Randall Emmett produced 2 GUNS, the top new movie of last weekend. If his name is not yet familiar, it will be. Barely into his 40s, he has, by my count, produced close to 80 films. That’s an incredible achievement -- more movies than Jerry Bruckheimer! And Emmett has four more films that will open before year’s end (among them ESCAPE PLAN and the much anticipated

LONE SURVIVOR). Emmett is a hands-on producer from concept to premier. Besides being a prolific filmmaker, he is also wellliked. That alone is remarkable in the biz. Other producers I know love the art of the deal above the subject of the film. Not so with Emmett – he truly loves film and makes movies he wants to see. Luckily, his cinematic tastes more often than not resonate with the movie-going audience. Randall Emmett and his wife, actor Ambyr Childers have a home in the CV. They have a young daughter and another on the way. Emmett and I spoke by phone while he was between flights crossing the country to promote 2 GUNS, now showing at Cinemas Palme d’Or Robin Simmons: Do you remember the first movie you ever saw in a theater? Randall Emmett: I don’t remember the very fist movie I ever saw in a theater, but I vividly remember seeing WALL STREET,
SCARFACE and THE GOLDFATHER while very young. They had a big impact on me. I remember seeing the movies of the 80s like BREAKFAST CLUB. Robin: You were a movie buff when you were a kid? Randall: I was. We lived in a suburb of Miami. I remember me and my friends dressing up like Wall Street brokers. Suits and suspenders like in the movie. Robin: Movies that took me to another world had the strongest visceral impact when I was a kid… Randall: I couldn’t agree more. Even musicals! I saw the old 42nd STREET when I was growing up. I was blown away by these fantastic worlds that were so far removed from my own real life growing up in a regular suburb of Miami. It definitely transported me and encouraged my creativity. Robin: Someone told me you were a child actor. Randall: When I was maybe seven or eight, I was in a local kids acting group. Later, I got into a school of theater arts and on weekends was making short films with my friends. Whenever I was on commercials or a movie set, I never wanted to leave. There were child labor laws and I had to leave, but for me there was -- and still is -- is a kind of a magic on a set. The trailers, the crews and so on, I just did not want to go home. Robin: I used to tell friends I wanted to live on Warner’s back lot. Randall: Ha. I understand the attraction. I wanted to live on Universal’s (back lot). And Paramount’s back lot and those remnants of the vintage sound stages. It impacted me. When I was a kid, my folks
would laugh and say, “Our son could be an extra on a movie set and be there for 20 hours and still not want to leave.” The place and the process mesmerized me. After high school I went to New York and try another year of acting. Then I worked on a movie as a PA and realized I would never really make it as an actor. I enrolled in the New York’s Tisch School of the Visual Arts and found a love of producing. But I still ask people I know about those “golden days of Hollywood,” I’m still mesmerized. Robin: I worked on the old Columbia Studios and my office was part of Rita Hayworth’s old dressing room. Sometimes I’d still be working late at night, and I’d feel a presence. It gave me chills. Randall: I don’t find that surprising. On old sound stages I too feel something. It permeates the atmosphere. Maybe it’s just a love of movies throughout the ages that remains behind? Robin: Do you remember the first movie you produced? Randall: Oh yes. I did a movie when I was in film school in New York for $24,000. It was called EYES BEYOND SEEING (about an inmate in a mental institution who thinks he’s Jesus and his impact on fellow patients and staff). I was twenty-two. My first Hollywood feature, so to speak, was SPEEDWAY JUNKY. I did it in LA for about $2 million. I was twenty-seven. There was a learning curve and I was new to everything. Both those movies had a tremendous impact on my life and career because it

Summer Getaways: A Girlfriends’ Getaway San Diego
ugust is here, and if the triple-digit temps are putting a damper on spending quality time with your girls, it’s time to head out for a last-minute summer escape. Round up your best gal pals and set your sights on San Diego for this summer getaway for the girls. Best Beachside Stays There’s certainly no shortage of hotel options for a girls’ weekend in San Diego, but two seaside options offer all of the modern luxuries you and the girls could ask for. The well-appointed Omni San Diego is just

Dining All Around Town While you’ll be steps away from the lively nightlife options that overflow from the Gaslamp Quarter, head out to Normal Heights for a range of unpretentious watering holes. Our pick? Sycamore Den
(sycamoreden.com), a Normal Heights newcomer with an old soul. The tavern was designed to recreate a 1970s-style bar where the men of the times would head for their after-work drinks, and the owners of Sycamore Den have encapsulated this nostalgic feel with orange pleather couches, stone walls, wooden accents and a proudly hanging rifle collection. In the bathrooms, you’ll even find a mural of ‘70s-era dads on the walls. While the tavern might sound like a guy’s hangout, women will enjoy the humble atmosphere and specialty cocktails like the Swiss Bank, made with rum, lime, pineapple and a dash of absinthe. Also not to be missed at Sycamore Den? The “Popcorn Program,” whose kernels have earned a cult following for their various flavors. On any given night, you might snack on popcorn topped with Lawry’s Seasoning or nutritional yeast and Mediterranean salt. Depending on which neighborhoods you’re headed to in San Diego, you’ll want to put a few of these restaurants on your must-hit list. First up is Isola Pizza Bar
(isolapizzabar.com) in Little Italy, where local ingredients delivered fresh daily create flavorful pizzas and antipastas. Especially of note is their creamy and fresh burrata mozzarella, served with parma prosciutto, vine-ripened tomatoes and fresh basil pesto. Try it with a glass of their Nino Franco Prosecco as you sit under the sun in the enclosed garden for the perfect start
to your meal. Then it’s time to move on to one of Isola’s famed pizzas. You can’t go wrong by sharing the Salciccia pizza, topped with house-made fennel sausage crumbles, caramelized red onions, crimini mushrooms and mozzarella. Forget the calories for this one and try it with a glass of red barbera d’alba by Pietro Rinaldi, whose Italian winery is owned by the brother of Isola’s owner.
If you’re headed downtown, you can pop into the 1920s-esque Chaplos (chaplos.com) for classic American fare with a vintage twist. The corn, spinach and mushroom-stuffed empanadas and the fresh fish ceviche are both solid choices for starting off your meal, which could include a Mahi-Mahi sandwich or apple ale pork ribs, depending on your mood. Try a selection from the cocktail menu, inspired by San Diego’s most iconic neighborhoods. The Gaslamp Quarter cocktail blends Knob Creek bourbon with amaretto and Benedictine, while the Hillcrest mixes tequila with lime juice, grapefruit juice and spicy blackberry coulis.
In the South Park neighborhood, duck into Alchemy (alchemysandiego.com) for fresh fare that ranges from vegan curry to a whole roasted suckling pig dinner. The modern and creative menu rotates regularly to take advantage of seasonal ingredients, but you’ll always find the beloved quinoa hush puppies on the menu. Other favorites include the Brussels sprouts (sautéed with brown sugar, butter, sunflower seeds and applewood bacon), kimchi fried rice (with pea sprouts, egg, bok choy kimchi and shrimp) and roasted beets with tarragon and goat cheese. The cocktail menu includes handcrafted selections like the Dirty Pickle (vodka and pickle juice) and the Carmen’s Kick, a mix of tequila, lemon, mescal and sweet orgeat syrup. If your girls’ weekend includes a stop at Solano Beach or Del Mar, don’t miss the newest hot spot to open in this beach town just north of San Diego: Sublime Tavern (sublimetavern.net). This is gourmet comfort
food at its finest, including a mac and cheese menu with a handful of grown-up takes on the classic dish. Owner James Limjoco takes his mac and cheese to the next level with varieties like the Ecstasy, which includes a gorgonzola sauce, applewood bacon, mushrooms and red peppers, and the Infatuation, which includes a heavenly combination of mushrooms and truffle oil. The pizzas are taken up a notch too, with the crown jewel being the Get Figgy With It (figs, prosciutto, arugula, parmesan and balsamic glaze). Do your taste buds a solid and start with the Ahi poke tostada or the grass-fed beef tips, and don’t skip out on the impressive selection of local craft beers on tap. San Diego-Style Fun What’s a girls’getaway without wine and spa treatments? Luckily, the Manchester Grand Hyatt has you and your gal pals covered on both fronts. The Kin Spa offers a range of massages, facials and salon services, but you’ll feel especially pampered with the new body wrap rituals. The nourishing 80-minute orange blossom ritual includes an orange blossom mask rich in exfoliating alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), a Fijian hot oil scalp treatment and a warm sugar scrub, while the 80-minute royal coconut milk and honey treatment starts
with a full-body exfoliation, followed by a coconut milk and honey mask, a Fijian scalp treatment and nourishing oil application. Both treatments will leave your skin feeling renewed and refreshed. After your treatment, you’ll have your choice of champagne, white wine or red wine with a cheese plate or fresh fruit. An adults-only outdoor pool and wet and dry saunas tempt you to spend an entire day living it up at the Hyatt’s spa, where freeflowing cookies, juice and other light bites fuel an afternoon of relaxation. You can get a glimpse into the beauty and history of the San Diego Bay aboard a yacht on a Flagship Harbor Tour (sdhe.com). The two-hour tour takes you through both the north and south ends of the bay, or you can opt for a one-hour tour along either the north or south end.
For a drier look at San Diego, hop aboard a trolley and make your way across the city with Old Town Trolley Tours (trolleytours. com/san-diego). This hop-on, hop-off tour hits all of San Diego’s most iconic attractions, including San Diego Harbor, Coronado Island, Horton Plaza and Seaport Village. Speaking of Seaport Village, this seaside shopping plaza is the perfect place to load up on souvenirs and gifts for those back home. Spend a girls’ afternoon browsing the quaint, locally owned shops of this outdoor plaza, where you’ll stumble upon local finds like handmade candles, seashell wind chimes and freshly pressed olive oils and balsamic vinegars. As you and your girlfriends enjoy the ocean breeze while strolling through Seaport Village, you’ll be glad you swapped triple digits for this cool seaside escape.
COVER STORY - Randall Emmett continued from page 3
showed me I could do something. Robin: What drives you to make a movie? Is it the subject? The deal? People attached? Or making big bucks? Randall: (Laughs) I think it’s gotta be the subject matter first. At this point in my career I have to love the material. And then I have to love the actors and the filmmaker. And then of course I have to remove myself a bit and look at it as a business perception. It’s the combination of all these things. But I definitely want to believe in the story I’m telling. Is it really entertaining? Is it based on a true story like LONE SURVIVOR coming
out later this year? There are so many different variables but most of all I have to believe in the movie itself and personally would want to go see this movie as an ordinary filmgoer on the first weekend. I really wanted to see 2 GUNS. I love Denzel – I’d serve him coffee. He’s one of the greats I look up to. And Mark Wahlberg is one of my favorite actors as well. I like to think I’m representative of the general movie-going public. I want to be part of the experience. Robin: I know producers who couldn’t care less about the subject of the movie.
It’s the deal that matters most. Randall: Here’s the thing. At the end of the day, you’re making a movie to be seen. I’m very emotionally connected to the movies I make. I put my heart and soul in it. My hope is that an audience will connect in the same way. Robin: Have you thought about some of this summer’s big budget tent-pole movies that weren’t received with great critical reviews and were also disappointments at the box office? Randall: Yes. Some great stuff and some not so great. The summer’s crowded and I don’t know what went on in the studios. I’m sure they thought about it, but that’s above my pay grade. Ha! Robin: I notice a lot of producers on 2 GUNS. Nineteen or twenty? Randall: They basically helped finance my movie. Robin: Do you have final say on your movies? Randall: It depends on the director. But we usually leave final say to the studio that’s distributing it since we are partners. We had Baltasar Kormákur for 2 GUNS.
He’s so good. But let me say something, even if I have final cut, I’ve never had to enforce it, because for me it’s always been a collaborative effort. When a moves ceases to be a collaborative effort, that’s when problems arise. I always know the tone of the movie and make sure everyone’s on the same page before we start. Randall Emmett talks to Mark Wahlberg on the set of “2 GUNS” Robin: Ever come to blows over creative differences? Randall: I’ve been lucky with excellent relations with my filmmakers. Maybe that will change one day, who knows. But I’ve heard of such stories. Baltasar is directing
EVEREST for me in November. It’s about the tragic Everest expedition in 1996. The Krakauer expedition. We’re shooting in the Italian Alps and Nepal among other places. We’ll do some studio stuff in London. It’s an incredibly dramatic story on the roof of the world. Robin: Where was 2 GUNS shot? Randall: The majority in New Orleans. Some in New Mexico. Robin: Denzel Washington’s long career
is amazing. He retains the good will of the public. Randall: Making this movie with Denzel was such a treat on every level. I learned so much about acting. He’s such a pro. So generous. Robin: Do you get a lot of unsolicited material? Randall: We do. We try to stick with our agency, but I have made movies from unsolicited submissions. We try and read everything we get access too just because you never know where you’ll find a script that may be that gem in the rock. Robin: What’s coming up for you? Randall: I’m excited about LONE SURVIVOR (harrowing true story of SEAL Team 10 and the failed mission to capture or kill a Taliban leader), THE FROZEN GROUND (Nic Cage is an Alaskan State trooper partners with a woman who escaped a serial killer to bring the killer to justice), ESCAPE PLAN (a big action thriller with Stallone and Schwarzenegger). Robin: Any dream projects? Randall: Yes. One of them is happening next year. I never dreamed I’d produce a Martin Scorsese movie. SILENCE is a story he’s been nurturing for decades. In the 17th century two Jesuit priests face violence and persecution when they travel to Japan to locate their mentor and to spread the gospel of Christianity. It’s really about one of the priests questioning his faith -- and God’s silence -- in the face of human suffering.

