anctus Real, known for No. 1 hits Forgiven and Lead Me, is coming to Cedar Falls. The American Christian rock band has a Dove Award under its belt, as well as five albums, including 2010â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Pieces of Real Heart, which earned them a Grammy nod. The bandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s music incorporates a modern alternative rock style and has evolved from power pop to a more melodic and guitar-driven sound.

ack Black and Kyle Gass are back in the ring to lambast everyone who counted them as down for the count. Rize of the Fenix is largely a wily metajoke within itself. After 2006’s Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny floundered at the box office and cast a dark cloud over the subsequent soundtrack album, many believed the D would die off quickly. Fenix plays as the band’s great caper: it parodies the concept of a comeback album while simultaneously functioning as one. Luckily, the trick works most of the time, though the band sacrifices some of its shenanigans for unexpected maturity. Jack Black has really come into his own as a vocalist. The comedy actor has some impressive pipes, operating somewhere between a squealing falsetto and gravelly snarl. He shows range on the album, his chops a comedy cocktail of one part Rob

Halford, two parts Ronnie James Dio and three parts of his own private stock. While both mainstay members lend their talents to the fretwork, Gass is clearly the virtuoso. His plucking is rapid-fire, wrapping itself around Black’s vocals like a tightly coiled serpent. The ever-busy Dave Grohl lends his considerable talent to beating the skins once again. How did the busiest man in rock find the time for this? The tracks are sometimes scattershot. The title track is the most direct of them all, charting the band’s death following its feature film and reincarnation. The personal jabs and barbs aimed at the

media help to make it a standout track. Subject matter runs the gamut from Star Wars (Deth Starr) to Black and Gass’s friendship (The Ballad of Hollywood Jack and the Rage Kage). The hilarious skits from their debut album are back, none better than Classical Teacher, which will have you in tears. Some of the tracks, though, are simply too short to resonate or lack the memorability of old staples like Tribute or Wonderboy. I can’t say that the time away has improved Tenacious D, but I can say this band still knows how to make your face hurt with unadulterated laughter. In the largely humorless radio soundscape, that’s more than enough to be worth a look.
While it doesn’t continually pulverize your funny bone in the same manner as their debut, you will not regret letting the D rock your socks again.

Last time out, on her 2008 album My One and Only Thrill, Philadelphia chanteuse Melody Gardot cast a subtle torch-singer spell. That album worked a gray-day Billie Holiday mood, and The Absence maintains a gauzy, low-key vibe. Instead of evoking a smoky Parisian melancholy, however, The Absence finds its source of sadness and longing through the yearning concept of saudade in the fado music of Portugal. That, along with the sunnier rhythms of Brazilian bossa nova, which come to the fore in lead single Mire and the bluesy Goodbye, suffuses the album with a sophisticated, worldly melancholy, with which Gardot always seems entirely at home. — Dan DeLuca, The Philadelphia Inquirer
While I Shovel Snow, one of the best tracks on the Walkmen’s last album, 2010’s Lisbon, was its most understated, and it seems to have suggested the direction for Heaven, the New York/Philly quintet’s sixth full-length. This is a pretty album, in the way that albums from the National can be pretty. “I was the Duke of Earl, but it couldn’t last,” Hamilton Leithauser croons introspectively on album-opener We Can’t Be Beat. There’s an element of doo-wop to what the Walkmen do there and on No One Ever Sleeps, a track that also features Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold. Fans of The Rat, the band’s signature anthem, may be disappointed, but Heaven offers plenty of rarefied pleasures. — Steve Klinge, The Philadelphia Inquirer
Since the ’90s, Cornershop has made Brit-popping trip-hop ripe with the flavors of traditional Indian music. It’s been a tightly knit affair that singer/lyricist Tjinder Singh and pal Ben Ayres (keyboards, tamboura) have brewed to a musical stew that Cornershop calls “turban” pop. The the Anglo-Indian ensemble has opened themselves up, beyond their Punjabi whir, to include elements of folk, soul and electro. In Urban Turban, Singh hands the mike to, among others, SoKo for Something Makes You Feel Like. But it’s the sunshiny, choir-backed What Did the Hippie Have in His Bag? starring Singh alone that makes Urban Turban a truly torrid treat. — A.D. Amorosi, The Philadelphia Inquirer
Make no mistake: Paul Thorn is an excellent songwriter in his own right and quite the colorful character and performer. For this album, however, the former boxer from Tupelo, Miss., has decided to focus on the songs of others. The good news is it still sounds like a Paul Thorn album, and a mighty fine one. Most of the material comes from the same rootsy milieu he works in but is not overly familiar, helping the singer-guitarist and his excellent band put their own stamp on it even without radically reworking it. That goes for the dirty blues of Elvin Bishop’s title song and the swampy gospel of Buddy and Julie Miller’s Shelter Me Lord. — Nick Cristiano, The Philadelphia Inquirer

