hank you for picking up and reading this edition of Fit941 Magazine. While every issue is a labor or love, this issue is especially close to my heart. Since childhood I have been forced to deal with issues surrounding addiction. Close family members, relatives, friends, and even business partners, have been afflicted by the disease. Figuring out how to deal with loved ones struggling with addiction is troubling by itself. Imagine the struggle the chemically-dependent must face to recover.

STEMCELLTHERAPY

SARASOT A CLINIC IS MAKING STEM CELL TREATMENTS MORE EFFECTIVE BY USING COMBINATION THERAPIES!

MarrApose Stem Cell Therapy Using LumoStem Technology Stem Cell Therapy for common orthopedic conditions. You may have already heard that stem cell therapy could hold the answer for many of mankind’s diseases. Indeed, orthopedic stem cell research has shown great promise as an alternative to painful surgical procedures such as arthroscop y, rotator cuff repair, total joint replacement and spinal surger y. One of the biggest advantages with stem cell therapy is the recovery period of several days compared to that of surger y which can be months. Studies have shown results from orthopedic stem cell procedures to be just as good if not superior to joint replacement surger y, yet insurance companies will not cover this type of intervention. Consider the fact that it took many years before joint replacement surger y was widely accepted. This was due to the vast majority of surgeons initially rejecting the idea of placing foreign objects into the body. Unfortunately it is standard for new technologies to take years before becoming widely accepted and covered by insurers. What can Stem Cell Therapy treat? Be careful when choosing your doctor! Stem cell therapy has recently risen in popularity. Clinics around the country are opening up, claiming to offer these regenerative procedures. It is unfortunate that many of these physicians are poorly trained. An example of this would be that these injections should always be performed using image guidance, such as ultrasound. Another controversial issue is the use of placenta or amniotic uid which does not contain stem cells. “It ammation and pain due to the growth factors, but we saw seemed to be helpful for shor t term no cartilage growth,” says Dr. Lieurance, a sonographer and functional neurologist at Advanced Rejuvenation. Also beware of doctors making false claims that adipose stem cells are inferior to bone marrow stem cells. The majorities of these clinics are franchised and must conform to certain treatment methods which may not be in the patients’ best interest.

LumoStem Technology The clinical name for LumoStem is Photo Activation. LumoStem is showing promise when combined with stem cell injections. “Just like plants need good soil to survive, stem cells need a good terrain to properly grow and duplicate. Photo-Activation works on improving the energy level of the cells and tissues which improves the outcomes in our spinal and joint stem cell treatments,” says Dr. Ronald Bramson, who is both a Podiatrist and Orthopedic Specialist. Until now it has been impossible to achieve cient laser dosage in deep areas of the body where the origin of pain and arthritis exist. This is because the body absorbs nearly 70% of the laser light particles in the rst millimeter of skin. Research has shown cant cartilage growth following direct laser application to nerves of the spine and the articular surface of cartilage. It is widely accepted that laser therapy can enhance stem cell growth as well as the cells ability to easily differentiate into healthy cells. “Laser therapy has been a game changer for reducing pain and recovery times with our stem cell treatments. We have noticed quicker, faster, and more successful outcomes,” says Dr. Ronald Bramson.

Specialized laser needle is placed carefully into the knee joint.

With lights turned off, the laser is visualized to ll the joint reach the articular cartilage

Bone Marrow vs. Adipose Stem Cells Both BMAC (Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate) and adipose derived stem cells, or SVF (Stromal Vascular Fraction), are effective. Both have the potential to differentiate into mature functional cartilage. When compared, SVF has shown superiority to BMAC due to the profound ammator y effects of SVF. This may be related to the well documented decline of bone marrow stem cell numbers and vitality with age. Another important advantage of using SVF is their abundance throughout the body. 1 in every 100 cells in abdominal fat is a stem cell. Stem cell therapy using BMAC has been performed much longer than SVF. Simply put, there are more studies available on bone marrow stem cell population, which is why some practitioner s might use BMAC alone, even in light of superior studies on SVF. A 2014 European study conducted on 1,200 patients showed a 90% success rate with joint regeneration using SVF. Researcher s at Leiden University Medical Center’s Depar tment of Immunohematolog y and Blood Transfusion in The Netherlands, led by Helene Roelofs, Ph.D., conducted the study to compare BMAC to SVF. They were seeking an alternative for stem cell therapies due to the small quantity of stem cells available in bone marrow. “Adipose tissue is an interesting alternative since it contains approximately a 500-fold higher frequency of stem cells,” Dr. Roelofs said. They compared the cells healing ability and found it took a smaller dose of

