T

he epicenter of renewable energy. The Great Energy Debate. The future of the Salton Sea. The energy future of the Coachella Valley. Come to the Southern California Energy Summit on October 9-10th in Palm Springs to hear the latest on these and other topics. Don’t miss this opportunity to join leaders in government, energy and business for “The Great Energy Debate: Beyond 33% & the Future of the Salton Sea”. Burke Rix Communications, organizers of the Summit, expect this year to be the best yet with a wide array of thought leaders united together to discuss the future of clean energy, green job growth, and new opportunities to create an economically vibrant and sustainable region. Last year over 600 industry and community leaders attended and this year’s keynote speakers, including Tesla CoFounder and Chief Technology Officer JB Straubel, are expected to be a big draw. The Energy Summit kicks off on October 9th with two FREE events open to the general public; a Green Building Bus Tour and a forum on the Salton Sea. The Green Building Bus Tour is hosted by Coachella Valley Association of Governments’ Green for Life program and will showcase the valley’s most sustainable properties. Attendees will see the latest in green design features and how such improvements can be incorporated into a new home or remodel. Local green architects and contractors will be on hand to lead the tour and answer questions about everything from high efficiency air conditioning to solar technology. The tour features educational demonstrations on trend-setting ways to save energy and money. The bus tour includes a complimentary lunch and invitation to attend the Energy Summit welcome reception at the conclusion of the tour at 5:00pm. Looking for ways to pay for your energy upgrades or new solar system? On the bus tour, Ygrene Energy representatives will be available to talk about Clean Energy CV Upgrade (CleanEnergyCVUpgrade.com), a new program offering 100% financing for energy and water conservation improvements. Property owners can

Interview with Muralist Angelina Christina

C

hristina Angelina (aka Angelina Christina) has quickly become a favorite artist of many in the Coachella Valley. She is well-known here for the strikingly beautiful and yet controversial mural she painted on the front of BAR in Palm Springs, the Salton Sea mural and the beautiful work she did this summer at Hacienda Cantina & Beach Club. She grew up in Venice, CA and began painting at a young age and it became a profession for her around age 16. She is now 32. She mostly uses spray paint for her art. During a recent interview I sat down with her to talk about the evolution of her art. PC: I hear you travel a lot with your art. What is that like for you? AC: Traveling and painting is awesome, I love it. It’s the perfect life for me. I travel all the time. I’m constantly living out of my bag and going place to place painting murals. PC: I first heard of you from the Salton Sea, can you tell us about that? AC: The Salton Sea mural was done with my friend FinDac, he was coming into town from London and we were planning on working together for several months all over. We were planning on going to Minneapolis and New York but we both

4

really wanted to do some work in the desert. We’re both really drawn to doing stuff out in an open desert landscape. I found the location from a friend who travels with us as a photographer. When Fin arrived in town we were ready. It took about 1 ½ weeks to finish, staying in Indio driving back and forth. We wanted to incorporate animals present in the area; rattlesnakes, bobcats, raccoons. PC: When did you first start painting in the Coachella Valley? AC: I started painting out here….the Salton Sea was the first one! I had been traveling here as a kid. My parents have a house out in Lake Havasu so I’ve been coming to the desert my whole life. I’ve been doing small things out here throughout my life but the Salton Sea mural was the first big thing out here, which then led to Bar which led to everything else in the Coachella Valley. PC: Why the Coachella Valley? AC: I really like it here. I think it has good energy and I like the people here. I love sharing my work with the community. I feel all the parts of the Coachella Valley are different from each other: Indio, Slab City, Palm Springs, Desert Hot Springs. I like the feel of each place. PC: Which artists are you influenced by? AC: I’m influenced by artists working now and artists that worked hundreds of years ago. I have an extensive art history background. I’ve studied at UCLA as well as in Italy and Greece. I’m definitely influenced and inspired by artist who worked hundreds and thousands of years ago and everyone working today. PC: We heard you were going to be doing something big in Los Angeles? AC: I did a mural for the Academy of Motion Pictures, Arts, and Sciences. It was on the old May Company building on Fairfax and Wilshire. It was the first mural they have ever commissioned. The building was erected in the late 1800s and sits on the LACMA campus. Everyone was so great to work with and they truly loved it. The Director of the Academy came up to me when it was done and said “This is an Oscar-

worthy mural” which was awesome. The mural was painted on the building where the entrance was to go into the Hollywood Costume Exhibit, which they were laying the red carpet down for right as I was finishing. That was on October 2. It took 5 days to complete the project. There were a lot of celebrities that attended and had their photos taken in front of my mural. PC: What else have you been up to? AC: I have been… since I did the mural at the Salton Sea last September…I’ve traveled to New York, Florida, went to Art Basel in Miami, Denver, I’ve painted at Coachella Music and Arts Festival for the Do Lab, Boulder, Minneapolis, Brazil, a lot of work in Las Vegas as well, all over the place. I keep coming back here. I think I do more work out here than any other place. After returning from Hollywood I was commissioned to do a mural at a private residence in Palm Springs, which I will be completing today (Oct. 7). PC: Any future projects we should keep our eyes open for? AC: It looks like I’m going to Brazil at the end of October and Art Basel in Miami, Florida. PC: Any shout-outs? AC: I definitely want to give a shout out to FinDac, he’s the one I collaborated with on the mural in front of BAR and Salton Sea, which led us to the subsequent work out here, thank you for all your hard work and awesomeness. Also big shout out to Alex

Pesante (@easeonetx) who I worked with on the pieces in the back of BAR and the work at the Hacienda. He’s awesome, I love working with him as he’s brilliant. PC: Any way to buy your art work, check out photos and keep updated with your projects? AC: The best way to keep updated is my Instagram, @Starfightera or my Facebook. I will be updating my website soon. I have a studio in Venice and also have stuff at Gallery 446 here in Palm Springs on Indian Canyon. As far as purchasing work, you could contact me directly at 310-795-8578. There isn’t a lot since most of my work is murals.

ast year, on November 19, Desert Hot Springs declared a “Fiscal Emergency.” The crisis was caused by several factors, but mainly it was due to national and state economic trends that included declining local revenue, rising costs and the loss of redevelopment funding. Many cities experienced waning revenue, but other valley cities have major retail outlets and industries to help close the gap. Desert Hot Springs is a bedroom community with minimal retail, no large industry and mainly small boutique spas and hotels. With a short fall of $6.2 million, the city dramatically slashed its budget. It implemented pension reform, limited employee benefits, cut staff by 66%, reduced salaries by 22% (or more) and eliminated non-essential spending. The city cut $1.7 million from public safety. In order to fund public safety -- the largest expenditure in the city’s budget and its most important -- the city tapped its reserves. Having used those reserves, Desert Hot Springs responded by writing Measure F, a parcel tax, for the Consolidated Primary Election last June. The measure would have generated funds by taxing vacant parcels that did not “contain habitable structures with required plumbing, electricity and other improvements with valid permits within the parcel’s boundaries.” The tax would not modify homeowner’s property tax or affect the coveted Prop 13. The singular purpose of Measure F was to fund “Public Safety Services.” Specifically: police protection, such as improving 911 emergency response times, maintaining a safe level of police officer’s staffing, implementing gang and drug prevention programs and engaging in more active community policing. With empty lots in most neighborhoods and open desert surrounding the entire community, vacant parcels provide an opportunity for “the occurrence and proliferation of public nuisance activities.” The city determined that undeveloped land had a direct relationship to the usage of public safety. The California Constitution does not prohibit tax on ownership of real property if the tax is a “special tax.” So, legally the city had the right to tax vacant land because the parcel tax is not an ad valorem (tax based on value), a transaction or a sales tax. The city includes nearly 24 square miles and only 20% of Desert Hot Springs is developed. In 2010, the city annexed land from I-10 to Dillon Road and from Indian Trail to Palm Drive. The parcel tax would have been implemented immediately after the vote and would have expired in six years on June 30, 2020. Suffice it to say, had Measure F passed, adequate revenue would have been generated for the sole purpose of public safety. Indeed, landowners benefit by the good things the city does. When the city is in good financial shape and it can afford to make improvements and build infrastructure, land value goes up. But for the city to prosper, it

must maintain an effective police department. Without adequate public safety, the city’s quality of life and reputation are at risk. In addition to the revenue Measure F would have generated, it is also likely that the added taxation would have encouraged landowners to develop their empty lots and large parcels, which would have further helped the city move forward creating jobs, new businesses and improved property values. So why did Measure F fail? For the measure to pass, it required a two-thirds vote. The State of California requires a two-thirds approval since the imposed “special tax” is on real property. Only bona fide residents were allowed to vote. No out-of-town landowners could vote on the measure. The vote was written in a straightforward manner: a “No” vote was against the parcel tax and a “Yes” vote was in favor. With a population of nearly 28,000, but only 9,730 registered voters, the summer election had a 24.42% turn out. A total of 2,376 ballots were cast, but only 2,352 voted on Measure F. The results were 1,446 in favor and 906 against. To get the two-thirds figure, the “Yes” votes were divided by the total number of votes cast on Measure F. “Yes” had 61.48% and “No” had 38.52%. Although it won the majority, it failed to achieve the two-thirds. The measure needed an additional 300 plus votes to pass. Coming out publicly in favor of Measure F was the Desert Hot Springs Police Officers Association. President of the DHS Police Officers Association, Mike Valentich, issued a press release: “Measure F is needed if the City of Desert Hot Springs is going to provide the public safety services residents expect, need and most importantly, deserve!” Valentich emphasized that Measure F would provide the funds necessary to protect Desert Hot Springs residents, businesses, tourists and families without raising existing taxes on residents. Also in the release, Valentich noted that the City Council had officially requested a bid for services from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. He added, “Residents of Desert Hot Springs have been very clear to City Council and administration that they [citizens] very much want to keep their current police department and not contract out for police [Sheriff] services.” Valentich strongly urged the citizens and business owners of Desert Hot Springs to tell the City Council and the administration to only use Measure F money to keep the current police department and not to fund a contract with the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department. Ending the release, Valentich said: “This is a critical time for our City, our police department and other public safety services. The passage of Measure F is crucial for our existence. For these reasons, the Desert Hot Springs Police Officers Association supports Measure F and asks the people of Desert Hot Springs to vote

by heidi Simmons

Yes on Measure F.” Of course the police want to keep their jobs. They have worked hard to build relationships with the citizens and many of the police live in the community. Losing the local police and contracting with the Sheriff is considered by many residents as a giant step backwards. DHS was incorporated in 1963 and had the Sheriffs until the police department was established in 1997. The city’s growth, prosperity and quality of life directly correlate with reliable public safety. Desert Hot Springs Mayor Adam Sanchez wrote the argument and the rebuttal in favor of Measure F in the Sample Ballot and Information Pamphlet sent to voters before the election. In his simple listing of dozen or so facts, Sanchez said measure F was not a tax increase. It only affected owners of vacant land. Absentee landowners receive the same police and fire service while paying only a fraction of what residents must pay, and that was unfair. Sanchez added that the measure would stabilize the city fiscally and prevent bankruptcy. No other press releases, from the police or city, were issued in favor of Measure F. The City Council, as a whole, never asked citizens to vote “Yes” on the measure. Nor did the council commit Measure F funds, if it passed, to the existing police department. Though it was written specifically for public safety, Measure F didn’t specify who would provide the service. Days before the election, on the main street of DHS, a few hand-painted signs appeared in Spanish favoring the measure. Hardly noticeable around town, “Yes on Measure F,” scrunched to fit on 8x11 paper and photocopied in black and white, were posted in the windows some small businesses and on palm trees or fences. A few cars had “Yes on Measure F” painted in shoe polish on the windows. Nothing in favor of the measure came in the mail. Conversely, signs against Measure F, flooded the thoroughfares with high-quality placards. Hundreds of navy blue and deep red posters simply stated “NO on F.” All along the main roads, stuck in the ground, up on light posts and power poles, in front of every major shopping center, strip malls and the big hotels, citizens were bombarded with the bold white letters on red, like a stop sign. If that wasn’t enough to reach voters, several times a week, glossy postcards, 8x11 colored flyers and folded brochures inundated residents’ mailboxes with the “NO on F” logo and more.

