CSADD Promotes Responsibility

he holidays are a time when much of the command aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) enjoys an extended amount of liberty. In order for Sailors to enjoy the holidays, there is a group on the ship to help them from making reckless decisions. The Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD) helps its shipmates plan and act responsibly to prevent poor decision making. CSADD is a peer-to-peer mentoring program for shipmates of a similar age and pay grade to confide in each other, said Electrician’s Technician 2nd Class Brittany Horne, a lead representative for CSADD aboard Theodore Roosevelt. “Nine times out of 10, you’ll listen to somebody around the same age as you versus your chief,” said Yeoman 3rd Class Aerial Johnsonlugo, a lead representative for CSADD aboard Theodore Roosevelt. “It’s like your mom telling you to do something. You would listen to your brother or sister before you listen to your mom.” CSADD members participate in group functions after working hours that encourage positive liberty activities. These shipmates lean on one another to make responsible decisions while out on liberty. “If I am able to look out for one person in my Navy career, help that one person from making a bad decision like drinking and driving, they could stay at my house after a party, as long as they don’t get hurt. I’d feel like I’ve done something not just Navy-wise, but for my moral values,” said Johnsonlugo. CSADD discusses monthly topics, such as safe sex, drunk driving, motorcycle training, drugs, single sailor pregnancy,

suicide prevention and anything that can be a destructive decision, said Horne. This month’s CSADD topic is developing a safe driving plan and how to avoid speeding, alcohol, fatigue, seatbelt ejection and texting. For advice on better planning and decision making, join CSADD’s next meeting Wednesday Dec. 5 and every other Wednesday after that in the forward mess decks at 9 a.m.

Proper Hazmat Control

n a small space off of hangar bay two, Sailors work around the clock issuing paint, oil, and other hazardous materials (hazmat). USS Theodore Roosevelt’s (CVN 71) Hazardous Material (Hazmat) S-8A division stores these dangerous materials to prevent disasters from occurring. “At first when I came to hazmat I thought it would be boring, ‘Why do I have to do paper work to check out paint?’,” said Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (handling) Airman Kebria Sanders, assigned to Hazmat department. “I didn’t understand the effects of it. Some materials can’t be stored together because it could start an explosion.” Sailors assigned to Hazmat receive on-the-job training and attend an extensive course in handling and storing hazmat, to prevent potential dangers. “The training taught me how to run our database for issuing out hazmat, what to look for when dealing with hazmat, and how to separate and store the paint,” said Sanders. “Everything you need to know when dealing with hazmat is in that course.” Improperly stored hazmat contributed to a blaze aboard the USS George Washington (CVN 73) in 2008. The fire spread throughout eight decks, 80 compartments and injured 37 Sailors. “People who run hazmat are responsible for letting our shipmates know about hazmat,” said Sanders. “We had a Sailor come in to check out paint and other hazardous materials. Logistics Specialist 3rd Class Bryan Roach, assigned to Supply department’s S-8A division, verifies the stock number to the hazardous material (hazmat) issue receipt prior to issuing hazmat aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71). Sailors in S-8A safely provide and store hazmat to prevent mishaps from occurring aboard the ship.

looked up the process and started to fill out the paper. I found out before I gave him the material that it was a seven day locker [where Sailors store hazmat for seven days]. I had to explain to him why it can’t be stored together. “ Improperly storing or misusing hazmat can be disastrous. The Sailors in Hazmat help ensure TR’s crew handles and stows materials in a safe manner.
