■ WHATS YOUR SECRET WEAPON ■ WOMEN
Research shows that one reason females have difficulty losing weight compared to men is lower levels of testosterone. When they do lose weight, they do not gain muscle mass like men do. Low levels of Testosterone in women can cause unwanted bulging in hips/thighs, infertility, fragile bones, inability to orgasm, and thinning hair. Levels of Testosterone in women vary from 17 to 80 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dL), depending on age and other factors. As they get older, those levels can fall as low as 1 to 10 ng/dl. Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is equally as beneficial in females as in men, just on a smaller scale.
LIFESTYLE
A Healthy lifestyle is associated with higher hormone levels and higher hormone levels seem to induce a more active, healthier lifestyle. Treatments for men are aimed at getting testosterone levels up to an optimal range, around 850 to 1100. Treatments for women are aimed at getting testosterone levels up to an optimal range, around 40 to 60. We offer Easy inexpensive testing, Saliva, finger prick, blood s e r u m or urine ($25.00 to $50.00).
MEN Research published in the journal of endocrinology
shows that low levels of testosterone is a risk factor for heart disease in men and is also linked to Alzheimer’s disease. Levels of Testosterone in men vary from 150 to 1200 nanograms per deciliter (ng/dL), depending on age and other factors. Testosterone levels typically start to decline after age 30. For some men, as they get older, those levels fall to 500 or below. “Low T” has been attributed to low sex drive, sluggish feeling, muscle aches, memory loss, lack of focus and inability to lose weight even while dieting and hitting the Gym.
WEAPON
As with other hormones, conventional medical opinion about testosterone is lagging way behind the scientific evidence. Agevital is your research expert! Let us be your healthcare advocate and help you start LIVING, not just existing. USING EXERCISE TO RE-ALIGN POSTURE, SO YOU MOVE BETTER!
What is Re-alignment Therapy? It’s called the Egoscue Method and it’s a holistic approach to changing posture through whole body exercise. It’s no secret that muscles move bones. If your body has lost its designed posture, it’s because muscles have moved your bones into a new, dysfunctional position. Pain is the body’s way of alerting you to the fact that your body isn’t aligned, and therefore isn’t moving, properly. We use a series of gentle exercises and stretches to return musculoskeletal balance and symmetry back to your body. Correct Functional Alignment
Dysfunctional Alignment
KEY POINTS ABOUT PAIN AND POSTURE: THE SITE OF THE PAIN IS NOT THE SOURCE OF THE PAIN. THE ACTIVITIES WE DO ARE NOT THE CAUSE OF OUR PAIN. THE BODY IS A UNIT AND MUST BE TREATED AS ONE. MISALIGNED POSTURE AND HABITUAL MOVEMENT PATTERNS CAUSE PAIN. POSTURE AND PAIN CAN BE IMPROVED QUICKLY.
“Many things we may take for granted, like sitting with your leg crossed or sitting Indian style on the floor... I can now do with ease that I couldn’t do for a long time. I feel amazing and I move better! I can squat without pain in my back and can enjoy doing movements like clean and jerk again! I’m so thankful for Lauren and this therapy!” -J. S

e’re well into year two of Fit 941 Magazine and we are extremely pleased with the explosive growth and popularity of the publication. The 941 area just gives us so much material to work with and has an incredibly diverse group of fitness and nutrition pros with endless information to report on for you, our readers.
Sarasota is a legendary circus town and home of John and Mable Ringling and the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, which showcased the ‘Flying Wallenda’s’ famous of course for their high wire act without a safety net! Nik Wallenda is still keeping that family daredevil reputation alive and well. We thought it only fitting to do a story on Sarasota’s claim to fame and feature some of the area’s acrobatic-themed fitness classes and some of the professionals that have created some great programs based around the circus concept. Some of the fitness professionals that work here today were actually circus performers in the recent past, so we loved the vantage point they brought to our story.

So here we are in Spring 2016 and I can see that the gyms are not quite as jam packed with the New Year’s “resolution-ers”, and some of the ‘seasonal’ residents have started back up North. Now is the time, if you were one of those New Year’s ‘resolution-ers’, to regroup, try to keep the momentum going and not fall back into blowing off the workouts, and keep driving right past the donut shop or hamburger joint and stay the course. This year, make it different and stick with it. There are so many new types of workouts here that there must be one that grabs you. Is it Orange? Is it Scorching? Does it Crunch you or give it to you Around the Clock? Does it Pound you or Spin you, CrossFit you or drive you to Insanity? Does it make you feel like a real Live Ninja? It can!

Look through these pages and find something that inspires you to step it up! In May, if you work hard, you can enter Fit 941’s Elite Fitness Challenge being held at the Celery Fields. There will be prizes and bragging rights and incredible things to see and do and buy! The point is, instead of the first two months of the year being the beginning and subsequent end of the resolution, just forget about it being some short-lived little after thought and make this all a part of your lifestyle because, if you’ve gotten any results at all, and improved your health and fitness level to any degree, let that feeling carry you through the rest of the year working hard on getting stronger, leaner, faster and happier!

