efore you dare crack open another Bud Light, it’s time to elevate your drinking palate with a taste of what’s going on in the Coachella Valley’s local craft beer scene. More and more local restaurants are dedicating a handle or two to craft beers, while the recent opening of Total Wines in Palm Desert brought hundreds of small-batch lagers, ales and stouts to the desert. But wait, what’s a craft beer exactly? Think handcrafted brews produced by small and independently owned breweries, like the dozens of local breweries you’ll find in San Diego. Basically, the anti-Budweiser. Check out what’s going on locally with craft beer, and get ready to bid adieu to those bottles of Bud Light. Babe’s Bar-B-Que and Brewhouse

Back in 2002, restaurateur Don Callender (the man behind the Marie Callender’s chain) and COO Art Vasquez set out to pioneer the craft beer scene in the Coachella Valley with the opening of Babe’s Bar-BQue and Brewhouse in Rancho Mirage. Over the last decade, their dedication to craft beer has won the brewery numerous awards and accolades from the likes of the Australian International Beer Awards and
the L.A. International Commercial Beer Competition. Today, you can sample these awardwinning beers at the western-themed restaurant at The River. The most popular choice for people easing into craft beers is the Honey Blonde Ale, which won a gold medal at the 2012 L.A. International
Commercial Beer Competition. The light beer is brewed with California honey for a smooth, palate-pleasing finish. If you prefer lagers, the dark Blackfin is a favorite with Babe’s craft beer drinkers. Babe’s doesn’t stop with its own ales and lagers, either. The bar also stocks dozens of hand-selected beers from notable breweries

like Allagash, Stone and The Lost Abbey. If you’re overwhelmed with selections, you can order a flight of Babe’s house beers or go with the Cicerone, a flight that includes both in-house beers and notable brews from outside breweries. Monday nights are Beer Appreciation Day, where all craft beers are offered at half price from 3 p.m. to closing. For more information, check out Babe’s on Facebook at facebook.com/Babesbbqbrewhouse or on Instagram and Twitter, where they’ve built a community for local beer lovers with the #coachellavalleybeerscene hashtag.

Coachella Valley Brewing Company The local beer scene has been buzzing for months over the upcoming opening of Coachella Valley Brewing Company. Luckily for local beer drinkers, CVB will open its doors at the end of the month with a soft opening on Aug. 24. A few seats remain for the 12 p.m. event, and the $40 ticket includes food, a beer flight, tours and a pint of your choosing served in a souvenir glass to keep. Brewmaster Chris Anderson has a long history of producing award-winning beers, and in the Coachella Valley, his focus is to build a farmhouse brewery that uses local ingredients to brew truly local beers. The Desert Swarm, for example, uses locally
produced honey from Lance Davis’ Killer Bee Removal, while the Joshua Treeinspired Monumentous draws on local grapefruit and blood oranges to create a complex flavor profile. CVB has partnered with local farms and businesses not only to incorporate their produce (everything from dates and kumquats to marjoram and sage) in their beers, but also to ensure they create as little waste as possible. To this end, CVB is donating spent grain to local farmers who can use the grain as livestock feed. They’re also cooking up spent grain pretzels as a
4
bar snack and exploring local partnerships with businesses that can turn the grain into soaps or pet shampoos. Hurry and snag yourself one of the last spots for the soft opening by calling (760) 343-5973. La Quinta Brewing Company Over in Palm Desert, the La Quinta Brewing Company is gearing up to start pouring this fall. Started by desert native Scott Stokes, a former real estate developer with a passion for homebrewing, La Quinta Brewing Company will launch with a solid offering of four staples: pale ale,
amber wheat, blonde and an IPA, all using traditional ingredients. To launch the new brewery, Stokes partnered with Derek Lloyd and Ryan Pearson as Director of Sales and Master Brewer, respectively. Pearson comes from the award-winning Green Flash Brewery in San Diego, bringing both knowledge and experience to La Quinta Brewing Company’s brewhouse. When the brewery opens its doors this fall, you can expect beer tastings and special events like a “Meet the Brewer” night. Keep up with their progress at facebook.com/ LaQuintaBrewingCo. Schmidy’s Tavern Still fancy yourself a Coors drinker? So did Dennis Ford, who took over Schmidy’s Tavern with his wife, Kathy, earlier this year. But since taking over the bar, Ford has converted to craft beers – and Schmidy’s is sharing their passion for handcrafted brews through their weekly beer tastings. Cicerone Justin Moeller introduces locals to the best the craft beer world has to offer every Tuesday. For $15, you’ll get to sample a variety of handpicked beers, special

releases and other exciting players in the craft beer world. For a real lesson in all things craft beer, you can get schooled – literally – during Beer School, held on the last Wednesday of each month. Schmidy’s transforms into a craft beer classroom of sorts, where connoisseurs and novice drinkers alike can sample four craft beers (plus one surprise beer) with a meal pairing by a local guest chef. At $20 per person, it’s a steal. But be warned: these events fill up quickly and it’s first come, first served, so show up early to secure your seat (Beer School starts at 7 p.m.). Any other day of the week, you’ll find dozens of craft beers either on tap or by the bottle. Since they’re constantly changing their beer selections as small batches run out and new brews are brought in, your best bet is to check their Facebook page or website (schmidystavern.com) to see what’s available. And if you see something on the list that you want to try, act quickly – once these small-batch beers are gone, they’re gone.

