MORE THAN A GAME

The Campbellsville University football team has a longstanding history of giving back to the community and helping spread awareness to national causes during its 29 years since reinstating the program in 1987. The Tigers have taken mission trips across North America to help spread faith and give back to the less fortunate. In 2016, head coach Perry Thomas, assistant coach Matt Atwood and former Tiger Jacob Russell joined 25 other members of the Campbellsville athletic department on its mission trip to the Dominican Republic. Two years prior, a few individuals from the football program were part of a mission trip to Costa Rica, with other members of the athletic department.

The Tiger football program also takes the time during spring break each season to take a trip to Florida to play softball against inmates in various prisons in Florida and also ministering during the trips. Former football assistant coach and current Director of Athletics Jim Hardy has helped lead these trips to Florida. During these mission trips, Campbellsville works with Sports Reach, based in Campbellsville, and SCORE International.

Along with mission trips across North America, the Tiger football program has raised awareness and money for national organizations. Each season, Campbellsville and the American Football Coaches Association partner with Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy in its Coach to Cure MD campaign in September and October. The Tigers help raise awareness for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, while helping raise money toward research to find a cure for MD. During the 2017 Maroon and White spring football game, the Tigers put together a bone marrow drive. The Tigers worked with the Bone Marrow Drive Registry and hosted Get in the Game, Save a Live Bone Marrow Drive.

Campbellsville also helps fundraise for Breast Cancer, domestic violence and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The Tigers helped aid SpringHaven Domestic Violence Program, based in Elizabethtown, Kentucky to bring in donations for the Shelter Alliance. Campbellsville also worked with the Finley Foundation to raise awareness for SIDS. The Finley Foundation was started after Finley William Ellison -- named after former Tiger head coach Ron Finley -- who passed away from SIDS in 2013. Over its first 29 seasons, Campbellsville has worked with many different organizations to assist in spreading the awareness for different causes, while also assisting the less fortunate.

30TH ANNIVERSARY OF CAMPBELLSVILLE FOOTBALL The Campbellsville University football program turns 30 this coming season. Following the reinstatement of the varsity football program in 1987, the Tigers have captured four Mid-South Conference championships and appeared in the NAIA Football Championship Series four times. In 2001, Campbellsville advanced to the national quarterfinals following an opening round victory over the University of St. Francis, 42-21, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Along with its success in the MSC and the NAIA, the Tigers 1987 Team Photo appeared in the 2000 KWTO Bowl where it fell to Baker University, 27-23. Campbellsville also made back-to-back appearances in the NCCAA Victory Bowl in 2010 and 2011. Campbellsville defeated Greenville College, 21-7, in the 2011 NCCAA Victory Bowl to win its first title in program history. During the first 29 years of the football program, Campbellsville has produced five NAIA First Team All-Americans, along with five NAIA Second Team All-Americans. On the national level, 11 student-athletes earned NAIA Honorable Mention All-American honors, while 49 individuals garnered Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete recognition. In the NCCAA, three Tigers were selected as NCCAA Players of the Year with Dwight Houston earning the award in 2011, followed by Jacob Russell and Hunter Brown winning the award in 2015 and 2016, respectively. Along with Player of the Year winners, a total of 21 student-athletes were named to the NCCAA First Team All-America, along with five second team honorees and 10 honorable mention award winners

Campbellsville also has a pair of student-athletes etched in the NAIA record books. During the 2007 and 2008 seasons, Greg Fountain led the NAIA in rushing after posting 1,511 rushing yards in 2007 and 1,726 yards in 2008 to average 151.1 and 156.9 yards per game, respectively.

TRADITIONS

Within the Mid-South Conference, a total of 107 student-athletes garnered First Team All-MSC honors and 87 individuals were selected to the All-MSC Second Team. Along with first and second team designations, Campbellsville has produced 130 All Mid-South Conference honorable mention honorees and 125 Academic All-MSC award winners.

1988 Team Photo

In 2015, Jacob Russell led the country in total offense and passing yards. He recorded 3,676 passing yards during the season and averaged 334.2 yards a game. Russell capped off his season with 4,099 total yards of offense, and averaged 372.6 yards per contest in 2015. The Tiger football program has compiled an overall record of 147-163-1 heading into the 30th year of the program. At home, Campbellsville is 78-74-1 overall, while notching a Mid-South Conference record of 92-89-1. The Tigers also produced 15 winning seasons over the first 29 years of the program.

