; the sizes are based on the system’s ability to remove moisture from the air. Regardless of what your needs are, there’s bound to be a system out there that’s perfect for you.
Protect Your Belongings
Certain electronics, books, clothes, paintings, posters, and even some foods can become damaged by moisture. The things you own will last longer if the humidity levels in your home are under control. Controlling excess moisture in your home brings benefits that expand beyond mold control. Dehumidification is an easy and energyair.com

A MESSAGE FROM
W
hen Energy Air was started by my brother-in-law in 1976, I joined up four years later and worked with a small staff doing everything from service calls to customer outreach. We had only one truck back then, and earned a few thousand dollars in revenue. It’s hard to believe that we now have a fleet of trucks at our disposal and employ hundreds of great people. It humbles me to think about, and I’m very thankful for the success Energy Air has seen over the last few decades. In large part we owe our growth to our loyal customers, who trust us to come into their homes and businesses to provide great service. It is only because of your choice to use Energy Air that we keep the lights on. For that, I send a most heartfelt thank you. I also know that this company would never be where it is today without our 6

A GROWING FAMILY
I
t all began with a workers’ strike at National Airlines that sent the future founder of Energy Air, Robert French, back into the workforce. His brotherin-law, Chuck Kulp was operating an air conditioning and heating company in Miami at the time, and Robert took on a job as a truck driver and installer, learning this new trade from the ground up. Taking a liking to it very quickly, it wasn’t long before Robert moved to Orlando with the thought of starting his own company. In 1976, Energy Air was born.
by Garrett Chilson
“With both of us involved, we could start looking for more work and more customers. When my brother-in-law had Energy Air to himself, he was doing it all. He had to run around doing pretty much everything,” says Chuck. “When I came here, we knew that we were going to join together as one company and, of course, try to grow it.”
With two men at the helm and a smallbut-smart staff of good people, Energy Air grew very quickly. Chuck immediately took over much of the sales, finding new clients to service. He and Robert split most of the other day-to-day operations, managing jobs and dispatching install technicians. When they were busy, both would head
It was a humble company with only a couple of employees, all run out of Robert’s garage. Like any small business, the day-to-day duties were shared by owner and employee alike—all of whom wore many hats. It wasn’t long before the company began to grow, expanding into its own warehouse in 1980. It was then that Chuck Kulp moved to rejoin his brother-in-law in a combined effort to grow a single successful company in the Orlando market.

various roles as early as high school, and two of the sons still work for the company in leadership roles to this day. “Between Robert and myself, my sons, and some good employees, we grew as the economy would let us,” Chuck says. “Pretty much we grew a little bit each year, it didn’t happen all at once.” Working within the confines of the upsand-downs of the economy, Energy Air continued on the path to success, expanding its service area and growing the business. In the mid 1990s, the company was only moving forward. While the two brothers (in-law) had succeeded in making Energy Air a standout name in the Orlando area, Robert made the decision to leave the company and move to be closer with his own family in South Carolina. At that time, Chuck took over as the president and sole owner.
out to jobs themselves, servicing what they sell versus doing system installations. Despite being owners, both Robert and Chuck had to take a hands-on approach in order to assure they put out a quality product and satisfied their customers. “A lot of times employees just think you start right at the top when you come in and start a business, but you really start by doing everything,” says Chuck. “At some point of course as we grew, we would have to move someone up to supervise while we looked for more work. But that’s the way we did it originally; we didn’t have a big hunk of money sitting out there where we could hire a bunch of employees to do all these things. We had to build our capital as we were going.”
When asked what he credits to the success of the company, Chuck immediately mentions his employees. He and Robert have always believed in a family-style approach to management, encouraging a close relationship with their team members, since their dedication is vital for the business to survive.
“We’re still very close … Robert didn’t have any other family working in the company and his kids were then getting into college and married, and they moved up to the South Carolina area,” says Chuck. “He and his wife wanted to be closer to their family, and that’s really the only reason he left, otherwise we’d probably still be working together today.”
As Energy Air grew, an extended family of staff grew along with it. For Chuck, his immediate family also became involved at a young age; his three sons started filling

When Chuck arrived, Energy Air had a handful of employees, a couple of trucks on the road, and was earning around $25 thousand a month in revenue. Through the hard work of everyone involved, things continued driving forward. By the end of the 80s, the company had grown exponentially and moved into a larger facility. There was now a small fleet of Energy Air trucks on the road, and a growing workforce of dedicated people to keep opertions running smoothly.

