Welcome to our holiday edition of Fit941.
T
he holidays are a time for giving, and no one can say that fitness enthusiasts don’t give back, in our feature story, Fitness Gives Back we hope you will be as inspired as we are by the generosity of people in the fitness industry and every person in the 941 that has moved —walked, run, worked-out, or danced—for a cause. In Fitness Gives Back, we visit with local gyms that use fitness, from burpees and dri-tri’s, to boxing and Zumba, to raise funds for worthy causes. The feature also provides a guide to a number of 941-based walks, runs and other fitness-related events that raise awareness and funding for diseases and important causes, like breast cancer and Alzheimer’s awareness. And, of course, CANDance, which outraised itself after nearly two decades of the event. Our local celebrity TV news medical and health reporter and fitness trainer Alix Redmonde speaks with us about her decades devoted to raising awareness and funding for AIDs and HIV. She recently danced her heart out to Gloria Gaynor’s ‘I Will Survive,” at CANDance, and was the top fundraiser of the night. And speaking of giving back, be sure to check out our Compete article about Doggies for Duchenne, which will at once tug at your heart strings and have you signing up to register for the two- and four-legged run and walk to help save boy’s lives. In particular, the story about a local boy and his dog Hooch will move you. We thought it was important in this issue to talk about that part of the season that’s not so welcome. For a lot of people, depression and anxiety are a holiday given, but there are ways to beat the blues by including exercise. We explore the ever-dreaded burpee in Strength, and ideas for keeping young people active during the long winter break in our Kids department. So exercise, but remember the holidays are a time for good cheer, good food, and family. Hopefully all of them will keep you feeling healthy and motivated this season.

Success Story Accolades for Freedom 4 Electric Bikes
F
reedom 4 Electric Bikes of Sarasota, which sells Pedego electric bicycles (Ebikes), was awarded Pedego’s Outstanding Dealer of the Year award for two years, has been the brand’s top seller every year since 2011, and has generally been the top seller of Ebikes on Florida’s West Coast for seven years. If you are curious about, or in the market for, an Ebike, Freedom is the place to go, owners say. Freedom 4 Electric Bikes also provides repair for all makes and models of electric bikes, and does rentals on Siesta Key and Anna Maria Island. Stephen Selph Stephen Selph’s story is an inspiration. When doctors told him he’d likely never be able to do any exercise save swimming, he bought it. He was obese and miserable. His doctors suggested bypass surgery. That was the moment that changed his life. So he emailed CrossFit Bradenton. Stephen was born with very flat feet that made it painful for him to walk. He’s had many surgeries and even had both ankles fused as well as having tendons lengthened. Because of his difficulty in walking, he’d gained a lot of weight. But when it was suggested he consider a gastric bypass, “for me was the click’ moment that made me really decide I needed to make fundamental changes to my lifestyle habits,” Stephen says. Stephen started doing Internet research to find some low impact exercise to minimize the impact on his feet and ankles, as, he says, he was “in constant pain even walking to and from the mailbox, literally. It was a vicious cycle; constant pain made getting around at all miserable but not exercising coupled with depression made for tons of weight gain.” He contacted CrossFit Bradenton, saying in an email, “It's getting to the point now where I am killing myself with this obesity, and I am sick and tired of being in pain all of the time.” CrossFit Bradenton opened its arms; Stephen joined and soon was hooked, with the entire gym cheering him on. “I have lost 120 pounds since August of 2015. It has been quite a journey, that's for sure.”
“Whether it’s a fat-tire Ebike, folding Ebike, Beach Cruiser or a City Commuter, we have more than 40 bikes on the floor and we can do conversion on your own bike as well,” owners say. They also sell and service Stromer, Magnum, EZ Pedaler, and Velec brands. For more information, visit them at 3604 South Osprey Ave., Sarasota. Call 941-993-2618, or visit the website at Freedom4E bikes.com.

OntheCover Totally Transcendent Tanning
Photographer
S
ol FX Sunless Tanning of Sarasota is a mobile spray tanning company specializing in custom tans done by hand. Owner Ashley Holland has more than five years of experience in the tanning industry. The tanning spray product is formulated using all natural, vegan and is a cruelty and paraben-free product.
GW Burns
Over the past decade, GW Burns has emerged as one of the top new glamour and fitness photographers in print, his work being featured in over 50 different photo by Ray Sopczuk international magazines. For more information, visit GWBurns. com.
Cover Model Alix Redmonde is a health & wellness journalist, a professional fitness trainer, an equestrian, and an advocate for causes close to her photo by GW Burns heart, including HIV/AIDS. When Alix was 27, she lost 63 pounds by committing to a lifestyle change that led her to a career in fitness. Moving from California to New York City, Alix was an “A-list trainer” started to appear on NYC TV as a rep for the New York Sports Club and American Health magazine, she “managed the largest Y in the world, NYC’s West Side Y,” and as a hip-hop instructor, she and dance crews would frequently appear TV. Alix moved to Sarasota, did a radio guest spot as a fitness guru and was offered a job. Now, Alix is the voice and face of fitness for ABC7 news. We’re thrilled she’s our November-December cover model.
According to Holland, the benefits of an airbrush spray tan by hand include the ability to have customized tanning, it’s a far better option than a UVA/UVB-lit tanning bed, the formula Holland uses has, “Zero risk of the dreaded orange effect,” and spray tans last longer.” Sol FX’s mobile spray tans are done in a large private tent with the necessary accoutrements like hair caps and sole-protecting foot pads, even throw-away bras/thongs are available upon request. Holland applies an ultra-fine mist tanning mist formula for all skin tones that dries almost immediately creating a “natural” looking tan, and add-ons including body shimmer and contouring. Rates range from $25 and up and depend on whether the tan is half or full body, a single session, or, to save more, packages of multiple sessions start at $120, which translates to a $45 savings and up. And, Sol FX offers significant discounts for students, military and people willing to do before and after photos or provide reviews. And since November is National Healthy Skin Month, customers will receive $5 to $20 off single and package sessions, respectively. That special will continue through December as a holiday promotion. For more information about Sol FX Mobile Tanning visit SolFxSunlessTanning.com, call or text 941-957-8790 or check out their Facebook.com/solfxsunless.