amed illustrator Gary Kelley’s atmospheric and slyly humorous “Pigasso” poster referencing Picasso’s “blue period” is a sure sign that Cedar Falls’ College Hill Arts Festival is fast approaching. An estimated 12,000 visitors are expected to head to the gallery without walls to view and shop at 75 artists’ booths during the award-winning, juried art show often described as a jewel in the Cedar Valley. Mary-Sue Bartlett, who is co-chairing the event with Vaughn Griffith, says the festival’s calling cards are high-quality fine art and a serene setting. “So many other festivals take place on asphalt streets or concrete parking lots, so artists welcome the grass underfoot and trees overhead.” Artists will exhibit and sell their works, and musical entertainment, food and the Young Art Collectors Gallery add to the festival atmosphere. CHAF is kept deliberately small and intimate to allow interaction between artists and patrons. There are artists from Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Kentucky, Arkansas and Indiana.

illiam Bisbee has a pretty crappy job right now, and he couldn’t be happier. Bisbee is working on the PCI: Poop Cycle Investigation traveling exhibit at the Bluedorn Science Imaginarium in Waterloo. For the next couple of months, his to-do-doo list will include regular trips to a local farm to gather up big ol’ cow pies that he’ll place in a plexiglass display case. “I’m not sure whether I’ll go out once a week or what, but I’ve got a steady supply of poop,” he said. Through Sept. 1, Imaginarium visitors can get the scoop on Iowa livestock poop through several interactive stations that explore Iowa’s manure cycle in amusing and colorful ways. They’ll learn what manure is, how it benefits them, why farmers manage manure and why it’s used to feed Iowa crops. “Iowa is farm country,” Bisbee said. “I think a lot of kids living in the metro area don’t understand how this works, how farmers use manure to grow crops.”
Lilly Nielsen, 11, was up to her nose in information during a visit to the exhibit this week. “It smells bad,” she said, recoiling from the cow pie. “I’m becoming a vegetarian.” Manure is used in soil that grows vegetables, her mom, Anna Nielsen, noted, laughing. And actually, this particular pile isn’t so bad, Bisbee said, because it came from a grass-fed cow. “What they eat makes a difference. This smells sweet. And it’s fresh — two hours out of the cow.” Lilly, her twin brother Dan and friend Madison Marquette, also 11, made the rounds of the exhibit, stopping at various stations to be quizzed on their poop prowess. At one, the kids matched up which piles came from which animals — cow, pig, sheep, turkey or chicken. “I know this one’s from the cow because it’s huge,” Madison said. “And I’ve seen pig poop before.” At another station, press the button for the correct answer and you get a “mooooooo” sound. the button for the incorrect answer and you get the sound from the other end of the cow. “I made it fart on the last question. I love making that noise. It’s so cool,” Lilly said, pressing the button repeatedly. For Bisbee, the sound is music to his ears. It means the kids are learning something. “It amazes me. They will stand there and really read it all,” he said. F
or a quick read on someone’s personality, we ask “Are you a dog or cat person?” In China, says artist Esther Cheng, the question is “Are you a mountain or water person?” Then she smiles, confessing. “I lean more toward mountains. They’re appealing to me. I’m a little afraid of water, but sometimes the mountains and water go together.” She marries the two exquisitely in several landscapes featured in Esther Cheng: New Works in Watermedia now on display at the Hearst Center for the Arts in Cedar Falls. The farewell exhibition celebrates Cheng’s artistry and represents about five years of her work. Cheng is relocating to Sacramento, Calif., in August. Cheng is known for her deft, delicate and detailed touch with watercolors. “I love the fluidity, the transparency and luminosity of the medium. I enjoy the challenge of controlling a difficult medium. There is control, but there’s also freedom, and the colors mix and mingle beautifully to create a wide range of colors. I wet the paper first and lay down several colors and
