GREETINGS Ed Miller

President, Snyder Heating & Air Conditioning

T

hank you for all your help, support and efforts during 2014. It was an incredible year, with a lot of positives for our organization. We had the honor of being recognized by many organizations and distributors for being top in our market. We even won national awards for quality workmanship, and an award in 2013 for Safety Excellence. I am so proud to have such loyal customers that have allowed Snyder Air Conditioning the ability to help strengthen our community and positively impact the lives of the people here. Snyder Air Conditioning donates thousands of dollars every year to many of Jacksonville’s charitable organizations and encourages our employees to give back as well through donations or by volunteering their time. Thank you, Jacksonville, for your continued support.

I live by the golden rule in every aspect of my life. “Treat others as you want to be treated.” This philosophy is the cornerstone of Snyder Air Conditioning. Prompt service, quality installations, and attention to detail are areas that Snyder Air Conditioning refuses to compromise on. I have implemented an employee review system called Review Buzz to ensure 100% customer satisfaction and give homeowners a place to voice complaints and challenges. My “open door policy” means I’m accessible to employees and customers. In a field where few owners will take customer’s calls, I will speak directly with customers to mitigate issues. Through programs like these, Snyder Air Conditioning has received the Super Service Award recognition through Angie’s List for 2014 and an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. There’s no doubt that, as a country, we’ve seen some hard times lately. We’ve all been affected. Maybe you’ve been laid off, experienced trouble finding work or are seeing your hours reduced. I can’t predict the future, but after more than 27 years in the Air Conditioning industry, I can tell you that most air conditioning technicians didn’t lose their jobs. During tough times, people are more likely to try to fix equipment than to replace it. So, demand for repair technicians actually goes UP! If you’re thinking of a career change, I encourage you to contact us and become a part of our expanding SnyderMan Team. Have a great 2015. I am excited about all the possibilities that the New Year has to offer!

The Snyder Company

A Force in Heating and Cooling for 40 Years

A

by Tori Wexler

teen attends a community college, fills time, undecided. He squats in his catcher stance, and throws the softball to his pitcher, the manager of the baseball league. The two have already connected on the playing field. But it is a pivotal moment for Ed Miller, who remembers that day when he and Scott Snyder would connect over a long-range business relationship. “At the time, I didn’t know what I was going to do with my life,” says Miller. “I went up to him and said, ‘I need a real job.’ Mr. Snyder saw the need, the potential and the desire to quit mowing lawns in my face and heard the sincerity in my voice. He told me to come to his business the following day. That’s when I came to work for him. And I never looked back.” Snyder Heating and Air Conditioning was already thriving in the Jacksonville area. In 1973, Bob Snyder and his wife, Geral Dean, created the Snyder Company, and offered refrigeration along with heating

and air conditioning service. Later, his sons B.J. and Scott began working at Snyder Air. When Miller joined the team, he received on-thejob training and, in July 2011, had worked his way up to become President. Bob Snyder died in 2011, follwed a year later by his wife. Ownership passed on to Snyder’s two sons, B.J. and Scott, Vice President David Pickett, and Miller. When B.J. died, Michelle Snyder Kilday continued the family line. “Mr. Snyder always told me, ‘Learn what you can in the business,’” says Miller. And, 26 years later, he’s still learning. Miller has learned what works and doesn’t in a changing industry. In 1989, Snyder Air Conditioning and Heating was servicing

more homes and fewer businesses, and, because expert refrigeration technicians were difficult to find, the company eliminated the refrigeration department. “We switched over to a residential mindset with preventive maintenance being one of our key areas,” says Miller. It proved to be a turning point. Currently, 6500 maintenance agreements are serviced twice a year. Snyder Air has grown to 90 employees. An apprentice starts out in the maintenance department, as a “helper” and then works toward a service technician position. Miller says the process takes about two years. The company is a drug-free workplace, and all of the employees have background checks. Plus, the techs continually pursue education regarding the latest products and methods. videos, blogs and a “Review Buzz.” Technicians deliver comment cards to the clients while they work on the premises. Once the techs collect the cards, the company gets feedback immediately. Miller says most testimonials are directed at the service techs that go out to the homes, not the business itself, so the Buzz aims to understand the clients’ needs. “We run at 97 percent customer satisfaction rating” from the manufacturers surveys,” says Miller. The equipment efficiency has changed, along with the technology for the equipment, and Snyder Air employees have had to adapt. “We continually go to the manufacturers’ training to keep up to date on the products. Also we have ipads and iphones at hand when we go out to the residents,” Miller says. Additionally, the company “goes green” by recycling, using environmentally safe interior products, and is slowly phasing out hydro chlorofluorocarbons (R-22) used in refrigerants. The only thing constant is the technicians. “We have little or no turnover,” says Miller. “The only way someone gives us up is when they find another career or they did something wrong.”