lue Door Spa and Salon now offers the M'lis Professional Contour Body Wrap. It may be used for inch-loss and diminishing of cellulite, or for detoxification and lymphatic cleansing. This amazing body wrap does both. The contour body wrap helps to free and remove trapped waste in the connective tissue, eliminating internal disfiguring deposits and stimulate inch loss. The contour cream helps stimulate the lymphatic circulation while the plastic wrap acts as an acupressure to push the lymphatic fluid up into the thoracic valve, circulating the toxins back into the bloodstream to get filtered out through the liver and the kidneys, promoting permanent inch loss. The Contour Body Wraps are often done in a series of treatments to maximize inch loss and cleansing. Call the Blue Door for more details and exceptional series savings at 941-7470111, visit its website at BlurDoorSpaAndSalon.com or location at 5234 E State Road 64, Bradenton.

n Wednesday’s Eszti Fitness offers a free class in Sarasota. Personal trainer Eszti Bazso says her experience with clients and having an understanding of their different health and fitness concerns was the primary reason she came up with the free Wednesday Fun Outside Intense Cardio class, and to say “fitness can be fun and different.”
“As personal trainer I’ve visited many gyms and have found that many people just simply don’t like the atmosphere and give it up after couple of weeks,” Eszti says. All of Eszti’s outdoor classes, including the free Wednesday class, are focused on improving body strength and, she says, the workout can “play a big role in someone weigh loss plan as well.” The free Wednesday classes are held at 6:15 p.m. at Fruitville Park, 5151 Richardson Road, in Sarasota. On occasion, the venue may change, so check Eszti’s Facebook page for updates. No special accoutrements are needed for the class: just a towel, water and some hand weights. Eszti says her classes are “where sport becomes your lifestyle.” For more information, Eszti Fitness on Facebook or EsztiFitness.com.

Suncoast HalfMarathon Canceled, But ‘Celebration’ Isn’t
T
he Active Suncoast Foundation’s annual Suncoast Half Marathon road race on Lakewood Ranch will not take place this January, 2017, according to its website. “Newly established road closure requirements along the course and in the communities would present a hardship to the residents who host the event and the logistics required make it impractical to hold the race,” the announcement reads. “While it was a difficult decision to place the race on hiatus and look into alternatives for 2018, we want to thank our past participants, volunteers, sponsors and residents of the Country Club West communities for supporting the event for the last four years,” the statement continues. “We also still want to encourage everyone to remain active and provide you a way to show your support for Active Suncoast. Just because we aren’t holding the race in 2017 doesn’t mean we still can’t celebrate the accomplishment of finishing a half marathon. Whether you do one before January 15, planning to do one after, or rack up your 13.1 one mile a day, the party is still on at the 2017 Suncoast Half Marathon Celebration,” according to the website. A call for volunteers for the celebration is posted as well as is a note that “We will be publishing more about volunteering in the coming months.” For more information, visit ActiveSuncoast.org.

Very Cool Cryotherapy
W
hole Body Cryotherapy or WBC is a therapy originally developed in Japan as a healthy alternative to harmful drugs for reducing inflammation.
Studies have shown a wide variety of health benefits from this three-minute regenerative therapy. During a WBC session, the air temperature in the chamber is dropped to -250° F and while inside the body “shifts all of its resources to preservation mode, stimulating a systemic healing reaction,” say CRYOSRQ owners. “While other cold therapies can be of benefit, they all have a local effect, only benefiting the application site,” owners say. “WBC is systemic which means it benefits the entire body. Studies have shown decreased pain and inflammation, faster recovery and healing from injuries, reduction of depression and anxiety, improved restorative sleep, increased metabolism, improved skin tone due to collagen production, and an improved immune system.” To learn more, or to schedule a session contact CRYOSRQ by calling 941-777-4242 or visit CRYOSRQ.com.

Fitness Gives Back By Ellyn Santiago
t’s that time of the year and we believe at Fit941 it’s true that to give is better than to receive. It just feels better. In our communities, people are generous and giving generally, but in the fitness community, the generosity knows few bounds, so we’re taking a look at the many ways that Fitness Gives Back, keeping in mind that this is by no means a complete look at all the ways folks get fit while giving back in the 941, but from walks, runs, marathons, triathlons and other multisport events, to events held in local gyms like burpee challenges and Zumba-thons, or gyms that donate portions of member fees to charity or hold silent auctions as charity fundraisers, fitness is about getting and giving; getting healthy while giving back. Talk about win-win.