Athlete Profile Getting to Know Gyrotonic Pilates
T
his month, Cinde Carroll and GYROTONIC® Master Trainer, Elizabeth Holland, are offering an informal get-together to explore the similarities and differences between Pilates and Gyrotonic.
EJ Griffitts, III Now 13, EJ Griffitts III was just 9 when he watched all the ‘Rocky’ movies and then took his first boxing lesson. In training with Adam Jaco, EJ spends 10 to 12 hours a week in the gym boxing. His mother Jamie Griffitts says, “He never asks to skip practice.” “What amazes me about EJ is his commitment to practice. It’s physically difficult to train practically everyday, even weekends,” says Jamie, who owns Acro Fit Gymnastics Center. “EJ has an innate competitive drive and love for sports. And is apparently very skilled and determined according to his coach, Adam Jaco, who says, “EJ is a perfect example of a fighter who both uses his finesse and boxing skill, but can also dig deep and really brawl if he needs too. At only 13 years of age, Ej has already developed much of the skills that you typically see in a seasoned veteran.” EJ has been an athlete since elementary school. According to Jamie, EJ began playing tackle football since at 9, attended national tournaments and elite training camps and the young cornerback was chosen as a ‘Top Gun All-Star’ by FBU (Football University). EJ attends Incarnation Catholic School in Sarasota where he earns A’s and B’s and whose science project recently qualified for County Science Fair.
So what's the big difference? “Pilates is two-dimensional and linear,” says Elizabeth. “It is an excellent modality for teaching people how the individual parts of their bodies work together. Gyrotonic is three-dimensional, which more realistically reflects our real-life movements in sports and everyday life.” The Gyrotonic exercise method has been touted by celebrities including Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jennifer Anniston. But despite the buzz, the exercise programs are relatively new in this area: “I find myself having to explain it a lot but I’m happy to say, Sarasota is catching on,” Cinde says. As Cinde sees it, fitness begins inside the body; it only becomes complete when the mind is present: “My goal is to be a guide on this journey of fitness self-exploration and to support and inspire my clients to a new level of body awareness that leads to greater overall strength and conditioning. It's celebrating physical transformation from the inside out.” Join the exploration and discussion over wine and cheese, Thursday, April 14, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 2886 Ringling Blvd, Suite D, Sarasota. For more information, call 941-203-8156 or visit GyrotonicSrq.com
Golf and Gala Benefits Navy Seal’s Families
F
reedom isn’t free. It is not just the warriors out on the front lines, but their spouses, children and extended families who are all making sacrifices in the name of our freedom. Supporting these families who have lost their fathers, sons and husbands is the mission of the Brian Bill Foundation. The inaugural Navy Seal Golf & Gala Benefit on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at the Ritz Carlton Member Golf Club will be like no other event in Sarasota. Along with a round of golf, a delicious dinner and unique Navy Seal auction items, the keynote speaker is highly decorated Lieutenant Michael Thornton. He received the Nation’s highest award, the Congressional Medal of Honor, for his heroic actions during his tour of duty in Vietnam where he saved the life of a fellow Seal. Sandy Buchanan is the honorary chairwoman and PGA and NFL players will be in attendance. The Brian Bill Foundation was created by Scott Bill in honor of his son Brian, a Navy Seal, who died protecting our freedom.
Jamie says of her son, that she’s “excited to see where his dedication takes him in the future.” For more information visit BrianBillFoundation.org 12 MARCH | APRIL 2016

Success Story Orange Theory Fitness Getting’ Big
O
range Theory Fitness has grown. Again. Owners Mark Flannagan and his daughter Heather – who turned her dad on to OTF when she was manager of a Colorado location -- say they’re proud to announce their newest location. Before
After
Daniel McDougal A year ago, Daniel McDougal made a decision: “I decided I didn’t want to be 50 and fat.” At the time, in March of 2015, he weighed in at 183 pounds. For Daniel, who says his “fighting weight was around 150,” that extra 33 pounds was a weight far too heavy to carry, physically and mentally. Daniel had always been an athlete, he says. “I had been a distance runner. I played soccer, basketball, baseball and I was an expert downhill skier,” he says. “But the real world had distracted me from staying fit.” The everyday: work, responsibilities, family, work and more work. Daniel is the bartender at Lido Beach Resort Tiki Bar. Though he had made attempts at getting back in shape, and in some cases with fair results, life once again got in the way: “I had ventured into body building a couple times in the past with good results, but again, the real world stopped me.” Last February was his wake-up call: “I looked in the mirror in February and said ‘no more.’ I started running again.” And he did that for six weeks before joining a gym, Anytime Fitness. Daniel says at the time, his body fat was at 20 percent. He hired personal trainer Susan Taiz and really got to work. “I turn 50 June 9 and my goal has been to be in good enough shape to be on the cover of Fit941,” he says, only half joking. “I quit eating almost all wheat products and cut out all foods with corn syrup and or sugar. I was overweight with 20% body fat when I started and I am now 168 pounds with 14 percent body fat.” Way to go, Daniel. See you at the beach.

