fter Dean Burnside’s keynote speech about business and ministry at a Christian business leaders conference in Nashville, his son told him ‘you’re teaching other business leaders to use their business as a ministry…you’re multiplying your more!’ Dean was moved to tears by his son’s message. Dean says God allowed him to be successful with his business, Good News Pest Solutions, and minister to his community but also to help regional business owners mentor their own employees. Dean says his business is God’s instrument to reach people. “Good News Pest Solutions is dedicated to bringing members of the community and the world who may not already know Jesus into His salvation.” Founded as Macy’s Termite & Pest Control in 1989 by John Macy, Dean came on board seven years later as partner. The two had made a thoughtful and conscious decision to “honor God” in the way they ran the business. Dean says he and John developed their company mission statement after attending Fellowship of Companies for Christ International conferences. They had a five-year business plan but within three years, John decided to retire. Dean bought
John’s 50 percent of the company and became sole owner. Dean jokes that he came on board as a salesman and ending up “owning the joint.” Continuing the vision he and John believed in, Dean believes deeply that the success of Good News Pest Solutions is a direct result of its mission to “represent Jesus Christ by providing peace-of-mind through green pest control with customer service excellence at a fair price. The company follows biblical principles of compassion, integrity and honesty,” Dean says. Dean has grown Good News Pest Solutions into one of Southwest Florida’s most successful pest control companies, in part because of his commitment to using the most environmentally responsible pesticides and products available. Good News Pest Solutions is a member of the Green Business Partnership. Being successful has been important because, as Dean says, the company is much more than a business–it’s a full- time ministry. He was raised in a family whose roots are steeped in worship. Dean’s great-grandfather was a church ‘planter’ in

upstate New York and his grandfather was a worship leader in Ohio. His grandparents relocated to Florida and Dean’s father took over the music ministry at their church. His mother played piano and Dean and his brother sang. The platform he was familiar with growing up in a music ministry included a microphone. Dean has traded that church musician’s platform for a figurative one: his company.
Dean says it was a miraculous revelation from God that he could use the business as a platform for ministry. He explains that before his role as sole owner of Good News Pest Solutions, he was very involved in his church as a part time lay worship leader. As the church was looking for a full-time pastor, some suggested Dean should consider a permanent ministry. At a weekend retreat, Dean says, he reflected. “I got alone with God to find out His will for my professional life,” he says, and there received his answer; ‘You’ll reach more through your business than you ever will singing in a microphone…’ Dean understood and decided that Good News Pest Solutions would be a full-time, for-profit platform for ministry. But he also recognized that he’d need business counsel and mentorship and partnered with C12, a Greensboro, North Carolina-based Christian business leadership group “grounded in timeless Biblical wisdom.” C12’s mission is to “change the world by advancing the Kingdom of God in the marketplace through the companies and lives of those Christ calls to lead businesses for Him.” As Dean explains it, he began as a “salesman,” and while he was skilled in building customer relationships, running a business was new. He says he joined C12 to both receive mentoring and direction
to better understand how “God would use me” to minister to more people. After 17plus years in C12, he says that partnership has impacted him greatly as a businessman, husband and father, “shaping the man and leader I’ve become.” Good News Pest Solutions’ mission is to share God’s Good News while solving pest problems with environmentally-friendly solutions. Dean says the company’s mission is overtly Christian and the company name matches the mission. “Our business has grown because many people would prefer to do business with a company that follows Biblical principles,” Dean says adding that Good News Pest Solutions has had an “eternal impact.” He says employees have ministry pamphlets, offer prayer and share the Gospel with customers when appropriate, adding that they’ve witnessed many people “come to Christ.” Many people will not darken the door of a church or attend a Christian concert, but they have bugs,” he says. “And that often opens a door to engaging in a spiritual level conversation, especially if they are going through a difficult life experience. We listen carefully for those opportunities and offer positive encouragement.” “We’ve reached so many more people through the company than I ever would have while singing into a microphone on a church platform. Good News Pest Solutions is our platform and God is keeping his promise to me,” Dean says. “God had a specific plan for me,” Dean says. “When you are willing, God will multiply your more.”