Community

Desert Hot Spring Community Leader, Dot Reed, an elderly lady with tight gray curls, glasses and rosy cheeks was pictured and quoted on nearly every mailer. “I’ve lived in the same house for 36 years here in Desert Hot Springs. Measure F will hurt everyone’s home values. I urge you to Vote No on F.” Another resident, Frances Sheckter said, “I’ve owned 10 acres of land here in DHS for the past 61 years. I believed in this City’s potential, but at 91 years old, if Measure F passes I can’t afford the $3,500 a year in new taxes and will be forced to sell my property.” In a community where the median age is 34, how did two old folks convince a city to vote against fiscal stability and public safety? And why wouldn’t the City Council commit to keeping its police force? One answer is: the Inland Empire Taxpayers Association (IETA). The organization’s website says: “Our mission is to research ballot measures, candidates and public policy issues, educate the public on those matters and take action to protect the interests of Riverside and San Bernardino counties.” Mailers also included statements that threatened the security of Prop 13, which created fear and doubt among homeowners. Even granny Reed said Prop 13 was at risk and asked citizens to “Protect Prop 13.” The IETA is a for-profit business and there is no limit to how much can be contributed. “Individuals, businesses, corporations and PAC contributions are permissible.” Only foreign nationals cannot contribute, unless they have permanent residency in the US. Estimates put IETA group spending on “No on F” at over $150,000. When asked for a list of who contributed to the “No on F” campaign, and who initiated their involvement, and was Reed paid, IETA did not respond to calls or email. Besides using the elderly, other organizations that the Inland Empire Taxpayers Association included on mailers as “Those we trust say ‘No on F’” were: Howard continue to page 6

Jarvis Taxpayers Association, Small Business Action Committee, The Palm Springs Regional Association of Realtors and The Desert Sun. Fighting against unfair taxation is an American right and has been since the country’s beginnings. Most Americans would agree they are overly taxed in one form or another. Over the years, the city has indeed had to raise taxes on property and utilities. The citizens of DHS certainly carry their fair share. The parcel tax was a way to garner potential revenue without once again putting the squeeze on homeowners or renters. Would Measure F have had a better chance if the City Council committed to keep the local police department? On that subject, the City Council is divided. There are members who would rather contract public safety out to the County Sheriffs, a move that may save money now, but cost more down the road. It may also jeopardize the city’s quality of life with a lesser presence. To say nothing of the potential loss of the more personal service that now exists. With the limitations and challenges the city regularly faces, Desert Hot Springs officials work hard to make ends meet. The city is land rich, but cash poor without major businesses, industry and their resulting tax revenue. The city must do something to keep solvent, avoid bankruptcy and maintain public safety. Quite a task to be sure. One could conclude that big donors, outof-town landowners and a fractured city council over who should provide public safety, stopped the parcel tax.

Measure F might have been the wisest solution for the economically challenged community. In order to have the necessary growth that generates revenue, the city must have the highest standards in public safety. But Measure F failed and five months later, new measures are on the ballot. The General Election this November will have three measures for the city to consider. Measure HH is a Medical Marijuana Cultivation Tax (Grow marijuana), Measure II is a Medical Marijuana Tax (Sell marijuana), and Measure JJ is a One Percent Sales, Transaction and Use Tax Increase. Desert Hot Springs City Attorney, Steven B. Quintanilla, wrote the Impartial Analysis of all three measures. Below is how the City intends to generate funds and who will pay the taxes if the new measures pass. Measure HH proposes to “impose a tax on the cultivation of marijuana for medical use and for casual/recreational use in the event such use is legalized or decriminalized

in California. It will be an annual tax of $25.00 per square foot for the first 3,000 square feet and then $10.00 per square foot for the remaining space utilized in connection with the cultivation of marijuana for the above uses.” Measure II proposes to “impose a tax on any person or entity legally selling or providing marijuana for medical use and casual/recreational use if such use is legalized or decriminalized in California. It will be a monthly tax of 10% of the proceeds from such sales or provision.” Quintanilla adds to Measure II, “The tax will not be charged to any patient, caregiver or consumer. Payment of the tax shall solely be the responsibility of the person or entity selling or providing the marijuana. The purpose of this tax is to raise revenue to fund general municipal services.” Measure JJ will increase sales tax by 1%. It is currently at 8%, of which the state takes 6.5%, Riverside County Transportation gets

.5% and DHS gets 1%. The city estimates the increase will raise $1.4 million. Revenue generated will go into the city’s general fund. The increase may not seem like much, but in a working community where the majority is economically challenged, it will certainly be noticed by local businesses and consumers. All three measures only require a majority vote, unlike the two-thirds for Measure F. If one or all of the measures pass, the revenue will be used to feed the coffers of the city’s general fund. However, HH, II and JJ have no parameters that specifically fund public safety and if they pass, there is no guarantee the city will retain local law enforcement. With citizens asked to vote on the cultivation and sale of marijuana within the city, it seems appropriate that a commitment by the City Council to provide quality public safety and keep the police department intact would be important. The police department’s budget is part of the city’s general fund and adequately funding public safety is the most significant factor in protecting the city’s future. Citizens are certainly accustomed to having their own police department and residents respect and trust the members of the local police. The big question is: If the good people of Desert Hot Springs vote for the tax increase or the marijuana measures, what guarantee do they have that the city will, in fact, keep the police department? And if none of the measures pass, what will happen next to public safety?

Bill Burr brings his comedy to Spotlight 29 Casino on Saturday, October 11 ill Burr is an American comedian from Boston, Massachusetts who has a resume a mile long. Having first gained notoriety for his recurring role on the second season of Chappelle’s Show, Bill developed a comedic style of uninformed logic that has made him a regular with Letterman, Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Fallon. On September 30, Bill released his 2011 Carnegie Hall performance only on vinyl through Third Man Records. His fourth hour-long special, “I’m Sorry You Feel That Way,” will premiere on Netflix on December 5 and was recorded on June 20 at The Tabernacle in Atlanta. In July, Bill received the Stand-up Comedian of the Year Award from the prestigious Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal. Bill will be seen in the indie film, Black and White, opposite Kevin Costner, which made its World Premiere at The Toronto International Film Festival on September 6. Earlier this year he was seen in Walk of Shame alongside Elizabeth Banks. In 2013 Bill was seen in the films The Heat with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, and in Stand Up Guys with Al Pacino and Christopher Walken. Bill was also seen in the Steve Carell & Tina Fey feature, Date Night. Bill received raves for his recurring role as “Kuby” on the hit AMC-TV show, Breaking Bad and he can be seen in multiple episodes of the hit Comedy Central show, Kroll Show. He guest starred on Fox TV’s New Girl in 2013 and contributed to the 2012 and 2011 ESPYS. One of the most popular comedy podcasts on the web, Bill’s Monday Morning Podcast, is an off-the-cuff weekly rant that has become a fan favorite. Bill began the podcast in May of 2007 and has produced over 350 episodes. Burr was nice enough to take time out to chat with CV Weekly by phone last week.

www.coachellavalleyweekly.com

CVW: Were you always funny even as a kid? And did you grow up wanting to be a comedian? Burr: I feel like I grew up in a funny part of the country. Everyone around me were all funny characters. I grew up loving comedians. But there wasn’t any internet back then. A friend of mine said he was going to go to an open mic night and I went with him and that was a watershed moment for me because if I didn’t meet him I don’t know if I would’ve ever gotten into standup. CVW: Who were your favorite comedians back then? Burr: Anyone who made me laugh. But at first it was the ones my Dad was watching like Dangerfield, Joan Rivers, Don Rickles, Foster Brooks, Lily Tomlin, Cheech & Chong. Then I started buying albums with my paper route money. I would buy them for my Dad for birthdays and Christmas and he would listen to them once and I would take them and memorize every line. When I got in middle school I started buying Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Eddie Murphy. I loved Sam Kinison, David Brenner and Andrew Dice Clay. CVW: How many days a year do you do stand-up? Burr: I go out like every other week. I love it. CVW: You’ve been in a lot of movies and TV shows. Do you prefer doing that or stand-up? Burr: Definitely stand-up. There’s nothing like it. For me the way I’m wired I’ll get up and perform in front of 20 people. I don’t care. At this point in my life I don’t ever see me stopping. I will always want to go up there and make people laugh and piss them off a little. CVW: So it doesn’t matter to you if you

perform for 20 people or 20,000? Burr: Well ya (laughing) for my finances and my ego I enjoy having a big sign with my name on it but as far as just doing comedy if someone says ‘Hey, I’ve got a room with 8 people in it. Will you come down?’ I’m like ‘sure’. CVW: Where do you draw your inspiration for your material from? Burr: All my failures in my personal life. I like famous people that get themselves in trouble and making fun of them and then defending them. The NFL has been a lot of fun this year watching them squirm and acting like they’re holier than thou and that they don’t lie. And you’ve got to keep a sense of humor about yourself because I realize just how full of shit I am too. CVW: Tell me about your new comedy special coming up on Netflix. What will be different from your other specials? Burr: Well I like to think that I keep getting better (laughing). With each special I’m working on a new skill. Each one is a transition from the last. And with this one I feel that skill I was working on has gotten better so I’m happy about that. CVW: What was it like working with Melissa McCarthy on “Heat”? Burr: Ah man…she’s something else. A talent like that doesn’t come around that often. She’s the real deal. If she did standup she’d be a real scholar. I can’t say enough about her. And she’s as sweet as she is funny. CVW: What advice would you give young comedians just starting out? Burr: Just have fun and don’t put too much pressure on yourself. The first 10-15 times you do it it’s not about how good you are but about having the nerve to go up there when they call your name. Stay away from negative people. If you feel like you have to make adjustments just to hang out with someone then that’s not a good person to bring into your circle so cut them loose. Try and get as good as you can and then don’t be a dick to the new people. CVW: What was it like being Saul’s henchman on “Breaking Bad”? Do you feel

like you gained a whole different fan base from that? Burr: It was fun to get recognized and appreciated as an actor. I had other actors coming up to me telling me that they respected me as an actor and that was cool. CVW: So are you going to be part of the new show “Better Call Saul”? Burr: I don’t know. I haven’t heard anything yet. I’m a fan first. CVW: So you’re saying there’s a possibility then? Burr: Hey…there’s a possibility I’ll end up on Glee. You never know. On that note I have to say that I laughed through this whole interview. Burr has a sharp wit and is always on his toes. Tickets for the October 11 show are $45, $55, and $75 and are available at www. Spotlight29.com, Star Tickets (800) 5853737, or the Spotlight 29 Box Office and Gift Shop. Doors open at 7 p.m. The show starts at 8 p.m.

hanks to CV Weekly’s own funny man, Richard Weiss (of Weiss Cracks found in the paper every week), the rare opportunity for top tier comedy and a beautiful meal are yours this weekend. The popular dining destination, Charli Marrone’s, will be offering a Comedy and Dinner event this Saturday night. Hosted by Double J, a 40 year radio and television sports personality, he will no doubt be delivering his own endearing and hilarious quips centered around his wife and Italian nationality as he hosts the night’s event, that includes popular headliners and TV personalities, Gayla Johnson and Jason Stuart. Gayla Johnson: An Actress and Standup Comedian, on Showtime’s “Fierce Funny Women”, she just recently finished taping her own self-titled comedy special. You might recognize this accomplished actress from recurring on ABC’s “Don’t trust the B----in Apartment 23”. If not there, perhaps from her webisode series, Assignment Unexplained, or ABC’s Brothers and Sisters, or in Beverly Hills 90210, Martin, The Practice, Mystery ER, I Didn’t Know I was Pregnant, and well, the list is endless. As a veteran theater actress, Gayla has starred in: For Colored Girls Who Considered Suicide when the Rainbow was Enough: A Raisin In The Sun; LaBrea Tar Pits; No Exit; RosenBlat & Guildenstern are Dead, Black and Bluestien, and local improv and sketch productions. Starting out with a Degree in Broadcast Communications, she found the heartrestraining atmosphere of news to lack the relationship she wanted to have with a listening audience. “I idolized Connie Chung. She was the symbol of professionalism and success. But one day I noticed something - she never smiled.” Working as a temp to find her own way postgraduation, she locked in on the entertainment industry and it has suited her just fine. She ultimately pursued the challenging field of stand-up comedy. “Stand-up Comedy is the one thing you can do badly, and no one will laugh at you,” she likes to say. Fortunately, that hasn’t been the case for this woman of many talents. She’s won a host of comedy competitions, including, the Ice House Comedy Club Comedy Contest, “Positive I Can Entertain” Competition, Funniest Female, and the Make Me LAFF Competition. She was honored by the LA Comedy Awards with the Most Hilarious Comedian and Breakthrough Performer in Film and Television. ABC’s WipeOut featured her for 3 appearances, and fortunately, she bounced back, expanding her comedic talent to game shows and reality television. She has recently finished independent films currently debuting in festivals, including “Sharp” and “Destiny Depot”. She also stars as a weed doctor in a Rob Schneider web show called, “The Real Rob”. Known for her adaptable skills in engaging the audience, you are guaranteed to fall in love and out of your chair as you enjoy this beautiful woman’s dynamic energy and quick wit. Jason Stuart: Stuart has been making people laugh out loud with hishysterical performances all over the country since coming out in 1993. Mind you, coming out in this day and age, is much different than when he came out. This was before Ellen and the drastic political changes and views of our society and government. In

speaking to him, it seems his family was more fearful of his coming out than he was, concerned that there would be those that would do him physical harm as a public personality. His humor is courageously, flinch-worthy and honest, as he draws from his life and experiences as a Jewish, gay man. Stuart has performed at all of the top comedy clubs & comedy festivals, colleges, universities and hundreds of gay events & prides, even performing on Broadway. Canadian Pop-Rockers, The New Pornographers