Before the ice bucket challenges of a couple of years ago, most people knew amyotrophic lateral sclerosis as Lou Gehrig’s disease. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. The Sarasota 2017 ALS Walk is slated for March 4 in Phillippi Estates. Walkers raised more than $50,000 in 2016, so it’s a big event and helps bring much needed research funding dollars. If you’re looking to lace up for ALS, visit alsa.org for more information on how to participate.
March of Dimes’ March for Babies of Manasota-Englewood is held annually and raises tens of thousands of dollars. A walk not often heard about is the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention ‘Out of the Darkness’ Walk. Held on Siesta Key Beach in October, the walk exceeded its goal and raised more than $40,000 to help “save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.” AFSP helps fund research, raise awareness about mood disorders and suicide prevention as well as promote

The Active Suncoast Foundation, a community-focused non-profit, features races and marathons that are designed to “encourage physical activity, physical fitness, and healthy diet.” Fitter people are healthier people. Among the myriad activities the foundation sponsors and support include its very own Sharks Tooth 10k, Frosty 5k and Suncoast Half-Marathon. The Active Suncoast Foundation’s events have raised $65,000, according to its website, and all that money remains in Manatee and Sarasota counties. Frosty 5K will be Saturday, December 17, the 8th annual Shark's Tooth 10K will be on Saturday, March 4, 2017. The Suncoast Half Marathon slated for January of 2017 has been placed on “hiatus” because of “road closure requirements along the course.” To learn more visit ActiveSuncoast.org.

All the proceeds from the event, which last year raised more than $50,000, go to Sarasota’s ABA Academy, a nonprofit that works to help develop the full potential of students with Autism Spectrum Disorders and other disabilities. Kelli Jaco, co-owner with husband Adam, of Jaco’s Boxing, says the Jacos vs. Autism event is one part festival with games for kids, music, food, drink, auction and fun and one part non-stop boxing. Last year nearly 1,000 people showed their support. “Adam and I, along with our event co-chair Amy Tanaka, are so honored to host each year and look forward to our 2017 event.”Kelli said. The April 2016 24-hour event had some participants buying a 30-minute private training session for $100 and non-stop amateur fights and, as if they had any energy left, Kelli says she and Amy did a “burpee challenge” where over the course of the 24 hours, did a burpee for every donated dollar: “We passed 4,800 this year.”
“That we were able to donate that money to Love & Grace ministries and tell nine more kids in Haiti that they could go to school this year, that was a big deal for them,” says Heather Flanagan, regional manager and coach for the Sarasota OTF locations.

The CANDance-ing Queen of Giving By Ellyn Santiago Diminutive in stature but a powerful force, Alix is no stranger to giving back to her community and to the causes she holds dear, like fighting for AIDS and HIV awareness, education and research funding. And, Alix is also no stranger to fitness; she is a certified instructor. “I’ve been rehearsing my little toes off,” Alix said just days before the event. “It’s a very different athleticism than what I’m used to as a fitness instructor; this is a completely different way of moving for me.” Alix, who has taught hip-hop dance but has no experience with ballroom dancing, is also a spin class instructor and an equestrian. Ballroom dancing, she says requires “a different strength; you’re using a lot of core strength and a lot of balance.”
Alix Redmond was the top fundraiser of the night, a night that brought in some $200,000 for the Community AIDS Network (CAN). where we donate monies raised for great causes,” Heather says. “This is what it is all about, giving back.” To support OTF charitable giving, email Heather at Heather.OtfSarasota@gmail.com.
Zumba-thon for Breast Cancer Research
In October, A Better Fit A Better You held a four-hour Zumba-thon to raise awareness and money for breast cancer research. Instructors, including ‘That's Dancing’ teachers, led the Zumba-thon which also featured vendors providing massages and skin analysis. More than $500 was raised, says owner Beth Ann Savoy. For more information visit ABetterFitABetterYouFitnessStudio.com
For more than a quarter century, CAN has been serving the needs of the HIV/AIDS community regionally. A private, not-for-profit organization, its Comprehensive Care Centers provide treatment, care and continual wellness of people living with HIV, Hepatitis C and sexually transmitted diseases and as of April 2016, owns and operates 23 medical clinics all over Florida. The CANDance 'Dancing with the Stars’ fundraiser was held in midOctober and featured six professional dancers working the floor with six area celebrities, the latter not professional dancers. The 17th annual event, which sells out every year, raised the most money it’s ever raised during the event, organizers say. Alix, the ABC 7 news’ health and medical reporter, may have helped take it over the top.
Alix says the CANDance ‘Dancing with the Stars’ fundraiser was her “first time dancing for a cause, but not my first time being active for a cause.” “And it wasn’t my first time completely committing to an AIDS/HIV charity,” she says. Alix did the ‘City of Hope’s Workout for Hope,’ in the 1990s, which benefitted City of Hope National Medical Center and its Alpha Clinic which is “dedicated to the rapid research and development of stem cell-based therapies for cancer, HIV/AIDS and other diseases.” Alix was the ‘Workout for Hope’ New York regional chair team leader. Out of the 60 competing U.S. cities in ‘Workout for Hope,’ Alix’s team was the number one fundraiser. “We brought in more than $275, 000,” she says, adding that fundraising for AIDS/HIV-related charitable organizations is “near and dear to my heart. I have lost more friends (to AIDS) than I can count on my fingers and toes.”