WAXY M
Without Any eXplanation whY
y first peek at WAXY, the psychedelic, desert rock band, headed by local rocker and entrepreneur, Robbie Owen, was at the Date Shed. They were opening for Duff McKagan’s band Loaded. I found it to be powerfully soulful, and heartfelt and awesomely loud. Watching Robbie play was like watching someone travel transcendentally to another dimension. Eyes closed, music pouring out from his guitar as naturally as if he could play it in his sleep. I’m not sure that he was aware at first, that the music brought Duff (known mostly as the bass player from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Guns and Roses) out of the artist’s room to check him out until after he finished playing his song. I watched as Robbie looked up to find Duff giving him a seriously approving nod. The very gracious player thanked Duff over the mic for coming out and giving them a listen. Waxy has been getting nods from locals and fellow musicians for the better part of the past decade. What started out as a three piece acoustic in the styles of rock greats Neil Young, Bob Dylan and early Springsteen, eventually morphed into a the magical sound and energy becoming known worldwide as “desert rock roots”, a formula that only our southern California low and high deserts seem to produce at its unique best. A revolving door of talented artists have graced the stage as members of Waxy, thus growing its founder and front man musically and emotionally, which has
6
played a part in the unique, transient and unpredictable goodness that Waxy has become known and loved for. The only things completely predictable are the bands sincerity, soul and volume. Appearances can definitely be deceiving. WAXY’s fan page warns, “Do not be fooled – WAXY may look like hard rocking desert mother___s, but inside us, reside the tender hearts of tiny newborn kittens.” I can’t confirm the “hearts of tiny newborn kittens” description, but WAXY, and especially their founder Robbie, definitely fit the hard rock look and sound criteria. One might never venture to picture Robbie Owens donning a USC cap and gown, but there’s got to be a picture of it somewhere, as he attended and graduated from the prestigious school on a partial tennis scholarship. As homegrown as it gets here in the desert, Robbie grew up a typical country club kid playing golf and tennis. “I kind of got into music late. I played piano at a young age, around 7, but hated it. I couldn’t find the joy in music. I really didn’t start playing guitar till I was about 14. That’s when I saw ‘Janie’s Got a Gun’ on MTV and saw Joe Perry on a Les Paul solid body electric guitar. I saw Jimmy Hendrix on a Les Paul. Jimmy Page and Bob Marley were all playing a Les Paul. I said, ‘Dad, I don’t know what that is, but I want one.’ My dad and I have been collecting guitars ever since.” With school and tennis both ending at the same time, Robbie went into business for himself. “When I graduated from school, I took over the old A&R Recording Studio here in the desert. That’s when I first got into making music. I went from tennis strings to guitar strings. I just really jumped into it with the little bit of base knowledge that I had. I did a lot of reading, studying and got some help from friends. After going through those initial growing pains, I realized that I knew what I was doing, and that I had the ability to approach it from a musical side more than a techy side.” Now called Unit-A Recording and Art, the studio is located by the Palm Springs Airport. “The recording studio world is always changing,” shared Robbie. “People are doing so much from home.I’m a mid-level recording studio. If you want to make a record with a timeless
www.coachellavalleyweekly.com
by lisa morgan quality that really does sound good, I can get you there. For example, somebody might say, ‘that’s a really good song, but I wish it was recorded better, you can come to a place like mine, and I can help get you over that hump. I’ve got a nice sounding drum room, and I’ve got a lot of toys to choose from: four drum kits, dozens of guitars, a piano, a bunch of different mics and amps... it’s kind of like a musician’s man cave. I love the recording process, and am very at home in the studio.” Robbie’s Unit-A studio has the capacity to record both digitally or on analog. “I’ve got a Pro Tools HD3 system, which is pretty much state of the art now. I’ve got an old 2” tape machine and an old analog console that I love, as well as a bunch of outboard gear.” With 3000 square feet, there’s plenty of room to get creative. After six years of recording music produced solely for the purpose of having something to sell at their shows, WAXY fans are now enjoying the band’s first official album. The self-titled album is what Robbie describes as “the first album I always wanted to make. I’m very proud of the new record.” I, personally, can’t stop listening to it. It’s extremely well produced, passionate, not in the least bit commercial, yet still universally appealing within its genre and scope. It’s quite a find to come across music that stands solidly on rock and roll fundamentals, while avoiding the cookie cutter potential of the genre and achieving a unique sound that doesn’t belong to anybody else. WAXY accomplished this very tastefully. But I have to say, there is just no comparison to hearing and seeing this band live. There is a truly beautiful yet intense energy that comes from the stage, mixed with their great sound and vocals, that makes this band a must see. Hopes of making the leap from an opening band to a headliner are riding on this album that includes contributions from some of the deserts best players. “Playing music for a living, that’s what I want to do,” shared Robbie. While that may be a common dream for our deserts musicians, WAXY might just have a shot at it. They have aligned themselves with Cobraside
Distribution, a vinyl distributor, based in Glendale, CA. Waxy recently played a Cobraside show, resulting in the sale of several hundred albums through their distribution lines. “They are real music lovers,” boasts Robbie about their new alliance. “They are independent music pioneers with their fist up in the wind saying, ‘Look what we’ve got!’” Plans for a new record are underway, though still in infancy. WAXY hopes to have the album of 15-16 songs all written by Robbie, ready by early next year. “It’s going to be very different from the first album. I’m a much different person now than I was 2-4 years ago,” shared Robbie. “The main difference is that I’m not going to take 2 years to micromanage this one. It’s going to be much more organic. I’ll be shooting from the hip. It’s not going to be raw, but it’s not going to be overly refined either.” The album, much like the first, will be a powerful collaboration, celebrating the desert’s best. “I have a lot of friends who want to do something on the new album,” Robbie explained. “What I’ll do, is lay the principal guitars, drums and bass down... maybe some keys, but mostly concentrating on the guitars and the arrangements. John Garcia (Kyuss/Vista Chino) may fit best in one song, while Jesika VonRabbit, Gary Arce as well as some of the members in War Drum want to do something on it as well.” The list of collaborators goes on. “It’s a project for music lovers who love to record and dig the project. If it turns out the way I think it’s going to, it’s going to be another album I’m really proud of.” The way I see it, this will be a project the entire desert will be proud of. WAXY’s list of interchangeable players is as follows: Robbie Owen - Vox/Guitars Damian Lautiero - Bass and Guitar Ehren Groban - Guitars Jack Kohler - Keys Mike Johnson - Drums Brett Stadler - Lyrics and Harmonica Landerra - Drums Peter Leighton - Drums Owen Street - Electronic Bass JP Houston - Keys Previous members: Landerra Sean Carrillo (Chainsaw holiday, Self-Titled) Charles Pasarell (Waxy, Chainsaw holiday) Fred Kores WAXY will be performing with Machin’ and Blasting Echo this Saturday, August 17th at Schmidy’s Tavern in Palm Desert (Hwy 111 and Fred Waring, next to Men’s Warehouse). This musically rich, face melting evening will begin at 9:30pm. Meanwhile, you can follow WAXY on their Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ WAXYOfficial, and you can listen to and purchase music and merchandise on their website www.waxy-music.com. Unit A Recording & Arts is located at 800 Vella Road, Suite A, in Palm Springs. Call them at (760) 327-8812 and check out their website at www.unit-a.com.