warning to the reader: The artists presented in the following article are very likely to breach your comfort zone with musical messages that may embarrass the hell out of you just prior to eliciting spontaneous, boisterous laughter. Side effects such as spontaneous hooting and hollering have been known to occur during live performances, as well as the unintentional spitting of adult beverages in mid sip as a result of shock. Should you be the type that is easily offended, still blush during tampon commercials, or are intimidated by beautiful, confident, talented and witty, precocious young women, the following show may not be for you. Please feel free to return to your coin collection, Facebook stalking, Pinterest pinning, or whatever it is that brings you joy, and read no further. As for the rest of you adults, 21 and older, get your happy, fun-lovin’ behinds to The Hood Bar for a night of music and laughter with Delaney & Paris. Their website may say it best when it states, “We are a musical comedy duo from Portland, Oregon. Most of our music is sexually explicit, and we will Double Penetrate your mind lyrically.” After two years of chasing down this sexy dynamic duo of saucy musical satire,

th
Brandon Ray Henderson’s tireless efforts have finally paid off. On the heels of releasing their first album, Cute but Not Nice, these two beautiful, talented ladies are touring California for the first time, starting with Palm Desert’s Hood Bar. Their new, 13 track album, available in hard copy or digital, includes original songs like “Don’t Hate Me for My Vagina”, “F’d in the A”, “Whiskey Dick”, “Get it Up”, and my personal favorite, “I’m Sorry that I Queefed on You”. These two ladies don’t just cross the line of what is “appropriate” or “polite”; they take a battering ram to it. And it is refreshingly hilarious. Delaney explained, “People might look at us differently if we were fat or old. But the fact that guys want to have sex with us, we can say these disgusting things and make them NOT want to have sex with us. Or maybe they want to have sex with us even more... we don’t care. It’s just kind of liberating to get to say whatever we want.” For these entertainers, it’s more about stretching past the invisible boundaries, real and imagined, that put women in tidy boxes with pretty bows. They use their youth, beauty and impeccable skills in sarcasm to enjoy a freedom not all of us can experience in our own lives and professions. Half of the fun of a Delaney & Paris show is that through them, we can enjoy their liberation vicariously and risk free. Delaney lived in Nashville for a few years in her mid-teens, watching her very talented singer/songwriter mother try and navigate her career in the music industry as a country singer. Delaney picked up the guitar at around age 14, and was pretty much selftaught aside from a little help from her mom and brother. For Delaney, becoming a musician was always in her sights, but as to which direction she would take, she was never quite clear. “It was hard watching my mom go through so much pursuing her music,” she shared. “I pretty much knew I wanted a career in music, I just wasn’t sure exactly what do with it. The music industry is just so unpredictable.” She was unsure, that is, until she met Paris. Paris, whose parents met at the community theater, grew up immersed in musical theater. Paris had been writing music in a style fitting for a television show, commercial or musical theater since she was 5 years old. “I never learned how to play an instrument growing up, because I’d give up,” she shared light heartedly. “When Delaney and I met, I had written a song that I wanted to perform for our final in choir at Portland Community College, but I didn’t have an instrument. Delaney offered to write guitar for it, and we’ve been playing
together ever since.” In the early part of their writing together, their songs were a bit tamer. “The first song I brought to Delaney was about how I basically thought men were stupid and boring,” said Paris. “I was just looking for someone to have sex with. Men would try to train me and contain me and make me into their girlfriend, and it was just never going to work. The lyrics go, ‘Tonight what I’ll do, is make sweet, sweet love to you, until I get so bored I want to die.’ Then Delaney came to me with a song called ‘I’ll Shut You Up’, about a guy she was seeing. She didn’t like it when he talked. She just wanted this guy to shut up and have sex with her. We don’t ever really play these songs anymore... our music’s grown so much since then. We were just getting to know each other and going through different things. I had just come out of an abusive relationship when I met Delaney, and the music and her friendship really empowered me.” I asked Paris how her family felt about this considerably brash form of entertainment, asking if they were supportive or offended. “A little bit of both,” she shared. “I was raised to be very open and independent. When I first started writing with Delaney, I was really proud of what we were doing. I played the song ‘I’d Swallow It’ for my mom. She said, ‘Oh – just what I always dreamed of...my little girl singing songs about swallowing cum.’ I said, ‘I know mom! But it’s a really good song!’ They come to shows sometimes. Some of the
lyrics make them a little bit uncomfortable, but they understand that I care about what I’m doing, and that I am passionate about performing and creating art.” This dynamically dicey dose of double trouble could have easily pursued a more traditional music career with their skill set, but together, they have found a niche that is uniquely and brilliantly their own, and have formed a beautiful friendship in the process. You can check out their album, Cute but Not Nice, and purchase their music at www.delaneyandparis.com. You can find all their social media links there as well. Oh, and just one more note: when you come to their show, should you hear someone in the crowd, shout out at the top of their lungs, “My Herpes Hurt!”- don’t be alarmed. More than likely, they are just requesting one of the more popular songs from the new album. A Night in Delaney & Paris starts at 10pm, this Friday night, August 9th at The Hood Bar in Palm Desert. It’s a free show, with local favorites Giselle Woo and Symara Stone opening for the pair with their own, beautiful, musical prowess. This is a guaranteed night of great music and raunchy revelry that you’ll not soon forget.

