BB’S 34TH ANNUAL HALLOWEEN BASH AT HOTEL ZOSO SATURDAY, OCTOBER 27

t’s that special creepy time of year when thoughts of witches, vampires and ghosts fill the imagination and ghouls come out to play. And if you live in the Coachella Valley, it’s also when the most anticipated party of the year takes place, BB Ingle’s Annual Halloween Bash! BB’s parties are legendary, and have been entertaining desert party goers for decades. His Halloween parties in particular are enormously popular, giving attendees the chance to shed their everyday persona and dress up as whatever they want to for a night of decadent freaky fun. His parties are epic, and bring people from not only the desert area, but all over Southern California to attend. Last year’s event, held at the Hard Rock Hotel (now Hotel Zoso) was enormous, bringing out well over 2,000 people to play. The costumes ranged from the demur, to over the top, with even a full-fledged Genie cruising around on his very own magic carpet willing to take pictures with anyone that would ask. You can probably find just about any costume at BB’s party; it is a coveted event that people look forward to, an event that stimulates all the senses. BB must have been born to bring people together, starting his career as a leader in social gatherings back in the 80’s when he and a few others founded BB O’Briens. The night spot was a constant in desert nightlife, and after its closure, BB began throwing special holiday/event parties earning him

the Master of Events and Godfather of parties title that he has today. BB is also the 5 time winner of the CV Music Awards “Promoter of the Year” and was twice chosen as one of the CV Weekly’s twelve most Interesting and Influential Men in the Coachella Valley of 2015 2016. This year BB’s 34th Annual Halloween Bash, will take place on Saturday night, October 27th and will be held at the newly named Hotel Zoso (formerly Hard Rock Hotel) in downtown Palm Springs. The mega party, which is being produced by Ray Phillips and RSP Productions, will be spread out around the hotel, incorporating the elaborate underground ballroom. Five stages of entertainment include heart pumping music from DJ’s: Ray Phillips, C3ASARE, Aaron C, The Deep Ones, DJ Mike,

DJ Fathom, plus others, playing all genres of music including Top 40, Hip-Hop, EDM, Classic Rock and Latin. The party will also feature the classic rock band Dude Jones and will be introducing the talented young singing sensation Ariss Durazo. There will also be a special showcase performance by “Earth to Mars” the Bruno Mars Experience Tribute Show. Food will be available through hotel outlets and there will be plenty of bars to accommodate thirsty hell raisers. Halloween has long been a holiday for kids to dress up, knock on stranger’s doors and extort candy (give me a treat or else). But the holiday has evolved into a much needed adult break from reality as well. It’s a night of fantasy, scares, dares, tricks and treats. And for us living in the desert, we have been lucky to have the “Pied Piper” of parties in our midst to throw exciting, edgy Halloween events every year. With BB’s 34th Annual Halloween Bash at the Hotel Zoso in Palm Springs, it is certain that there will be plenty of treats for us all….and maybe a scary trick or two. Happy Halloween! The party goes from 8:30pm to 2am and guests must be 21 or older to enter. Tickets are priced at $25 per person in advance for general admission online at PartywithBB. com. Tickets are also available at: Skitzo Kitty, Sensuality, and PSA Organica. For tickets visit www.partywithBB.com or call 760-880-1059.

A STAGE REVIEW OF ‘WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?’

W

hat is it about horror or tragedy that pulls us in and forces us to be unwitting accomplices to the most horrific of spectacles? Allowing ourselves to be held captive as we derive some perverse pleasure from the misery of others. Edward Albee’s 1962 Tony award winning drama, “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?,” is the best example of the human tragic condition that anyone could imagine. Palm Canyon’s production of this dark drama reveals the broken and bloody underbelly of a marriage gone horribly wrong. Albee explained his inspiration for the title as this; “Who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf means who’s afraid of the big bad wolf . . . who’s afraid of living life without false illusions.” George and Martha a couple in their 40’s, are two coiled rattle snakes who rise to the full extent of their poisonous height as they strike out at each other and their house guests, Nick and Honey, a young couple in their 20’s. Yo Younger, is brilliant as Martha. A smart woman who is trapped in a time when women must live out their ambitions through the lives of their husbands and base their self-worth on the success or failures of the men in their lives. Younger has the skill to crawl inside the skin of any character she portrays and wear the flaws like a queen’s crown. Martha is a tragic character, who has had every drop of joy squeezed out of her bloody ripped heart and Younger shows you every shred of her pain. George is a college professor who has had all ambition and self-worth beaten out of him through failure and the relentless verbal kicks

in the head by Martha. Richard Marlow, in his portrayal of George, portrays the shell of what used to be an educated and ambitious man. Marlow’s slow revelation of the sadistic and passive-aggressive person that George has become is mesmerizing, in a sick and twisted kind of way. Both Martha and George are choking on the bitterness of their toxic marriage. Sean Timothy Brown as Nick and Phylicia Mason as Honey, the two unsuspecting visitors in George and Martha’s lair, are like deer in a headlight. I kept wondering how any sane person would not run, screaming out the door within minutes of witnessing the dumpster fire of the older couple’s relationship. At one point, Honey screams out, “Just Stop!”, in the middle of George and Martha’s incessant verbal knife fight and for a moment I thought it was my own thoughts reaching its limits and pushing past my lips. Brown is engaging in his performance as Nick, the pretty young biology professor who fulfills his role as the pawn used to slice another bloody cut in this tragedy and who

BREAKING THE4TH WALL

will no doubt be irrevocably changed after this experience. Mason is wonderful in her limited performance as Honey, described as Nick’s ‘mousy, slim-hipped’ wife, and who seems to be a wasted opportunity in this script. She is shamed by George who berates her when she expresses her lack of interest in having children and spends most of the show in the shadows. Her fatal flaws mostly unexplored in this carnage. Honey and Martha are at opposite ends of the spectrum, yet in alignment with the societal expectation that as women it is their obligation to have children and if they can’t or won’t, then they are failures. While the measure of a man is his career and success, or lack thereof, as demonstrated by George. It sometimes isn’t easy to direct a small cast in a single setting full-length play. Staging can become redundant. Fortunately, the frequency of drink refills in this alcohol sodden drama allowed director Michael Pacas to keep the actors in motion, if only back and forth to the bar. It is not their physical movements, but their psychological sparing that keeps the pace moving forward. Kristen Cunningham’s Set

Design was perfect. A middle-class thread bare living room that aptly reflected the unraveling of the home’s residents. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? had a limited run, ending October 21st. Del Shores’, “Six Characters in search of a Play,” will have a one-night run on October 27th and then Palm Canyon Theatre’s next full production is “Avenue Q,” running November 2-18. Tour Four Modernism Week Featured Homes (throughout the run of the 11 day festival) – Each year Modernism Week offers exclusive tours of Featured Homes. This year, attendees will be able tour four Featured Homes located in Palm Springs (tours occur on different days throughout the 11 days): “Green Gables” by H3K: Designed by Palmer & Krisel and built in 1958, this 3 bedroom 2 bathroom home is undergoing a full renovation by H3K Design. The High Gable roofline is a classic example of midcentury modern design. “La Vie en Rose” by Christopher Kennedy: Interior designer Christopher Kennedy’s spectacular renovation of a quintessential midcentury property. This 1958 home is in posh Vista Las Palmas and backs up to the San Jacinto mountains.

“Axiom Desert House” by Turkel Design: This 2,110-square-foot modern prefab will become home to the Turkel family. Designing their future family home was a way for the founders of Turkel Design to dive deeply into the design, building, and delivery process for prefab homes. “Desert Eichler” by KUD Properties: This newly-built residence is a replica of the original homes designed by Joseph Eichler, but modernized for today’s standard of living. This special evening is presented by Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. Tour the Modernism Week Show House: The Christopher Kennedy Compound – The Christopher Kennedy Compound (in partnership with Traditional Home magazine) is a complete refurbishment of a classic midcentury home in the Indian Canyons neighborhood of Palm Springs that will feature the work of 12 leading interior designers with tours offered daily. Photography Exhibition: The Landscape Architecture Legacy of Dan Kiley – In partnership with UCR Riverside Palm Desert, Modernism Week continues its exploration of landscape architecture and design with the west coast premiere of a photography exhibition highlighting the career of Dan Kiley (1912-2004), one of the nation’s most important post-war landscape architects. During his prolific career, which spanned more than half a century, he worked with equally significant architects including Eero Saarinen, Louis Kahn, and I.M. Pei to create internationally acknowledged Modernist design icons. The exhibition opening on Tuesday, February 19 will be accompanied by a talk and special reception at UCR Palm Desert. Walker Guest House Replica Tour and Paul Rudolf Symposium/Cocktail Reception – Modernism Week participants will be able to tour the 1952 Walker Guest House Replica, a stunning full-scale, furnished replica designed by architect Paul Rudolph, one of America’s leading midcentury architects. It will be situated in downtown Palm Springs across the street

from CAMP. Modernism Week attendees are also invited to a symposium on the life and work of Rudolph. Following the symposium, a limited number of guests may attend an exclusive cocktail reception at the rarely-open-to-the-public Siva/ Russell residence, a 1959 mountainside residence designed by modernist Hugh Kaptur. The Princes of Kings Road – Modernism Week attendees will have the opportunity to attend a fascinating play by Tom Lazarus that dramatizes a real late-life hospital-room encounter between Richard Neutra and his fellow architectural titan Rudolph Schindler. The play’s gentle, ironic humor conveys the different personalities Schindler is a stiff, pompous, conceited, bitter, unapologetic womanizer with a soft heart. Neutra is rosy, conciliatory and playful. Their banter leads the audience to a new understanding of the architectural language of modern design. The Forgotten Frey: The Cree House – One of Albert Frey’s most intact residential works has been meticulously preserved and restored to nearly its original 1955 condition. Never before seen by the public, it has been owned by a single family and has been largely forgotten, as it quietly existed in Cathedral City on its hilltop perch overlooking the desert floor. Tours will be offered daily. A Celebration for Arthur Elrod, Legendary Interior Designer – On Friday, February 15 Modernism Week will host a special dedication ceremony on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars for acclaimed interior designer Arthur Elrod (19241974). Elrod’s work remains relevant today and his style instilled a lasting impression on Palm Springs. His former home known as the “Elrod Escape” will also be open for a home tour and evening cocktail party on Thursday, February 21 with special guest, Palm Springs resident and local icon, Nelda Linsk, an early client and life-long friend of Elrod’s. CHARLES GRACE PRESENTS THE NASHVILLE SONGWRITER SHOWCASE ON SATURDAY, OCTOBER 27

