But setting goals and keeping them are two different things. Our New Year’s Resolutions feature story offers some great tips and ideas to help you stay on track and nutritionist Bonni London certainly gives us food for thought.
And because 2016 was a tumultuous year and one to remember, well, you never know, we have a fun (and actually pretty serious) feature on how to survive a zombie apocalypse or just being lost in the woods. Think the Boy Scout motto: ‘Be prepared.’ No, really.

So for some it means getting rid of the few pounds added during the past serval weeks of festivities and getting back on track. For that, check out our ‘Get Back to Lean’ feature. For others, it means losing much more than a few pounds, and for those who need inspiration and motivation, just read about Eddie Santiago, our Jan-Feb Success Story. Maybe you need a new butt-kicking workout to start the New Year off right. We’ve got you. Our article ‘AssKicking Workouts’ should help you get moving. Or maybe your goal is to just really eat better, to embrace healthy eating. We’ve got that covered too with an article on smoothies and a handful of delicious and super good for you recipes chock full of super foods. So start blending! Also, check out the really smart piece in our Enhance department written by Lee McGowan of Richard’s Foodporium about supplements to help detoxify and boost recovery, another tool to help kick-start your New Year’s goal.
And talk about what’s smoking hot right now in the fitness world, or in this case really cool, cryotherapy is everywhere and everyone is talking about the seemingly endless list of benefits. Our cover feature story ‘Cryotherapy is Super Chill,’ traces the history of whole body cryotherapy, looks at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' use of the ‘cold cure’ and features interviews with owners from myriad venues, gyms to wellness centers, massage therapy studios to rejuvenation centers, who now feature whole body cryotherapy chambers.

SAAKA Athlete Soars

nnovative Sarasota-based sweatband manufacturer, SAAKA, whose products are created for everyone but especially for fitness enthusiasts and athletes, sponsors local ultra-runner Claire Kelley. Claire, of 360 Degree Health, was born with clubfoot. When she was young, doctors said she’d be lucky to be able to walk, and that running was out of the question. Claire decided to prove them wrong, and she did. Claire has been running for over 15 years and beginning in 2016, Claire crossed over into the world of ultra-running, which is defined as running 31 miles or more per race. Claire set a goal for herself to complete 16 Ultras in 2016 and on Dec. 11, she accomplished this goal by completing her 16th Ultra when she finished 100 miles at ‘The Daytona 100.’ SAAKA, whose myriad sweat-reduction products and gear uses a cutting edge moisture-management system designed to remove sweat and keep athletes at peak performance, is proud to sponsor Claire and is inspired by her dedication. A
meriprise Financial has continued its longtime support of the Sarasota YMCA’s Youth Shelter with a $5,000 grant.
The Y Youth Shelter provides temporary housing and safe care for Southwest Florida youth ages 10 to 17 who have run away, are experiencing family conflict or have been locked out of their homes. Pro Basketball Comes to 941
T
he recently-founded Sarasota Manatee professional basketball team puts the 941 on the court thanks to tech entrepreneur Andre Spivey and partner Mike Pitts, a longtime basketball trainer.
Started just five months ago, in August of 2016, the Sarasota Manatee team is part of the professional men’s basketball league, the American Basketball Association (ABA). The ABA, originally established in 1967, merged with the NBA in 1976 with such powerhouse players as Julius Irving and Moses Malone and many others that ended up as NBA players. The ABA was reformed in 2000 in partnership with the NBA. Andre says that while some players for the semi-pro league are recruited globally, “We have found great talent in the area.” “Unlike most ABA teams, we are focused on local talent rather than pulling from overseas,” Andre says. The Sarasota Manatee team played its first games in December and its schedule includes dates though March including the Southwest Warriors Jamboree and the Florida All-Stars and a full slate of games are set for fall 2017. For more information about the team, visit ManateeBasketball.com.

Eddie Santiago
E
ddie Santiago was 425 pounds when he made a lifechanging decision.
“I was getting sick and tired of being sick and tired,” Eddie says now. He had high blood pressure, sleep apnea, and he says, was “uncomfortable in my own body.” Plus, he wanted to find “someone special” to share his life with and raise a family. “How was a good woman going to even like me, let alone have kids with me? I wanted a family; kids to have their dad, healthy and full of life so I could see them grow and have their own kids.” So Eddie committed to losing weight. He accomplished that, he says, by changing his lifestyle, eating right, incorporating cardio and weight training and trusting the process.” Eddie was determined. Today Eddie weighs 255 pounds having shed 170 pounds. “It wasn’t easy, but anything worth having is never easy.” And his success convinced him to give up his longtime career in the mortgage business and since he was always “great in sales,” began a new career in selling gym memberships. “People were actually inspired because I was living proof that it can be done. I was a walking billboard on what proper nutrition and workout program can do for you.” Eddie’s best advice for folks trying to lose weight is simple. “You have to have patience, you have to trust the process, and you must never give up,” Eddie says. “Nothing will change until you change it.”

he Super Sprint Triathlon Team Relay Challenge and Individual Super Sprint Challenge is slated for March 26, 2017 at Nathan Benderson Park. A Hiit series presented by Advanced Sports and Wellness, The highintensity team challenge event is an opportunity for gyms, clubs and wellness franchises to compete against one another with only one team crowned champion. Organizers say this is “no ordinary triathlon.” Teams consist of two men and two women. This mixed relay format is “new and is by far the most thrilling, exciting, and fast paced sport to participate in and to watch,” organizers say. Each athlete completes a high intensity sprint triathlon of swimming, biking and running, before tagging off to their next teammate. “It's non-stop action from the very beginning. The pace is to the extreme and is survival of the fittest,” according to organizers. A gym can have as many teams as they like but switching members once each have signed up is not permitted. Each participant will have a chip and will have to conquer this high intensity 200-yard swim sprint, then an all-out 4-mile bike ride, then finish “with everything they have left in a mad” 1.5 mile run to tag their teammate at the finish line. The team relay begins at 10 a.m. The individual race, which begins at 8 a.m., is open to the public from age 16 and up and is also a Super Sprint Triathlon. The individual race is “great for people who are trying their very first triathlon, or just want a great workout and love to compete.” The individual race will include age groups for men and women, determined by the number of participants and their ages. Medals will be given to the top three male and female in each age bracket. A post event party is slated with food, drink and entertainment. The event will benefit Suncoast Aquatic Nature Center Associates, Inc. To learn more and to register go to swfbattleofthegyms.com. IBE Barter: Grow a Healthy Bottom … Line Clear Your Head, Rock Your Body
W
hether or not you get to the gym three or four times a week, eat healthy and even have a personal trainer, often results can be “slow to none,” says Life Coach Allie Chambers.
T
he health of the local economy is being strengthened through the use of International Barter Exchange (IBE Barter), a “private currency; the IBE business community uses IBE currency to create commerce,” says director Mary J. Unger. Unger says IBE Barter can help make a business “lean and profitable, while making your cash reserves fat by helping business owners grow a healthy bottom line by stimulating new and additional plus business.” Barter income is the same as cash income with no tax advantages or disadvantages; rather it’s a marketing tool. The way it works: An hotelier has 10 vacant $100-per night rooms and needs a $1,000 copier. Barter provides the opportunity to buy the copier, fill those rooms at cost while holding on to your cash. “And IBE helps you build, strengthen and enrich your business by increasing your exposure,” Mary explains. “Exercise your ability to move your company forward by profiting through the power of exchange and expand your cash reserves by using your earned IBE Currency, in place of cash.” The mantra at IBE Barter is ‘build, grow, and barter with IBE.’ IBE Barter has more than 800 local businesses and there are some 500,000 business members in the network with myriad goods and services including media, advertising, travel and accommodations, professional services, restaurants, health and wellness services and many, many more. For more information, visit IbeBarter.com or call 941-955-6100.

