Quentin Garel: Anima Artificialis

Page 1

ANIMA ARTIFICIALIS We are pleased to present you Quentin Garel: Anima Artificialis – the artist’s first solo exhibition in Asia. It comprises some of his latest creations, including an exclusive sculpture made for Singapore: The mask of Bullmastiff – his first ever Dog sculpture, as a tribute to this year’s animal of the Chinese Zodiac. Through his sculptures, Quentin Garel (b. Paris, 1975) explores the animal kingdom. For him, “animals have an infinite number of shapes. Every animal I represent, is a technical challenge, which allows me to constantly surpass my skills as a sculptor”. Garel adds: “every angle, every craft, every skill has to be perfect. Anything weaker, the viewer will not be convinced”. One can find a variety of animals such as ostriches, gorillas and camels, but also skulls from ancient animals such as the Saber-tooth tiger. Anima Artificialis, a latin expression which translates to artificial life, is the artist’s never-ending dynamic between truth and illusion. Amidst the exhibition stands the Elephant II, an African elephant head mounted against the wall which appears to be entering the room. With a hint of entertainment, each animal carries in themselves a unique passion. As seen in Ostrich III, a curious ostrich peeks out from the wall. Garel teases the viewers with a promise of its body hiding behind the wall. Quentin Garel is a master of disguise by hiding away the identity of his sculptural material from its viewers. So seamless is his craft that rarely would one ever suspect that these ‘wood’ animal sculptures are in fact cast out of bronze. The artist distorts his viewers’ perception further in a double-illusion twist through his animal skulls made of bronze. Viewed from afar, the Saber-tooth tiger sculpture is identical to the fossilized skeletons found in a natural history museum. Yet looking closer, details of wood texture embellished onto the skull reminds us that it is perhaps carved out of wood. Only to eventually discover the material’s true bronze identity. In 2016, this series was exhibited in the National Museum of Natural History in Paris, France. Also on display will be Quentin Garel’s two large charcoal drawings depicting several animals in the current exhibition.
