itness is a funny thing. There are so many different types of fitness classes, so many different types of people of varying shapes and sizes that would be considered fit. I am not a tall man, always on the short and stocky side. A majority of my life I was what most would deem to be physically fit, but I could not stand my shape. Though I admired the tall, super lean surfer’s body, I realized it was never gonna happen for me. Over time, you just have to say, “I can only strive to be the best that I can be—not try to attain a physique that my genetic makeup will never give me….” Six weeks ago I went in for back surgery. Through grueling college wrestling and the many years teaching over 40 hours per week of boot-camps and SPIN, personal training, and various other creative classes that tested the limits of my body, I had developed a crushed (herniated) disc between my L4 and L5 vertebrae. Two weeks before surgery, I basically just stopped all physical activity (on doctor’s orders) so I didn’t injure myself more prior to going under the knife. Here’s the funny part about fitness—my body was so used to all the activity, that even though my diet was good, I gained about 20 lbs in eight weeks. This wasn’t fun, oh no! Let me just tell you how fortunate we all are to live where we live. My surgeon, Dr. Moulton of Sarasota Orthopedic Associates was an absolute life saver. Because of him, my back feels better than it has in 15 years—since even before I got into fitness as a career. But here’s why I feel so fortunate. Over the past year, I have had the pleasure to meet and now work with the very finest fitness, nutrition, medical, health and wellness people in the state. Each has, or will play a big role, in my getting back to peak form. I mentioned Sarasota Orthopedic, but I work out at Crunch Fitness when I’m on my own and also do post surgery rehab style recovery workouts with True U Fitness. I get IV supplements, which aid in recovery and weight loss, from Sarasota IV Lounge and from Age Vital Pharmacy; I eat healthy at places like Revelry Pub, Fast-N-Fresh, Ionie Raw Food Café, and Get Fit Fuel. My new workout clothes and running shoes are from Fit2Run and Fleet Feet. I got an incredible diet plan from my friend Daemian Mains from Def Fit. I shop for my health foods at Wholefoods and Richard’s Foodporium. When I am back to 100%, I’ll be doing Orange Theory again, Title Boxing, and getting massages from Massage Envy. I can’t wait to do my first ultra-violet sauna treatment at Angela’s Pure Salon and Spa, and get my first sports acupuncture from Dr. Deena at 941 Wellness. The greatness goes on and on. I can work with Charles Chestnut III or Derek Flaim or Stephen Kelley—three independent fitness gurus. I get super fresh organic produce delivered right to my door by Sharyn at White Picket Produce and I track down Lynn in her juice truck for fresh organic Sarafresh Juice. Tommy Klauber just added a brand new bunch of awesome healthy stuff to his Polo Grill menu for the summer, so I’m there! And when my nervous system allows me to settle down, I’ll be doing yoga with Larisa Byley and Pilates with Cinde Carrol—maybe even Kai dancing with Kelly Atkins, hmm...maybe. The experts we have at our finger tips in this community are truly remarkable. I will need each of them for very specific, specialized parts of my injury recovery, my weight loss, and my peace of mind. I so appreciate all of you (and those I forgot to mention!) who comprise the fitness, nutrition, health and wellness community of Sarasota and Manatee Counties! We are very lucky to have you, thank you all!

941 Real Estate Market Trending Up

M

ichael Saunders & Co., one of the region’s largest real estate brokers, sees the healthy comeback in the local real estate market continuing. Marci Rossell, former chief economist for CNBC, recently spoke at the Michael Saunders & Co annual meeting and noted how rising prices mean equity is surging back into our homes, restoring their value and empowering homeowners to sell and pursue new housing goals.

Crunch

Fitness Comes to Bradenton

C

runch Fitness is opening a new facility in Bradenton and will begin pre-selling memberships on July 1st. Crunch, widely considered the premier low cost gym option available today, is known for its great value and for making exercise fun. The Bradenton location, as with all Crunch facilities, will feature over $700,000 of industry best equipment and 25,000 to 30,000 square feet of space. Crunch offers everything you need to get in the best shape of your life, employing nationally lauded personal trainers and group fitness instructors who teach a multitude of cutting edge classes. Crunch is so appealing in large part because of its ‘No Gotcha approach.’ Members can choose from a $9.95, $19.95, or $39.95 membership, providing a more customized gym experience. The $9.95 option gives full access to all equipment, online nutrition, and a free personal training session. The $19.95 membership adds to the basic plan, allowing access to group fitness classes, guest privileges, other Essential locations, and free tanning. For $39.95, childcare is also provided. The best part: unlike other gyms with similar pricing, Crunch has no cancellation policy. It’s as easy as telling a Crunch employee at the front counter that you wish to cancel, and in a maximum of 10 days (usually it only takes one) you’re out. No extra charge, no 60 or 30 day wait. For more information on Crunch Fitness and to secure your membership to the Bradenton location, visit Crunch.com.

Janet Oberholtzer, Michael Saunders & Co's 2014 'Rookie of The Year' says, “When people have their net worth increase due to the higher value of their home, it gives them the confidence to go out and make those purchases that they were hesitant to make during the recession—likes, cars, gym memberships, vacation homes.” Rossell’s message resonated with what Oberholtzer is seeing every day in the real estate world. "Due to more stability in the economy, real estate prices continue their climb, particularly here in Southwest Florida,” says Oberholtzer. “And I think when people feel the stability of their homes' value, it spills over to a much greater peace of mind in every aspect of their life—this is healthy!" Michael Saunders & Co. is located at 100 S Washington Blvd in Sarasota. Janet Oberholtzer can be reached at 941-953-7900.

Definition Fit Putting the ‘HIRT’ On!

D

aemian Mains, co-owner of Definition Fit in downtown SRQ recently placed 3rd in the World Beauty Fitness and Fashion (Diva Fitness) show, a contest described as Victoria’s Secret with muscles! A very impressive accomplishment considering Mains had a torn shoulder muscle and a herniated disc in her neck. How did she shed all the fat and build serious muscle in just 15 weeks? Two factors: An incredibly disciplined diet program and “HIRT” or High Intensity Resistance Training. Mains teaches HIRT every Tuesday morning at 9:30 at Definition Fit. It’s a new way to work out for incredible results; to build a lean, strong (for women, a very feminine shape) body. HIRT combines weights and kettle bells, bands and body weight exercises in timed intervals with super quick cardio moves. It’s metabolic training at its best. Mains is preparing now for the next WBFF Diva Fitness show in Tampa, on July 25th. If you want to learn from a prize winning ‘Diva Fitness’ Pro, check out Daemian at Definition Fit—also offering the brand new Beginners fitness classes Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 11:30 am. Call 941 962-3271 to set up an appointment. Definition Fit is located at 1477 5th Street in downtown Sarasota.

