PORSCHE

PARADE

2015 FRENCH LICK INDIANA

Story and Photography

Jeffrey Coe

I knew I would attend Porsche Parade in 2015. Indiana wasn’t too bad a drive and I felt the central location would yield a well-attended event with many great Porsches. I had also never visited Indiana and the venue looked interesting. So, when registration opened up in March I was on my desktop signing up for the event. It took six hours due to server issues but I got through it and was rewarded with a special code that allowed me to secure a room at the host hotel, the French Lick Resort. The weeks ticked by as they always do and then the big day was upon me. My son Greg was available and offered to join me on the 12 hour, 850 mile drive so we left bright and early on Saturday morning. Weather was threatening during the entire event but other than about 20 minutes of strong rain in Ohio the weather cooperated and the trip went smoothly.

Now, I knew nothing of French Lick before this event. I had been told that it was the childhood home of basketball great Larry Bird but other than that, nothing. However, it is the home of two “grand” hotels which are over 100 years old each. The French Lick Springs Hotel and the West Baden Springs hotel were frequented by the Chicago elite back in the day, including one Mr. Al Capone. If you’ve been to or have seen the Mount Washington hotel in New Hampshire or remember the Overlook hotel in the movie the Shinning, it is along those same lines. Very large, grand, and with many opulent architectural features. And they celebrate

C H A L L E N G E

their heritage with the furnishings, events, and activities such as period bands dressed in striped shirts and straw hats playing horns, banjos, and even a washboard! After our long trip we were met by a friendly Parade greeting committee who gave us drinks and snacks and told us where to go next. We proceeded to check into the hotel and the event and then had some time to relax before heading to the welcome dinner. Nicely prepared washing bays were set up so that was my next stop in order to give Minty a proper wash after the long 850 mile journey. We then checked out the various displays such November 2015

as the Goodie store, sponsor room, and a special former parade exhibit. Now, bad weather was threatening all day but we got through most of Sunday without seeing a drop of rain. When I saw the sixties welcome dinner had been moved to the parking garage I thought that maybe the organizers had been a little too cautious but sure enough, two hours into the >>>Cars on display in front of the French Lick Resort host hotel

event the rain showed up, but we were none the wiser as the parking garage was dry and filled with partiers, great food, and music. We were pleased to locate the CVR gang which included Phil and his wife Maria as well as Allan and his wife Caroline. We sat with them while we enjoyed a nice meal, music, and socialization. Monday brought concours day. Bright and early I had to get Minty into position in the special “60 4 60” display. The display selected a car from every model year

that the Porsche club has been in existence. Minty represented 1992. There were many incredible cars in the display as well as the historic display and the concours. All these displays had been smoothly moved to covered locations in case of rain, which never did show up. We were in the tennis center while the concours was in the parking garage. I can’t say enough about how smoothly the Parade committee made these last minute weather-related changes. Not even a bump.

After Minty was all cleaned and ready we had time to review the other amazing vehicles and socialize with their owners while we waited for the concours judges. Then something amazing happened to me. I had been talking with fellow car owners all morning about my car and 968s in general when someone tapped me on the shoulder and when I turned to see who it was I was floored. It was Dennis Gage of Discovery/Velocity channel’s My Classic Car show. He was

was doing that. It was all very exciting. So, assuming I don’t end up on the cutting room floor look for Minty and I in a Spring 2016 episode of My Classic Car! On top of that, we took first in class. What a day. Recovering from all the excitement we spent some time relaxing before heading to the President’s dinner. Held at the golf course at West Baden on a hill, overlooking a fantastic view of the course, we spent the evening talking with fellow enthusiast while we watched the sun go down. Porsche 34

had brought the new Club Coupe and Boxster Spyder up to the event so we were able to give them a good look over as well. Tuesday we were up early to take in more of the event. There were many activities and tours that were offered including a trip to the Indianapolis Motor speedway but we decided to hang at the hotel and see everything there. There were many displays set up including a hospitality room filled with vendors hocking their products. Great fun. Tuesday night was the Concours banquet. This event was held in the main atrium of the West Baden resort which happens to have the largest enclosed dome in North America with the exception of the Houston Astrodome. greeted by an amazing sight. Everything was decorated beautifully with hundreds of tables and a main stage. Videos of past Parades were displayed. The videos were very entertaining especially the Parade driving competitions from the late fifties. Imagine a number of 356s being put through their paces all on color film. Everyone laughed as we watched the very unique “rear driving through an obstacle course and into a parking spot” competition. After a delicious dinner, the presentation commenced and we heard from the various attendees including representatives from the Porsche family. A popular activity at any Parade is the “how many Parades have you been to?” Here everyone stands up and are asked to sit down when the number of Parades they have been too has been

