■ WHATS YOUR SECRET WEAPON ■ WOMEN
Research shows that one reason females have difficulty losing weight compared to men is lower levels of testosterone. When they do lose weight, they do not gain muscle mass like men do. Low levels of Testosterone in women can cause unwanted bulging in hips/thighs, infertility, fragile bones, inability to orgasm, and thinning hair. Levels of Testosterone in women vary from 17 to 80 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dL), depending on age and other factors. As they get older, those levels can fall as low as 1 to 10 ng/dl. Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is equally as beneficial in females as in men, just on a smaller scale.
LIFESTYLE
A healthy lifestyle is associated with higher hormone levels and higher hormone levels seem to induce a more active, healthier lifestyle. Treatments for men are aimed at getting testosterone levels up to an optimal range, around 850 to 1100. Treatments for women are aimed at getting testosterone levels up to an optimal range, around 40 to 60. We offer easy inexpensive testing, saliva, finger prick, blood s e r u m or urine ($25.00 to $50.00).
MEN Research published in the Journal of Endocrinology
shows that low levels of testosterone is a risk factor for heart disease in men and is also linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Levels of Testosterone in men vary from 150 to 1200 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dL), depending on age and other factors. Testosterone levels typically start to decline after age 30. For some men, as they get older, those levels fall to 500 or below. “Low T” has been attributed to low sex drive, sluggish feeling, muscle aches, memory loss, lack of focus and inability to lose weight even while dieting and hitting the Gym.
WEAPON
As with other hormones, conventional medical opinion about testosterone is lagging way behind the scientific evidence. Agevital is your research expert! Let us be your healthcare advocate and help you start LIVING, not just existing. We compound hormones in easy to use mechanism such as: Creams, Injectables, Troches, or sublingual tablets. 100% Bio-identical to the body.

In this edition we explore workplace wellness. It’s not surprising that more and more companies, big and small, have dedicated health and wellness programs in place to not only keep employees healthy, but also to save on health care costs. From major local employers with thousands of employees to smaller companies with a just a couple of hundred on the payroll, programs run the gamut from partial gym reimbursement to onsite 24-7 fitness centers that feature classes and massage therapy, free nutritional and fitness assessments, and healthy meal choices in on-site cafés, even employee fitness challenges, health fairs, weight loss and smoking cessation coaching and more. Fit941 is very involved in workplace wellness and is currently planning a spring 2017 multi-event corporate wellness challenge, so stay tuned for details about that. Bottom line, workplace wellness isn’t a trend, it’s here to stay. And speaking of trends, we have a fascinating feature about the ancient healing art of cupping, hot and trendy now because of the Summer 2016 Olympics in Rio where gold medalist Michael Phelps and other athletes showcased the tell-tale round dark purplish marks on their bodies. (Interesting because Kinesio Taping, the elastic therapeutic tape used to support, prevent and treat athletic injuries, was seen everywhere at the 2012 Olympics; elite athletes often set the bar for the rest of us.) As a Chiropractic physician for almost 20 years, cupping is very familiar to me but not to everyone, so it’s a great time to revisit the treatment, especially since National Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine day falls on October 24th. Back to fall, we also have a feature on costumed runs and races in honor of Halloween. It’s a great time of the year to add a little pizzazz to your workout by doing it in costume! Lots of gyms and fitness centers feature costumed workouts, so check with yours or visit the Fit941 Facebook page, where we’ll share any costumed workouts we hear about. Also in this issue, we have articles about kids’ fitness, a profile on Definition Fitness, an awesome story about a young athlete, our ‘beet beat’ where we really get into beets and lots more. Happy Autumn, 941ers!

Success Story Bradenton’s First Ever Half Marathon!
I
ntroducing the Hernando DeSoto Historical Society’s inaugural Bradenton-Area Half Marathon and Conquistador 1 Mile Fun Run, slated for Oct. 15, 2016. The Bradenton Runners Club (BRC) is partnering with the historical society for the event.

G.W. Burns
G
reg “GW” Burns, an acclaimed top glamour and fitness photographer, has spent his career capturing the beauty of the human form. He says it was particularly ironic then that he was more than 30 pounds overweight …and feeling every bit of it. “Here I was shooting some of the best physiques in the world and I had let myself go,” he says. “I had to start walking the walk.” An admitted junk food junkie, Burns had also suffered the loss of his father when he passed away and at the same time, a bad breakup. He was grieving and broken-hearted and being overweight and feeling insecure about that was a perfect storm of misery. So what did he do? He took the negative and made it positive, he says. “Live your life as if tomorrow is always going to be better. That’s what I had to do.” Burns quit eating junk food, started walking, and then combined walking and running. And while shooting a fitness show, he met DefFit’s Daemian Mains, who started training him and he was hooked. Next, he hired nutritionist and coach Kris Leonard, who put him on a macro diet. “Today, at almost 60, I’m in the best shape of my life, better shape than I have ever been in,” he says, better even then when he was a young college tennis player: “I have abs. I never had abs.” And as important, the fitness folks he’d been photographing, he believes, had a new found respect for him and he them. “It’s helped me professionally but also, maybe I can stand for us older people and say, ‘It’s not too late. You can still do this. If I can do it, you can do it.’”
The signature event, which is also part of the 2016 BRC Racing Series, will also feature live music, cheerleaders, DJs, mascots, floats and more. The half-marathon kicks off at 6:30 a.m. in downtown Bradenton and proceeds to Manatee Avenue and the Green Bridge challenge; run over the mile-wide Manatee River, through historic Palmetto then back over the bridge. Continue along Bradenton's main thoroughfare before turning onto Riverview Boulevard with a few more turns until the finish downtown just before the opening of the Farmer’s Market on Old Main Street. Half marathon runners will receive a Finisher’s Medal, Tech Shirt and access to the Beer Garden (21 and over). Conquistador 1 Mile Fun Run will receive a Finisher’s Medal and a Conquistador Helmet. Plaques will be available for purchase on race day so you can transform your medal into something you can proudly display. Organizers say post-race hospitality will be top notch, complete with massages, craft beer and recovery fuel. The money raised by the Bradenton-Area Half Marathon will support student scholarships and local charitable organizations. Registration is under way; visit BradentonHalfMarathon.com to sign-up or for more information.

