owa’s film festivals may not have the star power of Cannes and Sundance, but there’s no shortage of filmmaking chops to highlight. Iowa is home to multiple film festivals, and every year film buffs from around the country head to the Midwest for festival screenings. Mary Blackwood, a member of the Iowa Filmmakers Alliance and one of the creators of Iowa City’s Landlocked Film Festival, received about 190 film entries last year and expects more this year. “It really helps filmmakers and people in Iowa City develop networking with other filmmakers. It’s really wonderful. We have a lot of repeat people attend from New York, California, Washington, Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa, among other states,” Blackwood said. “Everybody that has come to the festival is amazed at how welcoming the audience is.” The Hardacre Film Festival in Tipton is the longest-running film festival in Iowa, said Will Valet, festival director. “Which is really great for a small town of 3,000 people to pull something like this off,” he said. Running in its 14th year, Hardacre has attracted filmmakers from as far as New Zealand and Israel, and as close as Marion. This festival focuses more on short films and screened 24 films last year, including eight feature-length and 16 shorts. “Our goal is to make Hardacre a world-class film festival for Iowans. Many of our films premiered at prestigious festivals like Cannes or South by Southwest just months before ours, and we premiere many films ourselves,” Valet said.

4 HARDACRE FILM FESTIVAL August 5-6 | Tipton

The 14th annual Hardacre Film Festival is one of the few opportunities in the Midwest to screen truly independent and underground cinema. One of the primary goals of the Hardacre Film Festival is to bring a diverse selection of cutting-edge independent motion pictures to an eastern Iowa audience that otherwise may not have an opportunity to view these films. The focus is cinema as art and the filmmakers as artists. hardacrefilmfestival.com

udy Collins has thrilled audiences worldwide with her unique blend of interpretative folk songs and contemporary themes. Her impressive career has spanned more than 50 years. In 1961, Collins released her first album, “A Maid of Constant Sorrow.” She interpreted the songs of fellow artists — particularly the social poets of the time such as Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs and Tom Paxton.

I

n the strictest sense, Steve Earle isn’t a country artist. He’s a roots rocker. Earle emerged in the mid-’80s, playing stripped-down neorockabilly that occasionally verged on outlaw country. His unwillingness to conform to the rules of Nashville or to rock ’n’ roll meant that he never broke into the mainstream. Instead, he cultivated a dedicated following, drawing from both country and rock audiences. He remains an vital element in contemporary American music.

o La Tengo’s place in rock history is unique. The personal and musical partnership of Ira Kaplan and Georgia Hubley, with the addition of James McNew in the early ’90s, has been one of the most intimate and secure musical alliances in history. Few bands in memory dare to experiment quite so widely with such casual audacity. From screeching art-rock and jangling pop songs to electronic soundscapes and hushed lullabies, Yo La Tengo’s music explores the range of musical history without ever sounding less than modern.

he Iowa Renaissance Festival & Gathering o’ Celts will mark its 20th year this Memorial Day weekend. The three-day royal fair will showcase a sampling of many of the favorite acts and activities from previous years’ events. It will involve both the serious and comedic talents of some 200 costumed characters and stage performers. “Think of it as a state fair from 1500s Eu-

rope or a three-ring circus with two musicals thrown in, said festival founder and producer Gregory Schmidt. Joust Evolution will bring an elaborate equestrian stunt show to fill the amphitheater at the Middle Amana Park grounds. “There will be more of everything, Schmidt said. “Especially in the food court and in the hands-on demonstrations. A glass-blowing team will demonstrate its art with an on-site kiln. That rare spectacle will be only one of 25 artisan demonstrations and living history exhibits. With new artisan merchants joining the returning shopkeepers, there will be a whole day’s worth of shopping to be done at 50 booths. Some of the new stage shows will be “Crazy Celts in Kilts from Minneapolis, “Friendly Fire from Des Moines, “Gryphon Poursuivant from Wisconsin and “Rakset al-Nehri from the Quad Cities. Unique to this festival are the various games of skill that the public can challenge themselves at: archery, crossbows, hi-stryker, olde Scottish golf, sword challenge, knife-toss, and a variety of kids’ crafts. The beer garden will offer Millstream brews and wines from various vineyards. It will be surrounded by 10 specialty food vendors and novelty treat stalls featuring everything from French creole to traditional turkey legs.