Athlete Profile Sarasota Sports Medicine Opens a Second Location

De’von Heaven Sky's the Limit For This Class Athlete De’von Heaven is his name. This 6’3” young man will be entering the 9th grade at Manatee High School in August. When you speak to the teachers and coaches from Team Success Charter School in Bradenton, they could go on endlessly about De’Von’s ability, his potential, and his humble nature. He is an award winning student and a very gifted athlete, and even though his school did not have organized team sports, he always stole the show and was the ‘take charge’ guy on the field or court every time he played—anything. The list is long, but to name a few of his accolades, he was a member of the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), first place winner of the Charlayne HunterGault Award (a very prestigious Sarasota writing competition), 2015 recipient of the Team Success Top Science Excellence Award, leader of the school’s safety patrol, maintained at least a 3.5 GPA in each of his middle school years, and considered by all to be the absolute best athletic prospect in the school’s history. According to Armando Biota, Devon’s Civics and U.S. History teacher, “He is without question the top student I have taught of all time—and on the football and soccer fields and basketball court, he takes charge...a true leader.” His athletic mentor, PE teacher Steve Cannon from Team Succss says, “Above all, this kid is just awesome and a first class athlete with unlimited potential; socially, fundamentally, Devon is an amazing young guy.” When asked what his favorite sport is, he hesitated briefly, but admits that soccer is probably at the top of his list, with EVERY other sport a very close tie for second. Manatee High School, known for its state championship sports teams, is most definitely anxious to have this tall, smart, hard working freshman wearing the Red and Blue Hurricanes jersey this coming year. We wish De’von nothing but greatness, in the classroom and on the field!

Sarasota IV Lounge Going Strong

T

he concept may have gathered a few celebrity fairweather friends in recent months, but for many, IV Therapy offers a positive, succinct alternative to simply popping a few vitamins bought from an anonymous strip mall store and hoping for the best.

China

According to Austin DaSilva, general manager of Sarasota IV Lounge, people are always going to have a certain amount of skepticism. “I’m happy to talk about those concerns,” DaSilva said. “As soon as our customers come in to the IV Lounge and try one of the Healing Cocktails or Wellness Cocktails, their whole point of view will change. I haven’t had anyone come into the Lounge and not walk out feeling like a different person.” Created from a solution of vitamins and minerals called the Myers' Cocktail, IV Therapy was invented over 30 years ago by Baltimore physician John Myers and consist of magnesium, calcium, various B vitamins and vitamin C. The process, which can last from 30-90 minutes, is easy and painless. Following an initial consultation with the IV Lounge’s staff, the Lounge’s certified nurse hooks you up to a drip and then it’s simply a question of relaxing while the fluids flow. “Of course we always recommend that you speak with your primary physician before you come into the Lounge,” added DaSilva. The cocktails are created in the ‘Infusion Room’ and can be ready in under an hour. A typical procedure lasts for 30 minutes in a medically supervised but relaxing, spa-like lounge setting. The costs vary between the cocktails. “We always have fun promotions going on.” says DaSilva. “We try and make it easy for first time clients to try the benefits of IV therapy and it helps keep them coming back.” To learn more about Sarasota IV Lounge, visit SarasotaIVLounge.com.

Success Story Ending the Hiatus

K

elsey Grabiak is a local girl who loves sports and fitness. A recent FIU graduate and college athlete, she had been playing softball and other organized sports ever since she was a little girl. She graduated in 2012, and it was the first time since she could remember when she didn’t have to be on the field working out and training, so she took it easy. During this hiatus from the daily hours practicing her sport, her body reacted exactly like anybody’s would—by adding weight! Kelsey quickly gained about 30 pounds after her sports training routine ended. She tried all the diets and the fad workouts and only saw her weight and shape yo-yo all over the place. Everything changed when Kelsey, who coaches the Lakewood Ranch High School Softball team, observed a trainer teaching an intense boot-camp style workout. She decided to see what it was all about. The trainer, Charles Chestnut III, created CPT Nation (Chestnut Performance Training), an outdoor speed and agility, strength and endurance workout program designed for professional and college athletes to use during the off-season. Kelsey dove right in and got hooked. In just six months, Kelsey, with Charles’ help, lost over 40 lbs, more than what she originally gained. This is all due to CPT Nation and her focus on proper diet. She tries to get in three or four of the workouts per week and has also completely changed her eating as well, describing it as a lifestyle and not a diet. She drinks water throughout her day, eats constantly—six or seven times a day—BUT she eats only foods that help her perform at her best. These include lean protein, veggies, fruit, high fiber carbs, good fats like olive oil and real peanut butter. Additionally, she never skips breakfast, which keeps her body metabolizing and burning calories all day. Giving up alcohol also contributed to her transformation. Chestnut says, “She is dedicated, making her health and her fitness a big priority in her life. She always gives 100 percent and encourages the others in the group to do the same...a real leader...a pleasure to train.” Her hard work and dedication to her workouts and her diet has certainly paid off. Great job, KELSEY! 14 FIT941.com

on the cover True U Fitness Opens in Downtown Sarasota

T

rue U Fitness is a revolutionary weight-training program proving that sometimes a little really does go a long way. Certified Personal Trainers, Keith Jobin and Joe Muscatell, are exponents of “Super Slow High Intensity Strength Training”—a game changing, ultra slow, weight training regimen that drastically boosts strength and fitness with far less time and effort than traditional programs. True U Fitness is based on the theory that using slow force to push a muscle past the point of fatigue stimulates muscle growth, increases muscle strength and elasticity, and improves muscle tone.

Model: Attorney P. Christopher Jaensch has over 18 years experience in the field of immigration and nationality law and focuses his practice on four primary categories — investors and entrepreneurs; business executives, managers and professionals; amateur and professional athletes and coaches and performing artists; immigrants with extraordinary ability. Jaensch resides in Sarasota and attributes his lean physique to a strict allergy-free diet. Photographer: John Joseph Revisky has over 30 years experience in shooting fashion, sportswear and physique models. Revisky’s resume includes Nike and Prada. Make up Artist: Alyssa Woods Assistant: David Boyette Clothing: The Compound Boardshop, Sarasota Location/Props: Crunch Gym – Bee Ridge

“Don’t think gym,” stresses Muscatell. “We’re more like an anti-gym.” He explains that he and Jobin work one-on-one with clients in an intimate, tranquil setting without music, mirrors or distraction. "All that's needed is two 20-minute workouts per week,” he says. True U Fitness helps you achieve more with less time and effort using scientific principles. The starting point is always the client, ranging in ability from average to athletic. First, a certified personal trainer adjusts the gear to the client’s specifications, then coaches them through a workout cycle on six to eight state-of-the-art Nautilus machines. True U Fitness provides a private environment with no music, mirrors, or personal judgments. There’s nothing to distract you from your workout. It’s just you, your trainer and the machines. For more information, visit TrueUFitness.com or call 941-373-6300. The facility is located at 1727 Second Street, Suite 1, Sarasota.