Desert Road Music Presents Nationally Known Recording Artist, Peter Bradley Adams Schmidy’s Tavern, Palm Desert, Sunday August 11th @ 7pm
S
ome days, I love my job as a feature and music writer more than others. I am approached often, and am sometimes put in the awkward position of having to put off an artist’s or entertainer’s (or God forbid, their mother’s) request for an interview or CD review. I do my best to dissuade them as politely and kindly as possible, as I cannot write what I truly do not believe, and I do not care to be anyone’s critic. But then there are the very cool occasions where I am introduced to an artist that brings me the true joy of discovery; they immediately enhance my music collection, and inspire me to broadcast their talents. This is one such occasion. If the Americana genre suits you, I am absolutely certain that you will fall in love with the music of Peter Bradley Adams’, and you will not want to miss seeing him perform live at Schmidy’s Tavern in Palm Desert this Sunday. Like me, you will become an avid fan of this incredibly skilled yet soft spoken troubadour of contemporary Americana. When Desert Road Music’s founder, Randy Foulds, contacted me about Peter, I proceeded clinically as usual, not sure
what to expect. I had never heard his music before, although, as I researched, it became apparent that hundreds of thousands nationwide have. As I went to the website, music immediately streamed in through my computer speakers. What I heard made me sit up in my chair and take notice, and brought the rest of the household peering over my shoulder to find out who was delivering this incredible music. A warm and gentle voice flooded the room over the skillful cantor of an acoustic guitar: “When my blood runs warm from more red wine, I miss the life that I left behind. But when I hear the sound of the black birds cry, I know I left in the nick of time Well this road I’m on is gonna turn to sand, and leave me lost in a far off land. So let me ride the wind till I don’t look back, and forget the life that I almost had. If I wander till I die, may I know whose hand I’m in. If my home, I never find, then let me live again. The longer I’m in the mess then I find I’m sellin’ my soul for a nickel and dime. Beggin’ my heart to keep singin’ these rhymes, loosin’ again”
Coming from generations of music, Peter can’t remember considering doing anything other than music for his life’s work. He began playing piano at the age of six. Formally trained, he earned his Master’s in Composition at the University of Alabama, and went on to LA where he composed music for film and television. Although, he now hails from Nashville, Peter is not the stereotypical artist one might assume Nashville would produce. “I have nothing really to do with the pop-country, commercial music that it produces,” Peter explains, “My music is definitely not country. Having lived in Nashville for several years now, he shared, “People really don’t know how much other music is coming out of Nashville. It’s a huge singer songwriter forum. It’s an exciting town to be in. To me, Nashville is a thriving alternative music community.” For a little over three years, Peter was part of the duo, Eastmountainsouth, an American pop/rock band formed in 1999 composed of vocalists Kat Maslich-Bode and signed to Dreamworks Records by Robbie Robertson of The Band. Their first self-titled album, that Adams co-produced, received national acclaim. Several songs from the album have been used prominently in film and television. Their version of Stephen Foster’s song “Hard Times (Come Again No More)” was featured on the Elizabethtown motion picture soundtrack. The track “So Are You to Me” was prominently featured on the soundtrack of the movie Lucky 7 and appeared in a Season 3 episode of “Alias”. Their song “You Dance” was featured in a first season episode of the television series One Tree Hill and the song “Ghost” was used in a fifth season episode of Dawson’s Creek. In 2003 the band opened for Lucinda Williams and Nelly Furtado. Currently, Peter is on his fifth solo album. The fifth and newest album, The Mighty Storm, was recorded at Chet Atkins old recording studio, RCA Studio B in Nashville. “I put together my favorite producers and musicians in town, who are also my friends. It was a very collaborative effort.
We recorded it live in the same room. We did overdubs later, but the core of the band was recorded live. I’m really excited about it.” There is no firm release date yet, but it is projected to come out in late fall/early winter of this year. Adams has been featured at Pappy and Harriet’s before, but this will be his first time performing in the Coachella Valley. For this acoustic show, he will be accompanied by Todd Lomardo, a national bass guitar player who also plays with Peter when he performs with his full band. We will be gifted with songs form the new album, as well as from his huge arsenal of music from over the years. You can get a sneak peek into the music from the new album at the following link: youtube.com/ watch?v=L6V960RWYLg The very popular duo from the locally known band Caxton will be leading off the night, with Brett’s skillful guitar and harmonies backing Christina’s gorgeous voice as they bring their own unique musical creations to the event. Tickets to this rare evening of exceptional “un-plugged” music are $10 and can be purchased at desertroad.eventbrite.com/. I suggest purchasing your tickets as soon as possible, as seating is limited in the perfect listening environment Schmidy’s Tavern and their exceptional sound system provide. Full of completely unpredictable melodic and dynamic twists, turns and depths, the life and the music of artists Chris Loung and Ric Chandler, seem to mirror each other. These two artists together, paint with sound much like Picasso painted with a brush and paint - with a depth that is continually revealed and rediscovered with each new listen. Chris Loung’s captivating voice takes you on a cinematic journey in her native French, wherein you eventually forget that the story is being told in a foreign language. two piece mini-orchestra can overwhelm your senses with sound in a powerful way. As their music page describes, “Lung has influences ranging from modern electro to classic rock, coming under unity in cinematic soundscapes, going beyond the stereotypical sound of French popular music.” The self-titled album, released in February of this year, was co-produced by the infamous Scottish/Italian Electro/rock artist RICO, who also worked with popular artists such as Tricky and Gary Numan. The album tells a love story from front to back. As Chris says in her gorgeous French accent, “Everything is about love”. As they shared the story of how their music and their romance evolved, I could easily see where she was coming from. Struggling to find musicians who could collaborate with her love for rock influences in France, Chris Loung traveled to England in hopes of finding like-minded artists she could create with. It was there she met Ric Chandler. “I had been drumming since I was 6,” shared Ric. “With a lot of luck and hard work, I had the good fortune of working with some really great people: Gary Numan, Calvin Harris, Tricky and so many others as a musical director and drummer. When I met Chris, it was perfect. I had just finished working with Calvin, and I was ready to do a project of my own.” When the two met, their musical union was born, soon followed by one that became much more personal. Initially, Chris was hesitant to allow the
passion and energy they had discovered through their music into their personal lives, not wanting to upset the magic of their musical partnership. Ric was obviously quite successful in relieving her anxieties. Initially, Ric and Chris’ project, “Lung” performed as several pieces. But as Chris says, “Life gently pushed us in the direction of making it less complicated.” Lung eventually became just Chris and Ric performing with friends who would occasionally sit in. Meanwhile, being an artist in London was very difficult. “London is a very expensive town,” shared Chris. “You have to work very hard to make a living. We were both teaching – I was teaching French and Rick was teaching drums, and we had very little time to focus on our music. We also started to hate the weather in London,” she laughed. Both Chris and Ric shared a dream of traveling to America. When Ric became the session drummer for Modern English, the English New Wave band best remembered for their song “I Melt with You”, the two were able to realize that dream. Ric was able to obtain a work visa. They literally sold everything they owned in their flat, put everything else in storage, and hopped a plane to Palm Springs. “We love it here,” said Chris. “We love the sun. It was natural for us to come here. We booked a hotel for about 10 days, and then decided to purchase an RV. For us, we were like two kids. It was all new and exciting to us. As a musician, it was a dream come true, to free ourselves and to focus on music...to go on the road.” With their primary roots now here in the desert, the two have traveled throughout America from venue to venue, presenting international musical classics to their audiences, with huge success. “We are happier than ever here in America, concentrating only on our music and traveling constantly.” Ric shared that he plans to bring the band Modern English back to the desert in the fall as he has done once before, providing the desert with the rare opportunity to experience the band in a smaller venue such as The Hood, in Palm Desert. Lung recently shot video for the first single set to be released from their album: A Robin. The single and the video should be available in the fall. Chris had stumbled upon the site for the video purely by accident when she took a wrong turn in Borrego Springs and found herself lost. Suddenly, she looked over and saw the huge dragon sculpture there in the desert. “It ended up being the right road,” she shared. “It had such a strong pull on me, it was almost scary...I had to stop the car.” It was perfect - the word ‘lung’ in Chinese means ‘dragon’, and they were already using the dragon symbol on their album cover. But the magic didn’t stop there. The song, A Robin, is about super-heroes,

Batman and Robin. During the shoot, just when Chris mentioned the word “bat”, a non-choreographed bat flew into the shot! August 17th, we will all have the opportunity to experience the one of a kind musical experience Lung has to offer. Hosted by the Skylark Hotel in Palm Springs, “Some Fabulous Leos” will feature Lung at their annual Leo party. This year, all the benefits will go to CASA, the charity organization that works as advocates to children within the foster care system. Chris and Ric are happy to use their music as a vehicle to help such a cause, and are even considering becoming child advocates for CASA themselves. You can find out more about the event at somefabulousleos.com. You can also follow Chris and Ric and their music on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ lungworld. You will not want to miss the opportunity to meet these two artists and hear their music in person. I assure you, that you will find yourself enchanted by both.
ews anchor Elizabeth Beaubien admits that she was a little different as a child growing up in Tulsa, Okla. While her friends were watching kids shows, “I was already hooked on news when I was a really little,” she said earlier this week on a dinner break between newscasts on the Palm Desert based NBC affiliate. “I didn’t like cartoons but I liked the news shows, and I wanted to be a news anchor when I grew up.” With a few twists over the years, Beaubien has fulfilled her childhood goal. She coanchors the 5, 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts on KMIR with Gino LaMont. Even though she had fallen in love news as a child, by college her path seemed to have changed. Coming from a family of lawyers, as a student at the University of Tulsa, Beaubien was on her way to a law degree when she won a scholarship for an internship at the company of her choice. Beaubien, in her “early 30s,” headed to Seattle for an intern gig at KING 5. “And I got hooked again by the news bug,” she said. Her career took her to Bend, Ore., and the ABC affiliate there. After a couple of years, when the affiliate was bought by the company that also owns KESQ here in the Coachella Valley, Beaubien was transferred to the desert station. It was during her 2004 to 2009 tenure at the station that she fell in love with the valley. “I love the mountains and the weather, except maybe in summer,” she said. “But I love the fact that the valley has a small town feel with all the (amenities) of living in a big city.” During her first time here Beaubien was nominated for several news Emmys and in 2009 won the “On-camera Talent – Anchor” category for her work on the 5 p.m. news. Her anchor work also helped her win another Emmy in 2008 for her on-air work. While her on-air work was getting noticed, Beaubien left the desert while KESQ was in the midst of a newsroom shakeup and landed in northern Louisiana, at Monroe station KNOE. “It was Southern town,” she said. “And it was a lot closer to Oklahoma.”
The desert though wasn’t done with Beaubien. “KMIR wanted me to come back,” she said. “That felt good because I loved working here and wanted to come back.” For a long time, even though she was doing well in her chosen profession, her family tried to get her back on course for a law degree. “They’d say, ‘don’t you want to take the L-SAT?’, but that’s stopped,” she said. “They like seeing me on-air when they come to visit.” At the moment she’s single and “reveling in my singledom,” she said with a laugh. “It’s really easy to travel or leave for the weekend at the moment.” She would like some companionship, in the form of a four-legged friend, but she’s not hurrying the process. “I lost my dog earlier this year and I’d like to get another one in the future. I’ll know the right one when it’s time.” Aside from the area’s proximity to SoCal’s beaches and mountains, living in the desert suits her. “I can walk out my door and go hiking or go to the mountains and go snowboarding which I love,” she said. Along with her work, Beaubien has grown close to two organizations that help others. She’s been to Ecuador twice with the Rancho Mirage-based IMAHelps (formerly International Medical Alliance) to document the organization’s missions to sick and injured men, women and children who have no other access to medical care. She also gives her time to the Parkinson’s Resource Organization. “I learned about PRO when I was doing a story on Jo and Alan Rosen, who founded the organization,” she recalled. “And I became friends with them.” A long-time family friend and an uncle had both suffered with Parkinson’s and Beaubien felt an affinity with the couple who were helping others with fight the debilitating disease. With all the changes in Beaubien’s life since college, there is one thing that she finds interesting and that’s her taste in music. She is, to her own surprise, a country girl at heart. “It was always rock’n’roll when I was a kid,” she said. “I couldn’t stand country, but over the past few years I’ve turned more to country. I guess it’s a way for me to stay close to home.”

hen talking to Elliot Coffman, you can quickly asses he fits the mold of someone who grew up skating and surfing on the beach in Southern California. A Hunting Beach native, he has a very relaxed and laid back demeanor. Once you mention the words “Electronic Dance Music” (EDM) it’s obvious Elliot’s passionate about being a DJ. At the age of 17, Elliot was invited by an older friend in high school to his first rave at the Electric Daisy Carnival. The EDM festival he attended was held in San Bernardino but has recently been relocated to Las Vegas where is continues to grow with the popularity of EDM. It was at this festival his life would change, “It really blew my mind,” remembers Elliot. “I saw some of the best DJs in the world such as; Craze, Planet of the Drums and Carl Cox and decided that was what I wanted to do.” Within one year he had his first pair of turntables and has been spinning ever since. Elliot’s mother is from England which is where Elliot moved not long after graduating from high school. During his 9 month stay in the UK, Elliot was exposed to DJs from around the world furthering his desire to peruse his craft. Upon his return to Orange County, Elliott began a residency at a night club in addition to networking with other DJs and promoters. After a few years of being involved with putting on shows, his collaboration skills would be the inspiration for his entertainment company known as Kollektive Skillz Entertainment. Although he tries to not limit the genre of
music he plays, Elliot admits he is still partial to all styles of Drum and Bass, which is what got him into djing to begin with. Elliot confesses there is a challenge to staying humble while trying to set himself apart musically. He works hard at staying positive and trying to keep his gigs consistent. Having just moved to the Coachella Valley just a few weeks ago, he has already begun to network with other DJs in the Coachella Valley DJ Association. Elliot is in search of other DJs who play EDM, Dubstep, Trap and Drum N Bass. He would like to collaborate with and promote local DJs through an online radio show called Beach City Bass. The program showcases popular DJs from across Southern California and can be heard at: ustream.tv/channel/BeachCityBass If you are interested in collaborating with Elliot, you can reach him by email at: elliotcoffman@gmail.com or on Facebook: Elliot Coffman. wind. The sound was amazingly fat for a simple three piece, much attributed to the skillful guitar styling and melodic bass lines pouring through the amplifiers. The drummer was insanely disciplined yet powerful through his finesse of dynamics and obvious good training. At one point he performed a drum roll during a song that all but hummed as smoothly as a voice. On top of all of this, rang the clear strong vocals of the guitar player, that were being produced from what seemed to be the soles of his feet, up through his heart and out onto the mic. Coupled by a vocal blend with the bass player that is usually only found among siblings, I was completely won. This was a band passionately in love with their craft, having risked everything to be right here, in America, recording at the historic Rancho de la Luna studio and playing for a crowd that truly “got” their music. Red Huxley is Dylan Jones on vocals and guitar, Matthew Pullen on bass and back vocals, and Murray Stephenson on drums. I got to meet this powerful, rock trio from South Africa back stage, and found three of the most gracious future headliners, anyone could ever meet. I asked guitar/ vocalist, Dylan Jones, what their story was. “Last summer, we were lucky enough to go backstage at ‘One Night in Cape Town’ and meet one of our favorite bands of all time - The Eagles of Death Metal. We were listening to a radio interview and they were giving away a chance to meet the band. We called in and won! We had to go for it! We gave the guitarist, Dave Catching, our EPK and a four song EP and asked if he would like to produce our debut album.” Dave told me about meeting these “kids” for the first time: “I don’t let just anybody come to the studio. But they seemed like such a nice group of guys, I said, ‘Sure’, not really expecting to hear from them again. They would have to pull together a lot of money to record on top of travel expenses.” Little did Dave know that the band set out