"We started over a year ago painting Sarasota orange as we opened OTF South Sarasota, which has been a great success, but we saw such a huge demand and knew it was time to expand, so we secured and opened two additional locations---downtown Sarasota and now, Lakewood Ranch,” Mark says. “It's exciting to help inspire this community and we’re inspired by it, in fact, the most satisfying part of all of this is not the business success, it's the joy we feel when we see our members achieve such terrific, sometimes unbelievable results. I absolutely love our members." Heather agrees. "Now that all three locations are open and really rockin', I feel so fortunate to be here working with such amazing people, day in and day out," she says. They’re expanding for a reason: demand. So, or the uninitiated, why Orange Theory? The heart-rate-based 60-minute training sessions can burn between 500 to 1,000 calories and indeed, calories continue to burn up to 36 hours after the workout, OT owners say, adding members can lose 8 pounds a week. The science of excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) takes your results to new heights in this exciting group fitness concept. You will feel new energy and see amazing results with only 2 to 4 workouts per week, owners say. Sign up for a free class at one of their locations including the latest at 5496 Lena Road (SR 70), Bradenton, next to PDQ, which just opened in January, with hours Mon. – Friday, 4:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday 6:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Customers can now get Joyce Farms Naked Organic Chicken, Local NON-GMO Grass-Fed Beef, High Plains Bison and Bison Sausages, and Niman Ranch Bacon and Cage-Free Eggs. “I finally found a source that raises livestock, traditionally, humanely and sustainably. If you are going to eat meat, do your research and make sure you know where your food is coming from,” says owner Sharyn Vross. “It took me a while to add protein to the mix, simply because I wanted to find the best of the best just like my produce and it was worth the wait. Big ‘Florida Legacy Trail’ News
T
he Florida Legacy Trail has a plethora of great news to report. The FLT was recently awarding of the Florida Bicycle Association’s 2015 Trails Promoter of the Year honor for its work, like others statewide, in establishing new trails or expand existing ones.
Also new is that announcement that the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) was” terminating efforts to acquire the rail corridor from its owner, CSX Railroad, and returning that process back to Sarasota County.” As they shared in a recent newsletter while it “remains unclear what progress, if any, FDOT made in acquiring any unused rail corridors from CSX …the County is now back in the conductor seat for the trail extension. They have reaffirmed their intent to partner with The Trust for Public Land to promptly restart discussions with CSX.” And speaking of the county, Sarasota County Commissioners have “listed the extension of The Legacy Trail as a top priority for 2016.” Meanwhile, the Florida Greenway and Trails Foundation have “selected southwest Florida as one of their focus areas for 2016.” This endorsement could mean the “FGTF could be a very strong ally to use the SUN Trails program funds controlled by FDOT for The Legacy Trail extension.” And, importantly, the Florida Greenway and Trails Council’s newly adopted criteria formula may mean a “potential funding source for the extension of The Legacy Trail.” For all the latest updates from The Legacy Trail, visit FriendsOfTheLegacyTrail.org

n homage to spring, Jana Marie’s Esthetics is offering a ‘Flower Power’ facial for March and April. Jana says the flower mask “harnesses the power of 12 flowers including rose hip, cactus flower, hibiscus, blue lotus, white frangipani, magnolia, passion flower, and Japanese honeysuckle.” “Flowers and pampering, a combination that is slightly dreamy. The exotic, pro-youth mask uses second-generation alpha hydroxyl acids (AHAs) for powerful, yet gentle effectiv¬eness,” Jana says. According to Jana, rose hip is a powerful source of vitamin c and potent antioxidants and contains trans-retinoic acid, responsible for skin rejuvenation, as well as high levels of essential fatty acids, and anti-inflammatory properties to regenerate cells, improve elasticity and reduce the formation of wrinkles. The combination of pyruvic acid from hibiscus chalices and phytic acid provide natural antioxidants that stimulate collagen production, and provide skin lightening, healing and hydrating benefits. “The Flower Harvest complex is derived from three exotic flowers native to Australia and works to synthesize collagen, elastin and keratin, as well as fight photo aging with potent antioxidants and phytosterols,” she explains. “The mask works with all skin types and is effective in brightening skin tone, smoothing and firm texture, and leaving skin radiant and healthy.” Normally an $85 facial, during March and April the cost is $65. Visit FloridaEsthetician.org for details.

