Staying healthy during the holidays?

We’ve got this. ‘Healthy holidays’ doesn’t have to be an oxymoron. Yes, it’s that time of the year when we get together with family and friends and we eat and we drink, and we drink and we eat some more. Over the course of the holiday season, from Thanksgiving through the New Year, lots of us end up with a few extra inches on the waistline. It’s so much easier to pile on the pounds than it is to take them off! photograph by John Joseph Revisky with parents Bob and Felicity Stack, and their sons, Walter and Amadeus.

obyn Natherson is a senior at Riverview High School in the International Baccalaureate Program. Robyn is in her second year as the captain of the Riverview Girls Cross Country squad at Riverview. She and her team have qualified for the state meet for three consecutive years. Robyn’s personal record in the 5k is 19:53. Robyn will be pursuing a degree in aerospace engineering. State, County in Legacy Trail Land Purchase Discussions

L

ast spring Sarasota County Commissioners endorsed a plan to extend The Legacy Trail into downtown Sarasota and gave the go-ahead to begin land purchase negotiations. Meanwhile, the Florida Department of Transportation had begun its own negotiations with CRX on the possible purchase of 100 miles of rail corridor, which happens to include the intended 7.5-mile Legacy Trail extension. According to the Friends of the Legacy Trail website, it was informed by Sarasota County officials of FDOT’s “interest in multiple rail corridors” with CSX indicating it is willing to allow the state to potentially make an offer before the company engages with Sarasota on its cost sharing land appraisal. FDOT is in a “review” process with no indication when the review will be complete and it’s unclear how negotiations will proceed, but the Florida Legacy Trail has said it believes “the involvement of FDOT in the process is a positive factor in our effort to extend the trail.” For more information about The Legacy Trail visit FriendsOfTheLegacyTrail.org.

antra Fitness, aka ‘Pilates on Steroids,’ prides itself on not only helping clients get in shape, but on helping to promote a healthier lifestyle in general. Having ended summer with a bang and welcoming fall with open (toned) arms, Mantra implemented a six-week fitness challenge. Members of the challenge were encouraged to attend Mantra classes two to four times a week where they were pushed to achieve their goals and were measured each week to track their progress. To help with the health and diet side of the challenge, Mantra hired certified health coach and blogger (thenaturalee.com), Ashlee Cassidy, to give health and food goals throughout the challenge. The results were incredible! Each person saw weight loss, a decrease in inches, and/or an overall positive change to their daily eating habits. One member of the challenge, Jamie Becker, really stood out. Jamie was a contestant in Sarasota’s CANDance competition, a charitable event to raise money for AIDS, and wanted to be in tiptop shape when she went on stage. With the help of Mantra, the former Miss Florida was able to lose more than 10 pounds and 11 inches over the six-week period! Congratulations Jamie!

This alternative technique is used as a tool to demonstrate to people how their dietary and lifestyle habits may be influencing their health. It gives the client a better understanding of how and where to make appropriate adjustments in their life in order to achieve optimum health and wellness, while simultaneously preventing the onset of disease. Viva la Taqueria!

P

oppo's Taqueria has ventured into the UTC area with a new location at 8471 Cooper Creek Boulevard. Over time a good restaurant will take on a life and personality of its own. During the past few years, Poppo’s has gone from an all-family crew of owner-operators with some strongly held principles and nostalgia for San Francisco Taquerias, to a multi-restaurant operation, employing dozens of wonderful people. If you're looking for a new and fresh concept in Mexican street food, Poppo's Taqueria will delight you with their all natural, ‘mostly organic’ options. Poppo's offers a variety of antibiotic and hormone-free meats, as well as Tempeh for vegetarian and vegan friends.

LIKE A DOG ON A BONE WE ARE HERE FOR YOU

They are known for using only fresh ingredients. The entire menu gluten free, they strive to use organic produce whenever possible. With Poppo's it is the attention to detail that makes this Taqueria stand out. (One of the local favorites is the use of fresh burrito and flour shells made fresh by a local company, Sugar Cubed.) So no matter your diet or preference, Poppo's is a great alternative to processed and chain Mexican fare. For more information or to find the nearest location, go to PopposTaqueria.com.

Giving Back Year-Round

M

any businesses look to give back to the community during the holidays, but at Garden of the Heart, that mission is year-round.

Supporting Special Olympics

M

embers of the Special Olympics Florida – Manatee County bowling team are wearing new uniforms thanks to a $1,500 donation from Neal Communities, southwest Florida’s premier, private homebuilder. Special Olympics Florida – Manatee County is a program that provides people with disabilities the chance to participate in sports competitions and an outlet for socialization and friendship. The program currently serves 221 athletes throughout Manatee County and offers 13 different sports. “The Manatee program is operated entirely by volunteers who are dedicated to providing training and competition for our athletes at no cost to them or their parents,” says program director Sue Fitzgerald. Neal Communities warranty coordinator and Special Olympics volunteer Audrey Shell says she’s moved by her company’s generosity especially to an organization that is near and dear to her heart. Shell, certified coach and chaperone for Special Olympics competitions locally and statewide, bowls on a unified team with Special Olympics athletes. The State Games on Nov. 15 and 16 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando will include bowling, softball, powerlifting and gymnastics. The Special Olympics provides year-round sports training and competition to children and adults eight years of age and older with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Over 120 people from the community give their time to volunteer each year. To learn more about the Special Olympics Florida – Manatee County program, please visit SpecialOlympicsManatee.org. 20 HOLIDAY 2015

Owner Cheryl Chaffee and Harriet Roberts created the Karma Yoga Outreach Program which provides four free yoga classes weekly to veterans and their families in Sarasota, Bradenton and North Port, five yoga classes weekly to children with autism in Myakka City and they also provides yoga to people with Parkinson’s Disease at the North Port Yoga Center with Sarasota classes coming this winter. Additionally, volunteers sort food and fill backpacks for distribution at Sarasota County schools, and volunteer on All Faiths’ Food Bank’s Sprout trucks to bring fresh produce to people in need. On Nov. 9, Garden of the Heart partners with Goodwill Manasota for the 24-hour giving challenge ‘Strike a Pose for Vets,’ where people post a photo of themselves doing a yoga pose on Facebook, and for each picture, local corporate sponsors make a donation to the program, which is entirely dependent on donations. On Thanksgiving, Thursday Nov. 26, Garden of the Heart holds its annual Thanksgiving Day Yoga Workshop from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Admission is a donation of food items for All Faiths’ Food Bank. The workshop is open to all, but reservations must be made in advance. Visit GardenOfTheHeartYoga.com for more information or to register/volunteer.