Miller says he appreciates their longevity. He also credits the working environment for fostering loyal employees. In 1994, Bob Snyder implemented a “thank you” gift to employees by taking them on a cruise. If an employee works five years, Snyder pays for the employee. If they stay 10 years, Snyder pays for the employee and a guest. Miller sets the date in January for a November cruise, and all year the employees count down the days— sometimes out loud!

of it. We’ve heard many horror stories about the economy, but because of that tax credit being available, we kept busy.” Best of all, he adds, the company did not have to lay off employees. Miller’s clients also remain loyal, and continue to use the Snyder service. Miller says he appreciate clients who perform yearly maintenance on their air/heating systems, because they will get longevity out of the equipment, and can keep their

In 1985, B.J. Snyder invented “SnyderMan,” a logo, a website character, and a costumed person who accompanies employees into the community for civic events such as the “Zombie Run.” It’s this type of fun environment that fortifies a company when the economy swings downward and keeps business brisk. During the last slope, a tax credit became available for home owners, and Miller says his clients took advantage of it. He says, “We were fortunate that we didn’t really feel the brunt

Contractor to Work For in the South. Employee John Rand submitted the company’s nomination. They were featured in the magazine, which was distributed at the AHR Expo in Chicago.

Miller enjoys repeat clients, and receives validation from the community in numerous ways. In 2013, Snyder was one of only two Jacksonville dealers selected to become the main companies to offer the Daikin product line. The popular consumer website, Angie’s List, awarded Snyder with the 2014 Super Service Award. Both honors were “pretty monumental for us,” says Miller.

Additionally, in 2014, the company hooked up with the First Coast No More Homeless Pets (www.fcnmhp.org). Look for the 2015 calendar that displays SnyderMan and Michelle Snyder Kilday’s dogs on the cover.

He is also proud of another honor: Air Conditioning Heating News in Roscoe, IL conducted a national contest and Snyder Air Conditioning won for Best 10 COMFORT ZONE

The company became involved with helping a veteran’s family when an employee told Miller about Trevor Horne, a child with brain cancer whose family was struggling to pay bills and to keep their home comfortable for Trevor. Miller, who is on the board of directors for the Air Angels, learned about the plight of snyderac.com

Miller was born and raised in Jacksonville and currently makes his home there, with his wife, Shannon, and sons Colby, 23, and Kyle, 21. Sometimes, he ponders over how 26 years at Snyder Air Conditioning and Heating flew by. And it all started on a baseball field. “That’s how I got involved,” says Miller. “Scott Snyder asked me to ‘play ball’ with them.”

DUCT-FREE air conditioners offer MULTIPLE BENEFITS by Jacqueline Cross

uct-free HVAC units can be a useful alternative to cool and heat homes and businesses. HVAC companies nationwide are installing them in multi-family housing units, renovated older single-family homes, and office spaces. Perfect for residential and commercial consumers alike, they: •

Come in a variety of sizes

Are capable of controlling the air temperature in individual zones of a building or home

Offer economic and environmental advantages

Offer a unique way to save energy by only cooling areas that are presently being occupied

Offer cost-savings for those on a budget

Duct-free systems, as the name implies, have no ductwork, and consist of an outdoor condenser and an indoor air-handling unit. These are linked together with tubing that

houses the power cable, refrigerant, and a drain for condensation. In many ways, they operate in a manner similar to a standard air conditioning system. John Rand, the Installation Manager at Snyder Air, says that the advantages of duct-free systems include the ease of installation, energy savings, and flexibility in terms of the system placement. “The benefits are often overlooked by customers, but we like to point out that duct-free systems can be installed in places where conventional ducted systems simply can’t go,” he says. “Options for interior design include ceiling and wall mounted units, drop ceiling applications and even a picture gallery unit that allows the owner to customize the look of the space.” Most indoor units have profiles of about eight to eleven inches deep. Floorstanding models are also available. The “aesthetic-designs” fit into any home or office. All models offer a remote control to easily make adjustments to the system’s air flow pattern or temperature. The remote can control