New Owner at Bradenton Pure Barre
Sweetest Hangover
N
ew Pure Barre owner Alexandra Nickolai wants folks to know she’s bringing an exciting and awesome new energy to the studio where in less than an hour, “you will achieve a full-body workout concentrating on the areas women struggle with the most: hips, thighs, seat, abdominals and arms.”
T
here’s a new hip, and smart way to recover after an epic, one-for-the-record-books girl’s night out where maybe there was a little too much wine or one too many martinis.
“Wine, any alcohol, is a diuretic and causes dehydration,” Fernando Vega of Hydr8 Hydration Center and Recovery Lounge says. Dehydration occurs when your body loses more fluid and electrolytes than it is taking in. If you don’t replace these fluids quickly, you may get dehydrated. After a night (or nights) of over-indulging often comes the dreaded hangover with symptoms including headaches at best and feeling like you’ve got food poisoning at worst. At Hydr8 you’ll receive 60-minute intravenous treatments to get re-hydrated with fluids the body needs under the supervision of a board-certified medical doctor and a registered nurse. And the setting is at once comfortable and luxurious.
The Pure Barre technique is low-impact, protecting your joints by avoiding any bouncing or jumping. Each strength section of the workout is followed by a stretching section in order to create long, lean muscles without bulk. The technique works to defy gravity by tapering everything in and lifting it up. The concentration involved while taking Pure Barre allows you to block "life" out for the hour, creating the mental benefits similarly obtained by the practice of yoga or meditation. A transformed body and a clear head in just one hour—it doesn't get much better than this. Utilizing the ballet barre to perform isometric movements, the workout lifts your butt, tones your thighs, abs, arms and burns fat, fast. One month of unlimited classes for new Pure Barre clients is $99. Pure Barre is located at 6745 Manatee Ave. West. For more information call 941-792-8663 or visit PureBarre.com/Fl-Bradenton

Each room comes equipped with 60-inch Smart TV’s so the group can enjoy unlimited streaming of favorite shows or movies.
“Our goal is to help our clients not only lose weight, but learn how to keep it off,” says Whole Self Medical Director Dr. Stanley Forwand.

CrossFit LWR: Thinking Globally, Rowing Locally

n solidarity with fitness aficionados across the planet participating in the Global Marathon Row Challenge this May, Crossfit Lakewood Ranch is hosting its own event May 14 at its Paylor Lane facility where participating members will row a marathon. Yes, a 42,195-meter row in one workout.

And with so many options – from leisurely one or two-mile walks through and under live oak canopied hammocks to good-stretch-of-thelegs multi-terrain hikes through natural, wild and exotic wetlands, prairies and pinelands – there’s a trail and road less traveled for everyone.
L
The 68-mile long Myakka River is central to a number of these parks and preserves and that’s not just because of geography, although it begins at the Manatee-Hardee county border and flows though Manatee, Sarasota, and Charlotte counties until it empties into the Charlotte Harbor and Gulf of Mexico. It is still, thankfully, largely undeveloped and in most cases along its course, protected, indeed, in the 1980s the Florida legislature officially designated it a Wild and Scenic River.
Myakka River State Park
With nearly 39 miles of loop trails and back country roads through shady live oak hammocks, pine sand hills and pine flatwoods, scrub forests, dry and sun-soaked prairies, and wetlands including freshwater marshes and cypress domes, Myakka boasts one of the most diverse and fascinating wild Florida environment, for hikers and walkers, bikers and even trails by horseback. The park features a canopy walkway – a suspension bridge and tower that provides folks with sweeping views of the forest canopy and above-the-treetop view of the park.
Be sure to check out both Sarasota and Manatee counties parks and preserves web pages where you’ll find myriad information about all the trails including equestrian, birding and hiking in the parks and preserves that pepper both counties. 32 MARCH | APRIL 2016

But it’s not just the flora that’s breathtaking, the fauna is equally impressive, indeed, animal and bird species’ at Myakka is unparalleled: deer, opossums, feral hogs, raccoons, and bobcats; reptiles a plenty; stunning wading birds, wood storks, Sandhill cranes, and even the rare roseate spoonbill; birds of prey including eagles, hawks, osprey, barred owls and vultures. And then there’s the alligator. One particular hiking trail at Myakka (actually in the Wilderness Preserve located across SR 72 from the main entrance) leads to Deep Hole, a prehistoric sinkhole rimmed with dozens, possibly hundreds of ‘gators. It’s a fascinating, if unsettling, destination. Special permits are required to enter and are limited to about 30 a day. Stop at the ranger station for more info. And before you set out on a Myakka hike, check for conditions. Some trails may be under water, especially in the rainier month of March. And always carry water and make sure to douse yourself with insect repellent with plenty of DEET.
Myakka River State Park is located at 13208 SR 72, Sarasota. For more information, call 941-361-6511 or visit FloridaStateParks.org/Park/Myakka-River
Oscar Scherer State Park
More than 15 miles of hiking trails through scrub flatwoods, where you’re likely to see the imperiled Florida scrub jay, make a trek through the pines and palmettos of Oscar Scherer State Park a one-of-a-kind experience. Six marked trails help visitors to access remote areas of the park. And for folks that are looking for a slower pace, perhaps to ramble rather than hike, each trail is peppered with benches. The 1,381-acre park features wheelchair accessible trails; the barrier-free Lester Finley Nature Trail and the Lake Osprey Trail, the latter offers visitor’s views of the uplands enveloping artesian-spring-fed waters.

