DIRECTOR'S NOTE “If your actions create a legacy that inspires others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, then, you are an excellent leader.” -Dolly Parton 9-5 is a comedy about good leadership. With this production, we explore the journey of transformation that the office environment undergoes, from hostile and oppressive to open and supportive (once the women have hogtied their boss!) The song 9-5 has always been a battle cry for the wage workers of America, those who have to hustle and grind for every dollar, as the lyrics exclaim “barely getting by…enough to drive you crazy if you let it.” But with a big helping of humor and a roast of toxic male leadership, this musical comedy inspires a serious look of how our work spaces can use an update of feminist perspective, making life better for everyone. The style of this madcap comedy is, like Dolly Parton herself, always self-aware of what it is skewering. With the clear perspective of a "Backwoods Barbie", the show embraces low-brow humor of sexual politics, gender stereotypes, and crass behavior not uphold a norm but to put it all in its proper place. The heart of the play is showing us a better future, but the humorous energy is what guides the entire enterprise. There’s a humbleness to creating comedy that smashes the patriarchy but does it without the self-righteousness of taking oneself too seriously. I think this is the secret to Dolly’s enduring success – she tackles real world problems but opens her heart to everyone. She’s isn’t trying to judge anyone or teach a lesson, she’s just showing us what she cares about, sharing her heart with exemplary authenticity. We hope this production of 9-5 inspires you to think about how your work-life balance might change for the better, but mostly we aim to send you out of theatre tonight with a big smile on your face. Thanks for coming to the theatre! -Rex Daugherty