the on and off button if the unit is positioned high on a wall or suspended from a ceiling. “I would caution against using a company whose technicians are not proficient in duct-free unit installation, as each unit must be correctly sized and placed,” says Rand. “An error here could result in wasted energy, improper temperature or humidity control, and greater long-term operational expenses.” Ed Miller, President of Snyder Air, encourages home and business owners replacing existing systems, building new or remodeling, to consider ductfree systems. He says, “The cost savings can be significant in terms of installation and energy use without compromising the comfort level of the rooms or occupants.”

nyderMan comes to the rescue, hosting The Blood Alliance mobile unit twice a year, on the premises of Snyder. They initiated a drive in July 2011, when Bob Snyder, the original owner of Snyder Air, was in the hospital and needed blood transfusions. Bank. In the 1980’s, The Blood Alliance expanded its community donor centers to include a location in Southeast Georgia, and changed its name to Florida Georgia Blood Alliance (FGBA). In 2001, the non-profit community blood bank began serving Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, and opened a Community Donor Center. They have 13 community donor centers, and 12 mobile units designed to support blood drives at businesses, churches, schools, civic groups, military, and community locations. Currently, the name is the original The Blood Alliance. They are the sole provider of transfusable blood products to all local hospitals in northeast Florida, and portions of Georgia and South Carolina. Snyder helps stock these hospitals by involving employees, friends, customers and anyone in the community who wants to donate blood. About 25 percent of the employees donate at the blood mobile and another 25 percent donate at the Alliance location, 8013 Beach Blvd., Jacksonville Fla 32216. Word gets out through the Snyder Facebook page.

Spokesperson for the Blood Alliance, Odette Struyz says, “The Blood Alliance constantly looks for ambassadors in our community to be advocates for blood donation. Ed Miller is one such champion to help us help our community. As the only provider of blood to all area hospitals, Ed’s efforts to host blood drives at Snyder and to rally donors is an important part of our daily commitment to collect blood for local patients needing transfusions. We depend on our community, and on chairpersons like Ed to raise awareness for helping to save lives through blood donation.” Miller says that that the drive is a good benefit for Snyder employees because they will actually use it for an employee or an employee family member. “It only takes about an hour to give a pint of blood, and that one pint can save up to three lives,” says Struyz. “There aren’t many opportunities in life where you can choose to be a hero. Giving blood is one of those opportunities where you make the choice to become a hero.”

O

nce you’ve invested in an air conditioning system, the upfront cost may be expensive, but it pays out in long-term comfort. A cooling system should work without the consumer noticing it, similar to a refrigerator. You don’t know or care about energy costs when you open a refrigerator door and reach for that cold drink; you just know you need it, it’s working, and the costs becomes invisible. That is, if all is working well. Research has shown that an air conditioner’s efficiency goes down by five percent every year of operation.

Many HVAC companies provide maintenance programs, but they may not include older systems. Older systems have an increased risk for breaking down, are less energy-efficient, and more costly than

arrives, so that it’s thawed and ready for service.

• Make sure the system is accessible; if your system's products are in an attic or crawl space, make sure they are easily accessible.

• Prepare a file with information on all prior services performed on your system.

The time to start wincing happens when you turn on the system, hear odd noises, see leaks and notice a rise in energy bills. These are just a few reasons why this investment requires regular maintenance. If your air conditioner runs constantly for most of the year, you can proactively keep it operating at peak performance by changing dirty filters, cleaning coils that become caked with dust and remove some blockages that cause leaks, leading to potential long-term damage. These initial maintenance practices help the longevity of your system, but a professional HVAC technician can give a full inspection and tune-up, to ensure it is running smoothly. A Technician replaces HVAC filters, lubricates all mechanical parts, tightens belts, fills coolant levels, fine-tunes the thermostat and even inspects insulation in the ductwork for leaks. A clean duct system is vital, as this is the medium that allows cool or hot air to travel throughout the home. If the ductwork encounters obstacles, the air flow reduces, and the cooling system must work harder, thus consuming more energy. Additionally, a technician inspects the electrical panel; cleans the condenser unit; oils

Before you contact an HVAC expert technician to inspect your system, be prepared: • Know where all your heating and cooling systems and their components are located. • Check or replace your air filter. A dirty air filter is a common cause of problems. This is the ongoing job of the consumer,

• If your heat pump or air conditioner is frozen, shut if off before the technician

• Fix the time of service; make sure someone responsible is there at that time. • Keep handy previous maintenance records.