Have You Heard the Good News? In 2006, Good News became the leader in green pest management in Florida. More Good News: we can solve all of your pest problems with reduced–risk, green solutions to protect your environment. Children, pets, anyone with allergies and expectant mothers are all safe using our eco-superior methods. But, the Good News doesn’t stop there. We have news that is much better than protection from pests.
MY “GOOD
I
was born into a Christian family where I watched three generations lead the musical worship at church by singing into a microphone on the platform. At an early age, I chose to accept the forgiveness offered by Jesus Christ and follow Him, and I made good life choices accordingly. However, in my late teens, I intentionally put God on a shelf, with a promise to return after I had experienced many of the things I was told to never do. During my senior year in college, two events caused me to reevaluate my life and my decision to shelve God. First, the girl I hoped to marry broke up with me because she saw no future for her with a man who was not living what he said he believed. Second, I was at fault in a head-on collision that totaled both vehicles and could have ended my life. During my recovery, as I was reading the Bible, God reminded me in James 4:14 8
NEWS” STORY
that it is presumptuous of me to put Him on a shelf, because I don’t even know where I’ll be tomorrow. The realization that I had been given a second chance at life drove me to my knees in repentance to receive God’s forgiveness. As promised in His Word, He forgave me and I returned to following Him with a fresh start. I’ve never gotten over it or looked back – Good News indeed!
Terri and I married in 1982 and have two sons, Adam and Kyle. I began my career in pest control in 1990 and became a partner with John Macy in 1996. John retired in 1998 and I became the sole owner of Good News Pest Solutions. At that same time, I was leading worship at our church as a volunteer with many people encouraging me to do so full time. A close friend and mentor challenged me to operate the business as a “platform for ministry.” I had a vivid mental image of doing ministry from
a church platform, but had no idea how to translate that to my business. I couldn’t get the idea out of my mind and began to explore what ministry through business might look like.
During a time of prayer and asking God for direction, He revealed to me that I would reach more people with the Good News of His love and forgiveness through the business than I ever would by singing in a microphone on a platform. This thought inspires me every morning. While serving our customers, we often get the chance to share the Good News of God’s love and grace as described in Acts 20:24. Doing so fulfills our purpose and eternal mission. Through Good News Pest Solutions, I work to fulfill God’s invitation to spend my life for a purpose that has eternal significance, sharing His Good News!

Read on and I hope that you too will be forever changed by it!
WHAT IS HIS GOOD STEP 1 God loves you and wants you to experience peace and life– abundant and eternal. The Bible Says... “We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” - Romans 5:1 “For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” - John 3:16 “I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” – Jesus - John 10:10
STEP 2 God created us in His own image to have abundant life. He did not make us as robots to automatically love and obey Him. God gave us a will and freedom of choice. We chose to disobey God and go our own willful way. We still make this choice today, resulting in separation from God. The Bible Says... “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” - Romans 3:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life In Christ Jesus our Lord.” - Romans 6:23
STEP 3 Jesus Christ died on the cross and then rose from the grave. He paid the penalty for our sin to bridge the gap between God and people. The Bible Says... “For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” - 1 Timothy 2:5
NEWS?
“For Christ died for sins once and for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God.” - 1 Peter 3:18 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” - Romans 5:8
STEP 4 We must trust Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and receive Him by personal invitation. The Bible Says... “Yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God.” - John 1:12 “That if you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” - Romans 10:9
HERE IS HOW YOU CAN RECEIVE CHRIST: 1. Admit your need (I am a sinner). 2. Be willing to turn from your sins (repent). 3. Believe that Jesus Christ died for you on the cross and rose from the grave. 4. Through prayer, invite Jesus Christ to come in and control your life through the Holy Spirit. (receive Him as Lord and Savior).
IT’S JUST THAT SIMPLE. “Repent and believe the Good News!” - Mark 1:15 For a free Bible and follow-up information, please email us at Office@GoodNewsPest.com or call 941-412-9610.