living at the once-small air conditioning and heating company. But for the Kulp family, the success of Energy Air has always been credited to good employees. In 2010, the company was awarded “Best Place to Work” by the Orlando Business Journal, and they have some workers on staff who have been with them for decades. “We have created an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), and the employees pay nothing for this ownership. We’re happy about that in the end, Energy Air will be owned and operated by the very people who service customers directly each and every day,” says Chuck.
miere HVAC sales and installation company, servicing a large commercial and residential market. But like most in the trade, the housing crash of 2008 was changed their business. Things started to slow down and Energy Air was forced to lay-off employees in an effort to adjust their financial model. “Everyone went backwards, especially in the residential market,” Chuck says. “We were somewhere up in the $15 million range in residential. We ended up going back to about $3 million.”
another way, he and the rest of the team at Energy Air stay busy. At the age of 74, Chuck dodges the question of retirement, but concedes that Energy Air will go on long after he steps down. With two of his sons still working as department heads and four grandchildren on staff filling various roles, three generations of the Kulp family now make their
Chuck and his sons agreed to the sale, citing a desire to keep Energy Air prosperous and independent long after the family retires. With most of their lives spent working for the company, the idea of selling it to a larger entity someday didn’t sit right with the Kulp’s. Further, much of their staff had dedicated their lives to Energy Air—it seemed only right that they own it. “A lot of people have spent time here, and they don’t spend time here if they’re not working,” says Chuck. “We do have employees here that are capable of doing what we do. We have a good team here.”
From then on, Energy Air shifted their primary focus to commercial air conditioning and heating installations. To this day, commercial clientele make up about 80% of their revenue. Chuck says the change came naturally—all the company did was react in response to the economy. “We didn’t change our model, it changed us,” says Chuck. “The economy changed us and we simply went with the flow, you might say.” With their operations becoming more efficient after the economic downturn, Energy Air is on the path to a full recovery. They have seen the return of much of their residential business, and the commercial wing continues to thrive. Chuck says the company has a healthy backlog of job demands that put them at maximum resource capacity. To put it energyair.com

Keep Your Air Conditioner Humming
W
hether basking in the warm summer sun or enjoying the crisp cool winter air, Florida residents can maximize their cooling and heating system with a simple routine of regular maintenance. With a small amount of foresight, knowledge and time, home and business owners can enjoy clean and efficient air conditioning and heating throughout the year. One of the easiest and least expensive maintenance tasks is simply to frequently clean or replace air filters between visits from a professional. Not only does this improve the quality of the air within the home, it also extends the efficiency and lifespan of your air conditioning system. Energy Air Technician, Patrick Roberts, explains, “When we do a maintenance inspection, we’ll clean the drain lines, check the Freon levels, and change the filter, but keeping those filters clean between visits can make a big difference in air quality and efficiency.” Preventing problems before they arise is ideal, and smart home and business owners rely on preventative maintenance plans to keep their systems working at peak efficiency and to ensure that should any problems arise, they are dealt with swiftly.
“If you are part of a yearly maintenance program, not only do you get us out annually to maintain your system during the year, but should we have to come out at any other time during the year you get a 10% discount on parts and labor every time we come out, and you also get reduced trip charges and priority service,” Patrick says. “Priority service is so important, because on the first hot day of the season or the first cold day, we get a lot of calls. We have aroundthe-clock service, and we’ll have a huge spike over a weekend. What priority service means for customers signed up with maintenance agreements, is that they go to the top of the list. If you call us and your unit is down, and you are already on a plan, you are our priority.” Of course, maintaining your system is in your best interest, but it also might be a requirement of your equipment’s warranty. Most manufacturers require annual maintenance and records to provide warranty coverage, and some require proof of regular preventative maintenance plans and services. “Not following the maintenance schedule might be enough to void some warranties, “says Patrick. “We recommend maintenance in the spring to get ready for the summer, and again in the fall to prepare for winter. It’s important to maintain the heating system, too.”