Coachella Valley Art Center Presents: A Rock and Roll Benefit Show
W
hat does $5 dollars buy these days? A little more than a gallon of gas, a large specialty coffee drink, lunch - maybe? What if I told you that $5 can buy hope, help and comfort and life? We at CV Weekly, the Coachella Valley Art Center and the local musicians of bands Deadend Paradox, Bat Skinners, Basaracts, Lights and Tribesman invite you to a night of some of the best live Rock and Roll our desert has to offer. These bands are all showing up for little Alissia who was diagnosed at the age of 2 ½ with the rare brain cancer, Pineoblastoma. She is now 5 years old and still fighting like a champ. Below, I have copied and pasted the letter her father, Chris Parga, has posted on gofundme.com as they aim to raise $15,000 to cover her hospital bills and treatment that have been accumulating and will continue to accumulate as this beautiful little 5 year old fights for her life. As of today, they have raised $1,770: “Hello, this is a donation page for Alissia, my little girl with a big heart. She is incredibly strong, smart, beautiful, and never stops smiling no matter what. Alissia was unfortunately diagnosed with Pineoblastoma at the age of two and a half. It has been two and a half years since she’s been diagnosed. Alissia is now five, and the two and a half years have been very rough for her, the rest of the family, and I. She’s been battling this very aggressive form of
brain cancer with the help of her wonderful nurses, doctors, and surgeons. She also has the support of her family and friends keeping her happy and alive. Saying that the treatment she has gone through has been tough is an understatement. She has had the strongest Chemotherapy administered, along with six weeks of proton radiation, and three bone marrow transplants. She also went through a year of physical therapy, and two corrective eye surgeries. Alissia has stayed strong through her treatments. She has made great progress until recently when returning from a Make-a-Wish trip to Disneyland with her family she became ill. We then took her to get her CT scan then an MRI only to receive the very upsetting news we had hoped that we would never get to hear ever again. That Alissia’s cancer has relapsed and has also spread to her spine. We got this news a little less than a week ago. The treatment for this will be enduring more chemo. Surgeries and radiation are out of the question this time around. Hearing all of this terrible news, Alissia’s beautiful smile has helped, and reminded us all of what is truly important during this devastating time, her happiness. We, her family, would like to do everything to keep her happy in every single way that we can. This is where we also need your help; the medical and living expenses are piling up for her mom and me, and have been since it all began. We have lost jobs
and homes during this hard time. Every donation sent will be appreciated greatly, and no amount of thank yous could begin to show our gratitude for you helping us out. Thank you all from the parents, Chris and Martha, all of her family, and most of all from Alissia.” The fund raiser was brought to my attention by Alex from the band Deadend Paradox in hopes to help raise awareness for the event. While they do not know the family personally, they, along with the other bands jumped at the chance to help them. I assure you, this band will not disappoint. Deadend Paradox is an Alternative/Punk Band born and bred in the Coachella Valley. These three likeminded individuals, who all discovered music at an early age growing
up in the Coachella Valley, are Alex Antonio on guitar and lead vocals, Eddie Airada on drums and Chris Dub on bass. They have been writing, recording, and playing live since its inception in 2008. Alex explains, “There’s never a dull moment; the music is as diverse as the personalities of the band’s members - sometimes brash and loud, other times untroubled and tranquil.” This band prides itself in taking a different approach on how music is presented. “In a day and age where fiction has become reality, we have chosen quality over quantity. Nothing speaks as loudly to an individual than something you can not only hear, but you can feel. If you want something fast and melodic, we got it. If you want something genuine and loud, that’s our sound.” They have over two dozen new songs they will be posting in the next couple of weeks, but for now, check out a few of their tunes at www. facebook.com/deadendparadox3. This band promises to be a dynamic addition to the amazing lineup that you’ll be able to enjoy at the Coachella Valley Art Center this Saturday, August 17th starting at 6pm. If you cannot attend the fund raiser, then please go to the fund raising site and do what you can to help. You can also follow Alissia’s progress. Let’s show this family how much love lives in this beautiful valley of ours. To donate go to www.gofundme. com/3kolr8.

