Increase Endurance
and
Delay Muscle Fatigue With the Sarasota/Bradenton ITU Triathlon just around the corner triathletes are in their last ditch effort to increase their endurance and delay "the wall." During this time, and while tapering training, many have learned that acupuncture in a couple specific points allows them to increase their endurance while delaying their muscle fatigue point. These treatments combined with care for any health or physical issue that may be occurring decreases recovery time and allows the triathlete to perform longer without fatigue. Recent research has documented the effects of acupuncture on decreasing muscle fatigue and improving running times and pulse rates. Results of this research demonstrated that with two simple points being treated the endurance of the muscle group tested became far more superior to the
group with no treatment. Thus showing that acupuncture can and does delay the onset of muscle fatigue so an athlete can perform longer without fatigue. More research looked at running times at 5000 meters at 75% maximum pulse rate. It compared three groups control, placebo and treatment group. The group with acupuncture showed improved running times each run (hence faster runs), improved heart rate recovery (faster return to normal heart rate) and overall recovery. This research shows something that acupuncture has shown for centuries, endurance and recovery improves with its use. For many athletes that have it done they always improve and feel better overall while training than without it.

publisher's note arasota is a top fitness hub in the country. If you belong to a gym, you’ve probably noticed how crowded the place has been for about the first 6 to 8 weeks of the year. Getting into shape, or back into shape, as it were, is the number one New Year’s resolution people make. Are you one of these optimistic-hopeful-souls? Typically after 8 weeks, the gyms go back to the way they were for the 10 months prior to New Years day.

How about this year you take a stand, and really learn what you need to do to build a strong, limber, fast, lean and healthy body. When I began pursuing this venture into fitness publishing, I was familiar with all kinds of local fitness clubs, whether it was hard-core pumping iron, or serene and peaceful yoga, and just about everything in between. I had taught classes in 6 different gyms in town. I had run all the major races, including the very first Sarasota Marathon (The Grouper Run), many Ringling Bridge Runs, the YMCA’s Superbowl Sunday Mini-Tri, and a dozen others. I thought I had a pretty good handle on what there was in our fair city. As I meandered my way around town meeting all the gym owners, studio owners, outdoor fitness instructors and so on, I learned that I didn’t know a fraction of what was out there for us in Sarasota. So many talented professionals. So many different choices. Keep your eye on this little periodical we call Fit941 Magazine because we are just beginning to uncover the hidden gems every week. I was fortunate enough to be offered the job as coach and co-host of a weekly fitness news segment on SNN (Ch 6 on Comcast), which begins on March 3rd and will air every Tuesday night thereafter during the 5:30 pm news. The segment is called Fat 2 Fit. I will coach one of SNN’s producers from a stocky 260 lbs to a goal weight of about 190 lbs. We will be utilizing every resource that Sarasota and Manatee Counties have to offer to us, from the clubs and yoga studios, boxing gyms, Pilates, CrossFit, Spin, running and lifting weights. Then there’s the massages, and the delicious and nutritious food. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s gotta do it! Check it out and see all that this great fitness community has to offer. Forget the failed new year’s resolutions! Get back in there, find your fit!

Friday Night Fights Comes to Robarts Arena
F
riday Night Fights are coming to Robarts Arena in Sarasota on April 3rd, with a boxing event featuring two title fights. Sarasota native and World Boxing Federation (WBF) North American Champion, China Smith, will defend his title during the headliner. Local supermiddleweight Aaron “The Jedi” Jaco will be featured in the co-main event, and is set to fight for a vacant WBF regional title.
Studio South Fitness Offers Money-back Fitness Guarantee
S
tudio South Fitness in Sarasota now offers a 30Day Moneyback Guarantee program for those who sign up for a one month package. Clients of the gym who do not see results within 30 days will have their membership fees completely refunded, if they meet some minimum requirements. The month package includes a personalized health plan with a nutritionist and trainer, fitness classes, and general access to the gym. Members will be given weekly weighins, as well as detailed measurements of body fat and mobility to map improvements. The general manager of Studio South Fitness, Michael Brigger, says the program is designed to inspire people to work out, and almost everyone who signs up sees fast results. “Once we figure out where you are and what direction you should be going – it’s easy. The science on getting someone to progress physically is so laid out now,” says Brigger. “It’s just getting somebody to a) have a trainer that’s smart enough to lay those progressions out and b) a place that they can do it where it’s not so crowded they can’t get anything done … it’s the individualized plan that progresses (our clients).” Studio South Fitness says the guarantee is already in full effect and will be offered on an ongoing basis. For more information on Studio South Fitness and the programs they offer, visit their website at StudioSouthFitness.com. 10 FIT941.com
Six fights are scheduled for the nationally-televised card, which is presented by PerfectEnergySports.com and sponsored by the Sarasota Open. Proceeds will benefit local charities, including Big Brothers & Big Sisters and the Robert L. Taylor Community Center. The Sarasota lion and tiger sanctuary, Big Cat Habitat, also received a donation and are expected to have some of their cats on display at the arena. The night is subtitled ‘Making History’, which fight promoter MarcAnthony Roman says is not just a tagline: “You never see two main-event fights in the same night, because you can make more money at two different events,” he says “But we’re not focused on that. We’re focused on giving back to Sarasota, because we care …” Headliner and WFB North American Champion, China Smith, noted how personal it is for his Team China to bring boxing back to Sarasota: “We will be making history by showcasing local talent and hosting two sanctioned title fights in one evening,” Smith says. “We want to bring boxing back to our hometown and give back to the community at the same time.” Tickets are on sale at Robarts Arena for a general admission price of $25. VIP and general admission are also available online at ChinaSmithBoxer.com.