Tilted Kilt Open Mic Competition events Fall Edition Week 2 Winners

@ Pappy & Harriet’s October 15th. Indoor Show Set to Sell Out! “

I

always tell people that the one genius thing I’ve done in my life was starting a band with Neko Case and Dan Bejar,” shared New Pornographers main songwriter, founder and instigator, Carl, “AC” Newman. The eight piece, multi-level, talent ensemble, is said to be “virtually peerless in the world of power-pop and indie-rock” according to NPR Music. Newman put the group together in 1998, and they produced their first album, “Mass Romantic”, in 2000. Since then, The New Pornographers have released four other studio albums, including their most recent, Brill Bruisers, which has been their highest ranking album to date, hitting the US charts at number 13 (and it’s only been out since August of this year). There is a 6th album, a live album that is only available at their shows and on their website (listed at the end of this article). The New Pornographers are A.C. Newman, Blaine Thurier, Dan Bejar, John Collins, Kathryn Calder, Neko Case and Todd Fancey. Each of these talents has a successful career as individuals, but the music continues to bring them back together despite their crazy schedules. This being said, it is no small event that every single member of New Pornographers is scheduled for the October 15th show at Pappy and Harriet’s, one of only 30 in the States. “The fact that we don’t take our time together or our success for granted has a lot to do with the quality we produce in the studio and on stage. We all really enjoy and appreciate each other, and the good energy feeds the audience at our live shows.” (In September of this year, the band announced that original band member, Kurt Dahle, would be leaving the band). I asked Newman if, in his early hopes and expectations for the band, he had any idea of the success it would become. “My big vision was just finishing the record, ‘Mass Romantic’, and getting it out there. I didn’t see past that. It’s all been strange. If you’d have told me that we’d have had an album debut at number 13 on the charts 15 years later, it would have blown my mind, and I’d

T

have thought you were insane.” In regard to the new album, Newman states, “This is a celebration record. After periods of difficulty, I am at a place where nothing in my life is dragging me down and the music reflects that.” Produced by bandmembers John Collins (bass) with Newman, the 12-track album was recorded primarily at Little Blue in Woodstock, NY and at JC/DC Studios in Vancouver B.C. with additional recording in Austin, Brooklyn and Vermont. Newman adds, “We wanted Xanadu and we wanted Sigue Sigue Sputnik, which translated into sparklier and faster.” Find out more about The New Pornographers at thenewpornographers. com The indie-pop group out of New York, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, will open for the New Pornographers at 8 PM. Their first, self-titled album, reached number 9 on the Billboard, Heatseekers chart. The name of the band is based on the 1991 book written but unpublished by their friend, Charles Augustus Steen III. They’ll be promoting their new album Days of Abandon, produced in London and released this past May. You can listen to their music on Spotify and follow them at thepainsofbeingpureatheart.com/music. All Ages are welcome to this indoor show. Non-refundable, general admission tickets are available for $30 but are going fast. The day will also commemorate Pappy and Harriet’s 11 year anniversary. Doors will open at 7 PM for the show, but the restaurant, famous for its menu featuring items cooked on their outdoor fire pit and their bacon topped cheesy fries, will be open, first come, first serve. This is set to be a delightfully, rocking event that you won’t want to miss. pappyandharriets.com Tickets: www.ticketfly.com/purchase/ event/598217?utm_medium=bks

Front Porch Conversations with World Renowned Rocker, Nick Oliveri Chapter 1: The Non-Reunion “Reunion” with Queens of the Stone Age

N

ick Oliveri sat with me on the steps outside of his hotel, as he lit a cigarette, and reminisced about his early years here in the Coachella Valley, a season where he found music and lost his father. The house he lived in as a kid was just down the street. He was humble, open, and would handily beat any critic to the punch in pointing out his own shortcomings, all the while beaming about the abilities and talents of those he has been fortunate to work with. He acknowledged past mistakes, voiced questions about what the future holds, and shared openly about his regrets. As he spoke of adolescent memories with a sense of longing, it was clear that he has had no truer love for anything other than music, then or now. For Nick Oliveri, there has never been a “Plan B”, only music. He fell on that sword at the tender age of 14, alongside some of rock and rolls biggest names, all with roots here in the Coachella Valley. There is a vast amount of information regarding his life events and music -more than one article can handle. This is the conversation he chose to lead. From the better part of 3 hours talking with this artist, these are the highlights. CVW: Where did this all start for you? Oliveri: “I went to the US Festival, Heavy Metal Sunday. I was 11. I bought my own ticket and just told my mom I was going. She didn’t say no. She just made me go with one of her co-workers to make sure I didn’t get into any trouble while I was there. That show changed everything for me. I saw Ozzy, Judas Priest, The Scorpions, Van Halen, Motley Crüe. Yeah, I was all in after that.” “I hated that we moved from Culver City. I was just about to graduate from my elementary school in 6th grade. Then I came here and went to a school where Jr High was 6-8th. I hated my parents for it at the time. But I’d never have played in any

12

of the bands I’ve played with if we hadn’t moved here.” (He laughed as he spoke of his dad, but a cloud cast slightly on his demeanor as he continued. The senior Oliveri was killed in a car accident in ‘92.) “I must have made him pull his hair out. He used to go running all the time. Sometimes, I don’t know why he ever came back. We’d get in stupid fights.” “I got busted for spray painting a wall on the first day of school here in the desert. I came out to the bus stop and one of the older kids was still there after missing his earlier bus. He said, ‘Hey, you want to smoke a joint?’ I said, ‘Yeah...I think.’ He had these spray paint cans and we painted this country club wall. My folks had to pay $600 for that. Like idiots, we put our names on our ‘artwork’....a picture of a car with guns sticking out of it aiming at cops,” he said, shaking his head. “First day of school...off to a good start.” His mind continued to wander from music a bit as he shared, “Dad loved the Dodgers. He had a Maverick and painted it Dodger blue.” Oliveri proceeded to rattle off the names of Dodgers during that golden era. “I live real close to the stadium now.” I’d ditch school to stay home and play guitar, when I was supposed to be getting up to go to school. My parents were both working during the mornings, and I had until noon to get out of the house without getting caught. Eventually they started getting notes from school. I just really didn’t want to do anything else. What I really wanted to learn was what Randy Rhodes was doing. The Ramones records - I could kind of figure those out. I’d check out pictures of bar chords, and watch videos. I’ll never forget that day - my first musical conversation. It was at Brant’s (Bjork) house, him on drums, Josh (Homme) on guitar and Chris Cockrell on bass. John (Garcia) didn’t show up at first, and came in late. I’d already sung with them. I showed up with “New Rose” by The Damned, “I Don’t Care” by the Ramones, and “She” by Misfits. I had showed up with some covers I wanted to

play, and Josh and Brant had 2 or 3 originals. They maybe weren’t the greatest songs, but I still remember them to this day. They were catchy, and they didn’t suck. Brant had a really long one called “Communion Youth”. It was 1987. They were 12. John and I were around 14 and 15 at the time. We played a party for Chris Baker with Sean Wheeler’s band. We were pretty much the first version of Kyuss. I played two parties with them before leaving the band. They asked me back to play bass, about a year or two later, and that’s when I became a bass player. CVW: You wrote with Josh a lot in the days you were in QOTSA. Do you miss writing with him? Oliveri: Yes. I don’t know if he misses writing with me, but his collaboration always makes things better. On the song “Autopilot”, the original drummer played it kind of fast. Josh got on the drums, slowed it down and made it sound really good. His signature contributions were great on the last Mondo Generator album. It made the song “The Last Train”, 100 times better. He did this slinky backwards solo that only he does. It’s different and cool. It may be the best song on Hell Comes Your Heart. I put that one out myself, and it didn’t really do

much. I’m not a good business guy. Josh, on the other hand, is great. When you’re working with Josh, you can be as creative as you want, he can be as creative as he wants, but when it comes to business, he keeps you working. Josh for lack of a better term, is a ‘suit and tie rocker’, he keeps the business rolling right along with the music. I’ve been out of the band for 10 years now, and I’ve come around and asked if I could sit in. When I was with the band, we’d have guests come on all the time. I may be the only one who hasn’t yet, as the thirteenth member to be fired from Queens of the Stone Age. We had a bit of a revolving door. Anyway, I’d just ask to sing a song, not stepping on current bass player, Mike’s, aka Shoes’, feet. And he’d say, not this time. It’s his call, his band. It’s not about what I want anymore, and that’s ok. I stopped asking. CVW: What has been your experience with Dave Grohl? Oliveri: During the early days of Kyuss, we could always count on Dave and Chris from Nirvana being at our shows. Later, Dave is the reason we got the label behind us. He did a couple tours with us. He didn’t have to do that. But it had been a while since he’d gotten to play drums with a band. We knew he wasn’t there forever. Everybody had practiced really hard to be ready for him. I sure did. Last thing I wanted to do was be the weak link. It was great playing with him; he was so consistent and dependable. It was perfect every single time. I got to fly a Learjet because of him. He told me, ‘I don’t do drugs, but I have this thing with Learjets.’ It was his fiancé’s birthday and he wanted to take her somewhere and asked if we wanted to join them. It was the full rock star experience: we didn’t have to go through customs which felt weird. They fed us sushi. I’ll never forget it. When I was in Australia, I was working with Michele Maden from the band Tourettes. We were recording the song “Dog Food”, an Iggy Pop song for an independent

film there in Australia. For her birthday, I thought I’d ask Dave to do a couple tracks with me. This was when he was doing Crooked Vultures. I didn’t think he’d even answer the phone, but he did and said, ‘Sure’. He basically just had to ask how the song went and just laid it down, perfect. The movie was never completed, but a 45 was released on an Australian label that I’ve worked with, that put out Mondo Generator records. CVW: What is the music business like for you now, compared to pre-internet and pre-electronic downloading? Oliveri: The music business has changed so much. Everything Lars (Ulrich) from Metallica said came true...his delivery sucked, but he was right. He said free downloads of music would ruin the record industry. Now there’s only two major labels and they’re not signing anyone. I used to always do these 50/50 split deals; you can usually make enough money from them to make a new record with a little left over, and not get dropped. Retail isn’t even taking new CDs anymore. Vinyl has made a comeback, but it’s expensive. Vinyl is the only thing that you can hold in your hand and not burn on the computer. A major would have dropped you for only selling 10,000. And as far as touring goes, I haven’t had a band like I did when I was a kid since, well, when I was a kid. It used to be like, ‘Ok, let’s go!’ and we’d have mom’s house as security. Everybody has kids and families now, and they need to focus on being parents. I’ve been told that if I had kids, it would change everything, maybe even be good for me. It just hasn’t worked out for me that way. I am an uncle though. I love my niece. She’s beautiful and she’s grown up so fast. But I’m a lousy uncle. I just missed calling her on her birthday. Used to be, I would see her a lot when I was with Queens, because I felt really good about seeing her and I could bring her stuff...but then I lost that because of my screw ups, so then I felt like I couldn’t just see her and bring her stuff. I felt like a loser, the guy who had everything and lost everything. I’m not in denial. I admit it. I may be moving out of my place in LA soon, and I’m not sure about where I’m going next. I think about Spain. I wouldn’t be down the street from LA when someone wants me to record, but then the Dwarves

aren’t going to pay $1000 to fly me in either. I don’t like the business end of things. I just can’t find myself doing it. I got lucky, I know that. I got comfortable with people doing things for me. CVW: What is the new project you’re working on currently? Oliveri: I call this Uncontrollable instead of Mondo Generator, because I feel a sense of loyalty to the guys in Mondo. I’ve tried that before, and it doesn’t really work. Fans and I both, all really love the lineup we are as Mondo Generator. But right now, everyone is focusing on their families. My new CD, Nick Oliveri’s Uncontrollable, Leave Me Alone, is due to be released at the end of this month (October). I played all the instruments on it, with some special guest players, so I hand-picked the guys that are going to play with me. I loved the band Unsound, and I remember when Tony Brown (drummer) left. He was so good. But then this new guy, Jeff Bowman, comes in and he’s even faster, and he’s so hard hitting. I love that! I think that’s important. I’m really excited that he’s going to be part of this. Then there’s Mike Pygmie (guitar) who knows everybody’s songs and he absolutely rips on guitar. Hell, Mike knows more songs of mine than I do! I’m excited to get started. Normally I’d have people come up to LA to work on this, but I know these guys have kids and stuff. We’re going to open up for Queens of the Stone Age along with The Kills and JD McPherson. There are some things about the show I can’t talk about, (you know, the element of surprise) but I’m incredibly stoked. (Oliveri indicated that he may have already over-spoke to another media source due to a previous misunderstanding regarding certain elements to the sold out show.) CVW to the hand- picked crew set to perform with Nick Oliveri at the sold out LA Forum with Queens of the Stone Age: How are you feeling about this new project? Mike Pygmie - Guitar: I’m really excited about this project. The record is killer and it’s gonna be fun to perform. Nick did a great job on it and it’s very personal, not only the lyrical content, but also the fact that he plays all the instruments. You are hearing the music exactly how he heard it in his head and without compromise. It’s an honor for me to have a solo on it, especially because the list of guitar players he got to contribute is incredible. I’m stoked to be playing guitar in the band as well. Nick, Stephen and Jeff are all incredible musicians and awesome dudes as well. It’s gonna be a lot of fun! Jeff Bowman - Drummer: I’m grateful and somewhat nostalgic about playing with Nick Oliveri. At this point in my life, it feels like things have kind of come full circle. My very first musical project, called The Fast, was a noisy little high school garage band with Nick and another friend, Chris Baker. That was when I was first introduced to the desert music scene and an amazing circle of great desert musicians. Mike Pygmie and I have played in several

projects together over the years, too, including The Agents and The Whizards. He’s an incredible guitarist and has been a great friend through it all. So here we are, all these years later, friends still jamming in a blazing hot garage, kicking ass and dreaming big about what’s ahead for us. I feel totally honored to have the opportunity to play with these guys in Uncontrollable, and bringing Nick’s new music to life. I congratulate Nick on all of his musical accomplishments. I really connect to where he is coming from as an artist. Stephen Haas - Guitar: I’ll tell ya, I’m so stoked to be playing with my bro Nick! If it wasn’t already enough to have him ask me to record the solos for the song “Keep Me In The Loop” on the new record, that’s already filled with amazing and legendary