FOOTBALL

TRADITIONS

1987 - REINSTATEMENT OF VARSITY PROGRAM The Tiger football program was dormant for 50 years until athletic director Don Bishop, the Athletics Boosters’ Club and athletics committee worked to restore the program in 1987. With the approval of then president Dr. W.R. Davenport, former Russell Country High School coach Ron Finley was hired to lead the program’s rebirth. The first four-year varsity program began in 1988 with no scholarships, one full-time assistant coach, five part-time assistants and only a part-time trainer. At the time, few people realized how successful the football program would become, with more than 100 football players enrolling each fall – an increased enrollment that helped offset the original expenses involved in setting up the program. Davenport said that the addition of the program “changed the course of the institution.” Campbellsville hosted Centre College for its first game September 10, 1988 at what is now known as Finley Stadium. While the 1988 season ended with a 0-11 record, the Tigers captured their first victory on September 9, 1989 with a 20-16 win over the University of Evansville. Campbellsville scored with 21 seconds remaining to pull off the historic win in front of its home crowd. The following year was Finley’s first winning season with the Tigers (8-2) earning the program’s first national ranking and Finley a Coach of the Year honor. The 1990s became the Tigers’ best decade, as they rose to a No. 2 national ranking in the sixth week of the 1991 season. The Tigers maintained a Top 10 ranking until their undefeated run ended at Lambuth University, 35-31, in week nine. The Tigers narrowly missed the postseason after falling at Georgetown College to end the year. However, the 1992 season ended on a different note. Campbellsville knocked off Georgetown for the first time in program history, 29-27, at home on November 14. The win clinched the Tigers’ first Mid-South Football Conference Championship in a three-way tie for first Ron Finley: June 27, 1933 - October 5, 2009 with Georgetown and Union College. Campbellsville topped Georgetown again in 1996 and 1997, leading to an outright Mid-South championship and the program’s first NAIA playoff appearance in 1997. The decade closed with a Tiger assistant being named the American Football League Assistant Coach of the Year for three consecutive years (Sam Wickliffe, Eric Graves and Haywood Riner) - tying for the most of any school in all of college football. Campbellsville returned to the postseason in 2000, playing Baker University in the KWTO Bowl. The following year, CU posted its best record in school history (10-3) and advanced to the NAIA Final Eight against Georgetown. Finley ended his college coaching career in 2002 with a 77-81-1 record. After the growing pain years of 1988 and 1989, Finley’s Tigers posted a 75-63 record and was 43-32 in his last seven seasons. Perry Thomas was hired in 2008 with the mission of restoring the Tiger football program to prominence - and he has done that. He returned the Tigers to the postseason in 2010 and 2011 with trips to the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Victory Bowl. The Tigers defeated Greenville College to win the 2011 Victory Bowl title. In 2014, Thomas led the Tigers to the NAIA Playoffs for the first time since 2001, as CU won a share of the Mid-South Conference West Division. Campbellsville backed that up with another impressive season, winning the MSC West and reaching the NAIA Playoffs for the second-straight season.

PERRY THOMAS

HEAD COACH

(Western Kentucky University ’86) Head Football Coach, Campbellsville University 48-51 (.485) - 10th Year

16

Perry Thomas is entering his 10th season as head coach of the Campbellsville football program. After a 3-7 record in 2013, Thomas has turned the football program around and has recorded the most successful two-year stint in CU history. In 2014 and 2015, the Fighting Tigers have a 15-7 record and knocked off five teams that were ranked inside the NAIA top eight. Campbellsville broke 23 program records in 2015 en route to winning its secondstraight Mid-South Conference West Division title and earning two-straight NAIA Football Championship Series playoff berths. The MSC title in 2014 was the first since 1997 and the playoff berth was the first since 2001. The Tigers took a step back in 2016 by going 2-8 overall. CU battled season-ending injuries and only starting one upperclassmen on the defensive side of the ball. Thomas inherited the Campbellsville University football program in December 2007, coming off an 0-10 season. After posting a 3-8 record his first season in 2008, and finishing runner-up in the Mid-South Conference East Division in 2009 at 7-4, Thomas’ program was named the 20th-most improved program in all levels of college football and No. 6 most improved in the NAIA. In 2010, he posted a 7-5 record, giving the Tigers their first back-to-back winning seasons in nearly a decade and took CU to the postseason for the first time since 2001 with a trip to the NCCAA Victory Bowl. The Tigers returned to the Victory Bowl in 2011, winning their first NCCAA title on their home field. During the 2009 season, Thomas put Campbellsville’s defense among the nation’s best in third down situations and inside the red zone, as the Tigers posted their first winning season since 2004 and best finish since 2003, at 7-4. He led the Tigers to their first win over rival Georgetown College since 1997, with a 28-21 victory at home and also knocked off a top 10 team in Shorter College, 42-28, in the CollegeFanz/NAIA National Game of the Week. During the season, the Tigers returned to the NAIA National Rankings for the first time in