Athlete Profile A Spa Service Just For Men
W
e know some Sarasotans take pleasure in year-round biking, running, and other outdoor sports in pared-down fitness-wear. But, as spring approaches, those guys who have enjoyed layering up will be shedding those sweaters and showing more body hair. JustGents, the ‘ultimate salon and spa service for men,’ extends an invitation to try out their hair removal waxing specials this March and April. All waxing treatments come with a 20 percent discount. Packages are available.
Tony Jones Jr. 2 Sport Phenom
As more men are moving towards a hygienically-healthy, well-groomed overall appearance, hair removal is becoming more popular. “We’ve seen that there’s a growing trend. People come in and want their entire body waxed,” says Theres Beutelschmidt, the Owner of JustGents.
When you watch Tony Jones Jr play football, two words come to mind: Heisman Trophy.
She says the average age of JustGents clients is between 30 and 65. Some areas of concern are the back, chest, and shoulders.
This junior from IMG Academy is truly making a name for himself on the football field and the baseball diamond. He comes from good genes; his father, Tony Jones Sr. spent 9 years in the playing professional football. Sr. tells us, “He is one of the most competitive, hard-working student athletes I have ever seen-- and I’ve coached Pop Warner all the way up to the pros. His passion to be great in the classroom and on the field is truly unbelievable … his mother and I are extremely proud of him.” Tony Sr is now head trainer at Orange Theory South Sarasota, and is described as one of the most effective trainer/motivators in town.
JustGents provides private consultations for personal hair removal plans. Services include precision haircuts, therapeutic massage; hot lather, straight razor shaves; hand and foot detailing, facials, and shoe shining.
Tony Jr has also done something that no other student has done in the history of IMG Academy. He plays and excels at 2 sports: football and baseball. He is the first ever to play on both teams, all while maintaining honor roll grades. His schedule is rigorous but the structure has made him extremely disciplined in just about every aspect of his life. Tony Jones Jr is a running back on the football field, with roughly 1000 yards/ yr rushing in his first three years of high school and 13 touchdowns this year. He is also a left fielder and powerhouse hitter, with a batting average around .400. When asked where he would like to go to college, Tony says, "I'm town between the importance of academics and playing for a school that is a contender for a national championship." Sounds like he has some choices. Keep your eye on this remarkable kid.

On1 Cycle Offers RealRyder® Bikes
T
here’s spinning. And, then, there’s RealRyder® spinning.
“It’s just insane,” says Reid Withrow, owner of ON1 Cycle, Sarasota’s first indoor cycling studio, opening downtown March 1. “The one thing we have is a product that you can’t find anywhere else in Sarasota,” says Withrow. RealRyder® bikes use core balance technology. They allow riders to move back and forth, tilt, turn, and lean. With ordinary stationary bikes, you just sit and don't engage your core. But, like riding a road bike, in which you move your body and limbs with turns and hills, RealRyder® offers a similar experience. A session with a RealRyder® improves cardiovascular, core, upper and lower body strength, and overall balance. “A regular spin class is like a Fiat. A RealRyder class is like a Ferrari,” says Withrow. “We’re like the Blue Angels flying when we’re all moving together.®” Withrow invites first timers who “just want to check it out,” to experience one week of unlimited classes for the price of a single class. Reserve a class online at On1Cycle.com or call 941-800-RYDE.

C
runch Fitness has been expanding its business in the Bradenton/Sarasota area, with plans to open several new clubs. Unlike other gyms, Crunch has fullystocked, clean facilities with simple contracts and no invasive prospecting. “The original idea behind Crunch was to make it as consumer friendly as possible,” says Vince Julien, a Crunch franchisee. “We tell you right at the point of sale what your fees are; there are no surprises.”
The pricing plans offered by Crunch are simple, with no hidden fees or surprise charges. It’s $9.95 a month for a basic membership, which includes full gym access and personal training. M
Mind Over Matter Strength
eet Dr. Linda Muniz, Sarasota resident and M.D. Her story isn’t so much one of success as it is one of incredible strength and drive. Several years ago she was diagnosed with ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. She was advised to give up her favorite pastime, skiing, due to the debilitating nature of the disease. But there was no way Linda was going to give up sports anytime soon. She hired a personal trainer and worked incredibly hard, becoming so strong that she had no trouble on the slopes that winter. The next winter started much the same: Linda took a few ski trips and stayed active. On her last outing of the season, Linda decided to enter a ski race. Her husband, Tony, and her friends pleaded with Linda not to enter, but she called her trainer and asked what he thought—“Go for it!,” he said. A short time later, Linda received a silver medal for her performance. Then, bad luck struck Linda again. After the race, on a normal run down the slopes, someone left a snowmobile where it didn’t belong and BAM! Linda hit it hard, breaking her leg, wrist, and a couple of ribs. Combined with the ALS, this kind of thing would be the end for most people—but not Linda. She spent the better part of a year in various hospitals, undergoing numerous operations to correct her injuries. Even though Linda was told she may not walk again, she was confident it was only a matter of time. After hours of painful rehab, not only did she walk, some say she was spotted jogging at the gym. To this day, she talks of one day hitting the slopes again. An optimist and a wonderful example of what it means to believe in your own inner strength, Linda’s mind-over-matter approach to defeating the limitations placed upon her are an inspiration to us all.
14 FIT941.com
“The idea is to grow around the community of Bradenton, and help improve it through health and wellness,” says Moore. “More than anything, I want people to look at us as different than other CrossFit gyms. For me, it’s more of a school of fitness and a place for education than anything else.” The doors of Rack Star CrossFit are scheduled to open on Feb. 23. For more information, visit their website at RackstarCrossfit.com.

