sounds of summer Join us for an evening of live music, food and fun for the family. Free entry and free food while supplies last. Sponsored by Charlottesville Parks & Recreation and Bama Works. Saturday, June 28th from 6-8pm at Tonsler Park Saturday, August 23rd from 6-8pm at Belmont Park

veteran heroes float (ages: 18+ years) Charlottesville Parks and Recreation is teaming up with the Float Fishermen of Virginia to put together the first Veteran Heroes Float on September 20, 2014. This float is to honor U.S. Military Veterans who have been wounded serving our Country. Our goal is to create a fun & exciting positive outdoor experience by introducing the veterans to experienced boaters that share a love of paddling & the outdoors. Veterans should have the ability get in and out of a canoe, with some assistance if needed, and the ability to sit in a canoe for approximately 4 hours. All participants will be required to wear a life vest for the entirety of the trip. This will be a day trip on the James River from Howardsville, Virginia to Hatton’s Ferry near Scottsville, Virginia. This is a peaceful section of river with a couple of small Class 1-2 ledges. Lunch will be provided at the beginning of the trip. Snacks and drinks will be available throughout the day. There will be time for swimming and stops along the way to chat, relax and stretch. Life vests, paddles, canoes and an experienced paddler will be provided for each veteran. There will be several experienced paddlers with water safety and rescue experience. The Scottsville River Rescue along for added support. We also encourage able-bodied Veterans with paddling experience to join us as well. Further instructions for volunteers and veterans, including specific times, directions, details and recommendations will be provided. Please contact Erica Goode at the number or e-mail below if you are interested in joining us for this event or need further information. A registration form & questionnaire for veterans to complete and return, prior to the event, will be required. goodee@charlottesville.org ACTIVITY#

meadowcreek golf course

40th anniversary Forty years ago there was a shy, oddball boy who loved golf. In those days of no computers, cell phones, video games, ipads, ipods, golf was his sanctuary from the world. He thought about golf incessantly. At school he would draw hole designs in his notebook instead of taking notes. At night he'd practice with a plastic ball in the back yard, then clean his dirty clubs by flashlight in his room. He lived and died with the performances of his heroes, Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Gary Player, and Gene Littler. It was a great day when his father finally finished reading that month's Golf Digest and the boy could squirrel it away to the box in his closet where he kept the rest to be studied and reread over and over again. Like most of Charlottesville's golfers, that boy had first learned to play golf at McCintire Golf Course and then at Keswick, playing 45 or even 54 holes a day during long, lazy, golden summers. His parents would drop him off on their way to work and pick him up at dinner time. Sometime around 1973 something BIG happened in that boy's life. The City Of Charlottesville began construction on a new public nine-hole course on a beautiful tract of farmland just north of town. As it turned out, Pen Park was just within walking distance of the boy's house; about 30 minutes if he went through the Meadowcreek tunnel and then down the train tracks. A golf course within walking distance! A new golf course! A public course at that! In 1974 that boy would skip school more than a few times and walk with a club and a pocket full of Acushnet Club Special golf balls down the railroad tracks

and then up Rio Road to Pen Park. Lo and behold there were bulldozers and dump trucks belching blue diesel smoke out over the sleepy Rivanna River valley, there were workers with rakes and shovels and water trucks and huge land shaping machinery of all kinds. Unfazed, that oddball boy would walk out on the freshly turned red clay, drop his golf balls, and play golf. Early on, he made his own holes, this pile of dirt down the hill to that flat place, etc. He watched the new holes take shape. He saw the struggle that the hilly land presented to the builder as storms washed huge gullies down the middle of the fairways. He was there when the very first blades of planted grass began to green the hills and valleys. Meadowcreek is more than just a golf course. It is the wind in the ancient ash tree beside the clubhouse. It is the imposing stone pillars that guard the front walk like sentinels. Thomas Jefferson's house, Monticello, can be seen from the 16th tee. Everywhere you look are subtle signs of the original plantation, the most beautiful of which being the 200 year old cemetery around which the course respectfully curls. How can one describe in words the meaning of a place? How can a thing actually matter anyway? After all, we are made of stardust, dust to dust, ashes to ashes, and so it goes. Everything is fleeting and immaterial. All too often life has a way of reminding us of that fact. This is not a game. You don't get a second chance. So make it a point to hug a friend. Make sure you tell your loved ones that you love them, every day, every hour if you have to. Some places really do matter. — Story by Mark Wade

veteran heroes float (ages: 18+ years) Charlottesville Parks and Recreation is teaming up with the Float Fishermen of Virginia to put together the first Veteran Heroes Float on September 20, 2014. A registration form & questionnaire for veterans to complete and return, prior to the event, will be required. goodee@charlottesville.org, 970-3572 ACTIVITY#

summer inclusion program Do you have a child with special needs who would benefit from occasional support at camp? Parks and Recreation is a partner in The Summer Inclusion Program. Depending on availability, there may be a mentor to assist with the inclusion of children with special needs at your child's camp. Our mentors are typically college or graduate students who have had experience with special needs children. They are trained to provide simple accomodations, to provide breaks, and to otherwise make adjustments to help children with mild to moderate disabilities in camp. We're sorry; we are not able to provide one-to-one mentors, nor are we able to provide a mentor at every site. If you think your child might have a better experience at a site staffed with a mentor, please contact Sarah Blech at 970-3264.
