THAT'S

WHAT'S UP I don’t know about you, but summer has been go-gogo all the time. It’s work here, sand volleyball there, a meeting here, a weekend trip there. I’m ready to sit and do nothing — except take in a little TV, that is. The crew at Pulse are advocating for their favorite returning TV shows that you should probably be DVRing the heck out of this fall. (We’ll leave judgment of the new shows, like Animal Practice, to the professionals. Though let me say: yikes.)

14

I’d normally be repping Castle, but I figured Don’t Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 is more in need of viewers — and has three fewer seasons to get caught up on. Jump to page 16 if you’re interested in our picks. Of course, for those of you who don’t feel like getting your couch potato on just yet, we’ve got the usual bevy of great things to do outside your house.

24

Maybe I’ll split the difference and go to the taping of Whad’Ya Know? in Cedar Falls (see page 26 for details). Sitting and leaving the house: two great things, better together.

The alt rockers first hit the scene in 1999, but didn’t achieve mainstream success until 2003 when they released their debut self-titled studio album. The album featured the group’s first hit single, Swing, Swing. The band’s second album, Move Along, was released in 2005 and featured songs like Dirty Little Secret and the title track. The first single off the band’s third album — Gives You Hell — was the group’s first international hit. The Rejects recently released their fourth album, Kids in the Street. Radio releases include Beekeeper’s Daughter, Kids in the Street and Walk Over Me. Rockers Boys like Girls will join the Rejects for the show. They formed in

2005 and gained national recognition after releasing their self-titled debut album. Get ready for a Mac attack. The Pittsburgh-based hip-hop artist who was once endorsed by Donald Trump will be coming to the Cedar Valley. Mac Miller, known for songs like Party on Fifth Ave, Knock Knock, Frick Park Market and, of course, Donald Trump, will play the McLeod Center on Sept. 16 as part of his worldwide Macadelic Tour. Mac Miller released his debut studio album, Blue Slide Park, in November, but he’s hardly new to the game. The 20year-old had an EP and six mixtapes to his credit before that and boasts dozens of slickly produced music videos on YouTube with millions of views each. Live Weekend and Heart of a Student will present the concert, which will also feature Travis Porter and YG.

As part of the concert, Heart of a Student is hosting a daytime conference at the University of Northern Iowa to increase college awareness and readiness among college-bound lowincome, first-generation and minority students. Professionals from the music and television industries as well as higher education will collaborate on topics like financial aid, registering for college, scholarship applications and budgeting.

I Harakiri by Serj Tankian Genre: Hard rock, art rock Sounds like: System of a Down, Scars On Broadway

thebottomline: C+

t is fitting that System of a Down’s Serj Tankian should title his third solo album Harakiri, after an ancient form of ritualistic suicide for shamed Japanese warriors. If Tankian keeps releasing ho-hum albums without his Armenian bandmates, his career will most certainly go the way of the vanquished samurai. On Harakiri, it’s more obvious than ever that Tankian is neutered and hamstrung minus his band. Outside Rage Against the Machine’s mud-slinging political manifestos, SOAD was always the closest to matching that subversive punch. As lead vocalist, Tankian was the spark igniting the Molotov cocktail. On band staples like Chop Suey and Toxicity, he besieged the listener with profound ruminations on warfare, poverty and genocide in a falsetto screech that could peel the paint off Mom and Dad’s walls.

definitelydownload 4 Figure It Out 4 Harakiri

Tankian proves here that he still has the beating fire in his heart and the vocal chops to back it up, but Harakiri lacks focus. He needs his band at his side to double down with an onslaught of bludgeoning riffs and double-bass drum attacks. “CEOs are the disease,” shrieks Tankian on lead single Figure It Out. He may be beating a dead horse, but this is one of the rare tracks where the sonic blitzkrieg works. Credit that to Tankian’s still-mint vocals and chugging guitar riffs that masticate everything in the way. The title track’s theatrical and cosmic nature works well enough but lacks the

4 Cornucopia 4 Ching Chime

noxious wallop the opening salvo promised. Cornucopia drips with post-punk excess and remains memorable all the way through. It’s disheartening that none of it works all that well, as Tankian obviously still relishes in throwing poisoned darts at the political dartboard until he hits the bull’s-eye. There’s no doubt that it’s another intellectually driven work with venom stewing under the surface. For the first time, the call to arms fails to resonate, feeling like the tepid leftovers of a band with a more forward-thinking agenda. Next time around, an editor and Tankian’s former bandmates could help keep the grandiose yearnings in check.