About Advanced Rejuvenation

Advanced Rejuvenation has been providing regenerative orthopedic care in Sarasota since 1997. They have been a leader in the development of cutting edge methods for regenerative medicine using prolotherapy, prolozone, LumoStem, PRP or Platelet Rich Plasma & Stem Cell therapy. Many patients travel to the center from as far as out of the country due to the unique methods they have developed over the last 20 years. The clinical staff includes Medical, Podiatric, Osteopathic, Orthopedic, Radiology, Stem Cell Lab Processing , Sonography, Acupuncture& Neurologist.

SVF cells to achieve the same effect compared to the BMAC. They concluded that SVF was ammation. This superior to BMAC. SVF stem cells appear to be better at reducing chronic may improve outcomes in orthopedic medicine by improving the growth of the stem cells and their ability to differentiate into tendons, ligaments and cartilage. In addition, the sheer number of cells is much higher with SVF compared to BMAC.

Why combine Adipose and Bone Marrow stem cells together? In 2008 Advanced Rejuvenation performed their rst MarrApose. The idea of combining SVF with BMAC was introduced to them by David Crane, M.D. and Rober t Alexander, M.D., who pioneered the treatment in 2006. “It was logical to us that the combination of BMAC and SVF would be superior to having one or the other alone. Over the years we have completed hundreds of cases and have seen far better results when using both SVF and BMAC,” says Dr. Alexander Smither s, who is both a Doctor of Oriental Medicine and M.D. graduate with Advanced Rejuvenation. rmed their obser vations. The combination of BMAC with SVF showed ed In 2015 a new study 89% success where BMAC alone only showed 75% success.

SOBERING

FITNESS » by Ellyn Santiago

he science is sobering: adding regular and dynamic exercise as part of a substance abuse recovery program can greatly increase an addict’s odds of success in sobriety.

T

Dale Lively of LIVE Training Center in Palmetto has an intimate understanding of the issue. (Please see ‘Dale’s Story’) “We already know the science behind exercise; it’s the most underutilized anti-anxiety medication and the most underutilized anti-depressant. We all know the chemical effects of dopamine and serotonin as we work out. Exercise as a whole can aid in the recovery process,” he explains. “Yeah, we can get clean and sober but we can look in the mirror and hate the way that we look. Applying an exercise program can greatly benefit people in their recovery process.” But he quickly adds that “exercise does not solve all problems.” In a National Institutes of Health (NIH) study of substance abuse outpatients, more than 70 percent were not exercising at all even though among those surveyed, 95 percent said they wanted to “engage” in a fitness program specifically designed for people in recovery and 89 percent said they wanted to start working out 12 MAR/APR 2017

FIT941.COM

when they had a couple of months of sobriety under their belt. So the desire is there, but wanting to do something and actually doing it is quite another matter. Not to mention the fact addiction treatment is tough at best for most addicts; detox is often brutal and even with subsequent therapeutic treatment plans, people in treatment have often demons to face; sad, painful and uncomfortable truths and emotions. Often, unless one’s recovery includes plenty of therapy, some of the emotional issues that may have led to substance abuse linger. And Dale says that based on his experience, “An exercise program by itself won’t fix the problem.” “While I think it’s a huge asset in recovery, the real priority in the beginning needs to be the emotional healing of the heart and soul and getting to the root of the issues that led you there,” he says. “Incorporating fitness and exercise as part of the recovery program is an important piece of recovery, but it is just a piece.” Erin Geraghty, yoga therapist and recovery coach at Thrive Yoga & Fitness, has been there and can relate. (Please see ‘Erin’s Story’).