C

harles Grace was born in Anaheim, Ca but spent his formative years living in Myrtle Beach, SC. “I say y’all and I love sweet tea. South Carolina is home,” shared Grace in a recent interview. “I have been living in the desert since April 2018.” I asked him what made him come to the Coachella valley. “Music and family,” shared Grace. “While South Carolina will always be near and dear to my heart, I knew I needed a change of pace. I had just come out of a serious bout of depression, and I was eagerly seeking the next step in my life. I received an opportunity to attend a songwriting retreat up in the Santa Cruz area, and I was confident that this would be the catalyst to the change I was craving. With the help of my family (who live in Coachella Valley), I started making the plans to move. I packed everything I owned in my Nissan Pathfinder and drove across country in four and a half days.” Grace shared his musical background with me. “It’s hard to believe, but I have been pursuing music for over fourteen years now. I come from a family of eclectic music fans who raised me on everything from Elvis Presley to Journey to Boyz II Men. When I was ten years old, I was listening to albums regularly from front to back. It didn’t take long before I developed the itch. I started playing guitar at the age of thirteen and writing songs by the age of fifteen. In

8

2013, I graduated from Coastal Carolina University with a music degree in classical guitar performance and a minor in Spanish. As of 2018, I have written and recorded four albums, and I am working on a fifth.” Grace will be doing a Songwriter Showcase on Saturday, October 27th at The Sturdio (Home of Will Sturgeon) in Palm Desert. Doors open at 6:00 for a pre-show meet and greet. Concert starts at 7:00 p.m. There is a $10 suggested donation to help cover the traveling expenses for the touring artists. “I am really excited to be bringing in three very talented artists from Nashville: Jenny Teator, Meg Williams, and Sheridan Gates. We are going to be performing ‘in the round,’ which means the four of us will be alternating songs and sharing the stories behind them. These house concerts and special for the songwriter and the audience because they offer a unique experience where the avid listener and/or fellow creative can really connect in an intimate setting,” shared Grace. Grace shared the difference in the music scene here and back in SC. “That’s a great question. The biggest difference is the off season. In Myrtle Beach and Charleston for example, summertime is the busiest time of year, which is largely a result of beach tourism and travel destinations. I learned very quickly that is the opposite here in the desert. After Coachella and Stagecoach, this place became a ghost town until mid-October. The ‘pay to play’ shows are much more common out here in Southern California too, which is one of the main reasons so many independent artists and listeners are turning to alternatives such as Sofar Sounds and house concerts such as the one we are putting on this weekend.” Grace shared his musical goals with me. “There are two things at the top of my bucket list. The first is to have one or more of my songs featured in television or film. The other is to open up for one of my heroes

on tour. I would also love to travel abroad and perform for audiences outside the U.S. I have always wanted to visit Europe and South America.” I was curious as to who he would like to open for. “Ooh! I have thought a lot about this. If I could bring somebody back from the dead or go back in time, then I would want to open for Jeff Buckley. He has increasingly become my favorite singer/songwriter. That man’s voice was angelic and his songs are still just as fresh to me today.” Which musicians does he most respect & admire? “The ones I admire the most are not all world renowned. I have a great deal of respect for the musicians who have taste and pay attention to details. I am drawn to those individuals who really have something to say and have a desire to cultivate creative community as opposed to competition. There were so many wonderful people who gave me the platform to hone my craft

growing up, and I am eternally grateful. As far as current artists, it’s a tie between Ray LaMontagne and Glen Hansard. Both of those men have had an immeasurable impact on me and my development as a songwriter and a person.” He went on to share what his songwriting process is like. “It’s never the same. In the past, I would scribble down lyric phrases and sit on them for weeks or months at a time. Lately, I have been harder on myself to either finish the idea or cut it loose. I challenge myself to learn different styles of music too. That’s how I stay sharp and learn new chords or techniques. I love the color in R&B chords, and I draw so much of my compositional tendencies from my classical guitar training. Oftentimes, I will be finger-picking, then hear a melody in the chords I am playing and allow that to determine the direction of the song.” Finally I wanted to know what has been the highlight of his musical career so far? “This one’s tough for me because I always have my head in the clouds looking to what’s next. The experience that left the greatest impression on me was the Judy Stakee Songwriting Retreat that I attended back in April. It happened at such a crucial time when I wasn’t sure if music was going to be a part of my future. Those five days I spent up the sequoias reassured me that music was a gift that I should most definitely continuing pursuing. It brought me so much clarity and confidence as to who I am and how I should move forward. For those reasons, I would have to say that’s the biggest highlight thus far.” The Nashville Songwriter Showcase takes place on Saturday, October 27th at The Sturdio (Home of Will Sturgeon) in Palm Desert. Doors open at 6:00 for a pre-show meet and greet. Concert starts at 7:00 p.m. There is a $10 suggested donation to help cover the traveling expenses for the touring artists. ORMUS - THE MAGICAL ELEMENT

S

tickyfest hasn’t even happened yet and it has brought our attention to some pretty amazing new hard rock bands. One of those bands is ORMUS. Comprised of four desert dwellers, ORMUS, a fictitious group of substances exhibiting many miraculous properties, is tangible and ready to astound audiences with their brand of high energy hard rock. ORMUS will be performing at Stickyfest on November 10, 2018 at The Palms located in Twenty Nine Palms, California with bands Throw the Goat, Sticky Doll, Sleazy Cortez, Brain Vat, Mega Sun, Instigator, The Wastedeads, Generic Response, Drop Mob, KARR, The Dirt Boys, Satanic Johnny and UU. The all-ages event is outdoors and offers free camping. Tickets can be purchased for $12 on-line or $15 at the door. Members of the military and children under 16 with parent receive free admission with identification. You can purchase tickets now at: accelevents.com/events/stickyfest2018. ORMUS is: Martin P. on the unclean and clean vocals, keyboards and tambourine, Chaz M. on guitars, Dave F. on percussion and Serene T. on bass and vocals. Coachella Valley Weekly spoke with the band in preparation for their Halloween shows and Stickyfest. CVW: Can you describe the ORMUS sound in layman’s terms? ORMUS: “Heavy metal with groovy undertones.” SERENE: “I like to think of ORMUS as a good soundtrack for when the world burns.” CVW: ORMUS is undoubtedly heavy music. In many opinions, metal has always maintained a kind of “underground” reputation. How can ORMUS further legitimize hard rock or should bands in this genre be content with the way things are? ORMUS: “Legitimizing a genre as an underground band is a difficult task to tackle. By the time you get to the point where you can have an effect on an entire scene/genre, you’d already be big enough to realize the amount of pull or influence you have.” DAVE: “We feel that we are not currently at the stage in which we are able to have a notable effect on the scene or help legitimize “heavy music” nor do we aim to, as much as we would like to. We currently are in the stage of making ourselves known within the scene and to hopefully get to a place where we can live off of doing what we love; creating and sharing our music with people. As far as the place that “heavy music” currently has in the desert, we realize that we may not be able to compete with bigger city scenes like Los Angeles or San Diego but we are excited to see that the scene here is alive and well, moving and growing.”

CVW: Where can your fans access your music? ORMUS: “Our music, as of today can only be found at reverbenation.com/ormus6 but we will soon be on most major streaming services (Spotify, Apple Music, Google Music, Amazon Music, etc.)” CVW: You call Sky Valley, CA home. How much does the environment impact the music? ORMUS: “Individually, we are from all around the valley, from East to West. ORMUS was born, as it is today, in Thousand Palms. We’re basically in the middle of nowhere, you know. We can be as loud as we want and since the general aesthetic of the valley seems to be pretty bland, we figure why not add some color to it through music.” SERENE: “We formed in Thousand Palms, but we spend our time practicing and recording in the wide open spaces of Sky Valley where the natural ambience flows through, fueling our creativity.” CVW: If you could get on a bill with any 2-3 current metal acts in the desert or beyond, who would they be? ORMUS: “When Tides Turn and Robotic Humans” SERENE: “I like to think big and would love to play a show with Avatar, Jinjer, and Twelve Foot Ninja.” CVW: What are your thoughts on Stickyfest and furthermore, the metal scene in the Coachella Valley/High Desert? ORMUS: “We’re excited about the show and the lineup has a lot of good acts, we don’t really know what to expect except a lot of fun. As far as the low desert is concerned, we feel it’s going well, there’s definitely a lot of talent. Can’t speak to the high desert but we feel like that says enough in and of itself.” SERENE: “Stickydoll is really putting themselves out there to support the local scene and I have faith that Stickyfest will be a hit. I’m proud to be a part of it.” ORMUS is space, death, thrash and speed metal that is unabashed. They were obviously built for the live setting and we look forward to their recordings being available for purchase. If you’re in the area Halloween weekend or can make the trek to Stickyfest don’t miss ORMUS. CONSIDER THIS

H

as there ever been a more adventurous musician than Elvis Costello? He began his career in the mid ‘70s redefining the Punk/New Wave paradigm and subsequently delved into a plethora of musical idioms like Soul, Country, Classical, Jazz, Baroque Pop and Bluegrass. He’s collaborated with everyone from Paul McCartney, Burt Bacharach, the Beastie Boys, George Jones, Tony Bennett, Allen Toussaint, Los Lobos, the Specials, the Pogues, the Roots, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Squeeze, Anne Sofie von Otter and Chet Baker. Plus, he’s played with a Country-Rock Combo, a string quartet, symphony orchestras and his two stellar backing bands, the Attractions and the Imposters. Elvis was born Declan Patrick McManus to Ross and Lillian MacManus in 1954. His dad was a Jazz trumpeter who became the featured vocalist for the Joe Loss Orchestra (kind of England’s answer to Glen Miller). His mother managed a record shop. An obsessive Beatles fan, he began collecting records as a kid. Once he hit puberty, Elvis began writing his own songs. Because he had been exposed to a wide variety of music, early influences included everyone from Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald to the Grateful Dead, Randy Newman and the Band. At age 16 he was half of the Folk duo, Rusty, then three years later he fronted the Pub Rock band Flip City. But by 1976 he struck out on own initially using the moniker D.P. Costello. (Costello was a family name on his mother’s side). The year Punk broke, in 1977, Elvis was making music that straddled Pub Rock and Punk Rock. A new husband and father, he was working as a computer programmer at a cosmetics firm to make ends meet. He acquired a manager, the pugnacious Jake Riviera, who re-christened him Elvis Costello, several months before the King of Rock N’ Roll met his inglorious end perched on his throne. Riviera had also co-founded STIFF Records, which released Great Britain’s first official Punk record from the Damned. Elvis used up his sick days from work to record his debut in under 24 hours. His backing musicians on the sessions was Clover, an American band from the Bay Area that later found fame as Huey Lewis’ News. Entitled My Aim Is True, the record was produced by exBrinsley Schwartz bassist, Nick Lowe. (He went on to produce Elvis’ next five albums). Jake Riviera decided to employ some guerilla tactics to increase his visibility.