ynergy Fitness announces the grand opening of its facility on 4289 Clark Rd in Sarasota. The gym is owned and operated locally by husbandand-wife team Justin and Stacy Flagg, both of whom are professional trainers with experience in a variety of workout systems.
American Ninja Warrior Training Grounds at Fitlorenzo Training Center in Palmetto, Fl. Over 25 + obstacles specific to ninja warrior along with some custom obstacles designed to help you conquer any course and become the next American Ninja Warrior. We specialize in training for kids to adults.
The gym lives up to its name by offering multiple cooperative classes in CrossFit, boot camp workouts, yoga, and hybrid lessons every week, with supervised childcare available for parents in need. Justin says Synergy Fitness is aiming for a supportive, team atmosphere as opposed to being just a gym where people drop by only to work out. “What we are all about is not just fitness and giving great classes, but improving someone’s overall life … and helping them be better versions of themselves – more confident and overall well-rounded individuals,” he says. “We want to get to know the people who come here (and have them) get to know each other … we want to take a personalized approach.” Despite the intimate feel, Synergy Fitness is hoping people who walk in the door looking for a gym with a ‘big city’ vibe will be right at home. RRCA Says,
“SARASOTA COUNTY IS A RUNNER FRIENDLY COMMUNITY” By Suzi Harkola
arasota County has been lauded for many of its feature attractions and quality of life amenities: best beaches, cultural attractions, neighborhoods, shopping and dining, to name just a few.
S
In 2013, the area received another distinguished honor as a Road Runners Club of America’s Runner Friendly Community®. Only four communities were named that year, having met the program’s criteria of community infrastructure, community support and local government support for running. A proven track record that organizations and business work together to promote running as a healthy exercise and sport is key to winning the coveted designation, with the goal of shining a national spotlight on runner-friendly communities. The Sarasota Athletic Association, an RRCA Club, submitted the area’s application. The area is also home to The Manasota Track Club (MTC), which was founded in 1975 and consistently has approximately 700 paid members. MTC hosts 11 races as part of their racing series; including the annual Sarasota half marathon, sanctioned events and summer beach runs, which collectively raised more than $25,000 for area beneficiaries. photography by John Joseph Revisky Shot on location at the Bradenton Riverwalk. Also noted in the application were the hundreds of miles of trails and sidewalks that wind their way along the Gulf Coast and Bayfront and into the interior portion of Sarasota County, including Myakka River State Park, Legacy Trail, and Oscar Scherer State Park.
David’s favorite event was the 2015 inaugural Sarasota Music Marathon. “The course was just stunning,” he says. “We ran through neighborhoods, Selby Gardens, the Ringling Bridge… the response was overwhelming. More than 550 volunteers and a full hot breakfast catered by Mattison's City Grille, as well, of course, as the outstanding music we heard along the way, made this a true standout event.” Sharon Jacobson, Fit2Run’s marketing brand director, notes that a primary benefit of the Running City designation is that it attracts runners from around the country to visit Sarasota and surrounding communities. “This is great for increasing tourism, as it showcases our beautiful area and its assets.”
Preserve. “Robinson Preserve 7th Annual 5k and 10k Run (March 27th this year) with 2,000 participants running through a cross country type trail is just an amazing event. The Ringling Bridge Run (2,500 participants) through downtown Sarasota, The Suncoast Half Marathon through Lakewood Ranch, The Sarasota Half Marathon Course, Oscar Scherer State Park, The Legacy Trail between Sarasota and Venice which covers 10 miles, and Emerson Point that has a special location at the mouth of the Manatee River where it meets Lower Tampa Bay are many of the area’s favorite places to run.”
She continues, “Running is safe and environmentally friendly. Fit2Run, as well as other running specialty stores in the area, participate and get involved in many community races and sponsor many area charities, raising a lot of money and support for our community.”
Kimmy Collister-Sterns, President of the Manasota Track Club, invites readers and visitors to visit ManasotaTrackClub.org. “The 'Training' link can help you find a group run to fit your schedule, or select the link to “Map My Run” to make your own,” she says. “If you are an out-oftowner, we are perfect ‘Sarasota Ambassadors’ always willing to recommend a local favorite restaurant, hot spot or entertainment venue.”

In February, the Fleet Feet store moved from the former site down the road to 711 S. Osprey Avenue, across from P.F. Chang’s and next to Word of Mouth. The new location offers a larger space. “We will be able to offer a larger selection of high quality shoes, accessories, and apparel,” says Molly. “And, we’ll continue to provide shoe fit expertise, and have room to expand our popular training programs.” The new place has a separate room where training programs, events, clinics and classes will be held-a plus, when outdoor temperatures heat up, or summer rains prohibit outdoor activities.

n fight night when there’s a red carpet rolled out, Lamborghinis in the arena lot and large cats on display inside, you know you’re in Las Vegas. And that’s exactly how the promoters of the coming Friday Night Fights event, dubbed ‘Making History’, want you to feel—even if these boxing bouts happen to be at Robarts Arena in Sarasota. The main events on April 3 will feature two title fights: Local legend China “The Dragon” Smith (35-4) is set to defend his World Boxing Federation (WBF) North American heavyweight championship belt, while Aaron “Jedi” Jaco (17-3) battles for a vacant WBF super-middleweight regional title.
O
With two titles on the line in one night, the moniker ‘Making History’ is not just a marketing tagline; this fight card acts as a launchpad for bringing the sport of boxing back to Sarasota—a city that hasn’t seen a professional match since 2006, when Smith defeated Benito Fernandez by 1st round TKO. The champ hopes the evening’s grandiose display will help revitalize community interest in one of the world’s oldest sports. “My dream is to bring boxing to Sarasota, and not just one event, but for many to follow,” Smith says. “It’s a true blessing; we have me defending my title and Aaron Jaco fighting for a title in the same night. That’s why I say we are making history in Sarasota.” The Sarasota community will benefit directly from the bouts. Several Newtown charities are expected to take home money from raffles and ticket sales, including the Boys & Girls Club of Sarasota County. Additionally, the Big Cat Habitat and Trinity Without Borders will also be supported by the event, which promoters say has charity and the advancement of social welfare as one of its primary goals.