“Sometimes, what is holding you back are seemingly unrelated issues in your life, ones that are perhaps blocking your path to fitness success,” she suggests. But Allie has the solution: she partners with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that helps them overcome their unease, stress, worries, or concerns while inspiring their personal and professional potential, she says. As a Sarasota-based life coach, personal trainer and motivational speaker, Allie is a lifestyle strategist who motivates, educates and inspires people to live the life of their dreams. Her process includes an initial 60 to 90 minute session where Allie and the client discuss goals and potential obstacles and she’ll outline the steps needed to achieve those goals. The ‘Art’ of a Boxer
A
fter 15 years in the ring, with an impressive 17 wins in 20 ring match-ups held in Florida, Germany, Texas, and other locations, Sarasota’s Aaron Jaco will box his last professional fight this spring. “One more, then done; like a curtain call to feel that excitement one more time,” says the super middle-weight owner of Uppercut, which will be celebrating a decade of training and helping keep folks fit in the 941.
But he’s not leaving the art of boxing because art has always been as close to his heart. “I have been into art since I was a young boy,” Aaron says. “My father saw my talent at a very young age and always pushed me to do more.” And while Aaron won numerous art contests and exhibitions and attended the Booker High School of the Visual Arts, he admits, “I hated it.” But that didn’t stop him from painting, he just picked up a brush between boxing as an amateur and pro and then, opening and running a successful gym. When his daughter was born in 2007, it was her artistic curiosity that really got him back into painting. “I don’t think I have a particular style at all. I enjoy painting things I'm passionate about, my daughter, my wife (Heather, also his partner at Uppercut) and boxing photos and icons are always cool,” he says of his work, all large canvasses of about four feet by four feet. Aaron has sold a number of his paintings and ruminates that painting may be his “second career.” To see more of his artwork, follow Aaron on Instagram @aaronjacoart and for more information about Uppercut visit uppercutboxingsarasota.com.

he Sarasota YMCA Sharks Swim Team was recently ranked as 6th in nation by the USA Swimming Club Excellence program. In its 16th year, the Club Excellence program identifies clubs that execute strong, well-rounded programs to produce elite 18-and-under athletes. The top 20 clubs earn Gold level ranking.
“Earning Gold, Silver or Bronze ranking is a reflection of the hard work and time invested by athletes and coaches and has become a highly coveted honor for our teams. Each year, the competition to earn a Club Excellence ranking continues to be more and more challenging.” said Pat Hogan, USA Swimming’s Club Development Managing Director. In addition to recognizing high-performing teams, the program provides grant funding that enable clubs to expand and enhance the services already provided to athletes. A total of $450,000 in grants will be distributed to the 100 Gold- and Silver-level clubs. And the Sarasota Sharks were named to the very elite Podium Club reserved for teams that have achieved Gold four years in a row. That means the Sharks are eligible for additional grants monies. Congratulations to the Sarasota Sharks! For more information about the Sharks, visit SarasotaSharks.org

ORTHOPEDIC EXCELLENCE
The SPD Training Unit thought it was important to start a group that focused on the overall wellness of the officer, incorporating both physical and mental fitness, Morrison says. “In this time of policing it is of the upmost importance to keep our police officers in the best possible physical and mental shape possible,” he says. “It is also equally important to show the community we serve that we are a committed partner with them.”

Morrison says the SPD Endurance Club, with 20 members to date, can promote both of these messages by showing that "we are fit for duty and are more than willing to volunteer/participate" in races and events that often promote community non-profits organizations such as the Wounded Warrior Project, American Cancer Society, Special Olympics, and the Susan G. E
asy and effective, Juvent’s Micro-Impact Platform® is an effective solution that promotes musculoskeletal health, joint pain relief, and improved balance. About the size and shape of a large bathroom scale, Juvent sends low-magnitude mechanical impulses passively exercising bones and muscles while increasing blood flow. Once on the machine, a user will feel a subtle, pleasant stimulation starting at the feet and legs, then extending upwards to the torso, arms, and upper body. Creators say if the machine is used 10 to 20 minutes, three days a week, it’s been “shown to help improve blood flow, ease joint, knee and back pain and increase stability.”
Henry Sailes
H
enry Sailes was just 8 when he began playing football. In high school, he not only remained on the field, but added track to his roster of sports. In fact, he was awarded a full scholarship to play college football at Tennessee Tech University. Henry graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in exercise science, physical education and wellness. “I have always been into fitness and weight training,” Henry says adding that fitness and athletics has had a profound influence on his life. “Athletics and fitness both gave me an outlet to relieve frustrations, anger, along with helping to gain a competitive edge,” he says, plus, “that feeling you have after a high intensity workout” has helped him greatly. “What amazes me the most about fitness is that it helps with confidence and selfesteem, brings joy, relieves stress and keeps you healthy.” Henry is a certified CrossFit Level 1 trainer who also competes competitively in CrossFit. “I've always been trainer since I was teenager, but I stared to take personal training seriously when I went to college,” Henry says. “Everyone would ask me for guidance on how to do certain exercises.” The response he received from others was not only an affirmation, but motivated him tremendously. “I became so passionate, especially about the results I helped others obtain; I became more obsessed with the outcome,” Henry says. And that level of commitment to his craft has him in the best possible shape and inspires his clients and peers.
Benefits include joint pain relief, better bone health, balance and circulation as well as increased energy and joint range of motion. The Juvent is sold, among other places, on the National Osteoporosis Foundation website. It is also used at the Sarasota FYZICAL Therapy and Balance Center location. Experience Sarasota’s Historic Bobby Jones Golf Course
I
n December of 1885, John Hamilton Gillespie landed in the small fishing village of Sarasota, his hickory golf sticks from Scotland with him. Six months after he arrived, Gillespie built a “two-hole golfing ground” near what is now Main Street and Ringling Boulevard. So while several communities across the country claim to be the home of golf, it’s very likely Sarasota is the true ‘cradle of golf.’
The original 18-hole Bobby Jones Golf Club in Sarasota was designed in 1925. Named for the legendary golfer Robert Tyre Jones, Jr., who dedicated the facility in 1927, over the next several decades additional holes were added and now the 45hole city-owned course has had golfers from across the globe tee up there since. And if you have not golfed there, now is a great time with myriad specials available for American Course Par 71, British Course Par 72, and Executive Course Par 30 with special rates now through the end of March from $28 to 48 per round with cart and green fees included. The Bobby Jones Golf Club is located at 1000 Circus Blvd., in Sarasota. Call 941-365-4653 or visit BobbyJonesGolfClub. com for more information.

