ailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) participated in a 5K run held in the ship’s hangar bay Nov. 3. Originally scheduled to be on the carrier’s flight deck, high winds forced the run inside. Even so, Sailors from various departments met in the ship’s hangar bay and ran their hearts out. “It’s great that we have something like this,” said Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (fuel) 2nd Class Jaime M. Vittorio, a 5K participant. “It allows people to come together and motivate each other. Even though we just finished one PRT another is right around the corner.” Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) hosted the 5K, which began at 8 a.m. and concluded when the last runner crossed the finish line. The hosts even set up a loudspeaker system and played music as the runners made their rounds. Theodore Roosevelt is underway conducting carrier qualifications.
The Golden Ticket
SS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) will host its command holiday party at the Virginia Beach Convention Center in Virginia Beach, Va., Nov. 22 from 6 p.m. to 12 a.m. This year’s holiday party will have a 1920’s Great Gatsby theme. “After a couple of long workup cycles, it would be something fun,” said Megan Villapudua, Theodore Roosevelt’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) fun boss. “There are a lot of surprises that will be unveiled. Bring out your family. People have made new friendships during this underway period. They’ve gotten close to their shipmates. Get dressed up, let loose a little bit. It’s kind of their time to shine before we get back into more underways.” The party will include music, dinner, refreshments, prizes and a best dressed contest for those dressed thematically. “I’m very excited for the holiday party,” said Logistics Specialist 2nd Class Nathan Pierce. “It gives us an actual chance to see each other outside of work and actually have fun. Since we’re taking it way back, I think I might mix it between the 70s and 2000s. I’m going to wear an all-white three piece suit, a bow tie, a fitted ball cap and some tennis shoes.” Holiday party tickets are on sale at the MWR ticket window aboard the ship until Nov. 14. E4 and below are $10, E5-E6 are $15 and E7 and above are $25. Sailors can make discounted reservations at The Holiday Inn Express and The Holiday Inn Oceanside, and free shuttles will be available between the hotels and convention center.