rayson is 13 now; his family, friends, anyone who has ever met him, and many that never have, pray he lives a long life. Gray’s best four-legged friend Hooch certainly does. So make sure you (and your dog!) are in Lakewood Ranch on Sat. Feb. 11, 2017 on what will likely be a Florida-cool and crisp morning. That day hundreds of two and four-legged runners and walkers, will lace, and leash, up for the ‘Doggies 4 Duchenne’ 5K run (or 1-mile walk) fundraiser.
G
The second annual race raises money to help find a cure for Duchenne, the disease that may claim young Grayson’s life, as well as for the Humane Society at Lakewood Ranch. It’s a great partnership because Grayson was recently paired with a service dog, Hooch, who is not only a now-beloved companion, but helps Grayson navigate the world a little better. Grayson hopes people will come out again for what he says is the, “Best race ever to save me and my furry friends.” Grayson’s mother Jennifer Tullio, who began the ‘Another Day for Gray,’ foundation to help educate and advocate for Duchenne research and finding a cure, says “Grayson's first love is his service dog Hooch, but his heart and spirit shines around any furry, four-legged animal.” Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a fatal genetic disorder diagnosed in boys and results in progressive loss of strength and muscle weakness which leads to serious medical problems, particularly issues relating to the heart and lungs. Young men with Duchenne typically live into their late 20s. There is no cure. Yet. “And it goes without saying that finding a cure for Duchenne will ultimately save Grayson's heart,” Jennifer says. Doggies 4 Duchenne was created by best friends Rebekah Boos and Monika Oberer, both runners; one with a passion for helping animals and the other a devotion to helping fight Duchenne. 30 HOLIDAY 2016

“For me personally, I’m a huge animal rights person,” says Rebekah who is a Humane Society at Lakewood Ranch board member, vegetarian and frequent animal rescuer. Rebekah says she and friend Monika first met while training for a race and became fast friends. And the more they got to know each other, the more they discovered their respective devotion to charitable causes. “Animals are my passion and ‘Another Day for Gray,’ is Monika’s. It’s so essential we find a cure soon,” Rebekah says. “We thought, ‘why not just put the two together,’ especially (since) Grayson loves animals and has his service dog. It’s always been a dream to organize a 5k for animals and Monika is a go-getter, so she was the right person to partner with. It’s just been so great, such a great synergy.” Monika says she and Rebekah founded Doggies 4 Duchenne, “Because we love dogs and we love Grayson and we want to give back to the community.” Jennifer agrees: “Doggies 4 Duchenne couldn't be a better marriage if you tried. Monika and Rebekah have put together an amazing event that promises to be fun, family-and petfriendly all while making a difference.” Monika says it felt “amazing” to be able to present $4,000 checks to both the humane society and the foundation for Grayson.
“My heart warms up giving back to the Humane Society at Lakewood Ranch and to my buddy Grayson, he has a special spot in my heart, and the dogs, too.” Monika is quick to add that while she and Rebekah founded the event, there would be no Doggies 4 Duchenne without help. “We are so grateful for all the support and all the sponsors. Something as amazing as this doesn’t happen without a lot of people helping and sponsoring,” she says. Like CrossFit Lakewood Ranch, which hosts Doggies 4 Duchenne and many, many more, all of whom can be found on the Doggies 4 Duchenne Facebook page, Monika adds. At the 2016 event, where more than 200 people and canines participated, over $8,000 was raised and split evenly between both ‘Another Day for Gray’ and the Humane Society at Lakewood Ranch. Duchenne can be passed from parent to child, but approximately 35 percent of cases occur because of a random spontaneous mutation. In other words, it can affect anyone. Although there are medical treatments that may help slow its progression, there is currently no cure for Duchenne. If you can’t make the February 2017 race, you can donate on the same site where on registers for the race: RunSignUp. com. ryan Lieberman, co-owner of GYM SRQ Fitness & Fuel, slated to open this month, says the experience at Sarasota’s newest gym will be an unparalleled one.
“We are taking advantage of a lot of the technology out there now. The cryotherapy is a big one. We have the first cryotherapy sauna in South Sarasota and everybody is pretty excited about that,” he says. “The beautiful thing is it’s not torture; you’re in there for 30 seconds to three minutes, tops. We’ve had a lot of people sign up excited about being able to use the cryotherapy sauna.” But it’s not just the very cool cryotherapy chamber that’s different. GYM SRQ will also feature 3D body scanning, a 13,000 square foot facility with state-of-the-art equipment, a power rig athletic area, group and personal training and member discounts. Bryan has more than 25 years of experience in the fitness field. It is his passion. When he moved to Sarasota more than 12 years ago, he helped transform the face of fitness here beginning with his work as a personal trainer at then32 HOLIDAY 2016