The Polo Fit menu was created. Clean eating is generally defined as consuming food as close as possible to its natural state, free from added sugars, fats, and unnatural additives. Polo Fit embraces this principle, along with minimizing or eliminating use of allergens like dairy, peanuts, soy, gluten, and corn. When it comes to clean eating, variety is key. “The healthy diet can be boring,” Klauber says. “Like in the gym, your body needs variety, your muscles need to be doing different things and experiencing new workouts. The same goes for your taste buds and stomach. You need different flavors and textures to stay interested.”

thought, practice and skill. It is in no way running without instruction.

WHAT DEFINES US AS RUNNERS Do sprinters, middle-distance runners and marathoners require fundamentally different styles of running? Other than how fast they’re running, there is not a fundamental difference in their running styles.

by Rachael Colacino

The Pose Method of Running ®

FOR FASTER, MORE EFFICIENT, INJURY-FREE RUNNING hink back to when you were a child, barely school age, in gym class. You wanted to run faster and a well-meaning adult told you to lengthen your stride. Take bigger steps. Or think about a high school athlete you know, searching endlessly through different brands and models of sneakers, with nothing ever feeling quite right. Or the older runner, plagued by chronic knee pain, who has tried orthotics, cortisone injections, with pain always ready to erupt.

T

Universally speaking, we as humans are always looking to improve. Runners in particular — well we are a stubborn bunch. We want to improve in every way — run faster, run further, and all without pesky injuries that will sideline us and keep us from meeting our goals. That pursuit of greatness lies in all of us. Through all these chased goals, though, rarely do we talk about the actual technique of running. How to run. How to run faster, how to run longer, how to run without injury. And that’s where the Pose Method® of running can help all of us. 20 FIT941.com

Born to Run by Christopher McDougall

Unbreakable Runner by Brian MacKenzie But first, the concept of natural running. The concept of natural running is one that has been discussed widely as of late, especially in running circles. To be clear, there are two different ways to look at this concept of natural running. The first approach would be running without instruction. The second approach, the concept that Pose running considers, is the concept of natural running as utilizing the laws of nature. That second approach, and running how nature intended is the foundation of Pose. While it is natural running, Pose still requires

Or how about this — we often hear about runners defining themselves by the way their foot hits the ground. But why? Heel striker, midfoot striker, pronator — why do these define you as a runner? Aside from foot strike, are our mechanics really that different? My point is that runners — no matter what distance or speed — runners have more in common with each other than not. And that’s what the Pose Method ® is about — not about what runners do differently, but about what everyone who runs does the same. Pose takes those similarities, those points of contact and movement, and tells us how to run as efficiently and with as few injuries as possible.

POSE RUNNING, DEFINED At its core, the Pose Method® of running is efficient, injury-free movement taught through key positions. It was created to prevent injuries and dramatically improve athletic performance. Pose teaches athletes how to run not only in the safest way for avoiding injuries, but also in the most efficient way to run faster and longer. Founded in the Soviet Union in 1977 by Olympic coach Dr. Nicholas Romanov, the Pose Method® was created to standardize and create a commonly accepted model of running during the jogging boom, when so many people started running for exercise and stress release. The framework of Pose Running is not about what runners do differently, but

instead what all runners do the same. The name of the technique comes from the word “pose” or “body position,” because the running Pose is maintained for the entire run. Pose returns us to how we as humans have developed as runners and shows us how to run naturally. Again, natural running is not running without instruction. Instead, natural running is an approach to running that utilizes the laws of nature to move our bodies efficiently and without doing additional harm.

HOW POSE WORKS What is the one force that allows you to go from standing still to moving forward? Gravity. And this is exactly what Pose uses to move runners forward. Pose uses the downward force of gravity, through rotational torque and changing your center of mass to initiate a fall — to move forward. Pose can be divided into three elements: the Pose or position of your body, the Fall forward, and the Pull to recover the swing foot back into the running Pose, to cycle through again and again.

EXPAND. STRENGTHEN. REJUVENATE. MECHANICS OF RUNNINGPOSE While using the Pose Technique, everything starts with the position of your body. The Pose is the support phase — this is what supports your body while you’re running. The position that we aim to maintain is a position that all runners go through at varying degrees whether they’re practicing Pose knowingly or not. Pose is most effective when you move in and out of the position as efficiently as possible. No matter how your foot strikes the ground, the running Pose is necessary to initiate falling forward. To get into the position, start with your feet. Shift your body weight to the forefoot, slightly bend your knees). Your head should be neutral as you’re running; you should not be looking down or up. Keep your gaze trained to about seven feet or so in front of you. Your shoulders should be relaxed and in line with your hips and ankles. Arms should be at 90 degree angles; hands should also be relaxed. Your core should be tight — that tight midline is what will keep your entire body organized

as you’re falling. We are avoiding bending at the waist — that bend will force you to overstride to counterbalance the excessive back strain. From the Pose position, take a large step forward onto your heel. This is the longest stride you can make and requires a locked knee, landing on your heel. This also has the longest support time and causes overloads to bones and joints as up to three times your body weight lands on your heel. This heel striking position is what we are trying to correct through the Pose Method®. Shift your weight back and forth and feel how your outstretched leg is acting as a brake, stopping your forward motion. Now pull your leg back until your heel comes off the ground. Your foot should be below your hips at this point. This is the strike we are aiming for in Pose. Notice how nimble your joints feel, with no undue leverage. Notice too that your body wants to continue forward — there is no braking effect as with the heel strike. This is also the shortest support time for your body weight, and in fact, this landing pattern is scientifically proven to reduce load on the knee by 50 percent as compared to heel striking.