NOW” (CONCORD RECORDS) ELVIS COSTELLO & THE IMPOSTERS “LOOK

When CBS (ne’ Sony) Records was holding a convention in London, Elvis showed up with an acoustic guitar and began busking in front of the company’s headquarters. The gamble paid off and he signed with the label. He quickly assembled a backing and band, the Attractions, with Steve Nieve on keys, Bruce Thomas on bass and Pete Thomas (no relation) on drums. Then the four-piece set off to conquer America. In quick succession, they released a series of crackling and loquacious albums that highlighted labyrinthine wordplay and stylish song craft. The band rode the crest of New Wave (a less strident side Of Punk), and their first three records completed Elvis’ “angry young man” phase. By his fourth effort, the Soul-tastic Get Happy, it became apparent he wouldn’t be confined by one musical style or genre. In 1981, Elvis raised the stakes considerably by heading to Nashville with the Attractions to make an honest to goodness Country record. Enlisting producer Billy Sherrill and a wolfpack of traditional Country pickers and players, he cut tracks that were originally hits for George Jones, Patsy Cline, Gram Parsons, Merle Haggard and Hank Williams, Sr. He had thrown down a gauntlet to his fans, inviting them to explore other musical styles with him. It was only the beginning. A year later he released the brilliantly Baroque Imperial Bedroom, which seemed inspired by Cole Porter and the Beatles in equal measure. The following year, Punch The Clock took it’s cues from creamy Philadelphia Soul, adding backing vocalists and a horn section to the mix. It seemed like his musical reach was limitless, King Of America, produced by musician T-Bone Burnett and recorded in 1986, authentically tackled the Country and Folk idioms. Blood And Chocolate, released that same year offered a blistering set of concise Rockers. In 1989 he delivered Spike which featured collaborations with Paul McCartney, The Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Allen Toussaint, the Chieftans and Chrissie Hynde. Two years later, Mighty Like A Rose embraced the elegant Pop craft of ‘60s bands like the Left Banke. In 1993 he collaborated with the Brodsky String Quartet, creating The Juliet Letters, an extravagant song cycle based on imaginary epistles written to Shakespeare’s tragic heroine, “Juliet.” Then he doubled back to the make two records with the Attractions, Brutal Youth and All This Useless Beauty in 1994 and 1996, respectively. As the ‘90s closed he made a brilliant record with buttery ‘60s tunesmith, Burt Bacaharach. The pair had come together to collaborate on a song for director Allison Anders’ Pop music valentine, “Grace Of My Heart.” The result, “God Give Me Strength,” became the catalyst for writing and recording 1998’s Painted From Memory. The year before he was inducted in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, Elvis recorded When I Was Cruel with his new backing band, the Imposters, which featured Steve Nieve, Pete Thomas and new bassist, Davey Faragher. A caustic backto-basics album, it was met with enthusiasm from fans and critics. Naturally, 2003’s North charted an opposite course, offering up a Jazzy set of Sinatra-esque ballads that reflected the dissolution of his second marriage to Pogues

bassist, Cait O’Roarke and his unexpected romance with Jazz chanteuse, Diana Krall. (The pair married in late 2003). The next year saw the release of an Americana effort, The Delivery Man recorded in Clarksdale, Mississippi and an orchestral record, Il Sogno. In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Elvis reconnected with Big Easy legend Allen Toussaint and recorded the Crescent Cityflavored River In Reverse. 2006 was also the year that Elvis and Diana welcomed twin sons, Dexter and Frank. Two years later, as he was adding guitar and vocals to Jenny Lewis’ second solo effort, he felt so inspired that he booked studio time for the Imposters and cranked out his Momofuku album on the spot. 2009 saw the release of Secret, Profane & Sugarcane, a Bluegrass effort that reunited him with best pal and producer T-Bone Burnett. A year later they collaborated again on the elegantly eclectic National Ransom album. Three years later, Elvis was at his most experimental, writing and recording Wise Up Ghost with celebrated Hip-Hop collective The Roots. The record featured new songs as well as some deconstructed and recalibrated Elvis hits from his voluminous back catalogue. An unlikely collaboration, it ended up a spectacular artistic success, garnering positive reviews and managing to debut at #16 on the charts. In the last five years Elvis has continued to tour at a furious pace. In 2015 he wrote an autobiography of sorts; Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink. In the midst of his most recent summer tour he experienced a health scare that forced him off the road for a couple of months. Luckily, he had already recorded a new album, Look Now, his first with the Imposters in 10 years, and his 29th studio album overall. (Untangling Elvis’ entire discography would necessitate a whole separate column, but an informal count of studio, live albums, compilations and soundtracks totals in the mid-40s.) The record opens with an insistent drum beat, thrumming bass lines, pounding piano and peppery horns. “Under Lime” marks one of the few times Elvis has explicitly revisited a character from a previous song. In this case, the protagonist is Jimmie, a ne’er do well musician originally found in “Jimmie Standing In The Rain” on the National Ransom record. Here he’s found some success and is making a showbiz comeback. With a few deft strokes, Elvis’ economical language lets the listener know exactly what Jimmie’s current situation is; “It’s a long way down from the high horse you’re on when you stumble and then you’re

thrown.” Turns out, Jimmie’s become a bit of an entitled prick, fully taking advantage of a young girl assigned to mind him till show time. Although this track was written a couple of years ago, it fits right in with a MeToo narrative, even as a blustery trumpet fanfare, twinkly piano, timpani beats and hearty bah-bah-bah vocals give the melody a Fab Four insouciance. A couple of tracks here, “Unwanted Number” and “Burnt Sugar Is So Bitter” were written over 20 years ago, but never really fit the records he was making at the time. The former, written for Allison Anders’ “Grace Of My Heart,” a film that that limned the experiences Carole King had in the ‘60s as part of a songwriting team and then striking out on her own as a solo Artist/singer-songwriter. Originally written as a Girl Group pastiche and recorded by The R&B trio For Real, the song wed socially conscious lyrics to a lissome Motown-flavored melody. Elvis’ version feels more defiant; the instrumentation, powered by strident piano, a Funk Brothers-style rolling backbeat, elastic bass lines and angular electric guitar. The lyrics navigate the pitfalls that accompany teenage pregnancy with a measure of poignance and grace; “There’s a local game where they whisper my shame, they say ‘He gave her his child, he wouldn’t give her his name’/They will torture me from January to September, and I will give my love to another unwanted number.” Fittingly, the latter was actually cowritten with Carole King. Blending icy keys, a galloping beat, gritty guitar, scratchy bass lines and a blowsy horn section, it splits the difference between ‘80s New Wave and ‘60s Soul. It almost feels like a sequel of sorts to “Unwanted Number,” as the lyrics paint a vivid portrait of a single mom who feels emotionally bankrupt. This neatly turned phrase speaks volumes; “She’s out on her own with the rest of her riches, while the kids paint him out of the refrigerator pictures/She picks up the bill, pays off the babysitter ‘cos everybody knows burnt sugar is so bitter.” A few songs reunite him with Burt Bacharach, typically, the results are magnificent. “Don’t Look Now” is a plaintive piano ballad that is stripped down to just piano, guitar, unichord, bass and a tick-tock drum beat. Elvis is achingly vulnerable as he quietly instructs “Don’t look now, I saw you shoot that glance, I said ‘don’t peek at the sway of my dance, at the length of my cheek’” “Photographs Can Lie” is equally tender. Burt himself sets the mood, with his wistful piano intro. The smooth and supple melody is accented by waspish guitar and a thwoking hi-hat rhythm. Elvis quietly slips into the skin of a disillusioned daughter who discovers her father’s serial infidelities. As she gazes at her parents’ photographs she wonders if she will inherit his wandering spirit. “See him now, know he cheats, Why can’t she see right through him? He used to be more valiant than vain.” continue to page 22

ART SCENE

dysFUNKsion

A

rt is so many things that enrich our lives. Music is an art that can transform us; it can move us; it can inspire us; it can make us happy. dysFUNKsion makes you want to dance! dysFUNKsion is an 8 piece musical team that exudes happiness, disco platforms, New York Swagger and the pedigree to back it all up.. The music spans contemporary to disco to R&B but each song is just good feelings. This is live performance – no lip sync, no guide tracks. It is that element of engaging with the audience that keeps music alive. Why do they do it? dysFUNKsion came together with the common goal to play 100% live music. The husband and wife team of Johnny and Connie Henderson formed dysFUNKsion in 2006 while living in Seattle, Washington. They moved to the desert in April 2016 keen on bringing the sound of dysFUNKsion to the Coachella Valley. Johnny, the bass player and King of Disco Flamboyant, is joined by brother Tim on drums and drummer, vocalists Connie LaClair-Henderson, Desera Charat and Eddie Gee, Keyboardist Paul Phillips, Percussionist Pat Henderson and Guitarist Mike Ruiz. Since coming to the desert the band has played The Palm Desert Country Club, The Hard Rock Cafe, The River Amphitheater, Tradition Country Club, The Club at Morningside and the Spotlight 29. In December they will be on the main stage of the Tamale Festival. The band is available for private functions. How did these talented musicians get together? Love of performing is evident. Love of music goes without saying. Love of life that is most compelling. “dysFUNKsion started when Connie and I were living in Seattle. When we came here the pieces began to fall into place. The depth of talent here is amazing. We were able to bring together a group of talented professional artists from our own backyard,” said Johnny. “We work together as a team. We respect each other’s talent. We share a love of the music we play. While it looks

BY ANGELA ROMEO effortless, as it should, we put in the work. We are always looking to improve the band and ourselves. The hard work is worth it when we see everyone having a great time.” But what about those platform shoes? “I can move and play in them. I cannot move gear but that ok!” laughed Johnny. “Being in that dress is being part of the music that was evolving during the 1970’s.” “We are playing music that takes us back to our youth,” said Desera. “It is hard not to move when you hear this music. From R& B to disco to funk – how can you stand still?” “We engage with our audience,” continued Desera. “Our audience knows the words, or most of the words, to the music we play. It is energizing to hear them sing along and dance to the music.” “Bad Girls is the exception – everyone knows the words to that song! Every one!! I can sing that song every night and every night the reaction is the same! It is iconic and everyone makes it their own!” “When I was recording in Munich, my band recorded in the same studio that Donna Summer recorded that album, “ said desert icon Eddie Gee. “In a way the music dysFUNKsion plays is a lesson in history. For example, the roots of hip-hop can be found in Funk. Every generation builds on the music that came before. We are doing our part to keep not only this music but also live performance alive and well. This is our life and we want to share that exuberance. ” dysFUNKsion may be the new kids on the block but they are 24-karat, ‘nsync talent! Toot toot! Beep beep! KEEP KITTY INSIDE!