David Koechner takes the stage D avid Koechner is, both figuratively and literally, a character. His characters from movies like “Anchorman,” “Waiting” and “Extract,” as well as television shows like Comedy Central’s “The Naked Trucker and T-Bones Show” and NBC’s “The Office” are well known and oft quoted — “I miss your scent. I miss your musk,” as Champ Kind says in “Anchorman,” has probably been repeated a thousand times by people in their 20s. And Koechner (pronounced “keck-nur”) is a funny and gregarious conversationalist in his own right, probably partly due to the fact that he was born and bred in the Midwest. He grew up playing a class clown in Tipton, MO., and learned how to craft and create characters on the fly under the tutelage of Del Close at Chicago’s ImprovOlympic. To him, being a character comes easy. “Any characteristic can inform a character june 10 & 11 — curtains, carpet. A pen; what would it be like to be inky? Right?” It’s that outside-the-box thinking that Koechner will bring to Joker’s Comedy Night Club in Cedar Koechner said in a Falls for four shows on June 10 and 11. Tickets phone interview. “I like are $15 in advance and $17.50 at the door. doing stuff like that.”

He started doing stand-up “about a year ago,” he says, “to make sure I had something to do.” But he knows he can’t escape his characters. When he first put together his one-man show and hit the road, people would yell out for him to do Todd Packer from “The Office,” or a line from “Run Ronnie Run.” “I found out quickly that’s what people expected,” Koechner said. So Koechner has embraced the characters — characters he’s done in the movies, in television, on stage, and even ones he invents from audience suggestion. (What IS it like to be an ink pen, anyway?) How he became a comic: “At the very beginning, I never knew how a person got into show business. I went to Chicago and visited Second City for the first time: ‘Oh, they have classes.’ ... So I moved to Chicago to study specifically at Second City, then I went to ImprovOlympic. That turned out to be an amazing, fortunate thing. I met Del Close, I studied with him. ... From my very first class, I loved it.” Working on blockbuster movies with Will Ferrell: “Let’s just say it’s talent. It’s a combination of things; it’s a lot of work, and of course meeting the right people, but if you’re doing the right work you’re gonna meet the right people anyway. You have to have something; you can’t just be buddies with someone and it happens. ... I went from IO, to Second City, to ‘Saturday Night Live,’ then met Adam McKay (who co-wrote ‘Anchorman’).” His “Always Open” series on College Humor: “Jason Bateman and Will Arnett hired me to do this talk show, ‘Always Open.’ What we do is I sit down with a celebrity at a Denny’s restaurant, we talk and have a meal, I do this character. We don’t talk about Denny’s, but you know we’re at a Denny’s. We’ve aired four so far. We did six in two days, and now we’re waiting until we see if they want some more.” What he’s doing now: “Right now I’m shooting ‘Piranha 3DD.’ ... When work comes along, you don’t turn it down. David Hasselhoff is in it. A movie like this is just a fun, campy time. I tour whenever I can. ... I do that, I do everything: television, stage, stand-up. And that ‘Always Open’ series on College Humor — check it out.”

Still, few artists have had a second act like Jennifer Lopez has had, what with a new label, “American Idol,” and ads for lady razors and hair dye. And the new album? It’s solidly slick. Despite gray hair for Adam “Ad-Rock” Horowitz, fatherhood for Michael “Mike D” Diamond and cancer for Adam “MCA” Yauch, the group is as goofy as ever, as evidenced by the old-school flavor on their new album, “Hot Sauce Committee Part Two.” Yauch, who discovered he had cancer of the salivary gland in 2009, is notably absent from the balcony jokefest. He’s still undergoing treatment. Yauch’s condition has put the tight-knit group’s near future in limbo. “It is what is,” Horowitz says seriously, not long after extinguishing a cigarette. “You deal with it. He’s getting treatment. That’s the most important thing.” Yauch’s illness made the group, whose ages now range from 44 to 46, more appreciative of their time together when they returned to the studio to morph the originally planned “Hot Sauce Committee Part One” into “Part Two.” The Beastie Boys’ first lyrical effort in seven years is a return to the group’s signature roots of uncomplicated beats and clever rhymes. “It made us enjoy sticking with the vibe that we had already established,” Diamond says. “That became a fun thing for us, and hopefully when people interact with this record, they will be enjoying themselves, too.” When questioned why they haven’t capitalized more on their fame like LL Cool J and Queen Latifah, Diamond proclaims that he angled for Horowitz to judge the NBC talent show “The Voice.” (“The network went with Adam Levine,” Diamond matter-of-factly notes.) “All the music I listened to in high school that I loved and that moved me wasn’t the same music other kids were listening to in school,” Diamond says. “I got into punk rock and new wave, then dub and hip-hop. I still feel like I’m an outsider. I still feel like we’re doing this thing that’s outside of the People’s Choice Awards.” Of course, that’s exactly the way Beastie Boys like it, and they’re not done. The Grammy-winning group hopes to revisit “Hot Sauce Committee Part One.”