Jelks Preserve
Jelks Preserve With habitat that closely resembles a Myakka River State Park hike, the 614-acre Jelks Preserve is a publicly-owned land that borders the wild and scenic river. Jelks Preserve is a quieter locale and not as populated as Myakka and provides an 8-mile network of trails – with a 3.3-mile outer loop – that traverse canopied hammocks, pine flatwoods, marshes and wetlands. Encounter swallowtail butterflies, swallow-tailed kites, gopher tortoises, charming Carolina jessamine and coral bean wildflowers. The hiking trails are unpaved but accessible and trail intersections are marked with numbered trail markers. Be aware there is limited parking. Located at 2300 N. River Road in Venice. For more information call 941-861-5000 or visit ScGov.net/ NaturalLands/Pages/JelksPreserve.aspx
Caspersen Beach
Hike the beach and bonus, sharks teeth. Caspersen Beach is famous for its shells and sharks teeth. But it’s also a lovely place to hike with trails that take folks through brackish marshes, mangrove ‘forests’, and tidal flats on sandy paths but also primarily on raised boardwalks over the dunes designed to at once protect and provide stunning views and vistas. Caspersen Beach, a National Healthy Beach certified by the Clean Beaches Council, is bounded by the Gulf of Mexico and the Intracoastal Waterway. Caspersen Beach is located at 4100 Harbor Drive, Venice. For more information call 941-861-5000 or email ParksOnline@Sgov.net.
South Venice Lemon Bay Preserve
With almost eight miles of hiking trails that meander through tidal swamps, tidal marshes, coastal hammocks and mesic and scrubby flatwoods, the South Venice Lemon Bay Preserve offers hikers and walkers the chance to encounter bald eagles, river otters, gopher tortoises and the Florida scrub-jay in terrain covered with mangroves and grasses, oaks and Curtis’s milkweed. Many trails include boardwalks. All are unpaved 34 MARCH | APRIL 2016
FIT941.COM
Also located along the Myakka River, the 6,439-acre preserve includes 70 miles of hiking and walking trails portions of which provide scenic overlooks along the banks of the Myakka River and Deer Prairie Creek. Wildlife includes gators, river otters and wild turkey and flora includes St. John’s wort, tarflower and pine lily. The trails are designed for hikers, bikers and for horseback-riders and most are considered 'primitive' and rank from easy to navigate to moderately difficult. For more information about Deer Prairie Creek Preserve, call 941-861-5000 and ask for Natural Resources.
Lake Manatee State Park
The park’s 1.7 miles of trail loop takes hikers through mesic flatwoods, depression marshes, hardwood forest and sand pine scrubs where an encounter with marsh rabbits, gopher tortoises, snakes bobcats, gray foxes, hawks and eagles are not uncommon. The park itself extends three miles along Lake Manatee and despite its name, visitors will not encounter manatees given the dam blocks access. Hikers will encounter wild, natural Florida. Lake Manatee State Park is located at 20007 State Road 64 East in Bradenton. For more information call the park at 941741-3028 or visit FloridaStateParks.org/Park/LakeManatee.
Rye Preserve
Rye Preserve is a 145 acre property located just northwest of the Lake Manatee Dam. The preserve features 3 miles of hiking and horseback trails which take visitors through sand pine scrub, xeric oak scrub, oak hammocks and the river community habitats. Hikers might encounter gopher tortoises and the Florida scrub-jay. The preserve is very much a throwback to Manatee County pioneer history and remnants of that history include the Rye Family Cemetery. The Rye Preserve is located at 905 Rye Wilderness Trail, Parrish. For more information call 941-776-0900.
Duette Preserve
The Duette Preserve, consisting of more than 21,000 acres, is the largest preserve in the Manatee County natural resource preserve system and is primarily
contained within the northeastern portion of the Lake Manatee Watershed. The preserve is rich in natural resources but also historic and cultural resources. Flora includes native plant communities and fauna includes the burrowing owl, snowy egrets, the gopher tortoise and the endangered/threatened Florida scrub jay and the eastern indigo snake. There are 3.5 miles of trails to enjoy. Note that the preserve is closed on hunt weekends. Duette Preserve is located at 249 Rawls Road, Duette. For more information call 941-737-261.
Emerson Point Preserve
The 365-acre Emerson Point Preserve is nestled at the tip of Snead Island in western Palmetto. Its trails take walkers and hikers through a Florida that is at once prehistoric and historic, a place to explore – via shady, winding multi-use and raised boardwalk trails in tropical hammocks –the Portavant Temple Mound, southwest Florida's largest Native American Temple Mound and the flora and fauna of tidal canals and Terra Ceia Bay. Note that at Emerson there’s one paved trail at the entrance of the preserve which covers the whole habitat ending at Emerson Point and the North and South Restoration Trails are packed shell. Emerson Point Preserve is located at 5801 17th St. West, Palmetto. For more information call 941-721-6885. Be sure to check out both Sarasota and Manatee counties parks and preserves web pages where you’ll find myriad information about all the trails including equestrian, birding and hiking in the parks and preserves that pepper both counties.