FALL Pose is a controlled fall, holding your body in the running Pose while you use gravity to move forward. The fall forward is your gas pedal. The further forward you fall, the faster you’ll run. The fall — the drive forward phase of Pose — starts from your hips, being sure to keep your shoulders over your hips and your ankles below. To say it another way, even though you’re falling, you do not lose the Pose position. To see how the Fall works, start from your Pose position and start to hop in place. Next, start to lean slightly from the hips and notice how you move forward. What generated that forward movement was not your hopping — it was your forward fall. That’s what we use to move us forward in Pose. 22 FIT941.com

Every runner falls forward to varying degrees in their run, whether they’re using Pose or not. Want to run faster? Fall forward with a higher angle. The fall angle changes with pace: a slower pace requires as little as 1 degree; sprinters can use up to 22.5 degrees when falling forward. And again, while we are falling forward, it’s important that we do not lose the Pose position. Maintaining the position is what keeps us falling forward in an organized and efficient way.

PULL The Pull phase of Pose is the recovery, and how runners move in the most efficient way through the Pose position. The bottom line here is that in Pose, runners are never pushing off the ground. We are always pulling up to recover the initial position. Pushing off causes excessive

strain on your hamstrings with no net gain forward; driving the knee forward is a wasteful movement that requires excessive hip flexor work. When your falling angle and therefore, pace increase – your higher cadence will also increase the height and speed of the pulling action.

concentration in the beginning especially. It’s hard work mentally, especially for runners who are used to using runs to zone out and process mental stressors. In the beginning it does take focus; after practice Pose becomes less conscious and becomes how you run.

Steps per minute is faster with Pose, but the Pull only needs to be high enough to pull the foot off the ground. Typical heel-striking runners will take around 160 steps per minute; Pose runners start at 180 steps per minute.

DON'T IGNORE

THE CORE

by Kyle O'Connor

The techniques used are widely regarded as a great way to transform your body in record-breaking time. Also, it’s one of the safest forms of high intensity exercise as it is very low impact.

ore exercises. For many people, just thinking about doing them can cause a shudder. Everyone wants a toned, sexy midsection, but the training required to obtain one is just so tedious. Not to mention difficult. Your abs burn, legs shake, and within seconds you’re out of breath. Most people would rather do anything else, so it’s no surprise that core work is often pushed aside in favor of other exercises that require less mental fortitude.

C

Ignoring the core is a mistake, however. The core is comprised of your abdominal muscles, back muscles (especially those deep within the back and around the spine), and muscles attaching to the spine. Because the torso powers all of our movements, it is important to have a strong foundation (core). This will allow for a full range of motion and also help prevent injuries. So how can you incorporate putting a larger emphasis on developing core strength in your routine in a way that is both fresh and fun? Barre training has gotten very popular in the last decade and

26 FIT941.com

projects to become even more so. As the main piece of equipment in Barre classes is the ballet bar and many of the movements stem from classic ballet positions, it’s not surprising that it was created by a ballet dancer. Lotte Berk, a German dancer who lived in London, combined her ballet conditioning routine with rehabilitative therapy, opening her first studio in 1959 in her basement. A modern version of Barre training is Pure Barre, founded by fitness guru Carrie Rezabek Dorr in 2001. With no initial clients, staff, signage, or even a bathroom, Carrie managed to build Pure Barre into the successful company it is today. Pure Barre became a franchise in 2009 and has exploded in popularity since then. At first glance, the Pure Barre method may not seem like a tough workout, but it is. The techniques used are widely regarded as a great way to transform your body in record-breaking time. Also, it’s one of the safest forms of high intensity exercise, as it is very low impact. This means you won’t put excessive stress on your joints. One thing to keep in mind is that dancing experience is not required. You also don’t have to have the

prototypical dancer’s body or look like a ballerina. As long as you are able to hold onto the ballet barre, you can do it. This opens Pure Barre up to women and men of all shapes, sizes, and ages. Classes are 55 minutes long. With motivating, fun music playing, your instructor will set up the exercises and then move around the room to assisting and correcting form. As you work through a dynamic warm up, arm sculpting, thigh toning,

seat lifting, abdominal flattening, and cool down, one word you’re going to hear a lot is ‘tuck,’ so get ready! For the majority of movements, the focus will be on tucking your pelvis. Most people don’t have ideal posture, especially when it comes to the spine. This is usually due to lack of flexibility and strength throughout the body, but especially the core. The purpose of tucking is to get the body into one line, which provides a proper foundation for all movements. Constantly working to tuck the tailbone under your belly button while keeping your abs tight and shoulders back improves flexibility and strength and teaches your body what it feels like to have good posture. At Sarasota Pure Barre, one of the people who will be reminding you to tuck is Chaz Glunk, a Sarasota native and Pure Barre instructor since 2012. Chaz, a professional modern and ballet dancer for most of his life, is drawn to Pure Barre in large part because it allows him to continue with the physical aspects of dance while also experiencing a constant challenge. What he loves about Pure Barre is how it reaches such a wide range of people. “We don’t have any levels of class,” he says. “Everybody is always in the same room. There could be somebody in their seventies next to somebody in their 30’s, and as a

teacher we make sure they’re working to their best capacity, the safest and strongest that they can work.” Another intense, low impact exercise program guaranteed to give you great results is Pilates, an innovative system of mind-body exercises based on the principles of Joseph Pilates. The Pilates method includes more than 500 controlled, precise movements designed to stretch and strengthen muscles without adding bulk. The focus is on core musculature to enhance and support spinal alignment and joint mobility. You’ll see benefits such as increased strength, flexibility, stamina, a clearer mind, and many more. Joanne Hayashi is a Pilates and Gyrotonic Instructor, as well as owner of The Pilates Body in Sarasota. Her studio is the only one in the area that is fully equipped, holding private classes, group classes, and teacher training. Gyrotonic Expansion is a holistic approach to movement, allowing users to stretch and strengthen muscle tissue while simultaneously stimulating and strengthening connective tissues in and around the joints of the body. Several high-profile athletes use this type of training, including Shaquille O’Neal and Andy Murray. Says Joanne, “Consistent practice of Pilates and Gyrotonic Exercises will heighten our awareness and ability to organize and work our body in singularity. They are good supplemental exercises to our other activities to help us do what we like to do longer, things like running, cycling, golf, tennis, dance, or any sports activities. Pilates and Gyrotonic exercises are also utilized to help us heal from our injuries.”