henever I get a personal nudge from Brandon Ray Henderson, the Live Music Manager/ Promoter for The Hood Bar, I have learned to pay attention. It inevitably and consistently pays off. Such was the case this past month, when he let me know there was a band from South Africa he thought I’d find interesting. It was the end of an insanely exhausting week for me, full of events and day jobs that had literally taken most of what I had in me to get through it. I dragged myself into The Hood thinking I would give this band a quick listen, while enjoying a slice of their famous pizza that was as big as my head, and then quietly sneak off to the bed that was calling my name. When I walked in, Brandon immediately introduced me to Dave Catching, co-owner and founder of The Rancho De La Luna recording studio in Joshua Tree, one of the most influential and historical studios in California, if not the nation. Catching himself, has had his hands all over a lot of incredible music: He has played guitar for well-known hard rock bands Eagles of Death Metal, Queens of the Stone Age, Tex and the Horseheads, The Ringling Sisters, earthlings?, Mondo Generator and the Masters of Reality. He is also a member of Yellow#5, and the Gnarltones. Catching has also been associated with the desert country rock band, Smith & Pyle. He contributed to their debut album It’s OK to be Happy that was recorded at Rancho de la Luna and released in 2008. And this, my friends, is the short list. This night, Dave was at The Hood to spin music from his mind blowing collection of vinyl, while introducing the latest group to record at his historic, desert studio – Red Huxley. When the band came on and played their first song, I knew it was going to be a long night. There was no way I was going to be able to pry myself from this grungy, Dave-Grohl-esque, hard driving, raw music that was infusing me with a thrilling second

immediately to raise the money, determined to make this dream come true. “In need of cold hard capital to get our arses over there, we turned to Kickstarter, the crowdsourcing community. In March 2013, after a series of videos and lots of hard work, we reached our target, and raised the needed $25, 000 (US) that we would need to get over and record.” Once here, at the studio, the band tracked 15 songs, chose eleven of the best of them, and saved four songs for the next project. “This whole experience has been absolutely nuts for us,” said Dylan. Attesting to the magic that seems to come up from the soul of the earth in Joshua Tree and the Rancho Del Luna studio, Dylan shared how he found himself so inspired, he wrote what the band feels is one of the best songs on the album. “I’ve never written that quickly before in my life. Every morning I would wake up and my brain would start singing. I love this place.” Looking toward the future, Dylan said, “Financially we’re going to struggle, but we’re definitely going to make a plan to get out of South Africa, because there’s really no longevity for a rock band there. There’s literally nothing there for us. It’s a serious issue in the country. The radio stations will play a lot of American pop like Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber. They’ll play some indie music, but for rock bands to get on the air, you have to write something real easy and commercial. We’re limited in places to play
in Cape Town and the vicinity. Even if you travel, there’s maybe just two other places to play in the country. We did have our own MTV type channel that showed our music videos at one time. They literally got shut down due to lack of interest. It seems like it is just getting harder and harder to be heard. No one in South Africa is able to do music full time. I’m a waiter. I went to school and became a mechanical engineer, but I quit my job because I really wanted to do this. Mathew works a full time job at a marketing company and Murray is a zoologist. We’re just going to work our asses off, and try and get overseas again as soon as possible. We are just a small independent little South African band, and we’re really hoping this album will help us go places.” The band and their surrounding supporters have done a hell of a job documenting and making the most out of Red Huxley’s adventure to America. You can watch well done videography and photography of what they call, “The Road to Rancho” on their website, redhuxley. com, further immortalizing Dave Catching, the Rancho de la Luna studio and all the other artists who are now part of its unique and magical, musical history. You can also follow Red Huxley on Facebook at facebook. com/redhuxleyband.

Only when we become enlightened as evolving beings of consciousness, and we recognize this enslavement, can we do something about it. This is the critical role of enlightenment—to fully grasp who we are as living, breathing human beings of flesh and blood and infinite soul, and thereby recognize our connection to the divine source of unity consciousness,” asserted Michael Tellinger. n the late ‘70s and early 80s, Los Angeles boasted the most diverse music scene in the country. From the skinny tie Power Pop of the Knack and the Plimsouls, the Punk nihilism of the Adolescents and the Germs, the Punky Roots Rock of X, Los Lobos and the Blasters, the Rockabilly swagger of the Kingbees, the boho jazz flavor of Tom Waits and Rickie Lee Jones and the Hair Metal beginnings of Motley Crue and Guns N’ Roses. In the midst of this symbiotic disharmony rose a music genre wholly organic to L.A., the Paisley Underground. (A term that was coined by Three O’Clock frontman, Michael Quercio.) Paisley Underground was an apt description of a loose confederation of likeminded bands such as Rain Parade, The Bangs (later the Bangles), Dream Syndicate, Green On Red and The Three O’Clock. The common thread between these musicians was a sincere devotion to the Folk and Psychedelic sounds of the mid ‘60s. The chiming vocals and ringing Rickenbacker guitars of the Left Banke and the Byrds, coupled with the Psychedelia of the Seeds and the Count 5. The D.I.Y. aesthetic of Punk Rock made it all possible. The Three O’ Clock formed in 1982. Lead vocalist and bass player Michael Quercio was joined by drummer Danny Benair, guitarist Louis Gutierrez and Mickey Mariano on Keys. Originally they were the Salvation Army, (until they received a “cease and desist” letter from the venerable charity organization). After slipping a demo tape to Rodney Bingenheimer, the influential KROQ DJ tirelessly championed the nascent band. This led to a deal with tiny Frontier Records. The Three O’Clock recorded a debut EP, Baroque Hoedown and quickly followed with a full-length, 16 ambourines. Both efforts were well received. Not only did the Paisley Underground “movement” gain traction, but the band leap-frogged from Frontier to I.R.S. Records.

Although they positioned themselves as an indie, I.R.S. was distributed by A&M Records and owned by Miles Copeland, (the Dick Cheney of band managers, and brother to his biggest client, Stuart Copeland of the Police). I.R.S. served as an incubator for L.A. talent like the Go-Go’s, Oingo Boingo and Wall Of Voodoo and later achieved massive success with R.E.M.’s first 5 records. The Three O’Clock recorded two albums for I.R.S., Arrive Without Travelling in 1985 and Ever After in 1986. Both seemed more slick and less Psychedelic. The band’s final effort, Vermillion was released on Prince’s vanity label, Paisley Park. Overly produced and awash in synthesizers, it completely abandoned their early influences. The Three O’Clock were done by 1988. Quercio would go on to front Permanent Green Light and Jupiter Affect. Gutierrez played in Louis & Clark, Mary’s Danish and Battery Acid. Danny Benair moved to the production side of the industry and Mike Mariano left music entirely. In late 2012, the band’s former manager, John Silva informed the guys that Goldenvoice was inviting the quartet join the Coachella line up for 2013. The band reconvened, (sans Mike Mariano, who was replaced by Adam Merrin from The 88) and 30 years after their heyday, The Three O’Clock was back. The Three O’Clock played a few select dates leading up to Coachella and released a numbered, limited edition “bootleg” live
concert (vinyl-only) LP for Record Store Day. Now the band has released a 20 track compilation that highlights their Frontier days. The Hidden World Revealed features at least eight songs from their first long-player, 16 Tambourines. Four tracks, “Jet Fighter,” “Stupid Einstein,” “Around The World” and “Seeing Is Believing” are the original versions from the LP. “Jet Fighter” is probably The Three O’Clock’s best known song, blending a pulsating big beat, spiraling guitar, lush multi-tracked harmonies, (featuring Quercio’s impossibly fey vocals), and tingle-y keys. “Stupid Einstein” is a perfect pop confection. The melody is cloaked in sundappled acoustic guitar and pensive organ fills. The mood pivots between autumnal and carefree. “Around The World” has a harder edge. Ferocious power chords thrust and parry. A spooky organ solo on the instrumental break ushers the song toward a psychedelic freak-beat conclusion. A well-placed cowbell steadies the beat. “Seeing Is Believing” is a wistful, minor key gem. Layered guitars and harmonies are drenched in shimmering harpsichord. Three 16 Tambourine tracks are alternate takes. “When Lightning Strikes” accents fluffy keys, bubbling bass lines, fuzztone guitar and sweet, love-struck lyrics. “A Day In Erotica” offers up a swirly kaleidoscope of sounds. Powered by a billowy pump organ and candy-coated acoustic guitar, the tune is a roller coaster ride down a rabbit hole of romantic bliss. Finally, the version of “On My Own” adds a string section to the tilt-a-whirl melody. Quercio’s layered vocals are hushed and groovy, they almost succeed in camouflaging his cold-blooded attempt to dump his girlfriend. “Discussing the reasons why I must go, let’s think of the fun and not
the sorrow/ There’s no room for two when I’m on my own.” To long time Three O’Clock fans, the real appeal of Hidden World… is the presence of unreleased material. “All In Good Time” and “In Love Too” were originally available on a long out of print various artists compilation called Radio Tokyo Tapes. On the former a stutter-step beat collides with frantic harpsichord runs, jangly guitar and an ornate string section. In the midst of this maelstrom, the lyrics caution patience! The latter showcases see-saw guitar riffs anchored by a triple-time beat. The Three O’Clock pay homage to their inspirations with two covers. “Lucifer Sam” is a Syd Barrett –era Pink Floyd song that adds plucked guitar chords to this haunted 60s relic. “In My Own Time” reminds listeners that before the Bee Gees were anointed the Kings Of Disco, their aspirations were originally Beatlesque. The ThreeO’Clock take on this tune weds a stopstart rhythm to Who-style guitar reverb. From “Baroque Hoedown” come probably their most perfect song, “With A Cantaloupe Girlfriend,” and the relax-fit rebellion of “I Go Wild.” Other stand-out tracks include “Sound Surrounds,” which is chewy-sticky-sweet in all the best ways. “Why Cream Curdles In Orange Tea,” a meandering early version of “In Love Too.” As well as a demo of “The Girl With The Guitar (Says Oh Yeah).” Here Quecio collaborates with Scott Miller from Game Theory. For Three O’Clock complete-ists they include ephemera like a long-lost commercial for Rodney On The Roq, a Salvation Army demo, “Jennifer Only” and a fan-club-only Christmas song, “Regina Caeli” featuring traditional lyrics in Latin! The Hidden World Revealed jingle jangles to a sweet conclusion with a pitch perfect rendition of the Byrds classic, “Feel A Whole Lot Better.” The first time around seemed like a missed opportunity for the band. Hopefully their Coachella sets introduced them to a whole new generation. Also they should be feeling waves of love and enthusiasm from longtime fans. The time for a NeoPsychedelic-Renaissance is now, and The Three O’Clock is the perfect band to lead the way.