s boys, Sarasota natives Ryan and Rick Krizen dreamed of racing boats.
“We’ve always had boats. We’ve always been on the water. But to race a boat, that was always a dream for me. One of those dreams you don’t share because you just think you’ll never get there,” says Ryan. “Years ago, my mother worked at the (Lido Beach) Hyatt which used to be the wet pit for the races and she kind of knew a lot of the racers. When we got older, she’d take us to the races. I’d say, ‘I want to race boats.’ My mom said, ‘You have to be rich to do that.’ That kind of stuck in my head,” says Ryan. For decades Ryan held fast to the dream. Then, one day a couple of years ago, he acted. Ryan contacted a Sarasota-based boat racing team and asked how he might get started in the race game.
“They said either you intern for a race team and hope they give you the chance or go buy your own boat,” Ryan recalls. “So I got the money up and bought my own race boat.” Ryan told his brother Rick, now a marine mechanic, about the purchase and asked if he wanted to race as a team. “There was no hesitation. He said yes immediately.” Ryan’s 29-foot Warlock race boat ‘Knot Krazy,’ piloted by him as wheel man and Rick as throttle man, won the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix Festival Pro-Am 2 division in 2015. The brothers raced the craft upwards of 85 miles an hour on the course off Lido Beach. “It’s the Daytona 500 of boat racing,” Ryan explains. “My dream came true and to win for my hometown and for our company, WOW. I can’t describe how good it felt to win.”
12 GOOD NEWS PEST SOLUTIONS I GOODNEWSPESTSOLUTIONS.COM
The achievement was the third-ever race for Ryan and Rick. But they didn’t do it alone. Dean Burnside, president and owner of Good News Pest Solutions, was at first a bit hesitant about race boat-sponsorship. Ryan is the service manager at the company founded by his grandfather, John Macy. “When I approached Dean for a sponsorship for the first Sarasota race, as the company service manager, I was hoping this would be a benefit in both ways: be able to race and at the same time, promote this business and what it stands for,” Ryan says. “By 2015, he was definitely into what I was doing and the marketing opportunity a race boat brings.” Dean explains how he came to sponsor the boat on behalf of the company. Just weeks before the July 2015 race, Dean says, “The guys had still not found a primary sponsor for their boat, and time was running short. Ryan came to me again and asked me to
“It’s the Daytona 500 of boat racing. My dream came true and to win for my hometown and for our company, WOW. I can’t even describe how good it felt to win.” – Ryan Krizen reconsider, with a larger donation that would put the company name and logo on the side of the boat. ‘You’ll get a huge marketing bang for your buck,’ he assured me. While skeptical, I still wanted to help the brothers.” It certainly helped that Ryan and Rick are the grandsons of company founder John Macy, who is an active member of the Good News Pest Solutions team. So, Dean agreed to fully sponsor the boat. And as he said in 2015, “It turned out that Ryan was not only right on his prediction of media attention, the experience surpassed all of my expectations.” More than 30,000 people saw the boat both on race day in the water and in the parade that’s part of the race festivities. “Because of their win, at the biggest offshore race in the country, it’s not just we’re
sponsoring a boat, but we’re sponsoring the winning boat. We’re not just in the game; we’re winners in the game.” Now, going forward, not only does Good News Pest Solutions sponsor the boat, but the new motto it inspired, Good News Travels Fast, will be a signature for the company. Ryan believes the phrase, Good News Travels Fast, is not just a great fit for the boat, but “It’s really catchy and promotes our business.” “But more importantly, it’s a great spiritual message,” Ryan says. The Good News Travels Fast motto will be featured on all 30 company vehicles and on all its TV, digital and print advertising. A true win-win.

n a world focused on ‘selfies,’ Good News Pest Solutions is focused on selflessness.
“At Good News, we believe in giving. Sadly, in this generation where there’s so much focus on oneself, we’re committed to Biblical teachings that tell us to focus on the interests of others, especially those in need,” says owner Dean Burnside. “Our mission at Good News is to live God’s Word through action. We support and work alongside ministries that are committed to giving back and displaying acts of generosity, caring and selflessness. All Faiths Food Bank and Agape Flights perform acts of selflessness and giving every day with their inspirational good works,” says Dean. “We are humbled by their faith, caring and devotion and we hope you’ll support them as we have.”
All Faiths Food Bank
‘For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in …’ (Matthew 25:35) It’s truly a paradise for many, but stunningly beautiful Sarasota isn’t heaven for hungry children. And in DeSoto County, Arcadia, which means ‘heaven on earth,’ is hardly that for working families that are perhaps just one financial crisis away from crushing poverty and hunger. According to the startling statistics revealed at the 2015 Hunger Summit, “50 percent of children in Sarasota County and nearly 90 percent of the children in DeSoto are either going hungry or face a high risk of hunger on any given day.”
All Faiths Food Bank is dedicated to helping end hunger in our communities. More than 51,000 hungry people in Sarasota and DeSoto counties each year are fed through the efforts of the All Faiths Food Bank. Indeed, nearly 8 million pounds of food, enough for 6.5 million meals, pass through its 20,000-square foot warehouse annually, on its way to families in need. First, All Faiths Food Bank secures food donations from food and grocery industries, government agencies, food drives, local growers, individuals and other organizations. Next, All Faiths Food Bank picks up the donated food and then inspects, sorts, and stores it safely. It then distributes donated food where it is needed most through more than 180 Sarasota and DeSoto county agencies, programs and mobile pantries. People in need at food pantries, soup kitchens, schools, veterans’ programs, youth organizations, senior centers, and emergency shelters receive the donated food. The All Faiths Food Bank has expertise on hunger and nutrition education and as the “hub of the hunger relief system,” sees feeding the hungry as the “first step in a holistic response to meeting the needs of our hungry neighbors and helping them move toward independence.” For information, or to volunteer or donate, visit AllFaithsFoodBank.org or call 941-379-6333.
Agape Flights
‘For the ministry of this service is not only supplying the needs of the saints, but is also overflowing in many acts of thanksgiving to God.’ (2 Corinthians 9:12)
Agápe is a Greek word for love. And love is the fuel that powers Agape Flights of Venice, Florida through the heavens to bring cargo, mail and humanitarian aid to “saints.” Agape Flights is a nonprofit, Christian aviation ministry whose vision is to see a world where missionaries never lack resources to share the unconditional love of Christ and whose mission is to deliver supplies to missionary partners serving Christ and carrying hope to the nations of the Caribbean, including primarily Haiti, the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas. Founded more than 35 years ago by Clare and Keith Starkey, Agape Flights’ inaugural mission took off in November of 1980 bound for Cap Haitien, Haiti carrying supplies for one missionary family there. Over the decades, Agape has delivered aid to hundreds of missionary families sharing the love of Christ through assistance with agriculture, clean water, education, home and church construction, medical and dental care, orphan care, prison ministry, vocational training, evangelism and discipleship. In January of 2010, just 36 hours after a devastating earthquake struck Port au Prince, Haiti, Agape was in the air with food, water, and medical supplies. In the months following the calamitous quake, hope flew in almost daily: Agape flew 150 relief missions to Haiti, delivered more than 500,000 pounds of donated emergency and medical supplies, transported medical teams, evacuated Haitian children to their adoptive parents waiting in the U.S., and flew missionary families to safety. Now, Agape Flights serves nearly 400 missionaries, their families, and missions throughout the Caribbean. And soon, Agape will fly to Cuba. Agape CEO Allen Speer, who has 26 years of ministry experience in Cuba, says if it’s financially feasible, Agape will fly into Cuba two or three times in 2016, with the first flight in early summer slated to deliver 3 solarpowered water purification units. Speer says there may be a flight per month in 2017: “As God leads, we will follow.” For information, or to volunteer or donate, visit Agape Flights.com or call 941-488-0990.

