LIONEL SABATTÉ

Cuturi Gallery is a new generation art gallery founded on the belief that art should be empowering and meaningful for everyone. A curator of change and a custodian of artistic diversity, Cuturi Gallery is a challenger of vested interests and of the status quo, pushing the boundaries of how galleries operate. The gallery connects broad audiences to high-quality art by diverse talents that speaks to the heart and tells the story of an undiscovered generation of aspiring artists that will have the art world aching for more. Diminishing aristocratic traditions and providing transparency in an art world that is at times daunting, Cuturi Gallery presents an inclusive and democratised art ecosystem which fosters greater collaboration, understanding and appreciation of art amongst artists, collectors and the industry at large.

It is with great pleasure, that I welcome Lionel Sabatté again to Singapore. After a very successful first exhibition in November 2018, Lionel will kick-start our exciting 2020 program under Cuturi Gallery. He is today, one of the most promising talents of the French contemporary art scene, and we are astonished by his year on year progression and success. Just recently he was awarded the 2019 painting award by the prestigious academy of fine arts in France. His time in Singapore will be shared with Art Encounters – a residency program in which Lionel will build three monumental sculptures made of concrete on Orchard Road, between the 12 and 16 of January. I am honoured to act as patron of such a great initiative under Art Outreach – a fantastic visual art education charity to promote art to children, parents and the broader public. Elemental Beings is a continuity of Mind over Matter – Lionel’s first exhibition in Singapore. The exhibition will present Lionel’s latest paintings, oxidised drawings, bronze and concrete sculptures, which will pay homage to the Natural Elements. For instance, with Fire, his bronze creatures come to life. With Air, the technique of oxidation is used in the process of creating his drawings. Earth and Water are represented through his cement mix; the base of his concrete bestiary. Lionel’s intention is to make us reflect on our relationship with the living world and the environment that surrounds us. From each of these elements and creatures that are born from them, is a message for each of us. Concrete as a material has played an important role in the development of human civilisation. To Lionel it is an analogy of change and evolution. Through the oxidised drawings of birds and felines, Lionel emphasises the relevance of oxygen for the survival of humans, and hence creates an awareness on the air we breathe every day. Fire, is the most basic energy source, and has always played an important role in our evolution. From wood, to coal or oil, we burn fuel to power through our existence. Lionel’s fragile bronze birds are a reminder of the impact we humans have on our natural world, and the responsibility we have in maintaining it. The exhibition will open on Friday 17th of January and will last until the 23rd of February. I invite you all to enter Lionel’s natural world, and be enchanted by his creatures and their relationship to the world we live in.
