I

t’s that special creepy time of year when thoughts of witches, vampires and ghosts fill the imagination and ghouls come out to play. And if you live in the Coachella Valley, it’s also when the most anticipated party of the year takes place, BB Ingle’s Annual Halloween Bash! BB’s parties are legendary, and have been entertaining desert party goers for decades. His Halloween parties in particular are enormously popular, giving attendees the chance to shed their everyday persona and dress up as whatever they want to for a night of decadent freaky fun. His parties are epic, and bring people from not only the desert area, but all over southern California to attend. Last year’s event, held at the Hard Rock hotel was enormous, bringing out well over 3,000 people to play. The costumes ranged from the demur, to over the top, with even a full-fledged Genie cruising around on his very own magic carpet willing to take pictures with anyone that would ask. You can probably find just about any costume at BB’s party; it is a coveted event that people look forward to, an event that stimulates all the senses. BB must have been born to bring people together, starting his career as a leader in social gatherings back in the 80’s when he and a few others founded BB O’Briens. The night spot was a constant in desert nightlife, and after its closure, BB began throwing special holiday/event parties earning him the Master of Events and Godfather of parties title that he has today. BB is also the 2 time winner of CV Weekly’s “Promoter of the Year” Award. This year BB’s 30th Annual Halloween bash, on Halloween night, Friday October

31st, will be held again at the Hard Rock Hotel in downtown Palm Springs. The Hard Rock Hotel Palm Springs boasts all of the flash and glamour affiliated with the famous chain. Amenities at the venue include swanky lounges (lobby & poolside), incredible dining, spa services and hip luxury accommodations all dripping with the cool vibe that is part of the Hard Rock brand. The Hard Rock Hotel, which started back in 1971, sets its goals on bringing people together to party up a storm, it’s a shared goal that BB has been an advocate of all along, “I’m excited to have my big bash at the Hard Rock again this year!” said BB. The Hard Rock Hotel Palm Springs and BB’s 30th Annual Halloween Bash is a perfect match! The mega party, which is being produced by Ray Phillips and RSP Productions, will be spread out around the hotel, incorporating the elaborate underground ballroom, and poolside area. Three floors and six rooms of entertainment include heart pumping music from DJ’s: Ray Phillips, Anwaar Hines, Aaron C, Ceasare, JF//Discord, Tommy O’Connor plus others. The band Caxton, winner of CV Weekly’s “Best Band 2014” Award, will be performing as well. The party will also

feature a live rock music show performed poolside by Live It Up Productions (Monster Rock Stage Show), food will be available through hotel outlets and there will be plenty of bars to accommodate thirsty hell raisers. The party goes from 8pm to 2am and guests must be 21 or older to enter. Tickets are priced at $20 per person in advance for general admission online at PartywithBB. com. Tickets will also be available at the door. Halloween has long been a holiday for kids to dress up, knock on stranger’s doors and extort candy (give me a treat or else). But the holiday has evolved into a much needed adult break from reality as well. It’s a night of fantasy, scares, dares, tricks and treats. And for us living in the desert, we have been lucky to have the “Pied Piper” of parties in our midst to throw exciting, edgy Halloween events every year. With BB’s 30th Annual Halloween Bash at the Hard Rock Hotel in Palm Springs, it is certain that there will be plenty of treats for us all….and maybe a scary trick or two. Happy Halloween! Save a Horse, Buy a Cowboy

S

ave a horse, buy a cowboy. Yes, you read that right. What was once only a sassy bumper sticker or T-shirt, is now a reality. There will be a LIVE COWBOY AUCTION: Cowboy bachelors will be auctioned off, one by strapping one, to the highest bidder. The best part about it is you can purchase your cowboy guilt free, since every penny will go to the rescue and care of horses once deemed “unusable” who now serve a beautiful purpose. Now, if you’re anything like me, my naughty friends, I know exactly what you’re thinking! You’re thinking to yourself, “What about food? Will there be barbecue?” Rest assured the answer is yes, and not just any barbecue! Award winning, Cowboy Way Bar-B-Que, will be catering the event with their smoky, delicious goodness. As if these weren’t reason enough to drop everything and support this worthwhile cause, you’ll also be treated to award winning country music by R Buckle Road, playing in front of a barn style dance floor, complete with line dancing instruction. There will be a silent auction for some incredible items, vendor booths, cowboy games, a petting zoo, and even hay bale rides. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the incredible rescue horses that are up for adoption. I asked Annette Garcia, rescue director of CV Horse Rescue, how many

horses currently live and work on the property and quickly came in contact with her huge heart for this organization and magnificent creatures cared for there. “We had 18 horses...” Her voice trailed off as her valiant attempt to stifle her tears failed her. “We had 18 horses, but we lost Storm,” she shared as she struggled to continue. “She had a special place in my heart, so I sponsored her myself for two years. Storm had come to the rescue wild and pregnant. You couldn’t go near her; she wouldn’t pick up her feet. Any farrier would tell you that Storm turned out to be one of the best horses on the property.” Garcia explained, “Storm just finally let me know that she was in a lot of pain and that it was time to let her go.” The organization’s website www. cvhorserescue.org, has a touching and fitting

tribute to Storm, produced by two of the girls, Gracie and Katelin, that visit and help with duties at the rescue property. They told what they knew of Storm’s story against the back drop of beautiful pictures of the majestic, grey, Arab and Quarter mix mare. As music plays, these words scroll: She had a 10% chance of living. No one could touch her. No one knew her story. No one knew her pain. No one knew her suffering. She overcame her fears. She started to trust. She may never be ridden and that’s ok. She was and is a survivor. She is a rescue horse in her forever home. It suddenly became very clear to me, as I watched, why these horses, this rescue organization and these people are so effective as part of a therapy program for troubled youth and adults much like myself. These horses, these people, are just like us - fighting to find strength and beauty in broken places. And here, they succeed together beautifully. CV Horse Rescue is in serious need of support. We live in an area with many charities working hard for the same donor dollars. Here, we have an organization that not only allows these throw-away animals to thrive through their use of donations,

amilies and friends, visitors and residents alike, come on out to the desert’s most popular shopping district, El Paseo, for another beautiful Palm Desert day as we watch history come to life before our eyes, the 50th annual Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade Sunday, October 26. “This year is the biggest to date,” said Mike Hardin, owner of the Lock Shop and Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade Chairman for the fourth year in a row. “This is a historic year for the parade, and we value the support from the City of Palm Desert, the Palm Desert Chamber of Commerce as

but also gives back to its community. This completely all volunteer operated, non-profit organization, links people and rescued animals together, resulting in restorative, healing relationships. Among their many services, CV Horse Rescue provides scholarships for horse camps, and horsemanship clinics. They also partner with organizations such as 4-H, the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, helping them develop horsemanship, leadership, and an understanding of the importance of giving back to the community. If animals have a special place in your heart, this event is the perfect opportunity for you to take a close look at the organization you could take great pleasure in supporting. Bring the family and meet the 17 horses remaining on the property, the two goats, one dog, and the mini horses, each with their own story and purpose. The event is set for November 1, starting at 5:00p.m. CV Horse Rescue is located 2 miles north of the I-10 Freeway, ¼ mile east of Granite Construction. Tickets are a $40.00 tax deductible donation in advance and $50.00 at the door. Children under 18 get in for free. Randy Houston from K Palm radio will be the DJ alongside of Coachella Valley Music Award’s “Best Country Band 2014”. I strongly encourage you to visit their website for more detailed information on this valuable organization and the event details. You can find them at www.cvhorserescue.org or call (760) 808-6279. Tickets are on sale now.

Title Sponsors and the Auen Foundation as Presenting Sponsor. This is the community’s golden anniversary parade!” To celebrate 50 years of this desert tradition, many all-day festivities are planned including a Palm Desert Rotary Pancake Breakfast at 8am, an interactive Kid’s play Zone on Larkspur, a Cart Show, Food Vendors, Golf Booths and more! Parade organizers and fans, alike, were thrilled with the announcement that members of the movie-star famous USC Trojan Marching Band and Traveler will entertain thousands of parade-goers along

the El Paseo corridor as well. “This is set to be the best Golf Cart Parade yet,” said Hardin. “The local Trojan Club of the Desert, with many USC alumni and supporters, rallied to bring part of the ‘Spirit of Troy’ here for this momentous occasion. We can’t thank the club enough, especially the major sponsors: Jerry and Anne Linehan; Dick Shaloub; Helene Galen; Plaza Dental Group – La Quinta; and Paul Salata from Orange County.” The fitting theme: “Palm Desert on Parade - Through the Decades: 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s & Today” will chronicle where the city and parade have come over the last

50 years. More than 100 local businesses, nonprofits, schools and associations are starting their float designs in preparation for the big reveal, when scores of entries will head down famous El Paseo. “There truly is something for everyone at the event! We invite the entire Coachella Valley to come on out for a great day,” said Hardin. The Palm Desert Golf Cart Parade steps off at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2014. AMFM FEST TO FEATURE AIRBRUSH ARTIST GRANT KOSH SCHMIDY’S SETS THE STAGE FOR AMFM FEST CLOSING NIGHT

A

MFM FEST: art, music, film and more sponsored by Cathedral City Nov. 13-16th will feature Santa Fe artist Grant Kosh. I spoke with Grant about his work, his aspirations and how he started creating art. CV WEEKLY: How did you start doing art? Grant Kosh: It all started in school. Our teacher would draw on the board and we would copy it. I’d go home and draw pictures from magazines and try to copy what I saw. When I was 13, my mom brought home a magazine on airbrushing. I ended up taking a couple classes in Orange County and Jurek Zamoyski was there teaching. He’s the one who painted a lot of Bob Marley T-shirts. Then I put it down in high school. I was more into sports and theatre but I kept drawing. CVW: When did you pick up art again? Grant Kosh: In college at UH (University of Hawaii), I started painting more Bob Marley’s for friends. It was just for fun. CVW: When did you decide to get serious about art? Grant Kosh: 2006-2007, I was graduating from College of Santa Fe. I wanted to work in film and couldn’t get in. So, I started doing my art. CVW: How do you start your paintings? Grant Kosh: The references I chose are not the average tabloid weekly or very polished. I like wrinkles, emotion and dramatic lighting. I like something off the mainstream smile. More raw and rough detailed. I used to print out photos and whatever the resolution was I went with it. Now with technology, I am looking at finite detail. I start with a photo and put the bones on canvas and then I make it more of my own really looking at the emotion in the picture. CVW: Your latest work, the Hunter S. Thompson piece seems to reflect this. Grant Kosh: It was a commission piece. When my client finally settled on the image, I knew he’d appreciate the detail. It is on Masonite board rather than canvas. It’s like

A

automotive painting, It helps a lot to have smooth surfaces. CVW: What do you want people to take away from your work? Grant Kosh: I want people to be surprised. The other day I was painting a mural of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This guy came by and wanted to get closer to it and then dropped down to his knees. He started praying! I always wanted to help people with my art and never knew how it would manifest. CVW: What is life like as an artist? Grant Kosh: I’m always going to be an artist. It’s a great life. I’m not looking to get rich just enjoy my passion. CVW: Thanks, Grant. Grant Kosh: No, thank you! This is great. I really appreciate it. Grant Kosh’s art will be exhibited at the Mary Pickford Theatre Nov. 13-16th during AMFM Fest. For more information on Grant, please go to www.GrantKoshArt.com or www.facebook.com/AMFMfest