“When I work with addicts in recovery, I encourage exercise as an act of radical love for themselves,” she says. Sober fitness is a trend these days. One of the pioneers in the field is the non-profit Phoenix Multisport which was created in 2006 by Scott Strode, a longtime former addict, as a gym community where all events, classes, and even workout gear is free for members to help “develop and maintain the emotional strength they need to stay sober.” Locally, there’s no gym dedicated to recovering addicts and Phoenix Multisport is only found in California, Colorado and Massachusetts. But there’s plenty of hope right here in the 941. Ask any trainer: essentially every gym has its share of clients in recovery.

Sober Fitness At Thrive At Thrive Yoga & Fitness, Erin walks the walk. She regularly works with addicts in recovery and believes too that “clients

that come to me have perhaps taken the first steps to get sober, so that shows me that have the desire to change.” “Yoga helps to calm the nervous system and allows deep selfreflection while strengthening, shedding stress, and creating more openness,” she says. “With addictions, we tend to close ourselves off from the world and view ourselves as separate. Going to a yoga class, just like going to an AA meeting, reminds us that we are all just searching for a slice of happiness. Yoga teaches us how to find that on the inside.” Erin explains that, “Many addicts are so depleted, exhausted (deficient) and at the same time filled with so much anxiety and hatred towards themselves (toxicity). So, as I work with addicts in recovery, I encourage some form of exercise as an act of radical love for themselves,” she says. “Exercise is a form of self-care to boost immunity, circulation in the body, stimulate the lymphatic system for detoxification, but also to learn mind body connection.”

DALE'S STORY

"REVELATIONS IN RECOVERY"

D

ale Lively spent a decade as an addict. Now, he’s beginning his seventh year in recovery.

“After 10 years as an addict, in October of 2010, Dale entered treatment. But it wasn’t an overnight effort. As he says, “addiction is a family disease” and affects loved ones and friends significantly; “A lot of sacrifices are made.” So with help and support, Dale entered a faith-based treatment facility. “That helped me to work through what I was dealing with,” Dale says. “So much of an addiction is about dealing with traumas and things that happened to us when we were kids. It’s important for recovery that all of that be dealt with first; the emotional and spiritual pain I think is the root of it all.” Dale spent 18 months at the facility. He got clean and helped others at the treatment center to do the same. “I woke up one day feeling like my emotional and spiritual health was finally in a good place, but on the outside, I saw the consequences and effects of years and years of disrespecting and abusing my body. I wanted to have my ‘outside’ reflect what was going on ‘inside.’ So, I started on a journey and lost almost 80 pounds. Then my sister challenged me to do a half marathon. Since recovery needs to include structure, accountability and goals, I signed up for the marathon and worked toward that goal daily: I’d go to work, work on my recovery and then go work out. That structure alone really aided in my recovery. That whole process taught me a lot about myself.” And for Dale, that also meant a spiritual epiphany. “It’s a God issue: it’s a God-shaped hole we’re all trying to fill. Now, when I hear, 'My son or my daughter has a heroin problem,' I’m like, ‘Alright God, I see what you’re doing here.’ Then, I work to connect with people, to help them help themselves heal.” Reach out to Dale at dale@livetrainingfl.com. 14 MAR/APR 2017

FIT941.COM

She incorporates yoga and sometimes, running or walking, but she first “uses a method of questioning and energy-clearing that quickly gets to the root cause of their suffering and helps to shift their perspective from pain, to understanding and compassion. I believe that no one is defective at their core, but there are painful belief systems that have caused them to reach for drugs or alcohol.” “The most important aspect of exercise in my programs is to reestablish the mind body connection so we can realize how amazing we are,” says Erin, whose podcasts ‘Thriving After Addiction’ are popular. “The best part about exercise is that connection it forges in us so we feel whole, complete, and alive.” Months ago, Erin worked with a client with six months of sobriety who “had a lot of pain around her relationships with her family as well as her place in the world.” The woman told Erin yoga “was the glue that brought everything together” for her. Recently, Erin received a thank you letter from the woman, now in New Zealand. “There was a time that it felt like a farfetched pipe dream, but I can without a doubt say that our work together helped me get here,” she wrote in part. “The things I learned with you are still helping me now, across the globe. Thank you for your work - it is so important. I can happily say that I am sober and in a better heart-space than I've ever known to be possible. My travel yoga mat and I thank you.”