Music Half Marathon Supports Non-Profits
Athlete Profile
S
ince 2014, the Sarasota Music Half Marathon raised more than $57,000 for local non-profits. Organizers say many of the non-profits that work with the event are small and may not receive the attention larger organizations do. Local non-profits help staff the half marathon with volunteers who play myriad roles leading up to, during and after the event.
“That’s what makes our non-profit engagement special,” said Sarasota Music Half Marathon Event Director, Ryan McCarthy. “If we can help Tuttle Elementary afford a new playground or Mothers Helping Mothers pay its rent, that makes us feel like we are a part of the local community and the participants of the race should feel like they are a part of that as well.” For example, the Children’s Healthy Pantry, which provides healthy snacks and water to 10 of the 16 Title I schools in Sarasota and Manatee Counties representing close to 900 children, used the donation they received to help 200 children for a month. They also received a large portion of the unused water from the event. The Riverview High School Papillon Club, a mentorship program for girls used their race donation to support scholarships to three outstanding student club members. And the Mark Wandall Foundation, which partners with nationally recognized youth bereavement camp Comfort Zone, used the donation it received to cover the costs for a grieving child at the three-day camp. “We get excited about helping multiple local non-profits take the small steps toward achieving their goals each year, and therefore we strive to be the Race for Sarasota. I think that’s what makes our event special, and the participants need to know they are a part of that mission,” McCarthy says. The 2017 Sarasota Music Half Marathon is set for Feb. 5 with an expected field of 4,000 participants. For more information, visit SarasotaHalf.com.

Dena Dawson Dena Dawson was just 8 when she began bicycle motocross (BMX). Traditionally a male-dominated sport, that fact was never an issue for Dena though she did have difficulty in finding other BMX girls with which to race and ride. But that didn’t stop the 15-year-old Lakewood Ranch High School sophomore. “I absolutely fell in love with this sport right away,” Dena says. “I loved everything about it from getting in the gate with eight other girls to learning new skills on the track.” Dena explains that when she first began as a BMX rider, she started with “a few practices and then started racing locals.” “From there I began racing in state races, then national races and then international races,” she says. Indeed, Dena has not only competed locally, regionally, and nationally but globally. She rides for BMX Team Factory YESS. The owner is Renny Husada and team manager is Lisa Motley. “I love my competitions. BMX is so unpredictable any person in the gate with you can win,” Dena says. “The adrenaline rush is crazy; getting to race seven other people that want the same thing as you – to win.” Dena recently competed in Europe. “My best BMX day ever was the 2015 UCI BMX World Championships in Belgium which was my first international race and first trip to Europe. I was so surprised with the way I was riding and shocked a lot of people with my racing as well,” she says.

An Appoin Ease of Making
The SAAKA brand was born out of necessity by creator and owner Steven Wieder on Siesta Key, “where we know and understand best how to handle heat and humidity,” he says. SAAKA headbands, wristbands and armbands keep sweat out of athletes’ eyes and off their hands using super absorbent, odor combating fabrics viscose and bamboo between layers of antimicrobial poly/spandex wicking fabric. Wieder says without sweat in the eyes or slippery hands, vision stays clear and an athletes grip remains dry and secure.