MFM Fest: art, music, film and more sponsored by Cathedral City will close this year’s festivities with a Wrap Party at Schmidy’s Tavern in Palm Desert. The bands are set and ready to take the stage. This year’s line up will feature local stand outs Burning Bettie and CIVX with the closing act featuring a return from last year’s festival, Tramps in Stereo lead by Coachella Valley tied rocker Jesse Vasquez. Schmidy’s Tavern will run the beer garden during the Festival of Art, Music, Film and More on Friday and Saturday night November 14-15th featuring a great quality selection of beer the Tavern has developed a reputation for in the area. “We are thrilled to have Schmidy’s Tavern on board for AMFM Fest this year. They share a common vision for community, like we do, and we couldn’t be happier to partner with them,” says Festival Director Stephanie Bell. In addition to the beer garden, Schmidy’s will host the official wrap party for the festival. Giorg Tierez, tattooed and bearded, the inconspicuous front man for Burning Bettie, will bring a healthy dose of charm mixed with melody and music to bring the AMFM Fest to a close. The band, formed through Craig’s List, represents the spirit of the festival well, as a group of talented musicians all seeking to find a perfect mix of synergy to create music and lyrics from the heart. While their genre may be listed as rock, they have a unique take on rock music that comes out in refreshing new ways. Their music plays of the past with reminiscent riffs of Buddy Holly and The Beatles through classic hard rock and surf and punk rock and into rockabilly licks that fade into 80’s and 90’s indie, rock and metal. The melding of sound is a treat to the music lover and something to discover. Cathedral City locals CIVX, formed in early 2014 consists of Nick Hernandez on Vocals and Bass, Dillion Dominguez on Guitar, Sal Gutierrez strumming the strings and Joel Guerrero banging the drums. All members came together after stints with various other projects. Three of the members played at last year’s AMFM Fest with the PSSSTOLS. The band has quickly taken the world by storm, landing on the stage at Coachella, with their intricate style,

texture and sonic noise that recalls a sound like Interpol but delves beyond. CIVX’s blend of punk and post-punk rhythms recently attracted the attention of chart-climbers Fitz and the Tantrums, a band they opened for this year. This band definitely represents the homegrown talent in Cathedral City and the Coachella Valley. Palm Springs resident and front man, Jesse Vasquez of Tramps in Stereo, brings in the sounds of electro pop, analog synth and guitar bits mixed with 60’s mod, return to the AMFM Fest stage for a closing night performance. Their latest single “Searching for a Paradise,” is getting some air play and the band is definitely picking up momentum. Tramps in Stereo have produced an album with heartfelt lyrics, catchy melodies and beats that move the body. The music that comes from this band calls in the sounds of Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, The Smiths and David Bowie. This year’s AMFM Fest will kick-off on Thursday Nov. 13th at the UltraStar Mary Pickford Theatre with a play by Ed Asner and Mark Rydell, who directed The Cowboys with John Wayne and On Golden Pond. The festival will run through November 16th and will feature art in the Pickford mezzanine, music on Friday and Saturday night in the Town Square and plenty of films and panels inside the theatre. The event will host several celebrities such as Robert Loggia (Scarface, Lost Highway, The Family Guy) and BooBoo Stewart (Twilight, X-Men: Days

of Future Past) with their film An Evergreen Christmas screening on Friday night, Nov. 14th. The festival will benefit an arts-based scholarship fund for Coachella Valley students wishing to pursue arts education. VIP Passes now on sale at the Mary Pickford box office. Individual tickets will go on sale Nov. 1st and will be available for purchase through the Pickford box office. More announcements to come so stay tuned to www.facebook.com/AMFMfest and to Coachella Valley Weekly for continuous coverage of the event.

Kelly Derrickson K

elly Derrickson is unequivocally a country music artist. She recently reached #20 on the European iTunes charts ahead of Blake Shelton and George Strait. Her first album Warriors of Love, released in the summer of 2013, has garnered a lot of attention around the world. “Warriors of Love was so organic and came from my heart and soul. It’s about the earth and protecting the animals,” said Derrickson. She was recently in the city of Winnipeg, Canada attending the Aboriginal People’s Choice Music Awards (APCMA) where she was nominated for Best Country Album. There were over 25,000 music fans in attendance. “It was a huge honor to be included. I was blown away by the talent and the people. They were so welcoming. I didn’t bring the award home but it was a cool experience for my first album and first time nominated. I got to connect with so many incredible artists and make lifelong friends. You become brothers and sisters. I was asked to perform next year.” Derrickson now calls the Coachella Valley her home along with the “love of her life” and manager Robert Cooper as well as their family companion Lady Dogga. In acclimating to the desert life Derrickson has not wasted any time in continuing her passion for music and supporting social causes. Derrickson is a social dynamo when it comes to her Native culture and addressing the dangers of texting while driving. Derrickson was raised in Canada and is a member of the First Nations. She attended the Victoria Conservatory of Music in British Columbia and the Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, where she completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Professional Music and Music Business. Her father, Grand Chief Ron Derrickson, served six terms as Chief

and helped initiate the “Idle No More” movement which brings attention to the unfair treatment of Native people and their land rights by governments worldwide. These different roles that Derrickson plays is a common theme with her. “For me one didn’t come without the other. “Idol No More” is the last song on the album. It’s about peaceful revolution and honoring our indigenous sovereignty. These causes are really important to me. There’s the country in me, then there’s a little bit of the rock, which is this duality in me and there’s part of me that’s rebellious in nature. Let’s kick the door down and start a revolution but in the most peaceful loving manner possible. I really want to make a difference with all these things. Native people are very nonviolent people. We’re very peaceful people and we’re strong,” said Derrickson. That strength has also led Derrickson and her friend Jimi ‘Fitz’ Fitzgerald to conceive Stash It B4U Crash It, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, which aims to go beyond awareness of texting while driving. According to Derrickson, “It takes action where needed and goes about making lives that have been devastated by this irresponsible behavior better. I never thought there was a way I could help to alleviate it. Then, it was suggested that through my music I might be able to help. I ended up writing and recording the song LOL (Laughing Out Loud), a painful song that addresses the loss of a loved one as a result of texting while driving. I wrote it from the mother’s perspective. I wrote it for Dena Allen, mother of Tyler Allen who was severely injured when he was a passenger in an automobile accident in which the driver of the vehicle was texting. That driver was Tyler’s friend Michael Stillman who was killed in the accident.” This tragedy has galvanized Derrickson to do more about it. “The idea was always that I would donate a certain percentage of the proceeds that I received from the sales of the song to specific charities. But when it comes to texting while driving, most charities are about awareness and we all know that awareness campaigns are limited despite their good intentions, so I decided to form Stash It B4 U Crash It, an organization with a different agenda.” The primary intent of the organization is to create a professional network of volunteers with specific skill sets that are applicable in all phases of the post-accident recovery process. Areas that include, but are not limited to; legal, medical, financial, insurance, physical therapy, family counseling, transportation, caregivers, etc. Robert Cooper, Derrickson’s manager, is also championing the fight. “Families affected by this are faced with a barrage of problems. This will be similar to Angie’s List where anything related will be available. Anything that you can do to help, speech therapist, trainer, whatever, then

October 23 to October 29, 2014

people can log on and list their services. This will enable us to do something that carries forward to help those directly affected and help their families receive the help and care that they need.” Derrickson, Cooper and Christopher Raphael, Derrickson’s agent and Director of Communications for Stash It B4 U Crash It, are planning to facilitate events that will raise funding to continue the mission to provide resources for affected families. They plan to work with local auto dealerships in devising yearly concerts with various artists performing. Derrickson also plans to provide CDs of her music to customers. In addition, Cooper is developing a reality show entitled “Ballroom Bootcamp” with Sharna Burgess, professional dancer from “Dancing With The Stars”, with all proceeds going to Stash It B4 U Crash It. These notable connections and events will without a doubt help sustain this organization. In continuing to network, Derrickson has also connected with some of the best musicians the valley has to offer. Her band members include Bobby Furgo on fiddle and keyboards, “He’s our team captain.” Martin Barrera on guitar, “Martin is an acoustic guitar phenomenon! He’s fantastic and I love him. He’s all heart and soul. He’s my backbone when I play with him.” Keith Oderbach on bass guitar and Patrick Mitchem on drums. Genevieve King provides background vocals, “She is fabulous and a great singer. She’s got the chops to back it up.” When his schedule permits Ronnie King will step in and perform keyboards. “Ronnie was essential in developing some of the songs before they went to Nashville. He’s a good friend and he and Lisa are like family.” Another popular valley pillar in Derrickson’s corner is Jimi ‘Fitz’ Fitzgerald. “Fitz and his wife Wendy have been huge supporters as well. He has used his platform and radio show to promote my music.” Her music is rooted in country and standards. On the flip side, you can also hear the downright rock music influence. “I listened to bluegrass, John Coltrane, Ella Fitzgerald and started with opera training. I also listened to Metallica growing up and

AC/DC was another favorite. My brother had me so brainwashed with heavy metal there was no way I could escape it.” The country and rock come together on Warriors of Love triumphantly. Derrickson continued to share her joy when she was asked to perform two of her songs at the ‘Music Friends - Believing for Desi’ event held in August at Schmidy’s Tavern in Palm Desert. It’s this devotion to service that sets her apart, “I love to help with positive action.” She has expressed interest in involving herself more with her Native brothers and sisters in our local tribes as well. “I’ve had nothing but positive experiences in the pow wows here. I would like to do a lot more work in the community with them. We’re ready to reach out.” Along with extending her support of Coachella Valley tribes, Derrickson has several projects in the works. She is currently working on another album and is awaiting the release of her video for the song “Warriors of Love” filmed in Hawaii and featuring the Maui Barefoot Ninjas. Cooper is currently developing a reality show based on these cliff diving and helicopter jumping thrill seekers. Derrickson showed me some raw footage that reveals them performing the traditional Hawaiian warrior dance which parallels the title of the song. As a warrior, Derrickson specializes in fighting the battle for love. Thank you for sharing your spirit with us. Welcome to the Coachella Valley. I will leave you with a quote from Derrickson that, for me, encompasses her life’s philosophy, “When you sing from your heart and soul someone is going to listen to what you’re saying.” Learn more about Kelly and her causes below. You can find her album Warriors of Love on iTunes. kellyderrickson.com facebook / youtube / twitter / Instagram stashitb4ucrashit.org www.idlenomore.ca

This has been a hard won battle and you are so very deserving of all your success!