Smith was born and raised in Newtown, so for him the fight coinciding with the coming Newtown Centennial on April 17 is a cause for celebration, and being able to give money back to his community only makes this Friday Night Fights all the more special. For the southpaw, it’s a chance to show kids in Newtown that hard work and self respect can lead to real success.

action outside of the ring in other ways. In his free time, he enjoys shark fishing, comparing the danger of dragging a carnivorous fish out of the water to facing an opponent in the ring. Priding himself on being the type of person to seize the day, “Jedi” soberly contemplates what a life without the adventure of boxing would mean for his happiness. “That feeling of walking to the ring, that rush, that excitement, that adrenaline— it’s something you know can only last for a while because you’re going to get old someday, and you’re not going to be able to walk out to that ring,” he says, “and that feeling will be gone. But it’s one of those things you’ve got to chase while you can.” “One of my goals is to encourage kids from all over to live their dreams,” he says. “Dreams don’t have expiration dates, people do.”
got something up your sleeve,” Jaco says, noting the cure for aging: “You have to get a little bit smarter about the way you train and what you do in that ring.”
Jaco, too, is thrilled to fight in front of a hometown crowd, saying that everywhere he goes he can feel the support of the community around him. The “Jedi” refers to himself as a ‘businessman’ these days and no longer needs to scrap for paychecks; however, despite the

While every fight could be the one where he decides to hang his gloves up for good, Jaco stays in shape and credits his active lifestyle and clean diet for his career longevity. When he steps into Robarts arena on fight night, it’ll mark 22 years of ranked combat for him, with nearly 12 years as a professional boxer. For both China Smith and Aaron Jaco, main event status at Robarts Arena is a true homecoming, and not just because

would like to be remembered most for his business acumen and personal training, the urge to fight is in his blood and it’s hard for him to shake.
His opponent and he have yet to sign on the dotted line, but Jaco welcomes a potentially younger, bigger guy to take him on. When the bell rings on fight night, “Jedi” will be 38 years old, and candidly admits that he’s slowed down a bit. But the thought of losing a fight in front of a local crowd that’s chanting his name isn’t even an option for the super-middleweight.
“If people think they get a rush by jumping out of a plane, they should try walking out to a ring, with thousands of people cheering you on while your music is playing. Because if they think jumping out of a plane is a rush, they’ll never experience walking out to the ring in your home town to fight,” he says. “That is one of the most amazing rushes in the world; it’s absolutely unbelievable, that feeling. I still get that rush and that desire to feel that fix.”
“I just hope to show there’s a lot of fighter left inside me … (People are making) a mistake by thinking I’m totally out of this game. Because even if you are a little bit slower or not as young as you used to be, that doesn’t mean you ain’t 28 FIT941.com
Jumping from a moving plane that’s thousands of feet in the air may not thrill him, but Jaco does fill his need for
the venue is in Sarasota. For Jaco, it means headlining the same stage his dad once held when he fought at Robarts in 1991. For the champion China Smith, this arena signals ‘good luck’ after his previous victory under its roof, and reminds him of the days before he wore gold around his waist. Like Jaco, the thought of losing in front of a hometown crowd isn’t something China’s considered. Every day at the Team China gym in Bradenton, the champ is putting in hours of training, assuring that he will be ready on fight night. Though his opponent is still a mystery, Smith, 36, openly admits that, whoever it ends up being, the man is likely to be younger than he, but the age gap is not something he concerns himself with.
The heavyweight stays healthy through strength training and yoga, keeping his body active and ready for battle. He can still throw a solid punch and bob-andweave like the best of them, but “The Dragon” says his greatest weapon is his positive state of mind. “Thank God I live right. I surround myself with positive people, and I tell kids—I just believe,” he says. “I believe in god, and I believe I’m young. I feel like I’m in my mid-20s; I’m stronger and faster than ever. “
As he shadow boxes at the gym, listening carefully to the instructions of his head trainer—his dad—Smith looks smooth and agile, like a young, hungry competitor who hasn’t lost a step. Although outside of the ring he is a gentle giant, while training, the champion reacts sharply if his intense focus is broken by anyone. Mentally, he’s determined and confident that he will beat his opponent, and it doesn’t matter who the other guy is. “I am a shorter heavyweight, but I have speed and power. I’m going to use my
god given talent to my fullest ability, escalate, and take it to a whole new level. I don’t care who the other guy is,” Smith says. “Jaco and I, we train our butt off for this opportunity; we live and die by fighting. Mentally I’m feeling better and stronger than ever, because I’m fighting in my hometown. I’m defending my title in my hometown. “ Smith, who speaks highly of Jaco’s talent, says he owes all of the fighters on the card for making the night a success. Both “Dragon” and “Jedi” credit the team working with them out of the ring for making this Friday Night Fights a reality, noting the relief that comes from working with honest promoters and sponsors. After a career that has seen the worst of what boxing promotions can mean for the athletes Smith says he finally has a team around him that is full of nothing but good vibes. “We’re like family. I’m truly blessed to have this team. Without them, none of this would be possible. I’m so lucky to have them by me, with me. And when I think about it, I get emotional,” he says. “I’m truly blessed and humbled to have this fight in Sarasota.”

any call it the best experience they’ve ever had, standing on what looks like a large surfboard and paddling through the open water. The Hawaiian sport of standup paddleboarding (SUP) is growing in popularity, and we in the Sarasota area are surrounded by ocean water that makes for perfect paddling.