The triathlon includes: a .3 mile swim, a laser measured and well-marked beachside swim course along the iconic lifeguard towers of World Famous Siesta Key Beach with water safety above USAT standards and with medical staff always on site; a 13-mile bike ride which organizers says is an improved ride with a minor reroute at the north end of the bike course has allowed an exact 13 mile bike course with 1 less turn for this year’s race which allows for a safer course for our athletes, the organizer’s number one priority; and a 3.1 mile run, back by popular demand, the run course almost entirely along the handpicked white sand and blue-green waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The cut-off times for the swim course will close 30 minutes after start of last swim wave (projected closing time is 8:15 a.m. at swim exit). Also, athletes must exit Transition Area and cross Bike Mount line by 8:25am to continue with the bike segment of the race. The bike course will close at 9:30 a.m. providing a minimum of 65 minutes to complete the course. Athletes must be inside of transition by 9:30 a.m. to continue with the run segment of the race. Workplace Wellness Works
When You Work It By Ellyn Santiago
ith obesity and its related side effects and conditions, think diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoarthritis and plenty more, at epidemic levels in the U.S. – some argue in measure propped up by a sedentary workforce tied to desks – workplace wellness programs have never been more popular and important, not just for worker health but company health as well. Poor health from obesity drives up costs, increases absenteeism, contributes to injury or disability and is responsible for through-the-roof healthcare claims. Wellness programs that focus on preventative health practices are not just cost-effective, but increase productivity and decrease healthcare costs.
W
Working Wellness
A workplace wellness program is a company-wide health and wellness promotion that encourages healthy behaviors while at work and can include activities ranging from medical screenings to workout and weight management programs. The idea is to provide employees time in their day to exercise—which might include an on-site gym or a walk-and-talk meeting—to healthy options in cafeterias or vending machines and often include perks for participating.
place programs, policies, and environments that are healthfocused and worker-centered have the potential to significantly benefit employers, employees, their families, and communities.” Plus, there’s the return on investment concept: healthy employees are more productive employees. On-site fitness centers and other wellness opportunities, like some offered by businesses in the 941, make for happier employees. Not to mention that some companies subsidize workplace wellness programs in an effort to save money. The U.S. Departments of Labor and Health and Human Services’ 2012 RAND workplace wellness report found that companies with exercise programs saw healthcare costs decrease, short-term sick leave lowered and productivity increased. It’s not rocket science.
941 Corporate Wellness
Most public agencies in Sarasota and Manatee counties – school districts, city and county government, law enforcement and the like – have health and wellness programs that include on-site exercise and fitness as well as incentive programs for preventative health screening and care.

membership and also works in the community by sponsoring various runs and races including the Annual Wilde Automotive Family YMCA Ringling Bridge Run. Palmer says participation in the program has been up to 20 percent, but people forget and he says, it’s “time for a re-launch.”
IMG Academy of Bradenton, with more than 600 employees offers staff unlimited and free use of its state-of-the-art fitness and training facilities, access to golfing, its wellness spa and discounts to area gyms and fitness centers.
“I just want people to be healthy, happy and be better at home and at work,” he says. "There was a time where you’d walk in with a box of doughnuts and you’d be a hero. Now they throw staplers at you,” he laughed.
Wilde Automotive Family, which has five locations (Wilde Honda, Wilde Lexus of Sarasota, and Wilde Jaguar-Land Rover and Maserati), started a wellness program in 2009 to inspire its 280 employees to lead a more health-focused lifestyle. And while VP Dean Palmer says participation ebbs and flows, the program has “changed the company culture.” Palmer says the impetus for instituting the program, which he created and wrote, came during a management workshop where it was agreed a key weakness within the company and with upper management in particular, actually “the people sitting in that room,” he says, “myself included, who was way overweight and on blood pressure medication and one guy who wasn’t there because he’d had a heart attack and a couple of other guys in that room that had health issues.” Palmer says “our industry is particularly well known for eating poorly, long hours, high stress, and the people sitting in that room were a very good sampling of that. We decided then we had to start a health and wellness program.” Palmer wrote a wellness plan and policy for the company with the help of a nutritionist. But, he admits, “at that time I was 260 pounds and quite frankly, you can’t ask someone to be in a wellness program when you’re obese,” he admits. So Palmer set the tone. “I lost 40 pounds before we even started. I went first. I met with a trainer.” Palmer says he was a gym regular, did spin classes and “got involved in triathlons.” He says key management he was most concerned with has been participating in the program since the beginning. The Wilde Automotive Family Health and Wellness program helps employees cover the cost of gym 24 SEPTEMBER | OCTOBER 2016
The Insurer’s Perspective
Insurers certainly have a major stake in workplace wellness. For example, UnitedHealthcare has myriad corporate wellness programs “designed to promote health and well-being among employees to both contain health care costs and maintain a healthier workforce,” according to its website. But UHC’s Health Strategies Consultant Beth Granger explains what makes a great workplace wellness program is not just an onsite workout room or healthy selections in the company cafeteria. “A really effective and strategic corporate wellness program is marrying (education about) the benefits offered employees (combined) with the company’s wellness program so it’s the culture of the organization,” she says. “When you walk down the hall there’s access to water (coolers) to keep you hydrated. There are opportunities to be able to get up and move throughout the day, walking meetings, stand-up desks. The employer encourages you take those PTO (paid time off) days so you have that time to check-out. You’re not expected to be attached to your computer or cell every minute of the day,” she says. “And, importantly, the employer is helping you use your benefits most effectively,” because, as Granger says, “What good are having all these great benefits, those free vision screening or preventative screenings every year, and nobody goes to them? Or free mammograms but you don’t use it? So employers have to educate employees by connecting their wellness program with information about their benefits and say, ‘This is why you need to do a mammogram. This is why you need to do a colonoscopy.’ That’s how you work a great and effective wellness program.” Granger suggests employees ask themselves if they’re close to those national standards for blood pressure, BMI, and glucose levels. “Are you providing yourself with the tools and resources you have with your benefits to keep your mental wellbeing at a healthy level,” Granger asks rhetorically. “In a great workplace wellness program when you come to an employee and ask them about wellness that can tell you they have ‘ownership of their health and wellbeing.’ It’s all about health ownership.”