B
ack by popular demand, the beautiful ladies of Granville Automatic will once again be joined by their friend, collaborator, Americana rockin’ blues-smith and producer, Ted Russell Camp. As I look back, remembering their absolutely, brilliant display of musical workmanship earlier this year, I fight to find the words strong enough to compel you to not miss this gathering of insanely talented song crafters. So, I’ll just say this: Get your asses down there and improve your musical love life. Come on... it’ll be fun! TED RUSSELL KAMP: After decades
spent holding down the bottom end for bands as diverse as Shooter Jennings and Wilson Phillips, Ted Russell Kamp has become the go-to guy for bands needing a player that can easily and soulfully handle many genres of music. The past five years, however, have found Kamp rising to be one of the current stars out of California on the National Americana and Country scenes as he has focused on his own career with constant touring of the US and Europe, and releasing six solo albums. His most recent, Get Back To The Land, received critical acclaim as The Big Takeover described it as “Kamp simply knocks one ball after another out of the park ... Saturated in talent and sincerity ... nothing more than good music
done right.” The album also received considerable airplay making the Americana Music Association’s Top 100 records of the year and debuting at #1 on the Euro Americana Chart. Easily his most autobiographical work, the newly recorded Night Owl, documents the many phases of a man comfortable in his own skin, yet constantly searching for more answers to the mysteries of life. The record reflects the sound of several cities Kamp has become familiar with from country music roots of Nashville, the rockgospel blues of Tulsa and Texas and the cosmic American country rock sounds of L.A. All of the songs were written on the road or in brief breaks from touring and the record, produced by Kamp, was actually recorded in L.A, Nashville, Fort Worth, Tulsa and Helsinki, Finland. Kamp collaborated on Night Owl with many talented musicians. Some of the notable co-writes are “Smile Alone” (with Will Hoge), “The Last Drop” (Charlie Starr of Blackberry Smoke) and “Santa Ana Winds” (Katy Moffatt). “When The Radio Goes Dead” was written solely by Ted Russell Kamp and was originally recorded on the Shooter Jennings’ Black Ribbons album. Ted played many of the instruments on the record himself (electric and acoustic bass, guitars, mandolin, trumpet, Hammond organ and others). The path of a traveling musician often leaves the artist longing to connect. With this honest and lush new record, Night Owl, Ted Russell Kamp conveys this feeling and transcends it as he shares his sounds and thoughts with the listener. Ted, an accomplished producer in Los Angeles, also produced the self-titled album from Granville Automatic, who will be joining him at Pappy & Harriet’s this Thursday night. I strongly suggest you make it down to see him live as he will be out of
reach come October on a European tour. GRANVILLE AUTOMATIC: I’ve said it