“Oldies For Jesus Concert” to be held at the Spa Resort Hotel
eachOut Ministries, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, is proud to present their “Oldies For Jesus Concert” fund-raising event to add some “Hot Fun in the Summertime!” on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at 7 p.m. This second annual event will be held at the Spa Resort Hotel at the Canyon Center, 100 North Indian Canyon Drive in Palm Springs. Tickets are $8 in advance by calling (760) 567-3562 or $10 at the door. The “Oldies For Jesus Concert” can be described as inspirational, but definitely not “preachy”. Members include: Loretta Ross; Ron Sherwin; Ken and Wanda Finley; Sherman and Deborah Hackett; Renaud “Tuffy”; and Martha Vann, who are all very talented vocalists. They perform “music with a message” through a fast-paced energetic show with costume changes and choreography. The show is great for the entire family and for those needing a little inspiration and laughter; in a lively, fun and relaxed environment. Attendees are invited to dress up in their favorite costumes from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s, and, if they choose to participate, enter the “Best Oldies Outfit Contest” during the event.
Other members of the ReachOut Ministries team have joined the project working behind the scenes, and are dedicated to its success. They help with the staging, coordination, costume changes and make sure the show runs as smoothly as possible. Jacobsway Productions, a sound and lighting team, handle the technical side of the show with ease. The idea for the “Oldies for Jesus Concert” last year, was to be a fund-raising event for the upcoming 11th Annual “Jammin’ For Jesus” Music Fest scheduled for Saturday, January 18, 2014, from 1 until 8 p.m. The festival is held at the Cathedral

City Town Square, 68-700 Avenida Lalo Guerrero in Cathedral City. Every year, there is continuous free live music; free food and soft drinks; free activities for the kids; and free prize give-aways; along with free resource information, literature, and services for the community. Initially, some musically inclined friends were asked to come together for the project by one of the current “Oldies” group members. Their thinking was: “Hey, why not use what everyone loves doing, has already been doing separately, and do it for a good cause?” explains Martha Vann during her telephone interview. “They all agreed, and the ‘Oldies For Jesus Concert’ was born.” They all enjoy performing the music that brings back fond memories and makes people want to sing along and dance! “We did make a few minor changes to the lyrics, but not many, because all the songs in themselves are full of love, joy and happiness.” In the beginning, a local pastor allowed the group to use the church venue, transforming it into a stage, complete with lighting, sound, and makeshift costume changing areas for one night.
The performance was well received by the audience. “People really enjoyed the show and provided wonderful feedback.” The “Oldies For Jesus Concert” continued, including performing songs for two memorial services; one for a group member’s mother, who never had the opportunity to see the show; and then one for another member’s father who passed away two months later. “He was their biggest fan and would dance in the aisle at every show.” They performed on New Year’s Eve at another friend’s church, where the church helped to sell tickets for the fundraising event. The group is involved in prison ministry, street outreach, rehabilitation centers, and community events. They have performed at other venues where the costume changes took place in the restroom. They also performed shows at a few prisons, where the inmates were invited to join in the singing by taking over the lead parts on some of the songs, while the group maintained the back up vocal parts. Not all of their performances brought in funds, however, what started out to be a way to support the “Jammin’ for Jesus” Music Fest, has become an entity in itself. Mark your calendars and plan to attend a very uplifting and fun event for the entire family. See you there!

to bring great wine to the desert, and at the best of prices. (Plus—we both have a great affinity for Italian wine!—which she continues to carry a great selection.) Ironic—I’d been over to the previous Zuni Café many times enjoying Mindy’s cuisine and wine—it’s so easy to just glide off the sidewalk onto her bar—but I hadn’t yet gotten over to Zin. Used to her casual n’ chic (Zuni) Alicante décor, I found Zin American Bistro to be Palm Springs minimalist design but stylish. There’s great outside patio seating for peoplewatching, and, the interior with its understated elegance made me think the meal prices were going to be a good bump-up. But it wasn’t; very similar prices to Alicante with dinner entrées in the $20$30 range. My bad—for not enjoying this place sooner. As reported in the Pampered Palate, we too had heard that Mindy had redone her menu, and, what a great opportunity to match some exciting wine to her new exciting food items! One would think that every vino lover in town would get over here at least a few times a year. It’s such a treat to simply sit down to dine knowing that you can grab at world class wines for such reasonable prices. Why not go to www.pszin.com check out Zin’s list. Simply having a fun time, we paired some of the new cast of menu items along with Mindy’s choices from a great selection of her “Wines by the Glass” list. Enjoying courses such as, “B.C.T.”., which is a play on the classic B.L.T., a salad of crispy pancetta, fresh burrata, heirloom pear tomatoes, arugula, and sorrel vinaigrette; Lemon Crab Cake atop papaya and cucumber slaw, with chile aioli; Pan-Seared Sustainable Sea Bass with black and Fava beans, Jerusalem artichokes, and blood orange brown butter; and, Honey Roasted Half Mary’s Chicken (organic & free-range) with roasted new potatoes, sugar snap peas, and truffle jus. The two chilled white wines that were a seamless match to all of the above plates were: The 2011 Alias Chardonnay, which carries beautiful citrus flavors balance against slightly softer tropical fruit and

ne of the most satisfying things about our wine community is that a savvy woman is at the wine helm over at Alicante and Zin American Bistro. All of you desert foodies know well of Mindy Reed. This multi-tasking epicure plays Owner, Food & Wine Director, and “Somm” at both Palm Springs eateries which strive to provide the freshest ingredients available and go on to creative and inventive cuisine. Our own Pampered Palate covered Zin’s latest menu offerings in our past July 25th/31st issue. And of course we welcome the newly named Alicante (previous Zuni Café) a casual and friendly indoor/outdoor café serving Spanish Mediterranean-inspired cuisine with a large variety of hot and cold tapas. We wine enthusiasts were ecstatic when it was recently announced that Zin American Bistro was awarded their 8th Wine Spectator’ s Award of Excellence for 2013. This major wine award recognizes restaurants whose wine lists offer interesting selections, appropriate to their cuisine, and appeal to a wide range of wine lovers. They consider a list that offers a wellchosen selection of quality producers, along with a thematic match to the menu in both price and style. The first time I met Mindy was in San Diego. A Palm Springs newbie, I was covering a wine trade event where wines from all over the world were being sampled and considered. At the Italian wine seminar I was fortunate to sit next to her. I introduced myself as the local P. S. wine writer and she introduced herself as the owner of two P.S. Restaurants! Was I out-clouted! Anyway—I picked up on her credentials and have always appreciated her quest
honey apricot notes; and, the 2009 Biohf Pratsch Gruner Veltliner [GROO-ner VELTlee-ner] with a nose of grapefruit, peach, stone, and pear. Taste of lime and other citrus notes. The Biohf Gruner was perfect with its nice acidity to complement our crab cake and sea bass. The Alias Chard with all of those citrus flavors really highlighted all of the fancy sauces supporting the meals. Tasty! The Chèvre Burger prepared with Snake River Farms Wagyu beef and American ground beef, Laura Chenel goat cheese, sun dried tomatoes and served with pommes frites, was a dreamy match to a glass of

What a handsome face! Dave is a loving, active 1-year-old male Pit Bull Terrier mix at the Indio shelter , ID#A001362 . You can do a “meet and greet” with Dave at the park next door. This shelter is open 7 days a week for adoptions, 45-355 Van Buren, Indio, (760) 391-4135. Shelter closes August 30.
veterinary staff who performed the surgeries. The Coachella Valley has a serious pet overpopulation problem. Stray animals battle hunger and disease. Pets are found in abandoned homes. Boxes of newborn animals are dumped in fields, and some survive while others succumb to a slow painful death in the heat. Our public shelters are overwhelmed, and many adoptable cats and dogs are euthanized. The situation is heartbreaking for the animals, and expensive for the taxpayers. Kim Hardee, Indio resident and animal advocate, is the organizer behind this event. This happened because one citizen decided to do something about the problem of homeless animals in our community. Kim had a vision for a free spay and neuter clinic in our East Valley, and refused to take “No” for an answer when others were skeptical. She explains, “We have all these unwanted animals, and everyone was talking about the need for free spaying and neutering. Our government can’t solve the problem alone. Why can’t we Indio residents do it and take care of our own animals? My heart breaks every time I see a stray animal. I feel the community needs to take responsibility for these helpless animals. Now that the Indio shelter is closing, the timing seemed right to put this together. We need other businesses and private citizens to join the fight and sponsor a clinic.” Kim is pictured here with Armando Meza and his black Labrador, Nala. Armando just

the young 2011 Chateau Haut Gay, Comtes de Tastes Bordeaux. Matching a Bordeaux to a hamburger—granted, a gourmet hamburger, is one of life’s guilty pleasures. Just do it! And the Veal and Ricotta Meatballs with spaetzle and tomato sauce, are one of the best meatballs plates I’ve ever experienced. I would want this plate every time I’m there. We relished the California Zinfandel Four Vines Maverick from Amador County. Mindy is also a Zin lover and quite often mixes the array of Zinfandel available by the glass. This Four Vines had both classic Zin fruit and acidity to match up with the dish. Food and wine pairing is the real trend about town. Sometimes it gets a bit serious with the attempt to find that “perfect match”. At Zin American Bistro, and at Alicante as well, Mindy sees to it that everyone has a fun time mixing and matching a great variety of plates and vino. Buon Appetito! Salute! were provided to prevent escapes. Some of the dogs pranced around happily, seemingly unaware of the reason for their outing on this mild July 31 morning. The Fantasy Springs Casino hosted and funded a two day free spay and neuter clinic for the pets of low income Indio residents. A low cost vaccine clinic was also provided. This amazing partnership between a private successful business and the nonprofit Animal Action League is a model that hopefully others will copy. The Animal Action League mobile spay unit parked outside the event center concealed a well equipped clinic and
completed a tour in the Marines. While he was away serving his country, family members took care of Nala who had two litters of puppies. When Armando heard about this clinic close to his Indio home, he was in line early with his dog. Armando reports, “This program was great! I want to thank the Fantasy Springs Casino. I can’t thank them enough. You can see by the large turnout what a good thing this was for the community.” Nala wagged her tail in agreement, appearing happy and unfazed after her surgery. Large female dogs like Nala were given priority, because large dogs are the major group being euthanized in shelters. Chris Castling, a College of the Desert student, rescued his puppy Eva, a Rottweiler mix, after she was abandoned in North Palm Springs. Chris recently lost his part time job and lives with his mother who is on disability. Chris stated, “Stray animals are a big problem where I live. Stray dogs are running around. Stray cats are being killed. Animals are being run over by cars. We need more spay and neuter clinics.” Because Chris’ puppy was still a small size he was on stand-by, but the long wait paid off and Eva was the last dog spayed. One Indio resident brought in her male pit bull because her landlord mandated he get neutered. Her option was to move or surrender the dog to a shelter. Neutered male dogs are less aggressive, less likely to run away, less likely to bite, and make better household pets. The woman was given a voucher to return the next day. Rates vary, but it can cost up to $700 to spay a large female dog at the private local vet clinics. It can cost up to $500 to spay a female cat. When people struggle to feed their families, spaying and neutering pets falls behind the priorities of rent and groceries. Most low income people love their pets and want to do the best for them. One unemployed man arrived with his son and their dog at 3:30 am. About 400 people showed up with their pets. There were 56 cats and dogs spayed and neutered at the Fantasy Springs event. Low cost vaccinations were provided to 250 animals. People patiently waited in line for hours to get vouchers for the next day and to sign up for future clinics. For low cost spay and neuter services, call Save A Pet at (760) 251-1400 or Animal Samaritans at (760) 343-3477. Kim Hardee is working with local businesswomen, Diane Dunne and Teri Munselle, to set up more clinics in the East Valley. There will be a nominal fee charged. They are seeking businesses and individuals to help. It costs $2000 to do a one day clinic, and $2800 for a clinic including vaccines. Contact Kim at (760) 250-8181 or kim@iconpresentations.com.