W
The National Institutes of Healthfunded research study is a tough read, unless you have a command of Latin, know intimately the periodic table of elements and are a chemist, but one simple and stunning fact comes though: beets are really, really good for you. They contain powerful nutrient compounds which are shown to protect humans (and rats) from cancers, in particular colon cancer, heart disease, and a number of birth defects. And, according to the University of Illinois, beets are particularly rich in folate. “Folate and folic acid have been found to prevent neural-tube birth defects and aid in the fight against heart disease and anemia,” the UI Extension says.
“Beets are also high in fiber, both soluble and insoluble. Insoluble fiber helps to keep your intestinal track running smoothly and soluble fiber helps to keep your blood sugar and blood cholesterol levels on track.” According to whfoods.org, beets contain the amazing phytonutrients betalains which include betanin and vulgaxanthin; two of best-studied betalains, which have both been shown to “provide antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and detoxification support.” And if this all wasn’t incentive enough to include beets in your diet, in scientific studies on human tumor cells, “betanin pigments from beets have been shown to lessen tumor cell growth through a number of mechanisms, including inhibition of pro-inflammatory enzymes (specifically, cyclooxygenase enzymes),” according to whfoods. org, adding that while studies are not

definitive proof, the results are nonetheless “encouraging” news for potential prevention and treatment of certain cancers. One thing to keep in mind with beets is the potential for reddening of urine (beeturia) following consumption for some folks. And while whfoods.org says it’s not a cause for any concern, in some cases it may, emphasis on the word may, indicate problems with iron metabolism, namely, some “individuals with iron deficiency, iron excess, or specific problems with iron metabolism are much more likely to experience beeturia than individuals with healthy iron metabolism” and so if a person experiences beeturia and have already suspected an iron deficiency, check with a healthcare provider. Cupping It Really Sucks! By Ellyn Santiago
f you watched the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, you may have noticed swimmer (and most decorated Olympian ever) Michael Phelps and other athletes with round dark purplish marks on their shoulders, torsos and backs. One athlete, a female Chinese swimmer had her back peppered with the mysterious bruise-like circles. It turns out there’s no mystery: these marks are from cupping, a centuries-old healing art. Some claim it has no proven medical value as a pain reliever, but that argument hasn’t fazed proponents and practitioners over the millennia.
I
Cupping is an ancient therapy where heated glass cups are placed on the skin on the “meridians of the body” thereby creating suction to stimulate energy flow. Cupping was practiced by the Egyptians, Chinese and other ancient Middle Eastern cultures as early as 1,550 BCE. The ancient way had a practitioner put herbs in the cup, light it on fire and when the fire died out, the glass or earthenware cup was placed upside down on the skin. The flame would use up the oxygen in the cup thus creating a vacuum. The skin rose and reddened when blood vessels expanded, and hence the dark round marks that appear like bruising left by the cups. The process acts as deep tissue massage which is said to alleviate pain and help with scores of medical and health problems, supporters and practitioners claim. Today, while that method is still used, mostly therapists will use a “pistol pump” or a rubber bulb to create the suction. Cupping is also used combined with acupuncture and massage. 28 SEPTEMBER | OCTOBER 2016
So while cupping may be in the news and trending on social media, the healing art is hardly a phase. Just ask the cupping practitioners in the 941. Stacie Nevelus’ credentials are impressive, as is her client list. Nevelus is a licensed Massage Therapist and a national educator with ACE Massage Cupping™ and MediCupping™ and Certified Neuromuscular Therapist who treats professional athletes with acute and chronic injuries. She explains that she was first introduced to massage cupping in 2005, six years after she first became a licensed massage therapist. She described massage cupping as an “ancient modality modernized.” She was soon certified as a practitioner and integrated the modernized healing art into her existing neuromuscular and myofascial therapies. She says the addition of cupping to massage treatment yielded amazing results in combination with deep tissue massage for acute and chronic injury rehabilitation. Since, Nevelus has treated professional athletes including tennis players, Triathletes, Olympic runners, and MLB and NFL players among myriad of others. Her clients include Adam Jones of the Baltimore Orioles, David Baas formerly of the New York Giants, and Bronson Arroyo currently with the Washington Nationals organization. In fact, as Fit941 goes to press, Nevelus is on the road with the Orioles. Nevelus has worked with MLB clients for a decade, the Cincinnati Reds for three years and she’s been working with the Orioles for seven years. She also has clients throughout the American and National leagues.
FIT941.COM
Nevelus explains in more depth how cupping works: “Simply put, a cup is placed on the skin and a vacuum is created using various methods. A warm sensation is experienced as the nutrient rich blood flow is brought to the tissue. The result is softer tissue and a new found freedom of movement.” There are different types of methodology when using cups, she says. The traditional Chinese method of cupping is “typically used by an acupuncturist or a TCM trained practitioner.”
EAT EAT DRINK DRINK ENJOY ENJOY
“This method is culturally rich and dates back thousands of years having been used by not only by the Chinese, but the Greeks and Egyptians to name a few. With this method, cups are often stationary and left on for 15 minutes at a time. This is more than likely the method that was used on Michael Phelps,” she explains. Her process includes a different application on athletes: vacuum therapy. “I use the same cups and often a machine to create the vacuum, but apply those using different methods and intentions. I will often glide a cup or park one for two to three minutes on an area to release a tight area or trigger point. I like to think of the cup as a looking glass into the tissue. When gliding over the tissue, blood flow is brought to the area. Gliding the cup can show possible restrictions, adhesions as well as demarcations. Demarcated areas are often indicative of a specific issue causing pain and discomfort to an athlete. Cups can show us a color-coded map of the tissue and where to work specifically to free athletes from nagging discomfort. Any possible resulting cup marks tell a story whether the stagnation is from a new or old issue. If there is not an issue in the area being worked, no stagnation or cup mark will be created.”

