what i did last week volume 3 What I did last week began as an online exhibition in the week following the declaration of the COVID-19 State of Emergency in Victoria. The aim was to support people in lockdown and encourage arts engagement as a method of supporting mental health. As the program evolved it soon became a platform where people could share their experience of lockdown, via the images they were sharing and the artist statements that accompanied them. To provide a lasting record, as well as a memento for the participating artists, it was decided to publish the work in hard copy. Volume 1 covered the first eight weeks and volume 2 covered the work submitted for weeks 9 to 16. This third volume contains the work submitted for weeks 17 to 24, 14 July to 7 September 2020, and includes 209 images by 79 artists. This period covered the peak of daily cases and deaths in Victoria, it also covered the introduction of a State of Disaster (2 August) and the introduction of the second lockdown (6 August). At the end of this period, on 6 September, the state government released its ‘Roadmap to recovery’, outlining the steps required to ease restrictions later that month.
As with previous volumes, the themes depicted by the artists are varied. Perhaps reflecting the lockdown conditions, the work tends towards interiors, portraits and studies, with a number of artists trying new techniques or materials. There are some landscapes included, however there is a feeling of nostalgia or longing here as quite a few of these were inspired from photographs taken on past holidays. When artists submitted work to What I did last week they only needed to provide (along with an image) their name, a title for their work, the date it was completed and an optional statement to accompany their image. This meant there was limited information about who was participating in this program, so for each volume a survey was sent to the participating artists to fill in the gaps and ask some questions about their COVID-19 experience. For this volume, the responses to this survey showed that people were feeling better, generally, than they were at the end of volume 2, and that their experience was about the same as they had expected. While most people were making more art than usual, this figure was down on previous surveys.

As with previous surveys, the response to the question “Has making art helped you deal with the last 9 weeks?” remained very positive, with a third of respondents giving an answer between 91 and 100 out of 100 (where 0 was “not at all”, 50 was “neutral” and 100 was “very much”). Throughout the COVID-19 period, support for the arts, funding and the general value of the arts became a topic of discussion, both within the arts field and more broadly. In the survey to accompany this volume we asked two new questions: “Did you feel valued for your art by society before lockdown?” and “Have you felt valued for your art by society during lockdown?”. The average responses for both questions were positive (61 for “before” and 67 “during” (where 0 was “not at all”, 50 was “neutral” and 100 was “Yes, definitely”), however while 23% of respondents felt they were less valued and 18% felt no difference, 59% of respondents said they felt more valued during lockdown than prior to lockdown. Finally, participants were asked to share comments about how their art had changed during lockdown; the responses were quite varied, and some can be found elsewhere in this volume. While some people talked about the restrictions they were facing, a number also talked about this time as an opportunity to focus on their art more.

Not being able to exhibit my art, except online or by email to friends, has been inhibiting. Not being able to travel to look for potential subjects has also been restricting. Before COVID-19 I put family/friends before my art, during COVID-19 I have not been able to do that, so my art has taken centre stage. I have found this to be really helpful and plan to keep more time for art in the post COVID-19 world. What I did last week continued for eight more weeks, and the work submitted appears in volume 4. There was also a ‘final’ gallery (volume 5) which encouraged participating artists to reflect on the whole period of this program. In addition to the printed volumes, all the work submitted for What I did last week remains available for viewing online at: www.bendigovenuesandevents.com.au under “Local Arts”.

Jane Ineson Acrobatic Life Model (Graphite) 18 July 2020 COVID-19 has challenged my usual art practice, which is to draw people from life. An online life drawing session removes much vital information about the experience, but it can offer opportunities to make longer drawings of poses that might only be possible for the model to hold for one or two minutes. This was drawn whilst the photo of the model was made available for 30 minutes from The Art Room. The drawing stops in mid process with the timer.

Life drawing has been a lifeblood for me. In a group session the model’s poses often change ten or more times, and the drawing process for each pose concludes on the timer. This has taught me the value of freedom from concern for outcome, and that there is no right or wrong in the process. The most vital drawings happen for me when I let go of preconception and control. This is a warm up drawing from a photo offered for two minutes in an online session at The Art Room.