You get all this, household pest prevention AND subterranean termite protection, with a $1 million damage repair warranty, for only $199 initial service and $47 per month.* That’s right, we’re assuring your
Subterranean termites do $5 billion in damage to structures every year, more than floods and fires combined. though Florida is the #1 state due to our ideal environmental conditions, only about 30% of homes enjoy the peace of mind of having a termite warranty. Homeowners’ insurance policies do NOT cover termite damage, so a warranty from a licensed pest control operator is the only way to obtain proper protection. But why don’t more home owners insure against this major risk? Because most people believe that the cost of treatment is too high, usually $1000 or more, to transfer the risk to the pest company. Good News is now providing Term-Assure 365™, the most affordable way to have peace of mind protection ever offered. We are bundling protection against subterranean termites AND household pests for one low monthly cost after a minimal initial set up. Here’s how it works: First, we perform a thorough inspection of your home to be sure it qualifies for this amazing offer. If your home is built on a slab with no wood to ground contact or obvious moisture conditions and has no visible evidence of subterranean termites (like mud tunnels, damaged wood, or reproductive swarmers), you qualify! Second, we perform our Go Green plus 3 interior and exterior pest control service
In addition to treating to prevent or eliminate household pests, your tech will also check the termite monitoring stations for termite activity while there. If live subterranean termites are detected in any of the monitors, your tech will let you know and schedule a complete perimeter termite treatment of your home with Altriset, the most effective, yet environmentally-friendly, termiticide ever invented. After your home is treated with Altriset, your pest tech will continue to monitor the stations during each tri-annual maintenance service visit. In addition, our warranty renewal inspector will perform a thorough interior and exterior inspection once per year to be sure there are no termites or damage. Speaking of damage, that’s where TermAssure 365™ kicks it up a notch! From day 1, as long as there is no evidence of existing termite activity or previous termite damage, Good News will issue a certificate for a $1 million damage repair warranty. You certainly can’t get that from any other insurer. That means that Good News will not only treat your entire home for termites if found, but we will also pay for the repair of any damage they produced, after a small
peace of mind for less than half of what other companies may offer. And you can renew your protection every year – as long as you continue paying your monthly premium and allowing us to monitor and treat tri-annually. (* up to 300 linear feet and pre-qualified, monthly credit/debit card or EFT only.) Are you already enjoying our Go Green plus 3 industry leading pest prevention service? Would you like to add TermAssure 365™ to assure your peace of mind with $1 million termite damage repair warranty? We’ve made it very easy! To reward your customer loyalty, we will waive the additional initial $199 set up fee for the termite monitoring stations. Simply tell your pest service tech that you want the Term-Assure 365™ plan, pay the normal amount for your tri-annual pest service, he or she will inspect and install the termite monitors, and set up your $47 per month credit card payments to begin the following month. Then, you sleep comfortably every night knowing you don’t have to worry about pests or termites ever again – Good News has you covered! ood News Pest Solutions made a landmark decision in 2006 to “go green,” eliminating traditional chemical products and substituting natural active ingredients for eradication of household pests. Company President Dean Burnside acknowledges that this was a daring move, but one that was preceded by careful research, study and hands-on testing. “We could see that the mood of the country was headed toward ecofriendly products,” he explains. “Major cities, including New York City, and some entire states were seriously considering banning all pesticides.”
Burnside continues, “We are not just ecofriendly, we are eco-superior. There is a heightened hunger in both the ‘green’ community and the nation at large for products that work better without poisoning our ground, our water, our air, our pets or ourselves. It’s been successful: Our client totals have increased to over 9,000, satisfaction remains extremely high, and Good News is considered a national model for eco-friendly pest control – that’s good news indeed.” Our Go Green plus 3 pest control service is designed to eliminate and prevent ants, roaches, silverfish, spiders, and occasional crawling insect invaders. We schedule 3 visits per year to provide exterior service after the initial set up. while sweeping cobwebs from the eaves and windows. Once the source of insects is determined, a proper treatment of the perimeter foundation, entry points, eaves, plant beds and trees will be applied where needed using reduced–risk, green products. If you are having any pest issues inside, your trained tech will also treat any entry points, kitchen, baths, laundry room, or problem areas using reduced– risk or even pesticide exempt products. We guarantee your satisfaction and will return (at no charge) in between scheduled visits if you encounter any pests. Please call as soon as you see a problem. The sooner we inspect and treat, the better.
To dispel some common myths about eco–friendly pesticides, Burnside answers a few questions frequently posed by consumers. Q: What is the biggest difference between eco–friendly and