Nevelus says when she’s working with athletes, “this information can prove to be very useful.” “With this information, I can work efficiently and effectively at addressing their issues. My goal is to keep them injury free and on the playing field,” she says. “I have effectively done this for seven years with Adam Jones, centerfielder of the Baltimore Orioles. Athletes like him get the value the addition of this modality brings, to keep them injury free and meet the demands of professional sports.” Dr. Michele Louiselle of the Center of Integrated Medicine in Lakewood Ranch wants people to know that the ancient healing practice is still used today because it is effective. “It’s a very old therapy used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and other Asian cultures for a variety of issues … most commonly used for releasing acute and or chronic pain syndromes” and among those, she treats myriad conditions. “Cupping can be used for any kind of pain syndrome no matter the location or length of time that the condition has existed,” Louiselle says. “We can also use cupping to rid the body of sicknesses such as a cold or the flu, the quicker you treat the faster it resolves,” she says. “From an energetic standpoint, we can use cupping to bring energy to an area or we can also use it to remove energy from an area.” And, a new trend, Louiselle says, is cupping on the “face as a form of facial rejuvenation and anti-aging.”
30 SEPTEMBER | OCTOBER 2016
Dr. Ricardo Morales, who has been practicing acupuncture, herbal medicine, homeopathic and vitamin injections, guasha, and cupping in Sarasota for nearly 13 years, says he treats people with acupuncture and cupping, and sometimes a combination of both. And each employ “the same treatment principles,” Morales says. “Helping to increase blood flow, removes blood stagnation and blood toxicity,” he says. Morales says that while “many people don’t really know much about cupping,” he has been asked for the treatment and often will recommend it to patients. He too agrees that despite the fact that cupping seems “trendy now,” it’s an ancient healing art, like acupuncture, that is not a phase or a trend, rather is a process for healing that is here to stay. Indeed, the list of ailments helped by cupping is a long one, according to CuppingResouce.com, who claim cupping can treat just about anything from arthritis and blood disorders to skin conditions and varicose veins, anxiety and depression to respiratory conditions and toothache. But the Cupping Resource website makes sure to include a disclaimer stating its claims have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration and the information it provides is “not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease or health condition.” Seek out highly trained and skilled practitioners like Nevelus, Morales and Louiselle all practiced and in the modality and work safely and professionally addressing individual conditions best treated by cupping.

umbers don’t lie. Or do they? Using a scale to weigh yourself and then relying on that number to gauge your progress may be detrimental. Weight fluctuates during the day, sometimes by several pounds. Your weight on a scale isn’t static. Sometimes that scale lies a bit, especially if it isn’t calibrated properly and since weight fluctuates, the numbers often don’t represent what’s happening with your body. And many of us check our weight on different scales; the one at home, the one at the gym, or any number of other locations (think friend’s house, doctor’s office, etc.) and each scale will vary slightly.
N
There’s a battalion of weight loss experts, nutritionists, and personal trainers that say surrender the scale, really, just ditch it completely. For a time, anyway. “So many times my clients get caught up in what the scale says and not to how they feel,” says Jill A. Greber, a certified health coach and Global Director Take Shape for Life. “When looking to lose weight it is not normal to see the scale go down every day and if you are fixated on it you can get frustrated and give up.” What often happens when one begins a weight loss program, water weight is the first to be shed and the scale reflects that but that weight can fluctuate greatly and while your clothes may be feeling a bit looser as your diet progresses, the scale may be telling a different story. “I coach my clients to only weigh themselves once a week and to look for what we call ‘non-scale victories,’” Greber says. “These are things like your clothes fitting loser, you chose a healthy snack over a fatty sugary one, you said no to the 32 SEPTEMBER | OCTOBER 2016

doughnuts at work. Maybe you parked far away from the door when shopping, or you added another glass of water to your daily intake. You get the picture, these small and valuable daily healthy habits add up.” Michelle Powell, weight loss and lifestyle coach at Whole Self Weight Loss, suggests clients not focus on the scale. “I do encourage my clients to abstain from weighing too often at home and would prefer they weigh once a week here at the clinic for several reasons,” she says. “The scale does fluctuate from day to day and, for some, that leads to mind games, frustration and, self-sabotage. I explain that the scale is only part of the equation and is only one way to measure progress.” Powell says there are other, and often better, ways to gauge weight loss. “The tape measure, clothing fit, body composition analysis, energy and activity level and overall health improvements are all measures of progress and success as well,” she says.