Lifestyle Family Fitness, later an LA Fitness franchise. After LA Fitness, Bryan and his wife, partner and fellow personal training director Sohni took Crunch to new heights, he says, “playing a large role into developing the Sarasota location into the most successful club and personal training department of all Crunch franchises nationally.” Following that success, Bryan decided to go in a different direction and pursue a locally-owned club not bound by franchise or corporate policies, which hamper innovation, he says, and the idea of GYM SRQ was born. “We feel there’s a huge void in the fitness industry at the moment meaning service and really paying attention to what clients want and need. And, what employees want and need. Everyone knows the problem in this industry is retention; it’s hard to keep members year to year only 30 percent will stay and as far as trainers go, only 12 percent will stay from year to year. There’s a lot of turnover in the industry. We consider turnover failure,” Bryan says. "It seems like, especially the big companies, they just kind of build turnover into their business plan. If a company was only keeping 30 percent of the cus-
tomers year to year that would be considered utter failure. But for whatever reason, in this industry, it’s considered the norm. We want to change that. We want to make an impact.” And with GYM SRQ, he believes they will. “So since we all have been in the industry for so long, we wanted to accomplish a few things: create a place that is a career path for the professionals; to eliminate that turnover, to compensate them properly for their work and cross-train all employees – eliminate departmental divisions and have one team that is cross-trained. Our trainers are not only crosstrained each is nationally accredited and certified. Everybody in the building is educated to training members, assisting members, touring members, and signing-up members,” Bryan says. “So that’s one thing we’re doing different than just about everybody else.” Different by taking its mission even further, he says. Welcome RENEW SRQ, a partner health café and wellness center located next to the gym at Beneva Village Shoppes. Slated to open in late December/early January, RENEW SRQ, which aims to “improve the life of your body,” will provide sports
nutrition, fresh-pressed juices, organic smoothies, meal prep services, dietary supplements, Rx weight loss, as well as massage therapy, hormone therapy, botox injections, even ant-aging stem cells. Bryan’s wife and GYM SRQ co-owner Sohni, a former collegiate volleyball athlete, earned a Bachelor’s degree in management, is a certified personal trainer, and certified assisted stretching expert. Another co-owner, Drew Adkison is a certified personal trainer and sports nutritionist, with decades of experience including gym operations in Florida and Georgia. Former tennis pro Vamsee Chappidi is GYM SRQ’s sole investor and CEO. Chappidi is a co-owner of the Sarasota Tennis Open and owns a number of other successful Sarasota businesses. Depression & Anxiety WITH EXERCISE By Anna Panzarino
ou may know the feeling: down-in-thedumps, blue, gloomy. Even people who have never experienced clinical depression can suffer from what’s known as SAD or Seasonal Affective Disorder; indeed, 3 million Americans are afflicted every year. SAD is essentially depression that hits the same time every year, usually from late fall until the end of winter, though SAD is less common in our neck of the woods since the seasonal change is not nearly as dramatic as say, Maine’s. That said, here in the 941, we too suffer from depression seasonally, though it’s more closely related to the what of the season: the holidays, Thanksgiving to New Year’s. The holiday blues are real and it hurts. But why does it happen?
Y
According to the University of California Davis, the reasons vary but generally include time changes, lack of sleep and 40 HOLIDAY 2016

exercise, too much food and too much booze, unrealistic expectations about ourselves and our families, and the overall stress of the whole shebang: shopping, cooking, partying, overscheduling, and for a lot of us, the holidays are a sad reminder of those we have lost, be it a death, a horrible tragedy or even a bad breakup. Any or all of these factors may play a role in a case of holiday depression. So how do you know if you’re depressed? The symptoms may include many of those found in major depression like feeling down, sad or discouraged, hopeless or worthless, having little interest in activities, irritability and mood swings, little to no energy, oversleeping and overeating,
problems with relationships, restlessness, difficulty concentrating, withdrawal from others, and agitation among myriad others. There’s no shortage of advice about how to beat the holidays blues but some of the best comes from the Mayo Clinic beginning with cutting yourself some slack. You’re sad, it’s ok. But at the same time, you need to “acknowledge your feelings.” Cry if you need to, but don’t isolate if possible. Let someone you love know how you’re feeling. The Mayo Clinic suggests doing something like volunteering; helping others may help to lift your spirits. It also recommends lowering your holiday expectations; it’s not always going to be amazing and perfect. And, let things go, especially with family differences. And for sure try not to overspend because who doesn’t get depressed when they’re broke.

One of the best ways to try and help bring yourself out of the dumps is by really sticking to healthy habits like eating right, sleeping and, perhaps most importantly, through regular exercise. While science admits that the link between depression (and anxiety) and exercise are not entirely clear, what is known is that physical activity can ease some symptoms primarily through better sleep, for starters. The Mayo Clinic and WebMD agree that chemicals in the brain including endorphins and endocannabinoids can help people feel better. But perhaps the benefits that are most striking are less physical than they are psychological and emotional. Increased confidence is a big one. If you feel better physically and feel good about your appearance, that’s a boost. Social interaction is huge, too. Working out with others while at first may seem like the last thing you want to do when you’re depressed, is helpful. And then there’s just the basic distraction factor; you don’t have the time to dwell when you’re sweating your butt off on the barre. And bottom line, it’s a healthy coping mechanism. However, if none of these suggestions are effective, please seek out help from a professional. Sometimes, we just need some help. But bottom line, exercise is known to help so flip through the pages of Fit941 and you’re sure to find a great gym, class, or event.