Benefiting the Florida Hospital Diabetes Institute
by Jacqueline Cross
W
ith its mission statement listed as ‘preventing diabetes and its complications through a coordinated multi-disciplinary approach to health promotion, patient education, professional training, treatment and research,’ it seems clear that the Florida Hospital Diabetes Institute takes a comprehensive approach towards diabetes care. The organization, which has its main campus centered in Orlando, conducts everything from drug trials to direct patient treatment and everything in between.
Being a disease of multiple forms that affects people from all walks of life, the effort to cure and prevent diabetes occurs on many fronts. While research and direct care is an important part of the battle, the Florida Hospital Diabetes Institute also focuses on educating the public about dietary choices and the science related to the disease. Paul Finelli, who works to raise money for the Diabetes Institute through the associated Florida Hospital Foundation, says the Institute’s approach to diabetes care includes “everything.”
Founded in 1993, the Diabetes Institute is ranked high amongst the nation’s top organizations for the research and treatment of the disease, which affects the lives of more than 29 million people nationwide. Shockingly, that number is expected only to rise and, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, there are likely upwards of 8 million individuals living with undiagnosed diabetes who are receiving no treatment for their condition.
“The Institute has a clinical care team; we have a complete education program, staffed with dieticians, certified diabetes educators and nurses, who train individuals after a diagnoses of diabetes how to test their blood sugar, how to use their meters, how to inject themselves with insulin,” says Finelli. “They also do individualized meal planning with folks. Your diet is such a major component of managing your diabetes
14 COOL COMFORT

effectively, so our dieticians will do individual meal plans.” Proper diet is the center state for living with diabetes. As such, the Institute puts a lot of focus on education and outreach related to nutrition, helping to ensure that every person who walks through their doors has the proper information they need to make better choices. In an effort to take a unique approach to education, the Institute has a mock supermarket set up, loaded with a variety of food products, healthy ones and those that are deceptively labeled. “We can be a little more hands-on when we work with individuals. It’s not enough simply to say to them ‘When you go to the grocery store, this is what you need to look for?’ Now we can show them. … We give them tasks: ‘Go over to this shelf and tell me what you think this box is telling you,’” says Finelli. “We also have a fulldemonstration kitchen, where we’re doing
demonstration cooking classes with local chefs, and show people how they can enjoy the foods they’ve always enjoyed, just prepare them in more of a healthy way.” This is all in addition to a large research component that looks for answers and new treatments. And unlike many in the healthcare field, Florida Hospital is a taxexempt non-profit that works for the community benefit. As a result, they are responsible for raising their own funds, most of which come through the generous contributions of individual and corporate donors. Two such donors are Dianne and Chuck Kulp, the owners of Energy Air in Orlando. Dianne lives with type-2 diabetes and has personally benefitted from the Florida Hospital Diabetes Institute. She served as a board member with the foundation, working to organize fundraising events and seek out new donors. “As a Foundation board member, Dianne was responsible for advocating for the diabetes institute in the community. She helped with our fundraising objectives and she made connections for us with individuals in the community who may be interested in learning more about the Diabetes Institute,” says Finelli.
‘CRUISING’
to Cure Diabetes by Clair Cameron
E
nergy Air teamed up with Florida Hospital Diabetes Foundation to host the Cruise for a Cause, a fundraising motorcycle and car cruise and show, the proceeds of which go to benefit diabetes research and treatment. More than 100 participants sign up annually for the event, which featured the coolest cars and motorcycles in the Orlando area. With engines rumbling at the starting line, raffle drives took place for cool prizes such as spa gift certificates, wine, free dry cleaning, restaurant gift cards, automotive tools, golf course admission, and Harley Davidson gifts and apparel. There were also door prizes and free t-shirts given away to all who registered. The Florida Hospital Diabetes Institute also has staff on site to do screening for diabetes for any participant who wants to be checked. Each year there are a few people who have learned they may be diabetic, giving them the opportunity to start care and help prevent their disease from getting out of control. After the cruise, participants would line their cars and bikes up for a show open to the public while they enjoy an after party that featured live music, mouth-watering BBQ, games to play, and even more raffle prizes to give away.
Without generous contributions from the community, the Florida Hospital Foundation would not be able to offer its full range of services that positively impact the lives of so many. If you are interested in learning more about diabetes, the Institute, or becoming a donor yourself, please visit the Florida Hospital Diabetes Institute’s website at floridahospitaldiabetes.com.
Over the course of its four-year history, the Cruise raised approximately $60,000 in charitable funds for the Florida Diabetes Institute. All of the money raised will stay right here in Central Florida, helping people with no insurance or not enough insurance to cover the cost of the vital classes available at the Institute.