he crowd outside the special events center at the Fantasy Springs Casino swelled. People calmly formed lines, and more kept arriving. It was two days before the Diana Ross concert, but these folks were not concert goers. They were pet owners on a mission to help their beloved cats and dogs. Some people carried dainty little Chihuahuas in carriers. One man brought two female pit bulls who tugged at hand made rope leashes, the dogs appearing to have never been leashed before. of the employees, obviously a great place to work. She mentioned that a new owner took over 2 years ago, Jamie Pinto, a good New York Jewish boy who truly appreciates good food quality. He’s gone to work updating and refurbishing and immediately put in new comfy chairs for the patrons. A brief period of fresh paint is happening next week for 4 days while new carpeting and paint are applied. A new patio area has opened with misters, great outdoor tables with umbrellas and is ‘dog friendly’ for all you pooch owners, bring the kids! Ok, on to the food! I first visited Manhattan’s last spring with my sister and we both had the French Dip with our choice of roast beef, pastrami, or brisket served on a French roll with real au jus. I chose the melt in your mouth brisket which is mile high with fat home-made French fries and chilled coleslaw. Kim pointed out that all of their meats are cured, smoked and roasted on site along with their freshly baked breads, bagels and pastries which are made fresh daily. Their breads include a double rye, and egg bread. There is a dish of homemade dill pickles and pickled tomatoes that are made and grown especially for Manhattans in the Desert. There are 102 different hot and cold deli sandwiches to choose from at Manhattans from traditional sandwiches like

ow can you tell you’ve found a great place to eat? You know you’ve got a winner when the parking lot is always full. I found such a winner at Manhattans in the Desert located at 2665 East Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs. I stopped by last Sunday for my Manhattan’s ‘French dip’ fix and I spoke with their personable General Manager Kim Guzman who exuded enthusiasm as she spoke about the restaurant. Open almost 9 years it still retains the original cooks and 65%

KARAOKE WITH DYNAMIC DAVE fresh or smoked turkey, to rare roast beef, pickled tongue, kosher salami or cold baked meat loaf. Every sandwich is piled high with meat and trimmings. I actually eat only half when I go and take the other half home for an easy dinner. Their portions are hearty and every mouthful a treat. Prices are very reasonable ranging from the avocado- jack for $8.99 to the peppered turkey pastrami for $10.99. There are 6 Manhattan grinders including: Mouth-watering Philly Cheesesteak sandwich served on a hot French roll with sliced ribeye, grilled onion, red and green pepper, and melted provolone cheese for $11.99 or homemade sausage served on a French roll with melted mozzarella cheese $11.99 (you can add grilled onions and peppers if you’d like for $1.99 more) and they include fries and coleslaw. Hot dog lovers can enjoy a selection of 8 different hotdogs topped with trimmings. The Pastrami dog is topped with yellow mustard and pickles and served on a poppy seed bun. A build your own burger or grilled chicken sandwich is offered. You can also get 1/2 a sandwich and soup or salad for $10.99. Did I mention salads? A total of 19 different salad selections are offered. The Manhattan Chef salad features, baked ham, fresh turkey, Swiss and American cheese on a bed of fresh greens topped off with a hard- boiled egg and sliced tomato for $9.99 for 1/2 or $12.99 for a full. Cobb, antipasto, Greek, fresh vegetable salad, Caesar salad and the list goes on to a whitefish salad platter or chopped liver platter, traditional deli fare. For Italian lovers there is a selection of pastas with 25 year old recipes from a couple who formerly had an Italian restaurant and then came to work at Manhattans. Spaghetti and meatballs, Fettuccini Alfredo and homemade ravioli are just a few of the selections. The Pizza is also a favorite and is made in an old style pizza oven. Red and
white sauces and special recipes including the Mama Manhattan’s favorite with mozzarella, fresh garlic, red onion, artichokes and fresh tomato round out the menu. There’s something for everyone! Wait, there’s more! Are you looking for a great breakfast place? You found it! Traditional favorites including Jewish deli scramble is served open face on a toasted fresh bagel and smothered in thinly sliced nova lox is only one of the offerings. Mexicali favorites are also on the menu. You can take your choice of Huevos Rancheros with corn tortillas or Mexican Tortilla scramble. A selection of omelets like the avocado, mushroom, and jack or ‘build your own’ are available along with traditional eggs dishes served with bacon or sausage links and pancakes are also on the menu. Stacks of pancakes, French toast, homemade Danish, smoked fish platters, the list goes on and on. Breakfast is served all day and evening hours and the service is great too! Ok, one more thing I need to mention, desserts!! Kim brought me a piece of their best-selling carrot cake (or should I say practically the whole cake), OMG, it is the best I’ve ever had. The buttercream frosting melts in your mouth along with the moist cake. They have a complete selection of the most scrumptious looking desserts you’ll ever see. 30 different pastries are offered. Don’t miss their éclairs another Manhattans favorite and one of mine too! 7 kinds of cheesecake, 7 layer rum cake, apple strudel, a jumbo brownie, not to mention rice or bread pudding. Cookies, ice cream sundaes and other fountain specialties top it off. Are you hungry yet? Manhattan also caters and makes custom cakes for all occasions, and take-out is available on everything! Manhattans is open Sunday – Thursday, from 7:00AM to 9:00PM. Friday & Saturday, from 7:00AM to 10:00PM. 760-322-3354.

Movie Reviews with Robin E. Simmons
Screeners No. 72
A MODERN GODOT, BAWDY BRITS & OUTRAGEOUS INJUSTICE shimmers on the screen as visual metaphor. Like the characters in Beckett’s play, Alvin and Lance are wandering a wasteland engaged in perhaps pointless, comic banter. Are they in fact dead? And are the few people they meet ghosts? I don’t know, but I really liked this odd and unexpected, subtle comedy that’s fun to watch and think about. Now playing at Cinemas Palme d’Or.

Alvin (Paul Rudd) and Lance (Emile Hirsch) are like a modern Vladimir and Estragon from Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot.” In a literally burned out district of rural Texas, Alvin and Lance slowly paint the broken yellow stripe down the middle of a little used back road all the while ruminating on the vicissitudes of their own rather sad lives. Rudd and Hirsch are skilled performers and they totally get their characters off-putting self-absorbed dimwittedness. Writer director David Gordon Green’s loose adaptation of the Icelandic film EITHER WAY is beautiful to look at, thanks to the precise eye of cinematographer and frequent Green collaborator Tim Orr. The title is never mentioned in the movie and is a puzzle. It came to Green in a dream. Maybe the ambiguity allows for an open interpretation that has no intentional connection. On the surface, this is a simple and slight film with potentially deeper meaning. But it’s up the audience to interpret what

I GIVE IT A YEAR I laughed out loud at much of the forced but wild permutations of this romantic comedy that mixes bawdy humor, abrasive characters and unabashed sentiment. I was reminded of DEATH AT A FUNERAL in tone. The physical comedy saves the day and the central foursome is very attractive as they work out the kinks of lasting relationships. NEW FOR THE HOME THEATER: WEST OF MEMPHIS There have been at least two strong documentaries based on this explosive case of the triple murder of young boys and the three young men wrongfully accused, convicted and imprisoned. Director Amy Berg and filmmakers Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh’s scathing and harrowing examination of the catastrophic fiasco of justice in Arkansas is not for the faint of heart. This mesmerizing documentary exposes the unknown and desperate fight to bring the truth into the open. With the cooperation of some of those
who lived the nightmare (mainly the victims families) and with Berg’s inside look at the investigation, research and appeals as well as the strategies of the defense brings the audience into the case as never before. But most disturbing of all is the film’s shocking revelation of the most likely perpetrator. Don’t miss the real life American horror story that is guaranteed to transfix. It’s not just about the banality of evil, but an eloquent and unflinching look at prosecutorial misconduct. Doing evil under the guise of justice. These bastards knew they had the wrong guys. A great film. Highest recommendation. Sony. Blu-ray. Comments? RobinESimmons@aol.com

TALKING WITH THUNDER LEVIN SHARKNADO SCREENWRITER OPENS UP
HARKNADO has captured our attention with its unashamedly over-the-top title and poster. What makes it all the more entertaining; the selfaware movie is devoid of irony or tonguein-cheek moments. It goes full-throttle for maximum delivery of the absurdist but frankly unsettling “what if” concept with utter seriousness. This week I caught up with screenwriter Thunder Levin. I started our conversation with the most obvious question: ROBIN: OK, first of all, is Levin your real name? THUNDER: Okay, that’s a first! Thank you very much! ROBIN: Have you always wanted to write and make movies? THUNDER: When I was four I wanted to be the guy who drives the back of the hook ‘n ladder fire truck. ROBIN: What is your all time favorite film? THUNDER: The Lord Of The Rings Trilogy, Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of The Lost Ark, Aliens, and Jaws. Oh wait, just one? ROBIN: Are there directors you admire above all others? THUNDER: Steven Spielberg, James Cameron and Ridley Scott.
ROBIN: What was the inspiration for SHARKNADO (other than to sell a screenplay and make a few bucks)? THUNDER: I can’t take credit for the title. It had been floating around for a while. Syfy Channel decided they wanted to make a movie called SHARKNADO and The Asylum -- the company that produces many of the movies for Syfy -- asked me to write it. When I saw the poster and realized the marketing dept. was going to have as much fun with the film as I had writing it, then I thought we just might have something here. ROBIN: Were there any other potential titles you toyed with? THUNDER: GONWE WITH THE WIND. But it was taken. ROBIN: What if any kind of research did you do? Have you seen a real tornado or a live shark in the wild? THUNDER: I think it’s pretty obvious SHARKNADO required extensive research into marine biology, meteorology, and disaster preparedness. I consulted the most prestigious experts available, spent years analyzing shark and tornado behavior and testing out my own theories about survival in crisis situations. SHARKNADO is the ultimate in scientific authenticity. Actually, yes, I have seen a shark in the wild. I’m a lifelong sailor and on a cruise to