Truffle Hunt for Charity

C

hef Christopher Covelli, of Sarasota, and his culinary students in Lucca, Italy are currently hunting the rare, elusive and prized, not to mention incredibly expensive, white truffle. Found only during the fungi’s short season which ends in December, the truffle is the most covered of all mushroom-like fungi and can only be found in Italy. It’s expected that Covelli will ship the two pounds of white truffles he hopes to collect for the Florida Winefest & Auction’s Fourth annual Wild Truffle Wine Dinner slated for Nov. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at Mattison’s Forty-One. The exclusive five-course dinner presented by celebrated local chefs Covelli and Paul Mattison. The white truffle dinner will include perfect pairings of superior wines presented by Banfi Vintners. “We are bringing Tuscany to the guests’ tables,” says Covelli. “I’m saving them the costs of a hotel and plane flight and allowing them to dine locally on this delicious morsel direct from Tuscany!” Proceeds will benefit Florida Winefest & Auction, a nonprofit that provides funding to qualified charitable organizations for programs assisting disadvantaged children. Tickets to this once-in-a-lifetime dining experience are $250 per person, and space is limited to only 100 guests. For more information, visit FloridaWinefest.org or call 941-952-1109.

Janet was recently trained in a new software program designed to help her provide her customers with current and accurate information, which she says is key to determining the true value of a house given the constant and fluctuating changes in the real estate market. Without accurate and up-to-date data, it is difficult to know the current value, or worse yet, assume the wrong value of a home. Helping to Heal the Pain

S

arasota Orthopedic Associates is pleased to announce a procedure for people suffering from chronic pain. Some 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain causing 40 percent of work related absences. Worldwide, chronic pain affects more people than suffers of heart disease, cancer, and diabetes combined. A Spinal Cord Stimulator, or SCS, sends electrical impulses to prevent pain signals being received by the brain. Nomen Azeem, MD is not only the first physician from St. Petersburg to to North Port to perform this procedure with the protégé MRI Spinal Cord Stimulator, he was also the first in southeast Louisiana, prior to his arrival in Sarasota. This implant device not only helps to alleviate chronic pain, but provides Dr. Azeem the ability to perform future clinical advancements without future surgery. Dr. Azeem has seen a vast increase in quality of life for many of his patients, without having to resort to invasive surgery or increased medication. He is an expert in minimally invasive procedures for treating chronic back pain with or without leg pain, chronic neck pain with or without arm pain, pain that persists after back or neck surgery, peripheral neuropathy, Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD), Occipital Neuralgia, and Post-Herpetic Neuralgia. Adventure Trip

CLIMB THE BOLIVIAN ANDES; CHANGE A VETERAN’S LIFE HERE AT HOME

a i v i l o B

he 10-day trek into the Bolivian Andes promises to be an epic and once-in-a-lifetime adventure, albeit one with a mission that will at once humble and forever change the adrenaline-seeking soul. Touching the cloud forests atop Aguja Negra and Cabeza del Cóndor, soaring nearly 18,000 feet into the heavens, adventurers who make this journey will find thrill beyond measure, but are doing so much more; they’re helping to change the lives of local veterans. A portion of the fee for the odyssey goes directly to support GreenZone Heroes Veterans’ Initiatives.

GreenZone Heroes (GZH) is a Sarasota-based obstacle course race and adventure company with a public mission to fill gaps in local veterans’ services. GreenZone Hereos seeks to strengthen community relationships through community building events that promote local assets with a focus on health and well-being. The GreenZone Heroes Games, held each season, feature obstacle course racing, local food, local music and entertainment, family FunZone and the Veteran Connection. Other yearly activities include adventure walks and hikes, survival courses, land navigation and adventure trips, like this Bolivia Trek.

Valley of the Moon , La Paz 26 HOLIDAY 2015 FIT941.COM

by Ellyn Santiago

“Embedded in GreenZone Heroes corporate DNA is a commitment to using our corporate profits to fund gaps in regional veteran services,” says CEO John Krotec. Every person that participates, volunteers, or sponsors a GZH event “plays an active role in helping,” John says. And that certainly includes the adventurers who’ll trek to Bolivia in January. The trip itinerary itself is a read almost as exciting as the sojourn will surely be: Fly into El Alto, Bolivia and stay at the Rosario hotel near the ‘Witches Market;’ tour the city of La Paz and the Valley of the Moon; travel to the Copacabana on Lago Titicaca with an afternoon trek into Orca del Inka and Calvario; next travel by boat to Sun Island and then off to make base camp at Condoriri (Cabeza del Cóndor); on the sixth day, climb to Aguja Negra, elevation nearly 5,000 meters. Nights spent under pitchdark skies punctuated with millions of stars and days spent trekking through diverse biosphere where, as John Krotec says, one can witness “the vast scale of the Earth amid a forest of zephyr clouds, communing with the majesty of the creation.” On the eighth day, trek downhill to a glacial lagoon and on day nine, bike

downhill to Coroico on a road known to be perhaps one of the most treacherous in the world, often called El Camino de la Muerte. John says this odyssey for adventure seekers and mountaineers will be challenging and unforgettable. “This is an opportunity for an incredible journey and become immersed in an amazing culture all the while helping veterans in your community,” says John. “It’s a win-win.” The GreenZone Heroes Bolivia Odyssey is slated for Jan. 8 through Jan. 18, 2016. The cost is $2,900 plus airfare with $500 of each traveler’s fee going directly to the GZH Veterans’ Initiative program. The initiatives supported by trip are designed to be sustainable and long-lasting programs like alternative therapies for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Sarasota Food Hub / Veteran Farm, Greenzone Heroes Hydroponic Farm with Veterans for Common Sense, Vet- toChefs Mobile Food Truck, Extreme Sports for PTSD, Marriage and Family Skill-Building Weekends and ‘Compassion Rising’ which offers opportunities for homeless and dishonorably-discharged veterans. “I’ve learned the power of volunteerism and believe volunteers are the greatest ambassadors of their communities showing tireless dedication and sacrificing their important time for the benefit of others,” John says. When people join the GZH Volunteer Corp, they help veterans the most through a patented methodology which will be released on the website this January.

sunday night prep to eat healthy all week “It is really hard to eat healthy on a consistent basis without proper planning. Convenience and instant gratification are so embedded in our society that the thought of taking the time to plan and prepare meals can seem daunting,” Alexis says.

t’s a Sunday. With the holidays here, the week ahead is busy, busy so planning the week’s healthy meals, to avoid fast food temptation, may be challenging. Taking a couple of hours on a Sunday prepping and cooking for the week may not sound like much fun, but with some creative and smart time-saving steps, the task doesn’t have to be daunting.

