Estes Journey
a Humble
Beginning
by Garrett Chilson
D
uring his time in the military, Estes Heating and Air Conditioning founder, N.B. (Nap) Estes, traveled a lot, picking up various trades and attending multiple colleges as he figured out what he wanted to do with his life once his time in the service was over. During his travels, he developed a love for mechanical engineering, especially when it came to air conditioning and heating technology. Following his passion, he founded Estes in 1949.
By the late 1950s and into the 1960s, air conditioning was becoming more prevalent, with the demand for central air increasing rapidly. Nap decided to move away from new construction and focus on residential repairs and installations in order to meet the new market trend. Additionally, multifamily housing in Atlanta was taking off, and Estes began to offer Air Conditioning and Heating services to apartment and commercial buildings, new and old.
When it began, Estes was small and humble, with the company operating entirely out of Nap’s home in Mountain View, Ga. During its first years, Estes focused on residential customers, providing installation of central heating systems and replacing old floor furnaces for folks in South Atlanta. At the time, the company was primarily focused on installations, with repair services only being offered on the systems they sold.
By the mid 1960s, the company had grown dramatically, with over 40 employees on the payroll and a brand new location to call its own. They were now one of the most respected air conditioning and heating companies in Atlanta and, having had the foresight to change their business model to focus on direct customer service, the future was looking bright for the once-small company. Around this time, Nap’s son, Tommy, also began working for Estes at a young age, taking an interest in the family business.
But Estes grew quickly, moving into a new addition behind Nap’s home, which housed around 10 employees. They were always busy working with local new construction companies, installing heating systems in brand new houses. Because of Nap’s growing reputation in the community as a 'straight shooter', most of these deals were conducted with a simple conversation and a handshake. 8

air conditioning and heating systems for his dad. When he graduated from West Georgia College in 1971, Tommy went to work for Estes Heating and Air Conditioning on a full-time basis, planning to someday take over the business operations. Over the next decade, the company grew very quickly, doubling its volume of work, hiring a dozen new employees, and solidifying a residential and commercial customer base. With more homes now equipped with central air conditioning than ever before, Estes was always busy with regular maintenance. In order to help mitigate the cost for the consumers and to continuously meet demand, they were one of the pioneers of implementing what became known as a Maintenance Agreement. Presently, Maintenance Agreements are used by

heating and air conditioning contractors across the country, and they are still a major part of Estes’ business plan. In 1986 when Nap Estes stepped down to retire, the oneman company started out of his house had grown exponentially, won numerous awards, and was going strong. His son Tommy took over as president, with the goal of continuing to grow the family business. Since then, Estes has expanded out of heating and air conditioning, tripling in size as they moved towards becoming a full-service contractor that also offers plumbing and electrical services. “That’s the continuing trend for the industry, and that’s where I see our growth coming from in the future,” says

Tommy. “The goal is to serve customers better by serving all of their needs, not just heating and air conditioning. That’s why we now call ourselves Estes Services.” In 1999 when Nap passed away, he missed out on seeing his company move to its large 27,000 square-foot facility. However, he did get to see the groundwork being laid for the business he founded to stay in the family. Despite numerous offers to have their company purchased, neither Nap nor Tommy ever considered selling. In fact, Tommy’s son Brian had begun working for the company as well, moving up the ranks and preparing to someday be the third generation of Estes to run the business.

Journey
“We are blessed to have a young, aggressive and experienced management team in place, led by Brian and our General Manager, John Waldorf,” Tommy says.
Presently, Estes Services has over 130 employees and 80 trucks on the road. They have programs in place to provide lifelong careers for their employees, and Brian is now serving as the company’s Vice President. Estes has set itself up for a long future, one that Tommy believes will see even further expansion.
“We don’t plan to stop growing,” says Tommy. “We have the foresight to look at the future and find the best way to serve the needs of our clients better than ever. In this business, you have to stay ahead of the curve.” 10