ocal reports indicate that the Colorado-based boutique grocer Lucky’s Market, which provides “organic for the 99 percent,” may be moving to Sarasota’s Westfield Southgate plaza in late 2017. Lucky’s Market’s anthem is: “At Lucky’s, we love good food. Not just natural and organic food, but the food that’s so much a part of our fondest memories. The good stuff. It’s just that somehow so much of the good stuff has become really expensive. Sold in stores that act like they’re doing you a big fat favor bringing it to you. And maybe they are, but they shouldn’t act like it. That’s why we started Lucky’s Market. We believe good food shouldn’t be a luxury, it should be a right. If you don’t want to eat things like pesticides, antibiotics and growth hormones, you shouldn’t have to. Natural and organic food shouldn’t be priced out of your reach. We also have the crazy notion that we shouldn’t adopt a holier-than-thou attitude if your grandma’s recipe calls for something that doesn’t fit some people’s idea of what’s good for you.” Lucky’s Market stores are found all over the country, from Colorado to Wyoming, Michigan to Ohio, Georgia to Florida and many in between. Stay tuned to Fit941 for more details, but in the meantime, check out the Lucky’s Market website at LuckysMarket.com, it is super cool.

ADVANCED REJUVENATION » by Anna Panzarinp
eginning in the late 90’s Advanced Rejuvenation started using regenerative medicine in orthopedics as an alternative to cortisone and surgery. Repairing the damage and strengthening the body was the goal first using prolothrapy and prolozone then evolving into PRP and stem cells about eight years ago. The clinic was one of the first in the country to begin using these therapies.
B
Advanced Rejuvenation is a synthesis of medical, osteopathic, chiropractic, podiatric and acupuncture practiced by highly skilled physicians and medical professionals who are reshaping regenerative medicine right here in Sarasota. These doctors have a combined 60 years of experience in regenerative medicine. “What makes us a unique facility is the collective wealth of experience we have at the center, beyond anything you have in the country,” says Dr. John Lieurance, a chiropractic neurologist with 20 years of experience with regenerative orthopedics. He is joined by an osteopath with 27 years of experience 22 JAN/FEB 2017

in orthopedic regenerative medicine, an acupuncturist who is also an MD with a decade of experience and a podiatrist who is also an orthopedic physician assistant. “We have a broad collection of professionals, all laser-focused on regenerative medicine,” Lieurance says of the staff at the multi-disciplinary clinic, which offers multiple regenerative treatment methods and procedures. “I don’t think there’s any other center that has all the different cutting edge regenerative treatment modalities.” For example, Advanced Rejuvenation offers laser therapy but, as Lieurance says, employing “a $60,000 laser, not like some places that do laser with a little $2,000 wand.” It also features a whole body cryotherapy chamber (see Cryotherapy on pages 24-27) as well as a hyperbaric oxygen chamber which, according to the Mayo Clinic, is a well-established treatment for a number of conditions and injuries. Inside the chamber, air pressure is three times higher than normal, allowing the
For those of us who are not physicians, PRP is the acronym for platelet-rich plasma, which Advanced Rejuvenation has been working with for 10 years. National Institutes of Health studies on the use of PRP have concluded it helps in the elimination of neuropathic pain by, in essence, helping the body to repair itself when it cannot otherwise do so by directly implanting the body’s powerful growth factors that normally heal damage in the body, but often cannot due to poor circulation. In addition, Advanced Rejuvenation offers a myriad of regenerative injection treatments including stem cells, PRP, prolotherapy and prolozone injections, the latter two are “both recognized orthopedic procedures that stimulate the body's healing processes to strengthen and repair injured, painful joints and connective tissue,” according to the American Osteopathic Association of Prolotherapy Regenerative Medicine. Indeed, a professional MLB pitcher who was treated by Lieurance had been told he’d never throw like he once did following a shoulder injury. After six prolotherapy injections over the course of three months, he was not only pain-free but his pitching speed was “back up to the low 90s,” adding that prolotherapy changed his life. At Advanced Rejuvenation, the medical staff is able to repair, with non-surgical orthopedic regenerative therapy, the root cause of many orthopedic conditions from osteoarthritis of the knee, hip or shoulder or tightening or healing damages muscles and tendons such as rotator cuff tear and chronic spinal pain.
lungs to collect more oxygen, which is then transported by the blood throughout the body, energizing the release of stem cells, cells that stimulate healing. But Lieurance says he’s most excited about the procedure called ‘LumoStem.’ Only available in the U.S. at Advanced Rejuvenation, he says, studies show a “dramatic improvement in viability and multiplication of cells” with the cutting-edge German technology. “With this innovative machine, we can shine lasers inside of the body and are able to directly laser the articular surface of a joint or bring a laser probe right over damaged tissue such as a nerve root. So for example, for a herniated disc or sciatic nerve pain, instead of doing an epidural steroid, we’re able to drop a little PRP, homeopathic or even stem cells and then literally let healing laser stimulate the area,” Lieurance explains. “The results are unbelievable.”
And for inner ear problems, Advanced Rejuvenation is blazing a trail with new and exciting technologies to improve hearing, tinnitus and vertigo using Lumomed therapy. The clinic was recently featured on local ABC news affiliate, as its treatment addresses a huge unmet need in our aging population. Right now the only option for hearing loss is hearing aids, which according to doctors at Advanced Rejuvenation is only making things worse by amplifying an already loud environment, which also stresses the hair cells in the ear. Lumomed, which uses a powerful and specific laser treatment to repair inner ear damage, has been successfully used in Germany for 30 years. Advanced Rejuvenation is currently the only certified Lumomed center in the U.S. “We are a highly trained, experienced and very capable staff of medical professionals dedicated and committed to the advancement of regenerative medicine,” Lieurance says. So, ‘Where’s your pain,’ Advanced Rejuvenation asks. They can help. Advanced Rejuvenation is located at 2033 Wood Street, #201 in Sarasota. CRYOTHERAPY IS SUPER
Translated from the Greek, cryotherapy literally means the ‘cold cure.’ Likely used as early as the 1600s, it wasn’t until 1978 when the first whole body cryo chamber was introduced in Japan. But aficionados of the popular therapy can thank scientists in Poland, who in the late 1990s recognized the physical healing benefits of ‘Ganzkoperkaltetherapie’ or whole body cold therapy. Myriad research studies by European scientists have been published that validated the benefits of whole body cryotherapy for treating illnesses and injury. Physical therapists routinely employ ice to treat inflammation and pain so the leap to whole body cold therapy isn’t such a stretch. The science is solid that the ‘cold cure’ is effective, and especially so for athletes or fitness devotees use after workouts.
T
Just ask the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs purchased three cryo chambers for its players use as a “recovery edge.” The 90-member team was greeted this past summer by the newly-