UV LIGHTS

KILL GERMS WITH

by Nathan Freyburger

U

ltraviolet (UV) lights are inexpensive germicidal devices that help to improve the air quality of your home. Installed inside an HVAC system, UV lights kill pathogens that can cause disease and aggravate your allergies. They also work to prevent the growth of new germs, and they may even help reduce your risk for developing mold around the house, since they kill microorganisms that encourage mold growth. Your air conditioning and heating system is a breeding ground for germs, since it’s warm and moist inside. All air in your home travels through your HVAC system. In the process, your system collects germs such as mold, bacteria and virus, which are then blown back out through the vents and dispersed everywhere— and this is only after they’ve had time to multiply. Allowing these germs to run amok inside your air conditioner can lead to serious health concerns, especially if you don’t clean your system as often as you should. In particular, these microorganisms can attach themselves to your system’s evaporator coil, forming a disgusting film 20 COMFORT ZONE

of collected germ matter. This film will also collect any dust and dirt that may flow through your system, impairing airflow and reducing its energy efficiency. If your evaporator coil is dirty, your system has to work harder, which translates to higher energy bills. Installing a UV light can reduce the accumulation of germs, cleaning the air in your home and improving the overall efficiency of your HVAC system. These devices work by using ultraviolet radiation to kill germs as they coast through your system, assuring that far fewer unwanted microorganisms make it out alive. UV light air cleaners come in a variety of sizes. Some are small, designed to be attached to a one-room air conditioning unit. Other lights are more powerful; these are placed inside your central air system, working to kill germs throughout the entire home.

Are these safe to use? Ultraviolet light is the radiation from sunlight. And while ultraviolet radiation in significant doses can cause serious health problems, including cancer, the air-cleansnyderac.com

ing lights used in HVAC systems are not harmful to humans. Air cleaners emit UV-C radiation, which does not have a wavelength long enough to penetrate the skin. So, while UV air cleaners are powerful enough to irradiate germs into extinction, they will not harm you or your family.

Isn’t an air filter enough? Filters are successful at trapping large particles, such as pollen, dust and even dust mites. However, most germs are small enough to pass through a filter, even if you use expensive high-efficiency ones. UV lights pick up the slack, helping to kill any additional viruses, bacteria and mold that aren’t stopped by your air filter. There are a variety of UV light systems available. Whether you’re looking for a simple device to be used on a single air conditioning unit or you’re interested in a whole-home system designed to keep all the air in your home clean, there’s guaranteed to be a system out there that will benefit you. Compare prices and brands to make sure you get a UV cleaner that will help you breathe easier than ever before.

AFTER A SEVERE STORM

Take Precautions Before Starting Heating and Cooling Equipment Homeowners should not be too eager to get things back to normal after a storm, because improper maintenance and preparation can cause problems years later.

22 COMFORT ZONE

A

fter a severe thunderstorm, tornado or hurricane – natural events that frequent Florida – homeowners need to take several precautions before attempting to salvage or restart heating and cooling equipment. “It’s important to remember not to immediately restart heating and cooling equipment after a severe storm because it can be dangerous and could cause further damage,” said Ed Miller, President of Snyder Air. “The equipment may be severely damaged, its wiring may be damaged or it may have debris lodged in it. These are some of the many reasons

snyderac.com

why it’s best to have a qualified service technician inspect your heating and cooling equipment after a severe storm.” To ensure your safety and prevent further damage to equipment, take the following steps after a storm: • If the storm caused flooding, don’t start equipment until you are certain there is no water inside any components. If you’re not sure, don’t start it. • Have a reputable electrician or a technician from the power company or city inspect your home’s internal and external

wiring to make sure they’re dry and safe before you turn on any electrical equipment. • If the power company gives you approval to turn on the electricity in your home, but you think you may have a problem with your heating or cooling equipment, have the service company disconnect the equipment from the electrical source, and have it properly serviced first. • If there was flooding, open equipment and get some air circulating inside. This will speed up the drying process. After a storm, use only reputable service companies to help you get your air conditioner and heater up and running again. “Unscrupulous companies can descend on disaster areas,” Ed says. “Be careful. If necessary, go without service a little longer to make sure you get real value for your money.” 904-373-9419

FAMILY FEATURES

F

iring up the grill is an American tradition. The farm families who produce the food so many people enjoy at backyard cookouts want to share some of their favorite grilling recipes, as well as an appre ciation for how food gets from the farm to the table.