t would seem the gods of opportunity and favor are shining down on one of our desert’s own rock and roll sons, Nick Oliveri. The world renowned artist who grew up right here on our own desert soil, is perhaps known as much for his epic collaborations with some of today’s rock and roll legends in the making, as he is for his self-destructive behaviors that nearly resulted in him losing it all. “I’m not in denial,” he shared with me. “I felt like a loser, the guy who had everything and lost everything. I lost that because of my screw ups. I admit it.” This kind of brutal and fearless, face off with the truth could be the reason that Nick Oliveri is currently standing on the precipice of career redemption and restoration, not to mention some of his best music to date. Today, October 21st, as I type, Oliveri is in route to a rehearsal in Los Angeles with his estranged band, Queens of the Stone Age, in preparation for a one time reunion. Last night, Oliveri shared with me over text, “Rehearsals tomorrow! Nervous. Good nerves!” Oliveri’s profoundly humble attitude is reflected in his powerful new music, most significantly in his song “Robot Man”. The song on his soon to be released, sophomore solo album, Nick Oliveri’s Uncontrollable - Leave Me Alone, is about his 2011 arrest following a confrontation with a S.W.A.T. team. “I wrote that song for them (his arresting S.W.A.T. team) and I want them to hear it. They were all very nice to me, in that situation, and were actually worried about my well-being. They didn’t have to be.” The epic reunion, ten years in the making, will take place at the sold out Forum in Los Angeles, October 31st. Oliveri’s band, Uncontrollable, will open along with The Kills and JD McPherson. The hand-picked players Nick has chosen to join him include two local desert musicians: Drummer, Jeff Bowman (Unsound, The Agents, Mighty Jack), and guitar phenom, Mike Pygmie (You Know Who, Waxy, The Agents, The Whizards, featured guitarist on Oliveri’s album). When asked if this was the biggest show of their lifetime, drummer Jeff Bowman answered, “Yes, for sure. This is my and Mike’s biggest show ever, and Nick’s biggest show in many years. On the scale of epic, it’s a 9...10 would be actually headlining the show!” Guitarist, Stephen Hass from Austin, Texas will fly in this week. He’s been writing and playing music with Jeff Pinkus (Honky, Butthole Surfers, Melvins) and playing in the country/rock band Pure Luck. He and Guy Heller (aka Dickey Moist)

started writing music together. Haas shared, “I would play Mickey Moist’s parts for Moistboyz Travis County shows, and that’s when me and Nick met, about 6-7 years ago. He used to fly in for SXSW, and we’d do about 5-7 shows together a year doing Moistboyz music. I’m so stoked to be playing with my bro Nick!” This Saturday, October 25th, the full band of Uncontrollable will be making their first ever, public debut, performing for their hometown audience at The Hood Bar and Pizza. Per drummer, Jeff Bowman, “We will be performing QOTSA songs so Nick can ‘practice’ for his encore reunion set with Queens, and we’re going to close our own set at the Forum with Kyuss’ “Green Machine”, which should go off!” Opening acts Waxy, just coming off their Australian tour with John Garcia, and Big Pig, the new, promising project of Dino Lalli, son of desert rock godfather, Mario Lalli, will set the stage perfectly. This show is history in the making, and for any professed lover of desert rock, this is one show that cannot be missed. As Jack Kohler, member of Waxy and the one making this show happen at The Hood says, “We love these kinds of shows, because it’s a full night of showcasing desert rock at our hometown stadium.” Experience this monstrous collection of live local talent dead set and on track to become an international collective treasure for only $5 at the door. Doors open at 8 pm. This show is 21 and over only. Reba McEntire LIVE! At Fantasy Springs Resort Casino A Surprise Announcement, A Formula For Success and Words of Wisdom from One of the Most Accomplished Entertainers of our Time

I

t became very apparent to me, that the name “Reba McEntire” sends ripples across genre, gender and age barriers. There may be a few Amish families who will look at you quizzically at the mention of her name, and chances are, one of them is fibbing. When I posted on Facebook that I was going to be given the opportunity to interview Reba, I was swarmed with responses both public and private, all stirring with excitement. Some of my heavy desert rock buddies chimed in, my 22 year old son responded with “Way to go Mom!”, and I believe I was even un-friended and blocked out of shear jealousy by an ex-”let’s just be friends”-boyfriend. It was a good day. Reba McEntire is, hands down, one of the most successful female recording artists in history. She has sold over 56 million albums worldwide, is a member of both the Hollywood Bowl and the Country Music Halls of Fame, has won 15 American Music Awards, 13 ACM Awards, 9 People’s Choice Awards, 7 CMA Awards, 2 GRAMMY Awards, an ACM Career Achievement Honor, and (take a breath) she is one of only four entertainers in history to receive the National Artistic Achievement Award from the U.S. Congress. Her reign of #1 hits spans over 40 years of Billboard charts, and she is recognized as the biggest female hitmaker in Country music history. She earned her 64th Top 10 hit and her 35th #1 with “Turn On The Radio,” from her most recent album, ALL THE WOMEN I AM, and has sold over 9 million concert tickets in her career. Then there’s her acting career: The Oklahoma native has 11 movie credits to her name, including Tremors, North & The Little Rascals. She made her Broadway debut in Irving Berlin’s Annie Get Your Gun which the New York Times hailed, “without

qualification, the best performance by an actress in a musical comedy this season.” She has also starred in one of America’s favorite sitcoms, Reba, which ran for 6 seasons. She even had her own personal exhibit featured at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville. The woman is a success machine. But to this writer, she represented something far more personal. Reba was one of my strongest influences and in a way, taught me how to sing. I spent a lot of time determined to match Reba’s tone, pitch and range as I sang from her, For My Broken Heart album. The title matched my state of heart at the time, and songs like “The Greatest Man I Never Knew” were like therapy as I ventured into one of the toughest seasons of my adult life. While other women were working out to their “Buns of Steel” videos, I was working my vocal chords, taking special note of the way she could virtually reach into your chest cavity and squeeze your heart with the stories she sang. The idea of singing and moving people in such a powerful way was a lofty dream at the time. 20 years of singing professionally later, I’d say she had a bit of an impact. That being said, I’m sure you can imagine, with spot on accuracy, the gushing I opened up with as I stumbled over and submitted my list of questions. CVW: With so much success behind you, you must have developed some formula, attitude, principle or discipline that helps you reach for and achieve greatness, time and time again. What is it? Reba: Thank you very much for those kind words! I have a very strong and consistent work ethic instilled in me by both my parents. I’m very focused when it comes to my career. Whether it’s finding songs to record, learning songs for the next tour, watching what I eat, drink, getting plenty of sleep to keep my health in its best shape, or exercising, I take it very seriously. I know the fans can spend their money on other artist’s CD’s and stage

shows. I never want them to go away feeling cheated when they buy my CD and concert ticket. I’m very blessed to get to do what I do. Always keeping that in mind, keeps me in a great attitude. God has been very good to me and has given me a talent I never take for granted.” CVW: This industry has changed drastically over the years. What advice do you have for artists dreaming of a career in country music today? Reba: Wow! Things have changed so much since I first got into the business, but the thing that hasn’t changed is this: we have so many big hearted people in our industry that I absolutely love! My best advice is hang with the good folks and stay away from the bad. You’ll know them when you see them. Go with your gut instinct! Work hard, pay attention. Listen more, talk less. Have confidence but be humble. Consummate professional that she is, the fastidiously classy lady of country royalty, known to be fairly verbal early in her career as a neo-traditional country artist, declined to answer my question regarding pop influences in today’s country music, and the controversy over what has been dubbed “Bro-country”, a general term for styles of country music taking influence from 21st-century hip hop, rock. She also took a pass on my question regarding the struggles of being a woman rising to the top in a male dominated industry. Both were later indirectly addressed in a “surprise announcement” that broke following a Facebook post that caused quite a stir with her fans. Reba, who has recently and increasingly begun turning to social media to reach out directly to her fans, posted a teaser via video post on Facebook: “Hey, we’ve got a little surprise for ya...a little surprise announcement Oct. 21. Stay tuned right here for more details.” Speculation ran rampant among her Facebook followers, with the majority apparently hoping that

she was either going to announce a new album or the return of her sitcom, Reba. Other fans have speculated that the iconic singer may be gearing up for a tour, or that she will announce the impending birth of a grandchild. Reba McEntire, now 59 and still making history, announced Tuesday morning (October 21st) on Blair Garner’s “America’s Morning Show”, that she is going to be the first artist signed to Nash Icon Music, a joint venture between Big Machine Label Group (Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw, Glen Campbell, Florida Georgia Line, to name a few) and Cumulus Media (the second largest owner and operator of AM and FM radio stations in the US). The merge of the two corporate giants is an endeavor that reportedly looks to put once high flying and still commercially relevant mature talent back on the airwaves, and back to a position of prominence in the mainstream. McEntire has already cut 11 tracks for the new project, working with producers Tony Brown and James Stroud. “I’ve got three more to record,” she shared with a note of excitement. “I’m always trying to beat out what I have already, so we just keep looking.” The move is not actually that much of a surprise, since Reba has worked with Scott Borchetta and the Big Machine Label Group in the past under the Valory Music imprint. Reba’s last two albums, Keep On Loving You and All The Women I Am were released under the Starstruck/Valory label, and Reba also appeared on a compilation released by Big Machine recently. Borchetta stated that he had been trying to talk Reba back into the studio for three years. Following the big announcement, Reba told Country Weekly, “I’m very pleased to be the first artist signed to Nash Icon. I think it’s a huge honor that they selected me and asked me to be a part of it. I always like that part ‘cause with the folks I get to work with and help me find the songs and get in and record with the musicians, after the songwriters have done such a great job, now it’s my turn to get out there and do what I love to do.” With hopes that this new partnership will allow her fans to hear her new music on the radio, Reba shared, “It’s been kind of a weird time in country music for females, I would say, and it’s in a trend now that I’m hoping is going to be more female friendly, for personal reasons.” Again, taking to social media, Reba tweeted, “It’s official - the #NashIcon contract is signed! I can’t wait to get this new music out in the world!” Saturday, November 1st, Fantasy Springs Resort and Casino in Indio will be her first concert following her big announcement. Tickets are available at www. fantasyspringsresort.com or call (800) 8272946. The box office will be open until 9pm that night.

ack in 2005 it seemed as though Sia burst on the scene with “Breathe Me.” The song was featured in the last minutes of the finale of the television series, “Six Feet Under.” A haunting piano ballad, the lyrics limned the ache of loneliness and isolation, as the music accelerated toward a stunning crescendo. It perfectly complimented the most satisfying series finale ever. (Sorry, “Breaking Bad”). In reality, Sia had been around for years. Born in 1975, in Adelaide, Australia, she grew up in a musical family. Both her parents cycled through a series of bands. Colin Hay, from Men At Work, was affectionately known as Uncle Colin because her dad had recorded and toured with the band in the late ‘80s. By the early ‘90s, a teenage Sia was active in Adelaide’s vibrant Acid Jazz scene. She joined the band Crisp as lead vocalist. They recorded two albums in 1996 and 1997. Sia tentatively began a solo career with her self-released Only See album. Just as the album was gaining momentum, tragedy struck when Sia’s boyfriend was killed in a traffic accident in London. Sia began selfmedicating, (“we got shit-faced on drugs”).