If you haven’t experienced SUP for yourself, there’s no time like the present to give it a try. Some look at paddleboarding as a fitness sport, and they’re not wrong. Maintaining balance works your core and legs, and paddling utilizes the muscles in your arms and back. However, it’s also an enjoyable recreational activity, one that is easily accessible for people of all ages. Just being out on the water and paddling to cool places offers pleasures and rewards that staying on land simply can’t provide. “It’s a phenomenal workout. So, it’s great for the body,” says Rob Alfieri, the owner of SUP Sarasota. “You’re out on the water, you’re out with marine life, you’re out with nature; so, it’s also very good for the soul as well—the spirit— because you’re really connecting with nature and connecting with the water.” SUP Sarasota offers what it calls ‘EcoTours’, on-water, guided tours conducted from a kayak or paddleboard. These explore the local beauty of the Little Sarasota Bay and Mangrove Islands, areas which are frequented by majestic manatees and dolphins. Paddlers will also be taken to beautiful Historic Spanish Point, a place where the oldest natives of what is now Florida once called home. “It’s total beautiful, un-spoiled, undeveloped Old Florida. It’s a tremendous way to experience what Florida used to be like,” Rob says. “We kind of give

Yet, all tours will bring paddlers to a place of natural beauty, while they enjoy a fun day on the water, experiencing the ocean in an intimate way that only an open board can provide. There’s no wrong way to use your standup paddleboard. Some people prefer battling the waves on the open water, while others enjoy finding a sense of serenity and peace that comes from exploring nature in a whole new way. Some even use their paddleboards to practice yoga, adding a new twist to their mastery of focus and balance. SURFit USA, a water sports company in Sarasota, offers SUP yoga classes to the public, which are friendly to those who have never paddled or held a pose before: “In the Lido Mangrove Tunnel area there are all these little protected bays and mangrove tunnels, which are really beautiful to paddle through. (SUP yoga participants) do a short paddle through the tunnels, they anchor their boards in a really secluded little lagoon, and then the yoga instructor leads them through about an hour long class,” says Karla Gore, the co-founder of SURFit. “You’re lying in these different poses and there are birds flying by or fish jumping in the water near you, and it’s just really nice.” In order to experience these joys for yourself, you have to find a board and go paddling. Both SUP Sarasota and SURFit offer rentals, instruction classes, and tours to keep any SUP hobbyist busy. If you’re an expert who is looking for a new way to paddleboard, Sarasota has ample opportunities. And if you’re looking to standup paddleboard for the first time, all you need to do is get a board and start exploring. You may find that life is simply more beautiful when you’re out on the water.

STRENGTH TRAINING for Endurance Athletes
re you a runner or endurance athlete? Do you train for hours throughout the week to be the best you can be at running? Are you having aches and pains that you believe are unrelated? Aches and pains are a sign that you need to work out smarter.
ance athlete due to the repetitive nature of the activity,” states Lieberman. “The result is the posterior muscles becoming over stretched and inactive, making it difficult to have proper posture and body mechanics, leaving an athlete prone to injury.”
According to Corrective Exercise Specialist, Bryan Lieberman, “Running, cycling, and endurance training are all great ways to get exercise, but they are only one part to create a healthy and strong body to perform at optimal levels. Dangers of not adding strength training to your workout program leads to imbalances in the body that present itself in the form of nagging pains or unrecognized overuse injuries.”
Injuries occur most often when dominant muscles become tight and are no longer functioning correctly and the brain recruits other muscle groups to compensate in an unnatural movement pattern. Joint damage and pain are sure to follow.
A
Lieberman, who has over 25 years of training experience and currently directs training programs for Crunch Fitness, has found that strength training for endurance athletes is vital, especially if running is the only form of exercise a person does to stay in shape. Adding a couple sessions of strength training per week can avoid causing major muscular imbalances. “There is a major part of society that suffers from postural problems due to anterior muscles being tight and dominant. This is far more exaggerated and problematic in each case of an endur32 FIT941.com
“Many people assume this is part of the natural effects of aging, and it is not,” Lieberman says.“Postural correction is the most common work done with each client daily. … Pain is often eliminated once an individual’s brain begins to activate the muscles that have stopped being recruited for movement. This applies to athletes of any age or fitness level.” It’s easy to spot a high-level marathon runner or cyclist. Often, their bodies have slouched shoulders, neck jutting forward, shortened chest muscles, shortened abdominals, and shortened hip flexors. Some or all of these imbalances apply. With all of those muscles being pulled forward from a highly repetitive activity, like running, over time the hamstrings and glutes become inactive.
This leads to what Lieberman calls “flat butt syndrome”, which reduces the ability to complete everyday tasks without putting the lower back at risk. Besides strength training, Lieberman believes that most runners would greatly benefit by stretching the anterior muscles and the strengthening of the posterior muscles of the body. “An ideal way to learn to strengthen the posterior muscles is to seek the assistance of a fitness professional to properly teach one to recruit the correct muscles,” he says. “If more anterior exercises are suggested instead of stretching those muscles, I suggest finding another professional with a better understanding of corrective exercise.” In closing, Bryan adds a cautious word of advice to people who seek professional training from an unreliable source: “Please keep in mind, there isn’t a professional strength coach on the planet that would have their athletes doing more than 12 reps to improve strength or maintain muscle,” he says. “Doing more reps doesn’t make a person lean, it destroys your muscle which is your fat burning machinery and is yet another reason why endurance training should not be your only form of exercise. Every ’body’ will benefit from some form of strength training.”