Why Why
Why
Get a Second Opinion? by Clair Cameron
I
magine taking your car in for a simple tune-up and having a mechanic tell you that only a new engine can solve your problem. You’d probably be immediately skeptical; after all, a brand new engine is going to cost you a lot more than an oil change, and the mechanic stands to make more money. If you’re wise, at that point you’ll turn around and get your car looked at by someone else before you do anything. Maybe the mechanic isn’t lying, but it’s always good to double check. Unfortunately, unscrupulous characters are everywhere, trying to make an extra buck by selling their customers something they don’t need. From salesmen to mechanics and even air conditioning contractors, it’s good to be cautious. Seeking a second opinion is always the right idea whenever you’re facing a large repair bill. “On more than one occasion, I’ve had customers call us seeking a second opinion because some other air conditioning company told them they needed a whole new system,” says Glyn Strickland, the Residential Service Manager at Estes Services. “We’d head out to look at their system for them, and sure enough all they need is a small repair. It happens more often than you think.” When it comes to air conditioning services, high pressure selling often works. When it’s super hot outside, all a person wants is their A/C back on. Secondly, when a nice-looking professional in a uniform says something, a lot of people take it as fact. But regardless of how much you’re made to sweat, it’s recommended that you remove yourself from the situation and take some time before making a major decision. “Your mother probably always told you to be cautious of strangers, and she’s right,” says

Glyn Strickland. “If our customers want to seek a second opinion about the work we do, I’m not offended. Seeking a second opinion about any major repair is a smart idea. Sadly, there are a lot of bad contractors out there who will do anything to make money.” As a consumer, it’s your job to take all the necessary steps to protect yourself. For starters, make sure you’re only doing business with a company who is licensed. Second, spend a little time researching different contractors; ask your friends who they’ve used, and search for reviews online. Not getting ripped off starts by making sure any organization you do business with is a reputable one. When you call a different contractor to get a second opinion, give them the details of the first company’s diagnosis so they know exactly what to look for. When it comes to providing customers a second opinion, many contractors will offer their expertise free of charge. So, there’s absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t get all of the facts before you open your wallet; a good company will support your decision to protect yourself.
“Truly the best. We’ve been in Atlanta for almost 30 years and have used numerous HVAC companies, some good, some not so good. We are completely thrilled with the service we’ve received from Estes.” - Bill E.
TV News Sting In 2012, CBS
Atlanta News hosted a segment called Investigates that focused on local heating and air conditioning companies. CBS set up a sting featuring a heating and air conditioning system that worked perfectly, and called in various service contractors to come in and take a look at it. Many of the companies who were investigated recommended unnecessary repairs, ranging in cost from a few hundred dollars to over a thousand dollars. Some of the companies were accused of damaging equipment intentionally and even threatening customers for making official complaints. Of all the companies called to the undercover investigation, only Estes Services passed the test. They properly checked out the system as part of their basic service call fee and made no bogus service recommendations whatsoever. For more information on this report, visit cbs46.com

Carrier, the world’s leader in hightechnology heating, air-conditioning and refrigeration solutions, is a part of UTC Building & Industrial Systems, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).
This lifetime achievement recognition is presented annually to select industry-leading contractors nominated by distributors and chosen by Carrier management. Nominees must be FADs and have a minimum of 20 years associated with Carrier as their primary brand. “The Carrier Dealer Hall of Fame was created to recognize and honor dealers who demonstrate enthusiasm, loyalty and courage in their work and who embody the same leadership philosophy as Willis Carrier, the founder of our company and the inventor of modern air conditioning,” said Chris Nelson, president, residential and commercial systems, Carrier. “Tommy Estes exemplifies compassion and commitment to his employees, his community, his customers and to Carrier. It is our honor to present him with this recognition.” Other noted qualities among recipients are vision to seize opportunity, a focus on continuous improvement, and personal and professional integrity. Although thousands of dealers across the country represent Carrier brand products, fewer than 1,500 surpass the high standards defined by the company to qualify as a FAD. Among those, Estes is one of only three dealers to be inducted into the Hall of Fame this year. The other two inductees are Mario Taylor of Taylor Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Inc. in St. Augustine, Fla.; and the late James Lane of James Lane Air Conditioning & Plumbing Co. in Wichita Falls, Texas. 14

Hall of Fa Estes’ father, N.B. “Nap” Estes, founded the company in 1949, and it has been affiliated with Carrier ever since. When Tommy Estes joined the company full time in 1971, Estes Heating & Air Conditioning was already one of Atlanta’s leading heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) companies and Carrier dealerships. However, Estes had the foresight to recognize the changing competitive market, and he persuaded his father to allow him to manage a small residential department within the company. He introduced maintenance agreements to Atlanta long before they were popular, thus positioning the company for solid growth even through challenging economic times. He has since expanded the business into home-performance contracting, plumbing, electrical, commercial retrofit, service and replacement, and continues to be one of Carrier’s top FADs. Over the years, Estes has donated to many charities, including United Way Worldwide, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, the Hudson Foundation, and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Estes and his family also provide Christmas gifts for the children at the Carrie Steele-Pitts Home.