Tankian is noticeably less dynamic when not backed by his band. The political agenda is obvious, but it lacks substance.

ANTONY & THE JOHNSONS CUt thE WorLd

JANKA NABAY AND THE BUBU GANG En YaY Sah

THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM handWrittEn

HANK WILLIAMS JR. oLd SChooL, nEW rULES

If Antony Hegarty had a dime for every goosebump he’s raised with his emotive voice, he could pay off the national debt. His haunting, expressive cry gets the backing of the Danish National Chamber Orchestra on his new album Cut the World, which was recorded live in Copenhagen, Denmark. Songs from Antony & the Johnsons’ four previous albums are gloriously worked over to spine-tingling effect. You Are My Sister, I Fell in Love With a Dead Boy and Kiss My Name all shimmer magnificently in the orchestral light. Another World — Hegarty’s conservationist plea to save the planet — is so profound here, listeners may actually take up its cause. Antony’s voice has always had the power to move mountains. On Cut, it moves something altogether more impressive: people. — Brian McManus, Philadelphia Inquirer

After emigrating from Sierra Leone, Nabay spent a few recent years in Philadelphia; he’s now based in Washington, D.C., although on En Yay Sah, he is accompanied by members of mostly Brooklyn-based indie bands. This is hyperkinetic, propulsive music, with Nabay’s gruff voice intertwined with serpentine guitar lines and Boshra Al-Saadi’s sweet-voiced responses, and with electric percussion and keyboards that often scan as modern rather than traditional. At times, it sounds a bit like Konono No. 1’s Congotronics. At other times, one hears traces of Jamaican dub or Fela’s Afrobeat. Nabay sings mostly in Krio or Temne; the lyrics often address the troubles in Sierra Leone, but the music is built for dance parties and celebrations. — Steve Klinge, Philadelphia Inquirer

The openers on the Gaslight Anthem’s majorlabel debut are a starter kit in both loving and hating the earnest Jersey rockers. The first single, 45, finally makes room for the careening riffage that Brian Fallon’s songwriting always lacked and climaxes with his best singing ever. But Handwritten flaunts the uneasy rhyme of “forgiven” and “handwritten” pronounced with the portentous syntax of the Verve Pipe. Fallon’s blocky tunes used to tend toward the latter, mistaking E Street lore for a daytime soap. Luckily, his best album is more in line with 45 — now he worries about putting “too much blood on the page” — and after some early “sha-la-la” losers comes the dynamite: Keepsake, Biloxi Parish, the wonderful Desire. The deluxe edition adds Blue Dahlia and a fine Nirvana cover. There’s even a tasteful ballad closer. — Dan Weiss, Philadelphia Inquirer

Last year, if you’ll recall, Hank Williams Jr. lost his longtime gig on ESPN’s Monday Night Football after making an analogy involving Hitler and President Obama. Bocephus doesn’t go quite that far here, but he still fills Old School, New Rules with noxiously reactionary and dimwitted rantings. It’s a shame Williams lets his worst traits run free here because he really is a talented musician who has done a lot of fine work, and the music here smokes the pants off most commercial country. His pungently bluesy take on his father’s You Win Again is an inspired reworking, and I’m Gonna Get Drunk and Play Hank Williams is an irresistible honkytonker. Of his originals, though, best of all is That Ain’t Good, a scorching country-rocker and workingman’s lament that skirts partisanship — and is all the more powerful for it. — Nick Cristiano, Philadelphia Inquirer

Legasista full of Japanese quirk JAMES FrAzIEr | Pulse Writer

L

egasista, an almost-quaint RPG Japanese import, is the sort of purchase whose enjoyably repetitious gameplay can easily suck up free hours. It’s a strength and a weakness that this is very Japanese, a culture that is to great video games what Italians are to gorgeous sports cars. The majority of the gameplay involves walkwalk ing through labyrinlabyrin thine environenviron ments and killing multicolored, multi-sized monsters, with brief interludes at a home base area for the player to heal and rearm. The player will come across an mediarray of medi eval weapons and magic spells to acac complish this, with a surprisingly complex system allowing for player approaches bebe