I

Getting It Done Ahead of Time

One way to handle the protein for a number of dinners is surprisingly simple, taking chicken breast, for example. Cutting the organic chicken into bite sized pieces and separating into three or four mounds, season each differently. Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil and fold the foil so there are sections for each serving of seasoned chicken and roast. Consider roasting vegetables at the same time: toss favorites with olive oil and sea salt and pepper. Veggie portions may be added to each of the different roasted chicken sections, placed in containers and frozen. Try making a huge pot of brown rice while you’re at it and store in the fridge for easy re-heating. Alexis Weedo, co-owner of CrossFit Lakewood Ranch, agrees that Sunday prep is a smart way to go: “If you have just an hour or two on a Sunday afternoon, you can easily set yourself up for a week of healthy meals.” “It is really hard to eat healthy on a consistent basis without proper planning. Convenience and instant gratification are so embedded in our society that the thought of taking the time to plan and prepare meals can seem daunting,” Alexis says. “And mixed messages about what is and isn't healthy only make the task more difficult. But it doesn't have to be!! It is all a matter of what is important enough for you to make time for and it doesn’t have to be a lot.” Alexis’ recipe for crockpot shredded chicken makes four to five servings; enough for a week’s worth of lunches or portion out chicken servings ahead of time and mix with salads and brown rice.

Tip: Have plenty of freezer-safe plastic (or glass) containers with tight fitting lids at the ready

Crockpot Shredded Chicken Salad (the chicken will cook for 10 hours, so leave it overnight or set it up in the morning before leaving for work). Coat the bottom of your crockpot in a thin layer of light olive oil or coconut oil (quality of your fat sources matters a lot, both of these oils contain healthy fats that are good for you!) Arrange four or five organic (preferably pastured) chicken breasts, or a combination of breasts and thighs, in the pot and season with sea salt, pepper, and garlic (fresh

minced or garlic powder). Add a little sliced lemon or lime for a citrus flavor. Set the crockpot to cook on low for eight to 10 hours. Once the chicken is done, take it all out into a really big bowl and start shredding! It should come apart easily with two forks or even an electric mixer. Mix in two to three avocados and season to your liking with a little sea salt, pepper, and fresh cilantro. Use this chicken salad on top of salad greens for a clean and tasty salad complete with good protein and fats sources, or add some rice for a starchier more carbohydrate rich dish.

‘DiDi’s Dinners’ is a great solution for those pressed for time. Dorrie Parsons has spent much of her life in a kitchen, from the family restaurant in Pensacola to the nursing home she ran where healthy meal planning was a priority. Now Dorrie prepares healthy, fresh, delicious and creative meals for people who have little time to do their own meals much less meal planning and prep and she prepares meals to meet any dietary need, from meals prepared to encourage weight loss, menus for vegans or vegetarians, or specific diets like Paleo or restrictive ones like glutenfree, for example. Dorrie plans menus with clients based on their needs but is happy to offer myriad suggestions: “I say, ‘Tell me what you need’ (in your diet) and I’ll go from there … what’s freshest that day, what’s best.” Dorrie prepares meals daily with the freshest of organic foods, she never uses processed ingredients of any kind and says she sticks with ingredients that are seed-based, not grain-based. Recent main courses included almond pesto pasta, pear and pumpkin seed salad with organic honey, steamed organic winter vegetables, coconut shrimp with pear chutney and lime-ginger coleslaw. And she delivers! For more information about Dorrie and ‘DiDi’s Dinners,’ contact her at at 850-292-1379. However it happens, by investing time and preparing meals ahead of time or by enlisting help from a provider like DiDi’s Dinners, cut down on holiday stress (and unwanted holiday pounds via fast food) by doing a better job of planning healthy meals and sticking to it.

Christmas Morning Crepes

evenly with a spatula. Pour about 1/2 of the batter onto the pan and quickly slightly tip it in various directions in a circular motion to spread the batter into a thin circle.

INGREDIENTS: 1 cup gluten-free quick oats 1 1/2 cups almond or coconut or cashew milk 1/2 tbsp ground flax seeds or ground chia seeds

Cook until the edges are golden and lift up easily with a spatula. Flip and cook the other side for a few more minutes until golden.

1/2 tsp coconut oil OPTIONAL INGREDIENTS: 1 tbsp maple syrup {or agave, raw honey {highly recommend for sweet crepes}

1/8 tsp Himalayan salt Filling Options: Natural “Nutella” Spread + fresh strawberries + a few mint or basil leaves for that Christmas color DIRECTIONS Place all batter ingredients into a blender and blend into a smooth consistency. Warm up a medium-sized non-stick skillet on medium heat. Remove from heat and place the oil on the pan. Spread it around

Remove and transfer onto a plate and repeat with the remaining batter, adding a bit more oil in between each crepe. {See notes re: thinning the batter}. Enjoy! NOTES Ground flax seeds and chia seeds can thicken the batter by the time you get through the first 2/3. Keep the batter in the blender and just pour it into the pan straight from there. Then when it seems like the batter is a little too thick add a tiny splash more milk and blend quickly once again to thin out the batter. Then carry on crepe-making as normal. If you choose not to thin in out you’ll just end up with slightly thicker crepes -- they’ll still be just as delicious.

Fit941 PROFILE:

YOGA IS HOT, FIGURATIVELY AND, IN THE CASE OF ‘HOT YOGA 4 YOU,’ OPENING THIS MONTH IN SARASOTA, QUITE LITERALLY, TOO. ot Yoga classes at the new Sarasota studio, which include a series of traditional hatha yoga poses and breathing exercises, are done in a Far Infrared-Heated Room set at 100 to 105 degrees. That high heat warms muscles, prevents injury, and allows for a deeper workout while also cleansing the body as it flushes toxins. Owner and instructor Yolanda Nash says Hot Yoga is for people of all ages and all ability levels. She says each posture stretches, strengthens and prepares specific muscles, ligaments, and joints needed for the next posture all while stimulating organs, glands, and nerves, moving freshly oxygenated blood throughout the body hence restoring systems to healthy working order.

