eel like you need a little work on your abs? See Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood perform their interactive comedy improv act, and your stomach will hurt from laughing so hard, you’ll think you’ve had a real workout. The quick-witted comedians from the Emmy-nominated TV series Whose Line is it Anyway? will perform at the GallagherBluedorn Performing Arts Center in Cedar Falls in April. Mochrie, an alumnus of Toronto’s famous Second City comedy troupe, describes the show as “An evening of interactive belly laughs supplied by improv icon Colin Mochrie and eye candy for the visually impaired by Brad Sherwood. The most fun you can have with a theater full of people that’s legal and doesn’t include washing up.” Sherwood’s version: “The world’s funniest improv show, featuring the brilliant comic stylings of Brad Sherwood and his addle-brained sidekick, Colin Mochrie. It is the longest running international improv show on planet Earth, we think.” The duo performs between 40 and 60 shows each year, and as grueling as the travel gets, they get a kick out making people laugh. And they are such experts at it. Pulse talked to the funny duo to get a taste of how they work. Here’s how that went:

best. Even if it’s something you know nothing about, when we’re doing the scene, everything we say is the truth. You may think you know everything about nuclear physics, but you didn’t know anything, really, until we started talking about it. In our world, we’re the experts. Brad: A seasoned purist is able to work with anyone on stage and turn anything into something entertaining and funny. But there’s something about working with someone you trust. That makes it fun for us. We’re running as fast as we can in the dark, trying not to run into a tree. Almost every show someone yells out something like ‘gynecologist’ or ‘proctologist’ when we ask for occupations. That leaves us nowhere to go with a scene. They really don’t want to see two middle-aged men doing something about proctology. Three jokes, and you’re done.

Who came up with Mousetraps? Colin: Oh, that horrible game. Brad came up with it, but I’m trying to get rid of it. The audience just wants to see us in pain, I’m pretty sure. There are no tricks to it. We’re blindfolded and walking on mousetraps. There’s nothing we won’t do for a laugh, Improv comedy is like risk-taking on and that’s just really sad. I’ve done a cousteroids. How do you physically pre- ple of shows with my back thrown out, so pare for such a high-wire act? it was really fun then to do Mousetraps. Sometimes I hear the things coming out of my mouth and think, ‘Wow, that was just so random.’ What’s the worst experience you’ve

ever had on stage?

Brad: Things happen so fast that they’re

gone in the next instance. I remember other things like, we do corporate gigs, and we were at a dude ranch in Arizona when a rainstorm was starting to come down. We’re on top of a mesa, on stage with a grid of electrical equipment overhead. We’re hoping we can get enough of the show

out so the audience is entertained, but nothing is more distracting than having at the back of your mind that you could be struck by lightning. Talk about unmitigated stage fright! Colin: That’s the beauty and the curse of improv. When you’ve done a scene, it’s gone forever. I don’t remember. Sometimes the suggestions aren’t weird, maybe just dull and a great scene comes out of it.

Part of our job is to go beyond the audience’s expectations and raise the bar a little. Great suggestions make the show that much more fun and gives us more to work with. How long do you see yourselves doing this act? Brad: Forever. We’ll always be together. Whether we’re in our 80s playing retirement villages or cruise ships, I see us as the Golden Girls of Improv. Colin: Yeah, I’m Bea Arthur. For me, it’s the most fun that I do in this business. What I love about what Brad and I do is that we’re in charge of our own destiny. If a show sucks, it sucks because we weren’t any good. It’s not like TV or movies where you have writers and directors and executives in control and editing out some of your best stuff. The onus is on us.

Finger pickin’ good Throughout his career, Cory Branan has been too punk for country, too country for punk and too Memphis for Nashville. He has proven himself as a top-notch songwriter and fierce lyricist. He’s a hyperdynamic performer who can fingerpick finer than ’60s Greenwich Village folkies and brutally strum like a proto punk shredder. Branan will perform with Tim Easton at CSPS Hall in Cedar Rapids on April 21. Raised in Akron, Ohio, alt-country singer/ songwriter Tim Easton was influenced by a combination of pop icons (The Beatles, Kiss)

and bluegrass/folk legends (Doc Watson, John Prine). He’s been playing on the fringes of the alt country scene since the ’90s, compared favorably to the likes of Jeff Tweedy of Wilco and Jay Farrar of Son Volt as one of the genre’s leading talents. Cory Branan

HEARD THAT

THE COLT WALKERS TRAIL OF BLOOD AND BROKEN HEARTS

T

he Colt Walkers stand out in Ames, a town that doesn’t have a very active Americana or country scene. But even if they played among a glut of roots and country rockers, The Colt Walkers wouldn’t be lost in the noise with their unique blend of outlaw country blues and roots rock.

piano and dancing mandolin licks add flourish to the songs that often mention the devil, betrayal and cheap wine. A few of the songs, such as the title track and Follow Me Out to the Woods, have the proper minor key and grit to go with the lyrics.