Legasista For: PlayStation Network PROS: Deep equipment customization; quirky styling. CONS: Silly narrative; limited animations.

yond simply attacking with a sword. Weapons and equipment can be imbued with a variety of bonuses that enhance their power and change their effectiveness, while the character’s progress allows the player to tailor his abilities to suit different styles and strategies. The game’s graphics are of vintage variety, a throwback to the type more commonly seen on consoles decades ago. The aesthetics and animations are colorful, albeit fairly limited. Combat involves simply steering one’s characters toward the monsters and attacking, a process that can be

complicated by hazards such as traps and poisons. The game takes facing into consideration, which lends the gameplay a depth beyond mindless hack-and-slash action. Legasista takes place in an era when advanced technology has been lost and succeeded in importance by magic. The player takes control of Alto, a villager whose sister has been transformed into a crystal. The plot gets set in motion as he comes upon the complex that could hold a solution to his sister’s conundrum, encountering any number of unhelpful androids and a species of earnest, talking bean sprouts. (In case you forgot this was a Japanese game, its enthusiastically oddball plot will consistently remind you.) The storyline fails to offer much in the way of engagement, as it barrels through the preposterous, fantastically silly premise with abandon, largely stopping only to repeat mundane elements ad nauseam. Like the Diablo series, its pleasures don’t stem from narrative, but the killing of evil creatures and the exploration of strange places. On that note, Legasista is a dungeon-crawling delight.

You see, Dogs was resuscitated at the 11th hour by Square Enix. Originally conceived as spiritual successor True Crime: Hong Kong by gluttonous super producer Activision, it was believed to be on life support until this year.

The game also complicates matters by attempting the daunting task of carving out a niche within the sandbox genre, which has long been roosted over by Rockstar Games. While Dogs never hits the masterful heights of Red Dead Redemption or Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, it is nonetheless a polished time sink with plenty to offer. The experience begins with a wellcrafted, absorbing storyline centered on Wei Shen, a deep undercover Hong Kong police officer who moonlights as a Triad enforcer. Like the best crime classics of yore, Dogs boils over with 2K GAMES, ACTIVISION, BLIZZARD, SQUARE ENIX,

dramatic tension, brutally violent twists and stellar voice acting. Multifarious and aberrant characters brim with life, animated by voices from Tom Wilkinson, Lucy Liu, Emma Stone and Will Yun Lee, taking the title role. Occasional graphics hiccups and some stodgy animation can often pull the player out of the fictional Hong Kong metropolis, but it is never enough to deter the game’s best elements. Those include an expansive, open world ripe for exploration in parkour fashion and profound fighting sequences. Shen often is largely outnumbered but never far from a repertoire of destructive combat maneuvers and counter-attacks that take more than a handful of pages from the Arkham City playbook.

Sleeping Dogs For: PC, PS3, X360 | Price: $59.99 Rated: Mature PROS: Weighty and adult-centered storyline; good fighting mechanics. CONS: Graphics, animations can appear stiff; missions can become tedious. The game is also rife with Square Enix trademarks, including minimal RPG components that help tailor the experience to each player. Elsewhere, the game’s patchwork driving and vehicular shootouts crackle with Need for Speed and Burnout nods. It all adds up to a lengthy experience that will undoubtedly give the player a sticking grip within the twilight hours of the game. Even with a few blemishes from a troubled production, you won’t stop until you put Sleeping Dogs to rest.

Mario’s got the Midas touch ALAN SIMMEr | Pulse Writer

T

he hero of the Mushroom Kingdom takes a page from Scrooge McDuck in his newest 2-D adventure: It’s all about the coins for Mario and Luigi. The most exciting part of New Super Mario Bros. 2 is Coin Rush mode, where players grab as many golden shinys as possible from three levels in a row. The total is doubled at the end of every level — provided Mario hits the top of the flagpole — so coins from the first stage are worth eight times as much at the end. When paired with a short time limit, this introduces a fun strategic element. Players have to balance scooping up every coin possible with getting power-ups and making sure they’ll cross the finish line before it’s too late. A high score can be saved and shared with friends, so look forward to a continual game of one-upmanship. But don’t get too excited about the return of Raccoon Mario: That classic tail is used mostly for its hovering abilities, adding precision and distance to standard jumps. This is due to the level design, which feels more familiar than fresh. The flying ability demands levels with vertical depth, but the too-few instances where secrets are hidden skyward are broadly telegraphed. The new gold flower is pretty fun, if of limited utility, which is how the whole game feels. It’s a Mario title that’s just OK, though that still puts it well ahead of most games.