S

ome people still think cats are happier if they have the “freedom” to live outside. However, most cat rescue groups will require you to keep the cat you adopt from them indoors. Here are some of the reasons to keep your cat inside, as much as you might think he would enjoy a romp out in the sunshine. 1. Outdoor cats are subject to predators Coyotes are the primary threat to felines in the Coachella Valley, and they are often spotted inside gated communities. Stray dogs can kill a cat, particularly if they are running in packs.

MEET RAFIKI With high energy and personality plus, this sweet 1 ½ year-old boy wants to be the “Canine King” at your house. Rafiki loves adult humans, but prefers to be the only cat. Rescued by www.forevermeow.org, call (760) 335-6767.

MEET OTIS This adorable 11-lb Dachshund mix pup was rescued by lovingallanimals.org from the county shelter. Friendly and engaging, he is just one-yr-old. Call (760) 834-7000 to meet Otis.

2. Risk of Injury or Disease Thousands of cats are killed every year from cars. Other hazards such as barb wire fencing, rodent traps, and poisons can cause grave injury or death. Cats like the sweet taste of anti-freeze, but it is extremely toxic and will result in death. Fleas, ticks and various feline diseases may be transmitted from other cats while Felix wanders the neighborhood. 3. Fights with other Cats Cats are territorial animals, and injuries from cat fights can run up some major veterinary bills. Their territorial battles can

result in abscessed wounds which can be deadly. 4. Malicious Individuals Sad to say, there are people in our community who are cruel and sadistic. With Halloween approaching, cat owners need to be vigilant. 5. Theft Even if they don’t intend to harm your pet, thieves may decide to “adopt” your cat. Tracking them down and proving ownership may be difficult. If your cat is a sought after breed such as Siamese or Persian, thieves steal them to resell. 6. Run Aways We hear incredible tales of cats that travel thousands of miles to return home. But there are also stories of animals who wander off, and their grieving owners never

know their fate. Unneutered Tom cats will wander in search of females in heat. 7. Public Shelters Your friendly cat could be taken in by someone who thinks he’s a stray animal. They might take him to a public shelter where about 80% of the cats are euthanized. 8. Songbird Conservation Cats are predators, and have an instinctual behavior to kill and eat birds and other small wildlife. 9. Neighbor Relations Some of your neighbors might not appreciate a cat defecating and roaming on their property. Ways to keep Kitty Happy Indoors - Cats are perfectly content to sit in the sunshine on a safe window ledge INSIDE your home. You can provide exercise with a supply of toys, a carpet covered cat tree, and a cat scratching post. Get your cat a buddy..... there is nothing more joyful than two cats at play. Here’s the best reason to keep your cat indoors. The average life span of outdoor cats is about five years, while cats that live indoors live an average thirteen to eighteen years. THE VINO VOICE

BY RICK RIOZZA

OH NO!—OH YES!! IT’S THE WALKING DEAD!!

W

ith all of the Halloween themed labels showing up on our wine shelves (and this column has indeed celebrated them these past years, such as Besieged, Apothic Dark, Vampire Vineyards, Poizin Zin, Ravage—you know, the usual scary stuff), there’s no way we can get through yet another All Hallows’ Eve without talking about the hungry & thirsty zombie in the room. “Watch the Dead Rise--Thirsty for Wine” was on almost every other wine enthusiast’s purple stained lips earlier in the year when The Last Wine Company (a partnership between Skybound Entertainment and Treasury Wine Estates) introduced The Walking Dead Wine and Living Wine Labels Apps. As you may already know, these particular apps are “an augmented reality innovation that brings labels to life in compelling ways.” We covered these animated wine label apps previously when writing about the 19 Crimes wine portfolio. Marketing is ruling the wine label waves these days and the action-packed brandart are quickly becoming part of the wine experience. Remember when you ventured to some wine seminar and they instructed you about the “five senses” in wine tasting: “Sight” used to refer solely to admiring the color and depth of the wine; now, vision has expanded with animation! The “Sound” made it in at the “clinking” of glasses—now we hear a story! And who doesn’t wish to join in on the fun! (wine snobs of old— perhaps?) I don’t think bona fide wine snobs are interested much with Halloween-type themed labels. But as far as The Last Wine Company is concerned, they’re interested in garnering business no matter: “Finding new and meaningful ways to connect with consumers is something we care very much about and we think The Walking Dead wine and Living Wine Label Apps are a perfect pairing.” The spokesman continued “We know how enthusiastic fans of The Walking Dead

October 25 to October 31, 2018

can be and we expect they will embrace the Living Wine Labels app and The Walking Dead wines with real excitement,” Further, we are told that the fans of The Walking Dead comic series are loyal and highly involved, with more than 50 million comics in print and digitally, worldwide. The series has millions of followers on social media, and The Walking Dead television program, is the #1 show for ages 18-49, with more than 36 million Facebook followers. You have to admit, the labels on the bottles are market-ably gruesome. It arguably has artistic appeal with its black, white, gray & red layout exhibiting attacking zombies and ghouls. The first tranche of bottles were the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Blood Red Blend. I’m sure you’ll see these bottles at your local Halloween office party, or, strewn about some folk’s front yard on that fateful eve/night. Currently two new varietals with two new labels have been added: the Chardonnay showing a heroine-type brandishing a saber; and the Sauvignon Blanc showing what appears to be a paperboy wielding a knife while caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. I don’t watch the series; these new characters could well be famous in your part of the TV nook. But enough of the labels, let’s talk about the wine. You readers may have already

tasted through the Blood Red Blend and Cab as those labels & bottles are hard to resist. So, let’s discuss the new kids on the butcher block: The Walking Dead Chardonnay is here to stay way beyond Halloween. It’s got the latest Chard profile going for it: the Chardonnay creaminess going on with a nice backbone of acidity. Everybody’s scared, but everybody’s happy. Look for fall flavors of baked apple, peach, caramel, and clove. You wine nerds know that these flavors are often the influence of both American and French oak barrel usage, which goes to show impressive thought in the wine making process. Remember the haters who formed the ABC club—“Anything But Chardonnay”. Well—they better reconsider, for The Walking Dead are coming after them and they’re thirsty for wine. Where the Chardonnay was formidable with their oak barrel use, one can tell that The Walking Dead Sauvignon Blanc was fermented in “chilling” stainless steel tanks. Fans love this process that provides lipsmacking, bright acidic feeling. Cleansing as all get out, should you find Halloween Hollywood blood on your white carpets after your party, this wine will take it out right before your blood-shot eyes. Even better, enjoy this white quaff with all forms of appetizers, salads, picnic fare and light meats. It features notes of key lime, guava, and a hint of fresh pineapple that will leave you refreshed and screeching for more. Now let’s go back to the wines you can sink your teeth into. The Blood Red Blend, as one would expect, drips with intense & bold fruit flavors. The wine opens with an inviting nose of raspberries, cranberry, cherry and melted milk chocolate. A robust wine with notes of ripe mixed berry, mocha and toasted spice which flesh out the structured tannins. The wellintegrated oak offers a warm vanilla note and leads to a long-lasting, seamless finish with balanced acidity. The Cabernet Sauvignon carries aromas of blackberry, nutmeg and mocha spices. It’s perfect for this fall season of bites. This fullbodied wine reveals flavors of dark cherries and currants which pool on the palate, giving way to mocha and spice again. Fine, chocolaty tannins make for a long smooth finish. So, catch all of the action: Load up, launch the app and point at the bottle as the characters break out of the label. When the bottles are side by side, this triggers the combatants to fight each other. Further, the corks are collectible, featuring a variety of images such as barbed wire, a walker hand and an undead head. How much more can we take!!—it’s scary! A Chilling Cheers To You All!

