>>> TODAY’S STORYLINES >>> • LAST TIME OUT FOR CUW: The Falcons earned a close, hard-fought, 15-7 victory at Rockford last Saturday. In a game where yards were hard to come by, CUW outgained Rockford 383-233, with 257 of those coming through the air via quarterback Aaron Nixon. The Falcons also received 103 yards on the ground from running back Andrew Gatz. CUW jumped out to an early 6-0 lead thanks to a 29 yard touchdown pass from Nixon to wide receiver Adam Brown. However, the Falcons found themselves down to the Regents 7-6 at halftime, but were able to pitch a second half defensive shutout. Following a third quarter touchdown reception by wide receiver Derrick Estfan, defensive end Kevin Kern forced a safety midway through the fourth quarter, giving CUW the momentum to close out the victory. • LAST TIME OUT FOR LAKELAND: The Muskies overcame Aurora in a wild double overtime shootout last Saturday. In the 47-40 victory, Lakeland tallied 444 yards of total offense and seven touchdowns. Despite only rushing for 81 yards, the Muskies mustered four rushing scores, all by quarterback Michael Whitley. The gunslinger also passed for 363 yards and three touchdowns to account for each of Lakeland’s seven offensive scores. Michael Esiobu hauled in eight passes for 141 yards and a touchdown. Kezlow Smith also caught two touchdown passes in the win. The Muskies were propelled to victory by a defensive fourth-and-goal stand on the 1-yard line in the first overtime and overcame six turnovers. • KEY PLAYERS TO WATCH FOR CUW: The wide receiver group has been hit with the injury bug this season, but that doesn’t bother them. Over the seven games this season five different pass catchers have led the Falcons in receiving yards. Moreso, on average at least three receivers are hauling in four or more passes for a balanced passing attack. Derrick Estfan leads the team with 42 receptions, while Adedeji Giwa has a team-best 352 receiving yards. Kevin Folker has caught a team-high four touchdowns. • KEY PLAYER TO WATCH FOR LAKELAND: Quarterback Michael Whitley has been the driving force behind the Muskies offense. He has accounted for 2,522 total offensive yards or 88.1 percent of the team’s offensive output. Whitley has four 300-plus yard passing games this season and has thrown for 801 yards in the past two contests. He has 21 passing touchdowns, to go along with 11 rushing scores and 346 yards. • MATCHUP TO WATCH: Which team plays correctly in the eyes of the officials will have an edge today. The Falcons and Muskies enter as the two most penalized teams in the NACC. Each has been flagged 34 times during conference games, but CUW has played four games compared to Lakeland’s three games. The Falcons have been called for seven or more penalties in five-straight games and the Muskies have been called for double-digit penalties four times this season. • WHAT IS AT STAKE: For Lakeland a chance to stay undefeated and atop the NACC standings, while CUW can join the party at the top of the standings. The Muskies enter with a 3-0 NACC record and on a fourgame winning streak, whereas the Falcons are 3-1 in league play and won three of the last four games.

NUMBERS TO KNOW

• 24: This is the 24th annual Cheese Bowl game, which dates back to the 1992 season. The Falcons won the inaugural Cheese Bowl matchup with a 32-7 victory in Mequon. • 8-3: CUW holds an 8-3 advantage during Cheese Bowl matchup in Mequon. The Falcons have won the last two matchups inside Tomasini Stadium by a combined score of 73-51. • 4: Aaron Nixon ranks fourth nationally, averaging 27.4 completions per game. KEY NOTES TO CONSIDER

• The Falcons enter today’s Cheese Bowl matchup with a 14-9 advantage in the traveling trophy series. CUW dropped a 27-10 game at Lakeland on November 8 of last season. Prior to that the teams split the previous six games against each other. The Falcons hold a 671-516 points advantage in the last 23 games between the two rivals. • Today will be a battle between the top two punters in the NACC. The Falcons’ Jacob Mason leads the league with a 43.7 average on 23 punts and the Muskies’ Levi Barske is averaging 40.2 on 17 punts. Each has boomed a punt over 60 yards and they have combined for nine punts inside the 20-yard line. • CUW’s quarterback and wide receivers will have to be on the same page today because the Muskies defense has intercepted 12 passes this season and batted down 39. Lakeland’s Christopher Dickson and Dajuan Darling have 12 and 11 passes defended, respectively, while a trio of Muskies have picked off three pass attempts.