Mashed Rosemary Sweet Potatoes
It’s just mandatory that there be mashed on the table at Thanksgiving, am I right? But subbing out sweet potatoes (and no butter!) for white potatoes (keeping in mind potatoes are not your enemy; tubers are beautiful foods, in moderation) means less calories, less carbs, more fiber, tons more Vitamin A and lots of other nutrients. We love these sweet, savory rich-tasting and delicious mashed sweet potatoes. No marshmallows, please. This recipe will serve 8.
Starch Ingredients
4 medium- large sweet potatoes 3 ½ tbsp. high-quality, extra virgin organic olive oil 4 sprigs of fresh rosemary, 3 of them minced Sea salt and ground black pepper to taste
Preparation
V
V+ LF
So there’s two ways to do this. You could boil your potatoes with a sprig of rosemary until tender or, like we prefer, roast them instead. If you choose the latter, preheat oven to 400. Rub (or brush) sweet potatoes with 1 ½ tbsp. of the olive oil and sprinkle with a little sea salt and ground black pepper and roast until tender, probably around an hour, give or take. When done, mash (skins on or off; we suggest keeping them on, but it’s up to you) with the rest of the olive oil. Then add the rosemary slowly and uniformly, folding into mashed sweet potatoes. Salt and pepper to taste if needed and garnish with a sprig of rosemary, if desired.
Citrus Green Beans With Pine Nuts & Shallots
V
V+ LF
So easy, so delicious and so good for you and the only real calories come from the olive oil, so …’nuff said. One note: since we’re in the state that knows citrus better than any other, there are a number of citrus varieties you could substitute for the basic navel orange—that are in season November and December, like Hamlins or Pineapple Oranges, tangelos or tangerines, or even the super sweet and juicy White Marsh Grapefruit. Experiment!
Vegetables Preparation
Ingredients
1 pound fresh green beans, washed and trimmed ½ cup thinly sliced shallots ¼ cup grated orange rind (or other favorite citrus fruit) ¼ cup fresh orange (or other favorite citrus fruit) juice 1 tbsp organic extra-virgin olive oil 1 tbsp toasted pine nuts Coarse sea salt and ground fresh black pepper to taste
44 HOLIDAY 2016
FIT941.COM
In a large pot, cook fresh green beans in rapidly boiling, lightly salted water for about 2-3 minutes. Rinse and drain in cool water. In a very large non-stick sauté pan over medium heat, add EVOO and sauté shallots until they are nice and tender. Next add green beans and stir to evenly distribute the shallots. Finally, add the juice and rind stirring gently and sprinkle with coarse sea salt and ground fresh black pepper to taste. Top with crunchy pine nuts. Serve.
Super Low-Carb Turkey Stuffing
Side dish
There’s no bread, cauliflower stands in, but the taste is on point. This recipe delivers tons of flavor while being very low carb (about 5 net carbs per serving) and gluten-free. Yummy.
GF LC
Ingredients
1 lb. sausage, (pork or turkey, and the flavor is up to you; mild sweet Italian works nicely.) 1 large head cauliflower, chopped 1 cup sweet onion, chopped 1 cup celery, chopped ¼ cup parsley, chopped 1 tsp fresh sage, torn ½ tsp dried fennel 1 tsp fresh thyme, torn 1 cup white wine ½ cup walnuts, chopped Sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste
Preparation
Cook sausage over medium heat in a large sauté pan, making sure it’s really crumbly. Once the meat is cooked through (no pink showing), add the onion and celery and cook until the onions and celery are soft, about 5 or 6 minutes. Add the cauliflower and cook for about 10 minutes so the cauliflower becomes nicely caramelized. Add the wine and cook until the liquid is gone. Add the walnuts and stir gently cooking for another minute or so. Remove from heat and add the herbs and sea salt and fresh ground pepper to taste. Serve!
Sweet & Tart Apple Cranberry Crisp
V
V+ DF
What we love about this recipe, besides that it’s spectacular, is that it works for Thanksgiving or Christmas nicely.
Ingredients
Dessert
Filling: 1 ½ cups tart peeled apples 1 cup whole, fresh cranberries Stevia or similar sugar substitute to equal ½ cup 1 ½ tbsp. whole wheat flour
Topping: ¾ cups quick-cook whole oats ¼ cup whole wheat flour ¼ cup brown sugar (if you can find a good, organic brown sugar substitute, use that) ¼ cup Vegan margarine, melted (or ghee) ¼ cup chopped pecans
Preparation
Pre-heat oven to 350. Combine all filling ingredients and put in baking dish. Combine all topping ingredients until crumbly and layer on top of filling. Bake for 35-45 minutes.

L VE YOUR
GUT
AND IT WILL L VE YOU BACK
robiotics are living bacteria and yeasts naturally found in the body and are really important for one’s overall health, especially digestive health. And while the very word bacteria is for some synonymous with something bad, think all that anti-bacterial stuff on the market, our bodies are full of bacteria; most good, and some not so good. Probiotics are found in foods and when one needs to balance out that good gut bacteria, supplements are available.
P
“Probiotics are essential to our health because most of our immune system is housed in our gut,” says Danielle Russo, manager of Richard’s Foodporium on Ringling Boulevard in Sarasota. “Diet and environmental factors can upset the balance of good bacteria.” Danielle says she regularly takes supplements. “I take a probiotic every day to ensure my good bacteria outnumber the bad,” 46 HOLIDAY 2016
she says. “I also try to incorporate probiotic-rich foods, such as kimchi, sauerkraut, and kefir.” Bonni London, owner of Sarasota-based London Wellness, is a New York University-trained nutritionist and has been an accredited, registered and licensed dietitian for the past 17 years. Bonni does not mince words when it comes to probiotics. “Bugs are your friends,” she says and advises that if “you haven’t befriended these microscopic creatures, otherwise known as bacteria, now is the time.” “There is a battle going on down in your gut, and you need to think about that every time you open your mouth, because you are not the only one who is eating,” Bonni says. Most of the bacteria inside us are beneficial, Bonni says, and “need support for their survival.” But she goes further: “Our survival is actually dependent on