THEPAMPERED PALATE

I

t’s a sensory overload of German delights, cozy mountain chalet ambience and charming service, all at the Alps Village in Palm Desert. For owner Blanka Sanin and her family, their Alps Village restaurant is a labor of love. It is reflected in the entire place, from the wood paneled dining room with quaint décor, to the incredible food, and inviting service, Alps Village is the real deal. With her chef and mother Milka preparing authentic German, and other European fare, a visit to the restaurant will certainly not be your last. My boyfriend and I had actually been meaning to try them out for some time, and to our absolute delight, we finally did. Upon entering, we were greeted by Blanka, with a huge smile, the Yugoslavian natives’ accent added to the restaurants charm. I was drawn to the coziness of the space, it transported us far out of the desert, and into a place that is identical to the restaurants moniker. We could almost feel the cool mountain air. After being seated, my boyfriend ordered one of their German beers, and we set off on our first menu selection of the Pretzel and an order of the Grilled Sausage Platter. Let’s just say, this isn’t any regular Pretzel, first off it was huge, and could easily feed more than a couple of people. The flavor of it was doughy on the inside, encapsulated by a deep bronze outer layer, and lightly sprinkled with large granules of salt. It came with a ramekin of buttery Kajmak cheese spread, which I am now officially addicted to. The Grilled Sausage Platter was a duo of their Smoked Bratwurst, and Numberg, served with house made curry ketchup. Both sausages were delicious, but for me, I was all about the Numberg, which, and I know this may sound strange, tasted angelic. The combo of having the Pretzel and Grilled

GERMAN DELIGHTS AT ALPS VILLAGE

Sausages would have totally been enough for us, but there would be much to come. Blanka proceeded to bring out some of their Stuffed Cabbage rolls, filled with ground beef and rice, wrapped with homemade alpskraut, served in a rich paprika sauce, with mashed potatoes or spaetzel. The cabbage bundles were savory, resting in the paprika sauce. The alpskraut offered a counteractive flavor to the richness, completely balancing the dish. It’s hard to explain, but it had a clean flavor, a description that would be duplicated with every bite of food at Alps Village. Blanka insists on the freshest of ingredients, the food she serves must pass her high quality test before she even allows it in the kitchen. It is that integrity of having the best ingredients, that shines through on every plate. Next was a plate of Jagerschnitzel, which is breaded fried cutlets (pork, chicken or veal) in a rich wild mushroom brown gravy sauce, alpskraut, with spaetzel. The veal culets were tender and the breading soaked up the velvety sauce perfectly. The next dish was similar to the Jagerschnitzel, as it utilized the breaded cutlet, but the sauce and topping for this dish was completely different. The Alps Wiener Schnitzel A La Holstein (pork, chicken or veal) came with a sunny up egg, and a lemon caper sauce. Once punctured, the yolk of the egg gave a luxurious element to lemon caper sauce. We naturally took some of the Ripped Potatoes (lightly boiled, torn fried potatoes) that Blanka

had brought to us, for a little swim in the eggy sauce, which made for a serious yum moment. I have to say that after that last dish, I kind of zoned out…I entered a strange food coma daze, put my pen down and just let it all settle for a moment. When I came to, there was Blanka, with yet another sensational item for us to try, the White Cream Cake. This cake is made with eggs, cream and walnuts, it is flourless. All I can say is, “Oh my goodness!” If you’re partial to a creamy dessert, this one has your number, no doubt. Not overly sweet, the cake is light and airy, a contradiction from the heavy ingredients. I don’t how they do it, but it is magical. In the haste to dive into the cake, I forgot to take a prebite photo, hence the half devoured picture of the cake (sorry). However, the photo does depict the urgency that was employed when indulging in it…yet another yum moment. In addition to all of the wonderful dishes that we tried, the menu at Alps Village extends to many more selections that are definitely on

BY DENISE ORTUNO our radar, from Goulash, to European Pizza’s, to their Alps Burger, with charred onion, muenster cheese, house sauce, lettuce and tomato, and so much more. They also have a full bar, and strategically placed TV’s woven through the restaurant, for those who want a little sports action with their Schnitzel. Happy Hour is offered daily from 11am to 5pm, with 20% off draft beers, wine and selected menu items, like the Pretzel. The Alps Village is one of those finds that you want to kick yourself for not going to sooner. I for one am ecstatic that we made it in, and got to experience all of charm and delightful food that makes them so special. Alps Village is located at 77-734 Country Club Dr. Palm Desert, 92211

SCREENERS

NOW SHOWING: HALLOWEEN (2018)

It’s hard to believe this is the 11th iteration of John Carpenter’s iconic and beloved (yes, beloved) movie and the 9th so-called “sequel” to his much-copied (ripped off?) 1978 original. I was surprised at the sparse attendance at the screening I saw. I couldn’t help but wonder why this familiar film was even made. Other than the potential profits to be harvested, there’s not really anything new here other than a more realistic depiction of the post-trauma damage that resulted from the horrific experience of the 30-year-old assault.

STILL SCARY AFTER 40 YEARS!

Jamie Lee Curtis again inhabits Laurie Strode -- her ninth turn as the character – in what is billed as the true sequel to the vintage slasher favorite. One thing that works here is that no reference is made to any of the other branching cinematic stories that have played off the original during the last four decades. The reboot of the volatile and visceral raw ingredients of the bloody primal tale still provoke the desired jumps and scares. Although there’s no delving into the sick pathology of Michael Meyers (that’s been done), all we know is that he has haunted Laurie since her harrowing escape from his killing binge when she was an innocent (virginal) teen. There’s no question she has been deeply scarred by the murder of her three friends by the masked killer years ago. What we have here is a closer look at

how a person deals with – or the impact of -- such extreme trauma. There’s inescapable contemporary relevance on so many levels if one wants to unpack this clearly intentional and worthy theme. Never doubt a survivor’s story. This time around there are three generations of Strode women committed to confronting Meyers. And boy do they ever! There’s a strong and surprisingly potent emotional element in this telling. Director and co-writer David Gordon Green delivers everything one might expect – especially the satisfying, bloody climax -- from a true sequel to the classic B-movie that became landmark date-movies of the era. Vintage teen horror films of the time usually punished couples -- or mainly girls -- for having sex. Ironically, Carpenter’s eponymous predecessor was said to be a catalyst for couples – or guys -- desiring a little more intimacy later in the evening. If you like the Halloween genre, this one is not to be missed. My hope is that after another 20 years, Jamie Lee Curtis will be up for another chapter in Strode’s story. I want to see a final story set in assisted care facility, but not as a joke. NEW BLU FOR THE HOME THEATER: ANDREI RUBLEV (1966)

Andrei Tarkovsky (1932-1986) was a Russian filmmaker, dramatist, writer and cinema theorist. He made what is arguably among the handful of world cinema’s masterpieces. He said, “I am interested in the theme of the artist’s personality and its relationship to his time. The artist on the strength of his natural sensitivity is the person who perceives his era most profoundly and reflects it most fully.” Tarkovsky’s widely acclaimed masterpiece certainly adheres and exemplifies his artistic theory. The audacious, invented and epic film is neither a truly historical nor biographical account of Russia’s greatest icon painter. In fact, Rublev (1360-1430) is never shown painting his icons, and neither is the actor playing him in every frame. Violent and gory (for a Soviet film), it’s set against the carnage of the Tatar invasion of Russia during the middle ages. It’s a visually dazzling, and very tactile widescreen black and white pageant that presents an otherworldly hero wandering

BY ROBIN E. SIMMONS

across a landscape of “forlorn splendor” observing suffering peasants, hallucinating scripture, working for brutal nobles until, having killed a man during the sack of the city of Vladimir, he takes a vow of silence and gives up painting. Tarkovsky’s remarkable achievement is mostly about visiting and feeling the world in which Rublev lived. It’s an indifferent world reflecting the conflict between austere Christianity and sensual paganism. Imbued with a spirituality that is ever-present in his work, there’s a sense that while we may be on our own, we are never quite alone. The film abounds with memorable images: a cat bounds across a corpse, wild geese flutter over a ravaged city, birch woods alive with water snakes and crawling ants, a decomposing swan on a forest floor, snow falling inside an unfinished church, naked pagans streaming through a thicket during a torch ritual. The opening sequence sets the tone. A boy oversees the clearing away of muddy earth for the forging of a gigantic bell… The boy becomes a man who struggles mightily to maintain his creative and religious integrity. Tarkovsky re-imagines Rublev as a Christlike stand-in for the sufferings of a divided Russia under the Tatar invaders. The generous and expansive extras (including the 205 minute initial theatrical cut) are fitting for the film, its maker and exemplary of Criterion’s very high bar that caters to film buffs. Recommended for the digital home library. Criterion. Blu-ray. ALSO NEW: MAMMA MIA! Here We Go Again (Singalong edition) Three reasons to see and enjoy this feelgood movie: Lily James, Cher and the sun drenched Mediterranean island setting. Universal. Blu-ray.

Dark Corners (Amazon Original Stories) is a collection of short stories by bestselling authors that will give you seven reasons to be afraid of the dark! Hannah-Beast by Jennifer McMahon (49 pages) A lonely girl is tricked rather than treated by her “friends” on Halloween, which immediately becomes a terrible local legend. Still haunted by that horrible night thirty-four years later, one of the girls who is now a wife and mother pays a high price for her sins. The Sleep Tight Motel by Lisa Unger (48 pages) After a woman escapes her boyfriend and bad choices, she finds herself at a remote motel where the kindly proprietor protects her. Each night, she wakes to sounds of a violent fight

in the room next door, but the motel is vacant. There’s a Giant Trapdoor Spider Under Your Bed by Edgar Cantero (24 pages) Sleepovers wouldn’t be as fun if there were no scary stories to tell. But when the stories you tell come to life, and fun turns to fear, it’s wise to be prepared with the appropriate spell. Miao Dao by Joyce Carol Oates (66 pages) When a teen girl’s world slowly comes apart she is powerless to do anything, however her relationship with a feral cat gives her unexpected strength. The Tangled Woods by Emily Raboteau (37 pages) An angry film critic, cynic and snob realizes his dreams have never come true. When he takes a vacation with his family to get away from the world he loathes, he discovers he is part of a bigger nightmare. The Remedy by Adam Haslett (29 pages) Defined by his long-term illness and pain, a man seeks an alternative treatment recommended by a friend that delivers an unexpected cure. Oak Avenue by Brandi Reeds (72 pages) During a restoration of an old home, a woman uncovers secrets about her new close-knit

community that not only affects her, but her husband and baby. Is the project and loneliness making her crazy, or is it the house? I am a big fan of the short story and I enjoyed these Halloween-themed tales, which were specifically written for Amazon. The authors are all seasoned writers and do a good job creating eerie environs, tantalizing twists, and creepy characters. Several of the authors were new to me and I look forward to reading some of their other works. The Dark Corners Collection is published by Amazon and is available free for Prime or Kindle Unlimited subscribers. They can also be purchased separately. Each story comes with an audio file so if you cannot read the story, you

BY HEIDI SIMMONS can at least listen to it. I have often wished I could keep reading while doing mundane, mindless or menial tasks. This is the first time I used the audio feature, and I found it to be a very pleasant experience. Who doesn’t like to be read to? Listening is a great way to keep engaged with the story -- especially when it’s suspenseful! Even better, the software highlights the individual words of the professional reader; so when you jump back to read yourself, you are right where you stopped listening. I love these features. The voice often sounds robotic, but I got use to it and I didn’t mind since I was already involved with the story. If you don’t own a Kindle, no worries, the software is free to download on other devices. Be aware that listening more than doubles the time it takes to read the story. Amazon is changing the world! In fact, it already has, and this format for reading is thrilling.