It was a bender that would last six years. Sia continued to pursue a solo career, releasing her sophomore effort, Healing Is Difficult in 2001. But she really began to gain recognition as a featured vocalist for the airy Electronica duo, Zero 7. On their debut, Simple Things, Sia’s soulful, Jazz inflected vocals, (kind of a precursor to Amy Winehouse and Adele), anchored the duo’s spacious melodies. She emerged as the voice of Zero 7. Her fourth album, Colour The Small One was released in 2004 and featured “Breathe Me.” When “Six Feet Under” supervisor Gary Calamar used the song to devastating effect in the series finale, the album began to gain traction. It was re-released through the Astralwerks label and shot up the charts. Finally, Sia’s commercial fortunes had caught up with her prodigious talents. That streak continued with her 2008 effort, Some People Have Real Problems, a sharp blend of her quirky songs and her singular phrasing. Produced by Greg Kurstin (The Bird And The Bee, Lily Allen, Foster The People and The Shins), it debuted at #26 on the Billboard charts. Kurstin was again behind the boards for her 2010 follow-up, We Are Born. A frothy onfection, propelled by dance beats, it was still shot through with Sia’s trademark melancholia. Suddenly, she became a sought after collaborator: Writing or co-writing music for Christina Aguilara, Eminem, David Guetta, Flo-Rida, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, Kesha, Rihanna, Beyonce and Maroon 5. Unfortunately, she also cancelled tour commitments having recently been diagnosed with Graves’ disease. The pressures of fame, coupled with her diagnosis, plunged Sia back into addiction. Following a suicide attempt, she entered rehab. Wary of the spotlight, she continued to work behind the scenes. Ironically, she had her biggest smash last year when Rihanna recorded her song, “Diamonds,” which

Consider This

peaked at #1 on the charts. Reuniting with Greg Kurstin, she began work on her new album. She negotiated a unique deal with RCA, stipulating she wouldn’t have to do any press or tour to promote her album. She actually appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres show with her back to the audience. Unfortunately, the resulting album, 1000 Forms Of Fear is abysmal. The opening track, “Chandelier,” is the first single. A ponderous party anthem that bears a fleeting resemblance to Nelly Furtado’s more assured “I’m Like A Bird.” Both “Big Girls Cry” and “Eye Of The Needle” are facile attempts at introspection. The former offers up this earth-shattering nugget, “Big girls cry when their hearts are breaking.” The latter is slow and lugubrious. A little bit of Sia’s idiosyncratic vocal style breaks through, but it’s not enough to save

this vapid song. Ironically, both songs feel “montage” ready. As though they could score a pivotal scene in “Gossip Girl,” (is that still on TV?), or “Jane The Virgin.” These songs all feel as though they were written for other people. The lyrics most tread the same tedious territory; basically, “I love you but you’re a dick.” The melody of “Fair Game” is slightly interesting. Powered by piano, mellotron and xylophone, but the vocals are too busy and the song is far too long, straining the listener’s good will. “Elastic Man” is a synthesized pep talk that shares musical DNA with the “Pac Man” song. The worst song here has to be “Free The Animal.” Over a kinetic pulse, Sia offers up this mixed message of defiance. “Detonate me, shoot me like a cannonball, granulate me, kill me like an animal/ Decapitate me, hit me like a baseball.” Worst of all, there’s an extended auto-tune segment. A couple songs begin promisingly before they completely disappoint. “Burn The Pages” feels like a lost Flock Of Seagulls song, buoyed by click track percussion. But lyrics like “You’re twisted up like a slipknot, tied to a juice-head who just took his t-shot,” are too weirdly specific to resonate. Plus, Sia’s vocal gymnastics are irksome. “Hostage” also mines an ‘80s groove. Slinky guitars compliment a kick drum beat. But the bouncy melody belies the lyrical themes of sado-masochism, bondage and (emotional) imprisonment. “Straight For The Knife” isn’t horrible. A piano ballad anchored by a martial cadence, the melodramatic metaphors are a little over the top, but the song remains pleasant. “Cellophane” is tentative, but it offers some interesting aural textures. The album closes with “Dressed In Black.” a somber discourse on the strains of emotional bondage. Still, the melody kicks in and it’s more of the same. The problem here is that it feels as though Sia is still operating with a “songwriter for hire” mentality. These songs might be perfect for Rihanna or Ariana Grande, maybe Iggy Azalea. Until Sia is ready to return to the naked emotions and melodic complexities of songs like “Breathe Me” maybe she should just consider writing for other people, and put her solo career on hold.

PET PLACE

Baby, A Legacy of Love!

A

tiny dog passed over the Rainbow Bridge today, leaving behind many tearful humans who were inspired by her story to help other dogs in need. The tributes to Baby are pouring in, lending support to Baby’s heartbroken human mom, Cindy Sorensen. Life started out for Baby as a grim struggle of suffering. The tiny Chihuahua may have been used for breeding purposes until it took a huge toll on her little body. It is more likely her deformities are the result of inbreeding, a practice of profit driven back yard breeders who carelessly breed related dogs and provide no medical treatment or loving care. Inbreeding can produce birth defects such as missing limbs, blindness, deafness, and deformities like Baby’s. Discarded on a busy street in Moreno Valley, Baby somehow managed to survive the traffic but ended up at that City’s public shelter. Her toenails were curled up like ribbons, and she could barely walk. It’s possible she was kept confined to a wire cage and may never have known the soft feel of grass beneath her feet.

Someone posted the shelter intake photo of the Chihuahua on dog rescuer Cindy Sorensen’s Facebook page. Cindy had a Chihuahua who has a deformed mouth similar to this pup, and she had experience with the special feeding technique she might require. Dogs with disabilities have a harder time getting out alive from a public shelter. Wanting to ensure the dog got out safely, Cindy went to Moreno Valley to check on her. When the staff set Baby in front of Cindy, the dog fell over. Her little legs were so deformed that she learned how to walk with them bent. Her tail wagged so hard when Cindy picked her up, and this smart move won Cindy’s heart. There was no returning her to the shelter kennel. Cindy took Baby to many veterinarians but there was nothing they could do for her condition. Eventually she learned to walk on her deformed and bent legs, each step a milestone of joy. Baby had a narrow esophagus and had to be hand fed. The bond between Baby and Cindy was special, and the pup accompanied Cindy on dog rescue transports. Baby was often featured on Facebook, and others followed her progress and her joy in experiencing the simple pleasures of being a dog. Baby helped Cindy

develop a large number of Facebook friends who helped her find homes for hundreds of the Coachella Valley Animal Campus dogs. Today Cindy posted on Facebook, “Baby was my dear friend, my companion, and my reason to rush home. I loved her with all that I am. She went with me on so many dog rescue transports, and got to see others make it out of shelters and go on to new lives. She has been part of my family, and slept by my side every night. Her handicap and deformities were the product of inbreeding, and then she was dumped like trash on a busy street. I will also hold close to me the memory of her extreme will to

live and her simple happiness to be part of a family. God bless you Baby, I will forever love and miss you.” Baby inspired many people to adopt and rescue shelter dogs, and caused some to consider pups with physical limitations. Special needs dogs touch your heart with their optimism and enthusiasm to live life to the fullest every day, focusing on the good things of the moment, oblivious to abilities they may not have. Baby’s legacy is the love she brought to so many humans, and the lives of so many rescue dogs she saved. Jmcafee7@verizon.net

Trick or Treat: Haunting Hootch for Halloween

T

here’s nothing more disturbing and frightful than an empty glass of wine on Halloween. Whether you’re by your lonesome stuck in some haunted house or with a bunch of zombie-clad costumed characters, no one is happy when the wine bar is bare. The days of quiet wine packaging and labeling are done. Wine bottles are partying hearty with outfits as clever as yours. Just a couple of years ago, most of the Halloween wine parties had the same few wine garbs that included Bogle Phantom lurking about, and the Apothic Red hiding in the shadows, even the 7 Deadly Zins was masquerading as a love-potion. Now there’s a plethora of evil vino and every wine shop worth their weight is decorating spooky with eerie labeled wine bottles on every cob-webbed shelf in the store. Labels with unnerving names such as Cockfighter’s Ghost—an Australian wine named after a ghostly steed said to reside in the vineyard after drowning in a nearby creek; Poizin Zinfandel, “the wine to die for”—from the Armida Winery in Dry Creek Valley priced at $25 and the Reserved bottling, which comes complete with its own wooden coffin, costs $60; and yet another Zin, California’s Zombie Zin, where probably the best thing about this wine bottle is the punk rock Zombie daring you to sip some of his evil elixir. Heading to the Wicked Wine Trick or Treat Tasting Halloween Party in Death Valley, California, the pressure was on to bring some startling good ghoulish grog to match the mystery wine category of the night! So I grabbed my Ouija board as the spirits were howling and right before my blood-shot eyes the hobgoblin wine wizard appeared and clutched onto me crying in a spine chilling whisper, “What could be scarier than an over oaked high alcohol California Cabernet or Chardonnay that costs over $100?” Everyone’s a comedian these days—huh? Anyway—besieged with many haunting voices of wine marketers of the past, a couple of wine recommendations really stood out: Ravenswood Limited Release “Besieged” at only $14.99. This wine is a blend of Old Vine California heritage varietals that you vino lovers will recognize: 35% Carignane, 20% Petite Sirah, 18% Zinfandel, 13% Mourvedre, 9% Alicante Bouschet, and 5% Barbera which were sourced from vineyards in Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma Valley, Russian River Valley, Knights Valley and Sonoma Mountain. Small quantities of grapes also sourced from some of the best vineyards in California’s North Coast, Central Coast, and Lodi winegrowing regions. No tricks here but an absolute treat for the bargain price of a focused wine from famed winemaker Joel Peterson. You readers

will remember my interview article with him during the summer. This “Godfather of Zin” is the consummate multitasker and perfectionist in the vineyard and winery. Besieged is red-black in color, rich, robust, with full flavors igniting your senses of blackberry, black cherry, plum, cardamon, resolving into a delicious, smooth, satisfying finish.” Now before you assume that this has all the earmarks of a “flabby fruit bomb”, re-think immediately: This wine is elegant, dry, well-balanced with all the complexities stirring from the heritage varietals. Everyone I shared this wine with thought it was a delicious dinner wine for around $25! It’s a “limited release”, so my advice is to get out and get some quick! It’s not just a wine

for Halloween it’s one for all of our fall and winter meals. At Pavilions in Rancho Mirage it’s selling at the bargain price of $ 11.99 and is just going out the door. The other fun wine to have around Halloween time with its great eerie looking label is Elk Creek Vineyard’s Ghostly White. Comes in both a Chardonnay , which is on the tart side and a Mellow Sweet White on the aromatic side. Elk Creek says, “this Chardonnay is served by 9 out of 10 ghosts at all Halloween parties”—if you wish to run with that, at $18 a bottle. The Mellow Sweet is a crisp and fruity complexity of the Cayuga grape balanced beautifully with the solid body and foundation of the Vidal Blanc grape. Together these grapes produce a Halloween wine with nicely balanced notes of apricot, melon and peach and no tricks! $10.

On a generic note: Nothing says Halloween like Graves. Located just southeast of Bordeaux on the left bank of the Garonne River, this gravelly sub-district of the greater Bordeaux area is known for its intense red wines based on Cabernet Sauvignon, look to Chateau Haut Brion, and, its Sauternes, often blends of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc, look again to Chateau D’Yquem. The ghastly truth here is that these wines sell for over a thousand bucks a bottle! Of course in French, the area’s pronounced “Grawv” so that eeriness might lose in translation—especially at those prices! And finally—the most blood thirsting wine is from the famous Sangiovese grape, which translated from Italian means “the blood of Jupiter”. This grape surely makes your favorite Chianti and even Brunello di Montalcino from the Tuscany area. So next time you’re at a blind wine tasting and you sense and taste blood notes—think Chianti. Indeed wasn’t that Hannibal Lecter’s wine of choice when he dined on a living brain? Don’t be scared! Enjoy your favorite blood favored wine tonite! Cheers! Cork & fork in La Quinta

R

ecently, I was invited to dinner with a few of my closest friends to try a fairly new restaurant that has been getting much attention. I immediately accepted the invite to Cork & Fork for a memorable evening of culinary genius. There is certainly no place like this in the desert. This humble yet intimate eatery serves unique, sharable plates using the freshest, natural, organic, seasonal and local ingredients. The seating space is limited but when I noticed a very talented chef from another restaurant dining nearby, I could not deny that they are doing something very right! As we entered, we admired the beautiful bar and decorative chandeliers that added a modern, yet comfortably welcoming appeal. Though we were seated near the window, we noticed their beautiful open kitchen where the talented culinary staff was on full display. Our server, Christina was as charming as she was attentive, reassuring us that we have some great servers in this valley. After a quick tour of the menu, we were off and running! We began with a few appetizers and shared everything family style. An order of Bruschetta with creamy Laura Chanel goat cheese, roasted tomatoes, and crushed pistachio was placed before us, accented with pesto and a touch of truffle honey. We also shared the Ahi Sesame Poke Nachos: four crisp wonton chips topped generously with fresh Ahi tuna, avocado, togarashi aioli and wasabi “caviar”. The plating on both of these starters was photo worthy and the molecular gastronomy used to create the little caviar-like beads of wasabi was brilliant. Another incredible plate we would share was the Crispy Cauliflower. Flash fried bites of cauliflower, drizzled with a sriracha aioli and sweet pomegranate molasses. Simply delicious! My friends insisted we try the Blistered Shishito Peppers, where one out of every 10 or 15 peppers will set your mouth on fire. I was fortunate to enjoy a few mild peppers with a garlic mayo and hint of lemon. All of our starters were