installed cryo saunas at their headquarters. According to Bucs’ writer and senior editor Scott Smith, the cyro chambers are an “Advanced alternative to the cold tubs ubiquitous to every team facility. By making use of this technology, Buccaneer players can replace a 20-25 minute soak in a cold tub with a 150-second cryo session, and with ultimately much better results,” turning back the clock “on how long it takes to treat dozens of sore players.” Whole body cryotherapy (WBC) is an alternative to localized icing for illness, injury and inflammation. The treatment has people exposed to extremely cold air – negative 150°F to 250°F – for 1 to 3 minutes. The chamber (or sauna, as it’s also referred) uses either liquid nitrogen or refrigerated air. While inside the cyro machine, a person’s head is above the top of the chamber. Minimal clothing is worn; shorts or undergarments; gloves; a woolen headband to cover ears; and perhaps a nose and mouth mask. Specific garments may vary based
on client preference and the facility requirements. Garments cannot include any metal (think underwire bras!) and must be completely dry (anything wet or metal will freeze instantly.) The benefits of WBC are many. And not just for professional or elite athletes, but for everyone and anyone who has completed an intense workout, suffers with arthritis, needs help with healing after surgery, suffered an injury, requires muscular pain relief from conditions including RA and tendonitis, is looking to improve mood, experience anti-aging effects, or needs help with weight loss, among many other benefits. Dr. John Lieurance of CRYOSRQ says the WBC’s ability to convert white (void of mitochondria) fat into mitochondriarich brown fat has myriad benefits for endurance athletics and improves mental ability, fights inflammation, improves injury healing and repair and aids in weight loss when combined with the right diet, especially a ketogenic-style diet. “We find that our patients heal much faster from PRP and stem cell injection therapy and the inflammation associated with chronic arthritis seems to disappear. Neurologically we use the chamber for brain enhancement; Parkinson’s; MS; and even Alzheimer’s seem to benefit due to something called ‘cold shock portents.’ So, for those looking for a mental edge, these proteins have the ability to activate neuroplasticity or
growing and connecting various neurons together to form better function neurotically,” Lieurance claims. “Bottom line is we were meant to have periods of cold exposure in our life,” Lieurance says, adding it’s suggested clients do a series of sessions in the WBC chamber “over a period of time to get the stacking effect when looking to achieve certain health goals with WBC.” Widely used in European hospitals and physical therapy clinics since the early 1990s, WBC has become increasingly popular in the U.S., especially with athletes. Like at Advanced Rejuvenation’s CRYOSRQ, cryo saunas are popping up everywhere in the 941 and as of press time, there were at least four other venues in addition to CRYOSRQ featuring (or slated to be featuring) cryo chambers and saunas including Hydr8, GYM SRQ, The Athlete’s Room and BluFit Recovery & Nutrition. At CRYOSRQ, Lieurance says, “We have developed specific protocols with the chamber to treat various conditions and goals for our patients. “The WBC is a great adjective therapy and can enhance other modalities,” Lieurance says. “Our chamber is also run by a paramedic in a medical office with primary care physicians monitoring the treatments.” CRYOSRQ (Advanced Rejuvenation) is located at 2033 Wood St., Suite 210, in Sarasota. To learn more, or to schedule a session call 941-777-4242 or visit CRYOSRQ.com. At HYDR8 owners say their venue is the only one in Sarasota with the Impact XL cryotherapy machine. Hydr8 introduced the machine on Facebook Live in late November and as of press time, more than 120 “athletes and everyday people” have tried out Hydr8’s cryo chamber, co-owner Fernando Vega says. In fact, in one day, Hyrd8 provided 42 cryo sessions for clients, many of whom posted their experience on social media with the hashtag #FeelTheDifference. Vega says the majority of clients so far are “buying packages, they feel that good.” “People have done their research and they know what it does,” he says. “Cryo reduces inflammation, speeds recovery, reduces recovery time drastically, and increases collagen production for healthier skin,” he explains. “Women that have experienced it say, ‘My skin feels so good.’ People that come in stressed, exhausted, especially after an intense workout, use our machine and the next morning they wake up refreshed and happy.” And Vega says some clients have used the machine to assist with pain management “as an alternative so they can get off their pain medications.” Being sure to point out that the Impact cryotherapy whole body chamber does not “cure” rather “it helps,” Vega says his partner, an MD, has himself seen results.
FIT941.COM
JAN/FEB 2017 25
Co-owner Dr. Christopher Newcomb “is in the Impact XL machine every two days. He has a bad ankle; he needs surgery but this reduces inflammation so he’s able to go out and run with his dog now,” Vega says. The Impact XL cryotherapy machine used at Hyrd8 has been evaluated by the FDA, which concluded the sauna is not a medical device and isn’t intended to cure or prevent disease or chronic illness. Vega says that the Impact machine Hydr8 features is the only one even evaluated by the FDA and “that’s important, plus it’s built in the U.S.A., not Russia.” Plus, Vega says, “We own the exclusivity in Sarasota and Bradenton and plan to buy five more machines.” He says locations are planned for Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch and South Sarasota. And Vega and Newcomb recently appeared on local TV to speak about the benefits of WBC. Newcomb stressed that while the cryo sauna is “not a medical device,” it’s nonetheless being widely used by athletes from amateur to professional. “It’s exploding,” Newcomb says. HYDR8 is located at 1539 2nd St. in Sarasota. Call 866-223-8707 or email rsvp@wehydr8you.com to book a WBC cyro sauna appointment or visit WeHydr8You.com for more information. Bryan Lieberman, managing partner at GYM SRQ Fitness & Fuel, says the whole body cryotherapy experience at Sarasota’s newest gym will be an unparalleled one: “Everybody is pretty excited about it.” “We can't wait for ours to arrive to offer our members and guests another service to assist in workout recovery and bringing inflammation down in the body,” Lieberman says adding that sessions in the cryo sauna have an added bonus: “It can burn up to 500 calories per use.” GYMSRQ’s cyro sauna chamber is expected to arrive in January. “We cannot wait until our machine arrives and clients are just as excited. Whole Body Cryotherapy is a breakthrough,” Lieberman says. Located at 3530 Clark Road, Sarasota, learn more about GymSRQ by calling 941-348-6377. Blu Fit Recovery & Nutrition features the Juka whole body cryotherapy sauna, which co-owner Manny Turcotte says is the only cryo equipment that qualifies for insurance reimbursement in Europe and, Manny says, the machine is colder — -150 degrees Celsius — “than any machine out there and optimal for complete thermo receptor shock.” In addition to benefits for fitness, recovery, health and wellness, they stress the beauty benefits as well. At Blufit, in addition to whole body cryo, they offer myriad localized cryo treatments including facials where “nitrogen gas is applied to the face and neck creating a reduction in pore sizes, an influx of blood flow, a stimulation of collagen production and 26 JAN/FEB 2017