remember it like it was yesterday. October 26th 2006. Santa Ana winds stirred across the southland. A Red Flag warning had been identified and was in effect. A high probability for large fire growth was in effect as conditions were high temperatures, low humidity, and Santa Ana winds. I was home in Orange County leaving for work in Los Angeles. I could see the large plumb of smoke to the east. In a matter of moments it grew even higher into the sky. The plumb expanded and rose quickly into the atmosphere. In my heart I knew something was bad. I didn’t think it was this bad. Earlier in the morning at 1:11 a.m. resources were dispatched from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) to a reported brush fire at the base of the hill in the town of Cabazon. The first in engine, Engine 24, arrived on scene at 1:18 a.m. Initially, the fire was approximately two acres in size and located on the base of the hillside. At 1:24 a.m., the first arriving Battalion Chief from CAL FIRE reported the fire had grown to approximately ten acres with a rapid rate of spread, and had crossed the road east of the main drainage at a location called “Hallis Grade.” At 1: 43 a.m. Forest Service Engines 51, 52, 54, 56, and 57 were dispatched to the fire. Humidity had dropped to 5% and the heavy chaparral and manzanita were perilously dry. Engine Co. 57 (stationed in San Jacinto/ Idyllwild) along with four other engines were directed to the mountain area of Gorgonio View Road and Wonderview Road to “triage houses.” The four engines encountered people fleeing in vehicles down the highway which added to the chaos. Engine personnel reported the road was obstructed with numerous civilian vehicles, motor homes, horses, and livestock. Due to the traffic congestion, the four fire engines became

separated and Engines 52 and 57 arrived at the staging area first. Engines 52 and 57 followed orders and set up for structure protection. Fire, heat and smoke conditions continued to worsen. With increasing wind, tender dry fuel, the fire began to intensify below quickly advancing up the canyon walls. Enveloped in the heat and smoke, the fire front advances quickly and with intensively. After it passes, attempts to contact Engine 57 went unanswered. At approximately 7:57 a.m., the heat and smoke somewhat diminishes enough for Engine 51 and 52 Captains to work their way into Engine 57’s location to discover the burnover. Sadly the 5 members of Engine 57 perished doing what firefighters do, “protecting lives and property.” Like all firefighters who have sacrificed their lives for others, you are not forgotten… After several days, the Esperanza Fire ultimately consumed approximately 41,173 acres and destroyed 34 residences and 20 outbuildings. The fire also forced the closure of Highway 243. We’re not out of the woods. Fire season is year round, however, Santa Ana Wind season has just begun. It’s going to be a bad season. Very bad! ast time the Red Sox and the Dodgers met in the World Series was 1916 when the Dodgers were referred to as the Robins and Babe Ruth was still a Red Sox. While Trolley-Dodgers was Brooklyn’s nickname, the shortened version was not used formally until 1932. Back in 1916, the typical baseball game took 1:50 on and was played in front of 3,000 people. Within 20 years, the game would take two hours but twice as many people would attend. By the time attendance doubled to 12,000 in 1954, a game was 25% longer at 2:30. It would take until 1987 for attendance to double to 24,000 at which point a game was now a full hour longer than 1918. Attendance peaked in 2007 when 32,700 people would pay to attend a game. Since then, attendance has dropped 12.5% yet game times have continued to rise to an uncomfortably long at 3:05 with many games lasting four or five hours. While game length has grown consistently for decades, television viewership has declined with equal consistently. Using the World Series as the gauge, ratings have averaged approximately 20 million viewers of late which mean that one in five people watching television were watching the World Series. If we go back to the Los Angeles Dodgers’ last appearance in 1988, 35 million people watched or two in five television viewers. While viewership and attendance have

THE FALL CLASSIC

been in decline, revenues for the sport have grown by 50% over the last decade to approximately $9 billion per year. Revenue growth means higher franchise values as well. According to Forbes, the New York Yankees generate the most revenue in baseball at $619 million a year with a franchise valuation of $4 billion - not a bad return for the Steinbrenner family which bought the team for $8.8 million 45 years ago. The Chicago Cubs’ ownership generates the largest profit from their team at $102 million on $457 million in revenues. In general, the average Major League Baseball

DALE GRIBOW ON THE LAW

team generates $315 million in revenues for an annual profit of $29 million with a valuation of more than $1.6 billion. This year’s Fall Classic is a battle between two exceptionally well run franchises. Following 86 years of futility, the Boston Red Sox found success in 2004. Two years earlier, a new ownership group headed by John Henry and Tom Werner bought the team for $380 million. Tom Werner is best known as the executive producer of television shows like The Cosby Show, Roseanne and That 70’s Show as well as his prior ownership of the San Diego Padres while John Henry is an investment manager

who previously owned the Florida Marlins. With three Championships over the last 16 years and a franchise-record 108 wins this year, the Henry/Werner era has been successful and lucrative. Forbes estimates that the Red Sox are currently worth $2.8 billion. The Los Angeles Dodgers faced their own dark years after the O’Malley family sold the team to the Fox Entertainment Group. His name was Frank McCourt and he came from Boston. Under threat of imminent takeover of the team by Major League Baseball, McCourt sold to the current ownership group led by Magic Johnson. Despite driving the Dodgers to the brink of insolvency, McCourt still sold the team for a $1 billion profit at the mind-boggling price of $2 billion. Once Magic Johnson’s team installed their people, the Los Angeles Dodgers won three consecutive division titles and have made the World Series for the last two years. Forbes estimates the Dodgers are currently worth $3 billion at present. By the way, last time the Red Sox and Dodgers met in the World Series, the Red Sox won 4-1. LEGAL REPRESENTATION OF THE INJURED & CRIMINALLY ACCUSED

50% OF ALL CELL CALLS WILL BE FRAUDULENT IN 2019

S

cam calls are epidemic and will get worse in 2019. A new report says that 50% of all cell calls will be fraudulent in 2019. In 2017 almost 4% of mobile calls were fraudulent. In 2018 it is almost 30%. There were 4.1 BILLION Robo phone calls in June 2018. Capital One calls, where a woman claims to be from Capital One Bank to discuss a biz matter, totaled 37 Million calls. Scam Comcast Customer Service accounted for 14 Million calls and 14 Million were allegedly from Wells Fargo. Ironically as cell calls increase, the landline calls are decreased from 56% to a projected 25% next year. This is obviously because fewer people use landlines. As a lawyer I always request landline and mobile call info from DUI and ACCIDENT clients, and I am amazed at home many clients only use a cell. If you read my column regularly you are aware of “Neighborhood Spoofing” where a fraudulent call shows up on the caller ID as coming from a local number.....a number often associated with law enforcement, the courts or IRS. Because of all these calls it is projected

that almost 85% of unknown mobile calls are not answered. This could potentially be a serious problem for legit businesses. One avenue to consider is RoboKiller and Truecaller to help detect and block unwanted calls. Of course they only block known scam numbers. With the election around the corner you might receive phony calls from con artists that pretend to be political volunteers who try to get you to donate money by asking for a cash or credit card number. They may even offer to register you over the phone... which of course is illegal. Because the donation is to a political party or candidate you may never know you have been scammed. The con artist is only interested in getting your credit card info and maxing out your card. When in doubt, don’t give it out! Also be aware of scam calls claiming to be charities or helping veterans. It is suggested you go on line to check out the name of the charity and words like scam or complaint. Go to BBB Wise Giving Alliance, Charity a group that look into the validity of charities. You can also check whether the

charity is registered with The California Charity Regulator. Check NASCO (National Association of State Charity Officials). Always ask for the website of the charity and its address. Inquire about The Charities Mission and what percentage of the money goes to the charity. If it is a veteran charity ask how many service members are helped. Some popular phone scams: IRS, Police, Utility Co, Government Clerk, Jury Duty Clerk, Puppy Breeder, Ticket Seller, Bank Verifier, Big Winner Announcement, Longdistance lover, Military Rep, Social Media Scams, Genealogy site scams. If any of these happen to you, then when you spot a Scam report it to FTC or state charity regulator through nasconet. org. That is the only way to try to protect the next guy. BREWTALITY

M

y friend Devin says her husband started home brewing, and now the house always smells like cereal. At the brewery one day, a beer tender came in to work as I was boiling wort, and announced that the entire building smelled like goldfish crackers. Beer making creates a delicious smell, and I don’t think any beer smells better when you’re cooking it than a New England style IPA, especially when you add those late hops. There really is no wrong way to create this style of beer, despite what people may tell you, and if there’s any beer you’d want to brew as your first all-grain batch, this would be the one. Beer haze is created by protein particles suspended in solution, and some grains have more of these proteins than others. It’s these varieties that you’ll want to include in your recipe. Wheat, oats, event spelt; a combination of these types of grains should be used in tandem with your base malt, which will be barley. The type of base I recommend is Simpsons Golden Promise, if you can’t come across that variety, Maris Otter works almost as well, and good old American Pale Ale will get you by in a pinch. Despite what the internet or your pretentious friends may tell you, there’s no wrong way to brew your own fricken beer. As with most things in life, you’re going to use a bit of math when crafting your own beer recipes, so thank god that the smart phone you’re reading this on has a calculator built into it. I recommend you keep your recipe at about 80-85% of your favorite base malt, and use white or flaked wheat, spelt (a grain closely related to wheat) and/or oats to fill out the remaining 15-20% of your malt bill. I kept my first Hazy IPA simple and went 83% Maris Otter, 9% white wheat, and 8% flaked oats. Now if you’ve never brewed an all-grain batch of beer before, then you don’t know what a lifesaver rice hulls are. Cracked barley will result in the seed being broken into several

he Dodgers are the underdogs again. The Boston Red Sox opened as a slight favorite in this city’s sports books to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series. Oddsmakers at MGM and offshore Book Bovada set the Red Sox as minus -135 favorites in early betting, with the Dodgers made plus115 to win the series. That means a $135 bet on the Red Sox will pay $100, while a $100 bet on the Dodgers pays $115. The odds should come as no surprise to baseball aficionados as the Red Sox were easily the best team in baseball throughout the season, winning an astonishing 108 games. Not only did they defeat their rivals, the New York Yankees (who also won over 100 games), in the ALDS, they dispatched of the reigning World Series Champion Houston Astros in just five games in the ALCS, sweeping the three games on the road in the process. Before the postseason began, oddsmakers had the Astros as heavy favorite to win the World Series and a lot of people believed that Houston was the best overall team in the postseaon. For the Dodgers, the role of dark horse is an unfamiliar one as they were the favorites to return to the World Series before the