The Colt Walkers debut, Trail of Blood and Broken Hearts, was a long time in the making. The group has performed a mix of covers and original material for years. The album is a compilation of what makes the Colt Walkers unique: dark poetic lyrics that blend sarcasm and sincerity set to toe-tapping rhythms. The upbeat sounds of most of the album belie the dark lyrics that saturate it. Bright

The album begins with a fun, danceable track, Dustin off My Vinyl. That and the following song, Cheaper Women, have familiar country and honky-tonk themes — an old truck, old music, cheap wine and spending your last dollar on drinks — but with a tonguein-cheek playfulness. The third song, Trail of Blood and Broken Hearts, takes less of a party tone. It’s a beautifully sculpted ballad of two briefly compatible people, “just two practiced liars who weren’t fooling no one.”

JOHN MOLSEED | PULSE WRITER Murder ballads also abound on the album. In Follow Me Out to the Woods, a fat, heavy bass accompanies equally heavy lyrics as the victim is bade to dig his own grave. Wander and Wonder is a nicely crafted version of a man who dispatches his wife and her lover. Fun stuff. Balancing those ballads are Don’t You Pray for Me, a breakupstyle song that almost sounds like it belongs on a pop album, and Last Time Around, a song about constantly messing up in life. The album ends on the opposite end of the spectrum. Prodigal Son is a funny narrative of someone on a full-tilt self-destruction course. Despite the lyrics, they’re delivered with a quick-paced, catchy beat; playful organ; and bright, harmonized vocals. It’s a fitting end to

an album that is enjoyable, fun and different from anything out of Nashville, let alone Ames.

MODEST MOUSE STRANGERS TO OURSELVES

KENDRICK LAMAR TO PIMP A BUTTERFLY

N

ame a hip-hop masterpiece, an album of stunning creativity and gamechanging vision, from the past 10 years. Having trouble? That’s because, in the main, hip-hop’s greatest influence over the past decade hasn’t really been heard in hip-hop itself, but rather, in other forms that have by this point fully assimilated the genre as one of myriad available influences. The one exception to this general observation would have to be good kid, m.A.A.d. city, the 2012 debut from Compton’s Kendrick Lamar. Turns out good kid was pretty much just a practice run,

as good as it was. With To Pimp a Butterfly, Lamar has made an artistic leap not unlike the one perpetrated by Radiohead between OK Computer and Kid A. Lamar is a frantically inventive rapper, a man who rhymes as if he’s trying desperately to keep pace with the speed of his own imagination, and that rare writer able to see nuance and subtlety within a culture that values neither. Ultimately, it’s the way Lamar has assimilated the hypervirtuosic influence of producer Flying Lotus into his own vision that makes this album such a gravity-defying intellectual and visceral face-melter. — Jeff Miers, Tribune News Service

DAVE PARIS JURY OF MY PEERS

C

edar Rapids guitarist Dave Paris can make guitars sing. In Jury of My Peers, he lets them do all the singing. A compilation of guitar-fueled rock ballads, Jury of My Peers is all instrumental. Most of the time the guitars are spraying a flurry of 1980s-style lead riffs. The album is like a compilation of 1980s and ’90s power ballads but without nine minutes of repetitive lyrics. The final track, Author of Fate, has a big anthem sound to it. It puts a clear punctuation on the album but also demonstrates that instrumentation alone, even in a rock album, can add enough gravitas to be captivating.

For Penguin, Paris’ staccato picking seems to simulate birds talking. While it’s Paris’ leads that carry the album, accompaniment adds the right depth and layers to the songs to give them their full impact.

Pistol pairs nicely with Ansel, which oddly applies ’80s New Wave production to the indie-rock sound of the ‘90s. This album is a distilled treat for fans of vintage rock ballads and screaming guitar solos — like an all-syrup Slurpee or just the center of an Oreo. — John Molseed, Pulse

8 PULSE

odest Mouse has always been hard to predict. And with eight years and boatloads of starts and stops since its last album, there was no telling how Strangers to Ourselves was going to sound. Strangers to Ourselves finds Modest Mouse moving forward, but in all sorts of directions. The biggest risk on the album, Pistol, could oddly end up becoming its most successful song — a weird tale imagining Andrew Cunanan before he murdered five people, including designer Gianni Versace, set to an industrial dance beat that could find its way to pop radio and clubs. It would be a fascinating new direction for the band, except nothing else on Strangers sounds like it.

