Lineup set for Cedar Falls RAGBRAI stop

JOHN MOLSEED | PULSE WRITER

R

AGBRAI riders and local revelers can catch music for all ages on two stages in Cedar Falls. Every year, the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa has a different route and theme. However, each time the route has taken riders through Cedar Falls there has been one constant. “We have played every Cedar Falls RAGBRAI stop ever,” said Bob Dorr of Bob Dorr and the Blue Band. “We’re the only band on the planet that can make that claim.” The Blue Band is the opening entertainment at 5 p.m. on the main stage in the west parking lot of the UNIDome for the July 22 overnight stop in Cedar Falls. Hairball, a 1980s hair metal tribute band, will headline the evening entertainment at 9:30 p.m. Hairball puts on a multi-media event with costumes, lights and effects as an homage to classic arena rock acts like Van Halen, Journey, KISS, Motley Crue, Aerosmith and others. New Black 7 and the Devon Worley band round out the rest of the main stage entertainment. Registered riders and participants get into the show at no cost, as does anyone wearing the official Cedar Falls RAGBRAI T-shirt. Entertainment begins on the south side of the McLeod Center at 12:30 p.m. with Waterloo singer/songwriter Karla Ruth. “To be part of such a celebration is always fun,” Ruth said, adding the opportunity is an honor. “We’re on the bill with a lot of talented groups.”

This is the first time Ruth will be part of official entertainment for a RAGBRAI crowd. For Ruth and other local performers, it’s a chance to get their music in front of people from all over the country. “I’d love for them to take some Karla Ruth music home with them,” Ruth said. Ruth will be joined by Deb Niermann on vocals and mandolin. They will be followed by Decorah blues roots duo Joe and Vicki Price. Cedar Valley rock band Dylan Sires and Neighbors will close out entertainment on that stage. The main stage entertainment features more of a party-crowd lineup, said Rick Vanderwall, RAGBRAI Cedar Falls entertainment co-chair. The two stages are close together so locals and riders won’t have trouble finding the music, he said. “My point of view was to include local musicians,” Vanderwall said. “We have all this talent in the Cedar Valley and all these people coming to the Cedar Valley who may or may not know the talent we have.” Dylan Sires and Neighbors have been gaining a following and toured internationally last year. “They’re really hot right now,” Vanderwall said. “They seem to be on the rise.” Hairball will appeal to people who are out to have a good time while RAGBRAI is in town, he added. “It’s music that the 35- to 45-year-old crowd knows,” he said.

Drinkers with biking problems, rejoice. Brewers along this year’s RAGBRAI route are teaming up to make a ride-themed beer. Back Pocket Brewing Co., of Coralville, Lion Bridge Brewing Co., of Cedar Rapids, Big Grove Brewery, of Solon, and Single Speed Brewing Co., of Cedar Falls,

worked together to create a Belgian ale called Centripetal Force. The beer, although Belgian-style, is not exactly a traditional Belgian ale and will be heavy on hibiscus flavor, said Dave Morgan, founder of Single Speed. The beer will be available at spots along the RAGBRAI route.

But there’s so much more going on, lads and lasses. Whisky tastings, storytelling, children’s theater, a parade, ancestry workshops, an Irish language workshop, a 5K (of course), a

HEARD THAT

JEFF MIGUEL PERSEVERANCE

P

erseverance is a smooth, expertly arranged debut from talented Iowa saxophonist Jeff Miguel. His talents on saxophone are on full display. Miguel delivers smooth tones, dynamic changes and an ability to climb up and down the scales with precision and clarity.

JOHN MOLSEED | PULSE WRITER in a complex genre, doing both well. The album starts with an attentiongrabbing intro in the titular track. While saxophone usually leads the melodies in the song, adept keys, guitar and other instruments get to carry parts of songs.

His technical proficiency on saxophone is apparent and just one of many reasons this album is an impressive release let alone an artist’s debut.

In Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, the drums do much more than sit in the background, accentuating the rhythm of the song while saxophone and keys chase each others’ melodies and expertly play off their improvisational themes.

The record is a collection of his own jazz compositions, and Miguel shows his musical talents in playing and arranging

Bass gets some spotlight time in appealing introductions to Lingering Allure, pairing with a piano, and in

Requiescence where a bowed bass and saxophone provide a duo intro. A toe-tapping drum intro starts This Time. Lingering Allure fittingly ends with a fading piano, whereas Make it Plain! defies its title by carrying a funky, ringing improvisational groove. Miguel’s jazz arrangements are fun and sophisticated but not confusing. The chord structures are easy to follow but not so simple as to be predictable. This is an album made by someone who knows and understands jazz and has something new and interesting to offer the genre.

LIL WAYNE FWA

MIGUEL WILDHEART

O

flowed across the eras for inspiration while yielding a seductive radio hit, Adorn.