ingredient. In the past, pesticides were developed to target the nervous systems of pests. Unfortunately, those same poisons affected animals and people, putting pets and homeowners at potential risk. Now, the target is muscle groups, for example the mandibles of termites. There’s an active ingredient in these new reduced–risk products that is only activated by an enzyme within an insect that people and other mammals don’t have. Good News only uses those products whenever possible.
Q: Is treatment with eco–friendly products more expensive than with traditional ones?
A: Not with Good News, and not at this time. Several years
ago, when these products were introduced, there was a large investment in research and development. We were early adopters in this area, so our costs were high. Now it’s very comparable.
Q: Do eco–friendly applications need to be more frequent
non-scheduled callbacks.
A: Absolutely not! That’s where our “eco-superior” concept
comes into play. We provide products that work better than what people anticipate. One example is a Syngenta product that we use extensively for subterranean termites called Altriset. We have been very pleased with this product and I’ve been honored to share our experiences nationwide with other pest control operators on behalf of Syngenta. Good News’ mission statement says it all: “Our purpose is to represent Jesus Christ to the Gulf Coast by providing peace of mind at a fair price, protecting our environment as the leader in green pest management, and serving others with excellence in all we do.” For more information on any of the products, services and programs of Good News, call 941-412-9610 or visit GoodNewsPestSolutions.com.

Aubrey and Anna House were looking for a pest control company they could trust, people that shared their values of service and treating people right. “We have been customers of Good News for about 10 years now. We like the quality of people they send out here. Solid people you can count on who live by Christian principles.” Because of Anna’s allergies, the couple must be very careful what pesticides are used. “We’re especially appreciative of the green treatment because it’s safer and it works.”

TERMITES
THE JAWS OF DESTRUCTION Axel and Helene Zimmermann first hired Good News Pest Solutions in 2011 to do a termite inspection on their new home. “They did a great job, so we kept them for general pest control. Their service has been very good, so now I use them for both my home and my office. When we moved into a new office complex, I noticed some possible rodent activity. Good News came right out and took care of it. We’ve had no issues since.” More important to the Zimmermanns, though, is their family’s safety. “We have small children at home, so it is important that anything used to treat pests in or around our home is effective, but also very safe. We appreciate that Good News uses the best, safest products, so we don’t have to worry about it.”

ermites do more damage every year than floods, fires, and storms combined, and Florida is the #1 state in the country for termite problems because of our perfect tropical environment. Subterranean termites live under the soil. They cause over 80 percent of the $5 billion in termite damage to homes every year. Drywoods are swarming termites that live and feed in dry wood and do not need contact with soil. For subterranean termites, Good News Pest Solutions uses Syngenta’s Altriset®, the most green termite product ever made, that is placed around the perimeter of a house or building. It targets and paralyzes the jaws of termites to stop them from feeding. The company recommends Tent Fumigation to provide 100% elimination of Drywood termites. Our Termi-Shield method is also effective for localized spot treatments.