inFamoUs 2 Cole was blamed for the destruction of Empire City — even though he was as much a victim as anyone else. Except for the superpowers he gained, of course. Now that he’s figured out the truth behind the explosion that gave him the ability to control electricity, Cole must focus his energies on mastering his powers to combat a new menace threatening New Marais while fending off the forces that want him out of the city. Choices made during the course of the game will affect the outcome through an improved morality system. A new tool kit allows users to create and share side quests with other players.

BlazBlUe ContinUUm shiFt ii This portable update of the console release contains the entire story from the original as well as all downloadable content and characters. The system mechanics have been updated and the roster rebalanced for an entirely different fighting experience. Nearly the entire game is presented in 3-D on the Nintendo 3DS.

under or jump over obstacles and leap past gaps, while heavier characters are built tough but less agile. Weapons can be given their own individual customizations, such as increased-capacity magazines, silencers and the like. There are four classes, each with its own set of abilities that can be unlocked as a player earns experience through play. There’s the attack-oriented Soldier class, the healing- centered Medic, the handy Engineer and the stealthy Operative. Unlike many shooters, any class can use any weapon, though some are restricted to certain body types. “Section 8: Prejudice” takes a different approach to movement than “Brink.” Instead of acrobatics, it offers the brute force of powered armor suits. The game includes a solo campaign as well as

two multiplayer modes: Conquest, where up to 32 players battle over control points on a map; and Swarm, where up to four players work together to fend off waves of enemies. Similar to the classic “Tribes” games, the warriors of “Section 8” use rechargeable jet packs to augment their jumps and soar over walls and terrain. And unlike most shooters, players don’t enter the game at set points — instead, they choose a spot on the map to rocket down to from thousands of feet up, adjusting their landing aim in flight and braking at the last moment. Players can choose from several pre-generated soldier classes with different weapon and equipment loads, or design their own custom classes.

oth “Brink” and “Section 8: Prejudice” are team-based shooters that stress mobility as much as gunplay. The former takes place on a large floating city called the Ark, one of the last refuges of humanity after the oceans rise. People being people, a wall has been built across it. On one side is the security force assigned to maintain order on the Ark, while on the other is the resistance group that has risen from the poor members of the refugee society. It’s all an excuse for lots of shooting, really, and “Brink” delivers that, with lots of guns available from the start and many more goodies unlocked with play. “Brink” offers missions for each side that can be tackled in any order, either with and against other players or just the AI, as well as several challenges for up to four players, victory over which will unlock a selection of new abilities and weapons for purchase. Each of the game’s maps has a version in which the security forces attack various objectives and the resistance fighters defend them, and vice versa. Players can customize their characters to an extreme degree with clothing, accessories and other cosmetic features. Most of these options don’t have an effect on game play, but body type — medium, light and charheavy — makes a big difference, as lighter char alacters are better at the parkour-like moves that al low players to shimmy up to high ground, slide

Hosting “Saturday Night Live” last Mother’s Day eve sealed the deal. And, dare we say, she’s also a sex symbol for a certain age set. Her heart, though, remains with her late husband of 18 years, television host Allen Ludden. Their romance is documented in White’s new book, “If You Ask Me (and of Course You Won’t).” Though White hasn’t remarried since Ludden died in 1981, she still dispenses advice on what a girl wants. We asked how the typical male schlub could ever court a woman like her.

Q. What’s the best compliment to pay a lady? A. A lady likes to be complimented on her

Q.

What’s something that men of today don’t do anymore that should make a return? A. If you’re walking with your lady on the sidewalk, I still like to see a man walking street-side, to protect the lady from traffic. I grew up with that, and I hate to see something like that get lost. I still like to see that a man opens the door. I like those touches of chivalry that are fast disappearing. If I sound old-fashioned, it’s because I’m as old as I am. But it’s just polite.

Q. After a good first date, should I call her the next day? Or should I wait a little? A. Call the next day, by all means. If you

both had a lovely evening, and if you don’t call, she’ll think, “Oh, that must have been a drag.” It doesn’t have to be a serious call.

Q. Women say they love men with a sense

of humor. But I’m not funny. What should I do? A. It’s your outlook on life that counts. If you take yourself lightly and don’t take yourself too seriously, pretty soon you can find the humor in our everyday lives. And sometimes it can be a lifesaver.
