Welcome The School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Automotive Engineering enjoys a global reputation for excellent teaching, outstanding student experience and exciting research. In particular, our innovative Activity-Led Learning (ALL) approach is internationally recognised. This has shaped the unique culture of our forwardfacing Faculty of Engineering, Environment and Computing, with its inspirational ÂŁ50M state-of-the-art building with modern equipment and student facilities. We are focused on preparing our students for their first professional position and future careers. Our research expertise ranges from Metrology, Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) to Multi Phase Fluid Flow Systems for oil and gas extraction and Human Factors in Aviation.
Many of our courses within the School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Automotive Engineering are formally recognised by professional accrediting bodies. Accredited courses have been reviewed and tested by the approved professional bodies to ensure they reach a set standard.
Our annual summer research internship programme provides further opportunities for shortlisted students to work closely with leading researchers on existing and new research projects. The programme supports students in gaining invaluable experience in a research environment while getting paid.

This was a remarkable opportunity to put theory into practice and learn from and network with professionals. There is something quite satisfying about completing two years of study, culminating in 7 days’ worth of intensive practical experience of those same areas.
Supporting our students We have invested over £50 million in a multifunctional teaching and research building that supports hands-on learning. Laboratories and workshops are equipped to commercial and industrial standards and are available to students both in and out of class time. Theta Centre If you need any additional academic support with anything related to your course during your studies you can visit the Theta Centre for a drop-in session on the ground floor of the Faculty’s Engineering, Environment and Computing Building. Mathematics Support Centre The University’s Mathematics and Statistics Support Centre (SIGMA) is an award-winning service available to all students. Students can drop into the Centre for expert one-to-one help with their mathematics and statistics problems on any day in term time.

Aerospace Engineering
Course information Aerospace Systems Engineering BEng (Hons) UCAS code: H410 www.coventry.ac.uk/ug/H410 Aerospace Technology BEng (Hons) UCAS code: H402 www.coventry.ac.uk/ug/H402 3 years full-time or 4 years sandwich (study abroad/work placement) Overview Did you know that the Airbus A380, Boeing Dreamliner and Eurofighter Typhoon each had key mechanical and electrical systems designed and developed here in this country? The UK is also one of a few countries in the world with the resources to design and manufacture advanced helicopters. The Aerospace Systems Engineering course is designed to provide the vital skills required to work as a knowledgeable and skilled engineer in the aerospace industry. The Aerospace Technology course is designed to provide you with the opportunity to learn the vital skills required to join the teams of aerospace systems engineers designing and developing systems for the next generation of aircraft. Taught by staff with a wealth of industry experience, you will have the opportunity to work with industry standard software and have access to our High-Performance Engineering Centre. Our facilities include flight simulation systems, a modified, vertical take-off Harrier Jet, a 1/5th scale wind tunnel designed by the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One team, and a suite of CNC machining cells. Our suite of Mechanical Engineering courses are ranked 7th in the UK by the Guardian University Guide 2019.

International experiences You will be encouraged to undertake a placement year or study year abroad after your second year of study (subject to application and availability). Previously, students have studied at: • GKN Aerospace in Munich, Germany • Bertrandt in Hamburg, Germany • Airbus in Toulouse, France We have traditionally organised a range of foreign field trips and, as part of a new partnership deal with Emirates Aviation University, our students recently had the chance to visit the Emirates Maintenance Centre and explore Dubai, which provided a unique opportunity to experience Middle Eastern culture, the modern architecture of Dubai, the climate, amazing food and interact with other multi-ethnic university students studying in Dubai (additional costs may apply). Possible careers for graduates After the United States, the UK has the second largest aerospace industry in the world, employing around 230,000 people in over 3,000 companies, including BAE Systems, GKN and Rolls-Royce, and a range of international companies with operations in the UK, such as Airbus, Cobham, AgustaWestland, Finmeccanica, Thales, Boeing and Bombardier. These courses aim to produce graduates with the skills to become successful detail-design engineers and engineering managers, both in aerospace and the wider engineering context, in fields such as aircraft and components design and manufacture, maintenance and testing, propulsion systems, flight simulation, aviation, avionics, patent engineering, financial services and many more. In our ever-changing world, mechanical engineers develop new and differing uses for technologies and materials that improve the mechanical operation of equipment and devices used in anything from food to oil production or from international construction projects to the design of toys. With sales of £9 billion in the UK alone, the motorsport industry is a dynamic, highly competitive industry reliant on the skill and expertise of engineers to optimise all aspects of the design, build and testing of racing cars and bikes. Industry-related projects will give you a feel of what the demands and expectations will be in the workplace, as well as enabling you to practice and apply your skills to real engineering projects. You will also gain practical, hands-on experience in preparing, running and analysing results from experimental testing and numerical analysis. You will gain experience using relevant software and CNC/rapid prototyping facilities and have access to our Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering and our HighPerformance Engineering Centre, where facilities include test cells, simulators including our new Cruden F1 simulator, laboratories and a wind tunnel designed and supplied by the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One team. The technical content is regularly reviewed and updated to reflect what is currently important and in demand in industry. A national skills shortage and Government push to promote the STEM agenda also means that mechanical engineers are among the most sought-after and highly paid professionals in UK business. Aviation Management