before; there is something beautifully enchanting about the stories these talented songsmiths bring to life through their music. Vanessa Olivarez’s alluringly winsome and mesmerizing vocals will absolutely own you as she and Elizabeth paint beautiful, nostalgic pictures and stories, some of which can only be found within the generations of families who have protected their family histories, honoring the blood sacrifices that were foundational in our country’s history. Their first, self-titled CD is a fantastic historical collection of stories that create cinematic, mental pictures as you listen to the heartfelt and personal stories they sing. This gorgeous collection includes “Comanche”, a song written from the perspective of a horse that survived the Battle of Little Big Horn; “The Grounds Keeper”, telling the tale of a Civil War ghost seen at the Camton Plantation in Franklin, Tennessee. Other songs capture the timeless spirit and character of the south like “Never on a Sunday” and “Don’t Come to Tennessee”. These hard working artists are traveling across America to record our songs about the Civil War, live at the places the stories actually happened. graveyards and Target stores. The live songs will be disc one of their next album, An Army Without Music. Disc two will be studio, full-band versions of many of their songs. They’re capturing each recording adventure with a video. They just finished the last two videos, Copenhill (Atlanta) and Grancer Harrison (Alabama). These should be released at the end of this month. Their live An Army without Music recordings will be done by the end of the year, and then they’ll be working on the studio album. (Watch for their Kickstarter campaign) They are also already writing their 4th album which will be called Dancing at El Mercado. These songs are all about Texas. We hope to record it next spring near Austin. And if that’s not busy enough for you they just taped a Daytrotter Session a few weeks back in Rock Island, Illinois that should be posted on daytrotter.com sometime this week. As absolutely gorgeous and soulful as these artists’ recordings are, there is just nothing like hearing their live performances and getting to meet them in person. If you’ve never seen Ted Russell Camp or the ladies of Granville Automatic before, you will be blessed with a new incredible music experience and leave Pappy & Harriet’s having made some very talented new friends. f course that title might not play too well when White hits the golf course with friends like Patrick Evans, Kris Long and Gino LaMont. All the anchors love to joke around, including via text message while they’re on their individual nightly newscasts. Unlike major markets where choice onair positions often breed stiff competition, here in the valley there is more camaraderie between the anchors. For valley residents who have watched him from his earliest days as the host of a weekly cable public affairs show to his current position as co-anchor with Karen Divine on KESQ’s 5, 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts, White has become one of the Coachella Valley’s most trusted newscasters. His original path wasn’t news, though, he said recently from the KESQ studios in Thousand Palms. White, 46, grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and attended Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois where he earned his bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism. It wasn’t until his junior year that he finally declared his major and at the time was more interested in sports than news. “I wanted to do play-by-play and field reporting,” he said. White met Cynthia, his future wife, who was from California in school. Since she wanted to return to her home state, White drove to the Coachella Valley with her, then flew home to Illinois to pack up his car and head back to the desert. “I came out here to follow my dream,” he said of the trip back to a place where there was no job waiting for him. “We both figured it would be easier to find a job in a smaller market. It’s something that’s a lot easier to do where you’re 24 and don’t have any responsibilities yet.” His first valley broadcast job started in 1991 on the old KNWZ-AM. “When I came here none of the (television) stations were doing weekend or early morning news shows,” he recalled. “You took what you could find.” Within a year White had picked up a second gig with the local cable company doing a weekly half-hour public affairs wrap-up show on weekends. He started at KESQ in 1995 and stayed
until 1997 as a reporter. At the time, “The studios were still in a tiny building in Cathedral City,” he said. In ’97, White moved to Harrisburg, Penn., to work at WHP-TV. White’s daughter, Jacqueline was born while he worked in Harrisburg, but White wanted to return to the Coachella Valley. In 2000, White was asked to take over the evening anchor chair at KESQ. In that position White has interviewed former governors Arnold Schwarzenegger and Pete Wilson, President Gerald Ford and other newsmakers and reported on stories including Sept. 11 Attacks, the Valley’s Growth Boom, expansion of Indian gaming, the Salton Sea, 1992 Landers Earthquake, the Power Crisis and O.J. Simpson Verdict, and the Colorado wildfires in 2012. The recent cohabitation of the KESQ and CBS Local 2 teams in one building has given both news teams a combined power when it comes to covering big stories in the valley, as on the recent Mountain and Silver fires when both sets of anchors shared the same broadcasts. “We all have our own personalities,” White said. The hope, he added, was that by combining the news casts the viewers would get a more comprehensive view of what was happening. “Hopefully the viewers appreciated it.” A good poker player and avid golfer, living in the Coachella Valley means combining his favorite game with charities he supports. “I get to associate my favorite game with worthy associations,” he said. Two of White’s favorites are the Humana Challenge Golf Tournament and Patrick Warburton Golf for Kids Celebrity Golf Tournament. Between the world class golf, restaurants and concerts, combined with the valley’s small town feel, White seems content. “We have it all,” he said. “A wonderful quality of life and if you want to go to a major league ball game or the beach for the day, it’s only a couple of hours away.”

For all her precocity, Richey was something of a late bloomer. She signed her first record deal with Mercury Nashville at age 37. Her self-titled debut arrived in 1995, followed in quick succession by Bittersweet in 1997 and Glimmer in 1999. All these albums were well-received, but Richey was quite an anomaly in 1990s Nashville. She never even tried to compete with glamour girls like Shania Twain, Faith Hill or Martina McBride. Something of a tomboy, Richey came equipped with a secret weapon: her talent as a songwriter. Trisha Yearwood, Radney Foster, Brooks & Dunn and the Dixie Chicks all had huge hits with Richey’s songs. By 2002, Richey followed Mercury/ Nashville president Luke Lewis, to his new label Lost Highway. It was a much better fit. The label featured an eclectic roster of artists like Ryan Adams, Elvis Costello, David Baerwald, Shelby Lynne, the Jayhawks, Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson and Lucinda Williams. Along with changing labels, Richey slightly altered her creative process for her 2002 album, Rise. Recorded in California rather than Nashville, it was produced by Bill Bottrell, (best known for producing Sheryl Crow’s debut, Tuesday Night Music Club). The strategy paid off. Richey escaped the rigid confines of Nashville and introduced
her sound to NPR listenin’ Starbucks drinkin’ aesthetes. Since then, Richey has made a habit of subverting expectations. Her 2007 release, Chinese Boxes was both adventurous and under-appreciated. It was produced by Giles Martin, son of famed Beatles producer, George Martin. In 2010 she took another left turn with Wreck Your Wheels. Whereas Chinese Boxes was sharp and ornate, Wreck had a loose, lived-in feel. Her new effort, Thorn In My Heart kinda sorta follows a similar formula as Wreck Your Wheels. It is produced by Neilson Hubbard, guitarist in Richey’s touring band. The album opens with the title track. Strumming acoustic and pedal steel guitar cushion this soulful plea to end an unhealthy relationship… “Here we stand between a rock and stone, we took it all the way down to skin and bone/ I will always love you, but you make it so hard/ Are you always gonna be a thorn in my heart?” Two tracks, “Something More” and “Angel’s Share,” distill the chaotic swirl of emotion and self-destructive behavior that accompanies heartbreak. On the former, plucked banjo notes and crystalline vocals underscore the ennui of romantic dislocation… “Keeping track of all the hours I can’t sleep, flipping channels in the dark on TV/I’m still hoping that there’s something more.” The mood is suitably soporific. The latter is a mid tempo wallow steeped in liquid courage. Drowned sorrows and paralyzed emotions are accented by lonesome fiddle and desolate piano underpinnings. “I can’t stand the day, I can’t stand the night/ I’m scared of the dark and I’m scared of the light.” Richey maintains her reputation as a musical shape-shifter on three tracks. Expanding her sonic palette she adds Jazz textures, Bluegrass colors and the satisfying wallop of Classic Rock.
“London Town” blends melancholy muted flugelhorn figures with in the pocket percussion. On the surface, the lyrics are a lonesome lament for London, but really, Richey is pining for the person she left in London Town. “Take Me To The Other Side” mines a back porch Bluegrass groove while offering a little spiritual redemption. The tune is anchored by piquant mandolin runs, churchy piano chords and gut bucket guitar. Finally, “Come On” displays the basic DNA of straight ahead Rock & Roll. Powered by a rock steady beat and a serpentine guitar solo, the tune combines Stones-y swagger with the crackling efficiency of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. The album includes a couple of duets. On “Breakaway Speed,” former Drive-By Trucker vocalist Jason Isbell provides a masculine energy to this tale of love on the run. Carl Broemel, guitarist for My Morning Jacket takes the lead on “I Will Wait.” Supple Wurlitzer fills and a tick tock beat can’t camouflage the sexual frisson these two generate as they plan an assignation. Other stand-out tracks include “Love Is,” a slip-slidey waltz powered by an impossibly sweet clarinet solo. The sprightly and banjoriffic “I’m Going Down,” and “No Means Yes,” a sly meditation on adultery. The album closes with “Everything’s Gonna Be Good,” a languid piano driven ballad that feels cautiously optimistic. Thorn In My Heart feels like a journey from heartache to spiritual redemption. With Richey behind the wheel, we are lucky enough to ride shotgun on this aural adventure.