Barre3 is a program that draws from both the Barre method and Pilates, as well as yoga. Founded by Sadie Lincoln, Chris Lincoln, and Mark Mastrov in 2008, Barre3 is different than other Barre methods, their motto being ‘where ballet barre meets yoga and pilates.’ The program is not as closely tied to the Lotte Berk Method (although inspired by it) as many Barre workouts are, offering more variety. Barre3 also embraces change, classes evolving over time, reflecting a love of learning and balancing the body. Barre3 progresses the dancer’s workout by combining the elegance of the ballet barre with the wisdom of yoga and the strength of Pilates. Classes are infused with an upbeat soundtrack and follow an energetic pace as students move through a sequence of postures that shape and lift the entire body. The benefits from practicing Barre3 are many, similar to what is gained from Pure Barre and Pilates. Some clients have actually measured taller after taking Barre3 classes, proving the lengthening effects on the muscles. Those who consistently do Barre3 and follow a healthy lifestyle also lose inches around their waists, hips, thighs, and upper arms. No matter which program you choose, be prepared to work! Pure Barre is a national franchise with many locations, including Crossroads Shopping Center, 3800 S Tamiami Trail in Sarasota. Go to purebarre.com for more information. Manatee County’s Oldest Running Tradition by Rae Ann Darling Reed, USATF Level II & RRCA Certified Running Coach at RunnerGirl.com he Labor Day Canes Cross Country Classic 5K began in 1993 as a fundraiser for the Manatee High School cross country team. According to longtime coach and race director Tom Orehowsky, “the first race director was Ed Lopacki who convinced me to do it with help from our team parents, some of whom were members of the Bradenton Runners Club, in order to raise money for team equipment and travel.” The idea was to invite the general public to race on the high school cross country course at G.T. Bray Park and allow them the opportunity to compete against local high school runners to see how they measured up. This was something that had never been

T

done before. With the support of the cross country team parents, local businesses, and the BRC, Tom Orehowsky began his reign as race director of what has become a Labor Day tradition Over the years, the 5K course changed just slightly to accommodate changes in the terrain at G.T. Bray Park with only one major change in 2009, which simply reversed a loop but made the course a lot less confusing and congested. The 1 mile fun run/walk became a 1K a few years ago in hopes of attracting younger participants. The new 1K course is all on trails within

the park, so it is safe for all ages. In 2012, the youngest finisher of the 1K was just three years old. The goal is to get more of the youth in the community interested in running and walking as a way to fight childhood obesity. “The Canes Classic is unique in that it is a multi-surface, flat and fast course, with excellent spectator viewing under our abundant oak tree shade,” emphasizes Orehowsky. “Few courses have that.” Coach Rae Ann Darling Reed joined the coaching staff in 2003, eventually taking over as race director when Orehowsky retired and also contributing to the formation of the race website CanesClassic.com. Race results dating back to 2002 are accessible online in addition to the course records and free race photos. Over the years there have been many generous sponsors of the Canes Classic, as it is a fundraiser event not just for the Manatee High School cross country team, but also a charity that the team chooses. The two most recent charities that benefitted from the team’s generosity are Save the Manatee Club and Monson Tornado Relief. Of special note on the sponsor side is Shepherd’s Tire Pros who has sponsored the Canes Classic every single year. They are a locally owned business dedicated to supporting this hometown tradition for the past 22 years.

Coach and race director Tom Orehowsky retired from teaching and coaching about a decade ago, yet he is still heavily involved in all things running in Manatee County. He volunteers so much of his time, especially with the Canes Classic. You will see him every Labor Day helping set up the course, singing the national anthem, starting the race, and so much more. Orehowsky is passionate about the tradition he started, noting that “We have entire families running together, as well as parent-child or husband-wife duos. Some of those who ran our first Canes Classic in 1993 are still in it in 2015. It has become a tradition for many area runners.” This year marks the 23rd Annual Canes Cross Country Classic 5K & 1K on Monday, September 7, 2015. It has grown into so much more than the team fundraiser it began as way back in 1993. No longer is it just a race, but also a milestone in the running history of Bradenton and Manatee County. Several running clubs include the Canes Classic in their annual racing series. It is known as the official kick-off event for the fall racing season in southwest Florida since there aren’t very many races during the hot and humid summer months. The Canes Cross Country Classic is the oldest, continuously running race in Manatee County. Now that’s a tradition you don’t want to miss!

Fit941 PROFILE:

ou’ve probably heard of the group exercise program Orange Theory by now. Having exploded in popularity over the last couple years, it’s currently the fastest growing franchise in the United States. The New York Times even calls it “the best one hour workout in the country.” So if you haven’t given Orange Theory a try, what are you waiting for?

T

According to Mark Flannagan, owner of Orange Theory on 6509 South 30 FIT941.com

by Kyle O'Connor

Tamiami Trail in Sarasota, the franchise’s success stems from the program being “designed for results.” The approach to this is science based and implemented through the use of technology. A growing number of studies show that a correlation between calories burned post workout and the workout’s intensity does indeed exist. This ‘Afterburn Effect’ is what Orange Theory is built around, referred to in the scientific community as Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consump-

tion or EPOC. Essentially, it is the oxygen debt built up during a burst of anaerobic exercise, which turns your body into a calorie burning machine once you’re finished. The higher the oxygen debt, the more powerful the Afterburn Effect. So what does EPOC have to do with Orange Theory? Everything. The reason why so many people are getting into the best shape of their lives through Orange Theory is because it’s designed to maximize EPOC. Research has shown that work-

outs causing participants to maintain a heart rate higher than 84 percent of maximum for a period of 12-20 minutes will provide the highest Afterburn Effect for the longest amount of time. This allows you to burn an additional 200 to 400 calories in the 36 hours following the workout. This is where the technology aspect comes in. Orange Theory is the only exercise program that monitors heart rate throughout the entire workout. Without knowing what your heart rate is, you have no idea if you’ve reached the ‘Orange Zone,’ that critical rate higher than 84 percent of your maximum. Not only does this maximize the effectiveness of each workout, it adds an element of safety—you know when to push harder and when to take it down a notch. Orange Theory even emails you your workout results after every session, allowing you to track your progress. What Mark loves most about Orange Theory is how the program works just as well for those looking to lose 150 lbs as it does finely tuned athletes, and everyone in between. In fact, the reason why he decided to buy his first location is because Orange Theory worked so well for him personally. He now has a second location, in downtown Sarasota, under construction, and a third planned off of SR 70 in Lakewood Ranch. The downtown facility will open in October and the SR 70 facility will open later this year. Pre-registration has begun for the downtown facility, and Mark is offering a free two week ‘sneak peak’ of classes to the people who reserve a discounted membership prior to the opening. This is a great opportunity to receive two free weeks in addition to discounted prices. Make your reservations today by going to orangetheoryfitness.com or call 941-444-2440! Try Orange Theory, and see how it can help you get into the best shape of your life.