AIR CONDTIONER: repair or replace?
T
he air conditioning unit outside of your home works hard day in and day out to keep your family cool. Just like every other bit of technology in your life your air conditioner accumulates wear and tear every day from casual use. Find the best AC repair Orlando has to offer and make some repairs on your AC unit this year. There is a good chance that installing a new air conditioning system
will end up costing you less in the long run. You can decide whether you are going to repair your current unit or replace it. Here are some tips to help you figure out what the future of your air conditioner is.
Cost Difference Between AC Repair and AC Replacement
The first thing that you are going to want to look into is what the difference in cost is between having your current AC repaired or having a brand new one installed. If the cost of fixing your expensive home appliance is close to your quote for a new installation, the replacement option is a better choice.
Age is Often the Determinant
On the other hand, with a newer air conditioner that requires just a
18 COOL COMFORT
407-886-3729
simple fix that is low in cost, you will find it more beneficial to just keep what you have and complete the small repair. When it comes to an older air conditioner though, the improvement on energy efficiency alone can quickly offset the price paid for a new system. Keep this in mind when trying to choose between an AC repair or an AC replacement.
The General Rule of Air Conditioner Efficiency
The rule of thumb for trying to decide, based on the age, is if the system is around 2 years old, there is a good chance repairs will be beneficial. An air conditioner’s lifespan is around 8 years. If yours is around that age, replacement is what you are looking for. When it comes to air conditioners that are about four years old, it is possible for the decision to go either way.
Get Rid of Faulty Systems
If your air conditioner has done nothing but give you problems since it was installed, it could save you future headaches by just junking your constantly failing air conditioning unit. This will save you more
Energy Air’s Repair vs Replace Quiz hassle than you know. Having a system that is reliable and efficient that also includes a yearly scheduled maintenance visit will prove an amazing choice that will continue functioning for years.
Rely on Newer Technology
The biggest advantage of a new AC unit is the strong possibility that the new model is energy-efficient. It is not likely that the monthly savings on your utility bills will show the savings in the first month. In the course of a few years, that air conditioning unit can successfully pay for itself and begin to make you money.
Energy Star Efficiency
When choosing a new air conditioning unit, look for the seal from Energy Star. This model meets or exceeds guidelines that the Environmental Protection Agency sets for energy efficiency. This can all get confusing if you are not sure what it means. Call Energy Air Conditioning for your AC repair in Orlando. We will provide a free quote for problems stemming from your air conditioner. Having the ability to choose between AC replacement and AC repair leaves many opportunities to save money. You can expect outstanding customer service that will exceed your expectations when you choose Energy Air. We will send our highly qualified technician to your home to inspect the issues you are having with your air conditioning unit.

Through a variety of sizes and capabilities of controlling the air temperature in individual zones or rooms in the building, they offer both economic and environmental advantages. HVAC companies like Energy Air are installing them in multi-family housing, renovations of older single-family homes, as well as businesses’ server rooms, waiting rooms and office spaces. They also have a money and energy savings advantage when some areas of an office space are used infrequently or not at all (such as a build-out waiting for occupancy), by only conditioning the space that is occupied. Duct-free systems, as the name implies, have no duct work and consist of an outdoor condenser and an indoor air-handling unit. These are linked together with tubing that houses the power cable, refrigerant tubing, and a drain tube for condensation. In many
ways, they operate in a manner quite similar to a standard air conditioning system. Yolanda Pizarro, Account Manager of Energy Air, noted that the main advantages of duct-free systems are ease of installation, cost savings, energy savings and flexibility in locating the system for cosmetic concerns and sound control as well as logistical applications. “The benefits are often overlooked by customers, but we like to point out that duct-free systems can be installed in places where conventionally-ducted systems simply can’t go. Options for interior design include ceiling and wall mounted units, drop ceiling applications and even a picture gallery unit that allows the owner to customize the look of the space,” she said. “Floor-standing models are also available. Most indoor units have profiles of about eight to eleven inches deep
and have a range of aesthetically refined designs suitable for any home or office. All models offer a remote control to easily make adjustments to the system’s air flow pattern or temperature and on and off when it’s positioned high on a wall or suspended from a ceiling.” Duct-free systems can also help to keep your home safer because there is only a small hole for the tubing to pass
“The cost savings can be significant in terms of installation and energy use.” through the wall. Window-mounted and through-the-wall room air-conditioners, unfortunately, can provide an easy entrance for intruders. “For many of our customers, the unique advantages of this type of system are important. Our installers are highly trained, they attend hands-on training as well as up-to-date factory training and testing,” Yolanda continued. “I would caution against using a company whose technicians are not proficient in this type of installation, as each unit must be correctly sized and placed. An error here could result in wasted energy, improper temperature or humidity control, and greater long-term operational expenses.” Chuck Kulp, President of Energy Air, encourages home and business owners replacing existing systems, building new or remodeling to consider duct-free systems. “The cost savings can be significant in terms of installation and energy use without compromising the comfort level of the rooms or occupants. Our professional technicians are continuously trained to help customers determine the best options for cooling and heating your home or business.” energyair.com

