Remembering Rick Riehl

Former CUW athletic administrator influential to many

Concordia University Wisconsin lost former athletic administrator Rick Riehl on November 29 after battling Cruetzfeldt-Jakob disease. He was 67.

years prior to his retirement in June. Preceding his time at CUW he was a teacher and basketball coach at West Bend East High School for 32 years.

Riehl was the forefather of the Department of Athletic Communications at CUW, helping start the Falcon Athletic Network broadcasting nearly every home event via video and audio. He was also instrumental in the transition away from a .edu website to what is now CUWFalcons.com.

“Rick is the reason why I am coaching at CUW and he has supported me throughout my coaching career,” CUW women’s basketball head coach and associate athletic director Stacey Brunner-Jones said. “He has always been there to listen to me when I needed him, give guidance on issues on and off the court and helped shape me into the coach I am today. I will never be able to tell him how much I appreciate and love him.”

He was the first full-time Sports Information Director at CUW and held the position for 10 years before moving to the Advancement Office for two