chunks, while the hull itself largely remains in one piece, and those hulls create a filter of sorts during the lautering phase of your mash. Lautering is the phase where you separate the liquid from the grain and recirculate it to extract as much sugar as you can during the sparge process. Since neither oats, spelt, or malted wheat have hulls, they don’t contribute to the filter that barley hulls create, and that’s where rice hulls come in handy, as adding them to your mash is the surrogate that’ll keep your mash from clogging and sticking during your lauter. Don’t include it as part of your grain bill ratio, just add a few handfuls to your mash as you steep it. And pro tip, don’t mill your oats. If you’re used them flaked, just throw them whole in your mash tun. You can use rolled oats if you like, but just remember to cook them first to gelatinize the starches before adding them to your mash. Some people prefer the ease of the brewin-a-bag method, and if that’s the way you like to brew, then you don’t have to worry about a sparge. I personally see that method as throwing out the baby with the bath water, as there’s so much residual sugar left in those

grains after you drain your wort out of them. I’ve always enjoyed the full process of all-grain brewing, and that includes the sparging stage. There’s no real trick to it; I remember reading all this debate about fly vs batch sparging, and the bottom line is that you’ve got to keep very warm water sprinkled over the top of your wort so that the grain is never truly exposed. Keep your sparge water around 165 degrees and stop when you’ve collected your full batch of wort, usually about a gallon over what you want your final volume to be. Boiling will evaporate and condense your liquid, and the hops you will be adding will turn a portion of your wort to green sludge that you’ll want to leave behind and not add to your fermenter. Just about every beer style in the world calls for bittering hops as a way to balance and flavor to a brew, but since there is nothing balanced about a NE style IPA, bittering hops are omitted altogether in most recipes. The point of this beer is to create a hop salad that is all dank and no bite, and the hopping schedule reflects it. Instead of the classic “C” hops associated with the West Coast style of IPA, try to get your hands on hops with a more tropical and musky type of

BY AARON RAMSON flavor. Galaxy, Nelson, Azacca, El Dorado, Citra, Simcoe; you’ve got quite a lost to choose from. I chose to add my first hop addition at 15 minutes before flameout, but a lot of brewers will tell you that a giant hop addition at whirlpool is all you really want. The whole point is to extract those hop oils from your flowers or pellets without isomerizing and bittering them through prolonged boiling. Once you’ve got your hopped wort cooled and transferred to your fermentation vessel, it’s time to choose what yeast you send into battle, and this is a very important step. You’ll want a yeast that gives you citrusy, fruity esters to compliment the juicy hop character you’re going for. Wyeast’s London III is the go-to choice for many brewers and is what I used by recommendation. Imperial Organic also makes a strain called Barbarian which is said to be the holy grail of NE IPA yeast strains. “Cali” style yeasts aren’t recommended, as they are a bit too neutral, and tend to dry your beer out. Dry hopping is a huge component in NE IPA, and I recommend you go for a two-stage hopping schedule. A lot of brewers even recommend hopping during the primary phase of fermentation, as this is said to help create more of a haze. In any case, you’ll want to dryhop twice; the first time at least a week before bottling/kegging, and again two days before. This gives you a combination of the grassier flavors associated with prolonged dry hopping, as well as the soft and juicy flavors that come from minimal contact. If you’re serious about having a billowy, turbid appearance to your brew, store your bottles or keg upside down before serving, as to really put the yeast in suspension when you pour your first glass.

BOSOX SLIGHT FAVS OVER DODGERS IN WORLD SERIES & EARLY NBA TIPS..

season began, and in each of their first two postseason series. If the oddsmakers are correct, it would mean the Dodgers would become the first team to lose back-to-back World Series since the Texas Rangers did it in 2010 and 2011. Ironically, the Dodgers were also heavy underdogs the last time they won the title in 1988, when they defeated the 104-win Oakland Athletics in five games, thirty years ago this month. Who you got? For me personally, Boston has been stacked all season and running over the competition. Why should this series be any different? Red Sox in 6 – Book It! G’Luck! Early NBA Betting Tips Tip No. 1: Who’s In? Who’s Out? The NBA is a daily grind for players, and

coaches are constantly juggling their lineups to adapt to opponents and injuries while also trying to keep their key contributors healthy and fresh. Keep a close eye on injury reports and follow beat reporters for the best insight into which players are suiting up and starting that night. Tip No. 2: Pick your spots Due to the demanding schedule of the NBA, situational basketball bettors can find value just about every night. Pay close attention to a team’s calendar and when they run into schedules that have them playing plenty of games in a short span or cross the country on short rest. There are also lookahead and letdown spots aplenty, so weigh the previous matchup as well as the upcoming opponent before pulling the trigger on tonight’s pointspread. Tip No. 3: Streaks and slumps Unlike football, which sees teams in action just once a week, NBA teams play three and four times over the course of seven days, which means bettors should put more weight into current hot streaks and cold skids. And that doesn’t just pertain to teams. Bettors should also dive into which players are lighting it up and which ones a laying bricks over the past few games.

BY FLINT WHEELER

Tip No. 4: Crash the key numbers Much like football, there are some key numbers when it comes to capping the NBA spreads. Games will often be decided by a margin between five and eight points – falling on those numbers almost 26 percent of the time. Seven is the most common gap on the scoreboard while spreads of two and four points are also quite regular. Basketball bettors should pay extra attention to spreads moving off and on these notable numbers. Tip No. 5: Pick out pace When it comes to handicapping NBA totals, pace is probably the first stop. Basketball bettors will want to measure teams by their number of possession and points per possession – using popular NBA stats such as pace – to predict whether the game will be high or low scoring. Two teams with a faster pace will produce more points, while slowerpaced squads should lean towards the Under. Pay close attention to offensive and defensive efficiency as well as turnovers when you have a mismatch in pace on the hardwood.

ELVIS COSTELLO continued from page 10

There’s no real overarching theme to this album, but the best tracks seem to focus on quiet, intimate moments in everyday lives. “Stripping Paper” is particularly eloquent. Lush brass and woodwinds color the edges of the agile melody, as Steve Nieve’s towering piano runs nearly eclipse Elvis’ poignant vocals. Once again, he assumes a feminine point of view, this time, a woman reconsidering her marriage, as she removes wallpaper from an old bedroom. Like an aural pentimento the lyrics recall every nuance; from the first blush of romance; “there in the mess of it all, he took me right there in the thrill, not quite against my will, with my back to that rococo wall,” to the playful comradery of the early days; “he complimented my taste, I anointed his serious face with wallpaper paste, I wish we could laugh like that now.” to the children they raised; “here’s the pencil of a measuring mark, and a monster she spied in the dark.” It’s probably one of his most beautiful and Evocative lyrics, recalling the desolation of “Long Honeymoon” from his Imperial Bedroom album. “I Let The Sun Go Down” takes a more temporal view. Here an ex-military man reflects on the era when England tried to colonize the world. Mournful French horn flutters and wows over a sweeping string section, acoustic and electric guitars and an array of keys. He seems to take it all far too personally as he implores the listener; “Stay awhile, delay the night, I’m too young for twilight, they’d tell the sun to hesitate, that’s when Britain was great/Now the lights are flickering, my pulse is quickening, all over the world lamps will dim and never be seen again.” It’s tempting to think this song was somehow inspired by the Brexit vote in 2016. “Why Won’t Heaven Help Me” is a stylistic 180, that harkens back to a Swinging ‘60s, Bachelor Pad style. Swivel-hipped rhythms connect with wah-wah guitar, tensile bass lines and all manner of keys; Fender Rhodes, Vox Continental organ, plus electric and grand piano. Despite the finger-poppin’ cool arrangement, Elvis is anxiously looking for some divine intervention; “I set off alarms and fire off flares, ‘cos sometimes they answer prayers/I’m listening I wait for a distant bell to ring.” Meanwhile, “Suspect My Tears” maneuvers through an emotional minefield with a Bacharach-fied finesse; a wash of strings pool and eddy around electric guitar, celeste, vibraphone, pianos electric and grand, mellotron, Wurlitzer, pliant bass and a rock

steady beat. Wary of lachrymose displays, he figures two can play that game; “If you hear me weeping I may be cheating or just laughing inside/If you’re suspicious that I’m sly and vicious, here’s your chance to decide, two hypocrites collide.” Other interesting tracks include the fractious “Mr. And Mrs. Hush” and the conversational see-saw of “Dishonor The Stars.” The record closes with a final Bacharach collaboration, “He’s Given Me Things.” Lush instrumentation envelopes this brittle torch song, but all focus is on Elvis’ tender croon as he unfurls an epic monologue meant to assuage an ex-lover’s feelings. Naturally, the language is verbose, but the sentiment veers from kind to cruel; “I’m living up here and you can see me, yes you can look, but you can’t touch/’Cos you don’t belong, the air is thin here, you may asphyxiate my dear.” Whew. This song quietly devastates much like the snarling “I Want You” from his Blood And Chocolate album. The action ends there, unless you pony up the dough for the deluxe edition of Look Now. (Do It). That adds four bonus tracks, the mournful lament of “Isabelle In Tears” which features only Elvis and Steve Nieve. “Adieu Paris (L’Envie Des Etoiles)” is a buoyant and breathless souffle that would fit in nicely in a romantic montage for a sequel to Disney’s “Ratatouille,” (that’s a compliment). “The Final Mrs. Curtain” is a slab of slinky Film Noir, employing the kind of lithe instrumentation that rivals ‘70s era Steely Dan. To paraphrase Katharine Hepburn in “The Philadelphia Story,” it’s pretty fuckin’ yar. Finally, the supplementary disc closes with the gorgeous “You Shouldn’t Look At Me That Way.” The song originally appeared in the breathtaking Annette Bening movie, “Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool.” Here, Elvis manages to capture the romantic frisson of the forbidden May-December between actress Gloria Grahame and her twentysomething paramour. Sweeping and grandiloquent, it closes out this collection in style. Look Now is dense and cinematic, easily his most satisfying album since When I Was Cruel. As always, the Imposters are worthy musical foils. The edition of backing vocalists Kitten Kuroi and Brianna Lee up the ante considerably, providing a sympathetic Greek chorus. Throughout his career, Elvis has consistently followed his muse and charted his own course. Luckily, he always invites us along for the ride.