ummer is filled with family picnics and barbecues, but you need to make sure that those burgers and pasta salads aren’t served with a side of bacteria. Celebrity Chef Cat Cora is an expert at overcoming the complexities of cooking with exotic ingredients, including ostrich, oysters and venison; but even working with everyday staples, like chicken, beef, eggs and fresh vegetables, can present cooking challenges. These foods can carry common bacteria, such as E. coli, Salmonella and Staph — all of which can thrive throughout the cleanest kitchen. To help spread awareness about better kitchen practices, Chef Cora partnered with Ultra Palmolive® Antibacterial Dish Liquid, offering tips and providing simple solutions to help prevent cross-contamination in your kitchen. Research shows that bacteria can easily spread to kitchen surfaces while preparing

even the most simple of meals. Studies have found that: Bacteria on a cutting board can double after ten minutes of use, whether cutting raw meat or vegetables. n
Ten percent of bacteria on a cutting board can transfer to lettuce during chopping. n
E. coli that remains on washed and dried dishes can survive up to three days. n
“Like all moms, I want to provide the best for my family while creating memor able meals at home,” said Cora. “Cleaning throughout the cooking process gives me peace of mind that I’m doing all I can for my family.” For a perfect barbecue, try Cat Cora’s new summer recipes, and follow her simple food preparation tips, by visiting www.palmolive.com.

Simple cooking tips to create a delicious barbecue
Grilled Vegetables and Ginger Citrus Mayonnaise Serves 6 to 8 2 each crookneck or summer squash, baby zucchini, large whole carrots, large fennel or 3 medium fennel bulb 5 to 6 shallots Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper Extra virgin olive oil
Ginger Citrus Mayonnaise
3 juicy oranges, grapefruits, Meyer lemons, mineolas, tangerines, mandarins, blood oranges, etc., cut in half (6 halves total) 3 tablespoons (or more for desired consistency) store bought preferred mayonnaise Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
Preheat grill for vegetables. To make the mayonnaise, squeeze all the juice out from 5 of the 6 citrus halves into a saucepan and bring to a boil over high heat. When juice begins to boil, lower heat to medium-high and reduce juice until thick and syrupy, being careful not to let it burn. Remove from heat, pour into a bowl, and allow to cool slightly. (At this point you can grill the vegetables). Whisk in mayonnaise, ginger, and cayenne pepper until smooth. Squeeze in juice from last remaining citrus half, and season to taste with salt and pepper. Cut all veggies in half lengthwise, rub all sides sparingly with olive oil, and sprinkle with salt and black pepper. Grill, cut side down first, for 4 to 6 minutes if small, 5 to 8 minutes if large pieces. Flip so skin side is down, and grill at an additional 1 to 2 minutes, until all veggies are firm but easily sliced with a knife. Serve on platter alongside bowl of ginger citrus mayonnaise or drizzled on top of vegetables.
Greek Burger Sliders with Avocado Tzatziki Stir together all avocado tzatziki ingrediServes 4 1 pound lean ground beef ents (see recipe) and chill in fridge at least 1/3 cup Kalamata olives, chopped one hour or longer. 3 tablespoons crumbled feta 1 teaspoon dried dill 3 tablespoons breadcrumbs 2 tablespoons finely chopped yellow onion 1 tablespoon chopped scallions Salt and freshly ground black pepper 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1 teaspoon fresh oregano, chopped (or 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano) 4 brioche rolls, split and toasted 4 lettuce leaves, washed and dried 4 tomato slices 4 cucumber slices (optional) 4 thin slices red onion (optional)
Cat Cora’s Tips
With your hands or a wooden spoon, mix ground beef, olives, feta, dill, breadcrumbs, onion, scallions, salt, pepper, garlic and oregano until all ingredients are evenly distributed. Shape the meat mixture into four 1/2-inch-thick patties. Grill over medium-hot coals or pan grill over medium heat for 5 minutes per side. The burgers should no longer be pink in the center. To serve, place each burger on a roll, spoon on a little tzatziki, and top with lettuce, tomato, cucumber, and onion slices to your taste.
During the summer, and throughout the year, use Cat Cora’s simple tips to reduce cross-contamination in your kitchen: • Keep mayonnaise-based foods, fresh meat and seafood at 40°F or freeze it. Bacteria may grow more quickly when items are stored at the wrong temperature. • Thaw frozen meat and seafood in the refrigerator on a paper towel-lined plate, not on the countertop. • Use a glass cutting board when slicing raw meats and vege tables. The surfaces of plastic and wood cutting boards can be cut by knives during food preparation, and bacteria may hide in these porous areas. • Clean as you go, washing prep tools and the sink after each use with a dish liquid such as Ultra Palmolive® Antibacterial Dish Liquid to help kill bacteria such as E. coli, Salmonella and Staph when used as directed.
Avocado Tzatziki
Makes 2 1/2 cups 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil 1 teaspoon minced garlic (about 1 large clove) 1 teaspoon kosher salt 2 cups plain nonfat Greek yogurt 1 cup peeled, seeded and grated cucumber (about 1 medium cucumber) 1 whole peeled avocado, diced small Add lemon juice, olive oil, garlic and salt to the yogurt. Add grated cucumber, diced avocado and mix well. Chill for at least one hour.