Enjoy great music by Steve Madaio at bluEmber
T
K
im Richey is one of Nashville’s best kept secrets. Growing up in Ohio, Richey spent her early years haunting her Aunt’s record shop. She was allowed free reign over the 45 bin, giving her access to music by Janis Joplin and the Lovin’ Spoonful. At age 12, Richey received her first guitar. By high school, she had already formed a few bands. Following college, Richey satisfied her wanderlust by traveling. Throughout her twenties she lived in Colorado, South America, Europe, Boston and Washington State. Creatively, she spent those years woodshedding in a variety of bands. To make ends meet she worked as a waitress, a cook and an animal rights advocate. By 1988, she put down roots in Nashville. Musically, she was most influenced by Joni Mitchell. She was also inspired by Steve Earle, a Texas singer-songwriter who moved to Nashville and railed against the staid Nashville traditions. Brash and unspoken, Earle was briefly considered the Bruce Springsteen of Country music.

rumpeter and recording artist Steve Madaio performs every Saturday and Sunday from 6 until 10 p.m. on the beautiful outside patio of the bluEmber Restaurant at Rancho Las Palmas Resort & Spa, 41-000 Bob Hope Drive in Rancho Mirage. (760) 862-4581. He is performing with guitarist Bobby Nichols and last Saturday, I was called to perform as a guest. What a lovely place for the entire family. Madaio has a great sense of humor and is always encouraging the young children, who find him fascinating, to learn how to play music. During his breaks, he plays songs from two of his CDs “Midnight Rendezvous” a very romantic CD; and also songs from his latest CD “The KM Project” he recorded with flute player Tom Keenlyside from Van Couver, BC. “We wanted to make this CD with songs that most people wouldn’t think of recording as instrumentals,” said Madaio. “We included ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale’, ‘Born To Be Wild’ and ‘Ode To Billy Joe’, it was a lot of fun recording with Tom Keenlyside.” You will really enjoy both CDs and they are available at the restaurant. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York with one brother and two sisters, Steve Madaio started playing the trumpet when
he was six years old. “My father gave me one trumpet lesson and told me that if he taught me trumpet, I would start to hate it. So my parents gave me a great start by hiring some of the best teachers in the world. I was studying to be a classical musician.” At the age of fifteen, he was playing in the orchestra for Broadway plays; “Man of La Mancha” and “Promises”. At the age of seventeen, he performed with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band at the Monterey Pop Festival and then later joined the band and performed with them at Woodstock in 1969. After high school, he attended Mannes College The New School For Music in New York City. He continued playing in Broadway shows and then started playing Rock and Roll
shows. “I played a show with Screamin’ Jay Hawkins at the Paramount Theater. When I saw him come on the stage with a cape on and wearing feathers, I said, this is it, this is what I want to do!” A very talented and diverse musician, Madaio toured with the Beach Boys; and recorded and toured with Janis Joplin; while still playing with Lionel Hampton, the Buddy Rich Band and the Woody Herman Band. “I came to the point where the Big Bands didn’t interest me any more, I was enjoying the Rock and Roll lifestyle.” In 1970 he started performing with Stevie Wonder and the Wonderlove Band. They were the opening act for the Rolling Stones during their American Tour in 1971. Band members included David Sanborn on saxophone, Ray Parker on guitar and Denise Williams sang background vocals. He was on several of Stevie Wonder albums from “Superstition” to “Songs of the Key of Life” and all the ones in between. He moved to Los Angeles in 1973 at the request of Lou Adler, where he recorded the original soundtrack for “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” in 1974. Ever since high school he wanted to be a session musician, and he is living his dreams. He has performed on so many albums the list is too long to mention. I suggest you visit: wwwSpotlightHeroes.com and go to Steve Madaio. There you will see a long list of albums he performed on. He has recorded sessions for John Lennon; Harry Nilsson; The Rolling Stones; Bob Dylan; David Bowie; Donna Summer; Earth, Wind and Fire; Bonnie Raitt; Barbra Streisand; Dr. John and the Night Trippers; to name a few. He moved to Palm Springs in 1994 because he loved the community. Madaio started performing with pianist Yarek Urant at San Tropez, a hot spot for great music and dining, He purchased the venue and it became Madaio’s San Tropez, now the Back Street Bistro. Many of his musician friends would stop by including Stevie Wonder, Ray Brown, Conti Condoli, Pete Condoli, Kenny Rankin, Glen Fry, Pat Rizzo, Andy Fraga and Patrick Tuzzolino, to name a few. As a matter of fact, I met drummer Chiz Harris there. That
was the first time in my life I could feel the drums “talk” when they were played by him. Madaio and Keelyside had charts made of their current concept CD for a full orchestra and performed the entire CD with the Coachella Valley Symphony on April 16, 2013. The performance was video taped and is currently being edited for release by the end of the year. “When your motive and intent are in the right place, everything else will follow. It may take some time, but I have always lived my life like this. I have been very fortunate to have such a great career. To this day, I still thank my parents for allowing me to follow my dreams. We have a limited time on this earth. Having fun and playing from the heart is what it is all about. There are a lot of things I still want to do, I am enjoying my life.”