“So many times my clients get caught up in what the scale says and not to how they feel. When looking to lose weight it is not normal to see the scale go down every day and if you are fixated on it you can get frustrated and give up.”– Jill A. Greber Powell shares her own story as a way to inspire, motivate and educate. “As a formerly obese person myself, I can definitely say that I felt really bad about the number on the scale when I’d reached 210 pounds. I was very unhealthy (with) diagnoses of pre-diabetes, metabolic syndrome, high cholesterol, and fibromyalgia among other things. Many of my clients are suffering with health problems that are considered ‘weight-related’ when, in my opinion and experience, they are actually dietary lifestyle-related,” she shares. “In other words, I believe excess weight, obesity are more the symptom than the source of the problem,” she says. “Early in my weight loss journey, before losing the majority of the excess weight I carried, all of those ailments went away. Due to majorly changing my dietary habits, my body felt better before it began to ‘look’ better. Eventually, finding out which foods caused inflammation, and thus illness, for me was crucial, which is why we now offer a food intolerance test for someone doing their very best to eat ‘healthy’ and are still struggling to lose the weight. Being dedicated to my lifestyle change has enabled me to stay healthy and keep my weight where I want it.” Powell says that “in addition to weight loss on the scale, my clients report their NSVs (non-scale victories): better energy; no more bloating; clearer skin; lower blood pressure and blood sugar; improved lab results; medication dose changes or cessation by their doctors. All of those things, in addition to a smaller number on the scale, spell success to us.”

Build A Better Bootie
34 SEPTEMBER | OCTOBER 2016
f you have a flat butt, chances are it’ll remain flat. Blame your genetics. But you don’t have to surrender completely. There are workouts and very specific glute exercises that can help make that posterior a little rounder and firmer, and while maybe not beautifully bulbous like those found on women with the natural gift of a round, firm, and stand-out bottom, you can help yourself achieve a bit more definition. And for those with already-there booty’s but need some toning, these tips are for you, too.
I
Let’s start with some basic anatomy. Three main muscles make up that booty: gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and gluteus minimus, with the maximus, being the largest muscle in the body. These muscles function to in part help extend and rotate the hip joint and the thigh. Genetics and the body’s panniculus adiposus (the superficial layer of fatty tissue) determine the shape and look of a derriere but any exercise that works and/or stretches the glutes can help to define that caboose. Besides the aesthetics of having a round, pert and firm posterior, one thing is for sure: the more you sit the more your glutes atrophy making common movements more difficult, like climbing stairs. So cute cakes aside, you need those muscles strong and healthy. So let’s work it. According to BodyBuildingWizard.com, glute exercises consist of two types, compound and isolation, the former involve many muscle and joint groups and the latter engage one muscle or joint group. And so there are myriad exercises that are perfect for glutes including all types of squats, and all manner of deadlifts and lunges. Others to consider incorporating are lateral shuffles, kettlebell swings, frog hops with or without dumbbells, heavy kick-backs and all types of step-ups. Daemian Mains, AFAA certified trainer and co-owner of Definition Fit, knows a thing or three about working those buns. Daemian says that while knowing a bit about basic anatomy and kinesiology is fine and also being aware that, as she says “if you come from a long line of flat butt folks, you are not

going to ever have a Kim Kardashian rear,” but adds quickly: “Who cares? You can shape what you have into a perfect peach if you are willing to work for it and eat right,” she says. “There are literally thousands of ‘butt moves’ videos on YouTube and Instagram and how do you know which ones are good and bad,” she asks. “It takes experience and some trial and error and in my 20-plus years as a personal trainer, I have found a few favorites.”
Her top six moves are:

Squats Leg Press – Double and single leg are great. Lunges – Proper alignment and form varies based on the type of lunge Deadlifts – A great exercise done stiff legged, traditional or single leg. Seated Hip Abduction – Leaning forward and straight back Cable – Leg kick-backs and hip abduction.
“I also love using ankle weights and doing my Jane Fonda or Tracy Anderson-inspired target tush moves. When I am home I do 200-500 reps of small moves to strengthen and build three times per week,” she says adding that exercise won’t help much if junk and fast food are your thing. “Diet is very important,” she stresses. “A bad diet gives you a fat butt but not necessarily a shapely one. A clean diet based on your body caloric need is also the key to a nice looking backside. Do the best with what you've got and treat your body like a temple. You will have that perfect beach bum by the time summer is over and you'll still be able to fit in those skinny jeans come fall.”

