A NEW SCHOOL IN VIALE SARCA Community | Connect | Contrast

Designing a school is an exciting challenge for every architect. It is a project that everyone can relate to with a very personal design process that has you reflecting on your past memories. Here we decided to have a modern approach to schooling, with the intentions of not only providing better spaces for students but also creating a social hub for the community before and after school hours. The design for the middle school on Viale Sarca started from an in-depth analysis of the context and a consideration of the pre-existing school. The masterplan emerged from the establishment of clear alignments with the neighboring nursery and plot boundaries. The plot has an extensive green area and is built adjacent to a busy road. As a result, the school was designed with an introverted character where all the classrooms look towards the beautiful gardens rather than the noisy neighbourhood that envelops the plot. The fundamental element that speaks for the entire school is the sunken piazza. It connects all 3 buildings together and gives the school a very urban character. It is envisioned as a space where students can play and relax during their breaks, but also serves as the primary circulation between the more public ground floor functions of the different buildings. The buildings are erected around the piazza in such a way as to contrast and compliment each other. The low, heavy building facing the public park is contrasted by the tall, light classroom buildings. The tall buildings are enveloped with a translucent façade that, in the evening, acts as a lantern for the neighbourhood attracting both visitors and passersby.

GARDEN FOR AN ARTIST Layers | Simplification | Temporary

The Garden for an Artist presents itself as a redefinition of temporary living. For this project we were tasked with creating a tiny, transportable dwelling unit of maximum 20m². The dwelling was to be situated in the abandoned garden of Villa Panza in Varese. The vision behind the project was creating a space that can be inhabited by an artist during their stay at the villa, and analogously act as a contemporary exhibition for the villa’s visitors. Our initial thought process, when tasked with designing a tiny living unit, was the complete simplification of function. We considered the essential needs of an artist, and we organized them into 5 fundamental spaces: Workspace, Kitchen, Bathroom, Shower, Bedroom. Then we took these units and both functionally and spatially reduced them to a minimum. From here, rather than putting all these functions under a single roof, we decided to distribute them around the garden giving each space a strip with a corresponding floor tiling. Accordingly, we delimited these strips on both sides through the use of curtains that provide privacy when the residence is in use. The curtains, through a series of layers, create a path for the artist and visitors to meander through, but also allow for a functional hierarchy from participatory to solitary.

SAN SIRO INFOPOINT

The San Siro Infopoint is a small project related to the larger San Siro urban regeneration plan developed by Hines Real Estate Investment. The project infopoint is to be constructed within the horse racing hippodrome, namely the trotto area where the horses used to warm up before races. Through a careful investigation of San Siro, the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect was noted in the area. To mitigate this effect, our design was centered around creating an Oasis within the trotto track. The track embraces the Oasis and encloses the old stable building and infopoint pavilion. The infopoint is a circular wooden construction characterized by flowing curves. To promote movement through the pavilion and around the micro-forest, the pavilion itself was built with the intention of not having any conventional corners. In this way the users feel the necessary urge to move around and explore the project site, and to repose in the shade of the Oasis trees.

GORLA COMMUNITY CENTER Social | Multi-layered | Permeable
Architectural Design Studio 2 Politecnico di Milano
Professors:
Cassandra Cozza, Virginio Quaglini
Team:
Daria Baldina, Sarp Tascioglu, Ruiyang Wen, Maksim Cuturilo
Prior to designing the Gorla Community Center, a wide array of analyses was carried out in order to investigate and understand the growing area of Gorla. Through our investigation we noted a large multiethnic population with many different age categories. Our vision was to create a social hub that would bring all these different people together under one roof. The Gorla Community Center was designed as a hybrid mixed-use building, replacing the old Mercato Gorla in Milan. The building includes a large cafeteria and meeting hall, recreation spaces, administration, workshop, exhibition room, study and reading rooms, as well as a 2 large terraces. The building program utilizes three floor slabs that fill the site. These slabs are cut along the middle axis, and displaced in section to create six half-levels, each housing a different function. The structural displacement allows each floor to face two other floors which are met in the middle by a central glass wall. This wall creates a physical barrier but maintains a visual connection between the different spaces in the building. The large multi-use spaces in the Community Center are accessed by a central circulating core that can be opened or closed depending on the time of day and needs of the users. Ultimately, the building is alive 24/7 due to its multi-layered organization and permeable pilotis ground floor that is open to the public even when the building is closed.