You Can Snack, Just do it Right by Clair Cameron f you’re dieting or trying to stay fit, the common wisdom is that you need to cut out the snacks. And that’s true, if you’re loading up your body with high-carb potato chips or crackers, which generally offer few nutritional benefits. However, there are ways to snack healthy without ruining your fitness venture. Further, snacking on the right foods may improve overall health, curb hunger, and help to keep your daily calorie intake down where it should be.
I
It seems strange to say that snacking may help you eat less and consume healthier foods, but it’s true. A snack in between meals will stop blood sugar from dropping rapidly, keeping you feeling full longer. This will also improve your mood, since stable blood sugar helps to avoid “hangry” outbursts. If you’re eating small meals 34 FIT941.com
and keeping yourself feeling fed, when it comes time to eat your body is going to crave less. Our bodies become hungry when their blood sugar plummets after meals, and we indulge on junk food in order to feel full again. Eating more often may help you eat right. Eating more often and having tiny meals or snacks throughout the day, as opposed to eating large meals, also keeps your metabolism working. When your metabolism is running, it constantly burns energy and body fat. When you aren’t eating enough, your metabolism slows to conserve energy while your body sends out signals that tell you it’s time to eat, making you feel tired and lethargic. Snacking curbs this by telling your body you’re well fed and have all the energy you need.
Before you reach for the M&Ms, let’s make sure you’re snacking right. On the following page we have healthy snack recipes that you can try. However, things like nuts and seeds make great mid-day snacks, with a balance of good fats and protein. Nuts and seeds also contain the complex carbohydrates the body needs to balance blood sugar and keep you feeling fed. Further, nuts and seeds are packed with micronutrients, meaning the calories you consume are providing real nourishment for your body, as opposed to empty fuel. Consider adding a healthy snack to your daily routine. As with any fitness and health journey, eating is never the problem. It’s knowing when and what to eat that keeps all diets on the right track. Don’t be afraid to snack, just make sure you snack right.

Skin Care & Fitness ealth, fitness and well being are essential. A regular regimen of proper exercise combined with a balanced diet of fresh, nutritious foods and plenty of water each day can ensure an enhanced quality of life and longevity. Eating well, staying hydrated, and getting enough exercise can also ensure more radiant and younger-looking skin. Most of us may think of our skin care regimen as different from our personal health and fitness program, however, they are vital and intimately connected.
H
Physical Fitness is Good Skin Therapy No, you don’t put on jogging shoes or slip into yoga pants each day in order to exfoliate your skin or dab moisturizer around your eyes. But, when you go to the gym, for a run around the park, or to yoga or spinning class, you are actually creating physical impact that affects your skin. How does that work, exactly? Skin is the largest organ in the human body. After all, skin covers large areas, regulates body temperature and releases toxins. “Exercise increases blood flow, which carries oxygen and vital nutrients to your skin cells, optimizing cell function,” says Dr. Emily Arsenault, with Arsenault Dermatology in Sarasota. Exercise helps to cleanse free radicals and other wastes, and gives your cheeks that
rosy glow. Additionally, regular exercise has proven to decrease stress. Stress triggers many ailments, including skin diseases such as, psoriasis or eczema. Exercise decreases the severity of these stress-induced skin diseases. Working Out Can Also Damage Your Skin Riding your bike at top speed can certainly get you 'in the zone' where you feel that lactic acid burn, and know that your body is using up its available supply of oxygen. During strenuous exercise, your sweat carries toxins, moisture, and electrolytes out of the body. This can result in overall dehydration. Think of this process happening with skin cells, draining the moisture and causing a taut, drawn, emaciated look. Those salts in your perspiration can also etch away at your skin. Dr. Arsenault says, “Friction and excessive sweating can lead to chaffing, causing an irritation dermatitis.” Do you jog or swim, and spend lots of time outdoors? Chronic sun exposure from UV rays could cause cell DNA mutation, prematurely weathering your skin with age spots, wrinkles and increasing risk of skin cancer. Frequent sunburns significantly increase that risk. Add a Dermatologist to Your Fitness Team So, what should you do to get the most benefit from exercise and fitness without compromising your appearance? How do you avoid threats that may harm your skin and overall health? Just as you should consult your physician before embarking
on any fitness program, talk to your dermatologist. Drink plenty of fluids to keep skin cells hydrated and appearing plump, dewy and healthy. Dr. Arsenault suggests: • Avoid exercise in peak sun exposure hours, between 10 AM and 4 PM. • Wear a sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher with frequent reapplication (at least every two hours). • Use sunscreens that include zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These provide a physical barrier that reflect the harmful rays of the sun, and are less irritating to the eyes. • Wear loose, moisture-wicking fabrics to pull sweat away from the skin. • Wear tightly-woven, UV-blocking fabrics for sun protection. • Apply barrier balms to areas of the skin that frequently chaff, to prevent irritation. • Shower soon after exercise to prevent fungus and bacte rial infections. Now you can relax and enjoy your fitness regimen, knowing that you will look your best over the long run and have even healthier, younger skin.
Dr. Emily Arsenault is a graduate of the University of Miami School of medicine and a board certified Dermatologist in Sarasota and Lakewood Ranch. She has been voted “Best Dermatologist” for the past six years in the Bradenton Herald’s People’s Choice awards. For more information on Dr. Arsenault visit ArsenaultDermatology.com.

