Born in Baltimore, Maryland, WADE BEACH has performed in the Washington, D.C., area for many years, working with jazz and pop artists such as Eddie Harris, Billy Harper, Gary Bartz, Richie Cole, Grady Tate, Keeter Betts, Andrew White, the Jackson Five, Barry White, and the Dells. He is a veteran of the United States Air Force Band, performing with the Combos and the Airmen of Note for three presidents, and with artists Peter Erskine, Bob Berg, Tommy Newsom, Joe Williams, Ernie Watts, Arturo Sandoval and Dave Liebman, and has traveled throughout the world as well as performing at notable locations such as the Kennedy Center, Wolf Trap, and Carnegie Hall. Beach has been on faculty at Prince George’s Community College and Northern Virginia Community College and is currently Adjunct Professor of Jazz Piano at George Mason University, where he is the instructor for the Jazz combos and Jazz/Commercial Piano class. He also teaches applied piano lessons. REGAN BROUGH began playing electric bass at age 11 for his family steel band, Pan Jam. The son of a university percussion professor, he was expected to play a wide variety of ethnic music in his early years. As a teenager, he received several outstanding soloist awards, culminating at the 2005 International
Society of Bassists Convention, where he was awarded second place in the Jazz Solo Division. In 2006, he became the bassist for the premiere jazz ensemble of the United States Army, The U.S. Army Blues. He has performed at the White House and the Vice-President’s residence, for heads of state and various military leaders from around the world, and alongside artists such as Arturo Sandoval, Terell Stafford, Wayne Bergeron, Tim Warfield, Eric Marienthal, John Clayton, Bill Watrous, and Conrad Herwig, among others. Regan received his BM in Bass Performance from Brigham Young University and his MM in Composition from George Mason University. Visit Regan online at reganbrough.com. Drummer and percussionist KEVIN MCDONALD’s performance credits include Dave Liebman, Mark Turner, Paquito D’Rivera, Miguel Zenon, Bob Mintzer, Randy Brecker, and Lee Konitz in international venues that include Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, The White House, the Library of Congress, JEN, the Midwest Clinic, and Bimhuis. Professor of Applied Jazz Percussion at George Mason University’s Dewberry School of Music, McDonald is a Ph.D. candidate at Catholic University completing his dissertation, “Hearing the American Civil Rights Movement in the Music of Max Roach.” He also
serves as drummer for the U.S. Navy Band Commodores, the Navy’s premier jazz ensemble. McDonald was selected to perform in Carnegie Hall’s 2011 Professional Training Workshops and has given masterclasses at institutions around the globe as well as at Columbia University, Georgetown University, and Manhattan School of Music. McDonald is a proud endorsing artist for Zildjian Cymbals, Ludwig Drums, Vic Firth Drumsticks, and Remo Drumheads. Visit Kevin online at kevinmcdonaldmusic.com. JAY UNGAR AND MOLLY MASON achieved international acclaim when their performance of Jay’s composition, Ashokan Farewell, became the musical hallmark of Ken Burns’ The Civil War on PBS. The soundtrack won a Grammy and Ashokan Farewell was nominated for an Emmy. The piece was originally inspired by Jay and Molly’s Ashokan Fiddle & Dance Camps in New York’s Catskill Mountains, which are still going strong today. Jay and Molly are musicians of enormous talent who draw their repertoire and inspiration from a wide range of American musical styles—19th-century classics, lively Appalachian, Cajun, and Celtic fiddle tunes, and favorites from the golden age of country and swing—along with their own songs, fiddle tunes, and orchestral compositions.
In recent years, Jay and Molly have reached an ever-widening audience through their appearances on Great Performances and A Prairie Home Companion, their own public radio specials, and their work on film soundtracks such as Brother’s Keeper, Legends of the Fall, and a host of Ken Burns’ PBS documentaries. They’ve had the honor of performing at The White House for two sitting Presidents and continue to tour extensively, delighting audiences across the country. www.jayandmolly.com VOICES OF SERVICE are part of the nonprofit CAMMO (Center for American Military Music Opportunities). They are a singing quartet which includes retired Master Sgt. Caleb Green, retired Staff Sgt. Ron Henry, Sgt. Maj. Christal Rheams, and Sgt. 1st Class Jason Hanna. VOS uses their platform to increase awareness of what music can do for service men and women who are coping with post-traumatic stress and other invisible/visible wounds. They have been singing together seven years, and now their journey and purpose have reached a new dimension. After their successful competition in Season 14 of America’s Got Talent, placing Fifth, they have been able to create national awareness to the struggle that our service members, veterans, and their families go through when dealing with visible and invisible
injuries. They represent the excellence that exists within our military and veteran communities, and are an inspiring example for the nation that they serve, have served, and continue to serve through music. www.cammomusic.org
VETERANS AND THE ARTS INITIATIVE The Veterans and the Arts Initiative has served as an arts and community hub for our local veterans, service members, their families, military caregivers, and community members since 2014. The Initiative has brought our community together at the Hylton Performing Arts Center to engage with the arts through performances, workshops, exhibitions, and special events that have featured the arts. Past offerings have included music, visual art, dance, and poetry. The intended benefit of the Veterans and the Arts Initiative is to facilitate community engagement by establishing lasting connections to the arts and supporting strong social relationships within the community.