PET PLACE Hazards of Pet Chewing
www.coachellavalleyweekly.com
by Janet McAfee
C
harlie, my brother’s dog, died this week on the operating table during surgery after swallowing part of a rubber ball. The object ruptured his esophagus. Charlie’s family is heartbroken over the loss of their 3-year-old Shepherd mix dog, and wondering what they could have done differently. What can pet owners do to prevent such a tragedy? Objects most likely to cause this type of obstruction are smooth sided and spherical like a golf ball or rubber ball. Pet owners need to acquire information and exercise caution. Symptoms that indicate your dog swallowed something causing an obstruction are vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, fever, lethargy, loss of appetite and blood in the feces. Charlie vomited, could not keep food down, and could barely drink water. The emergency vet clinic did blood work, but it was not until Charlie was seen by his regular vet that an x-ray showed what appeared to be an object. If your pet has these symptoms, it’s important to get the animal in for veterinary treatment as soon as possible, particularly if you know he has a tendency to chew
and swallow foreign objects. Fortunately, most cases are not fatal, but they can be distressful for you and your pet. Lillian Roberts, DMV, sees this problem in her practice at Country Club Animal Clinic in Palm Desert. Dr. Roberts comments, “The most common thing dogs swallow are toys of an inappropriate size or toys that are worn out, and then they can’t pass them or vomit them up. We also see cases of dogs eating things out of the trash or clothing left on the floor. The breeds most likely to ingest foreign objects are Labs and Golden
Retrievers, although I had one 14-year-old Yorkie patient who needed carpet fibers removed from his stomach.” Dr. Roberts noted that even bones can be a problem if they splinter. She recommends Kongs as the safest alternative. These can be filled with a dab of peanut butter or pet food, and keep the dog occupied for some time. Toys that are too small can easily be swallowed or become lodged in their throats. Discard broken or torn pet toys. Remove parts of pet toys that can easily be eaten such as ribbons, strings, and artificial eyes. Check with your vet about what chew toys are appropriate for your dog. The Humane Society of the United States recommends very hard rubber toys such as Nylabone and Kong products. Feline patients may have ingested such objects as string, thread, and ribbon. During the Christmas season, tinsel dangling off the tree may tempt your cat. Cats have been known to consume sewing thread along with the attached needle. For a variety of reasons, some dogs are habitual chewers and you must “dog proof” your home and yard. Keep objects like pens, shoes, eyeglasses, remote controls

and dirty laundry out of reach. Plastic bags that once contained food are very attractive to dogs. Keep trash cans covered or out of reach. One of the most common things Dr. Roberts has removed from dogs’ digestive tracks are tennis balls. Dogs love to play with tennis balls, but they can be hazardous if swallowed. Puppies, like human toddlers, explore the world by putting things in their mouths. Chewing facilitates teething and makes sore gums feel better. Check with your vet and specialty pet shops to find appropriate things for puppies to chew. According to local dog trainer Sandy Miller, some dogs chew out of boredom. Sandy states, “Obedience training will improve your dog’s behavior in many areas, including chewing and digging. When a dog has rules and structure, his behavior improves.” One of the basic commands is teaching your dog to “leave it” and release a foreign object, whether it’s a valuable possession or a chunk of plastic in the back yard. Sandy stresses, “That dogs need to be part of the family and get enough human interaction. Dogs left alone for long periods of time are more likely to chew and destroy things out of frustration.” Both Sandy Miller and Dr. Roberts recommend Bitter Apple spray, a pet repellent available at pet specialty stores. This product can be sprayed on objects and surfaces you want the dog to stay away from. One of my foster dogs would chew and eat her bedding and throw rugs until I discovered this product. Do not discipline your dog if you arrive home and find your most expensive pair of shoes chewed up, even minutes after the act. The dog doesn’t associate any punishment with behavior that’s in the past. Don’t run after him if he runs away with your favorite sweater because he will think this is a game. Instead, call him to come toward you and offer a treat instead. Give your dog plenty of “people time”, and physical and mental exercise. A tired dog is less likely to get into trouble. Take him on car trips and on interesting walks in different neighborhoods. Chewing behavior may be related to separation anxiety as well as boredom. Don’t ban your dog from all play with toys. They can benefit greatly from a game of fetch or Frisbee, and the bond between you will increase through these games. Country Club Animal Clinic can be contacted at (760) 776-7555. For assistance with challenging dog behavior problems including chewing, trainer Sandy Miller can be reached at (760) 360-4085.