ircuses are magical places filled with artistry. And the bodies of the performers too are works of art. Circus goers marvel not just at the illusions, tricks and skill of aerialists and trapeze artists but also the sculptured beauty of their bodies.
C
“Those breathtaking flourishes of circus performance— suspension, weightlessness, flips, tricks and inversions,” Kerry Tice says, that are seemingly reserved only for performers, are not. Every day Tice and myriad others help mere mortals fly. “All of it becomes manageable, attainable with the help of the aerial hammock,” says Tice of Circusoul. “As you gain skill you lose fear, and this is the magic of both the circus and the hammock: the return to a fearless , fierce curiosity about human potential.” Aerial yoga practitioners not only feel like performers, they are changing their bodies with a total body workout. Virtually every part of the body is engaged and required to move and stretch which helps to tone, define and re-define muscles while strengthening the core and increasing flexibility. And, according to Health Fitness Revolution, aerial yoga helps the body function better as circulation improves and re-activates our digestive and respiratory systems. Plus, aerial yoga, silks and trapeze arts are good for your mind by helping people de-stress and find balance.
Aerial Yoga Kerry says he began practicing aerial yoga after a back injury where he “received so much relief and healing,” that he was inspired to create a class, a yoga hammock, and then an aerial yoga teacher training program. “Most of us remember visiting the circus and wondering what it would be like to be the star of the show, front and center, moving through an art that took years to learn. Aerial yoga classes put you front and center and bring the aerial arts to a level of accessibility almost anyone can try,” Kerry says. “As you gain skill you lose fear and this is the magic of both the circus and the hammock: the return to fearless fierce curiosity about human potential.” Circusoul has “evolved into a nationwide network of yogis in flight,” and Kerry has been traveling to United States. training instructors.

Aerial Silks Sam Mellor of Sarasota Warriors says it’s the aerial silks/aerial arts is a “total mindbody workout as well as being incredibly therapeutic.” Sam says clients come, witness the beauty of the art and “want to be a part of it.” Soon, she says, they realize it’s at first demanding and difficult, but she adds, “I watch them put 110 percent into it and I see a huge look of triumph as a pose is achieved. I see demons slain everyday through aerial silks. This art doesn’t just teach people how to physically be strong.. this art teaches you how to overcome. This art teaches you to recognize your weaknesses, stare them in the face and move beyond them. Not only do you move beyond but you get an amazing sense of achievement and a magical “high” that comes with this art. It’s like major dopamine release here.” So physical fitness is just one part of the benefits from a circusstyle fitness regimen.

“I have taught all levels and ages on multiple aerial apparatuses and seen a common thread of joy and dedication,” Marina says. “There is something inherently rewarding and instantly gratifying in carrying oneself up a rope, or turning yourself upside down.” And incredibly beneficial to the body and the mind. Marina asked her recreational aerial silks students what they most like about aerial fitness and the answers ranged from building core and upper body strength, improved memory, the camaraderie and support of the class structure and all said they enjoyed “being challenged, feeling safe to try something new and potentially dangerous, increasing flexibility, literally and figuratively.” “Being in the air, on whatever apparatus, requires one to be fully present and aware. Aerial fitness builds body awareness, particularly in regards to proprioception; the perception of movement and spatial orientation,” she says. “And, I think, in a world that puts increasing emphasis on virtual interactions and technology-driven activities, it’s important to be in one’s body, to push one’s endurance, to challenge inner fears, to encourage novel ways to learn, and to enjoy others with a drive to do the same.”
Run Away With the Circus Kerry Tice encourages people to give aerial and acro-yoga a whirl. “Come as you are and the practice will leave you lighter and longer. We guarantee at least one giggle and are never surprised at the waves of laughter that often fill our classes,” he says. “There is an everyday magic in suspending and inverting your own perceptions. If you haven’t given aerial yoga a try, I ask you simply... Why wait?” Take it from a student of Tice’s who said that while she was trepidatious about taking an aerial class, she sooned described it as a “great experience.” “Suspension at first was scary, but we quickly became comfortable, relaxed and stretched beyond what we could imagine,” says 56-year-old Becky. “The teacher was amazing. My daughter turned me on to this, and my timid sister was blown away.” For more information, visit Circusoul at CircuSoul.com, Sarasota Warrior at SarasotaWarrior.com and Marina Luna at MarinaLuna.com.