Hey, so how awesome is the new 3DS XL? Pretty awesome! Thanks for asking. The bigger screen makes the 3-D deeper and the sweet spot bigger. But while the screen is huge, the system isn’t; it’s barely bigger than a PS Vita. The new matte finish looks great, and the XL feels great in hand. Add a better stylus and real buttons for Home/Start/ Select, and you’ve got a winner.

It’s time to say goodbye to the wasteland of summer TV — so long, terrible reality shows and reruns! — and give a big hello to your old favorites. Sure, there’s a new crop of shows to wade through, featuring some old Friends (Matthew perry’s Go On) and fresh faces (Revolution’s tracy Spiridakos). But there are some great older shows you’re not watching. Here are some suggestions for old shows that might be new to you — and are definitely worth tuning into this fall.

“Who WAntS to get WeiRD AnD pLAy Mario Kart?” Don’t Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 Tuesday, Oct. 23 @ 8:30 PM, ABC The humor in this quirky sitcom borders on absurdist, right down to the casting of James Van Der Beek as James Van Der Beek. The setup: Fresh-faced Midwesterner June (Dreama Walker) moves in with amoral Chloe (Krysten Ritter). After failing to scare June out of the big city, Chloe tries to teach her the ways of New York — by having sex with June’s scummy fiance on top of June’s birthday cake, for instance. In the pilot, after making June get back an heirloom ottoman she sold, Chloe cuts it open to pull out a bag of drugs, asking, “Who wants to get weird and play Mario Kart?” And with that, I was sold. — Alan S., associate editor

“Glee Without itS heAVy hitteRS WouLD Be LiKe A DiVA Without heR high noteS.” Glee Thursday, Sept. 13 @ 8 PM, Fox Glee heads into its fourth season very much switching up its own game: Instead of focusing on a high school show choir (or glee club, as they call it) in small-town Ohio, Season 4 will be following the big-city adventures of its graduating seniors (and some of the show’s biggest stars) as they chase their showbiz dreams to New York City. If the experiment works, it will succeed where others have failed (Saved by the Bell: The College Years). But as its best characters were slated to graduate anyway, the show has little choice: Glee without its heavy hitters like Rachel ((Lea Michele), Mercedes (Amber Riley) and Kurt (Chris Colfer) would be like a powerhouse diva without her high notes. — Amie S., writer

The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Monday — Thursday @ 10 PM, Comedy Central The 2012 presidential election is just a few, short months away, and with all the political hubbub going on in Iowa and across the country, nothing serves as a better breath of fresh air than Jon Stewart and The Daily Show. Obviously Stewart is funny year-round. But it’s when he is taking potshots at politicians that he is at his best. And best of all, viewers will actually learn something while avoiding the atrociousness of 24-hour news stations. Stewart always refers to himself as a comedian, often noting he airs after South Park.. But underneath the show’s funny gags is serious journalism. And sometimes Stewart covers the news better than the professionals. — Chris E., online

“gRipping, ABSoRBing AnD often nRight CReepy.” DoWnRight Criminal Minds Wednesday, Sept. 26 @ 8 PM, CBS This CBS crime drama, in its eighth season, is one of the most gripping, absorbing and often downright creepy shows on the tube, year in and year out. The FBI’s Behaviorial Analysis Unit tracks some pretty disturbing serial killers, and the action tends to focus more on the criminal than the crime. It’s a stand-out ensemble cast, too, and there’s not one on BAU team – Hotchner (thomas gibson)) Rossi Matthew gray (Joe Mantegna), Morgan (Shemar Moore), JJ (A.J. Cook), Reid (Matthew gubler), Garcia (Kristin Vangsness) and Prentiss (paget Brewster)) who isn’t riveting at center stage. Brewster is gone again, and her replacement, Jeanne tripplehorn as Alex Blake, could spell trouble for the team, especially Director Strauss (Jayne Atkinson).). Executive producer Erica Messer promises a new unsub (unknown subject, in the parlance of the show) will appear this season, “unofficially” called the Replicator. The killer is replicating crimes the team has already solved — and the name’s more ominous than “copycat,” isn’t it? If you aren’t watching, why not?