AFTER A SEVERE STORM take precautions before starting heating & cooling equipment
by Jacqueline Cross
Homeowners should not be too eager to get things back to normal after a storm, because improper maintenance and preparation can cause problems years later.
24 COOL COMFORT
A
fter a severe thunderstorm, tornado or hurricane – natural events that frequent Central Florida – homeowners need to take several precautions before attempting to salvage or restart heating and cooling equipment. “It’s important to remember not to immediately restart heating and cooling equipment after a severe storm because it can be dangerous and could cause further damage,” said Don Shehane, Residential Service Manager at Energy Air. “The equipment may be severely damaged, its wiring may be damaged or it may have debris lodged in it. These are some of the many reasons why it’s best to have a qualified service technician inspect your heating and cooling equipment after a severe storm.”
407-886-3729
To ensure your safety and prevent further damage to equipment, take the following steps after a storm: If the storm caused flooding, don’t start equipment until you are certain there is no water inside any components. If you’re not sure, don’t start it.
Have a reputable electrician or a technician from the power company
or city inspect your home’s internal and external wiring to make sure they’re dry and safe before you turn on any electrical equipment.
If the power company gives you approval to turn on the electricity in
your home, but you think you may have
a problem with your heating or cooling equipment, have the service company disconnect the equipment from the electrical source, and have it properly serviced first.
If there was flooding, open equipment and get some air circulating inside. This will speed up the drying process.
After a storm, use only reputable service companies to help you get your air conditioner and heater up and running again. “Unscrupulous companies can descend on disaster areas,” Don says. “Be careful. If necessary, go without service a little longer to make sure you get real value for your money.” energyair.com

Don’t Get Caught Sweating with Your Thermostat Down
STAY COOL
Winter gets COLD, but Summer is HOT, HOT, HOT! When it’s time to think about turning off the heat and crankin’ down the AC there are things you should do to make your system ready to take on Florida’s brutal heat. by Jacqueline Cross
F
olks up north know how to “winterize” their homes. However, here in the sunny south, we sometimes forget that it’s just as important to “summerize” our homes. Between pools and air conditioning, summer produces the highest demand of the year for energy in Florida. Making sure your air conditioning system is operating at its most efficient level is imperative if you do not want to see those electric bills skyrocket like the Space Shuttle blasting off from Cape Canaveral!
We suggest testing your system while it’s still cool. If you have a
problem, you can address it before things heat up. Turn your unit on, and check the air temperature at your return and one of your supply ducts. You should measure an 18-degree difference from your supply to your return. This is easily measured with a simple thermometer. Hold the thermometer as close as possible to the supply and then return to 26 COOL COMFORT
ensure the most accurate reading. If the difference is at least 18 degrees, you’re good to go; if not, you might have a problem. That’s probably a good time to call a professional!
Check your filter. Clean it if it is the type that can be cleaned; otherwise, replace it.
Check the batteries in your thermo-
stat, if applicable. By the way, this is also a good time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors (not AC related, I just threw that one in for free). Next, take a walk outside and look at your condenser. If it’s excessively dirty or there is mold on it, wash it off. Also, make sure that, if you have shrubs surrounding the condenser, that air flow is not inhibited. If they are, grab a trimmer and clip away!
Clean your drain line. It is usually
near your outside unit, is about 6 inches
407-886-3729
tall, and looks like an upside down hook. To clean the line, attach a Shop-Vac hose to the end of the plastic pipe and turn on the Shop-Vac to vacuum out all of the dirty water that’s been sitting in the line for months. You can get more aggressive by removing the panel at your air handler and first pouring a cup of vinegar, then a gallon or two of hot water, into your drain pan, and then repeating the Shop-Vac step.
Make sure you turn the electricity off to the unit before removing the panel! Not doing so could create a whole new batch of problems that would require the summoning of medical professionals as well as AC professionals!
Now, if you’re not quite that ambitious, but you want to be ready when things heat up, just call Energy Air to come out and service your unit for you. We’ll clean it, inspect it, and make sure everything is working as it should be.