a reduction of fine lines and increased overall firmness.” And cryo shaping is also offered: “is applied to the buttocks, thighs or stomach area lowering the temperature of fat cells creating apoptosis, or fat cell death.” Blufit Recovery and Nutrition offers sequential pulse compression, electromagnetic therapy, infrared therapy, LED light therapy and many nutritional supplements and physical recovery items. “Combining the most technologically-advanced treatments with our holistic nutritional approach, we aim at reducing inflammation, reversing signs of aging, promoting peak health performance and increasing overall wellness,” Manny says. “If you are an elite athlete, weekend warrior or soccer mom, Cryotherapy can help you recover from physical activity faster, providing you with energy and vitality.” Blu Fit Recovery and Nutrition is located at 3529 S Tuttle Ave., in Sarasota. The Athlete’s Room in Bradenton uses WBC in conjunction with massage to increase athletic performance and aid in healing, recovery and rebuilding. “When we started in August with the cryo, it was a new, unknown adventure. When clients would come for a massage, they believed in our theory that a cryo session after the massage would enhance their results and we were right,” says The Athlete's Room founder and owner, massage therapist Tricia Allard. “One young lady who was having knee and joint issues, mostly due to growth and the constant pounding of tennis training, was seeking treatment elsewhere for two months. After five massages and cryo she was back on the court.” The Athlete's Room’s motto is ‘Hit the Ground Running.’ “We strive for that with every client,” Tricia says. And cryotherapy is for everyone. “Another young athlete, who is not a fan of massage but a major talent on the soccer field, has just completed her 30th session and been injury-free and muscle tightness-free. As for my older clientele, after 10 sessions, a 70-year-old woman with arthritis cannot believe the decrease in her pain level. She loves coming here every Tuesday and Thursday.” The Athlete’s Room is located 5334 34th St. W. in Bradenton, near IMG Academy. All sessions are by appointment only, so call 941-751-8069 or email Tricia@athletes-room.com or visit Athletes-Room.com

Weighing-In on New Year’s ow many New Year’s resolutions do you think you’ve made over the years? And of those, how many have you stuck to? Not surprisingly, the number one New Year’s resolution made is to lose weight and get fit. Or fitter; even people in good shape determine to do better -- lose more weight, build muscle, and increase strength and performance.
the challenge then is committing to the change. Write down your goals and the steps you’ll take to realize them. Make a plan for how to deal with challenges so you don’t just give up. Keep track of what you’re doing with a journal, for example. And make sure to enlist help be it a friend or family member or perhaps by joining a class or gym, NIH says.
As unsurprising as the number one resolution is, so too is this: according to Statistic Brain, nearly half of Americans make resolutions, around 46 percent, with losing weight at the top of the list. But some 49 percent of us have “infrequent success” with those resolutions and worse, 25 percent fail completely. But losing weight is just one of a number of resolutions that are inextricably tied to one another: getting more exercise, eating healthier, decreasing stress, getting better sleep, quitting smoking or cutting back on alcohol, for example. All are linked in that they represent a lifestyle change. So if that’s your resolution, to live a heathier life overall, here are myriad suggestions for how to stay on track.
The American Council on Exercise says using the so-called SMART plan may help increase your odds of success.
H
According to the National Institutes of Health, setting unrealistic goals can be a recipe for failure because people can become frustrated and give up. The NIH suggests setting short-term, specific and definable goals. Once goals are set,
Loose Weight Quit
Get Another Degree
The SMART acronym loosely stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Time-bound, although some replace attainable with accountable and also relevant can be replaced with realistic. The bottom line, this rubric will help whether the goal is to lose 10 or 100 pounds, run a marathon or just start walking every day, it’s all about goal-setting.
Let’s talk SMART
Specific. Make sure that whatever the goal, it’s clearly defined and specific. For example, a definitive objective like “I want to lose 10 pounds in one month,” or “I want to increase my physical activity from twice a week to four times a week.” Measurable. Once there’s a specific goal, make sure it’s measurable. For example, tracking weight loss or steps walked on a smart phone app.
Go to Italy
Eat Better
Save Money
Buy A New Car
Try Mountai Climbing
Quit Smoking

in
Resolutions Attainable. Don’t make that goal too difficult to reach or too easy, for that matter. Is this something you can actually do? If you want to lose 10 pounds a month, that’s 2.5 pounds per week. Is that do-able? Make sure before setting that goal because a goal too far could result in failure. And if you shoot for a fitness goal that you know is far too easy for you, like walking 200 steps a day; that will certainly not motivate. Making it fun, if possible, can also be a great motivator. Being held Accountable. Having a friend participating with you is a great way to hold you accountable, Her, too. Relevant. Set goals that are important to you, not one that another may be pressuring you to achieve. Let’s be Realistic: If your goals are not good for you or will not motivate you, then they’re not worth pursuing. It could be a set-up for failure. Time. Have a starting date and an end date. Having a deadline is at once a challenge and will help to motivate you. Rewarding yourself at the end date is a good idea, too; the proverbial stick and carrot. So, come up with some reachable SMART goals, whether it’s adding another workout day or subtracting calories make the goals ones you can achieve. Make it work.
The End-All to New Year’s Resolutions » by Bonni London
It’s 2017 and you’ve decided this is the year you’ll shrink your waistline and grow your bank account. Yes, these seemingly polar-opposite goals are connected: eating a healthy diet and engaging in moderate exercise regularly can make you more money.
Increased productivity, energy, and stamina Your brain uses 20 percent of the calories you consume and nearly 50 percent of the glucose available in your blood to keep it properly fueled. Eating a diet that provides a steady flow of glucose will guarantee you have the energy to focus. After glucose, the second major source of fuel for your brain is oxygen. Exercise, especially in the morning, can provide four additional hours of meaningful work.
Fewer sick days Showing up both physically and mentally can accomplish your health and wealth goals. Consuming nutrient-dense foods, abstaining from empty calories, and limiting stimulants will support a healthier immune system. Eating a cornucopia of fruits and vegetables will provide essential phytonutrients as well as a slowly-digested supply of glucose, both which are essential for keeping you not just healthy but also sharp as a tack. Processed carbohydrates should be limited or eliminated entirely due to their ability to raise blood glucose, increase fat storage, and suppress your immune system.
Managing stress Experiencing stress can trigger anxiety, depression and your ability to focus. Eating well not only improves your quality of life but provides ammo for when the pressure is on. When you are under stress, remember that healthy foods can be your best ally.
Protect current and future assets