Wednesdays @ 9 PM, TLC “A dolla makes me holla, honey boo boo!” Whose jaw didn’t drop when, on an episode of Toddler & Tiaras, 6-year-old Alana thompson shouted the phrase usually reserved for prostitutes. Clearly seeing dolla signs of their own, TLC recruited Thompson’s redneck family quicker’n snot runs from a hog’s nose in December to star in their own reality show, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. “You betta red-necognize,” says the round-the-world snappin’, head bob-and-weavin’ youngster from rural Georgia. Yeah, Honey Boo Boo ain’t too bright. Neither is her redneck family, which includes mom June; sisters pumpkin, Chubbs and Chickadee; and dad Sugar Bear. Yep, I said Sugar Bear. You got mud in yer ears? No worries about getting burned out on this RuPaul-meetsDeliverance train wreck. This guilty pleasure will fizzle faster’n a Pixie Stix buzz on pageant day.

Thursday, Sept. 20 @ 8 PM, NBC I think the magic spark left The Office the day that Michael Scott exited the building. With a mostly unremarkable season without the titular character already wrapped up, it is more important than ever that the writers step up their game. How do we live in a post-Steve Carell world? Is it even possible? These characters have yet to prove themselves in the absence of their bumbling manager. That is why this season will be must-watch TV: It is make or break time. To this day, I still watch Seasons 1-5 on almost continual repeat. But if the cast and writers can’t seriously step things up this season, it is time for The Office to go out of business. Your move, NBC. — Jared M., writer

Project Runway Thursdays @ 8 PM, Lifetime What’s better than watching amazing (and some not-so-amazing) designs parade down the catwalk? All the cattiness between the contestants while they assemble the creations, of course! Not that I blame them. Creating a masterpiece from scratch that falls within heidi Klum’s everchanging guidelines, all within 24 hours and on a limited budget, is enough to put anyone on edge. Throw in the diverse personalities and styles of the crew and you’ve got enough drama to rival Days of Our Lives.. With challenges ranging from a Times Square Anniversary party to a sweet creation made almost entirely out of candy, the challenges have brought out the best and worst of the designers who are pulling out all the stops to impress the judges: Klum, nina garcia and Michael Kors. Good, bad or otherwise. When $100,000 is on the line, who knows what will come down that catwalk next? In the words of tim gunn,, this is really a “make it work” moment for them.

“you’Ve got enough DRAMA to RiVAL Days of our lives.”

Parenthood Tuesday, Sept. 11 @ 9 PM, NBC Every family has one: a brother who moves through life like a wrecking ball, a sister-in-law who can only be classified as a control freak or a mother who put down her dreams to build a family and now looks back and questions what she stands for. For three seasons, Parenthood has captivated audiences by taking everyday dynamics of family life, both immediate and extended, and creating a compelling, relatable show that has viewers coming back every week to convince themselves that maybe their family really is normal. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry … and you’ll tune in the following week. I promise.

If you told a young Nikki Anders that she would grow up to choose new actors for a hit television show, she wouldn’t have believed you. And she definitely wouldn’t have believed that process, itself, would be televised. “Are you kidding me? No,” Anders, one of the judges on Oxygen’s The Glee Project, said in a phone interview. “There weren’t judges of reality TV shows growing up, so that was never in the cards.” But Nikki Hassman, as she was known growing up in Waverly, might well have become an Olympic-level gymnast or a world-class pianist instead. She excelled in both gymnastics and piano competitions before she even hit her teenage years. Instead, at 14, she began singing and recording, eventually moving to Nashville to study at Belmont University, performed with ’90s Christian group Avalon and met her husband, Adam Anders, in the intervening years. Fast forward to her gig now as a judge on The Glee Project, and Anders is grateful for all of those experiences. “Obviously my singing is an asset” on The Glee Project, she said. “It’s kind of one of those freak things we would never plan.” The Glee Project is now in the midst of its second season on Oxygen, but Anders is done filming and even has a new baby at home. She said she hopes they’ll renew her show, which picks actors for a seven-episode guest-starring role on Fox’s Glee, for another season. “It was tough doing it while I was pregnant,” Anders said. “But the kids were really inspiring.” New this season is a roster of 14 hopefuls instead of 12 like the previous season. Anders said it was because there was an