Things to Know Before You Shop the Meat Case n There’s no need to pay extra for poultry or pork that’s labeled hormone-free. USDA prohibits farmers from using hormones to raise chicken and pigs. n Nearly all beef cattle, whether raised organically or conventionally, spend the majority of their lives on pastures eating grass. n Purchasing organic, grass-fed and free-range meats does not make them safer to consume. These labels refer to how the animals are raised, but all meat and poultry can contain bacteria that could cause illness. n Most cases of foodborne illness can be prevented with proper processing, handling and cooking of food to destroy bacteria.

Here are some of Amanda, Danell and Nicole’s favorite grilling recipes:

Beef Rack of Ribs

By Danell Kalcevic Serves: 4 to 6 Salt (to taste) 1 tablespoon black pepper (to taste) 1 tablespoon seasoned garlic salt (to taste) Cayenne pepper (optional) 1 to 2 racks of beef ribs (number of racks based on number of people) 1 tablespoon yellow mustard 1/3 cup brown sugar One bottle of favorite barbecue sauce

The night before serving, prepare rub for beef ribs (salt, pepper, seasoned garlic salt and optional cayenne pepper). Sprinkle both sides of ribs and then rub vigorously. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, place on medium temperature grill and spread yellow mustard and brown sugar on each side of the ribs. Grill for 5 to 8 minutes until each side is slightly browned and caramelized. Remove ribs from grill and slice with sharp knife. Place individual ribs in a crock pot on low. Add one bottle of your favorite barbecue sauce. Let simmer 6 to 8 hours.

Country Barbecue Potatoes By Nicole Small

Serves: 4 to 6 2 pounds small red potatoes 2 tablespoons butter, melted 1 teaspoon honey 3 teaspoons seasoned salt 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1/4 teaspoon pepper

Preheat oven to 450°F. Coat 9 x 13 baking pan with nonstick spray. Cut potatoes into small to medium–sized pieces and put in pan. Melt butter and honey, and then drizzle over potatoes. Sprinkle with seasoned salt, salt, garlic powder and pepper. Toss well to coat. Bake, uncovered, for 25 to 30 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and golden brown. Stir potatoes at least once.

Grilled Hawaiian Ham Sandwich By Amanda Folkens

Serves: 1 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1/2 tablespoon seasoning pepper 1 to 2 1/4-inch thick ham slices (about the same thickness as the bread) Cooking spray Pineapple slices (can be fresh or canned) 2 slices sourdough bread

Preheat grill for high heat. Mix brown sugar with pepper to create a rub mixture. Using your hands, massage the rub onto both sides of the slices of ham. Ham slices should be completely covered (front and back) with brown sugar mix. Place ham slices on sheet of lightly greased foil, then place onto grill. On separate sheet of greased foil, lay pineapple slices out, uncovered. Cook for 6 to 8 minutes or until brown caramelization appears around edges of ham and pineapple. Remove ham and pineapple from heat and assemble onto toasted sourdough bread. 904-373-9419

That’s not just fanciful wishing. The North Florida Air Conditioning Contractors Association (NFACCA) created this heavenly group of local air conditioning contractors and suppliers. The Air Angels Foundation consists of human angels who pay it forward by providing heating and air conditioning to those who are seriously ill or disabled, and who do not have the means or ability to provide it themselves. 28 COMFORT ZONE

Whether it is a single person, a friend or a family member in the household, whose life depends on comfortable temperatures to function in daily life, the Air Angels repair or replace an existing air conditioning system, or provide an heating/cooling system to a home that had neither. Snyder Air Conditioning is making a big difference to one individual. Snyder learned of the Horne family whose priorities changed overnight. Nine-year-old Trevor discovered a cancerous mass in his neck. Diagnosis: Lymphoma. Trevor’s treatment involved chemotherapy treatment for 19 days; then, one day chemotherapy for six days medicine cycle; followed by one-day chemotherapy, then 11 days

medicine. Rest cycle. Then, start over at beginning. This cycle was to repeat for three months; then more scans and evaluations and update prognosis. Trevor had been positive and upbeat but the negative side effects such as hair loss from treatment had just begun. Snyder donated materials and labor to install a new air conditioning system for the Horne family, as their compressor had failed. The Horne family is thankful for the new A/C system as this will be such a great relief for their family from the heat. Trevor will have comfortable living conditions as he fights this battle against cancer. Yes, some angel is watching over him.