HCG Not Just a Fad by Nathan Freyburger he HCG diet is a fad that just won’t die, with its early roots in the 1950s work of British endocrinologist Dr. Albert T. W. Simeons, who suggested the use of the hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) in conjunction with a calorie restricted diet as a means to lose weight and combat obesity. He outlines the details of his proposal in his book Pounds & Inches, A New Approach to Obesity, which was first published in 1954.
T
The hormone HCG is produced naturally when a woman is pregnant. It aids in the growth of a healthy placenta and with fetal development throughout the duration of the pregnancy. HCG also contributes to the production of healthy nails and skin, increases fertility, and naturally suppresses appetite, giving the hormone a variety of uses as a fertility treatment and a means to stimulate weight loss. In the late 1960s, the HCG Diet had all but vanished, but over the last decade it has a made a major resurgence, with
38 FIT941.com
over-the-counter supplements and prescription products marketing themselves as a safe, effective way to lose a lot of weight very quickly. While success varies from person to person, the fact remains that the use of HCG to cut unwanted fat has stood the test of time and has been used safely by thousands of people. Further, the science surrounding HCG is starting to become clearer, and the associated diet has been systemized to maximize safety and effectiveness. “It’s one of our most popular diets,” says Jenny Wilkins, the co-owner and Chief Clinical Researcher at AgeVital Pharmacy. “People are actually calling it the ‘miracle hormone’ because it actually helps people to lose weight.” There is no question that an HCG weight loss system gets results, as long as consumers are smart about the way they use it. The hormone has not been approved by the FDA for weight loss, and many of the products containing HCG have been banned, most notably the homeopathic HCG drops. However, injecting HCG into the body is com-
pletely legal with a prescription from a doctor as part of a set program. “It is required that you get a prescription from a licensed physician,” Jenny says. “AgeVital works with doctors all over the country … Ninety-nine percent of the doctors [we work with] are for the diet; they don’t know the biochemistry of it, but that’s where the pharmacy comes in. We actually educate them.” You should talk with a physician before you start HCG to assure you are healthy while shedding those unwanted pounds. As with any diet that restricts calories to a minimal amount, there are some risks associated with the use of the hormone. However, many people lose extreme amounts of weight with no noticeable side effects for the duration of the diet program, which has four phases and takes about 23 days to complete. Jenny says she has seen the diet change the lives of people who are severely overweight. “In general, people will lose 20-60 lbs in a 23 day cycle of visceral fat,” she says. “You don’t go hungry from it because your body is eating off of your
Meta -28™ 30 servings per jar
reserves … It is the best product for people that are severely overweight.” Visceral fat is the intestinal fat that the body stores up to use only in emergency situations. When you work out, your normal fat reserves are what the body typically burns for fuel. HCG tells your metabolism to use the visceral fat first, resulting in the immediate loss of the most stubborn fat in the body—fat which is attributed to heart disease, sleep apnea, and hypertension. While the HCG diet is reasonably safe, you should make sure you only use it as part of a monitored diet system. In order for the hormone to be used effectively, it requires you follow all instructions to assure that your body uses visceral fat for energy as opposed to your normal fat stores or muscle. If you follow the appropriate guidelines and acquire HCG legally from a licensed source, it may just be the ‘miracle’ you’ve been looking for to lose those extra pounds.

GAIT ANALYSIS:
The Key to Athletic Shoe Selection by Suzi Harkola
erformance on the track or trail is far more than simply walking into a shoe retailer and selecting a style. How you run – your gait – is as important as where you run, and the pros at the area’s most notable shoe establishments and training venues are experts in analyzing gait for best performance and minimal injury, for each type of runner.
P
In a gait analysis, you can expect to be asked questions about your running or walking distances and frequencies, your training goals, the surface you run on most often, your regular mileage and any injury history. You may want to bring in your old shoes, which can help the fitter in the selection process. The goal, of course, is to increase your speed and stamina. This all comes down to the gait cycle, determined by observing the biomechanics of the foot in motion. Kimmi Van Der Veer, store manager for Fit2Run on Main Street in downtown Sarasota, notes that gait analysis demonstrates how a runner’s individual body mechanics operate.
The goal, of course, is to increase your speed and stamina. This all comes down to the gait cycle, determined by observing the biomechanics of the foot in motion.
40 FIT941.com
“At Fit2Run, our process starts with a measurement of both feet and a scan on our iStep machine,” she explains. “The iStep tells us about the arch-type of our guest, whether they have a high, low or medium arch. This helps us to determine if an orthotic is ideal for the guest and also gives us an opportunity to discuss injuries and injury prevention. We then move to the treadmill for a video-taped running or walking session of the guest in motion. Our goal is to replicate their usual running or walking conditions as much as possible. Afterwards, our trained associates analyze the slow motion recording using zFlo Gait Analysis to determine how much pronation
that individual has; for example, do their ankles roll inward, called overpronation, outward, called supination or are they a neutral runner with minimal pronation.” Michael Briggert at Studio South in Sarasota has worked with runners for over two decades. When fitting a running or walking shoe, he looks at the repeated movements of the runner while running forward on a treadmill. Is the arch dropped, are the sides even, is the distance between heel strike consistent? “In my gait analyses, I look for an equal knee lift, any tilt to the hips, unequal stride,” he says. “I want to see a nice, repeatable cadence. I’ll watch the movement from behind, then offer a tool box of drills and exercises to help them overcome any imbalances or weaknesses. The goal is, of course, to increase performance, but the overall goal is to reduce injury.” David Jackson, owner of New Balance Sarasota and New Balance University Park and Fleet Feet Sports Sarasota, says “When someone comes into the store, they are greeted warmly, given a cold bottle of water, and then we listen. Next is a gait analysis and spend as much time as necessary with that customer. Appropriate footwear is recommended and the customer leaves happy. Making our guests happy with my continued fit expertise as a pedorthist is the key to my continued involvement with New Balance.” He notes that wearing a shoe during the analysis will alter the gait. He advises against an over-supported shoe, and notes that his staff does not use treadmills in analyzing gait. “We want to see our customers walking barefoot, then we scan the arch, width, marginal, range of motion and biomechanics to determine the best choices,” he says. True gait analysis is not a generic exercise, but is a scientifically-based and technically-precise process. It is highly individualized, and reveals a lot about how you will hold up to training, performance and injury prevention.