20

great to share and unlike anything I’ve tried locally. After our few small plates, we shared a couple salads for the table. The Farmer’s Market Salad is a favorite that my friends always order and I could understand why after just one bite. Fresh shaved Brussels sprouts are tossed with baby kale, candied pecans, gorgonzola cheese and diced apples in a light white balsamic dressing. Our other salad selection was the Luau Salad with baby beets and mango, creamy goat cheese, crushed pistachio, crispy wontons and baby greens in a citrus vinaigrette. I am undecided as to which salad was better but we could all agree that they were the best salads we have tried. So many flavors come together, complimenting each other perfectly. Next, we made a few entrée selections and continued to share. The Grown Up Grilled Cheese filled with braised short ribs and aged sharp cheddar was to die for, topped with truffled arugula. Another favorite was the Pan Seared Scallops served over a spiced bourbon sweet potato puree with chunks of bacon and a pine nut gremolata. I’m certain that every dish on this ever changing menu is a masterpiece as we savored every last bite presented before us. A surprising star of the show was their Beef Sliders with 100% Angus chuck, cabernet onions and garlic mayonnaise, served with potato salad. Every bite of these two sliders was better than the previous! The flavors are intense and never seemed to overpower the other flavors in the dish, creating beautiful layers of flavor that can be appreciated by any palate. Finally, we shared a few desserts that were mouthwateringly addictive. The Sunday Sundae was the best sundae you could ask for, with a rich, dark chocolate brownie, topped with salted caramel ice cream and candied pecans, finished with a chocolate ganache. I did not share my Butterscotch Pot De Crème topped with savory bits of Applewood bacon. The combination of sweet pudding and crisp salty bacon was heaven! The featured,

Pumpkin Gelato was creamy and perfect for the fall season. Cork & Fork offers craft beers and over 50 wines to choose from, as well as specialty cocktails made with soju infusion, a lower alcohol spirit. Though the bar does not serve harder alcohol, I have noticed many of the finer restaurants let the food and wine speak for themselves. My first experience

was a home run and I look forward to many more visits as this restaurant will surely become a great success. Cork & Fork is open Tuesday through Sunday from 4pm to 9pm with happy hour from 4pm to 6pm. Visit them at 47875 Caleo Bay Dr. #A106 in La Quinta near Washington and 48th, or check them out at www.corkandforkwinebar.com

Movie Reviews with Robin E. Simmons

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MURRAY ST. VINCENT

It’s a very thin line that separates treacly sweet sentimentality and honest emotions when it’s on the big screen. The former triggers a gag reflex and the latter warms the cockles of one’s heart. Bill Murray shines in this comedic drama as the curmudgeonly neighbor of single working mom Melissa McCarthy and her young son. Murray has become the go to guy for eccentric, idiosyncratic characters that somehow charm us in spite of their often cynical, sarcastic demeanors.

The friendship between Murray’s Vincent and Oliver (Jaeden Lieberher), the 12 year-old neighbor kid reminds me of the relationship between Billy Bob Thornton and the pudgy, put-upon kid in BAD SANTA. I also thought of Clint Eastwood’s GRAN TORINO that took a neighborly conflict in a somewhat similar direction in which the bitter neighbor becomes a hero, if not a saint. Formulaic in its structure with no big surprises, the big pleasure here is watching Murray do his thing with such confidence and seeming naturalness. Here, Murray is burnishing the facets of his über on-screen persona. He knows who he – and his character -- are and welds that with the stuff he knows that audiences bring to his portrayals. Somehow, it all works. There’s no denying the satisfaction in watching the transformation that takes place in both characters when a true friendship is broached -- in spite of all the red flags. McCarthy’s Maggie is terrific as the single, hard-working mom who has just moved into a Brooklyn home with her kid who is stuck without anyone but drunken, gambler Murray to help watch her kid after school. Meanwhile, throw in Daka, a wonderfully low brow Naomi Watts as Murray’s pregnant, Russian, stripper, hooker girlfriend into the mix. These disparate characters and their peripheral stories – however contrived – all come together in a sentimental yet honest ending that actually, for a moment, tightened my throat. Although we have seen this kind

Screeners No.135

of thing before, it’s still a nice reminder to experience a humanistic story that about we do not hastily judge those we don’t at first understand. I liked the way the kid, even though a partner to Murray’s daily routine of dive bars, racetracks and seedy strip clubs, sees Murray in a sweet light. Rest assured that the loose threads are neatly tied up. They all find something new to love in the other and become better, if not happier, humans. I disdain movies with an overt message, but I like stories that offer redemption amidst the rawness of life. I think Murray understands this and has mastered the delicate art of revealing his humanity no matter the character on the page. Young writer director Ted Melfi has struck gold here with his perfect cast and engaging story. Pick of the week. Now playing at Cinemas Palme d’Or. NOW AVAILABLE FOR HOME THEATER: THE VANISHING

THE GHOST IN THE SHELL 25th Anniversary Edition

Over the years, Anime fans have made this a widely favored cross genre title. Hard to believe it’s been two and a half decades since the debut of this truly stunning animation that toys with the now very contemporary concerns of security and hacking. The prescient plot pits Tokyo’s Section Nine security force with apprehending a master hacker known only as the Puppet Master. The metaphors in this drama are hugely relevant, if one allows the mind to wander a bit. I really like the conceit that Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg officer, is more than her mere human appearance suggests and while Motoko ponders the meaning and nature of her own existence in her quest to penetrate the “machine,” she realizes it also is searching for her. Just what is the “ghost” of Motoko’s essence and what does the Puppet Master seek in her? Anchor Bay. Blu-ray. MOEBIUS

A classic Dutch thriller from 1988, THE VANISHING makes its 4K digital debut just in time for Halloween. Essentially a story about two pathologies coming together becomes a horrific tale of madness as a man seeks to understand his girl friend’s disappearance at a rest stop during a biking holiday in France. This strange and exceedingly disturbing film takes place during the three years the girl has been missing and follows the obsessive search by the boyfriend as he puts up posters and fliers seeking info. His hopes that someone will provide a clue is answered when the girl’s abductor contacts him and the two men begin playing a very dangerous game that leads to one of the two scariest movie endings of all time (the other is 1973’s THE WICKER MAN). The film is based on Tim Krabbe’s novella “The Golden Egg,” a phrase that figures in the movie. New extras feature an interview with co-writer and director George Sluizer and actress Johanna der Steege. (Sluizer helped write and directed a Hollywood remake that is inferior in every way.) Criterion. Blu-ray.

Korean filmmaker Kim ki-Duk may be bonkers. His insanely bloody and demented film is not for everyone. Not sure I can even adequately describe the plot in a family paper. Suffice it to say it’s about a very angry woman who severs the genitals of her unfaithful husband and in a rage harms her indifferent adult son in a similar manner. The son takes a path far removed from normality and the mom returns as head of the family now destined for even greater and more horrible (if that’s possible) devastation. Some viewers and critics regard this film as a tongue-incheek and very dark masterpiece. Of what, I am not sure. RAM releasing. Blu-ray. Comments? RobinESimmons@aol.com

Ebola: a History and a Warning

E

bola, the deadly virus from Africa is here. It has made its way to the United State and has spread. So far, there have been eight cases and only one death. The government and health organizations apparently caught off guard, have since revised protocols to try to catch it early, stop potential outbreaks and control contamination. In Richard Preston’s 1994 bestseller, The Hot Zone (Random House, 300 pages), the reader gets up-close and personal with Ebola without the risk of infection. Preston’s book is a thriller. If blood and bodily fluids make you queasy this horror story is not for you. This is a non-fiction nightmare. The Hot Zone begins with Charles Monet, a middle aged French expatriate living in Kenya. On New Year’s weekend in 1980, he and a girl friend went to Mount Elgon, an ancient volcano on the border of Uganda and Kenya, not far from Sudan. The rural area is rich with rain forests, great African beasts and small villages of Masai. Monet explored a cave called Kitum. Although the cave opening was hard to find, its interior was the size of a football field. The cave had petrified wood and bones, glittering crystals and giant insects.

The Hot ZOne By Richard Preston Non-Fiction Seven days later he had a headache that would not go away. Three days after that he became nauseated. He had a fever and his vomiting grew into dry heaves. His eyelids were droopy and his face lost all expression. His eyes bulged from their sockets and were bright red. His face yellowed with red starlike speckles. Monet was sullen, angry and confused. His personality was gone. Friends took Monet to the hospital, where he received antibiotics. It did not work. Doctors recommended he go to Nairobi Hospital, the best in East Africa. Monet got on a plane without help and managed to get to the hospital. There in the lobby, he bled out—spontaneous liquefaction. From every orifice, black gooey blood and guts spewed over the floor. The virus had eaten away his mind and body and was now seeking a new living host! An emergency room doctor tried to clear his airway with his hand. Monet still had a slight pulse and stared into the doctor’s eyes. Monet heaved and coughed into the doctor’s face. Monet was breathing. The doctor tried to give Monet fluids and a blood transfusion, but every time he put a needle in a vein, it would fail. The vain would collapse and the blood would not clot. Monet went into a coma and never regained consciousness. Monet died with the doctor at his side. Nine days later, Monet’s doctor, Shem Musoke, had the virus. Musoke’s doctors collected blood samples and serum and sent frozen tubes to labs around the globe to identify the cause.