Hopefully you have thought about saving your money. But have you considered your most precious asset? Your health! Nothing can destroy your nest-egg faster than unforeseen medical expenses. We are living longer than ever, but we are also suffering from chronic diseases that are largely preventable. This means we have an opportunity to protect our assets by engaging in positive lifestyle changes by eliminating bad habits. Looking good, feeling good – the ultimate recipe for success When we look good, we feel good, and apparently that good feeling pays off in more money. Dale Carnegie is quoted as saying that you only get one chance to make a first impression. People decide in less than two seconds what they think about your abilities. People who weigh more get paid less than their slimmer counterparts, and this is particularly true for women, myriad studies have shown. When you feel good about how you look, your confidence increases, and that can mean more success in your life. Bonni London is a registered dietitian, nutritionist and owner of London Wellness. “The unique thing about this particular event is that it is focused on the everyday athlete. This one is about the people. That’s the theme,” says Jerson Daganzo founder and owner of BoxTribe and BoxTribe Games. “It is all about the fitness journey we take each and every day and promoting that fitness is important on a competition floor as well as it is to our every day activities,” he says. The BoxTribe Games in Manatee County is a singular competition; a two-day, three-event competition designed to allow everyday athletes to have “their turn to be in the spotlight … on the big stage.” The BoxTribe Games, the “People's Competition” was “inspired by a community of driven individuals that uses fitness to take their physical and mental limits to the next level.” BoxTribe prides itself on being the “Premier Performance Agency in fitness.” “Our company has been part of hundreds of fitness events 30 JAN/FEB 2017

globally, providing mentorship and consulting tools to help event coordinators run great fitness festivals. We are proud to finally present to you an event that won't be compared to any other, one where we have mixed the best elements from our experience to create something special just for you,” the BoxTribe Games site reads. “This has been a great journey in regards to us trying to make sure it is about the people,” Jerson says. “This 1 ½ year relationship that I have been building has allowed us to create the biggest indoor production competition in the U.S, so it’s bringing all the competitors strengths and weaknesses and making sure we generate something that is for the people, for the everyday functional athlete.” And Jerson says BoxTribe hopes these games will “lead to a series of competitions linked together.” “So what we are trying to do is get to a point where people are permitted to attend these competitions throughout the whole year starting with the BoxTribe Games,” Jerson says. The BoxTribe Games will be held at Feld Entertainment at 800 Feld Way in Palmetto on Feb. 11 and 12. Saturday Feb. 11 will feature the two-person team competition. The divisions for the Tribal Initiation are: Beginners; Scaled; RX; Masters; and Teens. Sunday Feb. 12 will be the Kinetik Collective Affili-
ate Invitational, a four-person team (two males and two females) competition which will highlight all the affiliates in the community. A USAW sanctioned Olympic Weightlifting meet will also be taking place throughout the whole weekend. “If you have never competed in the past but you love our sport, this is the competition for you,” BoxTribe says. “Stop watching other athletes compete and allow yourself to experience what it feels like to be an athlete on the big stage. Don't let all your hard work be unnoticed.”

T
his exercise is a combination move using plyometrics and body weight exercises.
At the starting position, we are in a neutral standing pose then use a squat jump to get over a barrier of modest height, landing on the other side of the barrier and performing two lunge jumps.
32 JAN/FEB 2017
In this demonstration, the barrier is a circle, but if it is just a one-sided barrier, squat-jump over, do two full lunge jumps, turn 180 degrees and squat jump back over the barrier. In the case of this demo, with a circular barrier, remain facing forward and complete second squat jump over the far side of circular barrier. Lunge and Squat Jumps are great if you want to work muscles in your hips, butt,

legs, arms and core. In just one move, a dozen muscles engage to spring your body up in the air. Several more muscles are recruited to help stabilize your body. This is an intermediate level move, so master a basic lunge before you add in the jumping. Exercise performed and described by Eszti Bazso of Eszti Fitness

Serving up Super Smoothies
» by Ellyn Santiago
Polish immigrant, Stephen Poplawski, invented the blender in 1922 in Wisconsin specifically to create blended drinks, albeit for drug store soda fountain shakes and malts. By the 1930s, health food-conscious Californians omitted ice cream, malt and sodas and added fruits to the mix, essentially creating the smoothie we know today; a blended healthy beverage packed with fruits, vegetables, and a plethora of heathy ingredients including anti-oxidant and fiber-rich super foods, herbs, spices, teas, and supplements, among myriad other ingredients. Realizing the huge market opportunity, food manufacturers jumped on the smoothie bandwagon although bottled, commercial smoothies often contain added sugar which translates to added carbohydrates. Fortunately, the beauty of smoothies is that you can prepare them at home with nearly limitless super-healthy and nutritious ingredients right from your fridge, freezer, and pantry.