Homeowners often have a perception that their home will act as an insulator against the outside elements, and homes do protect from many outside intruders, but not all. Homes provide a certain level of comfort and safety for the construction environment in which they are built. But, the fact is that hot or cold air infiltrates, along with pollens, spores and dirt from outside. These intrusions can adversely affect the health of a household environment, and the occupants. With Georgia experiencing a greater number of colder winters; longer, hotter summers and more tumultuous storms in recent years, modifying a home’s R-value may be one of the most important investments you can make. Insulated attic, wall outlets, sidewalls, floors, and all areas that allow air to move through a home, can change the way you live and the health of those inside.

R-Value
“R” stands for 'resistance to heat flow'. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating power and all insulation is identified and labeled by R-value. The amount of insulation recommend in a home varies depending on: Geographic Location – Higher R-value of insulation becomes more necessary to provide comfort if you live in climates with extreme conditions. As weather patterns shift, R-value becomes more critical. Age of Home – For homes that are more than 10 years old, insulation retrofits may be necessary to maintain or increase R-value and maintain comfort. Homes that have been weatherized require less energy to heat and cool, resulting in lower utility bills and a higher standard of living, but also increases the health of the inside air and comfort levels of the occupants.

he American Diabetes Association’s official mission statement is: ‘To prevent and cure diabetes and improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.’ In order to accomplish this goal, the association funds research, sponsors outreach programs, offers support to those affected, and hosts large-scale fund-raising events designed to educate and entertain.
In Atlanta, the local American Diabetes Association services the entire state and beyond, with a focus on fund-raising and community outreach. Every year, the Atlanta ADA brings in money for the national organization, which sends over $40 million annually to fund research related to type1 and type-2 diabetes. “We do Tour de Cure, which is a cycling event, and that happens in May every year and has historically been at Boundary Waters Park in (Douglasville, Ga),” says Tiffany Kirkland, the Manager of Fund-raising and Special events for the Atlanta ADA. “It is a ride, not a race; so people of all athletic abilities are invited to participate. And we have rides from 2 miles to 100 miles; so it’s really inclusive, to get people out there.” The event raised over $300 thousand in May for the ADA, and saw around 500 riders participate. The Tour de Cure is more than just a day of bike riding. In traditional festival style, there are games and other activities set up, in hopes of encouraging participants to bring their whole family. “Basically, our main focus for fund-raising events is that we want people to come out and experience exercise and a healthy lifestyle and enjoy it, and we don’t want to hinder people from participating in that,” says Tiffany. “So, if they want to ride 14 miles on a bike and have never done it before, come on out. It’s really fun. We have bike mechanics, a rest stop, a fun festival. We try to make it a really fun event.” Another major event hosted every year in Atlanta is Step Out: A Walk to Cure Diabetes. This 5K run/walk event is also designed with people of all athletic backgrounds in mind. Serving as the event’s chairman in 2014 is Tommy Estes, the President of Estes Services. His job is to maximize fund-raising efforts and develop new streams of income with his network of partners, in order to assure the walk is a total success. 20

To help facilitate the idea that these events are as much about support as they are fund-raising, the ADA set up the Red Rider/Strider program, where those who live with diabetes and participate in either the Tour de Cure or Step Out can connect and function as a team during events. “This is our way to acknowledge the hardship these people have to go through every day, and acknowledge the success they’ve had over the year, and really make them feel special. It’s a way to start to build a network of people who are living with diabetes, so they don’t feel like they’re alone,” Tiffany says. “There is a lot of great friendships that are formed out of these groups. There’s a lot of great networking that are formed out of these groups. And, it really becomes a community within those programs.” The American Diabetes Association also sets up support programs to help those whose lives are affected by the disease. Some of these are special events where diabetics can speak to doctors and learn valuable information about how to regulate their condition. Individuals can also call 1-800-Diabetes, where they can gather much of the same information in private. With an estimated 29 million Americans affected with diabetes, and that number expected to continue to rise, the mission of the American Diabetes Association seems more important than ever before. Their goal is to educate the public, tear down myths associated with diabetes, and stamp out the disease for good. For more information about the Tour de Cure, Step Out, and other American Diabetes Association programs, visit their website at diabetes.org.