It was a form of Marburg: an African organism named for a city in central Germany. A factory there in 1967 was producing vaccines using cells from imported Ugandan monkeys. The monkeys were ill. Called “virus amplification,” the virus soon jumped species, from monkey to human. Thirty-one people caught the virus and seven died just like Monet. Marburg is a filovirus --Latin meaning “thread virus.” In a microscope, it looks like, tangled rope, worms or snakes. When the samples of the virus reached the United States, Musoke’s virus was identified as Ebola. The name and virus came from the area around the Ebola River in Zaire. It was considered one of three sisters: Marburg, Ebola Sudan and Ebola Zaire. All lethal. Fortunately, doctor Musoke survived. In 1990, a new Ebola reared its ugly head at the Reston Primate Quarantine Unit in Virginia. The monkeys were dying with Ebola symptoms. It was not clear how it was spreading in the monkey house since they were held in different rooms only connected by a ventilation system. And these monkeys were natives of the Philippines, not Africa. The United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick took control of the situation. After some politics and debate, the Center for Disease Control joined the efforts. Five workers were exposed, three got sick, but

not with Ebola. Four hundred and fifty animals were euthanized and autopsied. The scientists involved concluded the virus must have spread through the air at the facility. This strain was named Ebola Reston. It was treated as a “level 4 hot agent” – a virus that is extremely lethal and potentially airborne for which there are no vaccines and no cure. Ebola Reston had the same spaghetti-like structure and the monkeys died just like Monet. But, it appeared it may not be dangerous to humans. Is Ebola Reston a mutation? Ebola is a serious and mysterious virus. It is neither dead not alive. It cannot live on its own, but once it finds a cell to penetrate, it goes wild. The virus tries to convert the host into itself! Ebola has seven proteins. At the time The Hot Zone was written, only four were unidentified. It’s thought that the virus has been on the planet a million years. Earlier outbreaks might have been contained because humans naturally quarantined themselves, thus keeping the virus in the village until it burned out. The author writes about Ebola with incredible suspense. The details are terrifying. Preston says: “A hot virus from the rain forest lives within a twenty-four hour plane flight from every city on earth.” If airborne, it could circle the globe in about six hours! The Ebola outbreak continues to concern governments, the CDC, the World Health Organization, healthcare workers and the human population. Supposedly, there is a treatment for Ebola. Certainly, some things have changed since The Hot Zone was published twenty years ago, but the danger of Ebola and its curious nature remain a mystery and a threat.

n Saturday October 25th, the Palm Springs Historical Society will be unveiling the Mamie Van Doran exhibit honoring the famous blonde bombshell. The opening of the exhibit will be followed by a decadent cocktail party at the historic Andreas Hotel and Spa, which was Van Doran’s favorite place to stay in Palm Springs. Mamie Van Doran is one of old Hollywood’s most coveted blonde bombshells from the 1950’s and 60’s era. Van Doran first came to Hollywood with her parents when she was only 13. She came into the limelight at a young age…and as time ensued, joined iconic platinum blondes such as Marilyn Monroe and Jane Mansfield. She was discovered by Howard Hughes, and he cast her in his epic film, Jet Pilot in 1957. But before the Hughes film, Van Doran gained the title of Miss Palm Springs…making the city near and dear to her heart. Van Doran was known for her sexy allure and went on to be featured in many films and had many love interests including Nicky Hilton, Steve McQueen and Jack Dempsey just to name a few. Her 1987 biography, Playing the Field, Sex, Stardom, Love and Life in Hollywood, chronicled her famous and infamous life. The Andreas Hotel and Spa is situated in downtown Palm Springs and was built in the 1930’s. It was a hot spot for Hollywood stars and is a very popular hotel today. The hotel features the Mamie Van Doran suite, where the star used to stay. The suite has since been redecorated, but has the essence of the star all around it…very vintage Hollywood….the room sparkles. The suite will be available for viewing during the cocktail party.

The exhibit opens at the Palm Springs Historical Society at 10am to 4pm on Saturday October 25th. The following cocktail party will take place from 5:30pm to 7:30pm and honoring Van Doran and will also serve as the 2014/2015 season kick-off for the Palm Springs Historical Society. The party will offer hors d’oeuvres provided by LULU California Bistro, dessert by Manhattan of the Desert and a no host bar will be present. The highlight will be an appearance by Mamie Van Doran in all of her glamorous glory. Tickets are $55 for members and $65 for non-members of the Palm Springs Historical Society (all proceeds benefit the Palm Springs Historical Society). Reservations are required and vintage cocktail party attire is encouraged. It is sure to be a night filled with old school glitz and glamour…Palm Springs style! ELECTION 2014: THE JUSTICES

O

ne of the items on this year’s election ballot where many people have very little information relates to the election of justices. This year we have thirteen justices up for election, three for the California Supreme Court and ten for the Courts of Appeal. When a justice is elected, they serve twelve year terms with the Court. Seven people make up the California Supreme Court - four women and three men. Goodwin Liu, 44, is first on the ballot. Appointed in 2011, Liu is the son of Taiwanese immigrant parents. Liu was a Professor of Law at UC-Berkeley prior to this appointment. A graduate of Stanford with a Biology Degree in 1991, Liu received Masters Degrees in Philosophy and Psychology at Oxford before earning a law degree from Yale. Some of his

legal background includes antitrust matters, white collar crime and product liability. If elected, Mariano-Florentino Cuellar, 41, will be the only Hispanic on the Court. He was unanimously confirmed for the Supreme Court in August as successor to retiring justice Marvin Baxter. Born in Mexico, Cuellar had been a teacher at Stanford since 2001. Cuellar moved to Calexico in 1987 at the age of 14 when his father secured a teaching job. Cuellar has an undergraduate degree from Harvard, a law degree from Yale and a Ph.D in political science from Stanford. Cuellar is considered an expert in administrative, criminal and international law. Kathryn Wedegar, 78, has served since 1994. She was first in her class at George Washington University as well as UCBerkeley where she earned her law degree. Additionally, Wedegar was the first woman to serve as editor-in-chief of the California Law Review. The Courts of Appeal for our District has three divisions. Division 1 has ten justices split evenly between men and women. Division 2 has seven justices with only one woman while Division 3 has eight justices with only two women. Terry O’Rourke, 67, was appointed by Governor Wilson in 1998 despite a

W

e often read about the generous things some people do for complete strangers during the Christmas Season. But the opposite is also true. This is the time of the year when crooks come out of the woodwork. As of October 22, 2014, though our economy is improving we are still dealing with what some call a “down economy”. There are many people hurting and thus committing crimes they might not have performed if they had a job. We are all at risk and today I am meeting today with a prospective client who assures me was notified by a bank in Spain that he has inherited $9.5 Million from a relative he does not know. I told him at first blush I was afraid this was a scam. We will see. Merchants are more at risk when the stores are crowded making it easier for crooks to “do their thing” unnoticed. One trick is the Booster Box. This large box or bag has a false spring loaded bottom. The crook sets it down over a slightly smaller shopping bag, purse or product. The Booster Box is hollow and when it is placed over another item, the spring loaded bottom secures the item about to be stolen. It is easier for the thief to walk away when the stores are very crowded and people are bumping into one another. It is during this holiday season that you see more customers placing their purse or other purchases on the ground or counter while they are shopping. The Booster box can also be placed over an item like a Gucci purse or shoes on a sales table. Like David Copperfield, all of a sudden ….poof…..the purse disappears. So now that you know there is such a device hopefully you will think twice about where you set your purse or bag down in an airport, hotel, coffee shop, department store or anywhere else a

thief might be lurking. Some thieves don’t need any equipment to steal. While shoppers are in stores a car can be stolen without obtaining the owner’s keys or hot wiring the car. The thief looks on the left front windshield for the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) number. They write the VIN number down and either call an accomplice waiting at a dealership or go themselves to the car dealership’s parts department and explain they own the car with that VIN number and they lost their keys. A new device to open the car will be provided to the thief… and then the rest is history. Cell Phones are another popular target for thieves because they have private emails, bank account records, personal codes and passwords. Obtaining these items makes it easy to steal your money or ID. Often there are two crooks that work together with one bumping and distracting you and the other “picking your pocket.” Credit card information can also be stolen without taking the physical credit card. These sophisticated thieves have a RFID (Radio Frequency Identification Device) which is half the size of a small laptop and costs less than $100. This card reading device, steals your personal info off your credit card. The Radio Frequency Identification is a tiny chip in our credit and debit cards. If your card has the symbol of 4 waves )))) or says Pay Pass, Pay Wave or Blink it has RFID. The bad guys can instantaneously transfer your personal information from the RFID onto a hotel credit card sized room key. That room key becomes a “credit card” which can be used to swipe and charge things against your account. To avoid this put your credit cards into a protective sleeve that has an aluminum lining which can be purchased locally

scathingly negative evaluation by the state bar committee. Many attribute the negative review to O’Rourke’s outspoken criticism of the “cozy” relationship between some attorneys and judges in San Diego. O’Rourke was educated at Claremont (1969) with a J.D. from Harvard. Gilbert Nares, 70, has served on the Courts of Appeal for the last twenty-five years. From the San Diego area, he was originally appointed to the San Diego Courts by Governor Brown before being elevated to the Court of Appeal by Governor Deukmejian. Alex McDonald, 78, has served since 1995. He graduated from Stanford with an Industrial Engineering Degree in 1958 with an undergraduate in law from UC Berkeley. James McIntyre, 76, has served since 1996. From the San Diego Court system, he was a trial attorney defending doctors and hospitals in malpractice cases prior to his appointment. His education is from Brown (1960) and Stanford. Thomas Hollenhorst, 68, has served since 1988. Previously, he was a judge in the Riverside Courts system. Hollenhorst

at “It’s in the Bag”. This type of theft can also occur with your passport at an airport so you should buy protective sleeves for both. With respect to credit cards when you receive them in the mail write “ASK FOR PHOTO ID” on the back, instead of signing your name. That gives you one more level of insulation against the bad guys when they try to use your card. Thieves are also known to wait in the parking lot at movie theatres and when you leave your car they break in and steal your registration and get the address of your home off of it or your home destination on your navigator. They can then burglarize your home while you are watching the movie. A car loaded with wrapped gifts is very tempting to someone down on their luck or just plain crooked. Never keep your purchases in plain sight. Always use your trunk. Another theft is stealing Library cards and checking out and charging DVD’s that are then sold on the internet. If that happens you must contact the library to put a “hold” on your card. Report lost or stolen checks asap so the bank can block payment on them. You should also notify your banker of suspicious phones inquiries such as asking for account information to verify a statement or award a prize. it is important to guard your ATM PIN and ATM receipts. Shred financial solicitations for credit cards as well as bank statements before disposing of them. Creditors or businesses must provide copies of business records or fraudulent accounts or transactions related to them. This information can assist the victim in proving that they are in fact victims. However the first thing to do when you think you have been a victim is to contact the Riverside County Sheriffs Department so you have a report to provide to insurance companies or credit agencies.

attended San Jose State and UC-San Francisco’s Hastings School of Law. Rated “exceptionally qualified” by the Commission on Judicial Appointments, Kathleen O’Leary has been the presiding judge of Division 3 since 2012 and served on the Courts of Appeal since 2000. From Orange County, her education is from Loyola and Southwestern University. Dutch-born William Rylaarsdam, 77, graduated UC Berkeley in 1957 and Loyola in 1964. Appointed in 1995, Rylaarsdam has written two widely used law textbooks. Appointed in 2001, Richard Aronson, 64, has served as a Public Defender as well as Deputy District Attorney in San Bernardino. Aronson received his undergraduate and J.D. degrees from UC San Diego. David Thompon, 58, was appointed in 2012. His background is heavily skewed toward real estate law. Raised in Orange County, Thompson was educated at Georgetown and UCLA. On this Court since 2002, Richard D. Fybel, 68, received his undergraduate and J.D. degrees from UCLA. Since 2004, Fybel has chaired the Judicial Ethics Committee for the Supreme Court.

Don’t Be A Pumpkin Head!

