The Curious World of Soils with Dr Samantha Grover Have you ever wondered what happens in the earth underneath us? James has, and he wants to learn more about soil. In Exploring Soils: A Hidden World Underground, James discovers that soil is not just dirt for digging in. Written by Samantha Grover, a soil scientist and parent, and with engaging illustrations by artist Camille Heisler, Exploring Soils takes you to an underground world filled with activity and discoveries. In this hands-on workshop Andrew Hansen & Jessica Roberts, co-authors of Bab Sharkey and the Animal Mummies: The Weird Beard will take students through a practical workshop on how you can create catchy characters with words and images. Sneaky peek at Inky Inky teen judges will share a behind-the-scenes look at how they arrived at the 2018 Inky Awards Shortlist. The Chronicles of John Flanagan Apprentice yourself to master storyteller John Flanagan whose Ranger’s Apprentice series and Brotherband Chronicles have sold more than fifteen million copies worldwide. John will talk to David Beagley about creating realistic fantasy worlds, engaging characters and the rollercoaster ride of being a top-selling author. Once Upon an Idea with Kate Forsyth

Best-selling author, blogger, reviewer and researcher Dr Kate Forsyth will lead us on a journey from the initial spark of an idea to a finished piece. She will share how her books have grown from the smallest inspiration to her best-selling novels. Fiction from fact Jay Carmichael’s first novel, Ironbark, is a coming-of-age story set in a small town north of Bendigo. Jay was born in Castlemaine, and this story, depicting growing up in country Australia, is also about the pressures and uncertainties of being gay in a rural community. When you have to hide not only who you are, but also how you feel, what does that mean for your sense of self and your potential? Another Day in Paradise: Tour and Discussion

Join a tour of this thought provoking exhibition that explores the art and life of Myuran Sukumaran and his time incarcerated in Bali’s Kerobokan prison. Then contribute questions and comments to a facilitated discussion board exploring the broader issues of redemption and justice. Big Words - Lemn Sissay Discovering poetry when he was a boy saved Lemn Sissay’s life. Writing about his feelings and what happened to him in foster care, using his poems in big, bold ways, led him to a distinguished career and a life of helping people to find that same love of words. He talks to Dan Bendrups about why poetry should be everywhere. Bab Sharkey Revealed with Andrew Hansen & Jessica Roberts Who is Bab Sharkey? Why is the beard weird? How can an animal be a mummy? Illustrator Jessica Roberts and writer Andrew Hansen (they’re a couple, too) will reveal the answers to these perplexing questions when they talk to Chris Kennett about their very first picture book. There’s more to come, so Chris will find out what inspired Jessica and Andrew to set out on their journey with a boy named Bab. Heywire Heywire is the ABC’s powerful platform for young storytellers from regional Australia. In this hands-on workshop ABC producers will share tips and tricks for writing fantastic personal narratives. Students will have the opportunity to enter their stories in the ABC Heywire Competition to have them featured on the ABC and win a trip to the Heywire Regional Youth Summit in Canberra. Growing Up post-truth - Hyeonseo Lee and Zana Fraillon For many young people, the world is now an alien place, where their homeland is no longer an option, but other places seem not to want them. To speak on behalf of those who seek asylum is not simple when there’s so much conflicting information. Jo Lampert asks writers Hyeonseo Lee and Zana Fraillon what the idea “post-truth” means for them and for those who are looking for ways to start a new life. Whose book is it anyway? John Flanagan, Kate Forsyth, Susan Green, Kristin Gill Have you ever wondered how books develop from an initial idea in an author’s head to a published book in your hand? Join this panel of authors, bloggers, publishers and booksellers who have, jointly hundreds of years of experience and anecdotes about how their books came to be. Writers @ Work with Belinda Murrell Belinda Murrell joins TMtS once more to guide students through a series of hands-on writing tasks that will help turn little imaginings about the things they find curious into stories to be proud of. Podding - Podcasting with Kelly Gardiner and Adele Walsh Adele Walsh and Kelly Gardiner host Unladylike, a podcast that talks about women and writing. Their manifesto is no limits, neither to what people write or to why they write. It’s about sharing ideas that might not be heard in the mainstream. Miffy Farquharson talks to these two talented, energetic women, to find out where it started and their advice for wannabe podcasters. Recommended Age: Middle to Senior Secondary, Years 9 - 11 Host: Miffy Farquharson, Woodleigh School

Songlines In this hands on workshop you will have the opportunity to work with one of Australia’s leading writers to begin to craft a song of your own. Who’s Who at TMtS 2018:

Jay Carmichael is a writer and editor. His first novel, Ironbark, released this year, was shortlisted for the Victorian Premier’s Award for an Unpublished Manuscript in 2016. His writing has been published by beyondblue and appeared widely in print and online, including in Overland, The Guardian, SBS, and The Telling Tree project. Jay lives and works in Melbourne.

John Flanagan’s Ranger’s Apprentice and Brotherband adventure series have sold more than fifteen million copies worldwide. His books are available in more than one hundred countries, are regularly on The New York Times bestseller list, and have had multiple award shortlistings and wins in Australia and overseas. John, a former television and advertising writer, lives with his wife in a Sydney beachside suburb.

