MIND over MATTER A LIONEL SABATTÉ SOLO EXHIBITION “We are all moving in an encompassing universe, interactions, exchanges of energy. Matter or form is an illusion, a useful way to characterise the world.” Lionel Sabatté We are honoured to present Lionel Sabatté’s first solo exhibition in Asia and Singapore: MIND over MATTER. It is a showcase of the artist’s latest creations in painting and sculpture through his use and exploration of found materials which are often regarded as society’s remnants. Lionel Sabatte’s work put forward the purity and complexity of matter to achieve intricate and often mysterious art pieces. He explores both the 2D and the 3D world, taking his audience into a journey of self-reflection and wonder. The matter is his medium, but the art lies in his mind. In his sculptures, new identities emerge through discarded materials. The tea leaves from China take on new animalistic forms, gathering themselves into a majestic unicorn. A gentle rat spontaneously emerges out of collected dust from Paris metro stations. Above all, human-remains such as clipped nails and shed skin are re-birthed into miniature human-like creatures floating across stones. In his paintings, Sabatté explores the chemistry between various mediums and minerals to enliven the fluidity within the layers. This intermingling reactions on canvas go on to become unknown forms of life within the artist’s realm. Therefore be it in his paintings or sculptures, his works divulge into his mastery of materials to raise the question of existence along an evolutionary scale. We hope everyone can enjoy this showcase of Sabatté’s latest creations in painting and sculpture, through his exploration of society’s remnants.