“What we bring is the sense of community in the studio,” Yolanda says. “People have said to us many, many times, ‘there’s just something about your studio.’

to enjoy their experience while understanding that it’s a non-competitive atmosphere.” Native New Yorker, ‘yogini’, Reiki master and married mother of two, Yolanda began teaching yoga nearly 16 years ago and has taught “highly-developed and competitive” yoga from coast to coast and Canada. In 2002, she opened her first studio in Rockville Centre, New York and within six years, had opened a second studio in Rego Park, Queens (New York City). Yolanda is also a married mother of two young children, and it was the latter that led her to expand her passion for yoga to include certifications in pre- and post-natal yoga and also encouraged her to be trained to teach yoga to children. Yolanda is also a teacher’s teacher; her guidance and instruction has helped launch the careers of many New York-based yoga teachers. And while she has not left New York completely behind -- she still manages her Hot Yoga 4 You locations there -- sunny Sarasota beckoned. Hot Yoga 4 You Sarasota, which is located at 4021 Clark Road in Sarasota at the Expo on Clark Plaza at the intersection of Sawyer Road, is slated for a Nov. 20 grand opening. An open house is set for Nov. 19 from 6 to 8 p.m. Yolanda says there’s already been a lot of excitement about the opening.

Hot Yoga classes, at 60 minutes each, deliver “total health through the balancing and strengthening of every system in the body,” and helps prevent injuries while promoting weight loss and limiting the negative effects of aging. In addition to the far-infrared-heated room, the studio has a UV Air Treatment System that employs ultraviolet light which works to kill bacteria, viruses, mold and germs and as a bonus, helps to deodorize air. Yolanda says yoga students “love knowing that when they breathe deeply the air is fresh and clean” and adds that far-infrared heat is an ideal way to heat a human body, allowing it to expel toxins, heavy metals, and other pollutants from the body in a natural way. Far-infrared heat is used to combat cardiovascular risk factors including helping to lower blood pressure, improve blood circulation while assisting in the reduction of pain, stress and fatigue and when the concept is applied to yoga, it works much like the sun – without the damaging UV rays. Set to open November 20, Hot Yoga 4 You is one of the only hot yoga studios in Sarasota to incorporate both these systems – UV air treatment and far infrared heat – to enhance the yoga experience. But it’s more than just the heat and technology that make the studio special. “What we bring is the sense of community in the studio. Our teachers really work hard and care so much,” Yolanda says. In fact, in a recent online review, a client described a Hot Yoga 4 You instructor as an “amazing, caring teacher who memorized every student’s name so she can personally encourage us as class went along.” “Some clients may just want a hard-core workout while others are looking for a place to de-stress, detox, and for some, healing. We make time for every client. We’re nurturing and we find that connecting with clients in that way makes all the difference,” Yolanda says. “I want clients

“There is great buzz,” she says. “We’re all super-psyched. We want you to ‘come and lose the weight of the world.’ For more information, call 941-626-6396, check the Hot Yoga 4 You website at hotyoga4you.com, and ‘like’ their Facebook page at hotyoga4yousrq.

f you’re like everyone else, you’ve probably given up on stretching altogether. You’ve stretched ‘til the cows come home with zero results. Perhaps it’s important to decide what results you want. There are stretches that are specifically designed to increase range of motion and strengthen muscle groups.

PNF

by Ellyn Santiago

STRETCHING

"PNF has been one of the most effective and efficient stretching techniques for adding flexibility and even strength at the end range of motion for clients,” Cross says.

For example, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) is a stretching and flexibility technique designed to strengthen and enhance passive and active range of motion in targeted muscle groups. A more advanced type of flexibility training, the technique was first developed to aid in rehabilitation and to help improve motor performance. PNF is an extremely effective form of flexibility training in that it can greatly increase range of motion. The techniques involved can be both active, when muscle contraction is voluntary, or passive, when there’s no muscle contraction. PNF is ideal for flexibility training because it promotes muscular inhibition. It’s the inhibition of the muscle tightening reflex that allows a deeper stretch. According to the National Institutes of health, “research indicates that PNF stretching, both the ContractRelax (CR) and Contract-Relax Agonist Contract (CRAC) methods are effective in improving and maintaining ROM, increasing muscular strength and power, and increasing athletic performance, especially after exercise. However, proper protocol and consistency must be followed to attain and maintain the benefits of PNF techniques.” Getting technical, the isometric (resistance without movement) and concentric (contraction) muscle behaviors executed before a passive stretch help to bring about ‘autogenic inhibition’ or reflex relaxation. An isometric contraction is called the ‘hold’ and the concentric is a ‘contract.’ PNF employs the contracting, holding and passive stretching techniques. Each move begins with a 10-second passive stretch. All stretches are best done with a partner, though a fixed object may be used.

Two Types of PNF Stretches

In the Contract-Relax or CR technique, you first isometrically contract the target muscle and immediately follow 40 HOLIDAY 2015

that with a slow, passive stretching of the target muscle. For example, the CR for hamstring you’d lie on your back with one leg flat on the mat and the other in the air, at a 90-degree angle. A partner would gently and carefully push your vertical leg forward until you feel the stretch; hold for 10 seconds. Then contract the hamstring being stretched by pushing back or resisting your partner's resistance with less than 30 percent of your total strength for up to eight seconds. This shouldn’t hurt. Then relax and have partner push your limb again and hold for six to eight seconds. Repeat the contract and relax three or four more times before starting on the other leg. In the Contract-Relax Agonist Contract or CRAC technique, follow the first two steps of the CR technique except you actively contract the opposing muscle group. So, while this stretch is like the CR, or hold-relax, follow it by immediately contract the antagonist muscle for three to six seconds, pushing the joint into a new range.

A particular favorite of Dr. Cross’ is the doorway tight hamstring stretch: you lie on your back in a doorway; put one leg up on the door frame so that your leg is resting against the wall and put the other through the doorway. The knee stays bent and your foot remains flat with your bottom close to the wall with tension on the hamstring. Allow a stretch for 10 seconds. Relax, contract against the wall for seven to eight seconds, relax leg again, then lower the other leg to the floor to increase the stretch. When you repeat, shift your bottom even closer to the wall to facilitate tightening while increasing the stretch. Repeat three to four times. “When a client has tight hamstrings and has been unable to improve it with standard stretches, the doorway stretch demonstrates just how fast PNF stretching works.”