If a client “opens the door” to reveal their recovery struggle, “I say, ‘Let’s help you get healthy.’” Dale’s firsthand and direct experience helps him to help others. “I stress you have to start by loving yourself and remembering that it’s a process; you’re not going to be perfect. If someone were to come in to me and say, ‘I have three days sober. Is this a good idea for my recovery?’ I say, ‘Sure we can start right now. But your primary focus has got to be to get your head right, your emotions right and your heart right and at the same time, create some accountability and structure.’” rin is an addict in recovery. When she goes to a recovery support group meeting, she says: “Hi, my name is Erin and I'm in recovery from everything:” Erin had a longtime addiction to alcohol and pills, but she also “struggled with an eating disorder for 12 years.”

E

“Also, I grew up around addiction. My eldest brother is addicted to crack and I had many friends die of heroin overdoses growing up. They didn't know how to get well, even in recovery. I watched them struggle and relapse over and over. I think that fueled my fire more than anything to develop a method for comprehensive recovery and balanced living,” she says. “I think that's why I'm such a great coach and mentor for addicts. I know how wretched it feels to be in the grip of addiction, but I also created a path to get beyond it.” Erin’s studio is Thrive Yoga & Fitness. “As a recovery coach, I use a blend of yoga, meditation, nutrition, and personal coaching to teach addicts in recovery how to live skillfully, love themselves, and show up in the world with passion and commitment.” “For sure, for those of us with past drug and alcohol abuse, we have not always been nice to our bodies. If we look at addiction as a disease, a curable disease yet still a disease, we can begin to understand why addicts reach for things in excess,” Erin says. Dale makes it abundantly clear that what he encourages people to do first and foremost is to seek out treatment, therapy, support groups, especially faith-based groups like AA and NA, and then incorporate exercise. He wants people to know exercise alone is not a panacea; “it alone will not fix you.” And people in recovery are cautioned against the addiction transfer trap, he says. Don’t go overboard. Unhealthy, too extreme or obsessive exercise or similarly, unhealthy and extreme obsessive calorie restriction for example is not a good idea. Try to find the happy medium, he says. “Switching one addiction for the other,” Dale says. “Trying to find balance can be difficult but it’s the key. Extremes are easy; balance is difficult. Just as with regular fitness people not struggling with sobriety, you can’t just workout, workout, and workout without recovering. It’s all about balance.” Check out Thrive Yoga & Fitness at ThriveYogaFit.com and LIVE Training Center at LiveTrainingFl.com.

hether the seas are calm or the surf’s up, where kitesurfing comes from, you’re on a board which is attached to a kite. Off you go!

Island Style Sports in Sarasota explains it this way: “The idea behind kiteboarding is very simple–you stand on a board with foot straps or bindings and use the power of a large controllable kite to propel Kiteboarding, as it is most commonly you and the board across the water. This referred, especially here in Southwest simplicity also makes kiteboarding chalFlorida, is a watersport that’s an epic lenging. ing became popular but was mostly seen in places like Hawaii. But around 1999, single direction boards, like wake boards or small surfboards, paved the way for kiteboarding; riding on relatively flat water, perfect for Gulf Coast beaches and shorelines. Each of the local kiteboarding shops in the 941 offer lessons. So what’s involved in the lessons? Kiting classes include: ground school and open water; the how-to’s for launching, flying, landing, bar and line usage and safety devices; understanding and master the equipment, and; importantly, learning to assess wind speed, strength and direction as well as being clear on rules,

regulations, safety and grasping the jargon. It sounds complicated, but at Sarasota Kite Boarding Lessons, they “recognize people learn differently” and adapt teaching style to accommodate each student. They also say they provide “step-by-step instruction” in its ground school, simulator and water training. Once land skills and knowledge is mastered, it says, students apply what they’re learned in “open water conditions.” Kiss The Sky Kiteboarding, with a 941 area code but whom provides lessons throughout the Tamps Bay area, says no experience is necessary. The first open water lesson is focused on safety and while being fit is a plus, extreme upper body strength is not a pre-requisite. And no, they say, they never worry about sharks.