let them mix together.” Her latest obsessions are glass and marbles, again showing her passion for luminosity. “I like the reflection of glass, and I played marbles a lot as a child, so there’s a certain amount of nostalgia.” Born in China, Cheng and her family escaped to Taiwan in 1949 during the communist Chinese Revolution. After getting married, she and her husband arrived in the United States in 1971 and later moved to Cedar Falls. She began taking watercolor classes in 1987. Inspiration comes from the world around Cheng, whether it’s her travels to China and Europe or evening walks around her Cedar Falls neighborhood. She takes countless photographs as “visual memories. I use them only as a reference point. Another year, another edition of Insert Sporting Franchise Here. The latest iteration offers better graphics, better physics, better gameplay and better pregame rituals — and it will make the previous four titles sitting on your shelf completely obsolete, no doubt. So it goes with NCAA Football, putting out its 2013 version this summer. Among the improvements: quarterbacking, defensive AI, in-game commentary, online functionality and player scouting. Oh, and there’s a new roster of players, of course, as well as a Heisman Challenge mode that lets players try to match the performances of former winners like Doug Flutie and Marcus Allen. Sora, Riku, Mickey, Donald, Goofy: the gang’s all here in the Kingdom Hearts 3DS debut, Dream Drop Distance. In addition to the old, familiar faces, some new friends hit the scene, including characters from The Hunchback of Notre Dame and quirky DS title The World Ends With You. Sora and Riku — yes, you get to play as both of them — are taking the Mark of Mastery exam. They’ll encounter many Dream Eaters along the way: half Spirits, half Nightmares. Spirits can be recruited as allies, while Nightmares make for daunting foes. dazzle your eyes with sun-baked vistas and dynamic shadows. The absolute biggest kicker here is a multiplayer suite that can easily become a massive time sink. Only Rockstar would surprise admirers with an online variation that doesn’t feel like a tacked-on afterthought. The campaign will take the average player a good 12 hours to complete, but there isn’t a ton of incentive to return for a double-dip with the loss of the sandbox approach. This doesn’t necessarily create a fractured experience, but it will eventually give you cause to put the controller down. Luckily, the journey to the end is often so alarmingly good that it helps transcend the medium into something else entirely: art. With a flawless track record, Rockstar are undoubtedly the da Vinci of this art form.

nother year, another stroke of genius by the artisans over at Rockstar Games. Immediately, Rockstar’s built-in audience has a jarring facet to climb over: Max Payne 3 does not fall into the colossal, open-world vein they have been mining to critical adoration. However, the linear and on-rails approach keeps things grounded and drives the narrative forward in a highly fulfilling manner. The problem with Grand Theft Auto was that too often the player’s character felt like a minor piece in a much larger, overreaching chronicle and that the metropolises themselves served as the framing device. It wasn’t until Red Dead Redemption, Rockstar’s magnum opus and odyssey to the West, that players could get a feel for the protagonist. Max Payne 3 is the natural next progression, featuring a meaty revenge tale with all the noir trimmings fans have grown to expect from this stellar and storied franchise. With Niko Bellic, John Marston and Max Payne, Rockstar has proven its writers have a knack for crafting lovable anti-heroes. In this gorgeously realized capper to a saga 11 years in the making, everything that thrilled in the first place returns. The goosebump-inducing bullet-time and shoot-dodge maneuvers are back and easy to pick up on. All of the controls are tight and responsive, with that double-coated layer of polish expected from Rockstar. The setting may have relocated from New York City to São Paulo, but that just gives Rockstar a reason to