UNDERSTANDING
WARRANTIES Y ou may have an existing warranty on your air conditioning system. When you purchased your new air conditioning system it came with a manufacturer’s warranty. You should have received a copy of this warranty from the manufacturer. The warranty paperwork contains the manufacturer’s terms and conditions for your warranty. If you cannot find your paperwork, please do not hesitate to call our customer service department and they will be happy to assist you. Manufacturers are beginning to enforce with greater regularity the terms and conditions within your paperwork. These changes may affect you. Most manufacturers allow you to transfer warranties to the new owner upon the sale of your property for a small fee and within 30 days of the closing. Manufacturers are now requiring the use of OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts. At the moment there are thousands of possible OEM parts for any of the multiple manufacturers, which makes using and obtaining OEM parts a difficult situation. The effect is that we will no longer be able to use generic stock parts. Although these changes are difficult, we make it our priority to bring you comfort as quickly as possible. Manufacturers only cover work performed during normal business hours. Manufacturers now require yearly maintenance by an authorized dealer/servicer in order to keep a warranty in good standing. As a valued customer, we ask that if you are not currently having maintenance done on your equipment at least once a year that you contact us or an authorized dealer/servicer in your area as soon as possible. Energy Air now has three maintenance contracts that can be purchased to fulfill the requirement to keep a warranty in effect. See the inside back cover for all the details on each maintenance contract. Again, thank you for choosing Energy Air. We are honored to serve you. Please call our Customer Service Department if you have any questions or if you need to schedule maintenance. We have several maintenance plans and our customer service representatives would be happy to explain them to you and help you choose which plan best fits your needs.

Things to Look for in a Home Comfort System When it’s time to replace your home comfort system, it’s important to consider what a newer system can offer. Here are seven items to consider when purchasing an HVAC system:
RELIABILITY
1
Chances are, your heating and cooling system is the most expensive equipment you will purchase for your home. That’s why it’s important to choose proven products from a reputable manufacturer.
EFFICIENCY
2
A new ENERGY STAR®-labeled system, when properly sized and installed, can save you up to 30% on your annual heating and cooling costs. *Plus, it may qualify you for utility rebates** in certain regions.
3 CONSISTENT TEMPERATURES 4
Air conditioners can produce sounds as high as 80 decibels. Look for technologies and features that help keep operating sound at a comfortable level.
5 PROPER AIRFLOW 6
To maintain proper moisture levels in your home, choose a thermostat that controls both temperature and humidity.
QUIET OPERATION
BALANCED HUMIDITY
HEALTHY AIR
7
With a typical furnace or single-speed air conditioner, indoor temperature can vary as much as seven degrees from the thermostat setting. A properly installed programmable thermostat gives you the assurance of precise temperature control*.
A typical furnace motor runs at one speed and circulates a constant volume of air, so it responds to changing comfort demands by repeatedly cycling on and off. This frequent cycling increases air stratification and stagnation. For optimal air circulation, choose a variable speed model. One of the best ways to combat indoor pollution is to attach an air cleaner to your furnace or air handler. That way, you can have peace of mind knowing your system is working to capture small contaminants in every room of your home. * Source: www.energystar.gov
** Check with your local utility about rebates in your area.