OMEGA FATTY ACIDS

by Jaqlyn Tinaro

t this point most people are aware of the fact that Omega 3 Fatty Acids are “Good for you.” What most people don’t know is how not all Omega 3 Fatty Acids are created equal, or even processed inside the body the same way.

A

For those of you who aren’t aware how beneficial they truly are for the body, let’s start with the fact that they are a complete essential nutrient. This means that it is something your body cannot produce, so therefore you must obtain it through your diet. It is also known that given the abundance of Omega 6 in the common diet, it is important for balance to make sure that at least 75% of the fats in your diet come from Omega 3’s. There are three different types of Omega 3 Fatty Acids: EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid), DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) and ALA (Alpha-linolenic acid). Each one has specific benefits for your body, as well as overall common benefits. EPA reduces the inflammatory responses of Arachadonic Acid (AA) derived from 32 FIT941.com

the Omega 6 Fatty Acids commonly found in red meats (especially non-organic, grain fed beef). The more EPA in your diet the less AA your body will produce, thus reducing inflammation in the body as a response to your diet. This is something to keep in mind for those individuals struggling with inflammation of the joints and ligaments. Regardless of injury, Omega 3 Fatty Acids can help with reducing overall inflammation in the body. DHA aids in nerve function and creates an internal environment that is difficult for cancer cells to thrive in. It also reduces inflammation, but is best known for its ability to reduce inflammation in the brain and protect the cellular membrane from further damage. It also has the ability to reduce the size of LDL particles in the muscles’ cells that line the arteries, thus reducing the likelihood of Atherosclerotic Lesions. As a result of these functions, EPA and DHA assist in lowering blood pressure and heart rate, improve blood vessel function, and at higher doses lowers triglycerides. These fatty acids also have the ability to improve the health of your skin, eyes, hair, and nails.

ALA (Alpha-linolenic acid) is best known for support in inflammatory bowel disorders, increasing healthy HDL Cholesterol and decreasing unhealthy LDL Cholesterol. Unfortunately, Alpha-linolenic (ALA) acid needs to be converted in the body into the Omega3s EPA and DHA in order to be effective. For some bodies, this may not be an issue, but with so many bowel disorders and the percentage of individuals that have lower absorption rates, many people wind up being deficient in Omega 3 Fatty Acids regardless of whether they consume it in plant or animal form. EPA and DHA are commonly sourced from our Marine based foods, such as wild salmon, herring, sardines, etc. It is important to make sure that the fish you eat is wild and from cold waters, this decreases the chances of heavy metals such as mercury contaminating the food. Tuna, for example, is also rich in Omega 3 Fatty Acids, but travel from cold to warm waters increasing the level of heavy metals in the fatty tissue. For vegans, ALA can be sourced from foods such as Flax Seeds, Chia Seeds, Moringa leaf, Hemp Seeds, Kale, Spinach and Brussels sprouts. Given this information, I’m sure a few of you are wondering about Omega 3 Supplements. The main thing to keep in mind is not all supplements are created equal. The supplement industry is a multi-million dollar, unregulated industry, and everyone wants to sell you on their product. When you purchase a bottle of Omega 3’ supplements, make sure that the ingredients are very clearly listed. There should be no fillers or added oils, for example soybean oil, food coloring, or synthetic preservatives. The most common ingredients for Omega 3’s are usually the smaller types of fish such as Sardines and Anchovies. If it is a better quality company they will make sure that the Fish oil is tested and purified to ensure that there are no levels of chemicals, toxins, and metals left over in the oil. In order to do this, the product must be molecularly distilled. Molecular Dis-

tillation is the process in which they boil and pressurize the fish without the exposure of oxygen, then encapsulating them in soft gel form. If you are already taking a high quality fish oil or ALA and still don’t feel any positive effects, the first thing is to determine is if you are taking your supplement properly. Fat has a lower density level than the fluid in your stomach; therefore it rises at the top. The best way to guarantee absorption is to take the supplement BEFORE a meal instead of during or after. Another factor to consider is molecular compatibility with other foods; sugars inhibit absorption of fats and vise versa. It is best to take your supplement with other healthy fats instead of juice or other foods that contain a high amount of sugar.

You may also have a general problem absorbing and using fat. There are many contributing factors as to why this could be the case, such as: You care about what goes into your body and so do we! That is why we are strong believers in minimally processed, hormone free and junk free cuisine.

• Prescription proton pump inhibitors • Blocked or slow working gallbladder • A high level of toxins slowing down the citric acid cycle in the body inhibiting not only fat absorption but protein and carbohydrates • An off balance of the body’s internal circadian rhythm which is connected to the adrenal glands and over production of Cortisol • An over load of bacteria throwing off the balance of flora in the gut • Lymphatic toxicity The list can go on, but the most important thing is to find a practitioner who will access the underlying causes to your body’s distress, as opposed to simply masking the symptoms. Once the underlying cause is fixed, supplements like Omega 3 Fatty Acids will have the positive effect they were intended to.

CYCLO-CROSS:

THE COOLEST SPORT YOU’VE NEVER HEARD OF “The atmosphere for Cyclo-Cross is a bit more A laid back and inviting. There are different levels of re you looking for a new recreational activity to try, something different that will get your heart pounding and adrenaline skyrocketing? You may not have heard of Cyclo-Cross, but it’s beginning to gain serious popularity in the United States. As its name implies, Cyclo-Cross combines elements from several different sports; started by Europeans in the early 1900s as a winter diversion to road racing, it draws parallels to mountain bike racing and crosscountry cycling. The image most synonymous with Cyclo-Cross is that of the racer with his or her bicycle slung over the shoulder, charging up a muddy slope or lunging over an obstacle akin to a hurdle. While these stretches of non-riding are what make Cyclo-Cross unique, they don’t generally comprise a majority of a race. Participants still have to be great riders. Tracks are smaller than those used in road races, generally a mile or so. Most races don’t last as long, but because of the different terrain and obstacles throughout, they can be just as difficult, if not more so than traditional races. The Cyclo-Cross season is also during the winter, meaning weather is often an additional variable that needs to be accounted for. 36 FIT941.com

competition, including for beginners and kids.” The bicycles used are designed specifically to withstand the rigors of CycloCross racing. At first glance, they closely resemble those used for road racing, but they have two major differences. One is the frame geometry and the other is a wider clearance, which allows for slightly larger tires and for mud and other debris to accumulate without affecting performance.