October 9 to October 15, 2014

players, then he asks me to be a part of the live band and tour with him. He could pick anyone to play with, and I’m the lucky one. His new record kicks ass and he’s just an unbelievable talent. I’m so excited to get the fuck outta Texas for a little while and come out there and play my ass off at the Forum opening for the Queens again. BREAKING LOCAL NEWS: There is also a potential in-store appearance in the works for the release of The Uncontrollable Leave Me Alone album at Hollywood’s Amoeba Records. A pair of tickets for the sold out show on October 31st will allegedly be enclosed in one of the CDs sold at that event. Also just confirmed is a show with Nick Oliveri’s Uncontrollable at The Hood on Saturday, October 25. War Drum will also be on the bill.

as there ever been a more polarizing figure in Rock & Roll than Morrissey? People love him and hate him in equal measure. For more than 30 years, first with the Smiths and then as a solo artist, he has challenged conventions and courted controversy. He is arguably one of the most important figures in Indie Rock. Steven Patrick Morrissey was born in 1959, in Lancashire England, to Irish Catholic parents. He spent his formative years in Manchester. Growing up, he worshiped Pop singers like Sandie Shaw and Marianne Faithfull. As a teen he was as obsessed with British “Kitchen Sink Dramas” as he was with James Dean and Oscar Wilde. He was athletic, but bookish at the same time. Morrissey was a quick convert to Punk Rock. Two of his earliest bands were the Nosebleeds (featuring Billy Duffy, who went on to fame as the guitarist for the Cult), and Slaughter & The Dogs. He also found time to publish three books, “The New York Dolls,” about his favorite band, “James Dean Is Not Dead,” about Dean’s brief movie career and “Exit Smiling” a treatise on obscure B-movie actors. In 1982 Morrissey met guitarist Johnny Marr. They began writing songs together.

Consider This

www.coachellavalleyweekly.com

Recruiting bassist Andy Rourke and drummer Mike Joyce they became the Smiths. By 1984 they had released their eponymous debut. Their sound was exhilarating. Marr’s buoyant melodies and jangly Rickenbacker riffs provided ballast for Morrissey’s Byronic flights of fancy. His demeanor was Post-Punk provocateur. Morrissey was a self- proclaimed “celibate homosexual,” and militant vegetarian. His lyrics tackled themes of loneliness and alienation, sometimes displaying black humor and a mordant sensibility. His vocal style would boomerang from crooning to keening to yodeling, (sometimes in the same song). The Smiths achieved massive popularity in England and garnered a healthy following in America, (despite minimal airplay on MTV or commercial radio.) The band only released four albums, plus a plethora of singles in the 80s, but along with U2 and R.E.M., they became one of the most influential bands of the decade. When the band broke up in 1987, Morrissey immediately began a solo career. Eight months after the demise of the Smiths, he released his first solo album, Viva Hate. It shot to #1 on the U.K. charts, buoyed by the hit singles, “Suedehead” and “Everyday Is Like Sunday.” His second effort, Bona Drag wasn’t really

a full-fledged record. It was more a collection of odds and sods. “Kill Uncle” arrived in 1991. It was commercially successful, but felt slightly over-cooked. Morrissey really found his footing on his fourth outing, 1992’s Your Arsenal. Teaming up with singer-guitarist Alain Whyte and ex-Polecats guitarist, Boz Boorer, Morrissey finally found collaborators as challenging as Johnny Marr. Produced by ex-David Bowie guitarist, Mick Ronson, the album was a heady brew of Glam and Rockabilly. The rest of Morrissey’s ‘90s output was hit and miss. Vauxhall And I released in 1994, felt funereal. 1995’s Southpaw Grammar was a weird excursion into Prog Rock, while 1997’s Maladjusted vacillated between torch songs and truculence. Morrissey took a seven year hiatus from recording. He re-surfaced in 2004 with his most assured effort, You Are The Quarry. Two years later he returned with the tepid Ringleader Of The Tormentors, but he bounced back in 2009 with his Punkiest album to date, Years Of Refusal. Now Morrissey has returned with his 10th solo album, World Peace Is None Of Your Business. The title track kicks the album into gear. Clickity percussion gives way to a tribal tom-tom beat before downshifting into a scabrous lullaby. Morrissey offers up his usual didactic condescension… “World peace is none of your business, so will you kindly keep your nose out/ The rich must profit and get richer and the poor must stay poor/Each time you vote you support the process.” Suddenly the tempo shifts again into a jackboot anvil chorus over skitter guitars. Morrissey displays his patented sardonic wit on two tracks, “Neal Cassidy Drops Dead” and “The Bullfighter Dies.” The former opens with sonic blasts of guitar as Morrissey somberly re-imagines the death of a Beat Generation iconoclast: “Neal Cassidy drops dead and Allen Ginsberg’s tears shampoo his beard.” The pulsing, morse-code guitar riffs give way to sweet Flamenco flourishes over an extended instrumental coda. The latter opens with a lonely trumpet reveille, percolating rhythm, ricochet guitar riffs and cheerful accordion. Morrissey’s mien is strident and jocular as he exalts “Hooray hooray, the bullfighter dies/And nobody cries because we all want the bull to survive.” Four tracks, “Istanbul,” “Earth Is The Lonliest Place,” “Staircase At The University” and “Kiss Me Alot”showcase Morrissey’s peerless facility for blending the sweet and the sour. On “Istanbul,” the guitars are so Glam-tastic they threaten to send listeners into paroxysms of T-Rextacy! Over a chunky backbeat, Morrissey unspools a cryptic tale of death and abduction in an exotic locale. “Earth..” is anchored by sprightly Spanish guitar, wocka-wocka synths, swirly organ and a propulsive rhythm. The The breezy melody

almost camouflages lyrics like “Humans are not really very humane.” On “Staircase…” the infectious tune is powered by see-saw synths, a pounding beat and soaring guitar. Morrissey paints a grim portrait of peer, parental and academic pressure. “March, April May, she crammed night and day, I hadn’t seen her in a while/ Staircase at the university, She threw herself down and her head split three ways.” Rippling Spanish arpeggios undercut this devastating tableau. Finally, “Kiss Me A lot,” seems wildly uncharacteristic. Morrissey must be talking to his cat or rabbit. (Certainly not an inhumane human). This unabashed love song is awash in flatulent synth horns, gamboling guitars and twinkly percussion. Morrissey repeatedly instructs (the rabbit) to “Kiss me a lot, kiss me all over my face, kiss me all over the place/And when you’ve kissed me, kiss me all over again. Sheesh, next time maybe cut the Prozac in half. Not every song works. “Smiler With A Knife” and “Mount Joy” suffer from “allverse-no-chorus” syndrome. “I’m Not A Man” opens with a minute and a half of ambient noise before really beginning. As the track simmers, Morrissey recites a predictable and pedantic litany of what it means to be a man. The album closes with the saturnine “Oboe Concerto.” Over sinuous synths and slithery bass lines, Morrissey is dour and despondent. “All I do is drink to absent friends, and there’s a song I can’t stand and it’s stuck in my head.” A rather doleful way to end an uneven effort. Morrissey is surrounded by crack musicians. Leading the pack are guitarists Boz Boorer and Jesse Tobias. Solomon Lee Walker handles bass, Matthew Ira Walker is on drums and percussion and Gustavo Manzur tackles keys, synths, trumpet, accordion, Flamenco guitar, Q-chord and didgeridoo! Morrissey’s casual misanthropy was interesting during his Smiths heyday and the beginning of his solo career, but 30 years on, it becomes a little grating. His views on vegetarianism, animal activism and pansexuality are well known. World Peace Is None Of Your Business has moments of greatness and moments of sheer tedium. Is it wrong to expect more?

PET PLACE Curing Cat Allergies Y

ou’re a single girl who owns cats, and you start dating a wonderful guy who is allergic to your fur babies! He can’t come to your apartment without having a wheezing attack. You have a child who suddenly develops an allergy to the cat whose been your “fuzzy faced child” for the past 10 years, and you can’t imagine giving him away (the cat, that is!). Years ago when I lived in Northern California and had 2 cats, my brother would start sneezing and his eyes would turn red after about an hour when he came to visit. On one trip, he suddenly realized he’d been at my house for hours without any symptoms, and asked, “What did you do, get rid of your cats?” I just did two simple things I read about in a book, I bathed the cats in Castille soap and installed a couple of air purifiers. Most people with allergies who have patience and commitment can overcome their condition and become happy cat owners. Most allergic reactions to cats can be well controlled by following the steps outlined below. These same techniques are also effective if you are allergic to dogs.

1. Use HEPA Air Filters - Cat allergies are primarily based by the protein Fel d 1 found in the saliva and dander. These air purifiers remove the dander out of the air, and may even help your allergies to pollens and other substances as well. Depending on your home size, you may need to purchase several of these filters. A highly recommended product is the Blue Rabbit air purifier made by Mitsubishi. 2. Keep the cats out of the bedroom - The little furballs may love to sleep on your pillow, but keep them away from your bedroom until you get your allergies under control. Keep the bedroom door closed

during the day. 3. Wash bedding in hot water - This is a good idea even when the cats are kept off the bed. Washing everything in 140 degree hot water at least twice monthly gets ride of both dust mite and cat allergens. 4. Use a high grade HEPA vacuum cleaner - Cat allergens are small and invasive, so you need to vacuum walls, carpet, flooring, and furniture, making use of the hand tools. Twice a week vacuuming is recommended. 5. Wash your hands after petting your cat - A strong anti-bacterial soap works best. Rubbing your eyes without washing hands can make your eyes itch. 6. Bathe the cat - If this sounds like a formidable task, a spray nozzle and hose attached to your sink can make it easier. Castille soap, available at Trader Joe’s, worked well for my cats. If bathing causes too much of a “cat fight”, you can put Allerpet “C” for Cats on a wet rag and wipe down the cat’s coat to get rid of the dander. 7. Confine your cats to one area of the house - This allows you to focus your attempts to control cat allergens to one area of the home. 8. Cover bedroom vents with cheesecloth

- This allows the air to flow through, but catches the allergy causing irritants. 9. Feed your cat a high quality diet - This may also include some raw food. A quality diet keeps the cat’s coat and skin healthy and minimizes dander and shedding. The book “The New Natural Cat” by Anitra Frazier, available from Amazon, has good information about improving your feline’s diet. The internet has lots of resources about controlling pet allergies. Improving your own diet may reduce your allergic reaction to animals. By making some simple changes in your home and your lifestyle, you can experience the joys of pet ownership. If you have a severe allergy, you should consult with your doctor and maybe show them a copy of this article. This is the “purrfect” time to add a playful feline friend to your household. Our county shelter, the Coachella Valley Animal Campus, has many beautiful cats and kittens (and dogs!). They’re located at 72-050 Pet Land Place, Thousand Palms. Call (760) 3433644 for more information or go online at www.rcdas.org to view their wonderful animals. jmcafee7@verizon.net