Improve Your Fitness With
Magnesium by James Steadman
hen it comes to supplement nutrients for athletes, one element in particular stands out for strength, power, hormone balancing, body composition and recovery: magnesium.
W
Magnesium is an essential nutrient that today is in shorter supply in the body than ever before due to factors such as pesticides on plants, depleted soil stores, and extensive food processing. Whereas 100 years ago an average person might have consumed 500 mg of magnesium daily in their food, today that number has dropped to about 175 mg. For athletes, that means oxidation stress increases as this important electrolyte is not as available to the body as it might have been in the past. Magnesium is mostly found in bones (50 percent of the body's supply), soft tissues (25 percent) and muscle (15 percent). Only about 1 percent of the body's magnesium is found in the blood. It's believed that magnesium regulates insulin sensitivity and blood pressure as well as delivering oxygen to muscles and sustaining muscle contractions; therefore, this nutrient gets depleted quickly as your body is doing all these things as it undergoes training. Magnesium allows protein-synthesizing enzymes to function, helping the body's muscles to develop. Research has shown that magnesium deficiency compromises athletes' performance. Typically, this happens during bouts of dieting common in such sports as boxing, judo and wrestling. At least one study concluded that lower magnesium intake among volleyball, handball and basketball players resulted in a reduction of their jumping performance, grip strength, rotational ability and dynamic and maximal isometric strength. If you have less-than-optimal magnesium intake, chances are good you'll experience less-than-peak performance and not be able to realize maximum muscle gains.
38 SEPTEMBER | OCTOBER 2016
FIT941.COM
Another study on magnesium related specifically to vertical jumping in volleyball competitors and players in other sports: the athletes in the study were able to increase the height of their jumps by roughly 3 cm by taking a 350 mg dose of magnesium daily for 4 weeks. The researchers conducting the study believe that magnesium is a key cofactor for producing enzymes used in energy metabolism. In the aforementioned study, supplementing magnesium allowed the athletes to produce more energy during actions of high intensity and short duration, sometimes known as explosive movements. Hormone balance is also important for athletes, both in performance and during recovery. Magnesium is associated with higher testosterone levels, which in turn have been shown to produce greater strength and endurance. They're also important for performance readiness and competitive drive. Higher testosterone — often referred to simply as "T" — produces a greater chance of winning athletic events in both men and women. Some testosterone in the body can be made inactive by the protein SHBG. But magnesium binds with SHBG to allow more active, or free, testosterone to circulate. This gives the body better athletic performance and better composition relating to the balance between fat and muscle. Magnesium also helps with insulin sensitivity, which is important for the metabolism of carbohydrates. Without metabolizing carbs, you will gain body fat and not be able to build muscle as effectively. Magnesium will help you stay lean while building muscle mass. Finally, magnesium is great for your body's recovery from a taxing workout. Recovery is enabled by magnesium via the metabolism of cortisol, a hormone which reduces sympathetic nervous system activation. The more magnesium you have, the faster your body can return to its normal, relaxed state. It has a calming effect on the body's nervous system and is known as an "anti-stress" mineral. When less magnesium is available to the body, it gets less-deep sleep, and you end up with more nighttime awakenings. Magnesium helps restore glycogen levels and produce needed red blood cells. It also helps your body process waste that's the by-product of intense exercise. Lastly, magnesium is associated with glutathione, a natural antioxidant that your body produces for health and anti-inflammation.
FEEL THE
RESULTS!
It's recommended that you consume at least 3 mg of magnesium for each pound of body weight you have; if you weigh 170 pounds, that's a dosage of 510 mg for one day. A diet high in fiber will necessitate higher amounts because magnesium attaches to the material, inhibiting the element's absorption in the digestive process. If you want to test your body's magnesium levels, a magnesium loading test is best, but they're often expensive; instead, consider a red blood cell test, which can be performed by your doctor. For most adults, a good range for the element is 4 to 6.8 mg per deciliter.

Expanding So You Don’t Have To By Ellyn Santiago

efinition Fit, the downtown Sarasota fitness fixture, is expanding both its space and its client’s options. Still located at 1471 5th St., Def Fit is increasing its footprint, virtually doubling its size, enabling the gym to expand its current offering and variety of classes, increase personal training space, separate and apart from group classes, which means space for several new trainers and “lots of new clients.”
D
And as if that wasn't enough, Def Fit is adding a plethora of new, functional training and athletic training equipment including the Isophit, the this-changes-everything cutting-edge, carefully-researched and developed exercise system that its creators say works more than 650 muscles by “harnessing scientifically proven benefits
of Isometric strength training in a way that’s never been done before.”
at Def Fit, which is soon to celebrate its seventh year.
Def Fit co-owners Daemian Mains and David Weiner say the Isophit, which is unique to Sarasota, uses principles of isometric training and can be used alongside the trademarked Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT) system performed by certified specialists.
“I’m thrilled that Def Fit is introducing these groundbreaking strength and conditioning protocol to the Sarasota athletic community,” Weiner says. “Young or old, weekend warrior or fitness addict, we all can benefit from having our muscles and bodies function at an optimal level. MAT and Isophit are incredibly effective tools to help us all bring our ‘A’ game.”
According to Weiner and Mains, “MAT and Isophit work hand in hand to prevent injury, increase muscle contractibility and strength, and help remove limitations an individual might be experiencing in their respective athletic or exercise endeavors.” Weiner says the expansion, coupled with the state-of-the-art fitness technology, is making for an exciting time