these bacteria. We are constantly bombarded with pathogens, dangerous or even at times deadly bacteria. However, we rely on beneficial bacteria to keep these pathogens at bay.” But the bacteria also play a major role in not just controlling but determining our weight. Research suggests that the type and species of ‘bug,’ or bacteria living in our gut determine whether we’re lean or tend toward obese and, for the latter, at risk for Type 2 diabetes. There’s a fix, though. We can re-condition our metabolisms by exacting revenge on the firmicutes (which are directly associated with obesity) and replace them with the lean-loving bacteroidetes, which love fiber. Firmicutes adore sugar, so we know they’re evil because when you have an overgrowth of them you crave sugar and carbs. They are strong, too, sending messages to your brain to eat more simple processed carbohydrates. So, if you’re the person that’s been fighting

“Starve the bad guys and feed the good guys,” Bonni says and the science agrees. “Since we need to support the growth of these bacteria with appropriate provisions, vegetables are good, everyone agrees, and now we have more reason to seek them out. The undigested fiber in vegetables, fruit, grains, and legumes are fuel to support your microscopic support team,” she explains. “In addition, it has been shown that adding fermented foods to you diet, which contains naturally occurring bacteria, is an additional strategy to arm your team.” Bonni, like Danielle, suggests more fermented foods in one’s diet, like sauerkraut, kimchi, miso, kefir, kombucha tea, or apple cider vinegar. To learn more about probiotics, visit one of the many Richard’s Foodporium locations in Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte and Pinellas counties; you’ll find a list on the website RichardsFoodporium. com or check in with the very knowledgeable Bonni London at LondonWell ness.net.

BODY COMPOSITION
GET TANKED, & GET RESULTS
f BMI had its way, every ripped gym rat would be called obese. You know the body mass index drill; the old height and weight calculation that tells one if they’re healthy or not, just-right or obese, at risk for heart disease and diabetes or fit as a fiddle.
I
The problem is, since BMI only calculates a healthy body based on that simple formula, and well, a pound is a pound be it fat or muscle, that metric can be very deceptive, especially for the uber fit. But body composition, ah, now that’s another story. While not as easy to determine, body comp is a measure of how much of one’s weight is made up of lean mass – muscle, bone, tissue and water -- versus fat. It is at once a more accurate, and complex, analysis of a healthy body. One way is to literally do the math: 1/ Db = w/Dw + f/Df + p/Dp + m/Dm. If you can answer this equation, or at the very least explain it, go to the head of the class. For the rest of us, basically everyone, there’s hope because there are myriad ways to determine body composition. From air or water displacement total body imaging, ultrasounds, skin folds or even the good old tape measure method. 48 HOLIDAY 2016
A DIFFERENT KIND OF SCALE
One way to determine body composition is though Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). In this process, a painless electrical current is sent through one’s body on a BIA machine or scale. The rate that current travels through the body is used to calculate the amount of fat-free mass and percentage of actual body fat. There’s a far more complicated definition, but that’s the gist. And many trainers and nutritionists employ that data rather than simply BMI when helping clients. If you ask personal trainer, sport nutritionist and GYM SRQ staffer Cody Pleszewski, he’ll tell you that knowing a client’s body comp is an important tool when he’s advising on nutrition. Especially when gathered from BIA. “It’s crucial to look at what makes up most of someone’s weight, body fat, water weight, lean muscle,” he says. “Without these numbers it's hard to set up a proper diet.”
FIT941.COM
Cody provides examples: “Maybe you don't drink enough water and that could be a reason you feel like you're gaining weight without having the scale change numbers, but without checking your body composition, I can't tell as fast what the problem could be.” At Complete Nutrition, owner Jeff Bueth says, they use the state-of-the-art InBody BIA machine to determine body comp. InBody was founded in the mid-1990s by a Harvard Medical School-trained physician. The InBody machine at Complete Nutrition uses Direct Segmental Multi-Frequency BIA with an Eight-Point Tactile Electrode Method to accurately measure body compositions, according to the InBody website. “No matter the goal, weight loss, maintenance, or muscle growth, the InBody scale will hold you accountable,” Jeff
says. “Printouts of your body analysis show you muscle versus fat, strength and hydration, and also basal metabolic rate.” Jeff says, “We set you up for success," by providing the correct meal plan based on body composition.
GETTING TANKED
Ever been to a carnival or charity event or kid’s party with a dunk tank? We’re talking the total body water (TBW), also known as the dunk tank method of gauging body comp. Actually called a hydrostatic tank, this method takes about 10 minutes and following that dunking, you get a detailed report that shows fat and fat-free body mass, as percentages and in actual weight, how much fat, if any, you need to lose to achieve your desired body composition, how many calories per day you burn without exercising or how many you burn from different exercises and, tells you what’s your ideal body fat based on age and gender. Chris Giese, Southwest Florida BodyFatComp franchise owner says, the “hydrostatic method is the gold standard for measuring body density.” “A hydro-static tank is not an instrument, so it doesn't need to be calibrated like other methods,” he says. “It uses the known unchangeable densities of water at any given temperature, adipose (fat) tissue, and fat-free tissue as necessary mathematical variables.” Chris says the “test results are incredibly reproducible time and time again.” “This makes tracking body composition trends with the hydro-static method over time very easy and accurate,” he says. The mobile BodyFatTest ‘dunk tank’ will visit Sarasota for hydrostatic body composition testing at Real Fitness on Nov. 11. For more information on body composition analyses and nutrition, visit CompleteNutrition.com, GymSrq.com or BodyFatTest.com.