My Wild Wine Weekend with Bridget Bordeaux

O

nce when I was young, I decided to take off to France on my first adventure out of the states. And although I had some years of high school French, my plan was simply to drink plenty of wine as moi français always gets better after a few glasses. Wide-eyed, I landed in Paris and quickly made myself comfortably at home. But as the fun few weeks in the City of Light passed so swiftly, I knew I had to get to the south of France before all the money ran out. For whatever reason at the time, I took the route via the west coast with the Atlantic on my right. It was a decision that forever made me a Bordeaux wine lover as opposed probably to a Burgundy fan had I taken the eastern route through Bourgogne. Bordeaux is the largest fine wine district on earth. It is a symbol for great wine and the model for the whole world, with over 275,000 acres producing over 880 million bottles of wine every year. The area’s inventive blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cab Franc, Petite Verdot, Malbec, and Carménère as made for the great wines of history and affected the type of California Red Blend you may be drinking tonight. Getting off the train at the historic city of Bordeaux, I checked out the famed Port of the Moon where wine commerce has existed for over 600 years. I then ducked into a quiet looking bistro, for a meal and some wine, and soon found myself at a table with two very talkative women, who once they found out I was an American, insisted that they “show me around”. Little did I know that these women were famous here in France, and when they introduced themselves as Bridget Bordeaux and Marilyn Merlot—well, it sure kept things fun. And did they have contacts in this town or what! From many wine-nitch hole-inthe-walls to elegant restaurant bars, these women—and me in tow, seemingly had the Carte Blanche going on. Often joining us at the table, the girl’s proprietor friends kept popping up with this “new” rosé or that old Pomerol to enjoy and talk about. For as much as this town has been vino haven for so long, the wine conversations were fresh, enthusiastic with a joie-de-vivre ever present. Everyone here was proud to be Bordelaise. Needless to state, the scene was cinematic and dynamic, and in a matter of hours we were on horseback traipsing through the vineyards in Cantenac just south of the Margaux commune. The girls clearly had a destination in mind as we headed deep into the woods of huge trees and natural ponds. And there we came upon it: Chateau Cantemerle. A perfect Sleeping Beauty chateau of three hundred years past. Riding up to the historic building on horses was like traveling back in time.

It’s one of the oldest properties in the Bordeaux wine region. In the early ‘70s, many Bordeaux properties had not yet experienced the huge influx of monies that would come later on when wine was big-big business. Prior to 1981, when the Cantemerle estate was purchased by a wealthy corporation, it was not in the best of shape. Of the 284 acres that were planted when the estate was classified in 1855, only 49 acres were in working condition. But the disrepair only added to the charm and careworn staff knew the spirit of the place was as cherished as ever. In 1855, when the Classification of the Medoc took place, Chateau Cantemerle, 5th Growth, was accidentally left off the list of classed chateaux. It was at the insistence of Madame Villeneuve-Durfort that her property be reinstated in the classification. That re-addition became the first of only two changes ever in the Classification. (MoutonRothschild lobbied to 1st Growth in 1973) We were welcomed into the chateaux for the weekend as though we were family and were generously poured wine from time to time from their wine cellar. And we had the

pleasure of having their newly bottled 1970 vintage. Chateau Cantemerle is generally a medium bodied, light, fresh, elegantly styled Bordeaux wine that drinks well young and is usually best enjoyed during the first two decades of life. The 1970 Vintage notes from the Wine Advocate state: “This wine continues to evolve beautifully and has turned out to be one of the sleepers of the vintage. The fragrant bouquet of plums, fruitcake, cedar, and spicy oak is followed by a mediumbodied, concentrated wine with gobs of fruit, excellent length, and overall balance. The wine appears to have just entered the plateau of maturity. This is undoubtedly the best Cantemerle made during the seventies.” At our final meal at the chateau, the amiable and rotund cellar-master spoke poignantly about losing his own small winery across the woods last year, when one of his

workers negligently allowed the fire-torches, that lit the wine cellar at night, to catch the whole place on fire. He lost all the wine in his barrels—except for one. But he talked more about the great feast his family and staff went on to enjoy and celebrate with that one barrel of wine, in spite of the catastrophe. “What was done, is done and no one died. We will make wine again. A votre santé!—to life and good health!” In the year 2000, the vintage in Bordeaux was majestic. I went on the futures market and got me a couple-three cases of Chateau Cantemerle for about less than $10 a bottle. When the cases were delivered about three years later, you couldn’t keep down the memories of some wild weekend in Bordeaux.

Cafe Des Beaux Arts in palm desert

T

here are a few restaurants in our valley that I would consider landmarks. They are the gems of the valley that have been serving for twenty or more years and have a loyal following. One such establishment, located in Palm Desert on El Paseo, is the well-known, Café Des Beaux Arts. This French Bistro has been delighting locals and tourists since 1993. Although they open for breakfast and lunch, I was recently given the pleasure to enjoy an amazing dinner with my girlfriend while enjoying our deserts’ mountain views! We were seated promptly on a patio in which nearly every table boasts a view of the El Paseo promenade and gorgeous surrounding mountains. We were pleasantly greeted by our server and his assistant and provided warm baguettes and water. After we made our wine selection from an impressive wine list, we ordered and shortly after received appetizers. I loved every bite of my Escargots Bourguignonne. It was savory with garlic and herbs and went well with the crusty baguette. My date would decline my offer to share (though I did not mind) yet offered me a taste of her Salade Des Beaux Arts. This was a great salad full of flavor with a creamy vinaigrette, thinly shaved prosciutto, hearts of palm, tomatoes and goat cheese over chopped romaine lettuce. I cannot express enough how much I appreciate a great quality salad. This was top notch and we had just begun! Before our entrée, we shared a half portion of Linguini with Baby Clams Mariniere with a touch of white wine and shallots. The clams were delicious and the pasta a perfect al dente. I would definitely enjoy a full portion

20

as an entrée! Our pasta was presented with warmed side plates for sharing; this nice touch did not go unnoticed. Our entrées were certainly the stars of the show. I ate every bite of the mouth-watering Roasted Rack of Lamb Provencale with Dijon, served with a twice baked potato and delicious creamed spinach. I praised myself for ordering the best item on the menu until I tried the amazing Coq Au Vin placed in front of my date. The chicken was fall off the bone tender with pearl onions, mushrooms, and bacon in the most amazing burgundy wine sauce. I have tried Coq Au Vin in other local restaurants, even some that boast theirs to be a signature dish, but these so-called “creative” restaurants can deconstruct their dish all they want and no amount of meat glue will get the beauty and flavor presented at Café Des Beaux Arts! I had to ask the owner about our meal and I learned that this Chicken entrée recipe was from none other than the famed chef, Paul Bocuse, most famous for aiding in the creation and uprising of Nouvelle Cuisine and French Gastronomy. This award winning chef’s talents are recreated at this French Bistro to perfection! We finished our meal with a traditional Crepes Suzette. These thin crepes were delicate and bursting with bright citrus flavors with a presence of Grand Marnier. Truly Incroyable! In addition to owning this Coachella Valley landmark, Didier Bloch has a talent for storytelling. A former journalist himself, Didier collaborated with Cynthia Meckl-Sloan to create a novelty cartoon book highlighting the dessert lifestyle that you can see at www.

palmspringslite.com. Bloch also contributed to a play currently running in Los Angeles called, “Marilyn… Madness and Me” that will also be featured at The Rancho Mirage Library with a live reading by the actors themselves November 19th. Café Des Beaux Arts is open from 8am to 9pm serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There are nightly specials and happy hour items as well. With great food and prime

location, this French Bistro is near the top of my list for highly recommended restaurants this season. Make your reservations and see for yourself. www.cafedesbeauxarts.com 760-779-0142

Movie Reviews with Robin E. Simmons

LAUREL & HARDY FOREVER

A

ll over the world, every second of every day around the clock, someone is laughing out loud at a Laurel & Hardy comedy. A living stream of laughter emanating into the cosmic void is not a bad legacy from two exceptional members of our erratic species that sometimes seems hell-bent on destroying our planet and ourselves. Perhaps it is that crazy, self-destructive nature, the constant fighting, quibbling, misunderstandings, grandiose plans gone wrong and the epic, deranged, escalating acts of getting even that makes the films of

22

Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy so universally relatable. Clearly, we see ourselves. But what makes The Boys themselves so popular is that underneath it all, there’s genuine love. No matter how horrible the mess they create, or who is truly at fault, they are always back together again with high hopes for whatever new adventure lies ahead. We intuitively understand they love each other even though they never hugged on screen or spoke of their mutual high regard; it was always crystal clear they were best friends. No matter what. The purest pleasure of their best films is

Screeners No.133

that amidst all the anarchic antics, there’s that unexpected feeling of affection that leaks off the screen into our hearts and souls. Stan and Ollie are icons of the best and worst of our human traits. Childlike and innocent, they give us permission -- no, they force us -- to laugh at the unfair vicissitudes of life; yet, at the same time, give us hope that somehow, someday, all will finally be OK in spite of their endless on screen attempts at revenge -- or never understanding there’s no such thing as “getting even.” The mystery of why we laugh or even what makes something funny is illusive. Even Stan Laurel said, “I only know how to make people laugh, not why.” There are reports that when Stan and his wife (he had five) went to a club, he was sometimes asked to stand and take a bow or say something. Stan would step into the spotlight, slowly blink in otherworldly bewilderment, literally saying and doing nothing. Soon, the place was roaring with laughter. Stan Laurel understood that the dead center, the sweet spot, the bull’s eye of comedy was a Zen stillness that says: Here I am, I didn’t ask to be here and I have no idea what it all means. It’s our most fundamental philosophical dilemma. That’s why there’s nothing left but to release a cosmic laugh in the face of God. Stan Laurel was a genius that ranks with Bach, Michelangelo, Tesla, Einstein, Twain and Hawking. He was the genius behind the duo. He tapped directly into our collective DNA that recognizes the inexplicably absurd inexactitudes yet oddly mystical paradoxes of life itself. According to Jerry Lewis, who knew and idolized Stan Laurel, it was Stan who discovered Ollie. One day on the Hal Roach lot, Stan, fresh from the UK and a US vaudeville tour, he spotted a large man carrying a pipe with red flags on both ends. Stan said to Lewis he immediately wanted to do something to upset the worker carrying the pipe and asked to meet him. Stan invited Ollie to step in front of the camera. Ollie said, “Anything would be better than what I’m doing, but I don’t know anything about filmmaking, acting or comedy.” Stan said, “That’s perfect.” Soon, Roach paired them on screen and there was magic. Ollie’s bewilderment of -- and love for -- Stan was genuine and the audience recognized it. Vivendi/RHI offers a 10-disc core set that contains 57 of the 99 films L&H made. The restored sound films, shorts and features come in a compact book-style case with sturdy card stock sleeves.

Book Review

Gone Girl Again

I

f you haven’t read Gone Girl (Crown Publishing, 419 pages) by Gillian Flynn, the movie version is now in theaters. Flynn also wrote the screenplay. So if you liked the movie, then you will certainly enjoy the book! To date Flynn’s novel has sold more than 8.5 million copies! The film adaptation, directed by David Fincher and starring Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike, is already a box office success. Audiences are made up of both those who have read the book and those who have not. Even though more Highlights: 1932’s THE MUSIC BOX won an Oscar as Best Short Subject; PARDON US and CHUMP AT OXFORD are the rarely seen extended versions publicly previewed during the editing process; THE PERFECT DAY includes an optional Vitaphone disc track without incidental music and a faintly heard heard expletive; POLITIQUERAS is the 56 minute Spanish version of CHICKENS COME HOME and features Hadjii Ali’s truly astounding vaudeville act that must be seen to be believed; the TRIBUTE TO LAUREL AND HARDY, a too short 40 minute featurette on Disc 10, reveals the friendship, inspiration and love for Stan and Ollie in new interviews with Jerry Lewis, Dick Van Dyke among others. Some of the films seem to be a continuation of the same story. For instance TIT FOR TAT flows naturally into THEM THAR HILLS. And HOG WILD can be seen as a prequel to COUNTY HOSPITAL. There are more titles that work in the same way with wonderful results when paired backto-back. Missing from the collection is the truly disturbing and demented BABES IN TOYLAND AKA MARCH OF THE WOODEN SOLDIERS (available from Legend in a superbly colorized, pristine transfer the way Stan Laurel wished it had been filmed). So much more can be said about these wonderful films – and has, in Randy Skretvedt’s well-researched “LAUREL AND HARDY: The magic Behind the Movies.” Laughter is indeed the best medicine for our very human condition. Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy understood this. This is a set for the digital library. Comments? RobinESimmons@aol.com