Clubs Rule at the Suncoast Half Marathon by Ellyn Santiago

here’s still time to register for the January 2016 event at Lakewood Ranch

“Yes, you can,” says Karen Haynes, the face behind the race, Active Suncoast’s ‘Suncoast Half Marathon’ set for Jan. 24, 2016. “A lot of people look at these events and think you have to be fast, skinny, and Kenyan, a runner. But now that there’s been a proliferation of these events and a lot women, especially over 30-somethings, are finding it’s a great way to be social, be with your friends but also this is an activity that’s going to have long term positive health benefits, whether you run or walk, we want you to be inspired to just get up and do it.” Active Suncoast Foundation is a notfor-profit whose mission is to “promote, 42 HOLIDAY 2015

educate and foster active healthy lifestyles and communities.” Epitomizing fitness of body and mind, Karen, who founded the group in 2009, is singularly motivated to help others achieve that level of discipline and devotion to a healthy lifestyle that is driven by activity hence Suncoast’s focus on getting people moving; various marathons and races are the heart of the Active Suncoast Foundation. And the 2016 Suncoast Half Marathon is a highlight. The half marathon, held in Lakewood Ranch, is described as the ‘best kept secret of the winter.’ A 13.1 mile race that feels big, but is noted for its smalltown charm vibe, runners can expect a truly beautiful USA Track & Fieldcertified course though the manicured

boulevards of Lakewood Ranch. And featuring a post-race celebration featuring live music, craft beer and delicious food, the marathon is expected to draw not only hundreds of runners, but hundreds of cheering spectators and fans. The awards include Overall, Master, Grand Master, Senior Grand Master and Veteran Grand Master as well as sixdeep group awards for age groups 14 and under, then in five-year increments age 80 and older. New this year are local running club awards for the first local running or triclub male and female finishers in each category and age group. Karen explains: “We have always had great support from the running clubs in Sarasota

and Bradenton.” The Lakewood Ranch Running Club has hosted the half marathon since its inception, it is part of the Zoomers and Bradenton runners’ club race series and the event was recently sanctioned by the Manasota Track Club. Karen says that in appreciation of all of the local clubs who are running and doing the vents from clubs in Sarasota and Manatee counties, this year there will be Local Club Runner Award Categories: “Besides all of the regular age group awards and category awards, we will recognize from each category and age group, male and female, the top local club runner …for example, it could be the first overall female maybe she is in local club and she wins first overall. But if she’s not in a local club, the next finisher female who is in a club will be the first overall female club champion and the same will happen for each age group.” The Active Suncoast Foundation doesn’t just hold race events, says Karen, a US Navy Reserve captain, naval aviator and official for USA Triathlon. The foundation gives back to the community in myriad ways that reflect its mission and, in just the past two or three years, has donated more than $33,000 to different local running clubs, local school and children’s groups and agencies that

Being a part of helping in a program like kids running on the beach is great,” Karen says. “If the kids are participating, sometimes that will help bring parents into a more active lifestyle, too.” Active Suncoast Foundation has also supported various Sarasota and Bradenton races, runs and triathlons with water stations and has presented health and wellness fairs. “We try and do a lot to promote our mission,” Karen says. “Getting off the couch!” For more information about the Suncoast Half Marathon visit the website at activesuncoast.com.

by Jaqlyn Tinaro

LOW T famous Park Avenue urologist has been quoted as saying a guy’s testosterone level is the dipstick of his health. And while it’s tempting to joke about the unfortunate side effects men suffer when their testosterone levels are low, this is no laughing matter.

A

What’s testosterone and why is it important? The sex hormone testosterone is vital to the development of men’s bodies. Affecting women as well, testosterone assists in creating muscle mass and strong bones that help support internal organs, which can boost athletic performance. And, most notably, is necessary for sperm development and controls sexual drive and sexual performance of men and women.

What are the symptoms of low testosterone? Symptoms of low testosterone include low energy, little to no sex drive, infertility, erectile dysfunction, hair loss, increase of body fat and breast tissue, slow metabolism, loss of muscle mass or inability to gain muscle, decrease in bone mass, decrease in height, low self esteem, depression, irritability and lack of focus. Low testosterone also puts one 44 HOLIDAY 2015

GOT YOU DOWN? at risk for obesity, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and thyroid dysfunction. Dr. James DeRespino, Center for Men’s Health founder and medical director, says the most commonly misdiagnosed disorder in men is mid-life depression. “I’ve seen thousands of male patients at this point and they usually come in with low energy, no motivation and simply depressed that they don’t have the energy to do the things they used to,” he says. “Testosterone therapy changes that almost immediately.”

What causes Low T? Processed refined sugar- increases insulin levels which is a testosterone inhibitor. Soy - Contains Phyto-estrogens that throw off natural hormone production and conversion, according to the National Center of Bio-Technology information (NCBI), researchers have found that 95% of men who consumed as little as 120 mg of soy a day had a decrease in testosterone. Soy is common in many food products including ones that are not labeled ‘soy.’ Stress- Harvard Researchers have found a link between mental, emotional and physical stress depleting the body of water soluble nutrients including amino

FIT941.COM

acids which are hormone building blocks. Stress can slow down digestion which affects nutrient absorption which can affect the adrenal and reproductive systems and in turn directly affect sex drive and performance. Xeno-estrogens – Another study done by the National Center of Bio-Techcology (NCBI) concludes that estrogen mimicking compounds similar to soy, throw off natural testicular hormone production. This includes safflower oil, cottonseed oil, canola oil, commercially raised animal meat and dairy products (preservatives and injected hormones), non-organic coffee (commonly sprayed with pesticides), unfiltered water/tap water, commercial laundry detergents and fabric softeners, shampoos, conditioner, soaps and lotions containing parabens, phthalates, propylene glycol, BPA (plastic) and several different types of insecticides and weed killer.