So how can you get started? CycloCross training and races can be impromptu affairs, usually put together without much notice. The best way to get the inside scoop is to be an active member of your cycling community. Many cyclists participate and even compete in multiple disciplines, so if you join your local cycling club there is a very good chance you’ll meet people

who do Cyclo-Cross in addition to their other cycling pursuits. There are several great clubs in Sarasota and Manatee Counties. One is the SarasotaManatee Bicycle Club. Founded, in 1974, it promotes cycling for physical fitness, health, sport, recreation, and transportation. They have weekly rides, a bimonthly newsletter, liability insurance, events and fun parties, and much more. Another club is the Village Idiots Cycling Club, which encompasses Lakewood Ranch, Bradenton, and Sarasota. They have a USA Cycling Race Team, and many of their members take part in non-traditional road races including mountain biking and Cyclo-Cross. As far as equipment goes, Village Bikes is the premier sales and service shop in Lakewood Ranch, Bradenton, and Sarasota. From their website, “We are full service purveyors of fun, fitness, and high performance bicycles, cycling equipment, and cycling accessories. We enjoy selling the premier brands of bicycling equipment, parts, accessories, and we are experts at servicing bicycles from all manufacturers.” Village Bikes is consistently voted the area’s number one bike shop and is definitely the first place you should stop by if you’re interested in trying Cyclo-Cross. They also organize local rides throughout the area! For the competitors out there, you may already be wondering what kinds of races are available in the area. Dustin Davis, a member of the Village Idiots Cycling Club, suggests visiting the Facebook page and website for Wicked Awesome Racing, currently Florida’s top organization dedicated to Cyclo-Cross racing. Davis, who is a veteran cycler familiar with both traditional road racing and Cyclo-Cross, notes some differences between the two. “Cyclo-Cross is more spectator friendly,” he says. “The courses are shorter compared to those for road races, which can be 40 to 70 miles.” Cyclo-Cross courses are generally only a few miles in length or less, allowing for family and friends to see a particular competitor many times during a race without having to change locations. Davis also says, “The atmosphere for Cyclo-Cross is a bit more laid back and inviting. There are different levels of competition, including for beginners and kids.” The first thing he recommends for those interested in the sport is to go watch a race and see the excitement up close.

Nourish Your

CELLS ith Florida heat, regardless of humidity, you’re bound to become dehydrated this summer without the proper fuel to nourish, protect and restore your cells...WATER!

W

There are so many fallacies when it comes to water— “water is just water” you say? I’m going to clear up the common misconceptions, and hopefully this will help you choose wisely the next time you’re thirsty.

Let’s start with symptoms that you might not be aware of when it comes to dehydration: 1. Headaches…no its not from your friend who talks too much, it could actually be the fact that you haven’t had anything hydrating to drink that day.

Your Body is Made of it Most people know that the human body is made up of 70% water, but aren’t aware that we would be nothing if that water were JUST H2O. Minerals are a major part of keeping your body balanced and your cells healthy. There are two groups of essential minerals: Macrominerals (the minerals that you need in larger quantity) and Microminerals (also known as Trace minerals). Each nutrient has its own major role and function in the body. The accompanying chart shows examples of Macrominerals and how essential they are for proper function. Sodium

What’s the Difference? Many people have an issue understanding the difference between the different types of water and sources. Below are simple guidelines to help you make the right choice when it comes to your body. • Tap water- Most tap water contains a vast array of disinfection byproducts, chemicals, radiation, heavy metals, and even pharmaceutical drugs; all known to cause cancer, damage the thyroid, pineal gland causing issues with slow metabolism, insomnia, and more. • Purified Water- Not all purification systems are created equal, some are more efficient than others. Regardless, if its taking out what’s bad, it’s also taking out what’s good, meaning your minerals. Most purified systems throw off the molecular structure of the water; due to the lack of minerals that actually hydrate and nourish your cells, the body begins to release minerals from the bone trying to maintain homeostasis (blood plasma/fluid balance). • Distilled Water- Another form of purification but guaranteed to completely lack both toxins and minerals.

• Spring water- If from an area that is rich in minerals and the water isn’t purified (read the label to check) it’s one of the better options.

Your skin problems should not embarrass you.

• Sparkling Mineral Water- Very high source of Macro and Micro minerals including calcium & magnesium, also an excellent alternative to soda!!! • Alkaline Water- Strive to obtain naturally occurring high alkaline water from a legitimate under ground spring, alkaline water that is forced through a machine has a tendency to neutralize over time due to exposure of oxygen therefore the alkalinity decreases. How much water should I be drinking? Lets make it simple; take your body weight, divide it by two and that’s how many ounces of water you should be drinking per DAY!

5 Ways to make your water more interesting 1. Add Organic Fresh lemon- This is a quick and easy way to add minerals, increase alkalinity, boost the immune system, and your metabolism! 2. Organically Fruit Flavored Liquid Stevia drops- Seriously this stuff tastes like “Crystal Light” minus the chemicals. 3. Trace Mineral Drops- There are lots of great companies that concentrate naturally sourced minerals; you simply add 1 drop for every 1-2 ounces of water. 4. Himalayan Sea Salt- Grab a pinch and sprinkle on! Excellent source of Minerals; helps boost energy levels and balance out the Adrenals. 5. Essential Oils- Just ONE drop of orange, grapefruit, peppermint; the choice is yours! Each oil has special properties to help with healing the body, enhancing digestion, and hydrating your body.

hen losing weight, there are many seemingly huge choices to make. Which diet or food plan will work best for your tastes and lifestyle? Which exercise program will not only match your ability levels, but push you accordingly? Where is your schedule going to budge to accommodate food preparation time and this newly acquired activity? While all these questions are reasonable (if needlessly overwhelming) the single most important part of exchanging current habits for healthier ones is social support.

W

Weight loss is as much a social process as a physical one—and in relearning eating and activity habits, we should also relearn our social patterns. While you adore your best friend, is he going to hold you accountable on the nights when you’d rather hit happy hour for a good talk? While he may be the perfect companion in every other aspect, when looking for a diet buddy, you should look for someone who doesn’t “love you no matter what” when that love is only further miring you into patterns producing results that you don’t love. Another popular support person is a spouse or significant other. While s/he lives with you, and usually eats the same meals, there are going to be times when s/he is just going to want to order pizza and binge on Netflix. And with the intense, personal bonds the two of you hold, telling him or her otherwise might spark more than a fitness revolution. Your marriage is worth more than your weight loss goals—and while your partner absolutely should be on board with your lifestyle changes, they aren’t always the best choice for motivation.