Paris’ lead guitar has more than a one-note voice. Paris plays an echoing, crying blues guitar in the appropriately named Blue. In Wood Wire, Wind, some harmonica and slide guitar add to a rustier blues style.

Funky Song of Praise has a heavy bass and funk guitar to give it a funk sound. Competent layering gives Seeds on Stones its soul as well. Night Before Last features adept violin bowing.

Fun and frustration in Type-0 ALAN SIMMER | PULSE WRITER

N

ever before have I been so split about a game as with Final Fantasy Type-0 HD. I can’t decide if the long-awaited port is my precious — or my pernicious. Bear with me while my two halves try to work it out. They loves us! There are 14 characters to choose from — many conveniently named after a deck of cards and therefore easy to keep track of — each with different weapons-es and fighting styles. They hates us! That’s too much to learn all at once, too many to keep leveled up and equipped! And the game does us no favors — we can’t check the commands-es for characters unless we’re at save points! They loves us! But the variety is nice, and while the learning curve might be pretty steep, climbing that hill leads to a really engaging real-time combat system with a gritty edge to it. It’s clear the game is meant to be lived in, with a lot of depth to explore. They hates us! Who wants to live in a world where the camera movement can give us motion sicknesses? The visuals are awkwardly framed for a large screen, and while the visuals are HD, they don’t measure up to Final Fantasy games from the last generation of consoles. They loves us! That’s because the game was originally released in 2011 for the PSP! It wasn’t built from the ground up for the new consoles, and this is the first stateside release. They hates us! Does that also explain the tricksy limits, like only being able to accept one side quest at a time? Or being offered quests we can no longer finish? Or not being able to save or switch characters on the world map? It burns us!

For: PS4, XB1 Price: $59.99 Rated: Mature Pros: Seven, Ace, Eight. Cons: Rem, Cinque, Jack. They loves us! ... Yeah, we don’t have much to say about that. We lost many precious hours-es and much XP after fighting along the route to the next mission and then dying. We suggests saving often. But the fighting — which makes up the core of the game, after all — is really, really fun. We loves the satisfaction of executing a well-timed killstrike. They hates us! But there are so many skills and we can equip so few of them! Yet there can be too many choices to be made easily in real time! None of that matters-es, because so much of the rest of the game distracts us and annoys us! It ruins it! They loves us! We wouldn’t say ruined, we would say we’ll stay together until the kids go to college. We can’t accuse the game of being too easies, either. Type-0 is definitely a Final Fantasy fan’s Final Fantasy, if we gets what we means. Now excuse us while we throw ourselves into a volcano.

Morningstar is a game that should be easily recognizable to PC gamers of the 1990s, where digital storytelling thrived in the form of puzzle-laden point-and-click adventures. Adapted from a 2009 Flash game, Morningstar is a handsomely retro journey to a barren alien planet that just begs to be escaped from. The player takes control of Powell, one of three crew members aboard the Morningstar, a small spacecraft transporting innocuous merchandise such as leather jackets, fish and firecrackers. The ship has crashed on a planet ominously called Deadrock. It’s up to Powell to repair the ship, heal the captain, figure out why the

Allen College, a specialized college offering undergraduate and graduate education in nursing and health sciences, is opening several new nursing and health sciences programs in response to growing demand for its graduates in the health care workforce. Allen will offer bachelor’s degree programs in dental hygiene and public health and graduatelevel programs in occupational therapy and health professions education. No other bachelor’s degree programs in dental hygiene and public health are currently being offered by Iowa colleges. Allen College is planning to admit its first dental hygiene students no later than this fall. The public health program will address current and future needs for entry-level public health workers and prepare students for graduate study in public health and related fields. The occupational therapy program will graduate students who are qualified to work as occupational therapists. Kramer said Iowa has only one other occupational therapy program. The BLS projects a growing demand for occupational therapists over the next several years. Allen College is planning to open the occupational therapy program in fall 2015, pending final approval by Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education. The doctor of education in health professions education will address a growing need for nurses and other health educators who hold doctoral degrees. Iowa has a shortage of nurses and other health professionals with this level of education. The new doctoral program, the only one of its type to be offered by an Iowa college, began admitting students in fall 2014 and will be offered entirely online. Allen College currently offers one other doctoral degree program, the doctor of nursing practice. For more information on these and other Allen College programs and admission, call 226-2014.