of new equipment and new certifications, we will keep offering cutting edge training techniques built on solid foundations. I love each and every one of our clients and I am grateful for everything this gym has become. I look forward to the future with my Def Fit family.” Classes at Def Fit run the gamut including Total Body Conditioning, TRX Power, Athletic Performance Training, HIIT MIX, Extreme Circuit, and also offers Dani Williams’ popular NXT Generation youth fitness program (Please see on story page 46). And now, with the Isophit and MAT, Def Fit is the absolute fitness authority in Sarasota. Weiner, an Ironman triathlete, has always been an athlete; from halfmarathons to tennis. And as a longtime personal trainer, his philosophy and style is based on helping clients achieve optimal performance and their full potential “no matter your starting point.”
will compensate to complete the task at hand,” Weiner says. “Compensation can lead to injury. I use MAT to identify those imbalances and create stability, and then reinforce that stability with the Isophit and dynamic exercise. If you have an opportunity to have your body functioning at an optimal level, why wouldn't you do it?" Mains, an AFAA certified personal and group trainer, has been in fitness for more than 20 years, from teaching cardio boxing at the YMCA to training for her second International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) competition this year. She started fitness training while earning her degree
at University of Florida and she continued training at the Sarasota YMCA for several years after. And Mains has been a World Beauty and Fashion Fitness (WBFF) competitor three times and in her last show, she won 2nd place in the 35-plus category and 3rd place in the open category. She says she uses her experience to help clients “get in their best shape ever.” Located at 1489 5th St., in Downtown Sarasota, at Def Fit, the first class is always free for locals. breathe in fully sending the sternum to the ceiling by extending the spine upward from the low back. This opens the spine and elongates through the abdominals. Allow the shoulders to widen and drop.
❸ Horizontal extension: Begin exhaling, lean forward from the sitz bones as you lengthen your spine, maintaining the same extension with your back, before retracting into a curl. Simultaneously ground the legs downwards before retracting the low back.
❹ Curl (flexion): Finished exhaling while undulating
through the spine and opening up the back while strengthening the abdominals. Roll back behind the sitz (sitting) bones, before beginning a new inhale. The Gyrotonic Method utilizes a machine that aides in lengthening and strengthening the spinal motions with the help of circular handles. Each of the positions are supported by the breath.
❺ While sitting on the Gyrotonic Pulley Tower, begin the
inhalation from your neutral spine further grounding your feet. Press down on the handles to help extend the crown of your head toward the ceiling.
❻ Inhale fully supporting the extension of the spine while pressing downward more on the handles to lengthen the spine upwards.
❼ Begin to exhale using the “Ha” sound. Move the handles forward, keeping the arch shape in your back to help extend and further strengthen the spine.
❽ Eyes delay looking down as you retract back with the
abdominals and complete exhaling. Rolling back behind the sitz bones, begin to undulate up through the spine, beginning a new inhale. GYROTONIC® & GYROKINESIS® are registered trademarks of Gyrotonic Sales Corp and are used with their permission.

A 'Food Fix' I chose my favorite salad from my menu at Word Of Mouth. The "superfood" salad is my favorite. I try to eat healthy, but at the same time, have been lifting heavy in the gym for years, and usually feel like a bear coming out of hibernation after a gym session. This salad has everything I need. The vegetable benefits of this salad are obvious, but I also like the antioxidant properties of the ingredients as well. We serve this salad with a pomegranate dressing, but I like it better with our house made Balsamic vinaigrette. It also comes with a choice of fresh baked muffin, scone, croissant, or artisan bread. It has a high amount of "good" fats in it from the egg and guacamole. I need to eat as many "good" calories as I can, so I also tend to add a grilled chicken breast to it. There's not much to fix about this salad. If I was looking for a strict clean food option, I might leave out the guacamole, the chicken, and possibly the egg. I would certainly trade the muffin for the rustic 9 grain artisan bread, which is also gluten free. It just depends how far you want to go...

by Ellie Mae Johnson he ancients Celts celebrated the end of harvest season with a festival then called Samhain, now known as Halloween. They used the festival, in part, to “take stock and prepare for winter.” Sounds like a good time to prepare the body for winter, too (although in the 941 we can hardly claim to have to hunker down when our average temps are in the 60s and 70s, but anyway…), by taking, as the Irish might call it, a ‘good stretch of the legs’ and in costume, no less, to scare off those Samhain spirts.

School Days Fitness By Ellyn Santiago
lot is going on at the beginning of the school year. The transition from summer isn’t always easy. For starters, readjusting schedules has likely been a chore since kids often stay up later and sleep in during summer.
A
And there’s the transition back to academia in general. Researchers and educators have known for decades that kids forget a lot of what they’ve learned during the summer. In fact, research shows they score lower on standardized tests following summer break then they scored before their holiday. One way to overcome this is to power up the brain with exercise. Fit.WebMD. com says any exercise that gets kids hearts pumping and makes them sweat, basically anything aerobic, is the kind of workout that helps power the brain by supplying blood and oxygen and helps the body create natural chemicals that help brain cell growth.
Williams, who in addition to being a certified elementary special education teacher is an International Sports Science Association-certified youth fitness coach and international Kidding Around Yogacertified kid’s yoga instructor, is the owner of Next Generation Fitness and Wellness. For many in the 941, Williams is the face of youth fitness. And she says that even though kids have played all summer long, back to school fitness is important.
So bottom line, kids who exercise are more likely to stay focused in school and perform better academically.
“According to Active Living Research, there is a significant amount of growing evidence that states participation in physical fitness leads towards better brain health, enhanced concentration, as well as increased academic performance in the immediate and for long term,” she says. “Kids deserve to be given ample opportunities to set themselves up for success. In my eyes, the more exercise, the better.”
Elementary educator and certified youth fitness coach Dani Williams says it’s important to get kids motivated.
Williams says there are a number of options for families in preparing kids for a great school year.

“It all depends on the goals that are set by the child and parent. Every child is wired differently, therefore, may need varying avenues for success,” she says. “Each program offers distinct benefits. For example, a group class may offer a structured and upbeat team-based environment, whereas a one-on-one session may concentrate more on fundamental skills, emotional development, and mindset.” Williams says that, as an educator, she believes it is necessary to be fully aware of each individual's strengths, capabilities, and what path(s) they need to take in order to become their most successful self. All kids have different learning styles, motivations, goals, obstacles, and fears. When working with kids in a fitness