HEAT

PUMP:

A Better Option Than a Furnace or an Air Conditioner

“A

heat pump is an all-in-one heating and air conditioning system that works year round to keep you comfortable. During warmer months, a heat pump works as a normal air conditioner. It extracts heat from inside the home and transfers it to the outdoor air. In colder weather, however, the process reverses and the unit collects heat from the outdoor air to transfer inside your home,” said Ed Miller, President of Snyder.

Even when the air outside feels cold, it still contains some heat. When there’s not enough heat in the outside air to meet the demand of the thermostat setting, an electric heater supplements the outdoor air to warm the home. “Heat pumps are capable of providing years of worry-free heating and cooling and significant savings on electric bills,” Miller said. The amount a consumer

can save depends on many factors. For example, the efficiency of old equipment compared to that of a new heat pump can have an effect on how much will be saved. The climate in which a consumer lives, as well as electric rates, are also factors. “Unlike a furnace that turns fossil fuel or electricity into heat, the heat pump collects heat that already exists in the outdoor air, ”Miller said. “Consequently, a heat pump will produce two to three times more heat than the energy it uses.” A heat pump also produces savings while cooling a home. A SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rate measures cooling efficiency. A higher SEER number produces greater savings. A SEER of 12.00 to 13.00 is typical in homes over eight or ten years old and a new, higher efficiency heat pump can be as much as 50 percent more efficient.

To find out more about heat pumps and how they can save on energy costs, call Snyder at 904-373-9419.

“Heat pumps are often misunderstood or not understood a t a l l . Be ca u se of t h i s, co n s u m e rs m ay n ot rea l i ze that there may be a better heating and cooling option than a traditional furnace or air conditioner.”

Together, Snyder Heating and Air Conditioning and First Coast No More Homeless Pets (FCNMHP) helped to provide families with educational tips on how to protect their pets during the hot summer months via a Pet Heat Safety social media campaign.

F

loridians know how scorching the summer months can get, but heat safety is often overlooked, especially for pets. This past summer, Snyder Heating and Air Conditioning partnered with First Coast No More Homeless Pets to spread heat safety awareness among pet owners. FCNMHP, founded in 2002, is a non-profit organization based in Jacksonville. They operate the largest spay and neuter clinic in the country. FCNMHP relies on donations that are vital to their life-saving programs. It is their goal to end all euthanasia of cats and dogs in shelters in Northeast Florida and the nation. FCNMHP’s approach to pet overpopulation is to provide free and low-cost spay/neuter services and adoption initiatives. Together, Snyder and FCNMHP hosted a Facebook Campaign to raise pet “heat safety” awareness. The Facebook campaign asked participants to enter into the Pet Heat Safety Contest by uploading a photo of their pets staying cool using the hashtag “#MyPetIsCool”. The ‘coolest’ pet photos were chosen to be featured in Snyder’s Heat Safety eCards that were distributed across Facebook. Snyder donated $1 to FCNMHP for every ‘Like’ or ‘Share’ on an eCard or a photo that used the hashtag “#MyPetIsCool”. Over the length of the contest, Snyder Heating and Air Conditioning posted numerous Facebook updates highlighting the “cool” pet participants. Each eCard posted featured a participant’s pet and a corresponding summer safety tip. The Campaign started on June 3, 2014 and ran through July 28, 2014. The first week the contest received 473 ‘Likes & Shares’ on Snyder’s Facebook site alone, thanks to all the pet lovers. Altogether, the contest reached 74,000 people and $1,000 was raised for First Coast No More Homeless Pets.

Fund, which allows for them to provide free or reduced-cost care for animals in need of medical care. FCNMHP believes that no animal should have to suffer because they are homeless or their owner cannot provide medical care. Every day they see pets who are injured, sick or have been neglected. However, with charitable donations the cost of much-needed vet care is greatly reduced for owners facing severe financial barriers. By contributing to the Angel Fund donors have helped many owners keep their pet alive.