called. It is amazing how many members have been to over 50 Parades! This was our fourth Parade so we sat down fairly early. The evening event was capped off by the arrival of Porsche’s newest and heavily anticipated member to their vehicle lineup, the Cayman GT4. In drove a magnificent racing yellow GT4, right through the tables and to the main stage. Everyone got to their feet to catch a glimpse of this special machine as it drove by. You would have thought that Brad and Angelina had just entered the room. After the close of the ceremonies we were able to get a better look at the GT4 and it is certainly an awesome machine, and offered with a manual transmission only! I like it. Family obligations meant that we had to cut our Parade visit short and return

home on Wednesday. Our trip was uneventful and we enjoyed some beautiful roads going through Kentucky and West Virginia. The PCA Parade is an amazing event and I would recommend to any club member that you attend one. So much to do and see. So many great cars. And all those fantastic PCAers to enjoy it with. I most enjoy the fact that I would never have visited French Lick Indiana if not for this event. It turned out to be a fantastic location which I very much enjoyed seeing. In case you haven’t heard, the Parade will be in our area next year with the host location being Jay Peak in Vermont, so give attending this fabulous event some thought. You will certainly have a blast and take in enough Porsche fun to last you for a while.

Janis Joplins legendary 1965 Psychadelic painted 356 was on display. In 1968, Janis purchased a used ’65 Porsche 356C Cabriolet for $3,500. Deciding the Oyster White color didn’t suit her, she commissioned one of her roadies, Dave Roberts, to give it a psychedelic face lift. It took Roberts a month to complete the paint job. The car soon became one of the most recognizable vehicles in the San Francisco area until it was stolen in 1969. The thief, realizing the car would be too recognizable, spray-painted it gray. The car was later recovered and the mural restored. After Janis’ death, the car was used as a courtesy car by her manager Albert Grossman. The car fell in disrepair and was taken back by the Joplin family and restored. The car has been on loan to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1995 by Janis’ heirs. This year it came up for auction by RM Sotheby’s with an auction estimate of $400K!

It was roughly this time last year that I decided to take the plunge into club racing and started making arrangements to attend my first race at Sebring. Although I had lots of people encouraging me I was filled with doubt as to whether I was ready. What I found out along the way is that no one is ever truly ready for their first race — experience is the best teacher.

REFLECTIONS ON MY ROOKIE RACING SEASON

This past year I took part in five PCA club races: Sebring, Lime Rock Park, Monticello Motor Club, Watkins Glen, and most recently, New Jersey Motorsports Park — Thunderbolt. Looking back I can see that each race was its own learning experience and that I built upon that knowledge at each subsequent race. While I’ve yet to receive a call from any of the Formula One constructors about a seat in 2016, I like to think that I am a much more competent driver than when I started the season. During my first open practice session at Sebring, my initial shock came from people passing me wherever they wanted without a point-by. For someone who had only driven on track during a DE, I found this a little more than disconcerting. It was hard to learn a new track when I had to

keep one eye glued to my rearview mirror and the other facing forward. In time, I learned that I needed to hold my line and the faster cars would find a way around me. My second race of the year was at Lime Rock Park – my “home” track. It was my first race on a track I was familiar with, and as a consequence, I started thinking about race craft

and how I could be competitive. The first time I took the downhill correctly, and passed someone on the front straight, I felt like a pro racer. I also learned how to use faster cars as a tow to get around slower cars by attaching myself to their rear bumper. The first time I ever did a sub-minute lap at Lime

Rock was during the race as the faster cars “pulled” me along. The only down side LIME ROCK PARK

to this moment of glory was that I promptly spun upon completion of that fast lap.

There are a lot of differences between a race and DE. One of the main differences is that we are all taught in DE to “drive the line” which is a great starting point when learning to drive on the track.

REFLECTIONS ON MY ROOKIE RACING SEASON

Luckily I was able to get right back in the race and that was my last spin for the year. For the first few races I was absolutely horrible at the start. When my spotter would yell “green green green” over the radio I would watch all the cars pass me by. I was tentative to get on the gas or get close to other cars. However, as each race progressed I became a little

more comfortable with the starts, to the point where I passed five cars before the first turn at NJMP. Instead MONTICELLO MOTOR CLUB

of trying to claw back the spots I lost at the start, I was slowly beginning to creep up the finishing order. I wasn’t

setting any lap records, but I was making progress at each race. There are a lot of differences between a race and DE. line and I had to get used to driving around off-line. I also had to get used to people who spun, or worse yet, had an incident in front of WATKINS GLEN

me. There were a few times where I was certain that I was either going to be collected, or collect someone else. My standard response to an inquiry about how my race weekend went has been “my car went back on the trailer in the same condition it came off — so it went well!” One thing that did not change during the course of the year was “butterflies”.