Back up your power with a Eaton Standby Generator
Whether it’s caused by a utility power interruption or weather disasters, power outages are frequent occurrences. Yet we depend on power more than ever. A power outage is more than an inconvenience. It could cost you thousands of dollars. Loss of power sends families to motels and restaurants. Basements flood when sump pumps have no power. When you lose power in an outage you also lose your family’s security and way of life. myhome.eaton.com
Why Why
Why
Do I Need a Generator?
A
power outage can swiftly demonstrate our dependence on electricity because we are so connected. Losing electricity for moments can often feel like an hour, and it often feels like we are cut off from the world. In essence, we are cut off. In Georgia, the occasional blackout during a storm is nothing new, but what is new is the growing number of violent winter and summer storms. Loss of power seems to happen more often, and for longer periods. When power is lost, out come flashlights and the silence begins. In some cases, power outages can last for minutes to a few hours, but sometimes, in rare cases, power can be down for days or weeks. The refrigerator stops and everything is defrosting, and the extreme temperatures of summer and winter can make life downright unbearable. Our nation’s power grid is a network that works together to provide power to a locale. But, a whole system requires each individual system to work well so the entire network is healthy.
It is a fact that as the storm systems have worsened, the entire system has become more taxed. A local storm may not be severe, but a severe storm in a neighboring community, or state, could cause local interruption because resources may be pulled to help restore power elsewhere. It doesn’t take long for a domino effect to take place. There is a kind of deafening silence that almost screams when the power goes out. Owning a generator is an investment. It’s like insurance. You may never need it, but when you do need it, there is no doubt it was the right choice. 22

Many homes operate solely on electric power, from appliances, heating or air conditioning, water delivery service and other electronics. The impact that an electrical power outage has on our lifestyles is immediately apparent. To lessen the impact of a power outage, a quality stand-by generator is a good investment, until power is restored. Surviving a power outage depends on your needs, health conditions of the home’s occupants and safety concerns.
What are generators?
A whole house back-up generator provides ongoing electric service when connected directly to the home electrical panel. The back-up system is powered by an external fuel supply, such as propane, natural gas or gasoline. The whole house unit is installed permanently, and can be set-up to switch over automatically when electrical power is lost. The steadfast solution of installing a back-up generator for a home will ensure electricity for all household needs, including heat, air conditioning and security systems. The house will remain operational, comfortable and safe during a power outage. When municipal power returns, the automatic switch shuts down the generator and reconnects the house to the grid. This seamless operation makes standby generators ideal for families with small children, as well as those needing uninterrupted use of electric-powered medical equipment. With so many work-from-home offices, keeping a home business operational can also mean less income lost by the occupants. Installing a standby generator is not a do-it-yourself project. Hire a professional to assess your load needs before purchasing a whole house generator. The higher the need for power in an emergency or temporary situation, the higher generator capacity is needed to deliver power to the household circuits. Whole house generator installation requires advanced electrical and plumbing skills, as well as knowledge of local building codes.

Develop an Emergency Strategy • Stock up on essentials – Keep these items in a designated “emergency supply kit” for easy access. • Stock your home with several flashlights and the corresponding batteries – Candles pose the risk of accidental fires when emergency services may already be overwhelmed. • Purchase a battery-powered radio – Television won’t be available, so invest in a battery-powered radio to stay alert of any evacuation orders or status updates on the power outage. • Know your telephones – If you have a landline, it might require electricity to operate. So, “Just had my furnace and central air conditioning unit replaced and added a heat pump. either get a phone without electric I have been a customer of Estes for several years now so when I had to replace my unit, I dependency or plan to keep your knew I wanted them to do the work for me. These people really charger that attaches to your cigaknow this business and are highly professional.” - Michael Chapman rette lighter or auxiliary plug (depending on the model of your vehicle); you can use your car as If you don’t see the need for a generator just yet, learn how a supplementary power source to charge your cell phone. to prepare for power outages: • Prevent pipes from freezing – Without heat, plumbing Plan Ahead can become frozen and create expensive repair problems, so keep a small stream of water running in faucets. • Turn up your refrigerator and freezer to the highest cool levels so they stay colder longer in a power outage.
• Cook up any perishable products in advance so all you need to do is take it out to eat. Know what is in your fridge and freezer and where it is located so you can minimize the air exposure and keep items in the appliance cold for as long as possible. • Prepare to cook outside the home, like on a BBQ grill or on a camper stove. Make sure you have plenty of fuel and never cook inside because carbon monoxide is odorless and tasteless, but deadly. • Make sure you have a manual can opener that works. • Fill clean sinks and bathtubs with water and have bleach handy. Learn how to best disinfect your water sources and plan to reuse your water when possible. • Look for a resource for a disaster preparedness plan in your community.
(404) 361-6560
• Unplug all appliances and leave only one light switched on – There is an added risk of power surges that can occur after an outage. Surges following an outage can destroy equipment and appliances. Leave one light on so you know when the power has returned. • Plan locations to visit nearby that are likely to have generators – If roads are safe for travel, plan where you could go that has a generator and essentials, if necessary. Before and after storms generators fly off the shelf of every location that sells them. Portable units might work for a very short-term need, but they aren’t efficient or practical for a long-term solution. Remember: Safety first when it comes to surviving emergencies. Prepare a home emergency plan and location(s) to meet others in case you get separated.