Catalina Island we sailed right past a fairly big shark just basking on the surface. Oh, and I’ve snorkeled with Leopard Sharks! ROBIN: How long did it take to write a finished screenplay? THUNDER: The first draft took about a month, and then there were some minor rewrites. ROBIN: Did you write for a specific budget? THUNDER: Yes. Unfortunately it seemed to be a $100 million! Haha! Throughout the development process it was referred to as the “elephant in the room”, that I’d written this huge disaster film that would require flooding Los Angeles and rain in every scene. When I finally met director Anthony Ferrante, after the film was shot, his very first words to me were “I want to punch you!” ROBIN: So, what was the actual working budget? THUNDER: About $1 million. ROBIN: How much of total budget was set-aside for FX? THUNDER: I really don’t have that information. I wasn’t involved in the postproduction process as I was editing my own film, AE: APOCALYPSE EARTH. ROBIN: Who did the gaudy but surprisingly effective FX? THUNDER: The Asylum has its own in-house visual effects department department run by Joseph Lawson, who’s also directed several of their films. ROBIN: Did you have to modify the script to accommodate the budget? THUNDER: I did try to do some final revisions to make it a bit more manageable, but really they went into production with a script that should have cost infinitely more than it did. ROBIN: How do you like the finished film? THUNDER: I think it’s a lot of fun, which is exactly what I was hoping for. ROBIN: Are there scenes you had to
cut? If so, can you say what and why? THUNDER: There was a scene with a Hollywood agent being eaten by a shark that didn’t make it into the final cut of the film. And there was a scene where some of the sharks blown out of the tornado caught fire, so we had flaming flying sharks. That never happened. Unfortunately. ROBIN: Is the final film what you imagined? THUNDER: One of the dangers inherent in writing a film but not directing it is that the finished version never looks just the way you imagined it. You just have to accept the film the way it is. ROBIN: What has been the response to the midnight screenings? The theatrical screenings are coming up, so I don’t know yet. But I’m looking forward to it. It should be fun! ROBIN: Professionally, how has this film hurt or helped your career as a filmmaker or screenwriter? THUNDER: Well there’s no such thing as bad publicity! The attention from SHARKNADO helped me sign with a prestigious agency and they’re generating a lot of meetings for me. So it’s helped hugely. ROBIN: But do people take you less seriously if you have an idea for a more «serious» film? THUNDER: Well, we’re just starting to explore those possibilities so I’ll have to let you know a bit down the road. ROBIN: Are you writing SHARKNADO 2? We’re talking about that now. It would certainly be fun. ROBIN: Do you have a title? THUNDER: Syfy has opened it up to a Twitter contest to pick the title. Personally, I think all the various mash-up titles I’ve seen are funny but ultimately no one is better than the others, so I’d go in a different direction. Since we know it will take place in New York City, I’d call it Sharknado 2: Live On Broadway! ROBIN: So it’s a musical! THUNDER: (silence)

Simple Ways to Build or Fix Your Credit
T
o build credit takes time and represents about 20% of your credit score. Your payment history is the most important factor and represents about 33%. Just doing these basics is half your score. The next 25% relates to how much you owe relative to how much you can borrow. If you have $50,000 in debt and can borrow a maximum of $250,000, that is good versus the person with $25,000 in debt and a maximum of $50,000. Owing money as a mortgage versus a credit line at a department store is better for your credit score as well. To build your credit quickly, run your monthly expenses through credit cards and pay off the balances quickly. Maintain a few credit cards and rotate your spending to each. By doing this, you show that you can borrow from many sources and pay them all back quickly. Additionally, you never want to have outstanding credit card balances that exceed 30% of total availability. Under 10% is ideal. Assuming that your personal or business credit is not the best, you need to start paying all of your bills on time and living

Just like the person who is building credit, rotate your outstanding debt balances while trying to keep borrowings under 30% of what you can borrow. score while doing nothing to build your business’ credit. To build business credit, your business should be a unique entity meaning that it is a limited liability company or corporation. To build credit, register with Dun & Bradstreet for a DUNS number so that all of your credit history is recorded. Your first credit will most likely come from suppliers with credit cards and banks to follow. Two mistakes that most businesses make are not having a business plan and not maintaining accurate financials. Both are critical to building credibility with potential lenders not to mention the importance at helping you to stay focused and on track. By following these simple steps, you will find it easier and less costly to borrow money when you need it.

that are related to drinking and they are funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety. That is why the local police departments can afford to put officers on the street to monitor this and not just misdemeanor and felony crimes. The purpose of these stakeouts is to prevent drivers from driving drunk or being under the influences of drugs. There is technically no such thing as Drunk Driving. The correct title is Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, Drugs or the combined influence of Alcohol and Drugs. You are considered under the influence when your ability to drive is impaired. You are impaired if you blood level is .08 but if you had any kind of drug……..prescriptive or illegal, you can and will be under the influence sooner. If you have multiple convictions for DUI’s then there is a good chance you are on probation. A condition of your probation is that you not drive within 6-8 hours of drinking any alcohol….or a time limit similar to that (every court is slightly different). Thus any alcohol on your breath could potentially violate you. You must also remember that many prescriptive drugs can increase the affect of the alcohol and that is called Potentiation.
We all see warnings on the side of our prescriptions that say “do not operate heavy equipment.” They are not talking about tractors and trailers anymore but rather autos. Why they do not spell that out I do not know. Did you know that the Greater Palm Springs community has the highest number of deaths from DUI’s than any other part of the country…per capita. Thus there is a greater focus here on alcohol related accidents than anywhere in the country. That is why we have regular checkpoints here in the desert. Law enforcement wants to stop not only those who drink and drive but those with NO VALID LICENSE by issuing a 14601 Vehicle Code violation. However it is important to note that a 14601 VC is a misdemeanor and will carry a jail sentence and fines. These stakeouts are funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety by way of the National Highway Traffic Safety

Is That Sunshine You Are Blowing Up My Skirt?
T
hese days I am constantly being asked what is happening in the real estate market. It is a fair question to ask any Coachella Valley real estate broker or agent. In 2005 to 2006 the answer would have been the same from everyone and would have been something like “The market is GREAT! Prices are up, financing is easy (maybe a little too easy?), awesome new homes, plenty of used homes, investment homes, an endless supply of buyers, things just could not be better!” Then in 2008 to 2009 the answer would again be the same from everyone except it would have sounded a little different, more like “The market is horrible! Prices have crashed, the banks don’t want to make loans, REO’s have flooded the market, things could not be worse!”. Today you will get 10 different answers from 10 different brokers or agents. So what is the truth about today’s real estate market? According to the “presstitutes” the recovery of the housing market is practically a done deal. Prices are up, construction is up, new home sales are up, REO’s are practically non-existent, even the number
24
of short sales is down significantly… and they have the graphs and diagrams to prove it! Surely with all of these positive statistics we must be well on the road to recovery, aren’t we? Maybe. Here is what I see when I look out my window. The interest rate has increased approximately one percentage point (from 3.5% to 4.5%) in the past 6 weeks. Home prices have increased approximately 10 to 20 percent in the Coachella Valley for most homes priced under $400,000.00 in the past 120 days. When these two statistics are taken together it means that the cost for the first time homebuyer or even just the average homebuyer who is getting a loan to purchase their home here in the Coachella Valley has increased approximately 33%. How many of us “working class” residents here in the Coachella Valley have received a 33% raise on our wages in the last 4 months? So the bottom line is that many entry level buyers just got priced out of the market and those that a few short months ago could have afforded a better home in a better neighborhood must now settle for less. There has been a noticeable “pause” in the local market as several homes that were previously under contract (mostly failed short sales) are now coming back on the

DUI Drivers… You Are Being Targeted D
id you know that if you had a DUI in the past you are on a “list” with the Riverside County Sheriff Department’s Palm Desert office? We call them the Palm Desert Police Department and they have a Traffic Unit. Yes, big brother has arrived! New patrol cars now have three cameras mounted on top that scan license plates of other vehicles which are run automatically for warrants etc. These traffic units target drivers with multiple convictions or prior arrests with HIGH Blood Alcohol levels. These drivers are then evaluated for their potential risk to the motoring public. Those drivers with the highest risk to public safety are then targeted for surveillance under the Habitual DUI Driver Stakeout Program. The stakeouts are to prevent accidents

market. According to TrendVision (provided to me through our Desert Area Multiple Listing Service) Coachella Valley inventory is slowly creeping back up and many prices are beginning to edge down again. This could be the result of this being the summer where our sales activity traditionally falls off, but maybe not. We’ll just have to wait and see if this trend continues for the next few months. The number of foreclosures resulting in REO’s is still way down and REO’s are no longer a significant factor in our market. In addition, the very aggressive (and now required by law) loan modifications have managed to keep many homeowners previously in default on their mortgages in their homes. This has limited the number of short sales coming on the market and continues to keep new listings of homes for sale in relatively short supply. And finally, I am now seeing a few builders building and successfully selling small housing projects around the valley. Many of the larger developers are getting ready to build new developments as well as buying up the lots in the previously unfinished developments and preparing to start construction on new homes there. While the timing of these larger projects
Administration. That is why Palm Desert Sheriff, and other cities, can afford to have this separate effort to arrest you and protect the greater public. Thus the motto is do not drink and drive. It is cheaper to hire a driver or have a designated driver. Unfortunately all to often the Designated Driver drinks with their friends and are as loaded as those they are supposed to protect. Remember if you get stopped that field sobriety tests at the scene are voluntary as is the breath test at the scene. Just be courteous and explain that you understand them to be voluntary and if that is correct you ELECT not to take them. A breath or blood test at the station would be MANDATORY. If you take a blood test it will take more time for the officer to get someone licensed to draw blood. That is good if you had been drinking over two hours ago. Real estate may still be a year away, they do hold the potential to increase inventory and create more opportunities for Coachella Valley homebuyers. Sunshine? Maybe, we will just have to wait and see. This week’s real estate tip: As a buyer in the current market you can do two things to make homes more affordable. By making a larger down payment you can reduce the amount of your loan. In addition, you can reduce the interest rate on your loan by paying additional cash up front for “loan discount” points. Both methods will lower the amount of your monthly payments! First time homebuyers see Mom and Dad about the possibility of a little help here. Hey there - Give me another Shot! O
kay, now that I have your attention… The truth is, none of us likes getting shots. It is especially frightening and can be uncomfortable for small children (and even us bigger babies!). But getting both yourself and your child properly immunized is an important decision for the safety and welfare of yourself, child or loved ones says Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna. “Vaccinations are essential to decreasing the risks of serious diseases and infections.” “These vaccines not only help keep us safe and healthier, but they also help stop the spread of deadly, preventable diseases Chief DiGiovanna reminds us.” August is National Immunization Awareness Month. Emergency physicians see patients every day who are not appropriately immunized. ACEP recognizes that vaccine-preventable infectious diseases have an effect on the health of adults and children. School is beginning and this is a great time for “all” of us to go get an immunization to avoid certain illnesses.