“overload of talent” at auditions and the judges and producers had a tough time narrowing the field. And that talent is as diverse as the current Glee cast — and beyond. “I think the overarching theme is, ‘Let’s find somebody that can inspire the writers and inspire (Glee co-creator) Ryan (Murphy) to write a character for them’; that is thing number one,” Anders said. Assuming it gets picked up for another season — and that assumes that Glee itself gets picked up again — Anders does have advice for wannabe contestants. “This show and this competition is so much about showing your true colors; not putting on airs, not showing us what you think we want you to be,” she said. “It truly is about how true to yourself you can be and inspiring others with your confidence.”

“I have too much respect for the people writing what I consider to be ‘classical’ music today to have my little pop confections considered as being in the same realm,” Kahane writes on his website. “This is not to say that I don’t think my pop music is of artistic value, but rather to say let’s not kid ourselves by thinking that the presence of strings, woodwinds and brass doth a classical record make.” This month, Kahane will join the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra for the Midwest premiere of his acclaimed Crane Palimpsest. He calls the piece “an investigation” of blending and blurring genres.

Both Fleetwood Mac alums have unforgettable voices, so don’t miss this chance to hear lindsey Buckingham perform at the englert Theatre in iowa City. in this intimate, solo show, Buckingham will showcase his distinctive guitar-picking style with songs from his most recent album, Seeds We Sow, along with a variety of Fleetwood Mac classics. “as i’ve grown as an artist, i’ve gotten more and more in touch with my center, and that center is voice and guitar. Over time it has become increasingly vital to express more with less; that is my touchstone now, and the embodiment of that philosophy is what will be largely represented in the new show,” Buckingham said.

owntown Cedar Falls’ annual art block party, ARTapalooza on Main, attracts large crowds of visitors who come to view the juried fine art show and sale and linger to enjoy the music, children’s activities and dine in the restaurants. The seventh annual event is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 8, featuring 45 artists and activities on the sidewalks and streets along a three-block area of Main Street. Admission is free. “We’ve grown stronger every year in terms of attendance. The community and people from around the area want to be downtown to enjoy the event, shop, visit with the artists and dine,” said Jan Andersen of Community Main Street. ARTapalooza also has gained regional draw among artists, said chairwoman Barbara Brown. From the 60 or so artists who apply for the festival, 45 are selected. There are 10 to 15 artists per block. “That’s a good number because people have a chance to walk all the blocks to see everything and walk back around to make purchases. We like to showcase Iowa artists.” Andersen described the size of the event as a strength. “The community can financially support the artists who are there, and we can showcase a vibrant downtown. The serpentine roads help with the flow, and shopkeepers like the business it brings.” Thursday Painters will be on the street, painting en plein air, and there will be musical entertainment in each block and “On the Green” at Fourth and Main streets. It’s also a family-oriented event, says committee member Sue Hansen. “Usually art shows aren’t meant for families, although they might have a few things for kids to do. ARTapalooza has lots of ways to entertain kids while parents enjoy the art.” Numerous downtown stores, including Sweet Basil Market, Kitchen Essentials & Gifts, Vintage Iron, Pursuing Picasso, Runner’s Flat and Art & More, will have children’s activities in front of their stores, such as canvas painting, tie-dying T-shirts, a Lego tent and more. The Hearst Center for the Arts will have face-painting, and children at the Hearst Center painted on tiles that will be sold to raise funds for future art activities at ARTapalooza. ARTapalooza will award two cash prizes for best of show ($150) and honorable mention ($100), with artists serving as jurors. Criteria includes quality of artwork and booth appearance. Awards will be presented to the winning artists at 1 p.m. Other committee members include Moria Brown, secretary, and Penny Azbill, Beckie Scheel, Alice Dolgener, Mare Schmidt and Amanda Ubben. word the