Gone Girl

By Gillian Flynn Fiction women read the novel than men, both are equally going to theaters to see Gone Girl. The subject of relationships and marriage is universal. What adult can’t relate to falling in love, getting married and the uncertain future one faces with the stranger that sleeps next to you in bed. Yes, some marriages seem to be made in heaven, but can feel like being trapped in hell. The novel is a provocative, psychological thriller of crazy love and twisted obsession. Gone Girl explores the relationship between a husband and a wife who must come to terms about their future. And their past. On the morning of Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary, the two are trying to hold it together after a challenging relocation from New York City to Nick’s small hometown in Missouri. Told in alternating first-person accounts, the entire narrative unfolds as both the wife and husband intimately share with the reader their individual perspectives on their marriage and life as a couple. When Amy disappears, Nick becomes the primary suspect. Amy is the “gone girl,” and her diary tells the reader about their relationship from her point of view. Or does it? As an investigation unfolds, the reader gets an inside look at the tense moments and psychological turmoil Nick is put through. There is the confusion and horror of not knowing what might have happened

to his wife, compounded by the doubting police, the concerned relatives and the obsessed media. There are no guidebooks on how to act when a spouse goes missing. Is it right to judge someone based on his behavior alone? Maybe. In this story, Nick is not good at being a distraught husband. He is calm, charming and aloof -- borderline inappropriate? What makes Gone Girl a compelling read is that things are not as they seem. With every chapter going back and forth between Amy and Nick, we learn something new about them and their relationship. As evidence is collected, and the case continues to go unsolved, Amy and Nick reveal new information about themselves -how they fell in love and their troubled past. Although the reader cannot be certain, it does not look good for Nick. But even the precious, innocent and beautiful Amy -- as portrayed by the media -- has a very dark side. Of course reading Gone Girl is a different experience than watching it in a theater. The novel delivers a horrifying dilemma that only continues to deliciously worsen. Gone Girl debuted in June 2012 and spent over a year on the bestseller list. Certainly Flynn can tell a compelling story, and the construction of the narrative is intensely clever. But it is Flynn’s astute

insight into the human psyche where Gone Girl, the novel, really shines. In many ways, Gone Girl is as much a look at the challenges and strains of modern marriage and the changing roles played in relationships, as it is a murder mystery. The author asks, of course through her characters, how well do we really know the mate we’ve chosen? Why, in even good relationships, do some people become selfdestructive? Flynn writes in both the male and female voice. As a woman author, she aptly draws Nick and fairly actualizes him as a rounded, complicated, but very real guy. There is no man bashing, other than from the angry media that demands justice for his missing wife. Flynn is equally honest about women. She does not tread lightly regarding the evil women are capable of administering to the men they “love.” There are many great passages in this book but I particularly appreciated “Amy’s” description of “cool girls” and the challenges of being an “only child.” Nick has observation about twins and sibling order that give the characters additional depth. Intentionally or not, Gone Girl gives us a look at our own insatiable appetite for sensational human drama. The author taps into our desire to know and understand the details of a horrendous event. She also illustrates how quick we are to circumstantially condemn, disregarding “innocent until proven guilty.” In more than one way, Flynn shows us our hunger for story. Flynn’s novel Gone Girl is an atypical psychological thriller and picks up momentum with every short chapter. Even if you saw the movie, you will still enjoy reading the book.

RealEstate

September

I

By Bruce cathcart

t is as if summer can’t make up its mind whether to stay or go this year. With the month of October ahead of us and the month of September behind us, we are seeing more and more Realtors smiling again in anticipation of not only cooler weather but hopefully of a hotter sales market! Real estate wise it has been a long, dry summer with the lowest number of sales recorded in recent years. Weather wise, well that is a different story all together as Thousand Palms, Indian Wells, Bermuda Dunes and La Quinta all experienced what is being called the 700 year flood when on September 8th mother nature dropped nearly 3” of rain on them in less than an hour… got flood insurance? First let’s take a look at the data for last month’s real estate activity and then I will wade into the flood issue. Last month (September), according to the Desert Area MLS (as of 10/01/14) there were 562 pendings of residential properties in the Coachella Valley. There were only 435 pendings in the previous month (August) representing a significant increase in sales activity and signaling the end of the summer sales drought. In August there were 518 solds and in September (as we predicted) there were only 482 solds representing another 7% drop in closings. When compared to last year, we closed 524 homes in September representing a year over year decrease of approximately 9% in home sales. Closing data is always a month behind pending data and so with a 23% increase in openings last month we are about to see our closings start to increase. This is our seasonal sales trend here in the desert and it would be cause for alarm if this didn’t happen. It should be noted however that we are still far behind last year’s number of total closings and even though we have seen modest gains in prices (perhaps averaging as much as 5% for the entire year) that is still not an indication of a market in full recovery. The new term I have been seeing in the mainstream press a lot lately to describe this market is “stagnant”. If we look at stagnant as the new norm I would prefer to call it “stable”. Unfortunately, as I see it, there are too many variables out in the world today that are set to destabilize the market in the downward direction, the most obvious of which is the continued threat of higher interest rates. Again, we will just have to wait and see and in the meantime enjoy the current “stability” in the market. Adding to that stability, overall inventory available to buyers this month was up significantly (approximately 13.5%) from 2,857 properties available for sale at the beginning of September to 3,242 properties available for sale at the end of September reversing a trend that started back in February 2014. Increased inventory,

increased sales activity at slightly higher prices… I can see why Realtors are again. So you thought your homeowner’s insurance on your house covered flooding? Many valley residents discovered with the recent flood that without a very costly, specific flood insurance policy, your regular homeowner’s insurance only covers certain types of flooding. Like the flooding caused by a broken water pipe in your home or if a tree falls on your roof during a rainstorm and allows the rain inside but not when the water comes from a 700 year storm that sends a flash flood bursting in through your front door! “Natural Hazard” flood insurance is only required by your lender if you are located in a 100 year or greater “flood zone” as determined on the FEMA Flood Insurance map. Unfortunately very few of the homes that flooded were located in the “flood zone” or had flood insurance. If you are fearful that your home may be flooded again, flood insurance is available whether or not you are located in a designated flood zone. While the odds may be against having another storm of the magnitude of this last one for several hundred years, flood insurance still might be something worth considering. In any event, having experienced a 700 year flood sure makes for a great story to tell your kids and grandkids about the next time they complain about a little rain! Real Estate Tip of the month: If you were one of the unlucky folks who incurred serious flood damage from the recent storm contact your City or Riverside County via their websites. There are special forms there to be filled out describing the damage and cost you incurred due to the flooding. Together the Cities and County are attempting to file a claim to obtain special disaster relief from the state and federal governments. If successful, there may be special grants or low cost loans made available to local governing bodies and victims of the flood. Stage Your Property to Sell Faster and Net More!

R

eal estate staging is the act of preparing and showcasing residential property for sale. It is a systematic and coordinated methodology in which knowledge of real estate, home renovations and creative design principles are applied to attract a buyer. Real estate staging origins began in the late 70’s but the popularity really found its niche in the early 1990’s when the national real estate market was sluggish and listing times were long. Real estate staging is now an established part of marketing homes for sale in cities around the country and can work in a strong or weak market. I spoke Tianna Woods of Power House Staging in Palm Desert and this is what she had to say about staging your property, “A majority of home buyers only know what they can see, not the way it could be. The way we live in our house is not the way we should market and sell our house.” A professionally staged home is an investment that is usually less than the cost of a price reduction due to a lingering listing. Powerhouse Staging Company believes it’s a significant financial advantage to the home seller and Realtor! There is a distinction between decorating your home and staging it to sell. It can be hard to understand at first, but if you don’t know the difference, you might not sell your house as quickly as you like. Getting rid of clutter and having fewer but larger accessories is a great place to start. Making sure your home isn’t taste specific which doesn’t mean your rooms should be devoid of color. Instead, keep color schemes simple. Although everyone has different tastes in decor and furnishings, most people want a home that is welcoming, functional, peaceful and organized.

by Craig Michaels

Preparing the property involves all or part of cleaning, de-cluttering, updating and repairing, while showcasing is the process of arranging furniture, accessories, art and light. When possible, Powerhouse Staging Company always attempts to use the sellers own furnishings to keep costs down. However at times due to condition, style, taste specific furnishings or maybe even lack of furnishings, many properties may require furniture or decor rentals. When renting furnishings it is best to source from multiple furniture outlets for a more unique design concept and more style choices. Targeting your neighborhoods demographic and staying current with mass appeal styles and trends is ideal. The main objective is to create mass appeal and to position your property above your competitions. Tianna Woods has studied Interior Design and Space Planning at Saddleback College and the Interior Design Institute in addition to being a full time Realtor. Incorporating her love of design & real estate, she created Powerhouse Staging Company seven years ago. She is a certified by CSP- Certified Staging Professional, the most comprehensive and recognized home staging certification in the USA and Canada. If you would like to contact her about Staging or selling your property you can email her at: powerhousestagingcompany@gmail.com or call her at: 760.799.6843. Was Russia Behind JPMorgan Cyberattack?

L

ast week, JP Morgan aka Chase Bank disclosed that the August data breach of their computer systems by hackers affected more than the 1 million customer accounts previously announced. The actual number was 83 million - 76 million consumers and 7 million small businesses. An SEC filing by JP Morgan that disclosed this data breach mentions that “about nine” other financial institutions were breached by the same hackers. Other bank names were not given. Beyond the magnitude of these ten data breaches, this round of hacking was of particular concern to the FBI and federal agencies as it is believed to have been done by “Putin sympathizers” in retaliation to sanctions imposed against Russia due to the conflict in the Ukraine. The delay in the public learning of this breach is because JP Morgan believes that no account information was taken. JP Morgan states that hackers did get customer names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses though - just not account numbers.

According to The New York Times, the most valuable thing that the hackers stole is a file that “contained a list of every application and program deployed on standard JP Morgan computers that hackers can crosscheck with known, or new, vulnerabilities in each system in a search for a backdoor entry.” A former JP Morgan employee said to The New York Times that the theft of this file is the equivalent to stealing “the schematics to the Capitol (you) can’t just switch out every single door and window pane overnight.” This means that the hackers now know of multiple ways to potentially hack into JP Morgan computer systems as well as other banks and businesses that use similar apps and programs. So what does this mean to you? Criminal groups know where you live, your phone number and email address. As it relates to your bank account, a consumer account is protected from fraud by federal laws that limit losses to no more than $50 most of the time. Small business bank accounts do not have the same protections as consumers. As such, anyone with a business account needs to remain on high alert for fraud for the foreseeable future. This is because JP

Morgan, or any bank for that matter, has no obligation to make a business account whole in the event of fraud. Business accounts at banks are subject to the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC). UCCs are state laws that limit the liability on a bank as it relates to online services. While it would be a public relations nightmare to any bank if they did not make a client whole after a data breach, small business owners need to remain vigilant against potential fraud. Cybercrime experts believe that this latest series of cyberattacks will lead to years of fraud. Criminals will use this information in conjunction with public information from

sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and Google to craft convincing scams meant to steal money or other passwords from potential victims. To protect yourself from cybercrime, never give anyone your online user IDs or passwords, including representatives of the bank or business that you have the online account with. Use robust passwords on your accounts that include special characters. Get text or email alerts from your bank when certain transactions occur. Beyond virus protection software, buy fraud protection from a credit agency like Experian that will alert you of potential attempts at identity theft. Never download free things like emoticons, files, videos or other programs onto your computer. When you download a game app, think twice about programs that want access to your contact lists or other sensitive information. As criminal activity is sanctioned by some of America’s rivals and even the most sophisticated of companies like JP Morgan cannot prevent the data breaches, you need to be more careful than ever when going online.

contact the police to report my husband hitting me. I just want to make a report and not have the police come out. Of course RSO rolled on the scene and the wife again explained she just wanted a report but her husband was arrested. Another similar case was a well-respected woman, who was a “cutter”. She called the police and told them her husband hit her over the head with a pot and showed the police the red mark she made. She also explained she did not want her husband arrested but just wanted him out of the house. Again he was arrested with $50,000 statutory bail. The next morning the husband and wife showed up in my office. The wife explained she is a cutter and abuses herself and just wanted her husband out of the home that night and thus hit herself over the head with a frying pan. She was going to pay his legal fees out of her personal business account just as she had paid the $50,000 bail. I asked her to provide a declaration and called my paralegal to take down the info and type it up. The wife read it and said it was correct but wanted to sleep on it. The next morning she called and said if this confession mentioning that she was a cutter surfaced, she would be fired from her job. I presented the DA with the unsigned declaration my paralegal had typed up along with my paralegal’s declaration that the victim gave this info to us and confirmed it was correct. I included a copy of the wife’s retainer check and bail receipt. My declaration, as an officer of the

court, along with that of the paralegal convinced the DA not to file the case. These are examples but clearly not the majority of the cases that are righteous DV cases. DOMESTIC VIOLENCE REVISITED