In addition, Snyder Heating and Air Conditioning donated to the FCNMHP’s Angel Fund. FCNMHP created the Angel

tem. Additionally, the spores blow throughout the house, building up over time. This is particularly dangerous for people with asthma or other breathing problems.

Stopping mold in its tracks is a challenge, but one that needs to be faced before the organisms damage equipment, destroy walls and floors, or harm the health of you and your pets. Cleaning and preventive maintenance of an air conditioning system is important in any climate, but is imperative in Northeast Florida. Mold can accumulate in several different areas of an air conditioning system, and it’s important to have your unit checked and cleaned once or twice a year. If mold is able to grow, it makes the air conditioning unit work harder, which costs more and decreases the life expectancy of your sys34 COMFORT ZONE

The Florida Department of Health’s website points out that there are four kinds of health problems that come from exposure to mold: allergic illness, irritant effects, infection, and toxic effects. The site explains: “For people who are sensitive to molds, symptoms such as nasal and sinus irritation or congestion, dry hacking cough, wheezing, skin rashes or burning, watery or reddened eyes may occur. People with severe allergies to molds may have more serious reactions, such as hay-fever-like symptoms or shortness of breath.” The Environmental Protection Agency suggests not running the HVAC system if mold is suspected, as it could spread the spores throughout the building. But stopping the use of an air conditioning system due

to suspected mold growth in Northeast Florida would create uncomfortable conditions during the summer. That’s why regular cleaning and maintenance is crucial to your family’s and your employees’ health. Most of us think we only need to prepare against mold if we’re going away for the entire summer. Few realize that, under the right circumstances, mold can form in just 48 hours! And once it starts, it reproduces every six minutes. So do the math: If you’re leaving for more than a week, there’s an outside chance you could return to a funny smell that means there’s something wrong. Generally speaking, if you’re only leaving for a week or two, all you need to do is set your thermostat at 80 or 82 degrees and you should not have a problem. If you plan to be away for a month or longer, that’s when it would be wise to take more serious precautionary measures.

WHY GET H

a Second Opinion ?

ow many times have you taken your car to get serviced for an oil change, and the mechanic gave you the bad news?

to be taken. Second, a little insight to how your system works.

No, it’s not a change of oil you need, lady. It’s a change of engine. Right. See ya . . . Onto the next, and hope that mechanic tells the truth. So it is with the heating and air conditioning industry. A small problem that can be solved with a filter change becomes a huge HVAC installation, according to one company. But, by getting a second opinion, you get the opportunity to learn: First, how not 38 COMFORT ZONE

Before you commit to the first HVAC company that pops up in a directory, be open to several companies. When the first technician reviews your system’s problem, come armed with some Google investigation, a little HVAC knowledge and ask questions. If the problem seems small enough to fix with a screw driver, and the technician wants to sell you an entire new system, there’s only one word to reply: NEXT. “On more than one occasion, I’ve had customers call us seeking a second opinion

snyderac.com

because some other air conditioning contractor told them they needed a whole new system,” says Holly Foust, the Lead Coordinator of Snyder Air. “We’d head out to look at their system for them, and sure enough all they need is a small repair. It happens more often than you think.” Here are some ways to protect you from unscrupulous HVAC companies: Seek companies online, and dive into their websites. Look for testimonials, business affiliations or other organizations that show your chosen business operates fully and openly in the community.

Look for sites online that review businesses, and see if your chosen business is out there. Make sure the business has a license. Ask for a referral from friends or acquaintances. You may hit the jackpot with all your homework, but in case you still feel doubt, get a second opinion. Give the details of the first company’s diagnosis, so the second company’s technician will know exactly what to look for. Some companies offer expertise, even if they don’t do the repairs. When one company promises a new system will solve the problem, a second company may dig around and suggest home-grown methods to keep it running smoothly: Like, a reminder to change out the filters more frequently. When you seek a second opinion from another service, ask these questions: Can your company save me hundreds of dollars? Will the first company’s assessment align with the second opinion? If the second is

honest, they will tell you the problem can be fixed without excess output. And, if the first company is telling the truth, the second technician’s diagnosis will tell you if the estimate was fairly priced. If the homeowner enjoys doing home repairs, the technician will assist and offer advice on how to do it right, instead of offering to revamp the whole system. A professional HVAC company reviews your needs and lets you know if you are getting the proper air conditioning system. They’ll let you know if the repair is something you should be able to do yourself. Above all, a tech from the second opinion considers your budget and works accordingly. Another plus: If the two companies assess the same problem and come up with the same solutions, you are safe to go with either one. Honesty is the best policy. And, a reputable company will allow a sale to go to a competitor, as long as the diagnosis is the best, honest information they can deliver. Honesty may factor in persuading the customer to use that second company’s service down the road.