Injuries are going to happen in the game of football and that is the reality of playing the sport. In the end, it is a matter of the severity of the injury and the rehabilitation time to get healthy and back on the field. CUW has faced a countless number of injuries that have affected the team. Student-athletes have missed practices and at times games, but the worst of the injuries have season-ending results. The Falcons have faced their fair share of adversity since training camp in August and, thankfully, they have a strong athletic training staff; one that helps them tackle adversity when it hits throughout the season. Angi Steffen serves as the Director of Sports Medicine, as well as the Head Athletic Trainer for the football program. She, along with a staff that features four other full-time athletic trainers, four graduate assistant athletic trainers and numerous athletic training students, helps make sure all the Falcon athletic programs are receiving the best care possible. Steffen and her staff work with the football team on a daily basis and they have certainly been busy this season. The Falcons have been riddled with injuries and 13 players have gone down with season-ending injuries, which has forced to team to start 40 different players through seven games. Now, those 13 season-ending injuries are just a fraction of the bruises, sprains and other setbacks the football program has dealt with throughout the past three months. No player makes it through a football season without some sort of setback, something that would require attention from the athletic trainers. Steffen and her staff make sure they balance how to treat the season-ending injuries versus the active players who require attention as well. “We reserve our afternoon treatment sessions for the active roster,” Steffen said when referring to the balance of handling all injuries. “That time is used to get the players ready for practice; perform evaluations, treatments, rehabilitation and other things.” Finding a balance and having a strong lead athletic trainer, such as Steffen, are two key things for the Falcons to stay as healthy as possible throughout the 2015 campaign. However, another important aspect not to be forgotten are those helping with the program. From the fulltime staff to graduate assistants to athletic training students, the Falcons are fortunate to have a large staff of medical professionals working with all of their teams.

“Without our athletic training students, I would lose my mind and our student-athletes wouldn’t receive the incredible care that they do,” said Steffen. “The educational program at CUW is an invaluable asset to our student-athletes and athletic programs.” The athletic training program certainly is valuable to the athletic teams on campus, but it is just as valuable to the students who go through it. Not only do they receive a difficult academic workload, but they also gain incredible experience working with teams and coaches. Students who study at CUW earn experience that can help them land jobs down the road and they can also graduate from CUW with a Master’s Degree in five years, which is unrivaled by most programs across the country. “Experience and feedback are really what make our students grow and help us mentor them,” said Steffen. “We have such a wide variety of athletic teams here at CUW that our staff and students get so much exposure to different sports and the different injuries that each presents.” Of course, the experience the athletic training staff receives can really only be beneficial when working in an athletic department that features a dependable model across all facets. Unfortunately, it is not always that case at all institutions; but athletic trainers, coaches, student-athletes and everyone involved must understand their role to make for one cohesive working unit. “Our athletic department at CUW is something to be proud about,” Steffen said. “There is no divide between the athletic department and the athletic training department. We understand what a coach’s role is and they understand ours and that is the only way to run a successful program.” The Falcons certainly have many successful athletic teams; well in reality they have success because of the athletic training program and their ability to keep student-athletes healthy and playing day-in and day-out. The on-field success for many of the CUW teams can’t be overlooked. What, unfortunately is often overlooked is some of the reasons for that on-field success. The athletic training staff is most often unnoticed because of their work behind the scenes and they are often only seen when running on the field to attend to an injured play. However, CUW athletic trainers are more important than most people know and they need to be commended for giving student-athletes the ability to overcome an injury and help the team put another check in the win column.