W

e all agree that violence of any kind against a spouse or significant other is wrong. However sometimes one party does not realize that what they have done is Domestic Violence. Many people know how to push the buttons of their spouse for instance. They argue and shove their spouse without leaving a mark and then the spouse (usually the man) pushes his beloved back. Often it is not the spouse that calls the police but someone else who hears the arguing. Once the police roll on the scene they will arrest the perpetrator. Statutory bail of $50,000 will have to be posted. However, not every Domestic Violence call has merit. Sometimes there are false accusations made by a spouse to gain leverage in a soon to be filed or already filed divorce/ child custody case. Those accusations are usually made by the wife and sometimes they are just used as “banked” leverage for a possible future divorce. Of course most Domestic Violence claims have merit and I by no means condone domestic violence. However we must be aware that false accusations have happened. I had a case where a couple had rented at the Desert Springs Villas and arrived with their two kids and nanny. They had reservations across the street at Morton’s at 6pm. They ordered a pizza from the same shopping center and requested delivery at 5pm. At 5:15 the husband called to complain the pizza had not arrived and were

assured it had left 10 minutes earlier. At 5:30 still no pizza and the husband called again and said put another pie in the oven and he “would pay for both.” He was assured they would do so and at 5:50 there was still no pizza. Again he called and was advised the delivery boy had left. The husband then called the front desk at the Marriott and explained they were leaving for dinner across the street and wanted to be sure the kids and nanny got food. They ordered the large” bone in” steak for two but because they were aggravated they did not eat much and asked for a doggy bag. The husband ordered a shot of Louis 13 which was $135 and his wife complained “how can you spend $135 on one shot”. He chugged the drink and left his card for his wife to sign and went to the car. His wife got there and said “I bet you forgot the friggin doggy bag”. He reached down by his right foot with his right hand and picked up the doggy bag. He intended to show her the bag but instead hit her in the left eye with the “bone in” bag. Her eye began to swell and he kissed it and apologized as they returned to the villa and he went to bed. His wife put ice on her eye and called her best friend in Beverly Hills who was married to a lawyer. Her friend said “in case you ever want to file for divorce it would be nice to have a record of your husband hitting you”. Her friend suggested she call the police to make a report. The wife called the front desk and said I want to

Spread The Word.. It’s National Fire Prevention Week!

F

ire Departments across the country are spreading the word as this week is National Fire prevention Week. “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month!” are the words of wisdom and safety says Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna. Working smoke alarms can make a life-saving difference in a fire. According to the latest National Fire Protection Association, working smoke alarms cut the chance of dying in a fire in half. Meanwhile, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. “In a fire, seconds count,” reminds Chief DiGiovanna. “Roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported at night between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when most people are asleep. Home smoke alarms can alert people to a fire before it spreads, giving everyone enough time to get out.” Install smoke alarms in every bedroom,

outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home. This way, when one sounds, they all do. Test alarms at least monthly by pushing the test button. Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old or sooner if they don’t respond properly. Make sure everyone in the home knows the sound of the smoke alarm and understands what to do when they hear it. For additional information visit NFPA’s website at www.firepreventionweek.org. sports scene The One Word ALL Sports Fans’ Hope Hinges On..

T

here’s fast, powerful, prolific, awesome, unstoppable, remarkable, smart, classy, even badass. There’s terrible, awful, sorry, undisciplined, horrible, thin, weak, even The Raiders. There’s the good and the bad in sports and we have a variety of adjectives to describe the varying levels of production and success, failure and futility. But through a wild week of baseball playoffs, college football upheaval and the first 5 weeks of NFL action, the one word that describes teams who win and separates them from those who can’t is dependable. According to Webster’s, dependable means: able to be trusted to do or provide what is needed: reliable. But as it were, teams that failed in the postseason or have been schizophrenic in football are anything but “reliable” or “able to be trusted to do what is needed”. In baseball we saw teams fail to address what was needed and in football teams aren’t even reliably bad, let alone reliably good. Here’s what we learned in baseball: You CAN’T depend on the big-time contracts to deliver big-time players. The Angels signed Albert Pujols, Josh Hamilton, and Mike Trout to a combined $519 million dollars.. In their first postseason together, they went a combined 3 for 37 with a whopping 4 RBI. That’s Obamatype spending/production ratio. You CAN’T depend on big arms. The A’s and the Tigers corralled the most attention at baseball’s trading deadline and acquired Jon

Lester and David Price, respectively. But in the hot crucible of the one-game playoff, Lester got shelled by the Royals, allowing 6 runs on 8 hits through 7 innings of work. Meanwhile, Price, the 2012 American League Cy Young winner became the first pitcher in baseball history to lose his first 5 post season starts when the Orioles beat the Tigers to sweep the 4th highest payroll in baseball. You CAN’T depend on a team that amasses the best regular season record to put out the best postseason lineup. The fact that Mike Scioscia was willing to dump $25-millionman Josh Hamilton in the 7 spot after he had just returned from injury told you how much confidence MLB’s longest tenured manager had in his slugger. BUT why he’d play Hamilton at all is a curious decision as the Royals coming to town were a fast, precocious team that plays with a feverish pace. Hamilton is a slug, whose half-hearted swings look more like me in a batting cage than a professional baseball player in the postseason. On the flip side, you CAN depend on momentum carrying a team through slowminded competition as the Orioles and Royals did to the Tigers and Orioles respectively. You CAN depend on playing hard and fast will destroy the competition. The Royals swept the Angels and beat the A’s with 12 stolen bases. No other team in the postseason has more than 2 as of print. Kansas City leads all postseason teams in RBIs and walks as well. So they get on base, then stole bags and pressured

the defense into mistakes. It’s a brilliant and fantastically fun form of baseball to watch. Here’s what we learned in the NFL: You can’t depend on good teams playing well or even bad teams playing poorly. The Tennessee Titans put up more points in the first half of their early game than the likes of the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, New Orleans Saints and all the other top-flight NFL offenses playing. And just when you think they might be a sneaky-decent team, they got carved up by Brian Hoyer and the Cleveland Browns. This NFL has few teams that have proven themselves to be dependable. One week the Patriots are getting blown out on Monday Night Football and the next, they’re destroying the last unbeaten team in the league, the Cincinnati Bengals, on Sunday Night Football. One week the New York Giants look lost and are 0-2. 3 weeks later, they look solid and haven’t lost since. One week the Carolina Panthers are getting destroyed by Steve Smith and the Baltimore Ravens, the next, they storm from behind to beat the Chicago Bears, who continue to swing wildly between impressive and disappointing. The next sentence I write perfectly illustrates how bizarre a season we’re watching.

The most dependable team in the NFL right now is the San Diego Chargers. That’s right. They boast the top scoring defense in the NFL, tied for the longest winning streak in the league, have the first quarter MVP in Philip Rivers, a resurgent veteran in Antonio Gates who has as many touchdown receptions as juggernauts Antonio Brown and Brandon Marshall, and a budding star in Branden Oliver. But the Chargers have been one of the most undependable teams in the NFL the past decade. So them being the most dependable THIS season illustrates where sports fans find themselves. Oh, one other thing you CAN depend on: an NHL season full of great hockey leading up to the best postseason in sports. In the meantime, enjoy the ever changing, ever evolving theater that is the world of sports. Julie Buehler hosts the Coachella Valley’s most popular sports talk radio show, “Buehler’s Day Off” every day from 3-6 on 1010 KXPS, the valley’s all sports station. T

he Heat is positioned to potentially build another super team in two years when the NBA receives a major infusion of cash. The league’s salary cap is expected to skyrocket after the 2015-16 season thanks to new national broadcasting contracts that will triple league television revenue. Beginning with the 2016-17 season, ESPN and Turner Sports will pay the NBA an average of $2.7 billion annually over the next nine years for exclusive rights, according to reports. The league announced the deals on Monday. In other words, everyone in the NBA is about to get even richer and the league’s salary cap for the 2016-17 season has been projected at more than $80 million. The cap this season is $63 million. “Everyone benefits from it, and it’s great that our game continues to grow that way,” said Heat guard Dwyane Wade. Many franchises already have set themselves up to maximize the opportunity. Miami enters the 2016-17 season with just three players under contract: center Chris Bosh, rookie point guard Shabazz Napier and power forward Josh McRoberts. “Obviously, we’re not one of the biggest markets, but I’m sure, as we always do, we’ll

maximize it as much as possible,” said Wade, who signed a two-year deal in the offseason to set himself up for perhaps one last big contract. So much is still unknown about how the influx of money will affect league dynamics, but the Heat has a history of thinking big. In a letter to fans this summer, Heat owner Micky Arison said the Heat “wasn’t done; not even close.” “As a Miami HEAT fan, this is what you have come to expect from us,” Arison wrote. “We are laser-focused on the present and the task at hand of defending our Eastern Conference championship with the East being described as ‘wide open,’ while also positioning ourselves for maximum flexibility and maneuverability in the future.” Depending on how much Arison would be willing to spend, the Heat could engineer another super team around Bosh, and presumably Wade and Udonis Haslem during what is sure to be the wildest free agency period in league history. The Heat could go after franchise players, like Kevin Durant, the star for the Oklahoma City Thunder and reigning MVP, who will be a free agent after the 2015-16 season. Last summer, the Heat was hoping for the

best, but also planning for the worst. Neither happened, even though the loss of LeBron James to Cleveland was a major defeat. But, the Heat secured Bosh to a long-term deal. That did two things for the franchise: It allowed President Pat Riley and CEO Nick Arison to keep the team competitive in the short term, and also position the club for the spending bonanza on the horizon. Of course, the catch to the Heat’s forward thinking is that so much money is about to be pumped into the league that it might not matter. The extra money could be the league’s great equalizer. The Heat currently has just over $32 million on the books beyond the 2015-16 season. Assuming the team remains relatively the same over the next two years, general manager Andy Elisburg would have around $50 million to add pieces for the 2016-17 season. The Lakers, Knicks and Nets are also expected to be major players. For example,

the Lakers currently have less than $9 million tied to existing contracts after the 2015-16 season. Beyond the salary-cap ramifications, there is also the question of revenue sharing between players and owners. The new TV money raises the possibility of another work stoppage. The collective bargaining agreement runs through the 2020-21 season, but both owners and the players can opt out of the deal following the 2016-17 season. “More money; more problems,” Heat forward Danny Granger said. “I think that’s going be true when it comes to that next deal. When you see numbers like that, the league revenue tripling and the sale of the Clippers going for so much money — that’s just a bridge we’ll have to cross when we get there.” Founder of Silex Strategies L.L.C. providing sales and consulting in Insurance, Retirement, Real Estate and Taxes through New York Life and NY Life Securities. et Tested Coachella Valley will offer quick, confidential and painless HIV tests and fun prizes as lead sponsor for the Mecca FRC Resource Fair. On National Latino HIV/AIDS Awareness Day on October 15, the general public is invited to join Get Tested Coachella Valley/ Hazte la Prueba Valle de Coachella for free HIV testing, giveaways and entertainment at the Mecca FRC Resource Fair from 2 to 6 p.m. In an effort to reduce the spread of HIV in the Latino community, Get Tested Coachella Valley’s Mobile HIV Testing Clinic will offer confidential rapid oral swab HIV tests and $10 grocery gift cards for those who test, as well as fun giveaways like insulated lunch bags and water bottles for the general public. As lead sponsor for this event, Get Tested Coachella Valley will also emcee part of the on-stage program to increase public knowledge about the virus and the importance of HIV testing. HIV is a critical public health concern in the Latino community. About 1 in 50 Latinos will be diagnosed with HIV during their lifetimes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Furthermore, Latinos made up about 16% of the U.S. population but accounted for 21% of new HIV infections nationally in 2010 -- a rate three times that of whites. It is an especially pressing concern in the Coachella Valley, where the rate of HIV is more than double the national rate and where Latinos comprise 55% of the local population, according to the latest U.S. Census. “We are fortunate that this year’s Mecca FRC Resource Fair falls on National Latino HIV/AIDS Awareness Day,” said Susan Unger, Project Director of Get Tested Coachella Valley. “Our campaign is committed to making HIV testing an integral part of the healthcare picture in the Latino community – not only on this national awareness day but throughout the year. By accessing education and testing, members of the Latino community are empowered for good health.”