Some kiter shops’ lessons are mobile depending on weather and water conditions and most hold first open-water classes on the flattest, shallowest water possible so the student gets acclimated. Jet-skis and/ or pontoon boats and the like are nearby for that first open water lesson. The length of time it takes to master kiteboarding varies widely; for some, it may take just 5 or 6 hours, for others, perhaps 15. The idea is to feel confident and safe. And, in all cases, especially in the 941 kiteboarding schools, the instructors are certified by the Professional Air Sports Association. Lessons are not cheap; private classes can go as high $400 for a 2-hour lesson, but group classes can be significantly less and often quite affordable. Beauty Benefits of

CHARCOAL harcoal has been used medicinally for millennia. Ancient Egyptians used it as a poultice to keep wounds clean; in India, around 450 B.C. charcoal was used for water filtration and 18th century scientists interested in finding ways to rid the body of toxins found charcoal effective. Activated carbon is still used today in water filters and as a poison antidote. In fact, ER doctors use charcoal to treat alcohol poisoning or drug overdoses since it draws out impurities. And now your local Richard’s Foodporium has it available in all their stores.

C

It’s not a stretch then to imagine that a charcoal-based skin cleanser, which detoxifies and removes dirt, oils and other impurities, makes sense. 20 MAR/APR 2017

Charcoal skincare products, including charcoal soap, have been trendy for a while, but there's a reason: it works. Most charcoal soap contains a charcoal powder, Binchotan, which draws the bad stuff out of your skin. And it does that work gently. Traditional soaps often contain harsh surfactants like sulfates that dry and burn, aggravate, sting, inflame or otherwise irritate the skin. And commercial soap often contains hormone-disrupting chemicals, parabens, synthetic dyes, and fragrances. Stuff most of us would rather keep off of our faces. And even though many deep-cleaning and detoxifying skincare products dry out skin, natural and organic charcoal soaps often contain hydrating oils and antioxidant-rich organic extracts.

FIT941.COM

» By Anna Panzarino And charcoal soap, in particular, seems to provide a plethora of beauty benefits. Per Livestrong, activated charcoal draws bacteria, poisons, chemicals, dirt and other micro-particles to the surface of skin, which may help fight acne and achieve a more flawless complexion. Charcoal powder absorbs many times its own mass, which makes it a popular ingredient in facial masks. Activated through heat and exposure to steam, the carbon forms large fissures and pockets in its surface and so when it’s exposed to contaminants, like the grit on your skin, that literally is trapped in the carbon's pores. Richard’s Foodporium recently launched its own charcoal soap under the company’s private label: Richard’s Charcoal & Rosemary Soap. Richard’s also carries other charcoal-based products including deodorant and toothpaste. Visit RichardsFoodporium.com for more information.

Train Like a

NINJA » by Ellyn Santiago

he American Ninja Warrior TV show was spun-off eight seasons ago from the Japanese completion series Sasuke. And while since its first season only two competitors have actually won the course, a number of local warrior hopefuls are waiting for a call-back for the ninth season of the popular obstacle course show as Fit941 goes to press.

T

LIVE Training Center owner and trainer Dale Lively says in 2016, 10 of the 100 ninjas that were called from the region for American Ninja Warrior Season Eight “frequented our facility for all of their Ninja Warrior training needs.” LIVE Training Center is where competitors, aspiring competitors, or just someone who has watched the show comes to train on obstacles from the actual show to best prepare for the task at hand. “That’s unheard of. Think about that. They’re only taking 100 people from the southeast -- and they have thousands and thousands applying -- and 10 of them are from our facility. Wow. That has to say something. I’m a little biased but we are pretty good at what we do but also that we’re one of the only facilities around that has the resources that we do,” Dale says. “It’s a big attraction for a lot of people in central and southwest Florida but we’ve also had a girl come from Georgia, one from Miami, people from the Panhandle, from all over." But training like a ninja is more than just trying to get on national TV. It’s a fitness lifestyle. “The show is only a few months long so there are leagues and events that fill in the time between shows in an effort to bring awareness to the sport and to keep everyone in shape,” Dale says. Recently, the Ultimate Ninja Athlete Association (UNAA) held a competition for “ninjas to hone their skills.” “Our Ninja Warrior program uses our indoor obstacle course in our 7,500-square foot facility. It’s a living and evolving obstacle course. What I mean by that is this sport is constantly evolving, changing, growing in an effort to try and keep up with the athlete as they continue to get better. So the course we have set up is always changing; it gets continually challenging and difficult.” 22 MAR/APR 2017