CLEANSING INGREDIENTS

Âť By Lee McGowan, Staff Writer for Richard's Foodporium
hether training for a marathon, a long distance bicycle race or simply wanting to play longer stretches in a casual game of basketball, all athletes seek additional energy and strength to help maximize their enjoyment and performance. Natural options abound that can help the body prevent injuries while also increasing recovery time from injuries, if they occur. Certainly most athletes understand the amount of exercise and sport specific training invested by high level athletes. But proper nutrition is often overlooked when crafting a plan for athletic success. Taking supplements to enhance a healthy, balanced diet gives an athlete the best opportunity to perform - and feel - their best.
W
For example, otherwise healthy, fit athletes who take a regular, moderate dose of spirulina typically enjoy enhanced endurance. Spirulina is a blue-green algae containing a protein that creates an environment conducive to developing muscle mass. The proteins, iron and beta carotene (30 times what's in one carrot!) found in 38 JAN/FEB 2017

spirulina help combat muscle fatigue. Spirulina also contains natural stimulants that promote muscle tone. It restores energy and vitality, curbs fatigue and reduces muscle cramps. Studies also have indicated a slight upgrade in power among regular exercisers who take spirulina as part of their regular diet. Chlorophyll is an antioxidant found in leafy green vegetables such as collard greens, turnip greens and kale. It's also concentrated in wheatgrass, barleygass, contains vitamins A, C and E and naturally cleans the colon. In addition, chlorophyll contains magnesium which has a calming effect on the body, reducing stress on muscles and the nervous system. Chlorophyll binds toxins in the gut, removing dioxins, benzene and aflatoxin from the body, which in turn increases energy and allows the body to perform at an optimal level. An ideal pH level for the body is slightly alkaline. These pH levels decrease (become more acidic) during workouts, because the body is producing anaerobic energy, which lacks oxygen. The
body takes calcium from the bones to offset this. Muscle tissue becomes more easily fatigued in this condition. Magnesium found in chlorophyll raises alkaline levels in the bloodstream. Supplemental enzymes enable the body's natural enzymes to work more efficiently. Probiotics have multiple positive effects for athletes. For starters, they help the body produce higher levels of protein, which is essential to building stronger muscles. They allow athletes to absorb nutrients faster and therefore, the body receives the fuel necessary to build muscle. Probiotics also strengthen the immune system, which can become depleted via rigorous, intense exercise, such as what an athlete undergoes while preparing for a competition. Athletes training for a marathon or distance bike rice can become susceptible to upper respiratory infections. Experiencing an ailment of this nature can curtail a training program or force an athlete to cancel a planned competition, altogether. Taking probiotics daily for a month can build antioxidant levels and improve body and joint health. In addition, they create short chain fatty acids which give additional boosts of energy during a workout or competition. Probiotics also strengthen the cells that line the gut. This can reduce bloating, gas, diarrhea or other discomforting side effects that can adversely affect a workout. Athletes must raise their calorie intake as they train intensely. This can also lead to similar gastrointestinal issues which, again, probiotics can help prevent. Protease enzymes reduce inflammation and can help bruises heal faster. They've been used to help prevent and treat injuries in serious athletes for more than 100 years, and are another natural and effective way of helping the body recover from a intense workout or minor injury. The German and Austrian Olympic teams consume enzyme capsules throughout the rigorous training they endure while preparing for competition. This consumption is becoming a larger part of sports medicine routines across the globe. Finding the right mix of natural supplements is essential for any athlete. In the modern ultra-competitive world, every athlete should seek advantages to create an environment where the body can reach its potential. Chlorophyll, spirulina, probiotics and other digestive enzymes can be found in detoxifying blends of superfoods to ensure the athlete not only performs his or her best, but can also help prevent injury while improving the chances of a quick recovery.

Get Back f stretchy pants and big tops are your best friend’s right about now, this article is a must-read. We know that for the most part, you’ve been relatively faithful to your fitness regimen, but it’s next to impossible to avoid indulging during the holidays. It’s hard to say no to every appetizer and appletini, Christmas cookie and egg nog, pile of stuffing with gravy or piece of pie. Chances are you’ve overeaten and may have a bit of an insulin hangover (thanks, cookies). It’s that after-Thanksgiving dinner feeling that’s stuck around; depleted, bloated and heavy.
I
The cure is to move your body, plan your meals, hydrate and hydrate some more, swap out your coffee (at least one cup!), for green tea, and perhaps most importantly, give your gut some love with prebiotics. You’ll start feeling yourself again in no time and assuredly you’ll begin to shed any extra pounds you picked up over the holidays.

Jerusalem artichokes, and asparagus are all fiber-packed prebiotics. Add dandelion greens to a salad, add raw wheat bran to your smoothies and snack on bananas, they are all chock full of fiber and perfect prebiotics. Your tummy will thank you.
Drink Up Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate and hydrate some more because unless you’re consuming half your weight in ounces of water a day, you’re not drinking enough. Say you’re 150 pounds, just say, you need to drink 75 ounces of water every day. But make sure to drink it throughout the day, over time; not too much at once, your kidneys prefer it that way. Flush away that holiday bloat.
Gut Goodies Tend to that garden in your gut with prebiotics. Think of them as fertilizer to help grow and nourish the good bacteria and fungi already in your gut. It’s like spring for your tummy; supplement your now trimmed-down diet with prebiotics to help rejuvenate and reforest your gut. Prebiotics are plant fibers that help the healthy bacteria in your colon thrive. Raw leeks, garlic, onion, hickory root, 40 JAN/FEB 2017

Go Green This one is asking a lot for those who simply must have their morning caffeine in a cup of Joe, but swapping out coffee for green tea – which has more than enough caffeine to wake that butt up –
will help to kick-start your metabolism in a good way with those phenomenal polyphenols in every cup. Not a green tea fan? Flavor your green tea wake-up with a little stevia or a dollop of honey, and a splash of lemon. Other flavorings include ginger, a bit of cinnamon or add a little peppermint tea.

Get Up Even if you have (kind of) been sticking to your exercise routine, it’s probably a good idea to bump it up a notch, especially if you’ve overeaten over the holidays and been feeling a bit sluggish. Get up and go. Wake up that laid-back, vacationing metabolism by moving more.
Manage Meals Since during holidays goodies are omnipresent, it’s easy to forget you grabbed a handful of shiny-wrapped Hershey’s Kisses, or a Snickerdoodle or adorned sugar cookie or two or three. One way to get back on track is to execute and follow through on meal planning. Take an hour or two on the weekend to prep and freeze or refrigerate several healthy meals. If you keep track of what you and your family eat, because you’re not the only one in the house who went overboard, you’re more likely to stay on track.