It is designed for those potentially seeking a career in some aspect of the management of airlines, airports or air transport services. We offer a highly immersive experience featuring industry placement opportunities and guest lectures, previously from airline CEOs, airline start-up gurus and other senior experts. As well as exciting industry field trips overseas, previously to Hong Kong, Canada and the UAE, within the UK past students have visited the Monarch Airlines headquarters at Luton Airport, Birmingham Airport, Heathrow Airport, DHL at East Midlands, Monarch Engineering, the National Air Traffic Services, and many others. You’ll have opportunities to access our cutting-edge educational and industry simulation software and aviation data resources, unique to Coventry at undergraduate level. You will also have access to our extensive media library of aviation-specific video and audio material on topical subjects.

International experiences As part of the ‘Global Experience in Aviation Management’ Add+vantage module, a group of twenty second year students recently undertook a week-long overseas field trip to Hong Kong visiting its many local industry players, including Cathay Pacific, DHL Hong Kong, Dragonair, and Avesco, Hong Kong’s security provider. Students have also visited Montreal with hosted visits to Aéroports de Montreal, ACI (Airports Council International), Air Canada, Air Transat, Bombardier’s Challenger Facility, IATA, ICAO and Transport Canada together with a visit to the Canada Aviation and Space Museum. Possible careers for graduates The aviation industry is booming, with passengers forecast to more than double in the next 18 years. This course aims to prepare you for a wide range of career options within the aviation industry either in the UK or overseas – from airline and airport management to air transport consultancy, roles with industry suppliers and manufacturers or in international logistics. Manufacturing Engineering
Course information Manufacturing Engineering BEng (Hons)* UCAS code: H700 www.coventry.ac.uk/ug/H700 *MEng progression option available 3 years full-time or 4 years sandwich (study abroad/work placement) Overview This integrated Master’s course has been designed and delivered in partnership with Unipart Manufacturing Group as part of a £32 million collaborative project to develop the next generation of highly skilled, specialist engineers for the UK’s high-value manufacturing sector. Your studies will be split between our £50m Engineering, Environment and Computing Building and the Institute for Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (AME), based at Unipart’s Coventry site. This ‘Faculty on the Factory Floor’ allows you to experience technology on the manufacturing front line, including robotic automation, forming, joining, analysis and simulation, metrology and product verification technology. Taught modules are applied immediately in a real factory and supplemented by continual live experiences of how things are manufactured in real time.
International experiences You will have the opportunity to participate in field trips abroad, which have recently included trips to Poland, Bulgaria, China, Belgium and the USA (subject to application and additional costs). Possible careers for graduates Manufacturing is predicted to dominate innovation strategies for the next decade with companies desperate to capitalise on robotics/cobotics, intelligent systems, big data, analytics and more. Pay is not only increasing, but salaries are also higher on average than in other areas – at around £31K for manufacturing compared with £27K for services sectors (ONS). Our partnership with the Unipart Manufacturing Group ensures this course is highly vocational in nature, designed to produce ‘industry ready’ graduates, who are well prepared for their first role in industry. This course provides a route into many careers with the global engineering industry, including: • Manufacturing • Project or process engineering • Process planning • Scheduling and control • Logistics • Supply chain management