TERMITE CONTROL
Florida is known for its beautiful beaches, blues skies, and gorgeous weather. But did you know Florida’s fabulous climate is also ideal for termites? Yup, that’s right! The warm, balmy weather is not only perfect for beachgoers but for termites as well! But don’t worry— Good News Pest Solutions is here to help you eliminate and prevent these destructive critters from your home. As with any pest-related issue, the best defense is a strong offense. Good News sets the stage for a bug-free, damage-free home.
FLORIDA HAS TWO MAIN TYPES OF TERMITES
Florida’s two types of termites are known as Subterranean and Drywood. Subterranean termites live under the soil and are quite industrious creatures. They dig through the soil looking for food and can enter buildings through very small cracks in the slab and foundation of your home. Once they locate food, a tree stump or your home, they make a feeding trail back to their home or colony. Subterranean termites cause over 80% of the $5 billion in annual termite damage, more than floods and fires combined. Drywood are swarming termites that live and feed in dry wood and do not come into contact with soil. They can swarm over a building and enter it through unscreened soffit vents or gable and ridge vents. They can also enter through small cracks and crevices around the exterior of the building. Once they establish a colony in one part of a building, they can then swarm into other parts of the building. Although nearly 4,000 termite species have been classified, with 400 of these classified as pests, the primary termite species affecting humans are Subterranean
and Drywood. The primary difference between the two termite species is that Drywood species can live with the moisture trapped in wood, while Subterranean termites require added moisture from the soil or from water leaks. Termites live in social colonies of several hundred to several million individuals. One or more Queens can lay 2,000 eggs per day, which are tended by workers who forage for and store wood, leaf litter, soil and animal dung. Large-headed soldiers defend the colony from ant attacks by blocking entries and by biting intruders with their jaws. Winged, reproductive individuals of both sexes, swarm short distances from the nest usually in spring and summer to mate and establish a new nest in damp soil or timber. Swarming termites can be distinguished from ants by their straight antennae and abdomens paired to equal length wings.
although studies show these droppings may take 3-5 years to appear.
TREATMENT APPROACHES FOR SUBTERRANEAN AND DRYWOOD TERMITES
These different types of termites require different treatment approaches. For subterranean termites, we have the newest leading green treatment option, Altriset®. Altriset is the latest and greatest in termiticide science. It is placed around the perimeter of your home to help eliminate the termites. It does so by targeting and paralyzing the mouths of termites to stop them from feeding within hours. The Altriset is carried back into the colony by the termites and spreads to the others. Your home is termite-free within three months and fully protected for years to come. Pretty cool science, huh? We think so! And it doesn’t even say CAUTION on the label (but your sunscreen does).
FLORIDA IS KNOWN FOR ITS BEAUTIFUL BEACHES, BLUES SKIES, AND GORGEOUS WEATHER. BUT DID YOU KNOW FLORIDA’S FABULOUS CLIMATE IS ALSO IDEAL FOR TERMITES? Their dustless nests are constructed of chewed wood, saliva, feces and soil.
SIGNS OF INFESTATION
Mud-like tunnels indicate that Subterranean termites have moved from the soil to a wooden structure although cracks in walls, framing or slabs and utility openings are favorite entry points. Watch for heavy swarms in the spring and waviness in exposed exterior wood. Sand-like fecal pellets in and around wood are signs of Drywood termite infestation,
Drywood termites are best eliminated by tent fumigation. The colorless, odorless fumigant penetrates through all wood in a structure and provides 100% mortality, even in a 12 inch solid block of wood. Any other method leaves you guessing whether or not all the Drywoods are eliminated. Every time builders remove natural landscape and put homes in its place – a regular occurrence in southwest Florida – rodents move right along with the housing developments. And our area’s lush palms and fruit trees, so prized by homeowners, draw rodents by the bundles. re your pets upset? They can get stirred up when they hear and smell rodents in the house.
Can you see rodent droppings? Rat droppings are shiny black, blunt at both ends, and ½ - ¾ of an inch long. Mice droppings are smooth, with pointed ends, usually about 1/8 - ¼ of an inch long. Do you see small tracks and tail trails in dusty areas? Look for them in corners, along baseboards and near sources of food. Do you see areas where wood has been gnawed? Tooth marks that are 1/8 of an inch long may indicate rats; small, scratchy ones may indicate mice. Do you see smears along baseboards and other areas? Those could be rub marks caused by grease and dirt on rat fur. Is there a heavy musky odor in the house? Rats and mice smell bad. Sometimes it is better to hire Good News Pest Solutions
than to try to eliminate rodents yourself. This is particularly true if the pest problem is ongoing, if the infestation has become large, or if the products needed for control are only authorized for use by certified professionals. Good News is licensed and insured. This can be important to both protect your property and protect against liability. Before attempting any service, the professional inspector from Good News will talk with you to discuss exactly what the problem is, find out where and what you’ve seen or heard, and ask probing questions to ensure he or she fully understands the pest problem. Following that discussion, expect a thorough inspection of your home, identifying the pest or pests, and setting a treatment plan. Our Premiere Rodent program is the most comprehensive service available. We start by excluding all known entry points and sealing roof vents with proprietary covers. Then, we set several traps in the attic(s) to kill any rodents sealed in. Next, we install 4-6 of the best bait stations available in hidden locations around the exterior perimeter. These help to keep the outside
population of rodents to a minimum. We check the traps twice per week until we are sure there are no more live rodents inside. Next, we vacuum droppings and apply a deodorizer, sanitizer, viruscide to the entire attic space. Many of our customers are finalizing the process by capping their insulation with TAP (see page 24). Once TAP is installed, the attic looks brand new and acts as a deterrent to re-infestation. We guarantee a rodent-free environment for one year and continue monitoring and refilling the bait stations quarterly. Our Premier warranty can be renewed every year with a small investment and continued station monitoring for your ultimate peace of mind. Be aware that rodents are everywhere in Florida. We commonly find them in even the most exclusive homes and neighborhoods. About 20 percent of Good News’ pest eradication is for rodent control. So, if you or your pets see or hear evidence of rodents around your property, call the best, call Good News 941-412-9610.