How to increase testosterone According to physicians, it’s wise to have a blood or saliva test to rule out dangerously low testosterone levels. For those looking to simply boost testosterone levels, there are many ways to prompt the body to do that naturally, beginning with plenty of exercise and adequate sleep, according

to medical researchers. Consider adding a DIM (diindolylmethane) Complex supplement. This chemical is found in broccoli and cabbage and can help eliminate harmful phyto-xeno estrogens from the body. Other supplements include vitamin D, Branch Chain Amino Acids (BCAA’s), zinc (40mg max per day), magnesium and healthy fats such as avocados and almonds, professional nutritionists advise. If “clinically” low testosterone levels are present, a medical practitioner can prescribe hormone patches and creams. However these treatments can expose women and children to excess testosterone if they come in contact with the hormones, so caution with use is strongly advised. To avoid that potential contact, injections may be the safer and more expeditious way to go. Testosterone pellets contain crystalline testosterone that is implanted under the skin, slowly releasing testosterone over the course of three to six months. A short, simple procedure is done in the doctor’s office to implant the pellets under the skin, usually near the hip. These pellets are a longacting form of testosterone therapy. They should deliver a stable, steady dose of testosterone. “The majority of our patients prefer Pellet Therapy because of the ease and effectiveness of this delivery method,” says Jeanna Helper, MSN, ARNP of RevitaLife Vitality Center in Sarasota. “In addition, supplementing with Pellet Therapy is the best way to maintain optimum, steady state levels of testosterone in men and estrogen and/or testosterone in women.” The bottom line for men who are experiencing symptoms of low testosterone is to get those levels checked and begin a course of replacement …sooner rather than later.

GETTING BACK TO BASICS building an aerobic base

by Ellyn Santiago

“The concept, simply put, is to go slower in order to get faster. Usually associated with long distance runners or triathletes, base training is a set period of time during which training is kept in the aerobic zone. nderstanding the importance and relevance of aerobic base is not just for athletes and people training for specific events like marathons, but for anyone interested in fitness. The key to effective aerobic base, trainers say is discipline; it takes an abundance of patience and focus to switch gears from high intensity training and workouts to low intensity. Trainers advise that aerobic base is a slow-process, training technique that shouldn’t be hurried and according to Active.com, “the sooner you get started the faster you'll be.”

your base pace on a molecular level you’re burning more fat for energy and less muscle for energy,” Whit says.

Whit Reutlinger of Orange Theory, whose philosophy of fitness is ‘Base, Push, All Out,’ explains what aerobic base is and why it’s important.

“The difference, when we’re talking body type when we’re training somebody, for example, when you look at a sprinter’s body, an Olympic sprinter compared to an Olympic marathon runner; what do you notice about them,” Whit asks rhetorically. “The sprinter still has muscle; they’re just as lean, the marathon runner is just as lean but without any muscle on their body – they just burn through all the muscle. A marathon runner is in base pace the whole time.”

U

“Getting back to base, why that’s important? When you get back to base pace, when it comes to high intensity interval training, which is what Orange Theory is, you’ve heard of tabata (training which consists of eight rounds of ultra-high-intensity exercises in a specific 20-seconds-on, 10-seconds-off interval) where you’re getting into your anaerobic zone and you’ve heard about your aerobic threshold, so when you get back to 46 HOLIDAY 2015

“So for example, in Orange Theory, you have about a 54 minute class, within that workout you’re in your aerobic base for about half that class, about 25 to 35 minutes. By doing that, you’re going to be burning more fat than you are muscle. If you were in anaerobic for 45 minutes, that would be too much. Not only would you be gassed, but it’s also not the most efficient way to burn fat,” Whit says.

Lisea Julien, group fitness manager at Crunch in Sarasota, breaks base aerobic down to its base: “The

FIT941.COM

purpose of aerobic base training is to increase the body’s ability to use oxygen to create energy.” “The concept, simply put, is to go slower in order to get faster. Usually associated with long distance runners or triathletes, base training is a set period of time during which training is kept in the aerobic zone. An athlete might spend several months training at 60-80 percent of max heart rate, with little to no anaerobic training during this phase,” Lisea explains. “In the aerobic zone, the body has the ability to use oxygen, with fat as the fuel source, to create energy. The more work done aerobically, the more efficient the body becomes at this process. Gains in aerobic base then lead to better performance at higher anaerobic intensities.” Lisea says base aerobic training is a more efficient use of fat to create energy, which improves overall metabolism, adding that an increase in stroke volume means with each beat, the heart pumps more blood and she says that an increase in capillary density delivers more blood to working muscles. Whitney Bartlett, Director of Training Programs and Corporate Wellness New Balance, Fleet Feet and Molly's Sarasota believes “building an aerobic base is a crucial part of training for all athletes.” “I believe one of the most important benefits of a long and consistent base phase is that by slowly increasing the volume of the workout it gives the body time to adapt to the stress being placed on it. This will allow the athlete to be able to perform at high intensities and not have their bodies become overstressed which increases the chance of injury and overtraining,” Whitney says. “Becoming sidelined with an injury is an athlete's worst nightmare,” she says, “and being smart with your training to reduce that chance of injury is key in my eyes.”

Move Description The Lunge 1. Stand with your torso upright holding two dumbbells in your hands by your sides.

LUNGE TO TWISTING PRESS by Ellyn Santiago

aemian Mains, co-owner of Definition Fit of Sarasota, is well recognized face of fitness in Sarasota. Daemian, certified as both a group and personal trainer, has been in the fitness field for more than 20 years; from her beginnings as a Y cardio boxing instructor to being an International Federation of Body Building and Fitness competitor, she brings tremendous skills and strengths to the world of fitness. beginners as well as advanced. For the beginners or balance challenged, modify by holding a fixed object and using only body weight. There are several ways to perform this exercise. A more challenging variation would be a walking lunge while pressing. Another variation would be to alternate or simply do one side at a time. The twisting press is also a strength training move that works the shoulders, biceps & triceps. It is also a compound move that requires the use of the elbow and shoulder joints.

The strength-training move -- Lunge to Twisting Press -- is a combination of two separate exercises; a stationary lunge & a modified Arnold Press. The lunge is a strength training move that works the quadriceps, calves, glutes and hamstring muscles. It is a compound movement which employs both the ankle and knee joints. This movement also requires a great deal of balance and can be modified for 48 HOLIDAY 2015

2. Step forward with your right leg around 2 feet or so from the foot being left stationary behind and lower your upper body down, while keeping the torso upright and maintaining balance. Inhale as you go down. ***Do not allow your knee to go forward beyond your toes as you come down, as this will put undue stress on the knee joint. Make sure that you keep your front shin perpendicular to the ground. 3. Using mainly the heel of your foot, push up and go back to the starting position as you exhale. 4. Repeat the movement for 10-15 reps and then switch sides. The Twisting Press 1. As you start to lower your body into the lunge described above, curl your arms to your shoulders and then twist upward to a press above your head. Breathe out while performing this move. When you are in the lowest position with your legs your arms should be overhead with palms facing away from your face. 2. As you start to rise up into the beginning position, lower the weights to your sides. Breathe in. 3. Repeat the movement for 10-15 reps and then switch sides. *For the balance challenged or beginner, start with one side at a time while holding a fixed object.

goals with may help you go the extra mile. If you’re someone who can’t work with a group, then find a friend to get fit with. Having another person next to you when you work out always helps to pass the time.