PESTO ‘PASTA’ PRONTO! e’re taking a beautiful and delicious dish, and turning it into an even more beautiful and delicious dish, that’s super good for your body. We’re substituting the pasta with julienned zucchini and, while homemade traditional pesto is perfect as is, we’re cutting a few calories by using a light variety (if possible) Extra Virgin Olive Oil. This entire dish should take about 15-20 minutes to prepare. And, if you want your zucchini strips raw, there’s no cooking, although we like the zucchini sautéed slightly, so technically, that’s cooking!
W
ZUCCHINI ‘PASTA’
4 small or 2 large zucchini Using a julienne peeler, peel the zucchini into spaghettilike strips. If you’d like to eat this dish cold – perfect on a summer day – toss with pesto and voilà, you’re ready to eat! If you’d like the dish to be warm and the zucchini ‘noodles’ more tender, toss them in a sauté pan for 2 or 3 minutes then combine with the pesto.
Tools you will need: A food processor and a julienne peeler.
Toss in a few grape or cherry tomatoes for color and taste.
PESTO
Makes 4 to 5 servings
2 cups fresh basil leaves 1 garlic cloves ¼ cups pine nuts ½ cup light Extra Virgin Olive Oil Course sea salt and freshly ground black pepper (to taste) ½ cup grated Parmigiano Reggiano or Pecorino Romano cheese Put basil, pine nuts and garlic in food processor and grind until course, then add oil and pulse until thoroughly mixed. Remove the pesto from food processor, salt and pepper to taste then gently and uniformly stir in cheese.

What you’ll ‘lose’ with this recipe by taking out the pasta: About 250 calories and 40 grams of carbohydrates per serving. Overall calories in this version of the dish are approximately 400-450 per serving, depending on how much cheese you sprinkle on it. And yes, the EVOO is high in calories because of the obvious high fat content, but this is a fat you want in your body!

While the Extreme Fitness Challenge is not an obstacle course, if “You’re tired of the monotony of a 5K race and want a little variety, this event is for you,” says Fit941 publisher and founder, Dr. Jason Cross. “And if you want to challenge your fitness, but don't consider yourself a runner or hardcore CrossFitter, this event is for you.” The family-oriented fitness event includes a standard 5K Run/Walk, though even runners, Jason says, who don’t like distance don’t have to worry, the race is broken up into smaller segments, the longest being 800 meters. The challenge tests your fitness level in different and fun ways by offering mini-workouts at points throughout the 5K course and is designed for all levels, from beginners to elite athletes. And it’s great for younger athletes, too. My 12-year-old son ran and had a blast.” The venue for the for the Fit941 Extreme Fitness Challenge, the Sarasota County-owned 360-acre Celery Fields, is a perfect location and has long attracted bikers, runners, and walkers with its sloping paths and trails. About Kristina Conn Kristina was a brave and courageous person with the most contagious personality, smile, and laugh. Cystic Fibrosis, although a huge part of her life, did not define who she was. It gave her the ability to live her life every single day to the absolute fullest without fear. She was tough, unfiltered and always told it like it was. Her love for her family and friends showed just how big her heart truly was. She was very considerate and compassionate for people whether she knew them or not. There was something undefined that drew you to her. She was a magnet you couldn’t resist. Her smile was genuine and radiant, her eyes electric blue that pierced into your soul and her laughter so infectious you couldn’t escape it. Unfortunately, Kristina lost her battle to Cystic Fibrosis on Saturday, October 3, 2015. We will always remember her; full of life, love and the most energetic spirit. MASSAGE ENVY SPA “We are proud of our team in Sarasota; they are caring, hardworking, and really concerned about our members g e t t i n g ex a c t l y w h a t t h e y w a n t f r o m t h e i r v i s i t . ” ake it from the Mayo Clinic, a massage can help with anxiety and headaches, insomnia and stress, digestive disorders and fibromyalgia, and, not surprisingly, can greatly help in healing sports injuries and soft tissue strains. But beyond the physical comfort the body enjoys during and after a massage is the feeling and sense of relaxation, comfort, and connectedness. And with the latter, connectedness, Massage Envy of Sarasota is really on to something special. In two of its three locations, Massage Envy now features couples massage rooms.
T
Co-owner Eric Seace, who with his family have owned and operated the popular Dream Weaver in St. Armand’s Circle, opened the first Massage Envy Sarasota location in 2008 and since expanded to meet client demand. Massage Envy is at once acclaimed and now, with the couple’s rooms, very much sought after.
a nice dinner and massage evening together, or sometimes a weekend getaway of a nice bike ride or walk, and a massage,” he adds. The addition of the couples rooms have only added to the popularity of Massage Envy, where clients rave about the skill, care and dedication of the 125 therapists it employs. “We are proud of our team in Sarasota; they are caring, hardworking, and really concerned about our members getting exactly what they want from their visit,” he says. “We have found that each visit from our clients is different, as their needs change from day to day, we pride ourselves on providing customized individual sessions. Our staff listens and then delivers a great experience. We are proud of the team we have developed over the last eight years.”
“We were outgrowing our 10-room clinic, so we relocated in the same plaza a few doors down increasing to 14 rooms. We are now the anchor store at the Expo on Clark, and we are very happy with our new clinic,” Eric says. “A couple’s room was added to the new space, and was an instant hit. So much so, that we reconfigured our Midtown location to accommodate couples massage as well. We have many couples who make a date night by combining 44 MARCH | APRIL 2016