Insects cannot build up a tolerance to T·A·P, as they can with organic biological treatments, and you never need to retreat the insulation. T·A·P controls ants, cockroaches, silverfish, termites, and other pests listed on the EPA label.
T·A·P Kills Bugs
EPA-Registered Pesticide Containing Boric Acid
Boric Acid, the active ingredient in T·A·P, is found in common household products such as saline eyewash solution,
detergents, and the food we eat. Although deadly to many insects, T·A·P is acceptable for use around pets and people.
T·A·P is Green!
Well, not literally, but T·A·P is permanent, made from all-natural ingredients and recycled newsprint, thus while you’re controlling pests and saving energy, you’re conserving landfill space. T·A·P earned the ENERGY STAR AWARD from the US Environmental Protection Agency for its part in protecting America’s vital energy reserve. T·A·P is superior to the cheaper, but widely-used glass-fiber in all phases: production, operation and disposal. Put simply, it takes less energy to make T·A·P; it takes less energy to heat and cool your home with T·A·P; and T·A·P presents no environmental hazard if ever removed. Eighty-seven percent of T·A·P is recovered newsprint—the same newspapers you put out on your curb for collection. That newsprint was made from wood pulp— trees: our most important renewable resource. AC systems because air readily moves through it. But in our attics, that means that fiberglass insulation lets the radiant heat from the sun heat up our ceilings, so that the AC has to run longer to cool the house. And in winter, warm air from inside the house escapes through the ceiling and is replaced by heavier cold air, making our furnace work harder and longer, driving up energy usage and cost. T•A•P is denser than fiber glass, and a poor air filter, so that it retards this convective heat transfer. Even at mild temperatures, without the convective effects of wind currents, T•A•P, with an R-factor of 3.7/inch, performs well against glass fiber @ approximately 2.5 (blown) to 3.2 (batt). To achieve the US Energy Department’s recommended R-value of 49, would require about 13 inches of T•A•P, or about 20 inches of glass fiber—pretty much an impossibility in a peaked-roof attic!
fine tolerances explode the fibers into a soft, gray, cotton-boll-like substance. Compare this with glass-fiber, containing only 0-20% recycled content, and melted
in giant gas-fired mills, which must remain “on” during down time, all the while giving off “greenhouse gases,” then spun in an additional process, using even more energy. Installing T•A•P in a 1500 ft. new ranch-style home productively recycles as much newsprint as a family will consume in 40 years; not only recycles, but removes it from the waste stream permanently, greatly saving landfill space. Adding to the “embodied energy” advantage of cellulose is the fact that most cellulose insulation is made with a high percentage of locally-generated raw materials. Other than the borates, which are about 11 percent of T•A•P by weight, it is not necessary to transport raw materials long distances to cellulose insulation plants. In addition, recycling newsprint locally as cellulose insulation makes it unnecessary to expend energy transporting it to distant landfills or deinking plants. Just as significant as its recycling advantage is the superiority of T•A•P as an insulating material. Many independent insulation authorities agree that cellulose is the best fiber thermal insulation, and an impressive body of scientific research supports this belief. Spun glass fiber is an excellent air filter; we use it in the air returns of our home heating/
Comfortable Conservation™
Here’s a number you can “hang your green hat on”: Typical energy savings from choosing T•A•P will range from 20 to 38 percent. Whether you measure it in kilowatts or dollars, expect big savings while reducing your carbon footprint. Since T•A•P is blown into attics, and sprayed into and onto walls, never cut or trimmed on the job, there is virtually no waste. Excess T•A•P is swept up or vacuumed and fed back into the hopper for re-use. This is a significant reduction in the disposal stream at the building site: the portion of the dumpster usually filled with cut and torn batts will have more room for other building product waste. Finally, if T•A•P ever must be removed because of damage (e.g., flooding or animal destruction), it may be land-filled without restriction, and presents no environmental hazard. Additionally, T•A•P is an EPA-labeled building product which has undergone “Fungi Resistance” testing (ASTM Method C1338) as is stated on its label. Other forms of insulation do not undergo this qualification, and may support mold growth during construction, or upon moist conditions. For more information about how T•A•P can work in your home, call 941-412-9610 or visit GoodNewsPestSolutions.com.