Estes' TechBuilder Program by Joel Heller
E
Who better to teach, train and develop than someone who has faced every challenge any HVAC Technician will face? Bob’s challenge was to develop a successful plan that would allow us to select candidates from outside the HVAC industry and train them to do the job the way we demand. For years we have stood on the sidelines and watched the quality of the labor force coming into the HVAC Industry stagnate. This year, we decided to take our fate into our own hands and build our own technicians—and it worked incredibly well. In short, our commitment to providing you with the best HVAC technician around has taken us far outside of our comfort zone, and it has paid huge dividends. 26

This program is centered around three primary components. The first is classroom discussions and lectures designed to introduce concepts to our future technicians. The second component is experimentation time in our lab that we call Estes University. This state of the art lab has 5 functional units with every bell and whistle that can be offered in the HVAC Industry. This helps us feel confident that, when these new techs enter the field, they have been trained on all facets of the equipment they will encounter. The third component is on-on-one job training by our hand-selected TechBuilder trainers. Each of these components form the pillars of our training commitment. Each portion of this training has specific focus areas that allow us to drill down to the core of the principles we are teaching. We will embark on our second class of TechBuilder this fall and we already have three additional HVAC TechBuilder classes slotted for 2015. In addition to the success of TechBuilder, we are

Even your Need “My old air conditioner had to be replaced if I wanted a cool home again. At the same time, I decided to oust the gas heating system. Therefore, Estes had to upgrade my electrical panel to make room for a total electric heating and air conditioning system, as well as install those systems. I am very pleased with the work done in my home and the equipment installed. Everyone from the sales rep to the techs have done an outstanding job for me.” - Robin R. Stewart
Y
our air conditioner is one of the hardest working appliances in your home, and it deserves some love and special attention. At least once a year, it’s important to give your a/c system a full inspection and tune-up, to assure that it’s running smoothly when you need it most. If you live in a warm climate, chances are your air conditioner runs constantly for most of the year. During that time, filters will become dirty, coils can become caked with dust, blockages may develop, and system leaks may become worse. Any number of issues may develop in your system while it’s actively working overtime to cool your home and, conversely, your system may also develop problems while it’s dormant during the winter months. Servicing your unit allows any potential concerns to be spotted early, before they become worse. If your air conditioning system has a small problem that you allow to spiral downward, a major repair could be in your future. The cost of an a/c repair – or worse, a full system replacement – is almost certainly going to be more expensive than a maintenance appointment. Look at it this way: If your car needs an oil change and you neglect to take care of it, you could end up blowing the engine. Your air conditioner works much in the same way; you have to maintain it regularly, or you risk causing serious damage that could end up costing you a small fortune. The longevity and health of your system is only part of the reason why regular upkeep is a great idea. Annual maintenance assures that your system is working as efficiently as possible, using only the amount of energy it needs to get the job done. In short, keeping your system clean and tuned-up improves energy efficiency, and will likely save you money on energy bills. For older systems, this annual maintenance is even more important, and not just because it’s at increased risk for breaking down. Older systems are less energy-efficient and, combined with the rising cost of power, saving money while using them can be a real hassle. By paying for a relatively

inexpensive service call once or twice a year, you’re almost assuredly going to get that money back in terms of what you’ll save on bills. A maintenance visit keeps all systems running at an optimal level, and for older systems it may be what prevents a major malfunction. Regular maintenance has an up-front cost, but neglecting to do it could be far more expensive. In the end, a large repair bill is going to cost you far more, and the savings you’ll reap on energy bills are worth the cost of an appointment. Remember, no machine is designed to work forever. Your a/c system needs to be taken care of properly, and doing so could expand its lifespan well beyond the years the manufacturer ever intended.