he dungeon-crawling The Binding of Isaac was already infinitely replayable — and incredibly challenging — but the new Wrath of the Lamb DLC has doubled down on both fronts.
The basic gameplay remains intact. Defeat your enemies with your tears as you try to survive the horrors of your basement (KILL THEM WITH FIRE!). For newbies, it’s sort of like the dungeons from the original Legend of Zelda, only much, much creepier and disturbing. The best part of the new content: 10 challenges, which require players to forego maps or explore giant combined dungeons, among other tasks.

white house with a picket fence. Yes, it sounds trite, but that’s what you’ve always wanted. Ever since you watched those old reruns on TV — the ones from the ’50s where the father wears a hat every day — you dreamed of coming home to the smell of cookies baking, a houseful of family and toys on the sidewalk. Oh, and that picket fence. For some reason, that’s an important detail. For author Zach Wahls, the word “family” has similar meaning with a different normal, and a picket has nothing to do with a fence. In his new book, My Two Moms, he explains. From the moment he was conceived, Zach was a member of an unusual family. His mother, Terry, was an unmarried internal medicine physician at a Wisconsin hospital when she decided she was ready for children. She had to convince doctors to do the in vitro fertilization because they said they did not “do” illegitimate children. A few years later, she had the procedure again with the same donor and gave her son a biological sister, because a family was what Terry always wanted. It was icing on the cake when Terry met Jackie and they fell in love. For most of his early childhood, Zach didn’t think much about the fact that he had two moms. It was no big deal to other kids, so it was no big deal to him. When the family moved to Iowa to live closer to Terry’s mother, though,
Wahls encountered teasing and bullying. But his mothers had raised him with good values, and they instilled a sense of character in their son. They taught him that boys and girls are equal but different and that there is no “better” gender. They showed him that the world is “rarely black and white.” He learned that words can hurt, and so can being told that you have no rights. From his “Short Mom,” he learned the meaning of commitment and loyalty. His “Tall Mom” taught him cheerfulness. And when Zach was asked to testify in front of the Iowa House Judiciary Committee, both moms’ lessons of bravery were evident. Looking for a book that will warm your heart and make you proud of young men like this? My Two Moms will do the trick. However, the author bounces from thought to thought in this memoir, giving us half a story here, half there and something completely different in between. That’s appealing in an eager puppy sort of way, but this literary spill makes a mess sometimes. Still, Zach’s main message boldly holds this book together and overcomes the chaos to shine through. Love is love is love, he shows his readers, and gender doesn’t make any difference. Gender is not what makes a family. In his book, Zach asks, in many ways, “What’s the big deal?” I think the answer lies in his story. If you’ve been asking the same question, look for My Two Moms.

I’m in no more clothes than I’ll be at the Y this afternoon when I swim my mile.” The still-irate husband said he would pursue a judicial commission complaint against McCree. q Norway is home to perhaps the most inmate-friendly prison in the world, but the correctional system has an imminent crisis, as Anders Behring Breivik, the confessed killer of 77 people last year, is nearing formal conviction and sentencing. Officials fear the sociopathic Breivik will try to kill inmates to add to his toll, yet Norwegian law forbids solitary confinement as cruel. Consequently, according to a May report by Norway’s Verdens Gang newspaper, officials have begun a search to select, hire and train appropriate “friends” to hang out with Breivik behind bars to win his trust and prevent further mayhem. Among Breivik’s favorite recreational distractions: chess and hockey. q Collections of comically poor translations are legion, but the Beijing municipal government, in sympathy with English-speaking restaurant-goers, published a helpful guidebook recently of what the restaurateurs were trying, though inartfully, to say.