2 0 1 7

five seasons, ranking as high as No. 24 and finishing the year at No. 28. As a first-year college head coach in 2008, Thomas coached the NAIA’s leading rusher, Greg Fountain, who was his first NAIA AllAmerican and later signed a pro contract in Europe. NAIA. The Tigers also finished 10th in the country with 38.5 points a game.

BROWN MAKING HISTORY

- In his first year as the starting quarterback for Campbellsville in 2016, Hunter Brown made his mark on the Tiger program and the nation. - Brown led the country in passing yards per game with 377.6 yards and his 373.4 yards of total offense per game was third best in the NAIA. - In 2016, Brown’s 373.4 yards of total offense a game and 377.6 passing yards a game was also the best in a single season by a Campbellsville player. He also threw for 617 yards on October 1, 2016 against Faulkner University, which set a new programbest and his 618 total yards in the game also set a new program record.

BATES IMPRESSES IN KICKING GAME - Bradley Bates took over as the starting kicker for the Tigers last season, and he was one of the top kickers in the nation. - In 2016, Bates finished second in the NAIA with 14 made field goals, while also scoring 8.5 points a game and ranked second among all kickers in the country. He also finished seventh in total scoring among kickers (85) and eighth in field goal percentage (82.4). - On October 1, 2016, against Faulkner University, Bates compiled 15 points for Campbellsville, which tied the program record for points in a game by a kicker.

DEFENSE READY TO POUNCE

- After struggling in 2016, the defense is looking to rebound during the upcoming 2017 campaign. - Justin Manning is slated to anchor the defense in his second season on the field. Manning was named the Mid-South Conference West Division Defensive Freshman of the Year after finishing second in the MSC in tackles per game with 10.6 per contest. - Manning also broke a single-game record in total tackles with 22 against Cumberland University on October 26. - Joining Manning in the linebacking group, are three seniors and three

juniors returning from the 2016 squad. - The secondary features a young core for the upcoming season with just one senior and two juniors on the roster. - On the front line of the defense, no seniors are the on roster and a trio of juniors are returning this season.

THE 2017 SEASON

- The Campbellsville University football program is set to embark on its 30th year of varsity competition after the program was reinstated in 1987 at then Campbellsville College. Over the first 29 years of the program, the Tigers have compiled an overall record of 147-163-1. - Campbellsville has competed in the Mid-South Conference (which also began in 1987) since the program was reborn. In its conference contests, the Tigers have gone 92-89-1 and captured four Mid-South Conference titles. - On the national stage, Campbellsville has appeared in the NAIA Football Championship Series four times going 1-4 all-time. The Tigers made it to the NCCAA Victory Bowl twice and captured the championship in 2011. Campbellsville rounds out its postseason history with an appearance in the 2000 KWTO Bowl.

READY TO REBOUND

- The Tigers struggled in 2016 going 2-8 overall and 0-5 in the MSC West Division, but Campbellsville is ready to rebound in 2017 with experienced position groups on both sides of the ball. - On offense, a trio of senior wide receivers are set to take on larger roles in the passing game, while senior running backs Wade Holtsclaw and Chantz Goodman are ready to rejoin Hunter Brown in the backfield. - The Campbellsville defense has key returners at all three levels, led by the reigning MSC Freshman Defender of the Year Justin Manning.