GRACE AND MERCY T

he beauty and richness of the classic song, Amazing Grace, is endearing and iconic to me. Countless renditions of the song have been performed. It never seems to fail that my eyes well up with tears and my heart sinks every time my ears consume this song. Add bagpipes and you might as well bring on the Kleenex. No matter your religious affiliation, most people are familiar with the song Amazing Grace. The Christian hymn was written by an English poet and clergyman, John Newton and published in 1779. According to Wikipedia, the song is about forgiveness and redemption. Possible regardless of sins committed and that the soul can be delivered from despair through the mercy of God. "Amazing Grace" is one of the most recognizable songs in the English-speaking world. It is also believed that all or most people can identify with the song. Grace means, unmerited, unearned, or undeserved favor. As we reflect on our lives there may have been a time or two, possibly more where you have received grace. Ponder a positive experience in your

life that you could hardly believe happened to or for you. Likely it was grace. Often upon my personal reflections I can attest I have received grace numerous times in my life. Through grace I have learned many of lessons. Reflect upon yours and you may find some hidden treasures within yourself. Grace has religious ties. However, regardless of your beliefs you can be and live in grace. How can you share? Be gracious in your ways. Be truthful and understanding. Be patient. Be gracious with your time to help others. Accept grace. Grace is offered and at your fingertips each day. Grasp it and be accepting to all the possibilities that come with opening your heart and mind. Bookshelves are replete with books about grace. Naturally the Bible will have all you need to learn, know or understand about grace. Desiring a deeper connection or understanding of self is always a challenge. Search and desire to know more about you. This will sure to be a healthy conquest. Grace is not earned. Grace is always accessible. We can thrive in grace. Be gracious.

ARIES (March 21-April 19): In her poem “Shedding Skin,” Harryette Mullen compares her own transformation to the action a snake periodically carries out to renew itself. Since you now have an excellent opportunity to undertake your own molting process, you may find her thoughts helpful. (I’ve rendered them in prose for easier reading.) “Pulling out of the old scarred skin—old rough thing I don’t need now—I strip off, slip out of, leave behind. Shedding toughness, peeling layers down to vulnerable stuff. And I’m blinking off old eyelids for a new way of seeing. By the rock I rub against, I’m going to be tender again.” Halloween costume suggestion: snake sloughing its skin. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): “Only the young and stupid are confident about sex and romance,” says 49-year-old author Elizabeth Gilbert, who has written extensively about those subjects. I agree with her. I’ve devoted myself to studying the mysteries of love for many years, yet still feel like a rookie. Even if you are smarter about these matters than Gilbert and me, Taurus, I urge you to adopt a humble and curious attitude during the next few weeks. The cosmos has prepared some interesting lessons for you, and the best way to take advantage is to be eagerly receptive and open-minded. Halloween costume suggestion: sex researcher, love explorer, intimacy experimenter. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): “My way of learning is to heave a wild and unpredictable monkey-wrench into the machinery,” wrote Gemini author Dashiell Hammett. But I recommend that you use his approach very rarely, and only when other learning methods aren’t working. Most of the time, your best strategy for getting the lessons you need is to put lubricating oil into the machinery, not a monkey-wrench. That’ll be especially true in the coming weeks. I suggest that you turn the machinery off for a while as you add the oil and and do some maintenance. Halloween costume suggestion: repair person; computer techie; machine whisperer. CANCER (June 21-July 22): The great Swedish filmmaker Ingmar Bergman was a Cancerian like you and me. One of the factors contributing to his success was that he put his demons to good use, “by harnessing them to his chariot.” He also testified that he gained control over his demons by taking long walks after breakfast. “Demons don’t like fresh air,” he said. “They prefer it if you stay in bed with cold feet.” I suspect that now would be an excellent time to adopt his advice. Halloween costume suggestion: walk your demon on a leash, or make it into a puppet, or harness it to your chariot. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Throughout the Halloween season, I encourage you to fantasize extensively about what your dream home would look like and feel like if you had all the money necessary to create it. What colors would you paint the walls? Would you have carpets or hardwood floors? What would be your perfect lighting, furniture, and décor? As you gazed out your windows, what views would you see? Would there be nature nearby or urban hotspots? Would you have an office or music room or art studio? Have fun imagining the sanctuary that would bring out the best in you. Halloween costume suggestion: the ultimate homebody. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): “Extraordinary things are always hiding in places people never think to look,” writes novelist Jodi Picoult. That’s crucial for you to meditate on during the coming weeks. Why? Because your superpower is going to be the ability to find extraordinary things that are hiding in places where people have almost never thought to look. You can do both yourself and those you care for a big favor by focusing your intensity on this task. Halloween costume suggestions: sleuth, treasure hunter, private eye, Sherlock Holmes. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): “There is a season for wildness and a season for settledness, and this is neither. This season is about becoming.” Author Shauna Niequist wrote that. In accordance with the astrological omens, I endorse her persepctive as true and useful for you. You’ve zipped through your time of fertile chaos, conjuring up fresh possibilities. When

January arrives, you’ll be ready to work on stability and security. But for now, your assignment is to blossom. Halloween costume suggestions: beautiful creature hatching from an egg; strong sprout cracking out of a seed. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “He believed in magic,” writes author Michael Chabon about a character in his novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. “Not in the so-called magic of candles, pentagrams, and bat wings,” nor “dowsing rods, séances, weeping statues, werewolves, wonders, or miracles.” Then what kind? Chabon says it’s the “impersonal magic of life,” like coincidences and portents that reveal their meanings in retrospect. I bring this to your attention, Scorpio, because now is a favorable time to call on the specific kind of magic that you regard as real and helpful. What kind of magic is that? Halloween costume suggestion: magician, witch, wizard. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): “If adventures will not befall a young lady in her own village, she must seek them abroad.” Sagittarian author Jane Austen wrote that in her novel Northanger Abbey, and now I’m passing her message on to you, slightly altered. My version is, “If adventures will not befall Sagittarian people of any age or gender in their own neighborhood, they must seek them abroad.” And where exactly is “abroad”? The dictionary says it might mean a foreign country, or it could simply mean outside or in another place. I’d like to extend the meaning further to include anywhere outside your known and familiar world. Halloween costume suggestion: traveler on a pilgrimage or explorer on a holy quest. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): PR executives at a beer company offered to pay me a lot of money if I would sneak a product placement ad into your horoscope. They asked me to pretend there was a viable astrological reason to recommend that you imbibe their product in abundance. But the truth is, the actual planetary omens suggest the opposite. You should not in fact be lounging around in a haze of intoxication. You should instead be working hard to drum up support for your labor of love or your favorite cause. Very Important People will be more available to you than usual, and you’ll be wise to seek their input. Halloween costume suggestion: the Ultimate Fundraiser; Networker of the Year; Chief Hobnobber. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): “What kind of idea are you?” asks author Salmon Rushdie. “Are you the kind that compromises, does deals, accommodates itself, aims to find a niche, to survive; or are you the cussed, bloody-minded, ramrod-backed type of damnfool notion that would rather break than sway with the breeze?” I pose this question to you, Aquarius, because I think you could be an effective version of either idea in the coming weeks. If you’re the latter—the cussed, damnfool notion—you may change your world in dramatic ways. Halloween costume suggestions: revolutionary; crusader; agitator; rabble-rouser. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): “There is no beauty without some strangeness,” wrote Edgar Allen Poe. Fashion designer Rei Kawakubo ventured further, declaring, “Strangeness is a necessary ingredient in beauty.” She also added another nuance to her definition: “For something to be beautiful, it doesn’t have to be pretty.” I’ll offer you one more seed for thought: wabi-sabi. It’s a Japanese term that refers to a kind of beauty that’s imperfect, transitory, and incomplete. I bring these clues to your attention, Pisces, because now is an excellent time to refine and clarify your own notion of beauty—and recommit yourself to embodying it. Halloween costume suggestion: the embodiment of your definition of beauty. Homework: What part of you is too tame? How can you inspire it to seek wilder ways of knowing? WANTED: HUMBLE LEADERS

R

ecently I read an article in the Wall Street Journal discussing an important leadership trait. According to the author, Sue Shellenbarger, a work and family columnist, employers are now seeking humility as a desired core quality when hiring leaders. I smiled as I thought back on all the individuals who led the charge during my years in corporate America. Many had stellar leadership capabilities, but none of those fall under the heading of humility. No. Not. A. One. On a certain level, it makes sense. Humble people typically fly under the radar excelling as team players, not cast in the limelight. It appears this new hiring trend is supported by recent evidence suggesting managers lacking humility may be overconfident, take too many risks and ignore the input of others. Humble candidates willingly seek help, thoroughly consider advice and pass on credit to the team. The idea of working for a humble leader intrigued me so I dug deeper. In his book, “Alive at Work: The Neuroscience of Helping Your People Love What They Do,” Daniel H. Cable, professor of organizational behavior at London Business School, touts one of the best ways to motivate your staff is to adopt the mindset of a humble servant. Cable believes servant leaders succeed by “actively seeking the ideas and unique contributions of employees they serve.” By doing this, a culture of learning is created in

an atmosphere encouraging team members to be the best they can be. The humble leader philosophy is further supported by metrics revealed in an article in “Human Resource Executive,” highlighting strong levels of humility produce higher rates of employee engagement, increased job satisfaction and not surprisingly, lower turnover rates. Need to change your managerial strategy and step-up your humility attribute?. What would it take to prove you have this trait? Experts say begin by asking (not telling) how you can help employees do their jobs better. And here’s the real secret sauce. Prove you are earnest by listening. Just a warning, if you’ve never asked and always told employees how to tackle projects, you may not be perceived as sincere. Subordinates will know you’re not just blowing smoke when you begin implementing suggestions and changes made by the team. Think about it, employees who actually do the work often know better than you how to do a stellar job. The bottom line, and I’ll quote Dan Cable on this, “even more important than company results, servant leaders get to act like better human beings.” Now there’s a philosophy worth pursuing!