The Mecca FRC Resource Fair connects local families -- including those of Coachella Valley farm workers -- with more than 100 non-profit and public agencies in an effort to create healthy lifestyles and communities. Many of the participating agencies are Community Partners of the Get Tested Coachella Valley campaign. Between 1,500 and 2,000 people are expected to attend. The event will be held at the Mecca Family Service Center and Community Health Clinic (91-275 66th Ave., Mecca) on Wednesday, October 15 from 2 to 6 p.m. Get Tested Coachella Valley is a three-year, $5 million public health initiative dedicated to dramatically reducing HIV infections by making voluntary HIV testing a routine standard in medical practice and ensuring linkage to care. The campaign was launched in 2014 under the leadership of Desert AIDS Project and is driven by a coalition of more than 50 Community Partners including the Riverside County Department of Public Health; the region’s major hospitals; elected officials; and leaders of community- and faith-based organizations, educational institutions, businesses, and foundations. Additional information and resources are offered in both English and Spanish at www. gettestedcoachellavalley.org and www. haztelapruebavalledecoachella.org.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY Week of October 9

ARIES (March 21-April 19): Situation #1: If you meet resistance or doubt, say this: “Ha! This diversion can’t slow me down, because I am in possession of an invisible magical sword!” And then brandish a few charismatic swipes of your sword to prove that you mean business. Situation #2: If angst and worry are preventing your allies from synchronizing their assets with yours, say this: “Begone, dread! For with the power of my wicked crazy songs, I am the destroyer of fear.” And then sing your wicked crazy songs. Situation #3: If you’re finding it hard to discern the difference between useless, ugly monsters and useful, beautiful monsters, say this: “I am a useful, beautiful monster!” Your kind will flock to your side. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): In her poem “Advice to Myself,” Louise Erdrich speaks of the human heart as “that place you don’t even think of cleaning out. That closet stuffed with savage mementos.” I invite you to use her observations as a prod, Taurus. Now is an excellent time to purge the savage mementos from your heart, and clean the whole place up as best as you can. You don’t have to get all OCD about it. There’s no need to scour and scrub until everything’s spotless. Even a half-hearted effort will set in motion promising transformations in your love life. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): I hope you will learn more in the next eight months than you have ever before learned in a comparable period. I hope you will make a list of all the subjects you would love to study and all the skills you would love to master, and then devise a plan to gather the educational experiences with which you will reinvent yourself. I hope you will turn your curiosity on full-blast and go in quest of revelations and insights and epiphanies, smashing through the limits of your understanding as you explore the frontiers of sweet knowledge. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Three times a week, I take a hike along a rough path through an oak forest. I say it’s rough because it’s strewn with loose rocks. If I don’t survey the ground as I move, I’m constantly turning my ankles. Or at least that was the case until last week. For two days, with the help of a rake, I cleared many of those bothersome obstacles off the trail. It took several hours, but now the way is smoother. My eyes are free to enjoy the sights that aren’t so close to the ground. I recommend that you do similar work. Stop tolerating inconveniences and irritations that hobble you. Get your foundations in shape to serve you better. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): American author Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was ahead of his time. He created the genre of the detective story and mastered the art of Gothic horror tales. According to the Internet Movie Database, 240 films have referenced themes from his work. British writer Aldous Huxley wasn’t a fan of Poe, though. He said Poe was “too poetical -- the equivalent of wearing a diamond ring on every finger.” Judging from the astrological omens, I suspect you may be at risk to lapse into a diamond-ring-on-every-finger phase yourself, Leo. While I am all in favor of you unveiling more of your radiant beauty, I’m hoping you won’t go too far. How about wearing diamond rings on just four of your fingers? VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Republican Jody Hice is running for the U.S. House of Representatives in Georgia’s 10th Congressional District. To bolster his authority, he repeats quotes by revered figures from American history. One of his favorites has been a gem from the sixth U.S. President, John Quincy Adams: “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” The only problem is, those words were actually written by country singer Dolly Parton, not by Adams. Don’t get fooled by a comparable case of mistaken identity, Virgo. Be on the alert for unwarranted substitutions and problematic switcheroos. Be a staunch fact-checker. Insist on verification. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): “I am naughtiest of all,” wrote poet Emily Dickinson in a playful letter to

© Copyright 2012 Rob Brezsny

Maggie Maher, dated October 1882. In accordance with the astrological omens, I authorize you to let that same declaration fly frequently from your own lips in the coming week. Feel free to invoke other variations on the theme of naughtiness, as well: “I am exploring the frontiers of naughtiness,” for example, or “You need to be naughtier” (said to a person you’d like to get naughty with), or “Being naughty is my current spiritual practice.” SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “There’s a way not to be broken that takes brokenness to find it,” writes Naomi Shihab Nye in her poem “Cinco de Mayo.” I suspect this describes your situation right now. The bad news is that you are feeling a bit broken. The good news is that this is a special kind of brokenness -- a brokenness that contains a valuable secret you have never been ready to learn before now. Allow yourself to feel the full intensity of the brokenness, and you will discover a way to never be broken like this again. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): In a competitive game show on Japanese TV, 13 people had slabs of meat tied to their foreheads. They then poked their heads up from below, through holes in the floor of an elevated platform, where a hungry lizard was stalking around. But not one of the contestants stuck around when the lizard came to nibble the meat; they all ducked down out of their holes and fled to safety. That was probably wise, although it meant that the prize went unclaimed. Now I’m wondering, Sagittarius, about what might happen if a similar event were staged in your neighborhood. I suspect there’s a chance you would will yourself to stand calmly as the lizard feasted on the meat just inches from your eyes. As much as I admire that kind of poised courage, I want you to know that there are better ways to express it. Be on the lookout for noble challenges with goals that are truly worthy of you. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Director Michael Bay makes big, loud, fast, melodramatic action films, including Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, and the four Transformers movies. The critics hate him, but he’s unfazed. “I make movies for teenage boys,” he says. “Oh, dear, what a crime,” he adds sarcastically. I love that stance. He knows what he’s good at, and makes no apologies for doing it. I recommend that you cop some of that attitude right now. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): While walking in San Francisco, I passed the Pacific Heights Health Club. The sign out front said, “Birthday suits tailored here.” It was a witty reference to the idea that working out at a gym helps people get their naked bodies in good shape. I’d like to interpret the sign’s message in a different way, and apply it to you. The time is right for you to get back in touch with your raw, original self, and give it the care and the fuel and the treats it has been missing. Who did you start out to be? What does your soul’s blueprint say about who you must become? Home in on your source code and boost its signal. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Horror novelist Stephen King has sold more than 350 million books. But when he was young and destitute, still honing his craft, his self-confidence was low. His breakthrough work was Carrie, about a teenage girl who develops telekinetic powers. But when he was first writing that manuscript on his old manual typewriter, he got so discouraged that he threw his first draft in the trashcan. Luckily for him, his wife retrieved it and convinced him to keep plugging away. Eventually he finished, and later sold the paperback rights for $400,000. I hope you have an ally who will go digging in your garbage to fish out the good stuff you unwisely discard. Or maybe this horoscope will convince you not to scrap it in the first place. INSPIRATION

J

by Bronwyn Ison

ust Do It! This familiar phrase derives from NIKE. What inspires you? What drives you to venture into the world each and every day to strive? Besides the fact you have to pay the bills, something must motivate and be a catalyst for you each day. We all crave… INSPIRATION. We want it, we love it and we need to be inspired. Our society is full of talented people who have accomplished great things with their lives or skill set. Tony Robbins is a life coach, author and motivational speaker, influencing thousands upon thousands of people. Robbins became a master at influencing people and it enabled him to become a multi-millionaire. He did not attend college, was kicked out of his abusive home at 17 and worked as a repairman. Robbins had a choice as to which road he should take. Clearly he chose the path to success and became a millionaire at 24-years-old. This is quite inspirational. The list is lengthy when it comes to motivational people. Think of who and what inspires you? You may have a passion for your work. This may be enough to satisfy your palette for a while. As soon as you accomplished or mastered the task at hand you need a fresh challenge. It’s simply human nature and what keeps us striving. My profession keeps me in the forefront of influencing others daily. I often will say, “Do not be intimidated. Be inspired.” Let go of fear and lead with “Yes I can!” A personal friend and mentor of mine

suggested I make a roadmap. Creating an inspirational daily roadmap may allow you to uncover what truly compels you. Write down ideas, thoughts and feelings. Revisit your notes. Your ideas may change and then you may edit. Your ideas can never be too big or small. Stay focused! It is important to remain healthy. Drink plenty of water and eat healthy. Be sure to exercise. Rest! We live in a sleep deprived society. Sleep is essential. These ingredients are a prerequisite to your success. Plan your day appropriately. Rise early and get to business. Write down your three top tasks. Take a meditative moment and proceed. Plan your work and work your plan. Take short breaks throughout the day. End your day with a reflection. How did you fair? Keep your powerful mind active. Be sure to read, browse the Internet and brainstorm ideas alone with a friend, family member, or mentor. Focus on what makes you happy. Do not sacrifice your happiness. It is helpful for you to express gratitude daily. Each day I am thankful for my health and the health of my family. This can render us feeling comforted. “We must let go of the life we have planned, so as to accept the one that is waiting for us.” Joseph Campbell. Life & career Coach

Creating a Balanced Life

I

live on a small lake and share the surrounding beauty with a variety of water fowl. Yesterday I delighted in watching a black swan perched on a rock. He balanced on one leg while enjoying the soft current cascading over his webbed foot. A small white egret like bird stood less than two feet away as if in silent companionship. Both soaked in the sun’s rays practicing silence and taking pleasure in the serene setting. As I absorbed the simplicity of this tableau, it brought to mind the path to happiness. Balance in life yields peace and contentment. It’s the balance part we find so difficult to achieve. Many individuals continually fail at balancing career and home life, relationships and commitments, downtime and party central. Much of my coaching practice is devoted to helping clients create the magic formula to win the balancing act. Cracking the code on this dilemma is not as difficult as it seems. My “go to” strategies are simple and straight forward. For example, how does a young single woman study for her CPA exam while trying to cram in dating, stellar work performance, family obligations and quiet time? Sounds daunting, I know, especially to her. It is doable but requires organization and prioritization. If earning her CPA designation is a

32

priority, she must commit to it. Numerous hours must be devoted to study time. That means sacrifice of course. Date nights, happy hours with friends and shopping excursions with her sisters must be limited. She needs to make peace with the fact that a rigorous study schedule is temporary. Once the exam is passed she can resume the activities of choice, however, she cannot put those three letters behind her name without planning. The X in my equation equaling happiness is planning. To enjoy a balanced life plan your days, your nights and weekends. Wondering what composes the Y part of my equation? It involves our decision making process when others make demands on our time. If you love college football and want nothing more than to spend a few leisure hours watching the Saturday line-up, you must learn to say no to the friend who implores you to go golfing. Easier than is sounds? Yes. Standing on one leg may come naturally to our swan. Human beings require dedicated practice when it comes to planning and drawing boundaries. This week, keep working this equation: Planning + setting boundaries = a happy balanced life. Sunny Simon is the owner of Raise the Bar High Life and Career Coaching. What you need to know about ebola

V

iruses are again making national and even international headlines. Ebola virus is still a significant problem in Africa and the virus is still making its presence known in this country in Dallas, Texas, where Thomas Duncan is the first person to be diagnosed in the United States. I did a column on Ebola a few months ago and I would just like to again offer information on the virus to clear up misconceptions. What are the symptoms? Early symptoms include sudden onset of fever, weakness, muscle pain, headaches and a sore throat. These symptoms can appear two to 21 days after infection. Some patients may also develop a rash, red eyes, hiccups, chest pains, difficulty swallowing and difficulty breathing. The early symptoms progress to vomiting, diarrhea, impaired kidney and liver function and sometimes internal and external bleeding (from the eyes, ears and mouth) How is it spread? The Ebola virus is spread through direct contact with the blood or other body fluids of an infected person or through exposure to infected objects like needles. The virus is not airborne and can’t be spread by contaminated food or water. It is believed the virus is only transmissible when the infected person is symptomatic. Is it fatal? The fatality rate is up to 90%. How is it treated? There is no vaccine currently available and there is no specific treatment. Infected patients are treated symptomatically with supportive care, such as; IV hydration, maintaining blood pressure and treatment for any complicating infections. Enterovirus D68 has also been in the news. What exactly is this virus? This is a virus that was discovered in California in 1962

and has symptoms similar to the common cold. The virus is newsworthy because it generally only occurred in small clusters of the population, but this current outbreak is widespread. As of the writing of this article, the virus has been confirmed in more than 590 cases in 43 states. All of the cases have been in children except for one adult. Most individuals infected with the virus will suffer from the mild symptoms of fever, cough and runny nose and a majority will recover with fluids, rest and symptomatic treatment. The children who have been hit the hardest and may suffer the more severe difficulties of wheezing and difficulty breathing are the patients with a history of asthma. There have been reported cases of unexplained paralysis associated with Enterovirus D68, but as of the writing of this article, the Center of Disease Control testing has not found a direct link. The incidences of paralysis are extremely rare and may just be coincidental. Unlike the common cold (rhinovirus), enterovirus can survive in stomach acid and infect the gut. Enterovirus can survive on surfaces for hours and maybe even a day. It can be found in saliva, nasal mucus or sputum. Most people will catch the virus by touching a contaminated surface and then rubbing your nose or eyes. You can also get it from close person to person contact. School has started and the season is upon us, don’t forget to wash your hands!