Kate Forsyth wrote her first novel aged seven & has now sold more than a million books worldwide. Her most recent book, Beauty in Thorns, is a reimagining of ‘Sleeping Beauty’ set amongst the passions and scandals of the Pre-Raphaelites. Kate’s books for children and young adults include the collection of feminist fairy-tale retellings Vasilisa the Wise & Other Tales of Brave Young Women, The Impossible Quest, her fantasy adventure series, which has been optioned for a film; and The Puzzle Ring, named an ‘Unsung Hero’ by international bloggers. Zana Fraillon’s 2016 novel The Bone Sparrow won the ABIA Book of the Year for Older Children, the Readings Young Adult Book Prize and the Amnesty CILIP Honour. It was also shortlisted for many other prestigious awards. The Ones Who Disappeared, Zana’s latest book was a CBCA Book of the Year: Older Readers 2018 Notable. When Zana isn’t reading or writing, she likes to explore the museums and hidden passageways scattered across Melbourne. They provide the same excitement as that moment before opening a new book - preparing to step into the unknown where a whole world of possibilities awaits.

Kelly Gardiner writes historical fiction for readers of all ages. Kelly’s most recent book for adults is Goddess and her latest book for young readers is 1917. Kelly teaches creative writing at La Trobe University a few days a week, and runs writing workshops at schools, libraries, community organisations and festivals.

Kristin Gill has worked in the book industry for more than 30 years. She is currently the Publishing Manager for the Penguin Random House Young Readers Division by day and supporter of her partner’s businesses, Northern Books and The Kids’ Bookshop after hours. Northern Books works in partnership with publishers to bring readers exciting author-based events to both Melbourne and Central Victoria. The Kids’ Bookshop is an online bookstore for parents, schools, libraries and communities, providing specialist children’s book information and sales. Kristin is a keen supporter of The Indigenous Literacy Foundation and was a board member from 2012 – 2016. She is currently their Ambassador Coordinator. Susan Green lives in Central Victoria and is the author of the Verity Sparks series. She’s been an art student, a primary teacher, a radio producer, a youth worker and a cook. Susan has written copy and educational materials for The Wilderness Society and other groups. She’s taught many, many creative writing courses and workshops in community settings. Since 1996 she’s worked in a bookshop, Stonemans Bookroom, in her home town of Castlemaine.

Who’s Who at TMtS 2018:

Dr Samantha Grover is a soil scientist. She and her plant ecologist partner have two young boys who are fascinated by the natural world. Their endless questions and the UNESCO International Year of Soils combined to inspire Dr Grover to create her first picture book, Exploring Soils: A Hidden World Underground, to share the wonder of soils with a wider audience.

Andrew Hansen is a comedian, actor and musician, best known as a member of Australian comedy group The Chaser, whose TV shows include Media Circus, The Hamster Wheel, The Chaser’s War On Everything and CNNNN. He has contributed short stories to Best Australian Comedy Writing and Journey Through Humour. His debut children’s book, Bab Sharkey and the Animal Mummies: The Weird Beard, was released this year. Hyeonseo Lee is a North Korean defector living in Seoul, South Korea. Her memoir, The Girl With Seven Names, was published in 2015 in more than 20 countries. It has become a global bestseller. Over 13 million people have viewed her TED Talk about her life in North Korea, her escape to China and struggle to bring her family to freedom. She recently completed her undergraduate studies in English and Chinese at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies. Hyeonseo spends much of her time speaking about North Korean human rights and North Korean refugee issues. Hyeonseo has written articles for The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Korea Real-Time, The London School of Economics Big Ideas blog, and worked as a student journalist for the South Korean Ministry of Unification. She is currently writing another book with other female North Koreans living in South Korea. Belinda Murrell is a bestselling, internationally published children’s author with a history of writing in her family that spans over 200 years. Her previous titles include four picture books, her fantasy adventure series The Sun Sword trilogy and her seven time-slip adventures, The Locket of Dreams, The Ruby Talisman, The Ivory Rose, The Forgotten Pearl, The River Charm, The Sequin Star, and The Lost Sapphire. These books have been recognised by various awards. For younger readers (aged 6 to 9) Belinda has the popular Lulu Bell series about friends, family and animal adventures growing up in a vet hospital. Her new middle grade series is called Pippa’s Island, about starting a new life on a tropical island, finding your courage and the best group of friends you could wish for. Her sister is bestselling author Kate Forsyth. Katrina Nannestad is an award-winning children’s author responsible for titles such as the new series The Girl, The Dog and The Writer, about family, friendship and finding yourself. Katrina also penned Olive of the Groves which was shortlisted for the 2016 Indie Book Awards, The Girl Who Brought Mischief, winner of the NSW Premier’s Award for Children’s Literature and the Red Dirt Diary series. Another new series, Lottie Perkins for readers aged 5+ is coming in June 2018. Jessica Roberts writes, draws and films stories. She has a Bachelor of Visual Arts and Design, and a Foundation Diploma in film studies. Originally from Kyneton, Victoria, Jessica grew up surrounded by an odd collection of pets including dogs, quails, chickens, sheep, goats, rabbits and a donkey. Her stories often involve animals and she uses her childhood memories of growing up in the country as a bank of ideas for storytelling. She’s now a city slicker living in Sydney. A trip to Egypt in 2009 inspired the idea for her first book, Bab Sharkey and The Animal Mummies: The Weird Beard.

Lemn Sissay is a poet, playwright and occasional broadcaster. He has read poetry everywhere from The Library of Congress in The United States to The University of Addis Ababa, from the Botanic Gardens of Singapore to the sonorous shores of Sri Lanka, from Wembley Football stadium to Maryland Football stadium, from the theatres of Bangalore to the theatres of Dubai, from a literature festival in Bali to a bar stage in Greenland AND Wigan library.