SHarp ObjecTS | GiLLian FLynn To read Gillian Flynn’s novel, Sharp Objects, is to go down a rabbit hole and get stuck, scared and lonely. The stomach-wrenching thriller, more psychological warfare than mystery, is a terrifying place that Flynn convinces you is normal. Camille Preaker, the estranged daughter of a wealthy and emotionally distant Missouri matriarch, returns to her one-stoplight town to cover the murder of one girl and the disappearance of another. She maneuvers through the situation with heavy drinking and the desire to pick up a blade again, just once more, to carve another word into her heavily marked skin. The whodunit is obvious early on, but it doesn’t matter. Sharp Objects is less about who the monster is than what the monster will do next. — Amie Steffen, Pulse Writer

pIcK

DeaD STarS | BrUcE WaGnEr Dead Stars is a manic, hypersexualized take-down of Hollywood wannabes and strivers, a relentless, wickedly funny, pornographic flash on the eddies of fame in the present moment. The text is splattered with font changes, profanity, emoticons and sex acts so vividly described that many chapters are marked with the warning “EXPLICIT.” Wagner throws us in teenagers-first, where we are confronted by a terrifying world of short attention spans, casual drug-taking and readily available porn. There are places where this book bogs down, yet overall it is a total leap, a stylistic satiric attack, a XXX accomplishment. — Carolyn Kellogg, Los Angeles Times

THe cOlDeST War | ian trEGiLLiS With The Coldest War, Ian Tregillis continues an impressive fantasy/alternative-history trilogy he began with Bitter Seeds. The first novel, set in Britain’s darkest hours of World War II, pitted British warlocks against young Nazi Ubermenschen. Now it’s 1963. The Russians rule everything east of Paris, and it seems only a matter of time before they’ll invade a battered Britain. Tregillis’ breathtaking set pieces include an attempted ambush of an invisible assassin and the rescue of a savant from an enemy stronghold. Some of the seeds he planted in the first novel flower bitterly and impressively in this one. — Jim Higgins, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

THe aGe Of MIracleS | KarEn thomPSon WaLKEr The Age of Miracles is a poignant hybrid, a sci-fi/coming of age novel that celebrates human resilience even as it breaks your heart. Smartly and compassionately executed by Walker, the book is a heartfelt story told in a reverent, elegiac tone. The novel’s wondrous momentum rolls on with the insistence of the restless surf that swallows the beachfront homes; you can’t stop reading if you try. Walker refuses easy solutions, instead offering up the revolutionary and bittersweet idea that stolen moments can give any life meaning. Miracles do happen, she seems to say. You just have to know where to look. — Connie Ogle, McClatchy Newspapers

MONKey MIND: a MeMOIr Of aNxIeTy | DaniEL Smith As a memoir of illness, Daniel Smith’s Monkey Mind is a perfect 10. The author’s account of his experience with anxiety disorder holds nothing back. Hilarious, well-informed and intelligent, Smith conveys the seriousness of his situation without becoming pathetic or unrelatable, and what’s more, he offers useful information for both sufferers and nonsufferers. Monkey Mind never shies away from the truth. As important as his commitment to unrelenting self-revelation is his awareness of the people listening to this story. He gives us a reason to stay with him on every page. — Marion Winik, Newsday

ChuCK ShePherd q In the town of Vaughn, N.M. (pop. 500), perhaps the only ones not authorized to carry guns are the town’s two police officers. Chief Ernest Armijo had been convicted in 2011 of criminal nonsupport of a wife and two sons, and among the conditions of probation was the prohibition on gun possession. Deputy Brian Bernal has his own domestic issue: a conviction for family violence that bars him, under federal law, from carrying. q The only unlimited-issue U.S. visa allowing fast-lane entrance for certain foreign workers is the O-1, available to those (e.g., scientists, technology engineers) who, in the opinion of the State Department, demonstrate “extraordinary ability.” An O-1 recently went to British journalist Piers Morgan, whose extraordinariness seems limited to replacing Larry King, and another to Shera Bechard, Playboy’s Miss November 2010, whose other accomplishment seems to be the creation of an online photo-sharing experience called “Frisky Friday.”
