he Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) NetOps Support Team (NST) conducted network fundamentals training classes from April 21 to 23 to refresh the crew for the Network+ Exam. Network+ is a certification, provided by the Computing Technology Industry Association, a non-profit trade association for the information technology (IT) industry, that is used to measure the

skill of technicians and their understand of network hardware, installation, and troubleshooting. “The certificate it what employers look for,” said Information Systems Technician Seaman Jeffrey London, a Crystal, Minn., native. “You could have multiple degrees, and it won’t matter as much in the IT world.” From day one, the team was eager to jump into the lesson plan. viation Electronics Technician 3rd Class Amanda Hayes from VAW-117, was named as the Sailor of the Day April 27. As a squadron lead plank captain and line division shoot supervisor, she mentored, trained and qualified two plane captains, increasing the work center’s experience by 40 percent. She played a pivotal role in the launch and recovery of three mission key aircraft contributing to more than 50 sorties, 171 flight hours and 100 percent mission completion rate during Nimitz’ SUSTEX. Her record provided the command with the power to complete complex assignments and evolutions.

n Ashland City, Tenn., native, now a Sailor on board the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68), was named as SOD April 29. As maintenance technician for the Reactor Mechanical Division Two Plant, Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class Donald E. Bannister, has hit the ground running. With 15 months on board, he has been the go-to Sailor for high priority corrective maintenance to include nine Class ‘B’ steam valve overhauls, replacement of #21 Motor Driven Fire Pump mechanical seal and more than a dozen carbon steel piping and bilge inspections. “It’s great to receive recognition for the hard work we’ve been doing, as a division and as a whole,” said Bannister.

Sailors take notes during network fundamentals training for Network +.

“We feel this may better assist junior Sailors to begin to understand how to support the network on board,” said Chief Personnel Specialist Eugene Tai, the SPAWAR NST team leader. “Myself and the instructors, [Information Systems Technician 1st Class (IDW/SW) James Jenson and Electronics Technician 2nd Class (SS/SSBN) Eliseo Martinez], are reservists, we have civilian IT jobs, and we’re here to conduct our annual two-week training. It’s meant to last up to five days, but we’ve consolidated it into three.” For the first day, they covered the open system internet model, which is made up of general network basics to help grasp knowledge about

troubleshooting and how switches and routers connect networks together. “It was mostly review, but it was interesting to be instructed by reservists,” said London. “I liked hearing them talk about their Naval experiences on active duty.” Though the team’s visit was short-lived, they gained from their experiences on board as well. “I love being underway,” said Jenson, a network administrator for Special Operations Command Pacific from Boise, Idaho. “This is my first time going out to sea on a training team mission as an instructor. It reinforces the knowledge for me as well.” For the two days following, the team conducted a run-through on protocols, ethernet and wireless networking, internet protocol addressing, subnetting, services and utilities, and password protection. “The information provided in the class helps you understand how the network and troubleshooting works throughout the ship,” said Information Systems Technician Seaman Marco Quintana. “Additionally, Network+ is a good stepping stone if you want to become a network administrator in the civilian sector.” Contact Tai at eugene.tai@cvn68.navy.mil for more information.

Short Circuit By Tina C. Stillions, Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) Public Affairs

“Information Dominance will become a recognized warfare area on par with other traditional warfare areas and is becoming one of our most powerful assets,” said Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR) Chief Engineer Rear Adm. James Rodman during a panel discussion on information and non-kinetic warfare and the growing cyber security threat.

“We need to look at the warfare arena differently,” said Rodman. “We need to know what arrows we have in our quiver and then define those non-kinetic elements so that we can treat them in a more level set environment.” SPAWAR Commander Rear Adm. Patrick Brady echoed Rodman during his follow on keynote address discussing the importance of technical authority in information warfare during the 35th Annual C4ISR Symposium April 23-25 in San Diego. “The value of a unified technical authority is that it helps us identify security gaps in our networks,” said Brady. “It creates better situational awareness, more resilient information technology (IT) architectures and standardized platforms so that we can gain a better understanding of the impact of cyber vulnerabilities on our critical warfighting systems.” To support this cyber imperative and achieve power in an information warfare arena, a greater level of information sharing will be required. Stand by Me The plot of the film [see above title] would’ve been pretty lame if, instead of a group of kids journeying and learning together, it was some guy walking along railroad tracks…alone. Let’s face it, everything’s better with good people standing beside you. Your mentor is there to help you navigate the world of the Navy, which can be overwhelming at times. YOU’RE NEVER TOO OLD. Everyone gets a mentor, all the way up to E-9. DID YOU KNOW? There’s a team mentorship option, that involves multiple mentees, and an e-mentorship plan, for the Sailor who’s strapped for time. Talk to your departmental mentorship representative for more information.