T

here’s a lot to cover for Halloween Safety and rather be a Pumpkin Head, let go over a few safety reminders advises Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna. Avoid trick-or-treating alone. Walk in groups or with a trusted adult. Fasten reflective tape to costumes and bags to help drivers see you. Examine all treats for choking hazards and tampering before eating them. Limit the amount of treats you eat. Hold a flashlight while trick-or-treating to help you see and others see you. Always walk and don’t run from house to house. Look both ways before crossing the street. Use established crosswalks wherever possible. Only walk on sidewalks whenever

possible, or on the far edge of the road facing traffic to stay safe. Remind drivers to watch out for trick-or-treaters and to drive safely. Wear well-fitting masks, costumes, and shoes to avoid blocked vision, trips, and falls. Enter homes only if you’re with a trusted adult. Only visit well-lit houses. Don’t stop at dark houses. Be sure walking areas and stairs are well-lit and free of obstacles that could result in falls. Never accept rides from strangers. Eat only factory-wrapped treats. Avoid eating homemade treats made by strangers. There’s a lot more to cover, so visit: www.cdc.gov/family/halloween Be Safe! Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna

Celebrating the Culinary Arts with PS Underground

A

local highlight for Halloween this year comes to us courtesy of PS Underground. For five nights, PS Underground founders, David Horgen and Michael Fietsam, combine theatre and food in a culinary theatre production called, “Bite: Embrace the Dark.” This ghoulish culinary theater production takes place on the eves of October 24, 25, 28, 29 and 31 and is by reservation only. At midnight the evening before your dinner, you will receive an email telling you where “Bite” is being held. The evening itself is a six course dinner “of gothic proportions” with free flowing blood…we mean wine. The details of the show cannot be shared with you however suffice it to say that this is only for those who are NOT easily frightened, squeamish or faint of heart. For more information, visit www.psunderground.com. Once “Bite” has gone back underground, the duo from PS Underground embarks on a season-long culinary adventure entitled, “Light.” David and Michael have termed these dinners as “Culinary Raves for Adults.” Each dinner is a unique and oneof-a-kind experience that is part high-end dinner party, part performance art and part

culinary theatre. As with all PS Underground dinners, you will reserve your event tickets online. The evening before your reservation, you receive an email with the location of the event as well as suggestions on how to dress. Once you arrive at the secret location, there is a reception where you get to know others with whom you will be dining followed by a dinner like no other with numerous twists and turns meant to awaken all of your senses. There’s No Controversy: Jameis Winston Deserves To Be Benched

H

e was “Famous Jameis” for most of the 2013 college football season. A young man whose size and athleticism was an indisputable force for Florida State football. He erupted into the national spotlight September 2, 2013 with a monstrous 25 for 27, 356 yards and 4 touchdown performance at Pittsburgh. Everyone wanted to watch Jameis Winston play football. But nobody knew who he was off the field. Last fall reports surfaced that he was under investigation for a sexual assault that allegedly occurred in 2012, before Winston had taken a snap for the Seminoles top-flight program. A year later, local prosecutors decided there wasn’t enough evidence to prosecute, let alone convict a young man of the heinous act. Two days after that decision came down, Winston led the Seminoles in a win over Duke for the ACC title. Media and supporters lauded his ability to “compartmentalize” the distraction of having, you know, that rape charge, hanging around his neck. Winston went on to win the Heisman Trophy and the BCS National Title. Everyone loved to watch Jameis Winston play football. But few knew who he was off the field. The New York Times wrote a stunning investigative piece in April of 2014 outlining the shoddy investigation by Tallahassee police and Florida State’s limp response to the accusations. It outlines the timeline of events, lazy investigation, and shaming of the alleged victim by police and school officials. The same public officials who took an oath to procure authority were all too willing to relinquish parts of it and purportedly misused the power they could. In many ways, the NYT report outlines the kinds of abuse of power you’d hope only happens in movies where the good guys uncover the cover up

and expose the bad guys who get punished. But sadly, in big-time college football, when bad guys win football games, they become “good guys” in the eyes of too many blind fans willing to abdicate their sensibility and morality for the sake of victory. Everyone loves to watch Jameis Winston play football. And we’re beginning to know who he is off the field. As though the investigation into a sexual assault weren’t enough cause to take pause when considering whether a player should be the face of a program, he has since been punished for theft and yelling obscenities while standing on a table in the middle of a student union. I can’t print the obscene language he used, but it was a grotesque way of describing intercourse with a female. You’d be hard-pressed to find ANYONE with enough stupidity running through their veins to shout this phrase in a public forum, let alone a high profile athlete. And especially inconceivable: the fact he’d been investigated for rape. You’d think the school would be horrified that the young man they tabbed as the face of the program could display such filthy discernment. Nope, for this outburst, Winston was suspended one game where he stood on the sidelines and cheered for his team as though he pulled a hammy. The latest controversy involves THOUSANDS of Winston-autographed memorabilia for sale on the Internet. The same company that paid Johnny Manziel to autograph goodies is the same company the NCAA is investigating to see if Winston was paid for his signature. There’s a minimum of 4 NCAA violations Winston is currently being investigated for.

umb: It makes sense to have the excessive celebration penalty in the rulebook. I understand why it’s there. I get it. Officials need some kind of option if a player goes nuts and stops the game for 90 seconds. Just the threat of a celebration penalty helps keep games from getting out of control every play. But while the threat doesn’t work if refs never call it, actually calling these penalties in meaningful games is more ridiculous than any celebration could be. This past week gave us two reminders of the stupidity here. First came Monday Night Football, when the officials flagged Chiefs safety Husain Abdullah after he dropped to his knees in prayer in the end zone. Abdullah is Muslim, so the penalty was considered potentially discriminatory when it happened. The NFL later apologized, but let’s not forget just how stupid it is to penalize anyone for sliding on his knees through the end zone. He didn’t have to be praying to make that flag horrible. He wasn’t using ridiculous props, or delaying the game, or anything. “Going to his knees” is why he was flagged, which makes no sense. Then came Thursday night. With Arizona

October 23 to October 29, 2014

and Oregon tied late in the fourth quarter of a game that had been going back and forth all second half, the Ducks sacked the Wildcats to force a field goal attempt and get the ball back for a final possession. But wait… a celebration from Tony Washington was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, allowing Arizona to (a) get a first down, (b) milk more time off the clock, and (c) score what turned into the game-winning touchdown to upset the no. 2 team in the country. This made Washington the goat of the loss, it put an asterisk next to what should have been a killer upset, and even Arizona fans thought it was bullshit. Nobody ever likes

AND Florida State has decided to open a disciplinary hearing into the rape allegations. But Florida State keeps winning football games and their head coach Jimbo Fisher isn’t willing to pull the rug out from underneath himself and the countless others who make millions off Winston’s athleticism and wins. After Florida State stormed back from an early deficit against Notre Dame and ended up beating the Fighting Irish to remain undefeated on the season and still in the national title conversation, Fisher and Winston met at mid-field. As Winston shouted, “Let’s enjoy this one right here, let’s enjoy this one right here, baby. Let’s go.” Fisher advised him, “Now here’s what you’ve got to do,” Fisher said into Winston’s ear. “Calm down, don’t give them ... act very passive right here and get people back on your side. Do you understand what I’m telling you? Humble, humble pie. You got me?” Winston acknowledged his coach and went on with his day, celebrating the win. Fisher then, in post-game interviews, spoke of FSU and said, “This is a high-character program that’s ran the right way, on class, on dignity, in the classroom, off the field, and this team shows it.” I just threw up in my mouth. The same cameras that caught him coaching his athlete to “act passive right here” in hopes to “get people back on your side” also said they have dignity and class? Fisher either doesn’t know what those words mean, or worse, he’s lying to himself and the nation. I’m not buying it folks. That is a classic PR spin: “Just act the part and let the controversy blow over.” Fisher is hoping by “acting passive” and being “humble” in word, Winston will lull the American public into believing his past misgivings were merely out of character or minor mistakes of a young man. Meanwhile, as long as Winston can, you know, manage not to offer X-rated rants in the student

union anymore or avoid stealing crab legs, Fisher can go on the recruiting trail and tell anyone and everyone who’s got an ear to listen that all he’s done is support his guy and that they’ll be afforded the same blind allegiance as well. It’s sickening. The machine that is big-time college football is so fraught with corruption that a young man who’s bad behavior is enough to make Lindsey Lohan blush, is coddled, coached to “act” certain ways and allowed to be the face of a program while his coach plunges his head in the sand for the sake of procuring a solid recruiting class and a fat wallet for his cronies. Haven’t we learned, after a difficult summer in the NFL and NBA, that the only way to effectively change those behaving badly in sports is to take them out of the game? Winston should have been benched long ago, and should be benched immediately. Sure, everyone loves to watch Jameis Winston play football. But we now know too much about who he is off the field. by Flint Wheeler the celebration penalty. Players, coaches, broadcasters. Nobody. In the fourth quarter of a tie game, you should have to go full Rod Tidwell to get flagged for 15 yards. After last night, I finally understand what college football people mean when they make all of those jokes about Pac-12 refs. That gets to the larger point: We can’t trust officials to not take those celebration rules and enforce them in the dumbest way possible. In college, in the pros — it makes no difference. Officials will always call awful celebration penalties, and best-case scenario it’ll be embarrassing; in the worst-case scenario, it’ll change games. Please just ban these penalties altogether. Everyone will survive. And you know what? I miss the days when Joe Horn’s cell phone was the biggest controversy in football. It was a better time. Dumber: Michigan Football. You wouldn’t think things could get any worse after back-to-back home losses to Utah (3-point underdogs) and Minnesota (10-point underdogs), but they sure did! After Brady Hoke sent a clearly concussed Shane Morris back into the game, there was widespread outrage, including calls for Hoke’s and athletic director Dave Brandon’s jobs. The

incident triggered campus protests, and the Michigan president apologized to everyone on behalf of his football program. Not a great week for Michigan Men. If you’re one of the people who thinks this wouldn’t have been nearly as big of a deal if Hoke were winning, that’s definitely true, but not for the reasons you think. If Michigan were winning this year, Hoke would have plenty of job security, and he’d have been in perfect position Monday to just admit he made a huge mistake, promise to be better, etc. That would have been the end of the story. My grandpa used to say, and I repeat it to my juniors, “When you’re right, be humble, when your wrong, admit it”. Simple but so, so true. o you want to get fit, but you don’t like to run, you don’t know how to swim, and you don’t have a bike or a gym membership. What other options are there? You enjoy the outside, but finances are tight and your job limits your time. Sound familiar? Sometimes it is just easier to not do anything even though your conscience and the scale continues to remind you that you should do something. The good news is you can get fit without needing a lot of time, money or special equipment. It is possible to lose weight, strengthen and tone your muscles, improve your cardio respiratory system and perk up your mood by simply taking a walk. It is true; you really can walk your way into fitness. It is so easy – and it works! Studies have found that the same energy used for moderate-intensity walking and vigorousintensity running resulted in similar health benefits. All you have to do is lace up a good pair of sneakers, wear some comfortable clothes – and walk! There is nothing more to it than that. It is inexpensive, safe and has a very low exercise dropout rate. If you can, set aside 30 minutes a day to walk. If can’t take that much time, consider breaking it up into two 15 minute sessions or three 10 minute sessions throughout the day. The key is to start. Before you know it brisk walking will become a part of your routine and you will be reaping the health benefits.