Tumbling & Cheers to Encourage
by Chad Michael Van Alstin f you are reading this magazine, you’re at least interested in living a healthy lifestyle, and you probably would like your kids to be on board, too. If you want to instill good habits like fitness, the best time to start is when they’re young. Sports are a great place to look, and some sports, like tumbling and cheerleading, can be started as early as 3 years of age; though the benefits these light gymnastics provide could last a lifetime.
I
Tumbling is something kids do naturally as they begin to develop their motor skills. It’s good to encourage the activity, since practice leads to firmer muscles, improved balance and coordination, and increased flexibility, all of which are vital for the development of a strong body. Moving their tumbling to a profes42 FIT941.com
a Healthy Life
sional setting allows a trainer to encourage proper movement, maximizing these benefits.
that follows them through their athletic life, regardless of what sport they participate in during the future.
“I always talk about the health benefits first … that stays with you forever. Being healthy and having to stay fit will help you all your life,” says Dustin Edwards, the owner of Funtastics Cheerleading & Tumbling in Sarasota. “Growing up in sports creates healthy adults because you’re building good repetition of diet, exercise, and stretching.”
Partaking in tumbling and cheerleading will also help build social skills, since children work with others their own age in a cooperative, team-based environment. Going to a gym to tumble gets kids out of the house and interacting with a diverse group of people, building friendships and a system of support and motivation. Kids will feel strong and independent while also learning to listen, respect others, and work as a team.
Dustin says that cheerleading and tumbling are uniquely beneficial because they are sports that utilize only the body, as opposed to a ball or a bat. Those who participate develop a deeper sense of body awareness and increased flexibility
Jamie Griffitts, the owner of Acrofit Gymnastics in Sarasota, says that competitive tumbling helps kids focus on long-term goals and is good for their self-esteem.
“The number one thing it does is build their self confidence,” she says. “Because they were physically able to do something they could never do before, they start smiling and gleaming – the most timid kids. … It’s the strong, cool kids who can go across the monkey bars.” The number one fear parents have about signing their son/daughter up for any sport is injuries. Jamie says those fears are misguided, and that learning to tumble properly may even help protect toddlers from household falls. If you have any reservations about letting your child tumble or cheer, talking to a trainer may help put those fears to rest.

“They’re doing a handstand and a cartwheel, they’re not falling off of anything,” Jamie says. “We have so much equipment now to safely hold the bodyweight of the students that they don’t even have to rely on the instructor being able to hold the child’s bodyweight when they’re upside down. We have pieces of equipment that can do that now.” With any physical activity there are risks for injury, but don’t let an overprotective attitude keep your child from becoming active in sports. The youngest years of life are the best time to start developing future skills and instilling good habits. It’s a time to try new things that stimulate the body and mind, and there’s no better way than youth gymnastics and tumbling, since kids can start at such a young age. The benefits of adopting an active lifestyle early are numerous and extend beyond exercise and weight management. If your child maintains their healthy lifestyle into adulthood, they may just thank you for making it fun early in life.

RUNNING TIPS
faster! If you know that someone is by Whitney Bartlett depending on you and striving for a similar goal, it will motivate you.
as opposed to something that they will give up in a few weeks. Here a few of the tips that I have found to be tried and true. 1. Set Specific and manageable goals - Start slowly and work your way safely to your goal distance or pace. For example, plan to exercise for 20 minutes, three times a week for the first month. If you start out too hard too quickly, you will increase the risk of injury and burnout which will cause you to get discouraged and give up.
any people come into the store and ask me how to get started with a running or walking routine. I first ask them, “What is your goal?” Are you doing this to lose weight or jumpstart a healthier lifestyle? Are you trying to challenge yourself and complete a certain goal race or do you just want to get out there for a set amount of time? Knowing their motivation behind starting a new fitness routine not only helps me understand the best way to help them, but gives them an opportunity to focus on why they want to do this.
M
Once we establish their goal, I like to give them a few tips on how to be successful with this new routine and have it become a lifelong commitment 44 FIT941.com
2. Schedule your workouts - In today’s fast paced world, a great way to remind yourself to get your workout in is to schedule them on your calendar or smartphone. If you don’t, they can be quickly thrown to the way side when an unexpected work or family issue arises. 3. Invest in a good pair of shoes - When you are running or walking, everything starts with your feet. If you do not have the proper gear on those feet, they will hurt and you will not want to use them. Go to a specialty running store and have a FIT specialist fit your properly. They have been trained to watch you walk and analyze your gait and understand the technology in the shoes. 4. Find an accountability partner - This has been the biggest motivator for me personally. Running with people is more fun and makes the time go by
5. Make sure a proper warm up, cool down and stretching is part of your routine -The warm-up is aimed at reducing muscle stiffness in order to decrease the chance of injury. Five to 10 minutes of walking will increase body temperature, oxygen utilization and blood flow to your muscles. When done with your run, try to resist the urge of stopping without a cool down. A proper cool down will help dissipate waste produces (such as lactic acid) from your body which should help reduce muscle soreness. A good cool down should consist of the following: • 5 to 10 minutes of walking – to decrease body temperature and remove waste products from the working muscles • 5 to 10 minutes of static stretching exercises - to decrease body temperature, remove waste products from the working muscles to increase range of movement Static stretches are important to the cool down, as they help muscles to relax and increase their range of movement. In my opinion, setting yourself up for success is the most important thing you can do when starting a running or walking routine. Once you get that established, the rest will come. For more tips please do not hesitate to contact me at training@fleetfeetsarasota. com, I would LOVE to help you!