3. I’m active enough in my daily life. That counts as exercise. Unless you’re shoveling heavy rock for a living, your daily activities are not enough to get your heart rate up and keep it up in the way you need to during a good workout. You’re not exercising unless your body is working hard for a prolonged period of time. Walking around the office all day simply isn’t enough.

EVERYDAY EXCUSES

(and why they’re lame)

NOT TO WORK OUT

by Chad Van Alstin

xcuses, excuses! We each have different fitness goals and workout needs, and we’ve all come up with reasons not to meet them. Whether you’re not going to the gym as much as you should or you’ve decided to wait until next week (and then the week after that) to start a new routine, it’s time to cut the crap and get motivated.

E

Below is a list of common excuses that people make every day they decided to sit on the couch instead of working out. Don’t be a victim of yourself. You can overcome these lame justifications and get motivated for fitness – all you have to do is try. 1. I’m way too busy to work out. No, you’ve just decided that working out isn’t as important as the other things you do every day. On some level, you have a point – jobs and families do take up a lot of time. But really, if you can’t find any time to get a 20 minute daily work50 HOLIDAY 2015

out in, you need to reprioritize. Exercise is as important as eating, showering, and brushing your teeth. You should look at it as something that you need to do in order to stay healthy Keep a daily log of your activities, and mark down the time of everything you do. Where can you open up fifteen minutes to fit a workout in? Remember, it’s as important as anything else. If you have the attitude that you need to make time for fitness, chances are pretty good that you’ll find some. 2. Ok, fine. But working out is boring. It’s true that not everyone loves exercise, but there are things you can do to help pass the time and keep yourself motivated. Listening to eBooks or music while you go for a run is one way. But honestly, that doesn’t work for everybody. Those who can’t get going may benefit from a group workout session. Having others around to communicate and set

FIT941.COM

4. I can’t afford to work out. Money is tight for a lot of people right now. But remember, exercise is as important to you as eating and showering. If you cut back on the takeout food and the cable bill, you can definitely scrape up $30 for a gym membership. You don’t need a fancy trainer or some expensive equipment to stay fit; so let’s not pretend access to a few weights and a treadmill is going to break the bank. If you honestly can’t scrape together the cash, you still have no excuse not to get your daily fit fix. Running around the neighborhood or doing some pushups at home are effective and free ways to meet your daily quota. 5. It’s just genetics; I can’t stay fit! How’s your diet? Are you loading yourself up with carbohydrates and calories? If you’re pushing yourself hard and still not losing weight, you’re not eating right. The key to seeing results is dedication and patience. It may take some time to tweak your diet and exercise routine to get a good balance, but in the end you will see results. Everyone does. Work with a nutritionist or a trainer if you’re having trouble setting realistic goals, but let’s not pretend that you just can’t do it. You can lose weight and stay fit—it just may take some time. With the right attitude, and by not allowing yourself to become a victim of your own lame excuses, there’s little that can stand in the way of you and a healthy lifestyle.

PICKLEBALL: Sweet Game, Sour Name By Ellyn Santiago

ecessity is the mother of invention they say. So when you want to play a game, but find yourself without the proper equipment what do you do? Invent a new game, of course. According to the USA Pickelball Association, in 1965 in Washington state a family longing to play badminton but without a set of rackets improvised: using a Whiffle ball, which bounced nicely on asphalt, ping-pong paddles (or, as one story goes, paddles crafted from pilfered plywood found in a nearby shed) and a lowered net, Pickelball was born. The game, which was at once fun and family-friendly, was later further refined with a set of specific rules loosely based on badminton rules and a prototype racket designed by an aerospace industrial engineer. In the 1970's, Tennis magazine dubbed Pickleball “America’s newest racquet sport.’ And today, according to the Sports and Fitness Industry Association, nearly three million of us are Pickleballing! Who knew?

N

So why is it called Pickleball? According to several online sources, the wife of Washington Congressman Joel Pritchard

who with a friend invented the game, said after seeing the men MacGyver their brand new game, it reminded her of the term ‘pickle boat;’ the last crew boat made up of the “leftover” oarsmen from other boats. The game’s appeal is based largely on its resemblance to badminton and ping-pong, and is ideally suited for everyone, basically, of all fitness levels and ability. And it combines elements of ping-pong, badminton and tennis and can be played indoors or out on a badminton-sized court using a paddle and plastic ball. It’s a friendly game played by the very young and the very old alike but many players enjoy the competitive nature of the game as well as competitive Pickleball tournaments are common. Indeed, according to the USAPA, Pickleball is “exploding in popularity” in part because it can be found in YMCA’s, community centers, private racquet clubs and not surprisingly in retirement communities.

Pickleball Play! A racquet sport that can be played by two, three or four people, using lightweight paddles to send a similarly lightweight perforated plastic ball over a net, Pickleball is played on a court similar to badminton doubles court, with a net height of 36 inches, the court is striped much like a tennis court. In fact, while there are courts that are Pickleball-specific, tennis or badminton courts can be modified. The Pickleball paddle is smaller than a tennis racquet but bigger than a ping-pong paddle and the ball, much like a Whiffle ball, has holes and is very lightweight; it moves at about one-third the speed of a tennis ball. Players can only score when serving. The rules, while