AIR CONDITIONER:

REPAIR or REPLACE?

T

he air conditioning unit outside of your home works hard day in and day out to keep your family cool. Just like every other bit of technology in your life your air conditioner accumulates wear and tear every day from casual use. If you are having some problems finding AC repair, Jacksonville leaves you with many choices.

or having a brand new one installed. If the cost of fixing your expensive home appliance is close to your quote for a new installation, the replacement option is a better choice.

Age is Often the Determinant

Find the best AC repair Jacksonville has to offer, and make some repairs on your AC unit this year. There is a good chance that installing a new air conditioning system will end up costing you less in the long run. You can decide whether you are going to repair your current unit or replace it. Here are some tips to help you figure out what the future of your air conditioner is.

Cost Difference Between and AC Repair and AC Replacement

The first thing that you are going to want to look into is what the difference in cost is between having your current AC repaired 40 COMFORT ZONE

On the other hand, with a newer air conditioner that requires just a simple fix that is low in cost, you will find it more beneficial to just keep what you have and complete the small repair. When it comes to an older air conditioner though, the improvement on energy efficiency alone can quickly offset the price paid for a new system. Keep this in mind when trying to choose between an AC repair or an AC replacement.

The General Rule of Air Conditioner Efficiency

The rule of thumb for trying to decide, based on the age, is if the system is around two years old, there is a good chance repairs will be beneficial. An air snyderac.com

conditioner’s lifespan is around eight years. If yours is around that age, replacement is what you are looking for. When it comes to air conditioners that are about four years old, it is possible for the decision to go either way.

Get Rid of Faulty Systems

If your air conditioner has done nothing but give you problems since it was installed, it could save you future headaches by just junking your constantly failing air conditioning unit. This will save yourself more hassle than you know. Having a system that is reliable and efficient that also includes a yearly scheduled maintenance visit will prove an amazing choice that will continue functioning for years.

Rely on Newer Technology

The biggest advantage of a new AC unit is the strong possibility that the new model is energy-efficient. It is not likely that the monthly savings on your utility bills will

UNDERSTANDING WARRANTIES

don’t get caught in the heat without your warranty

T

hank you for choosing Snyder to supply your indoor air quality needs! Here are just a few words on how to maximize your investment by understanding warranties. When you purchased your new air conditioning system, it included a manufacturer’s warranty. You should have received a copy of this warranty from the manufacturer, which contains their terms and conditions. If you can’t find your warranty paperwork, call our customer service department. We’ll be happy to help you! Manufacturers are beginning to enforce the terms and conditions within your paperwork. These changes may affect you. Most manufacturers allow you to transfer warranties to the new owner upon the sale of your property for a small fee and within 30 days of the closing. Manufacturers are now requiring the use of OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts. There are thousands of possible OEM parts for any of the multiple manufacturers, which make using and obtaining OEM parts difficult, and we can no longer use generic stock parts to replace a unit that is under warranty. However, it is our priority to repair your equipment as quickly as possible. Manufacturers often require yearly maintenance by an authorized dealer/servicer in order to keep a warranty in good standing. If you are not currently having maintenance done on your equipment at least annually, please contact us or an authorized dealer/servicer in your area as soon as possible. Please call our customer service department if you have any questions or wish to schedule maintenance. We offer maintenance plans, and our professional staff will gladly explain them to you and help you choose the one that best fits your needs. 42 COMFORT ZONE

Air Conditioning & Heating System PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE The best way to help avoid costly repair bills and get more life out of your air conditioning system is to have it cleaned and maintained by Snyder’s Preventive Maintenance Department. A majority of breakdowns are due to either a dirty indoor evaporator coil or a dirty outside condenser coil. Dirty coils are a big factor in causing compressors and fan motors to go bad. Dirty coils also lower your systems’ efficiency, causing a higher electric bill. That is why utility companies, and the manufacturer of your equipment, recommend that maintenance be done on your air conditioning system twice a year (every 6 months).
