VETERAN HEROES FLOAT Charlottesville Parks and Recreation is teaming up with the Float Fishermen of Virginia to put together the first Veteran Heroes Float on September 20, 2014. This float is to honor U.S. Military Veterans who have been wounded serving our Country. Our goal is to create a fun & exciting positive outdoor experience by introducing the veterans to experienced boaters that share a love of paddling & the outdoors. Veterans should have the ability get in and out of a canoe, with some assistance if needed, and the ability to sit in a canoe for approximately 4 hours. All participants will be required to wear a life vest for the entirety of the trip. This will be a day trip on the James River from Howardsville, Virginia to Hatton’s Ferry near Scottsville, Virginia. This is a peaceful section of river with a couple of small Class 1-2 ledges. Lunch will be provided at the beginning of the trip. Snacks and drinks will be available throughout the day. There will be time for swimming and stops along the way to chat, relax and stretch. Life vests, paddles, canoes and an experienced paddler will be provided for each veteran. There will be several experienced paddlers with water safety and rescue experience. The Scottsville River Rescue along for added support. We also encourage able-bodied Veterans with paddling experience to join us as well. Further instructions for volunteers and veterans, including specific times, directions, details and recommendations will be provided.