I have to admit that when I sat on the grid before a race I would often recite a variation of the “astronaut’s prayer” — “please God, don’t let me F....screw up!” It is intimidating to be surrounded by dozens of roaring race cars and experienced drivers. That being said, as soon as I would hear “green green green” any doubts or fears I had were completely THUNDERBOLT

replaced by a cold blooded desire to win. I’ve spoken with several experienced drivers who have shared with me that, for them, those same feelings never

go away. It was nice to know that I had something in common with those steely veterans. If you are considering taking part in a race, and our instructors have told you that you are ready, I would encourage you to do so. I believe that no one, no matter how skilled, is completely ready for their first race until they actually compete. You just have to get out there and do it and hopefully you will come away with the same feeling I now have — that taking part in these races has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life.

Monterey Car Week 2015 ...It is axiomatic at Monterey Car Week that you just can’t do it all. You must prioritize your activities based on your personal preferences, stamina, and budget. Yes, Monterey Car Week can be ridiculously expensive — but it doesn’t have to be completely crazy in that regard if you pick and choose carefully and stick to your priorities. Many of our best experiences were “free”.

Here is a brief summary of our week…

CVR’s Jerry and Deborah Charlup arranged to rent a beautiful home at Pebble Beach for the entire week. We were surprised to learn the home was previously owned by astronaut Alan Shepard. It would serve as operating base for the week for four couples — the Charlups, Trish and me, and two other California-based couples who are also longtime friends of the Charlups

(and just happen to own mint Porsche 356s — Imagine that!). The back deck of the house offered beautiful views of the Carmel Bay, whale watching, and was within walking distance to the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on Sunday. nobody is better at this than Mr. Charlup (thanks again!). 16 SUNDAY was check-in and arrival day, followed by a wonderful gourmet meal prepared at the house. We were joined for dinner by Pamela and Prescott Kelly. 17 MONDAY had us visiting the Porsche Zentrum near Quail Lodge in Carmel Valley. Of special interest to us, Porsche was displaying the historic 904 previously owned for many years by CVR member Ernst Benzien.

The signage for RENNSPORT V also made a great photo op for my three housemates who had their classic Porsches. Even Porsche’s staff was scrambling for their cameras! We also checked out the nearby auction preview at Bonham’s, including several of the 156 Porsches to be auctioned on the peninsula during the week. (Note: for a full report on the auctions, I hope you attended the CVR monthly meeting on Sept 15.

Monterey Car Week 2015 18 TUESDAY meant the Concours on the Avenue in “downtown” Carmel-Bythe-Sea. (Admission was free for all spectators). Quality and diversity of entries was amazing. Porsches were strongly represented, including a very fresh restoration of a Carrera Speedster and a 62 Twin-Grille Roadster owned by Bobby Rahal — who was just hanging out by the car pretty much all day. His son’s viper green 918 was also seen parked prominently about town all week, but I digress... Congratulations to the Charlups who were awarded with a major award at this event — the “Barry Rilliet Laguna Seca Award” — presented for the car in the show that best represents the spirit of Laguna Seca Raceway (Jerry’s car has documented history showing it competed at Laguna Seca in its earliest days...). 19 WEDNESDAY we attended the “Little Car Show” in Pacific Grove. (Once again, admission was free). This somewhat quirky show featured cars with engines no greater than 1600 cc — nicely enabling Porsche 356s to participate. One of our housemates won

Then, almost in a flash, it was over. Another bucketlist trip checked off... Looking back on the week, a couple other things stand out. First, we were pleasantly surprised at how many CVR members and other friends from CT we met at the various events we attended. Second, there were many amazing events that we were not able to attend due to schedule conflicts. For example, we missed the Carmel Mission Classic, Concorso Italiano, Quail Motorsports Gathering, and more... At Monterey Car Week, you just can’t do it all.

WANTED Greetings CVR Friends! You may remember me several years ago passing you at Lime Rock in the red BoParkerPhoto.com 944 Turbo. I’m sorry to say I haven’t been on the track recently but I do greatly miss all my CVR friends. Since graduating University with a degree in Psychology and minors in Finance and Business, I’ve worked in fields that have provided terrific learning experiences: a manager at school in the audio / visual department, a Volkswagen sales agent at Prestige in Stamford, a stint working in a retirement home, and even a crowd control / security agent at a night club! Since graduating, I haven’t run into a situation that grabs me and is rewarding enough to want to continue long term. I’m open to trying just about anything that will engage me with interesting, enlightening experiences and good people. I’m looking for something in 78