FIT941.COM

And then there’s the thing about ninjas, he says, they don’t really compete against each other as much as against the course itself. “One of the very cool things about this sport, is the camaraderie; the ability to share in each other’s successes,” he says. That’s cool, but what about the person who wants to give it a go but is a bit intimidated? “We recently had a mini competition where 30 clients came and competed in a very friendly manner; veterans and beginners. The experience we have and share helps when beginners come in creating an environment for anyone that walks in and says, ‘You know what, I have never been able to do a rope swing or a cargo climb or scale a wall or do quad steps or any of those things I see on TV.’ We say, ‘We’re here to help.’ We can help people realize their full ability and potential and whether that is in Ninja Warrior, whether that is in weight loss, whether that is in OCR, this is what we love to do.” Don’t get us wrong, as Dale says, there are fundamental skills necessary including balance, upper body control and grip strength. “Those are the functional fitness aspects needed, but we work to make sure each and every person gets the help they need no matter their skill level or ability,” he says. At LIVE, there’s not only the Ninja Obstacle Training Open Gym but the Boot Camp classes that LIVE is known for, are held daily from 6 a.m. to nearly 6 p.m. And on Saturday’s there’s an Obstacle Course Racing (OCR) FIT class and a 2 p.m. Kids Ninja Warrior Class.

he National Institutes of Health have studied the benefits of thermogenic supplements ad nauseam in order to determine the effectiveness of thermogenics in boosting metabolism to help promote weight loss and obesity in an effort to ward off or fight “increased risks for heart diseases, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, many forms of cancer, and other diseases.”

Fight the Fat and Boost T Metabolism with Non-Stimulant

THERMOGENIC SUPPLEMENTS 24 MAR/APR 2017

A little background on the thermogenesis process may be helpful; the NIH describes it as the “process of converting nutrient calories into the heat energy essential for body homeostasis, that is,

FIT941.COM

thermoregulation, maintaining healthy metabolism, and body weight control.” And while the best approach to weight loss and is decreased caloric intake and regular exercise, thermogenic supplements can be an ally in the fight. Thermogenic supplements, even non-stimulant ones, are substances that stimulate that process – increase metabolism – with the non-stimulant ones being likely safer since they don’t produce cardiovascular effects. Stimulant thermogenics like ephedrine and caffeine, the former which has largely been banned ”because of the reported

high incidence of adverse effects when used at doses higher than recommended, while caffeine is the worlds most consumed stimulant,” says NIH. So assuming that you’re not pumping way too much caffeine into your body and recognize the effects of ephedrine, let’s look at the non-stimulant thermogenics that can help in the fat-fight. The NIH provides examples including: bitter orange extract, although similar to ephedrine, it’s the natural cousin and poses no cardiovascular effects; green coffee bean extracts; green tea extracts; forskolin, which helps promote thyroid function (it’s a herb in the mint family); and capsaicin. Let’s talk about capsaicin. Found in hot peppers like jalapeños and habañeros, capsaicin just may be one for the best metabolism-boosting foods you can eat. Actually fruits, these hot peppers, the habanero being about 10 times hotter than the jalapeño, while alone won’t make you lose weight, they nonetheless help speed things up so incorporating these peppers, all high in potassium and vitamins A C, and E, in your diet can assist your body in its fight against fat and maintain a healthy heart. Plus, NIH says, myriad plant extracts also show “beneficial effects with respect to lipid and carbohydrate metabolism and do so without adverse effects,” including carotenoids and flavonoids like: S. reticulata (a species of lilac); S. indicum (sesame) L. speciosa (known more commonly as banaba, which has blood-sugar-lowering properties), C. quadrangularis (in the grape family, it is known to help prevent diabetes, optimize cardiovascular function, and help with weight loss) and M. oleifera (the ‘drumstick tree,’ helps lower blood sugar and boost metabolism.) “These plants’ extracts when used in combination with well‐known thermogenic agents offer great potential for enhancing energy metabolism and production without adverse effects. Potential benefits of various combination products include weight loss and weight management, increased alertness and energy, and enhanced sports performance,” NIH says.