THE 2017 SEASON

UNCHARTERED TERRITORY

- With the new alignment of the MidSouth Conference and having 20 teams spread out over three divisions, Campbellsville is set to encounter some new opponents. - Of the first four games this season, the Tigers will face three opponents (Point University, Warner University and Ave Maria University) for the first time in program history. All three contests come in consecutive weeks in September. - Campbellsville also faced just five of its opponents in 2016, and this season is the first time the Tigers face Cincinnati Christian University on the road. Campbellsville is slated to face both Georgetown College and Kentucky Christian University for the first time since 2014. It is the first time the Tigers have battled each other since CU’s upset win over No. 3 Georgetown on Homecoming. - The Tigers are set to begin its first season in the rebranded Mid-South Conference Bluegrass Division.

NEW FACES ON THE SIDELINE

- This season, the Tigers welcome two new faces to the coaching staff in Vincent Brown and Eugene Crosby. - Brown is set to coach the linebackers this season, where he inherits an experienced core of linebackers. - Crosby is the only new coach on the offensive side of the ball, where he is set to work with the most experienced group on the field who compiled 34 starts last season, in the Tiger offensive line.

and Wade Holtsclaw – who were the second and fourth leading receivers for Campbellsville in 2016 – will also play a key part in the passing game again this season. The backfield duo compiled a total of 712 receiving yards in the 2016 season

- In 2016, Georgetown shared the MSC East Division title after going 5-1 in the division. Lindsey Wilson finished second in the MSC West last season and moved onto the NAIA Football Championship Series Quarterfinals. - Bethel started 2016 7-0, but dropped its final four games of the year and went 1-4 in the West Division. Cumberland finished just under .500 last year going 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the MSC West. - Kentucky Christian went 3-8 and 3-3 in the MSC East Division. The Knights were 0-7 to start the season but picked three wins over its final four games. - Cincinnati Christian completed its first season of competition in 2016 and it went 0-11 and 0-6 in the East Division. - Lindsey Wilson has been picked as the preseason favorite after earning 36 total points and six of the seven firstplace votes in the preseason conference poll. Georgetown finished second in the poll with the final first-place vote and 30 points. FOOTBALL

New Era of Mid-South Conference Football Begins After announcing the largest football conference in America during spring 2015, the Mid-South Conference is set to kick off its 20-team, three-division football conference during the 2017 season. This new conference alignment merges the current MSC football members with six members of The Sun Conference. St. Andrews University is set to begin its football program during the upcoming season. With all three divisions having at least six teams, the division champion is awarded an automatic berth into the NAIA Football Championship Series -- if they finish the regular season ranked in the top 20 of the NAIA Football Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. Each of the three divisions holds divisional names distinct to its geographic region with the Bluegrass Division, Appalachian Division and Sun Division. Campbellsville University is set to be one of seven teams in the Bluegrass Division this season.

Bluegrass Division: Bethel University, Campbellsville University, Cincinnati Christian University, Cumberland University, Georgetown College, Kentucky Christian University and Lindsey Wilson College. Appalachian Division: Bluefield College, University of the Cumberlands, Point University, University of Pikeville, Reinhardt University, St. Andrews University and Union College. Sun Division: Ave Maria University, Edward Waters College, Faulkner University, Southeastern University, Warner University and Webber International University.

MID-SOUTH CONFERENCE

The new Mid-South Conference divisions and teams are:

Each team within the Mid-South Conference will face each divisional opponent one time while facing two members (one at home and one on the road) from each of the two remaining divisions in the MSC. This season, Campbellsville is slated to face Pikeville and Point from the Appalachian Division, while facing Warner and Ave Maria from the Sun Division. The Tigers start the season at home against Pikeville on August 24 at 7 p.m., before traveling to West Point, Georgia to face Point on September 2 at 1:30 p.m. Campbellsville then returns home on September 9 to take on Warner at noon. The Tigers travel to Florida to battle Ave Maria on September 16 at 10 a.m. to finish off its non-divisional schedule. After a bye week, Campbellsville begins it Bluegrass Division slate at Bethel on September 30 at 2:30 p.m. The Tigers are then back at home for the first time in a month to take on Kentucky Christian at 7 p.m. on October 7. On October 14, Campbellsville is back on the road at Cincinnati Christian for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff. The second bye week of the season comes in mid-October, just before the Tigers face Georgetown at home on October 28 for Homecoming at 2 p.m. Campbellsville wraps up its home schedule for the 2017 season on November 4 at 1:30 p.m. against Cumberland. The Tigers conclude the regular season on November 11 against Lindsey Wilson on the road in the Battle of Highway 55, starting at 2:30 p.m.