Dr Michael J Leach Hyperpolypharmacy 15 August 2020
Michael is a poet and epidemiologist at Monash University, Bendigo. He originally trained in pharmacy. Michael’s poems reside in ‘Cordite’, ‘The Australian Journal of Pharmacy’, and elsewhere. This poem was inspired by reflecting on hyperpolypharmacy—the concurrent use of 10+ medications.
Michael Watson Mastercopy of Vermeer’s ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’, 1665 10 August 2020
What better way to improve in technical skill than to study and complete an accurate copy of a masterpiece. Countless hours of measuring and correction brought me to this finished attempt at one of the greatest portraits of all time.

We have this beautiful soft petalled Rock Rose growing in our garden. It’s a delight that Spring is almost here.
Angela Morrissey Mary Magdalene II 17 August 2020
This is an oil painting of Mary Magdalene where Greek Orthodox style meets Expressionism. Mary Magdalene was a resident of Magdala, a town on the southwestern coast of the Sea of Galilee. She became a follower of Jesus after He healed her by casting out seven demons (Luke 8:1-2).

Denyse Dalton Three House Plants (Gouache on paper) 17 August 2020
To keep my creative momentum up during lockdown and remote learning, I needed a simple routine. One element of that routine is a freestyle small painting to be completed each weekday. This one kicked off last week.

Des Lowry Buster’s best friend, Toby 22 August 2020
Buster and Toby went for a walk together in the One Tree Hill reserve almost every morning for ten years until 2018. I wasn’t confident enough that I had the technical skill to tackle his portrait until recently.

A few years ago, I drew “Octopus’s Garden”, after having the Beatles’ song in my head for weeks. “Yellow (& Black) Submarine” came about, in the same way. Medium used was black & yellow ink in pens. You’ve probably guessed that I’m a Richmond fan!

While walking around the Bendigo Swap Meet last November, this old pedal tractor caught my attention so I asked the stall owner if I could take a photo to use for a painting. I don’t think the Swap Meet will be running this year due to COVID-19 so will just have to go through my old photos and reminisce.
Kathryn Harrison Draw from the Imagination 18 August 2020
Judith Jacobs In Lockdown 18 August 2020
Random selection of unrelated objects in a box, in isolation.
I have discovered the joys of doing small online courses. I have completed one called Draw from the Imagination and am about to start another — Biographical cartoons. They are delivered from a variety of South American artists. I love South American art.

Kathryn Stretch No place like home (Acrylic on canvas) 23 August 2020
I painted this for my sister’s birthday, but I can’t be with her until they open the SA border. In the meantime, just like Dorothy, I have been a bit homesick and have come to know that there truly is “no place like home...” To reflect this I painted silver balls (Rundle mall) in the Emerald city and Sturt peas instead of poppies. Perhaps if we click our heels together, this pandemic will be over.

Dr Michael J Leach Hygiene (of the Physical and Sleep Varieties) 17 August 2020
Michael is a poet and epidemiologist at Monash University, Bendigo. His poems reside in ‘Cordite, Medical Journal of Australia’, and elsewhere. This poem stemmed from experimentation with the term ‘deep clean’—a term frequently heard in the media of late.
Milton Long Earings 17 August 2020
These earrings have been commissioned by a family member to match a previously made pendant. They are made of fine silver (999), sterling silver (925), enamel and silver leaf. Fusing the silver leaf onto enamel often results in unpredictable effects, so these enamels are the result of attempt number four!

Peter Fountain Landlines #2 20 August 2020
I spend quite a bit of time riding my unicycle through local bush with a close eye on the earth in front, around and beneath me; much of this land has been drastically reshaped by mining or denuded through cycles of bushfire. The resulting landforms are stark and haunting.

Andre Sardone Bird Feeder Gong 30 August 2020
I like to explore the ways that the local fauna can interact with my artwork. In this version, as these crimson rosellas land on the feeding dish it swings and an internal cog strikes the cylinder resulting in a deep gong, which resonates but doesn’t frighten the birds. Photograph by Bridget Finch showing the beautiful colours of the Australian bush.
Angela Morrissey Spiderman 30 August 2020
I did a drawing of Spiderman, as I believe in the importance of superheroes and how movies like Marvel show us that good can overcome and win over evil. We need more superheroes in real life although our emergency service personnel are our true heroes in these times of crisis!

Andre Sardone Bonnie 6 September 2020
Commissioned by a lady from Echuca who had seen a big red rabbit while on holiday years ago and wanted one. My daughter in Melbourne designed this and I organised the laser cutting, fabrication and powder coating. A great little project that came together well.
Angela Morrissey Female Nude I 5 September 2020

Fr Rob first became a celebrity singer on The X Factor a couple of years ago.