PICKLEBALL TERMS Dink: Soft shot with open paddle so it just clears the net Fault: Break the rules, the rally ends Kitchen: Non-volley and no-player zone Lob : Hitting the ball really high to foil an opponent who’s advanced to the net Poach: In doubles, crossing over to make a play Rally: Hitting the ball back and forth Serve: Underhand lob Sideline: AKA out-of-bounds

similar to tennis, badminton and pin-pong, are specific but easy to learn. A great place to learn is by watching a video tutorial or by visiting the usapa.org website. Pickleball in the 941! There are a number of locations to play Pickleball in Sarasota and Manatee counties including numerous public and private recreation clubs, parks and community centers including GT Bray County Park in Bradenton, Anna Maria Community Center, Herb Dolan Park in Bradenton Beach, Longwood Park in Sarasota, Foxworthy and Pinebrook parks in Venice and myriad other locations. The USAPA provides a full list of locations on its website. And, according to the Sarasota County Parks, Recreation and Natural Resources website, the Englewood Suncoast Pickleball Classic II is slated for Dec. 4 through 6. The double-elimination tourney is for ages 29 and up and features men’s, women’s and mixed doubles play on lighted, outdoor courts. xercise. Let’s face it, exercise sounds like a chore for adults and for kids. Same. Try changing the word; make it simple and say to your kids you’d like to see play for a couple of hours every day, be it with friends outside, or jogging with your dog, maybe throwing a Frisbee or even as simple as the backyard swing set or even better for some kids, a big old pile of toys like trucks! They’re moving!

Children of all ages are spending more time than ever glued to a screen: be it a TV, smartphone, tablet, gaming console, or computer. According to market research firm Childwise, children aged five to 16 spend an average of six and a half hours a day in front of a screen. Teenaged boys spend the longest, with an average of eight hours. Teenage girls now spend an average of seven-and-a-half- hours starring a screen, compared with three to four hours glued to TV in 1995. 54 HOLIDAY 2015

HOLIDAY 2015 55

SURVIVE THE Season

by Jaqlyn Tinaro

The holidays are at once a spirited and for many, stressful, time of the year. There’s plenty of excitement and lots to look forward to: family and friends flying in; gift giving and receiving and some holiday ‘cheer.’ And with those tempting spirits, think Christmas punch, festive champagne cocktails and warming hard ciders, it’s possible to overdo and your body may pay the price.

T

Alcohol, while enjoyable and often a stress reliever, causes more stress on the body than many are aware, or willing to admit. The infamous hangover isn’t the only symptom that is a common result of excessive or binge drinking. Along with extremely high sugar and acidity levels, which feeds bad bacteria, yeast and micro-organisms, alcohol, causes severe dehydration— the definition of a hangover. In addition, alcohol contains chemicals that cancel out and kill off water soluble nutrients. Water soluble nutrients are B vitamins, amino acids, minerals and certain antioxidants like vitamin C, they are used for all bodily functions, including (but not limited to) brain function and memory retention, digestive function, food enzyme production, energy levels, muscle repair and growth, bone strength, and more. The key to anti-aging and disease prevention is to add the same, if not more, nutrients into the body as are lost. Stress alone can cause huge drops in energy levels due to how much nutrient utilization is expelled during high-stress situations. The combination of alcohol and stress deplete the body of much needed nutrients. Therefore, supplementing 56 HOLIDAY 2015

with bio-available Co-enzyme or Phosphorylated B Vitamins, organic liquid minerals, whole food based amino acids from super foods like Moringa Oleifera can help balance out the body in times of need.

A body must be adequately hydrated especially on those holiday party nights where there’s likely to be quite a few cocktails. Drinking a minimum of 30 to 32 fluid ounces of water with fresh-squeezed lemon or minerals before bed can help to fight off that hangover. The morning after is the opportune time to hydrate once again with pure, organic coconut water (not from concentrate) or water with trace minerals (one drop of minerals for every two fluid ounces, minimum). Processed or refined sugars are another big concern when it comes to the holidays. What can be temporarily satisfying now can quickly turn into long term regret later. For a new twist on things, look into alternative baking techniques with natural sugar substitutes. For example, Monk fruit extract, non GMO Xylitol and liquid Stevia extract (or TRUVIA ®) are all low-glycemic, zero-calories and chemical-free. Not all taste buds are the same, and for some these alternatives can seemingly alter the tastes of traditional holiday treats. For those unwilling to let go of traditionally sweetened treats, pure non-irradiated cinnamon extract is an excellent alternative to explore this holiday season. For years it has been known to assist with stabilizing blood sugar and glycemic levels, while providing a natural sweetness of its own. The taste of

cinnamon isn’t for everyone, so there’s always the option of taking it in supplement form.

having enough bowel movements a day, fatigue and long term digestive discomfort.

For many, the greatest challenge during the holidays is quite simply this: overindulgence. It’s so easy to have that second helping of mashed potatoes or third (or fourth) cookie. And everyone’s done it: straight to the couch to sleep it off. Here’s the thing; food is fuel, and fuel provides energy. If it’s straight to the couch after a big holiday dinner then it’s likely the meal was consumed too quickly (with too much on the plate) and/ or whatever was eaten was not compatible with the body, blood and metabolic type. Or, the various food combinations on that plate overwhelmed the digestive system and have slowed down the absorption and energy production process.

Looking at the evolution of the human body, humans primarily survived off grazing and consuming raw foods, typically one type of food at a time. Today, the human body has to deal with an abundance of different food groups that are cooked, therefore the naturally-occurring enzymes once available are now dead, causing your body to take on the task of breaking it down, which can cause digestion problems including symptoms of indigestion such as constipation, diarrhea, and acid reflux, for example.

Food combining has become an increasingly successful technique to aid in a smooth digestion process. It decreases chances of bloating, gas, acid reflux, indigestion and helps the body absorb foods properly; having an increase in energy levels and assisting in battling chronic fatigue. The concept is simple: our bodies were not made to be able to handle different types of food groups and molecules all at once. Depending on the food group, the body will produce a specific type of enzyme to break down the food molecule into its simplest form, which in turn is how your body produces ATP (energy). Some of these enzymes were not meant to interact with each other. For example, Proteas (the enzyme that breaks down proteins) deactivates Amylase (the enzyme that breaks down starches and carbs) therefore neither food molecule properly breaks down. This can cause a series of symptoms including feeling full too fast, not

With food combining there are specific rules to follow when creating a plate or cooking meals. The Food Combining Chart demonstrates how food combining works. For individuals who are unable to fully follow the ground rules of proper food combining, the next best thing is to add a digestive enzyme supplement with every meal and a Lacto/Bifido multi-stranded high count probiotic before bed time. These supplements assist the body with fully breaking down foods and help the body eliminate on a regular basis. There’s no need to deprive yourself during the holidays as long as you understand how the body reacts and its limits. So eat, drink and be merry, wisely and in moderation.