Eric says Massage Envy members are as into massage as is his team, making it a part of their lives, often therapeutically. “Our members will often utilize a variety of our therapists depending on what is happening in their lives,” Eric says. “Someone might see a therapist that specializes in headaches one day, or seek someone skilled at relieving back pain, then on the next visit enjoy some reflexology on their feet.” Eric says their friendly front desk staff is “great at recommending someone to fit client needs for each visit. “Some people have their ‘go-to’ therapist, but we encourage people to try different therapists and different techniques as each has its own special benefits and characteristics,” he says. In addition to massage, Massage Envy delivers when it comes to skin care given its longstanding partnership with Murad, known as a skincare industry powerhouse. Eric says clients take advantage of affordable,
professional facials from skilled and highly trained estheticians, with protocols designed exclusively for Massage Envy by Murad. Also soon set to launch is the Expo on Clark location’s new hot stone program. “Currently our therapists are being trained, our equipment has already been installed,” Eric says. All that glitter is not just for show in competitive dance.
by Kourtney Kalahar he decision to enter their child into a competitive dance program can be a perplexing proposition for parents. Competitive dance today is not a new option for children; however it has become a more popular option due to many television programs and today's media. These popular television programs both romanticize and deglamorize competitive dance, often misrepresenting the rehearsal schedules, the instructors, the awards and the competitions themselves.
T
While competitive dance may be somewhat foreign to many parents, a child's participation can bring the same familiar lessons and benefits as 48 MARCH | APRIL 2016
competing in any team sport. Before you assume competitive dance is all about tiny crystal laden costumes, heavy makeup and fake eyelashes adorning your bun-headed daughter, there are some amazing benefits you need to know about. Improved Physical Health Dancing is a highly physical activity, and children who take dance lessons regularly should expect to see a significant improvement in their overall physical health. According to many medical experts, regular dance practice can increase your child's flexibility, range of motion, physical strength and stamina. The repetitive movements involved in dance can improve muscle

tone, correct poor posture, increase balance, coordination, and improve overall cardiovascular health. For children who don’t get enough exercise or are overweight, dance can help them to lose weight and improve their eating habits. Mental Health Benefits In addition to being a physical activity, dancing is also a highly social activity. Dance lessons can help children improve their social and communication skills, learn how to work as part of a team, develop a greater sense of trust and cooperation and make new friends. If your child is shy or has social anxiety, enrolling her in dance can encourage her to reach out of their comfort zone and communicate with other children. This will help reduce her anxiety about new people or places. Dance can also help to alleviate fears related to performing in front of an audience. As children adjust to the movements and postures required in dance, they also begin to get a better sense of their bodies which helps them become more comfortable in their own skin. Lots of confidence and self-esteem are enhanced through dance instruction. Educational Benefits Becoming a skilled dancer requires practice, discipline and focus; skills that can be useful in other areas of your child's life. Competitive dance can help to spark creativity in young children and help them to develop an appreciation for the arts. Although choreography is a big part of dance, students also have the ability to offer input and add creative elements to their numbers. More importantly, dance is an art tied to “feeling the music and expressing themselves through the music. This allows each dancer to have the unique ability to express themselves in highly individual and creative ways. The bottom line: students who regularly participate in dance lessons typically tend to perform better academically than their nonparticipating peers. Social Skills Try sharing dressing room pace with between 30-100 girls that all need to access the few mirrors that are
available and the single stall bathroom that is offered. Or imagine a backstage crowded with dancers, sets, props and technical crew members, all working, stretching, and setting up before a performance. What you have is organized chaos and with that can cause a lot of upset dancers and competition staff. Having backstage manners means that you understand the concept of personal space and not invading the space of others, not just your fellow teammates, but opposing teams as well. Dance manners require patience, politeness, and staying calm under pressure while still exuding class and grace.
While competitive dance may be somewhat foreign to many parents, a child's participation can bring the same familiar lessons and benefits as competing in any team sport. Teamwork is another social skill that is learned through being a competition dancer. Dance develops teamwork and empathy for others. Understanding the components of a dance number made up of 10 -15 dancers goes a long way in socializing children and helping them gain a focus of something bigger than themselves. Competitive dance teaches the critical thinking necessary to see “the big picture.” So many of these skills transfer to life and will come in handy for anyone who has ever been in a stressful situation. If you are uncertain about enrolling your child in competitive dance out of a fear of the unknown, rest assured. As long as you research and find a studio that knows the “right” way to train and help your child grow, competitive dance offers physical, mental, educational, and social benefits that every parent would be proud to provide their children. All that glitters is not just for show in competitive dance

The Move
Start by lying on the floor on your back, elbows bent holding the weights straight up. Sit up, bend your knees and feet go flat on the floor. As you reach a full sit-up, punch your right arm diagonal across your body, and slightly twist your body. Go back to center and then punch your left arm diagonal across your body and twist slightly that way. Return back to center, and slowly and controlled, return back to the starting position.

Repeat this move for 10 repetitions and three sets. As you get stronger, add repetitions. Note: To add resistance, you can also gradually increase the weights, and alternate with doing the move rapidly, then slowly. Orange Theory Fitness Regional Manager Heather Flannagan, who is an NPTI Colorado Personal Trainer and AFAA TRX Certified shares her Weighted Sit-up Cross Punch move which she describes as an exercise that’s “good to the core.”
