Ship’s Serviceman 3rd Class Marvin Conway has worked in the store for more than three years and is now in charge of not only the store but also all retail spaces. “My job is to pretty much make sure the operation

is running smoothly by organizing breakouts and making sure spaces like the store have what it needs,” said Conway. Sailors can look forward to a selection of all new products in the ship store. “Very soon you should expect workout shirts and shorts for both men and women, Ipods, Ipad minis, headphones, tablets, radios, dvd’s, cd’s and much more to come,” said Conway. The store will continue to have a stocked selection of your favorite energy drinks, snacks and necessities too. “We are always trying to put things out on sale, - Continued on page 3 -

As an invaluable member of hose team one for repair locker 7B, his dedication and leadership were instrumental in the locker combating casualties during 40 general quarters exercises. Additionally, he was the lead divisional maintenance person for two damage control work centers during the SKED 3.2 upgrade. He expertly

Sailors who try to beat the crowd waiting in line for the ship store can find it difficult to find the perfect time to go to that is compatible with their work schedule. “The best time to come down is usually after chow, but that is also our time to do breakouts which means by the time we are finished the store is busy again,” said Conway. For Sailors like Information System Technician 1st Class Traci Miller, the store is very convenient. “Everyone definitely needs to have some sort of gee-dunk and stuff for the times they can’t come down to the galley to get food,” said Miller. Checking the Sailors out at the register is Ship’s Serviceman Seaman Terry Howard who takes pride in his job along with the many Sailors he gets

to provide for. “I met a lot of people just from the store alone so that’s always a good part about my job,” said Miller. “So this is a great opportunity for them to help MWR while they get what they need from the ship store.” A percentage of the sales from the ship store are contributed towards MWR. The best part of working in the ship’s store is the positivity the Sailors that work there bring to every customer who walks through the door. “Well we are a big morale builder for the ship so it feels good to put a smile on someone’s face when they see you have something they really want,” said Conway. The ship store is open underway from 0830-1900 and 0830-1430 in port.

A

s Sailors walk through the forward galley of the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68), there’s an aroma of coffee beans in the air as Ship’s Serviceman 3rd Class Justin T. Holt sets up for the day. “I’ve been working at the Starbucks since July 2012,” Holt explains as he grabs a collection of flavored syrups from the cabinet below. “It’s cool to see all these guys’ faces. A lot of people need their coffee.” The line forming up behind the small coffee stand proves this statement to be true. “I come here every morning,” says Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Vladimir Villatavera. “I

usually order a caramel macchiato.” Ship’s Serviceman Seaman Terri S. Johnson has only been working at the Starbucks on board for about a month, but already loves her job. “I think that this actually is the best job I’ve had,” Johnson’s smile widens. “It’s fast-paced, there’s great people, and a great working environment.” Although both Johnson and Holt enjoy their jobs as baristas at Starbucks, neither of them drinks coffee. The line dies down from the morning rush and there are now just a few stragglers looking for their pick-me-up for the day. Johnson admits that the customers might be there for more than just caffeine. “I think it gives them a break to leave their stressful environments and come and talk to us and tell us what they’re doing that day,” says Johnson. “It’s a nice feeling. Originally from Appleton, Wisconsin, she recently became a SAPR representative. “I just started so I haven’t had a real case yet, but I feel if I do I’ll be ready,” said Ly. “I’ve had a lot of experience with people who have gone through these situations; myself and my family members.” One of the reasons Ly became a SAPR victim advocate is because she does not want someone to have to deal with a sexual assault alone. “If you’re not comfortable with coming to any of the SAPR reps, you should go to someone, or anyone,” says Ly. “It’s always better to let someone know rather than hold it inside, whatever is happening.”

AO3 Elyse Blaker A California native, she has recently become credentialed to be a SAPR victim advocate. Blaker wants to be able to be there for people who need it. “We’re here for the victim,” said Blaker. “We’re here to listen to them, help out and support them for any little thing they might need.”