On his previous album, Kaleidoscope Dream, the singer got to have it both ways, with an ambitious song cycle that

Wildheart is slightly less convincing, with more songs that ebb and flow between static and ecstatic, while juggling weirdness and familiarity that sometimes verges on cliche. On the closing trio of songs — the erotic Flesh, the soul-folk Leaves and the guitar-stoked Face the Sun — he builds solid intros into the kind of anthems that suggest Miguel has dreams of headlining arenas one day. Just as the album is ending, he finds the perfect combination of pop hookiness and understated introspection.

n his third album, Wildheart, Miguel Pimental turns to Los Angeles as his muse. It’s a place where everything seems possible and also a destination where dreams go to die. Miguel’s narrators negotiate the space between, in the same way that he’s striving to carve out a career in R&B that feeds commercial radio’s need for hits and easily digested songs, and his own inclinations toward a deeper synthesis of his influences that is focused on big concepts and cohesive albums.

VARIOUS ARTISTS NINA REVISITED: A TRIBUTE TO NINA SIMONE

T

his timely tribute to the troubled, highly influential singer Nina Simone, known for her searing songs during the civil-rights era, serves as a companion piece to the riveting new documentary What Happened, Miss Simone? Unfortunately, though it features a stellar lineup (Lauryn Hill, Usher, Gregory Porter, Lalah Hathaway, others), the album is grossly overproduced, mostly by Hill. We’re talking helium-balloon synthesizers, mountainous background vocals, gratuitous electronic noises, inflated instrumental lines (is that Liberace’s ghost playing the piano on The Wind Is Wild?), with the knocking snare and thumping

bass of a club mix riding over everything. A few tracks — produced by pianist Robert Glasper — are tasteful and attractive, including Jazmine Sullivan’s reggae version of the Randy Newman screed Baltimore; Common’s rap and Hathaway’s scat on We Are Young and Gifted and Black; I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl, done with triplet slow-dance panache by Simone’s daughter, Lisa Simone; and an experimental electronic treatment of I Put a Spell on You by up-and-comer Alice Smith, which achieves a kind of nightmarish appeal. Bottom line? See the documentary. Buy Simone’s albums. Skip this. — Paul De Barros, The Seattle Times

E

arly into his Free Weezy Album, “Rest in peace to Cash Money Weezy,” Lil Wayne raps. “Gone but not forgotten.” The rapper has yet to resolve the nasty legal battle with his longtime label, Cash Money Records, but he’s continuing to sate fans awaiting his studio album by offering another project, this time a fully realized album as a free mixtape. Shortened to just FWA, it was a surprise release exclusively to Tidal during the Fourth of July weekend. Last month, Wayne announced he was joining Jay Z’s fledgling streaming venture as a coowner. He celebrated his stake with the fiery Glory, which opens the new album. Wayne’s new mixtape is a raw, incendiary offering of relentless rhymes, tight production and, like this year’s Sorry 4 the Wait 2, features some of his best work in recent memory. Appearances from Young Jeezy, Wiz Khalifa, Cory Gunz, Bibi Bourelly and more dot the 15-track project. — Gerrick Kennedy, Los Angeles Times

It’s so much more fun with it in the rearview mirror, especially bopping along to the pop-punk beats. — Christinia C. Finna Get Loose by Diddy feat. Joshua James’ work reflects a distinctly American ache, a yearning for a big sky and an open road. He’s on the open road right now and bringing his distinctive sound to Cedar Rapids. Beckoned farther west from his Nebraska home by the voices of Jim Morrison and Isaac Brock, he found the mountains of Utah. Strangely familiar, yet refreshingly innovative, James’ songs are devastating in their honesty, working with themes that are by turns elating, melancholic and transcendent. His first two albums, 2007’s The Sun Is Always Brighter and 2009’s Build Me This, topped the year-end ‘Best of iTunes’ lists and earned rave reviews from Paste and Esquire, among others. After an international tour, he headed back to Utah in 2011 to grow vegetables, raise goats and chickens and develop a heightened connection to the living things around him. It was from this little farm, dubbed Willamette Mountain, his latest batch of songs arose, an album appropriately titled From The Top of Willamette Mountain. While working in a music shop to pay off his first electric bass he had on layaway, Freekbass studied the classics of Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder, Parliament, Bootsy and others. With a bass in one hand and an MPC2000 in the other, Freekbass got his, well, Freek on. An only child from Cincinnati, Freek spent his early years hoping to be a magician. Midwest summers, perfectly pictured Through Sept. 13, visitors to the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art will enjoy the summer as interpreted by more than 60 Iowa artists. The new exhibition, Midwest Summer: Light and Warmth, presents a wide range of style and media unified by a common summer theme. All the works in the exhibition were created during the past three years by artists who live in Iowa. “The exhibition came together beautifully,” said associate curator Kate Kunau, who juried the selections. “I was overwhelmed by the number of talented artists in Iowa. Making my selection was difficult because I was presented with hundreds of amazing artworks

in every style and medium, but I think the chosen works are an excellent reflection of the wide range of talent in this state. I think visitors will enjoy the wide range of styles and media used to interpret summer in so many different ways.” Midwest Summer: Light and Warmth Through Sept. 16 Cedar Rapids Museum of Art crma.org