aybe it’s the zombie apocalypse or just woefully lost in the woods as the sun is setting, or maybe it’s a perfectly civilized and well-planned hiking or camping trip, having the right survival gear – just in case – is a must. And some survival skills wouldn’t hurt either.
M
“Be it a hurricane or when during an awesome wilderness adventure you take a wrong turn and find yourself lost, you’ll be glad you were prepared,” Environeers manager Brian Luther advises. The longtime Sarasota-based camping, hiking and all-around everything-outdoor -store carries you-name-it gear to outfit a trip into the wilds. Depending on the geography, your list of must-haves may vary, but Brian suggests the following basics to survive in the elements: a compass; fire-starter (waterproof matches or similar); small, eight-by-eight foot or 10-by-10-foot, 42 JAN/FEB 2017
FIT941.COM
tarp for shelter (a tent would be ideal of course, but in the event there was no plan to spend the night in the woods…); 20 to 40-feet of P-cord (parachute cord); a solid knife and a way to sharpen it; three to five days’ worth of dried foods; water and/or a water filtration device; a small survival handbook and notebook; first-aid kit; small handsaw or hatchet and pack in which to carry it; and a small pot with a lid. Environeers also features outdoor hiking, camping and survival classes including orienteering and navigation, knot-tying, outdoor cooking and many more, some of which Brian says “can get pretty rugged.” Backpacking 101 begins with gear basics; from what you need for what kind of trip to learning how to correctly use that gear and then a weekend hike followed by a one-week
trip. In Orienteering 1 and 2, Environeers most popular class, students learn to master the use of a compass for directionfinding. “Once you’re comfortable,” Brian says, “we take it to the next level and go out on a moonless night-sky.” So you have the right gear and the skills, let’s hit the trail. Environeers sponsors rugged off-trail Florida trips “to get out and experience wild Florida.” Trips include backpacking the Florida Trail, Myakka River State Park, and the Everglades where Brian says, “We spend the entire time in ankle to knee deep water and camping in hammocks.” A number of excursions are planned for the coming months, so you may have a chance to test out your survival plans and skills. Hopefully not, but just in case. In February it’s Cayo Costa State Park where trekkers will journey by boat to barrier islands and hike mangrove swamps and pine forests (and beaches, of course). March brings the aforementioned Everglades hike, a trip you certainly want to be prepared for, with a hammock a must. May brings a backroad trail hike deep in the Ocala National Forest on the Florida Trail and a five-day sojourn on the Appalachian Trail in Georgia. An August backpacking adventure in the Rocky Mountains, specifically several thousand feet toward the heavens at Maroon Bell-Snowmass Wilderness in Colorado where, Brian says, “With an elevation change of several thousand feet and in such a short distance traveled – 27 to 30 miles –, this trip will leave you breathless and from not just the altitude.” A September voyage to hike the Dolomites, the lower Alps found in the mountainous region of northeastern Italy is planned for September. Hikers, donning helmets and attached by harnesses, hike the southern Alps on Via Ferrata, Italian for Iron Gate; basically a fixed protection climbing path.

Trailwalker Gear also offers skills classes on how to make a fire, find water, set up shelter, navigate, use or create tools, prepare or forage for food, survive in inclement weather and more. And, in preparation for a worst case scenario, TrailWalker Gear sells survival kits that range from a small one for a day or two stranded to enough supplies for a family of four for a year. One that has just about everything two people need to survive a week includes nearly 50 servings of emergency food and a duffle bag on wheels that is packed with a compass, nylon rope, Mylar sleeping bags, a two-person tube tent, water pouches, a Swiss Army knife, a compact multi-function shovel, survival whistle, water filtration bottle and water purification tablets, portable stove and stove fuel tablets, utensils, ponchos, hygiene kits, dust masks, hand and body warmers, first aid and bandage kits, light sticks, emergency candles, flashlight, waterproof matches, and a lot more. Visit @TrailwalkerGear on Facebook to sign-up for emails about re-opening, classes, trips and more or call 877-837-1106. There are workouts and then there are literal ass-kicking workouts. Boxing, kick-boxing, mixed martial arts, and Kava Maga are some here in the 941 that are guaranteed to kick some butt.
T
Guillermo Gomez calls his process Martial Fusion® For Guillermo, who spent 30 years as an Aikido practitioner, the fusion he describes “incorporates the three key elements of any physical discipline training; cardiovascular, flexibility and strength,” with “ancient practices and philosophies,” into the modern gym: Martial Fusion® Also known as the Cross Training Fitness Kickboxing system, “Martial Fusion® allows people to have a major calorie burn because of the cardio ingredients, like shadowboxing, a type of workout set around 145 to 150 bpm, which really makes it possible for you to burn anywhere between 800 and 1000 calories in one hour of training. It’s a high-intensity workout,” he explains. “Next, we incorporate all the flexibility training, a key element, based on yoga stretches and positions for example,” Guillermo says. “The purpose is to increase range of motion and provide for better alignment and prevent injury as you perform the martial arts techniques.” 44 JAN/FEB 2017
Guillermo says “core strength is that explosive power that you see in martial arts training.” “This allows you to channel that internal energy and express it through your physical technique and your mental attitude using breathing as the breach between the two,” he says. “In Martial Fusion®, you holistically combine the three separate and equally important processes into one that helps one have a lifestyle of a modern healthy warrior.” Johnny 'Speed' Garcia grew up doing karate and got his first-degree black-belt while in high school. He then started boxing and kickboxing. Johnny recently returned from the World Martial Arts Games in South Africa, where he competed in five divisions and brought home three gold medals, something he calls the "experience of a lifetime.” Johnny says “boxing or any martial art” is powerful workout. "They are both awesome workouts regardless of skill level or experience because you work on doing your best, whatever level that might be," Johnny says. "It's an individual sport focusing on gradually developing skills at a consistent rate.” Johnny, who currently teaches his 'Fast and Furious Kickboxing Fitness' class at DeFit on Tuesdays and Thursdays, says boxing

"It will be a busy year of Pro Karate Tournaments and Pro Kickboxing/Muay Thai Fights around the country and the world," he says. John Brockhoff, certified Instructor of Krav Maga Worldwide provides a workout with multiple benefits to his students’ well-beings. Krav Maga, the official self-defense system of the Israeli Defense Forces, is a way to get in shape through an ass-kicking fitness experience, while learning skills to protect yourself, your family and to get home safe. We love that. As the world's most functional selfdefense program, Krav Maga is a great cardiovascular workout, helps to tone muscle and burn calories. It teaches students how to defend themselves and family members. "Get in shape and go home safe,” is not only John’s motto but goal for participants. “Plus, anyone can do it,” John says. class for the added workout, some take it just for self-defense and the 500-calorie burn is a bonus. According to John, “Krav Maga is designed to get people from 0 to 100 as quickly as possible.”
5 stuJohn says with Krav Maga, dents become “a lean mean fighting machine,” achieve weight loss and improve cardiovascular ability. Krav Maga focuses on increasing fitness, strength, discipline, awareness, 7 self-control and determination and is committed to keeping people healthy, fit and safe through the highest caliber of instruction, John says.
“Students come away with the confi8 dence to know they can fight and not give up, or give in. It is a real win-win," 17 he says, adding that unlike aerobic classes, “moves are not choreographed to music; we simply have powerful drills which push every aspect of your body; real fighting moves that demand a lot of energy. This is a full body workout.” Additionally, John offers The All Women Empowered (AWE) Self-Defense fivesession course. While not technically a workout class he says, participants are still “sweating and getting the heart rate up. For some it’s very challenging. The biggest benefit is that it’s a workout that provides lifetime and lifesaving skills. Participants of this course often refer to it as “life changing.”