Water Heaters 101 by Maxine Renee
Water Heaters “Estes has serviced our air conditioning units for many years. When one unit finally had to be replaced, they recommended a new Carrier system. Their personnel worked well together as a team and completed the job in an excellent manner from start to finish, from proposal to installation.” - Juana McGhee
W
e have all heard people boast about having the same water heater forever, and they typically say that it “still runs like a champ,” but, of course, that’s only until it doesn’t.
No hot water heater has an unlimited lifespan. The lifespan of a water heater depends on both the quality of the appliance, and the quality of the water running through it. People who live in areas with hard water or areas with humid climates may have to replace a water heater more often. Don’t be faced with making the decision on your next water heater when in crisis mode. The options for heating water have become more varied than ever before. The new high-efficiency models save on energy, and incentives from area utility companies and possible manufacturer rebates make it worthwhile to do your homework in advance. Research your options on water heaters in advance, talk to a trusted advisor, and learn about pricing and options. Conventional Water Heater Maintenance As with any piece of equipment or appliance that works day in and day out, a maintenance plan can help avoid problems. Waiting until a water heater shows signs of trouble may be too late. Here are a few maintenance tips to prolong the life of your conventional water heater and keep it running efficiently: Get rid of collected sediment to keep the unit running efficiently and prevent corrosion. Drain the water heater twice a year to keep a water heater healthy. Test the pressure relief valve by lifting the valve handle and letting it snap back. This should release a burst of water into the overflow drainpipe. If it doesn’t have a burst of water, have a new valve installed. 36

Maintain the temperature setting on the thermostat at 120 degrees, reducing damage to the tank caused by overheating.
If a conventional water heater is not producing as much hot water as you expect, it’s time to have it checked.
Small leaks can go undetected for a long period of time, so a visual check once a month is prudent. The worst situation is when there is a flood of water that pours out of the water heater, causing floor or other home damage Replace or Repair A water heater is the quiet background worker in any house, that gets a constant workout and is always expected to perform, until it doesn't. If your water heater is more than 10 years old, leaks around the base of the tank, works erratically or not very well, it probably needs to be replaced. In any case, make sure that an electrical problem, such as a blown fuse or tripped breaker, is not the reason for the unit failing. Before making any repairs, or purchasing a new water heater, check the nameplate on the side of your current unit. Here you will find helpful information including the tank capacity, insulation R-value, installation guidelines, working pressure, model and serial number. If you have an electric water heater, the nameplate will also list the wattage capacity and voltage of the heating elements. This information will serve as the starting point in your search for replacement or for parts. If you choose to replace an electric unit for a gas unit-or vice versa, a professional will need to be contracted.
estesair.com
Types of Water Heaters Most water heaters are gas or electric, but choices are no longer limited. Compare the options to determine the water heater best suited for you: Electric – Uses 1 or 2 heating elements to heat water. Electric water heaters can be used “almost” anywhere. Natural Gas or Propane – Uses a burner to heat water; needs circulating air; cannot store combustibles nearby and must be vented. Gas water heaters are usually installed in a home that has existing gas for another appliance, like a furnace, stove or fireplace. Solar – Uses heat from sun to heat water; most require back-up systems for cloudy days; tax incentives may be available. Heat Pump – Uses energy from outside or inside air; larger than standard water heaters. It is practical to consider an upgrade when purchasing a new water heater. For example: if space allows, you may choose to increase the unit’s holding capacity to accommodate a growing family, or consider an ondemand tankless water heater to save on space and energy. Replacement time is the perfect time to lower your energy bill by choosing a water heater that is more energy efficient. When looking at water heaters, consider these points:
Either way, a professional can provide a variety of options that will help you make your decision, based on your needs. They will know how to get the job done quickly while meeting required building safety codes. Consider these points when deciding what to do or who to work with on replacement: A building permit is usually required when replacing a water heater. This is for the safety of the occupants and the future homeowners. If you are buying a home and they have indicated that the water heater has been replaced, verify that it was permitted or it may not have been installed correctly. Conventional water heaters are heavy and very bulky, so consider this when planning a replacement. How do you dispose of an old water heater? Local codes govern the disposal of such appliances. Know what those are before you proceed or you might have a new piece of yard art for a while.
(404) 361-6560
Recovery Rate – Conventional water heaters are rated for the number of gallons that can be heated per hour. The greater your demand for hot water, the higher the recovery rate needed. Location Dimensions – The height and width of the space must be considered. The physical space may limit your ability to upgrade a unit. Energy Efficiency – ENERGY STAR® is the trusted, government-backed label that posts the energy efficiency of a unit. It provides consumers with an estimated annual cost of operations.