Week of August 8
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Last year a young Nebraskan entrepreneur changed his name from Tyler Gold to Tyrannosaurus Rex Gold. He said it was a way of giving him greater name recognition as he worked to build his career. Do you have any interest in making a bold move like that, Leo? The coming weeks would be a good time for you to think about adding a new twist to your nickname or title or self-image. But I recommend something less sensationalistic and more in line with the qualities you’d actually like to cultivate in the future. I’m thinking of something like Laughing Tiger or Lucky Lion or Wily Wildcat. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): African-American jazz singer Billie Holiday was the greatgranddaughter of a slave. By the time she was born in 1915, black people in the American South were no longer “owned” by white “masters,” but their predicament was still extreme. Racism was acute and debilitating. Here’s what Billie wrote in her autobiography: “You can be up to your boobies in white satin, with gardenias in your hair and no sugar cane for miles, but you can still be working on a plantation.” Nothing you experience is remotely as oppressive as what Billie experienced, Virgo. But I’m wondering if you might suffer from a milder version of it. Is any part of you oppressed and inhibited even though your outward circumstances are technically unconstrained? If so, now’s the time to push for more freedom. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): What resounding triumphs and subtle transformations have you accomplished since your last birthday? How have you grown and changed? Are there any ways you have dwindled or drooped? The next few weeks will be an excellent time to take inventory of these things. Your own evaluations will be most important, of course. You’ve got to be the ultimate judge of your own character. But you should also solicit the feedback of people you trust. They may be able to help you see clues you’ve missed. If, after weighing all the evidence, you decide you’re pleased with how your life has unfolded these past ten to eleven months, I suggest you celebrate your success. Throw yourself a party or buy yourself a reward or climb to the top of a mountain and unleash a victory cry. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Monmouth Park in New Jersey hosts regular horse races from May through November. During one such event in 2010, a horse named Thewifenoseeverything finished first, just ahead of another nag named Thewifedoesntknow. I suspect that there’ll be a comparable outcome in your life sometime soon. Revelation will trump secrecy. Whoever is hiding information will lose out to anyone who sees and expresses the truth. I advise you to bet on the option that’s forthcoming and communicative, not the one that’s furtive and withholding. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You have both a poetic and a cosmic license to stretch yourself further. It’s best not to go too far, of course. You should stop yourself before you obliterate all boundaries and break all taboos and smash all precedents. But you’ve certainly got the blessings of fate if you seek to disregard some boundaries and shatter some taboos and outgrow some precedents. While you’re at it, you might also want to shed a few pinched expectations and escape an irrelevant limitation or two. It’s time to get as big and brave and brazen as you dare. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): When I was 19, a thug shot me in the butt with a shotgun at close range. To this day, my body contains the 43 pellets he pumped into me. They have caused some minor health problems, and I’m always queasy when I see a gun. But I don’t experience any routine suffering from the wound. Its original impact no longer plagues me. What’s your own personal equivalent of my trauma, Capricorn? A sickness that racked you when you were young? A difficult break-up with your first love? The death of someone you cared about? AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Want to take full advantage of the sexy vibes that are swirling around in your vicinity? One thing you could do is whisper the following provocations in the ear of anyone who would respond well to a dose of boisterous magic: 1) “Corrupt me with your raw purity, baby; beguile me with your raucous honesty.” 2) “I finally figured out that one of the keys to eternal happiness is to be easily amused. Want me to show you how that works?” 3) “I dare you to quench my thirst for spiritual sensuality.” 4) “Let’s trade clothes and pretend we’re each other’s higher selves.” PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Some people put their faith in religion or science or political ideologies. English novelist J.G. Ballard placed his faith elsewhere: in the imagination. “I believe in the power of the imagination to remake the world,” he wrote, “to release the truth within us, to hold back the night, to transcend death, to charm motorways, to ingratiate ourselves with birds, to enlist the confidences of madmen.” As you make your adjustments and reconfigure your plans, Pisces, I suggest you put your faith where Ballard did. Your imagination is far more potent and dynamic than you realize -- especially right now. ARIES (March 21-April 19): “You have to participate relentlessly in the manifestation of your own blessings,” says author Elizabeth Gilbert. I recommend that you experiment with this subversive idea, Aries. Just for a week, see what happens if you devote yourself to making yourself feel really good. I mean risk going to extremes as you pursue happiness with focused zeal. Try this: Draw up a list of experiences that you know will give you intense pleasure, and indulge in them all without apology. And please don’t fret about the possible consequences of getting crazed with joy. Be assured that the cosmos is providing you with more slack than usual. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): “I am not washed and beautiful, in control of a shining world in which everything fits,” writes Taurus author Annie Dillard, “but instead am wandering awed about on a splintered wreck I’ve come to care for, whose gnawed trees breathe a delicate air.” I recommend you try on her perspective for size. For now, just forget about scrambling after perfection. At least temporarily, surrender any longing you might have for smooth propriety. Be willing to live without neat containment and polite decorum. Instead, be easy and breezy. Feel a generous acceptance for the messy beauty you’re embedded in. Love your life exactly as it is, with all of its paradoxes and mysteries. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Studies show that when you’re driving a car, your safest speed is five miles per hour higher than the average rate of traffic. Faster than that, though, and the danger level rises. Traveling more slowly than everyone else on the road also increases your risk of having an accident. Applying these ideas metaphorically, I’d like to suggest you take a similar approach as you weave your way through life’s challenges in the coming week. Don’t dawdle and plod. Move a little swifter than everyone else, but don’t race along at a breakneck pace. CANCER (June 21-July 22): The key theme this week is relaxed intensification. Your assignment, should you choose to accept it, is to heighten and strengthen your devotion to things that are important to you -- but in ways that make you feel more serene and self-possessed. To accomplish this, you will have to ignore the conventional wisdom, which falsely asserts that going deeper and giving more of yourself require you to increase your stress levels. You do indeed have a great potential for going deeper and giving more of yourself, but only if you also become more at peace with yourself and more at home in the world. Homework: Make a guess about where you’ll be and what you’ll be doing ten years from today. Testify at Freewillastrology.com. Rob Brezsny Free Will Astrology freewillastrology@freewillastrology.com

YOGA POSES & THEIR MEANING, PART TWO
L
ast week the explanation of selected yoga postures were shared to afford you greater insight to the practice. Many yoga postures are identified as relating to our natural surroundings. They are archetypes of animals, nature, and tools. Yoga can be your elixir for life. The movements are oil to the joints. Breathing soothes the central nervous system. You can increase your strength, flexibility and endurance. The benefits to this 5,000 year-old practice are endless. A common posture that you will find in virtually every yoga class is downward facing dog (adho mukha svanasana, sanskrit). Adho, downward ~mukha, face~ svana, dog. This posture is commonly found in a
traditional Sun Salutation sequence. It is also an excellent asana (pose) on its own. Downward Facing Dog is an inversion and arm balance simultaneously. In a Vinyasa (style of yoga) sequencing the first couple of DFD may feel challenging. As you move through your practice, DFD becomes a resting point and serves as a barometer for a stretch at the back of legs and shoulders. The inversion in DFD reverses the action of gravity on the body and circulates the blood and lymph in opposite directions. With increased blood flow the brain functions at a higher level and cognition is improved. Pressure is alleviated from the heart and it does not have to work as hard to get blood flowing to the brain. DFD tones and strengthens both arms and legs. This posture also elongates the spine and relieves pain in the upper and lower back. The body receives a 360-degree stretch in one pose. DFD is an exceptionally important posture and should be demonstrated by a qualified teacher. Cat-Cow (Marjariasana) is commonly
taught and is nearly as ubiquitous as Downward Facing Dog. These two postures are excellent for beginners and advanced practitioners. The motion of the postures is that of rounding the spine and hallowing out the belly. This motion helps revitalize the spine. The gentle release into cow, assists the spine, broadens the collar bones and stretches the abdominals. It gently tones the reproductive system and is exceptional for pregnant woman up to their second trimester. The cat-cow sequence is also known to help relieve menstrual cramps. Cat-Cow is most beneficial by repetition. The slow and controlled movement acts as a massage and increases circulation to the disc between the vertebrae. Suppleness and greater health is created within the vertebral discs. If you have serious health issues or concerns you should consult a physician prior to any exercise regimen. However, I am instructing more students who have been sent to yoga by their doctors. Doctors are recognizing the endless benefits of yoga. It is very important to seek a teacher/studio who has excellent teaching credentials, listens to your needs, and cares about their students. For those that don’t know much about Buddhism (count me in that group) here is what it’s about. Buddhism is a religion indigenous to the Indian subcontinent that encompasses a variety of traditions, beliefs and practices largely based on teachings attributed to Siddhartha Gautama, who is commonly known as the Buddha, meaning “the awakened one”. The Buddha lived and taught in the eastern part of the Indian subcontinent sometime between the 6th and 4th centuries BCE.[1] He is recognized by Buddhists as an awakened or enlightened teacher who shared his insights to help sentient beings end their suffering (dukkha) through the elimination of ignorance (avidyā) by way of understanding and the seeing of dependent origination (pratītyasamutpāda) and the elimination of craving (taṇhā), and thus the attainment of the cessation of all suffering, known as the sublime state of nirvāņa.

Six Ways to Sabotage a Job Interview
I
t’s been weeks since you interviewed for that dream job with your employer of choice. Your resume proves you are qualified, so what went wrong? Why the silent treatment? Playing the waiting game is frustrating and being passed-up for that coveted position is deflating. You can improve your interviewing skills by avoiding these six fatal mistakes. Ignore the questions asked: Often applicants are so anxious to prove worthy of the job, a rehearsed speech comes tumbling out after the initial hello. The interviewer gets bored, tunes out and wonders how soon she can show you the door. Prove to the recruiter you listen attentively by replying to questions with a direct answer. Watch for positive body language. If she looks perplexed, ask if clarification is required. If the question is, tell me about a time when you met an unrealistic deadline, launch into a succinct story giving a complete picture of how you handled the situation. Display enthusiasm and interest as you discuss why you are well-suited for the job. Nerves take over: Avoid self-sabotage and project a natural confidence. Many job candidates miss the opportunity to shine by working up a case of the jitters. Showing up at the interview like a frightened bird ruins your chances of securing an offer. Based

SUM on your resume, you have the skills and abilities the employer needs so relax. Don’t think of the interview as a test, but rather as an exchange of knowledge. Image issues: Dress appropriately. Admittedly, it sounds elementary; however, recruiters know that the image you present at the interview is you at your best. If you don’t look professional at the initial meeting, your stock rapidly declines. Body language is also important. Maintain a relaxed posture, employ positive facial expressions and gesture occasionally. Integrity issues: Keep it real by being honest. If you are thrown by a challenging question, avoid reacting. Pause and take a moment to think before you reply. If you do not have a good answer, admit it. You are not expected to know everything. Explain that if you are lacking a particular expertise you are a quick study. Provide a concrete example of how you excel at learning. Flat personality: Let your personality sparkle. Interviewing candidates hour after hour becomes tedious. Whoever is doing the interviewing is a real person. Offer up a reason to see her smile by injecting a bit of humor. No follow-up: Send a genuine thank you, not a perfunctory note. Write a meaningful communication that will help her remember you as the best of the best. rancendental meditation and Zen Buddism are at the heart of a small store called Buddha by the Sea, tucked away at 73540 Hwy 111 in Palm Desert (next to Randy’s Cafe). There you’ll find a serene atmosphere to purchase Tibetian Buddhist artwork, pictures, prayer flags, clothing and ritual items. A small sitting area features a tranquil fountain and comfy chairs to sit and enjoy a moment of peace or one of their classes on mediation. Owners Jim Hobson and Susan Dissette joined with Manager Bonnie Gilgallon (also a well-known radio host and actress) in honoring their friend Carol Irene Newell who passed from cancer. The idea had come to her in a meditation. After she passed they started a store to honor her memory. The store also hosts events including the singing Tibetan Bowls. Twice a month psychic Patricia De Joseph, a clairvoyant also teaches classes on communication with the other side. On October 4-7 they are hosting members of Tibetian Medicine and Astrological Institute (Men-Tee-Khang) into America as part of an outreach. There will be consultations in Tibetan medicine and astrology in conjunction with numerous classes of the day. There will be lectures