CONQUERING THE INVASION OF
ANTS!
A
nts are like tiny militia, an army of invaders that can easily take over, and sometimes destroy, your home. What might start with a small colony can rapidly grow into a threatening menace, chewing through wood and creating unsanitary and unsafe conditions. In fact, of all of the pests that can take up residence in your home, ants are among the most common and difficult to control. “Treat ants proactively, even if you only see one or two,” advises Jason Cameron, licensed contractor and host
of DIY Network’s Desperate Landscapes. Cameron’s experience in home remodeling and carpentry makes him an expert on how to detect and discover entry points for potentially destructive ants to enter the home.
you don’t. “We start by treating the perimeter of your home using a reduced–risk product to defend against ants that want to enter your house,” Burnside explains. “Next, we treat all interior and exterior entry points, as they are prime locations Dean Burnside, president of Good News for ants to infiltrate homes. Finally, Pest Solutions in Sarasota, agrees. “Some we use gel and/or dust formulations simple steps can help eliminate or reduce inside in kitchens, baths and laundry your ant problem,” he says, “but sometimes areas for any trailing ants. We caution a professional treatment is warranted.” homeowners to NOT spray any aerosol pesticides in the areas where our bait Good News uses a systematic approach to is working.” help treat the ants you see, and even those
Here are four tips from Good News to keep that army of ants off the front line of your home and back outside where they belong. Clear damp areas. Ants love to build their colonies in moist areas, especially those in which organic mulch, leaves, weeds, branches and brush remnants collect. Places where rain gutters overflow are perfect environments for ants, so be sure to clean them out regularly. If you have an ant problem year after year, see if there is wet debris up against your home and get rid of it. Use mulch sparingly, and cut back the landscape plants around the foundation.
1
Store food properly. To help protect the inside of your home from ants, store food in sealed containers, used dried goods in a timely manner and sweep up crumbs immediately. Even a small crumb on the floor is a large meal for an ant colony. Also, be sure to clean up after your pets. Many ant problems are the result of pet food bowls being left out with food remnants in them. Water bowls are also an attraction to ants. Burnside says, “We recommend picking up food bowls as soon as your pet has finished eating, rather than leaving them on the floor.”
When you imagine home... are not in the picture.

3
Monitor mounds. Outdoor mounds are nests that are underground. Fire ants particularly produce visible sand-like mounds. “Be sure to contact us to treat them as soon as possible,” Burnside advises. “These are nasty critters, and their bites can range from intense itching to downright dangerous.”
4
Check trees. Carpenter ants are the largest of all ant species and usually get into homes from nearby trees. “We will inspect trees on your property for nests, and treat as needed,” says Burnside. “Most carpenter ant nests are found in decaying wood in trees with holes or imperfections. In fact, carpenter ants can hollow out damaged wood throughout your home, causing problems that can be costly to repair.” For more information on how Good News can handle your ant problem, call 941-412-9610 or visit GoodNewsPestSolutions.com.

TICK AND FLEA TREATMENTS
Our friendly professional technicians will provide simple instructions on preparing your pets for our eco-superior tick and flea removal. Good News uses a proprietary strategy to eliminate all adult ticks and fleas and applies a residual to known harborage areas within the infested zones. Bathroom and overhead ceiling fans will be turned on upon our departure to facilitate aeration prior to re-entry. You may find seat and sofa cushions turned over and daybeds open when you return.
If your pets spend time outside on your lawn, it will be important to also treat the grass for fleas and under the shrubbery for ticks. You will need to keep your pets off the turf until our treatment is dry, usually an hour or two. Be sure to include treatment to your pets, either via flea/tick pill or bathing with a mild product. Flea collars and ointments applied to the fur are also helpful if needed. Also, be sure to vacuum every day for one week after treatment. This is very important to promote adult hatching so they get into the residual product sooner – and die!
Don’t forget to throw away the bag, if there is one. Be aware that you may still experience activity up to 30 days after the treatment and possibly longer if the pet has not been treated or has been exposed to other infested sites such as kennels, groomers, etc. The little buggers will live for only a few hours once exposed to the treated areas. We are very cautious about adding pesticides to your living spaces as our products have at least a 60-day residual effect.