His career at Estes Services began when Tommy Estes, the owner of the company, hired Scott to do plumbing work at his home. Scott was excited for the opportunity. “The responsibility of starting a new department was challenging, but I knew Estes Services was a quality company. Electrical panels in homes have built-in safeguards to prevent electrical overload. These days, households are using much more electricity than might have originally been planned for the home, sometimes a circuit will trip, or in the case of a very old home, a fuse will blow. Also, if rust appears on the metal service panel, it can indicate a moisture problem or deterioration. These are warning signs that should not be ignored. Check your ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFI). They are required for electrical outlets in areas near wet locations, like kitchens, baths, utility room, garages and outdoor outlets. Test your GFIs periodically and if they aren’t doing what they are designed to do, replace them. Keep in mind that electrical power surges can damage delicate circuit boards in consumer products like, home computers, appliances and televisions. Some locations have more power surges than others, so if you think you are experiencing frequent power surges, consider installing a surge protector. This can be an inexpensive piece of insurance that can prevent damage and down time. If using a lot of extension cords or electrical strips with multiple plugs, it might be time to consider installing additional wall outlets. It may appear like these cords and strips might be providing what appears to be a convenience when the lack of an electrical outlets are nearby. But many things plugged in at one location can create more current demand than a single outlet or electrical line can safely handle. Plus, the cords and strips are not built to last forever. They can be a true fire hazard, so definitely do not run them under rugs or furniture, and keep paper and other flammable materials away. If lights dim when the air conditioner or an appliance turns on, it’s may be time to look at electrical loads. Temporary current can draw for start-up needs, but dimming

lights is a sign that damage can be occurring to sensitive equipment or an overload of demand. Electrical outlets should be 3-prong, with the third being a ground, an extra measure of safety against electrical shock. Any outlets that are not 3-prong should be upgraded. If electrical switches or outlets feel warm or tingly when you touch them, it might be a sign of loose or deteriorating electrical connections. This could result in shock or fire, so check your outlets and switches periodically. Check to see if your home is adequately grounded. Groundwiring can protect a home, and its occupants, in the case of an electrical fault. Grounding can also protect expensive electronic equipment like computers, television and appliances. If you aren’t sure if your home is grounded, contact an electrician and they can quickly check for you. The cost to add grounding capacity is not expensive. If your home is over 25-years-old, you could have an inadequate and possibly hazardous electrical system, and not even know it. To be safe, call in an electrician for a thorough inspection, and if necessary bring your home up to today’s electrical code standards. Having smoke detectors or carbon monoxide detectors in a home is essential, but they must be tested. Rule of thumb is to check them in fall and spring, when the time changes, but also make sure to verify that they haven’t expired. Most people don’t realize that some smoke and carbon monoxide detectors have expiration dates stamped on the bottom of the unit. If you don’t know how to verify the lifespan, an electrician can help you find that date, and if necessary, install new units. If you have purchased, or are thinking of purchasing, an electric car, remember to consider where it will be plugged in at the home. Consider the load of that location and make sure to install a dock location that will be able to handle the extra load.

