You really come together as a unit, and get behind one another -Guevara

WEAT BEGINS TO PUDDLE on the nonskid of hangar bay two as the men and women of medical participate in group physical training. Their faces become flush with each push-up and arm-circle as they work together to accomplish a common goal: fitness. “In the Navy, it is very important to maintain a certain level of fitness,” said Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class Marcos Guevara, assistant command fitness leader for Medical Department. “Our department works together to make sure that level is never compromised.” Continued on page 3

Aviation Ordnanceman 3rd Class Chase M. Lilly, a native of St. Louis, was selected as Sailor of the Day, Aug. 28. “It’s a good feeling,” said Lilly. “I feel humbled by it. I’ve worked my butt off.” As an Ordnance team member, his knowledge of handling procedures was crucial in the movement of 250 tons of ordnance in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. His meticulous attention to detail ensured the highest standards for the receipt, issue, and handling of all ammunition, and explosives during deployment 2013. Lilly said he enlisted Aug. 10, 2010 and Commanding Officer Capt. Jeff Ruth

plans to re-enlist at least once more. Additionally, he displayed exceptional initiative as the Assistant Day Check Maintenance Supervisor, responsible for overseeing the completion of 2,357 scheduled and unscheduled maintenance actions on all Armament Weapons Support Equipment. His efforts directly led to a 100 percent Ready For Issue (RFI) status of all ordnance. For anyone else seeking similar recognition, Lilly said, “Keep doing what you’re doing, don’t compromise, be who you are, and do whatever you do to the best of your abilities.”

Continued from page 1 Group training sessions take place every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 11:30 a.m. Each session consists of various exercises used to test the limits of each Sailor involved. “If we don’t push each other, than we are just going through the motions,” said Guevara. “It’s important to push yourself when you work out. The more you push, the easier the workouts become.” Guevara believes the benefits to working out as a cohesive unit far exceeds that of just physical fitness. “You really come together as a unit, and get behind one another,” said Guevara. “Working with each other outside of the office is always a nice change of pace and will help us come together in the long run.” Motivation is always a daunting challenge when it comes to physical fitness, but the members of Medical Department have found a way to overcome such a challenge. “We help encourage each other,” said Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Erin Johnson. “We stay loud through the whole workout in order to push one another.” Johnson outlines a few tips and tricks for those Sailors and Marines on board Nimitz that might

have trouble finding the motivation to train on a regular basis. “Keep it positive, and make sure to provide positive reinforcement through the entirety of the workout,” said Johnson. With motivation acquired, the corpsmen must also work around a hectic schedule that can change in the blink of an eye. Guevara provides a few ways to ensure that time management is not something that will hinder fitness success. “Find the time, even a small amount,” said Guevara. “Consistently working out is an incredible stress reliever and will help you stay fit and energized throughout the day.” Guevara recommends other work centers take up the call to fitness as a group and find the time to train together. “I do think it’s important,” said Guevara. “I find it increases cohesion and production in the work place, while also helping to maintain a consistent level of fitness needed to sustain a career in the Navy.” It is this sense of cohesion and camaraderie that will not only help these Sailors build physical strength and endurance but will also help to strengthen their teamwork, which, on the mighty warship Nimitz, is tradition.

It’s a significantly rare event that two pilots would reach such a career milestone on the same day while serving aboard the same aircraft carrier. A milestone, that both men agree, is the product of hard work, teamwork and dedication. 5