In the 941, there are myriad camps and programs to help keep your kids active and moving during both the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday breaks. Plus, many folks are working during the holiday breaks and in the case of the winter break for local schools, that break is long; both Manatee and Sarasota county school children have an 11-school day winter break, so local programs and camps are a win-win: kids will be super active and are not at home without you. n the 1930s, a physiologist named Royal H. Burpee developed, and then illustrated, an “exercise test” for his PhD. dissertation. Later, what would become a very popular exercise also became a tool for the U. S. military dubbed the “Burpee Test” to assess the fitness of men headed to battle in World War II. So it's not surprising that the exercise is as popular today and effective as it was back years ago.

According to Jim Denofa, owner of CrossFit Havoc of Palmetto, the burpee is a “great way to increase your heart rate in a short amount of time, or keep your heart rate up for extended amounts of time. And it is in essence when one jumps to and from the floor.” “You can get an extremely intense workout doing burpees alone or, you could increase the difficulty of other movements by adding burpees into the mix,” Jim says. The burpee perfectly illustrates the simplicity of a really perfect exercise that can be quickly learned and mastered, and is extremely effective.

back as if to plank but keep your arms extended. 4. Quickly return to feet to squat and then jump up from the squat position.

The explanation of how to execute a burpee may sound difficult when you break it down into steps, but it could not be any simpler to execute.

BENEFITS OF ANTI-INFLAMMATORY SUPPLEMENTS FOR ATHLETES
he benefits from regular exercise and fitness maintenance are immeasurable. A good workout produces increased energy, higher selfesteem, better athletic performance and overall improved general health and well-being.

Unfortunately, rigorous exercise can also generate joint pain and muscle soreness caused by inflammation. The ability to bounce back from a long run, intense game or marathon bicycle ride is essential to being fit, happy and healthy. Well, there is good news for athletes. There are several anti-inflammatory supplements on the market that can help to alleviate pain. Most are available at any local health food store and when combined with a healthy, balanced diet can ensure your body has the necessary nutrients to exercise and recover. Consult your physi54 HOLIDAY 2016

Fish Oils - These omega-3 fatty
acids are commonly known for their ability to help lower cholesterol and improve circulation. Recent studies have also lauded their anti-inflammatory properties. In particular, fish oil helps ease joint pain and other symptoms related to arthritis. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, it has fewer side effects than nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen. When taken daily, fish oil can reduce short-term back, shoulder and neck pain. Typically, fish oil comes in a gel capsule or liquid form.
Turmeric - Make sure that the turmeric has curcumin listed prominently on the bottle since it is the anti-inflammatory molecule in the turmeric root. It's a relative of ginger, which is also available as

a supplement. Most people are familiar with curcumin as a spice in curry or other Indian food. Turmeric does not easily absorb into the bloodstream so it should be taken with a black pepper extract which accelerates absorption properties. It is a powerful antioxidant that blocks NF-kb molecules and reduces enzymes that cause inflammation. Turmeric is available in capsules and liquid form.
CoQ10 - Or the co-enzyme, Q10, is also a powerful antioxidant that fights free radicals in the bloodstream. A report from the Journals of Gerontology, Study A, showed that CoQ10 could be effective when paired with a Mediterranean diet (olive oil, fruit, and vegetables) in helping to reduce joint pain and arthritic symptoms. CoQ10 can also enhance the anti-inflammatory properties of Vitamin E, reducing blood levels of C-reactive protein, which are an accurate indicator of inflammation.

Probiotics - We all have probiotics
living in our digestive tracts. Fermented dairy products and pickled vegetables are excellent sources of probiotics, which fight infection sources like harmful microbes. Probiotics are beneficial for athletes because they also reduce C - reactive protein that creates inflammation. Probiotic supplements are available in capsule, tablet and liquid forms and are available in any natural foods or nutrition store.
Golden Milk - This is the only milk athletes should drink. It's a combination of coconut oil, almond milk, water and turmeric, which is made into a paste by blending the ingredients in a pot and cooking it slowly on a stovetop. Honey or ginger can be added for flavor. Drink it in the evening or after a workout and the curcuminoid will block the inflammatory pathways preventing the protein that triggers pain and swelling in muscles and joints. Each of these supplements will help reduce inflammation. But avoiding certain

Inflammation inflammatory foods and food groups is equally important for athletes. All processed foods are harmful. Limit the intake of refined grains, such as pasta, pizza, cereal or white bread. Milk is another product that can create problems. The more it is processed the more inflammatory it becomes. Sugar and high fructose corn syrup are prevalent in snack foods and soft drinks. Sugar is more addictive than some narcotics. By the time it's refined and processed it contains none of the original, natural elements of sugarcane. Synthetic sweeteners are not a viable alternative either. Vegetable oils, such as soy, corn, sunflower, canola or any other hydrogenated oil, should be avoided and the fried foods which are often prepared with those oils. When preparing meals, stick to extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil, whenever possible. Staying healthy and fit demands not only routine exercise and athletic activities, but a keen sense of nutrition.