'Carrie SteeleGiving Back Pitts' Giving Giving Children a Second Chance by Garrett Chilson
T
he Carrie Steele-Pitts Children’s Home in Atlanta has an unusual beginning. It began with its founder, Carrie Steele, working as a maid at the Union railroad station. In the late 1800s, children were not infrequently abandoned at railroad stations, in hopes that kind strangers would take them in for adoption. Steele took it upon herself to help these children, allowing them to play in abandoned railroad cars during the day and sleep in her home at night.
is to provide a feeling of comfort, with rooms full of toys, decorations, and furniture. On the campus there are libraries, a computer laboratory, and a central dining hall where all the staff and children have meals together and share stories like a family—everything that a child needs to learn and grow.
In 1888, after raising as much money as she could, she sold her house and built the first “Carrie Steele Orphan Home”, which accomodated a number of children in need of food, clothing, and shelter. She remained the executive director of the home until she passed away in 1908, at which time a woman by the name of Clara Maxwell Pitts took over the duties for over 40 years, changing locations and transforming the orphanage into a United Way facility.
The Steele-Pitts home maintains a 2.5-to-1 staff-to-children ratio in order to meet the growing demand for individual support and care. With so many of these children being exposed to drugs, violence, and sex at young ages, many suffer from severe anxiety, depression, or post-traumatic stress. As a result, special education and therapy is required in order to meet the unique psychological and emotional needs of the young residents. Thankfully, many of these kids grow up to become normal, healthy members of society.
Today, the Carrie Steele-Pitts Children’s Home sits on a beautiful 26-acre campus. Surrounded by woods and made up of playgrounds, grassy fields, and 5 cottages, Steele-Pitts houses over one hundred displaced, abandoned, abused, and neglected children, providing them with healthy meals, positive socialization, and a structured family-oriented lifestyle. Each cottage houses around twenty kids and a team of house parents who provide supervision, care, and emotional support to the residents 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The goal
The number of people whose lives have benefited from the Carrie Steele-Pitts Children’s Home is in the thousands, with many former residents supporting the facility long after their time there comes to an end. What What are Maintenance
What W by Nate Freyburger
Agreements?
hether you’re installing a new air conditioning system or you’re having an old system repaired, chances are there is a maintenance agreement that would benefit you. These agreements are designed to save consumers money on routine maintenance, while also protecting them from any potential problems. But before you jump into buying a maintenance agreement, make sure you find the option that would benefit you the most. Maintenance agreements are between you and an air conditioning service provider, wherein you prepay for maintenance at a discounted rate and receive other additional benefits. They cover routine cleanings and check-ups, and they may help subsidize the cost of massive emergency repairs or offer other savings. Think of them as a peace of mind policy for your system. One overlooked advantage of a maintenance agreement is that it assures your heating and air conditioning system will receive the bi-annual service inspection it needs. These annual tuneups are important, since they allow a professional to spot any potential problems with your system early, before they spiral into something more expensive. Further, an annual maintenance appointment will help to keep your system clean and running efficiently, which could save you money on energy bills.
Many people overlook their air conditioner, ignoring its needs until there’s a serious problem. Similar to how your car requires an oil change in order to keep it running, your air conditioner needs to be regularly serviced in order to prevent catastrophic issues. If something major goes wrong with your system because you have been neglecting to maintain it, a repair may end up costing you thousands of dollars. Just remember that some warranties may require regular maintenance. That’s one of the reasons why maintenance agreements exist – to help mitigate the cost associated with regular air conditioning service calls. Keep in mind that a maintenance agreement is far cheaper than a major system problem caused by a lack of upkeep; having your system routinely serviced could save you big down the line. Some service agreements extend to the plumbing and electrical wiring in your home, in addition to your HVAC system. It’s best to check into all the details of any service agreement, and see if any bundle is available that’ll help you save even more of your hard-earned money. 46

Things to Look for in a Home Comfort System When it’s time to replace your home comfort system, it’s important to consider what a newer system can offer. Here are seven items to consider when purchasing an HVAC system:
RELIABILITY
1
Chances are, your heating and cooling system is the most expensive equipment you will purchase for your home. That’s why it’s important to choose proven products from a reputable manufacturer.
EFFICIENCY
2
A new ENERGY STAR®-labeled system, when properly sized and installed, can save you up to 30% on your annual heating and cooling costs.* Plus, it may qualify you for utility rebates** in certain regions.
3 CONSISTENT TEMPERATURES 4
Air conditioners can produce sounds as high as 80 decibels. Look for technologies and features that help keep operating sound at a comfortable level.
5 PROPER AIRFLOW 6
To maintain proper moisture levels in your home, choose a thermostat that controls both temperature and humidity.
QUIET OPERATION
BALANCED HUMIDITY
HEALTHY AIR
7
With a typical furnace or single-speed air conditioner, indoor temperature can vary as much as seven degrees from the thermostat setting. A properly installed programmable thermostat gives you the assurance of precise temperature control*.
A typical furnace motor runs at one speed and circulates a constant volume of air, so it responds to changing comfort demands by repeatedly cycling on and off. This frequent cycling increases air stratification and stagnation. For optimal air circulation, choose a variable speed model. One of the best ways to combat indoor pollution is to attach an air cleaner to your furnace or air handler. That way, you can have peace of mind knowing your system is working to capture small contaminants in every room of your home. * Source: www.energystar.gov