The toughest thing about starting a workout plan is developing the habit. A habit begins with discipline and consistency. Walk every day. Incorporate it into your schedule. Start off simply. Park a distance away from the front door and walk to the entrance. Take your lunch break and walk around the block. Meet a friend at the park and take a brisk walk together. And then increase your efforts as you go. Pick up your walking pace so your heart gets pumping. Get a pedometer and count your steps. Add hills and rugged terrain to your routine. Getting fit does not have to be difficult. Walking is easy – and it works! For more fit tips call Karen 760-565-7467 or come by the Palm Desert Aquatic Center.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY Week of October 23

ARIES (March 21-April 19): The driest place on the planet is the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. It gets about a half-inch of rain per year. And yet in 2011, archaeologists discovered that it’s also home to a site containing the fossilized skeletons of numerous whales and other ancient sea creatures. I’m detecting a metaphorically comparable anomaly in your vicinity, Aries. A seemingly arid, empty part of your life harbors buried secrets that are available for you to explore. If you follow the clues, you may discover rich pickings that will inspire you to revise your history. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Businessman Warren Buffet is worth $65.5 billion, but regularly gives away 27 percent of his fortune to charity. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates owns $78 billion, and donates 36 percent. Then there are the members of the Walton family, owners of Walmart, where 100 million Americans shop weekly. The Waltons have $136 billion, of which they contribute .04 percent to good causes. You are not wealthy in the same way these people are, Taurus. Your riches consist of resources like your skills, relationships, emotional intelligence, creative power, and capacity for love. My invitation to you is to be extra generous with those assets -- not as lavish as Buffet or Gates, perhaps, but much more than the Waltons. You are in a phase when giving your gifts is one of the best things you can do to bolster your own health, wealth, and well-being. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): You have two options. You can be in denial about your real feelings and ignore what needs to be fixed and wait for trouble to come find you. Or else you can vow to be resilient and summon your feistiest curiosity and go out searching for trouble. The difference between these two approaches is dramatic. If you mope and sigh and hide, the messy trouble that arrives will be indigestible. But if you are brave and proactive, the interesting trouble you get will ultimately evolve into a blessing. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Astronauts on the International Space Station never wash their underwear. They don’t have enough water at their disposal to waste on a luxury like that. Instead, they fling the dirty laundry out into space. As it falls to Earth, it burns up in the atmosphere. I wish you had an amenity like that right now. In fact, I wish you had a host of amenities like that. If there was ever a time when you should be liberated from having to wash your underwear, make your bed, sweep the floor, and do the dishes, it would be now. Why? Because there are much better ways to spend your time. You’ve got sacred quests to embark on, heroic adventures to accomplish, historical turning points to initiate. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): What are those new whisperings in your head? Are they messages from your inner teacher? Beacons beamed back through time from the Future You? Clues from the wise parts of your unconscious mind? Whatever they are, Leo, pay attention. These signals from the Great Beyond may not be clear yet, but if you are sufficiently patient, they will eventually tell you how to take advantage of a big plot twist. But here’s a caveat: Don’t automatically believe every single thing the whisperings tell you. Their counsel may not be 100-percent accurate. Be both receptive and discerning toward them. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): In the Englishspeaking world, a sundae is a luxurious dessert that features ice cream topped with sweet treats like syrup, sprinkles, and fruits. In Korea, a sundae is something very different. It consists of a cow’s or pig’s intestines crammed with noodles, barley, and pig’s blood. I expect that in the coming week you will be faced with a decision that has metaphorical similarities to the choice between a sundae and a sundae. Make sure you are quite clear about the true nature of each option. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): The average serving of pasta on a typical American’s plate is almost 480 percent bigger than what’s recommended as a healthy portion. So says a research paper titled

© Copyright 2012 Rob Brezsny

“The Contribution of Expanding Portion Sizes to the U.S. Obesity Epidemic,” by Lisa R. Young and Marion Nestle. Muffins are 333 percent larger than they need to be, the authors say, and steaks are 224 percent excessive. Don’t get caught up in this trend, Libra. Get what you need, but not way, way more than what you need. For that matter, be judicious in your approach to all of life’s necessities. The coming phase is a time when you will thrive by applying the Goldilocks principle: neither too much nor too little, but just right. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “Children are the most desirable opponents at Scrabble,” declares Scorpio author Fran Lebowitz, “as they are both easy to beat and fun to cheat.” I don’t wholeheartedly endorse that advice for you in the coming days, Scorpio. But would you consider a milder version of it? Let’s propose, instead, that you simply seek easy victories to boost your confidence and hone your skills. By this time next week, if all goes well, you will be ready to take on more ambitious challenges. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You are entering a phase when you will have more luck than usual as you try to banish parasitic influences, unworthy burdens, and lost causes. Here are some projects you might want to work on: 1. Bid farewell to anyone who brings out the worst in you. 2. Heal the twisted effect an adversary has had on you. 3. Get rid of any object that symbolizes failure or pathology. 4. Declare your independence from a situation that wastes your time or drains your resources. 5. Shed any guilt you feel for taking good care of yourself. 6. Stop a bad habit cold turkey. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Are you ready to be as affable as a Sagittarius, as charismatic as a Leo, as empathetic as a Cancerian, and as vigorous an instigator as an Aries? No? You’re not? You’re afraid that would require you to push yourself too far outside your comfort zone? OK, then. Are you willing to be half as affable as a Sagittarius, half as charismatic as a Leo, half as empathetic as a Cancerian, and half as inspiring an instigator as an Aries? Or even a quarter as much? I hope you will at least stretch yourself in these directions, Capricorn, because doing so would allow you to take maximum advantage of the spectacular social opportunities that will be available for you in the next four weeks. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): In the coming weeks I hope you will find practical ways to express your new-found freedom. All the explorations and experiments you have enjoyed recently were fun and provocative, but now it’s time to use the insights they sparked to upgrade your life back in the daily grind. Please don’t misunderstand what I’m saying. I love it when you are dreamy and excitable and farseeing, and would never ask you to tone down those attractive qualities. But I am also rooting for you to bring the high-flying parts of you down to earth so that you can reap the full benefits of the bounty they have stirred up. If you work to become more well-grounded, I predict that you will be situated in a new power spot by December 1. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): The heavy metal band known as Hatebeak broadened the definition of what constitutes music. Its lead singer was Waldo, an African grey parrot. A review by Aquarius Records called Waldo’s squawks “completely and stupidly brilliant.” For Hatebeak’s second album, they collaborated with animal rights’ activists in the band Caninus, whose lead vocalists were two pitbull terriers, Basil and Budgie. In the coming weeks, Pisces, I’d love to see you get inspired by these experiments. I think you will generate interesting results as you explore expansive, even unprecedented approaches in your own chosen field. UNIQUE Y

by Bronwyn Ison

our fingerprints differentiate you from everyone, as does your DNA. While these are obvious physical traits and characteristics, each of us is unique in other ways. Each person can attest we are likely our own worst critics. We are accomplished at discovering our faults. Have you asked yourself what makes you unique? Not better, not privileged or entitled. What makes you an individual from the rest of the crowd? As you ponder this question, it may be challenging due to looking at our positive attributes. As humans we are quick to judge ourselves. Pause; grab a pen and a piece of paper. Write down ten positive traits about YOU! Clearly you have more than ten but this is a quick exercise recognizing that you are unique. Why are you unique? Because, each and every one of us is special! You have made your list and now you can begin to manifest on your exceptional attributes and talents. It is your time to hone in and refine how special you truly are as a person and how others may perceive you. Perhaps your list came up a little short. Here are a few suggestions. Your goals and aspirations may be similar to another person but it is the thought process and journey that will render your experience different. Your professional dreams and goals may vary from limited to multi-faceted. You are cultivating personal drive and ambition. This sets you apart and allows you to think of what you would like to leave as your legacy. The relationships you keep speak volumes about the person you are. How do you interact with others? Are you kind? How do you comport yourself around other people? Displaying kindness and love will set you apart from those who are hurtful or unkind. This will distinguish you. How do you communicate with others? How one communicates with others is carefully observed. Body language, diction,

expressions, how you write a letter or send a text. This is your image. How you project yourself to the world is an important part of building your individuality. Aside from your body and facial features, I am talking about your individual style. How you dress, your accessories or how you wear your hair. You demonstrate a unique style every time you walk out the door. We also know our past experiences render us unique. Our morals, ethics, attitude, hobbies and habits also differentiate us from the rest. Now get out in the big world and showcase your uniqueness. Everyday is an opportunity to shine brighter than the day before. Be true to yourself and the rest will always follow. A Reason to Do it Anyway

M

y friend Judith is an exceptional individual. She is one of those rare “do it anyway” people. Generous beyond measure she is the first to come to the aid of a friend, a foe or a stranger. Serving as a role model for me, her children and the community, Judith’s kind deeds have touched the lives of many. She spends her life paying it forward. The other day over lunch I could tell something was bothering my virtuous friend. After a bit of dancing around with the “oh it’s nothing” line, she finally looked me in the eye and with a deep sigh confessed to feeling saddened by the action of a friend. In her typically do-good style, Judith came to the aid of an associate by paying her tuition to a self development class, no strings attached. While enrolling in the sixteen week workshop her friend was filled with gratitude. By week four she was a drop-out with a bitter complaining attitude about the instructor, the other students and any other reason she could find to justify walking away from Judith’s generous investment in her future. It was obvious to me Judith had no regrets about assisting the woman. Her concern was the missed opportunity. Completing the course would have helped this individual both personally and professionally. As our discussion

32

came to an end, I asked Judith if there was a lesson learned for her in this situation. She gave me her warm, loving 1,000 watt smile and said yes… “do it anyway.” If you are familiar with the verses written on the wall of Mother Teresa’s home for children, in Calcutta, India, you understand the mantra. The first phrase is: “People are often unreasonable, irrational and self-centered. Love them anyway.” People like Judith who offer kindness with no expectations have a pure heart and positive mindset. The act of unconditional giving is no easy feat. Most of us are looking for a bit of emotional payback, perhaps a smidgeon of recognition, or a minute to bask in the warm glow of expressed gratitude. We often feel cheated when denied a heartfelt thank you. Judith and other individuals with her mindset understand that expecting reciprocity limits the pureness of the gift. A caring unselfish deed carries an inherent emotional benefit. Test this by performing an unconditional kindness this week. By giving with no expectation, you will experience a sense of peace and joy which is an incentive to “do it anyway.” Sunny Simon is the owner of Raise the Bar High Life and Career Coaching. Arthritis

Doc, I play a lot of guitar and my hands will hurt the next day. The pain is almost every day now, do I have arthritis? -Mark, Morongo Valley

Mark, you may have osteoarthritis of the hands. Arthritis is a general term which means inflammation of the joints. I generally refer to osteoarthritis as the “wear and tear arthritis” as it develops over time with repetitive use of a joint or previous injuries to a joint. In osteoarthritis, the protective cushioning in the joint (cartilage) wears out and eventually bone will rub against bone. Additional bone growth may develop at the site of the inflammation resulting in bone spurs. Surrounding tissue such as tendons and ligaments can become affected and cause more pain to the area. In severe cases, the joints may become deformed and limit function and range of motion. Common symptoms of arthritis are; joint pain and stiffness, swelling in the joints, a grinding or crunching sound in the joint with range of motion and decreased range of motion. There is no cure for osteoarthritis, but there are several treatment options. If possible, modify the activity that causes the pain. Perform regular range of motion exercises to prevent stiffness to the joints. Moist heat to the area can also help relieve pain. Over the counter medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) can help reduce the pain along with ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) and naprosyn (Aleve). Ibuprofen and naprosyn will help reduce the inflammation and decrease pain. These over the counter medication should only be taken as directed because they can cause liver and kidney damage if taken in excess. Supplements such as chondroitin and glucosamine may help reduce arthritis pain, but they need to be taken on a regular basis and the pain

relieving effect may not become evident for several weeks. I have found that regular use of tumeric and omega 3 fish oil may also help reduce the pain and inflammation of arthritis. Diet can also affect arthritis. Fried and processed food can trigger inflammation. Dairy, high amounts of sugar and salt can also trigger inflammation and increase joint pain. Research has shown that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can help reduce inflammation and joint pain.

I think I may have arthritis in my feet, what is the difference between osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis? -Jill, La Quinta

Jill, as I explained above, osteoarthritis develops over time and is a result of “wear and tear” on the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis is a result of your body’s own immune system attacking your joints. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease. Pain medication, supplements and dietary changes for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis are similar to osteoarthritis but treatment of rheumatoid arthritis may also include special medications that can modify the immune system thus controlling flare ups and pain. Rheumatoid arthritis generally affects small and large joints on both sides of the body, whereas osteoarthritis usually affects one set of joints on one side of the body. Whole body symptoms are generally not present in osteoarthritis while people affected with rheumatoid arthritis can feel fatigued and general malaise.