Who Isn’t Doing Compression Therapy? image: Provided by Blufit

T

he question isn’t which sports team, icon or celebrity has raved about compression therapy in an Instagram, Twitter, Facebook or Snapchat post. The question is, ‘Who hasn’t?’

Compression therapy is the go-to recovery method for youname-it professional and collegiate sports teams, endurance and elite athletes. Olympic Gold medalist Simone Biles and basketball legend LeBron James recently posted pics of themselves undergoing compression therapy on social media. The Boston Ballet, US Rowing, and Ironman US Series, the NFL Giants and the NBA Celtics, USA Cycling, USA Triathlon even pop star Drake in an Instagram post, are all onboard with compression therapy and the NormaTec boots in particular. Forbes magazine says Drake is a fan, not an official rep. NormaTec CEO Gilad Jacobs said the hip-hop superstar was not compensated; he just really “does love his NormaTec.” Jacobs went on to say hundreds of his massage compression therapy boot devices were used in Rio's Olympic Village. And the system has been featured widely in the media from Bloomberg to Wired magazine.

What is it?

Simply stated, compression therapy increases blood flow in your limbs which greatly helps in recovery. Through graduated compression from the ankle up, where there may be restricted

blood circulation, the pressure and contraction helps to loosens veins, reduces pain and promotes recovery. The principle of this therapy is to exert a controlled pressure on the limb.

Why NormaTec?

MannyTurcotte from BluFit can tell you. So can Dr. John Lieurance from Advanced Rejuvenation and myriad other local recovery and rehab venues, including IMG. There is no shortage of data and studies to back up the claims of the benefits of compression therapy for athletic recovery. NormaTec uses ‘Sequential Pulse’ technology which “synergistically combines three distinct massage techniques to speed the body’s normal recovery process: pulsing compression, gradients, and distal release. Through these mechanisms, the NormaTec Recovery System maximizes circulation throughout the body to help you look better, train harder, and recover faster.”

How it Works

The NormaTec boots’ pulse massage pattern starts in the foot, hand or lower hip and then moves upward zone by zone massaging, compressing and holding, and then repeating that pattern to get that blood circulating and moving out of extremities. Using compressed air, the cycle begins with pre-inflation which allows the boots to mold to your limb and then the

compression begins, which feels like the kneading and stroking you experience during a massage, as a pulse and then a release. This will repeat for each segment as the compression pattern works its way up your limb. Besides recovery, some of the claimed benefits of compression therapy include the reduction of inflammation and pain, it removes toxins, improves circulation, decreases accumulated water in the limbs, that ‘heavy leg’ feeling, and may assist in preventing the development of cellulite and can tighten loose skin.

Recovery in the 941

“Compression therapy is a great way for athletes to recover,” Manny Turcotte of BluFit Recovery and Nutrition, says. BluFit features 30 minute and one-hour sessions with the compression therapy NormaTec system.

“But it’s not just elite athletes, because compression therapy can help anyone have better circulation and it can relieve pain,” Manny says. “Plus, compression therapy can prevent early onset varicose. And those are just some of the benefits.” At Advanced Rejuvenation, Lieurance says that while the benefits of compression therapy are many and widely studied, it’s a seefor-yourself recovery method. Backed by research, Lieurance says the “dynamic compression enhances pressure-to-pain threshold in elite athlete recovery.” To check it out for yourself or get more information, visit blufitrecovery.com or advancedrejuvenation.us.