LOOK FOR SUPPORT IN AN

ACCOUNTABILITY PARTNER by Chelsea McCutchin

40 FIT941.com

When seeking an accountability buddy, try to find someone who is embracing the same space. Someone who will count every bite that goes into your mouth, without the opportunity for personal insult. Be brutally honest with yourself about how you got to a weight that isn’t acceptable to you, and how a support person can help guide and motivate you through challenging times—even when they might make you mad. Joining a community-fueled fitness program, like Crossfit or other group training sessions can help you find your accountability partner more quickly. However, your person will re-

veal themselves to you. Whether they’re at the gym, the yoga studio, the grocery store, or the library, and together you’ll take action. For an easier transition, here are some great places to start.

organizing fascia using simple tools like the foam roller, mobility balls (lacrosse ball and softball), exercise band, and kinesiology tape (Rock Tape). Foam rolling and the use of mobility balls is a form of self sports massage. This helps decrease muscle soreness, increase tactile acuity, relieve joint stress, and increase range of motion. Research shows that foam rolling increases nitric oxide (NO) production that in turn increases blood flow and aids in recovery. The foam roller stimulates receptors in the fascia and breaks up adhesions, allowing for greater ease of movement.

MOVEMENT IS LIFE ow well we move may determine how long we live. A Brazilian study published in the European Journal of Cardiology found that our ability to rise from a seated position on the floor was a strong indicator of our longevity. Those who had difficulty standing unassisted and had to use more than one limb for support were twice as likely to die within the six year study period. The inability to perform this simple test may be due to an old injury, spinal degeneration, muscular imbalance, or any number of factors. Fortunately, once identified these dysfunctional movement patterns can be addressed to restore proper function to the body and prevent future injury.

The key to addressing movement dysfunction is evaluating and correcting your body’s fascia. Fascia is a webbed network of connective tissue that is woven throughout the body and links all tissues. Our muscles, bones and organs don’t act independently; rather they are united by the fascia that is wrapped through and around them. The fascia in our feet connects to the top of our head in one of twelve distinct pathways called Anatomy Trains identified by body worker Thomas Myers. If the fascia is disorganized then muscles will stick together and create dysfunctional movement. Fascia is also a rich sensory organ full of nervous system receptors (mechanoreceptors) that further influences movement. We can effectively rewire faulty movement patterns by re-

Start by rolling slowly over the tissue with light pressure and when a tender area is located, use quick back and forth movements for twenty seconds. Since all our muscles are connected, you want to address the tissue locations above and below the area of soreness. If you notice that you are holding your breath or grimacing, you are applying too much pressure and need to ease up. Some areas like the feet, low back, neck, and shoulders are best to address using mobility balls. You want to slowly lower yourself over the ball or against the wall, using your body weight to adjust the pressure. You should not spend any more than a minute on each body region. An exercise band can be used effectively to mobilize and grind out adhesions in the joints. You can wrap the band around a heavy stationary object and the other end around your ankle or wrist. You can then slowly apply tension to the joint or grind it out using the pressure of the band. If you have a partner, he or she can serve as your anchor before you switch off. For hip mobility, you can step through the band, pulling it up as high as possible. Then gradually walk forward, increasing the tension and using your hands for stability. Again, spend twenty seconds using the band in various directions to address all

Kinesiology tape (Rock Tape) can be used to reduce pain, remind the body of correct posture, and reinforce proper movement. Once we unwind the fascia and stimulate the nervous system we must then strengthen the weak muscles and reinforce proper movement patterns through repetition. This will allow us to use our body more efficiently to perform at a higher level and experience more in our lives. by Rae Ann Darling Reed, USATF Level II & RRCA Certified Running Coach at RunnerGirl.com ummer fitness can sometimes be a struggle with work schedules, vacations, daycare or the lack thereof, and not to mention the heat and humidity in the 941 area code. Fortunately there are quite a few family oriented fitness activities from which to choose and literally something for everyone, from kids’ races on the beach to camps of all types.

S

The kids’ summer beach runs are presented by Sarasota County Parks and Recreation and New Balance Sarasota with support from the Manasota Track Club. These weekly races are held June 9 to August 11, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. According to Tonya Getzen Gowan, Sales Relations at New Balance Sarasota and Fleet Feet Sports Sarasota, “the runs are offered at two locations for your convenience, Siesta Beach Pavilion, 948 Beach Road, Siesta Key on Tuesdays and Brohard Beach, 1600 Harbor Drive, Venice on Wednesdays. The beach runs are one mile in length and are free. If kids register for $1.00 and complete four runs, they

will receive a free T-shirt from Sarasota County Parks and Recreation and a 50% discount shoe voucher for a pair of kids’ shoes from New Balance. The runs can be completed all at one location or mix it up and visit both beaches. All runners win a ribbon and ice pop each time they run!” After the ice pops are all handed out, the adults line up at 7:00 p.m. on Siesta Key for a free race of a different distance and theme each week. With names like the Wall Run, Pace and Race, Chick Chaser 5K, Beauty and Beast, and Adventure Run, these sandy races provide fun, fitness, and competition for all ages. “This is the 8th year that New Balance Sarasota is a proud sponsor of these fun, easy runs as it’s a great way to encourage children to exercise, making it a lifestyle choice for years to come. The whole family is also welcomed to join and run or walk on our beautiful beaches featuring the ‘world's finest, whitest sand’. All truly ideal for a comfortable run and keeping with the New Balance philosophy for exercise and being fit,” said Molly Jackson, co-owner New Balance Sarasota. While the beach runs cover a wide range of ages and abilities, there are plenty of opportunities this summer to focus on a single interest like art, circus, animals, community service, fitness, science, water sports, and camping, or improve skills in individual or team sports. Manatee County Parks and Natural Resources Department and Sarasota Parks, Recreation & Natural Resources both offer all types of summer camps from specific to general, including day long camps where kids participate in social activities, team sports, health and wellness, and arts and crafts as well as specialized mini camps that last just a few hours each day focusing on specific sport skills and fitness like football, volleyball, and running camp. Many of the area high schools provide sport specific camps as well. Southwest Florida is fortunate to be graced with many beautiful parks that host these camps. Supporting these parks through their camps helps build awareness and appreciation of Florida parks and recreation. It starts in parks. So get out there and learn a new skill, get fit with your family, be social, help a cat get adopted, improve your running form, explore nature, improve your game, build a rocket, learn the fundamentals, discover your inner artist, improve your speed and agility, and serve your community.