The Perfect Zin for Summertime
I
know it’s still hot out—and we’ve been covering refreshing white wines of the summer, but let’s take a break and get our quick red wine fix on for a moment. California really has its mark on its own “native” red wine. The low-key arrival of the Zinfandel plant from the Croatia area back around the 1850s was cultivated up in Northern Cal, but there’s no question that everyone cherishes Zin to be our own state wine. Indeed—isn’t the Golden Bear on our state flag caught trouncing upon Zinfandel grapes? And the wine can be a heavy hitter when it comes to its full-bodied character. It’s been known to take down the richest of barbequed ribs and the most garlicky slew of snails and sausages. But this time of year we’re not looking for all that heftiness in an all-purpose wine. The Zinfandel that I am recommending is a fairly light medium-bodied red that can be chilled up or left out on the table to warm up and still maintain a tasty wine presence. And the price is a knock-out! I can get one 4 liter bottle—which works out to 5 standard size bottles of wine—for just around fourteen bucks! Just the other day while coming back from the OC, I was close by the Galleano
Winery, and I thought I’d just stop over and say hi to Don Galleano, and pick up my usual four-bottle case of Cucamonga Valley Zinfandel. I’ve written about this place before. The winery grounds have kept their bucolic grandma’s-house charm. Every time I pull into the winery—and I pull in really slow, I am whisked back to a time in my childhood where we played on swings tied to the thick branches of old trees while soft breezes of citrus and fig-leaf aromas wafted around our little noses. Galleano Winery is Rancho Cucamonga Valley’s Historic Landmark Winery producing award winning wines since 1933. The winery is located at the southern fringe of the Cucamonga Valley in Mira Loma’s Wineville area and is still much the same as it was in 1927 when the Galleano family purchased the land. The winery produces 200,000 gallons of wine and bottles just under 10,000 cases, including 80 year old vine Zinfandel and Rhone varietals. People forget that in the late 1800s and early 1900s, there were more vineyard acreage in the Cucamonga wine area than all of the vineyards in the Sonoma and Napa Valleys today! Third generation wine-maker Don Galleano and his wines have been awarded more gold medals over the years than the Olympic swimmers. When it comes to Southern California wine history, the Galleano family has a few chapters in it. I’ve palled around with Don close to 25 years at various wine events, where he often plays chief wine judge at state fairs and international wine competitions. He’s a great cook and has a great network of wine & foodie friends who often bring by aged Italian cheeses & meats, truffles from France, local freshly dressed sausages, wild rabbit from Portugal—fun stuff like that! And no matter what time of day or what fun Italianstyle-dining-commotion is going on, there is always a refreshing bottle of the beloved Cucamonga Valley Zinfandel on the table. This engaging vino is delicious and is my house wine too. And most red wine drinkers that I’ve shared this with agree that you cannot find a better tasting Zin in that price range or close to it. I say “most” because I’ve found that those who enjoy “easy” wines—soft tastes with a very round feel, aren’t partial to this Zin, (if they drink Zinfandel at all), because this stuff—for as light-bodied as it is—really grabs you! There’s plenty of red and black fruit flavors all over the place, but some have described it as “rustic”. Now that could be true, but I would use the word “robust».
The wine is from age-old weathered Cucamonga Valley vines (what’s left of them) that are dry-farmed i.e., God does the watering. It would almost be an insult to call this a “jug wine”, but for the fact the bottle it comes in is traditionally called—well, a four liter “jug”! But don’t confuse this with the cheap stuff. This wine has complexity. With carne asada tacos and pico de gallo salsa, we chilled the wine up and it bloomed mint and lavender notes around a blackberry finish. With Italian sausage and sautéd mushroom parmigiana penne pasta, the wine cradled the meal with aged cherry flavors and anise. Enjoy it with
all Italian fare, grilled foods, barbecues, sandwiches, and cheeses. Perfect for summer, it’s a light old-style Zinfandel with a classic pepper backdrop. This wine is aged and softened in very large old redwood vats, and that’s why it scores in competitions: there’s great wood backbone here as with the higher priced Zins. One can find a standard 750ml bottle at BevMo in La Quinta. However the 4 liter jugs are sold only at the winery. The Galleano Winery is located in Mira Loma, right at the Interstate 15, and California Hwy 60. It’s about an hour’s drive from Palm Springs: a perfect weekend destination. Or, when driving from Orange County or LA on business or pleasure, it behooves us to stop by to pickup a case for that dinner party or simply to stock our happy wine bin. Life is good. A la salute! The Historic Landmark Galleano Winery: 4231 Wineville Rd, Mira Loma, CA 91752. 951.685.5376 Tours, Wine Tasting, Picnics, & Gifts: Mon-Sat 9am-5pm, Sun 10:30am-5pm

here are few venues that compare to the glitzy Riviera Palm Springs. This iconic playground of the past has a fresh, playful twist. This was a Rat Pack hangout for Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. The Riviera’s famous pool parties have attracted Tinseltown elite, including A- listers as Paris Hilton, AnnaLynne McCord and James Franco. Creating a “re-mix” of 60s influences, from oversized crystal chandeliers and vibrant shag rugs, to Andy Warhol pop art and an eclectic blend of retro furnishings, Riviera Palm Springs also boasts hundreds
of towering palms, sparkling pools, private cabanas and intimate poolside fire pits. In 2006, the property became a part of the Noble House family who purchased the property and gave the resort a $70 million modernization, including a luxurious spa, two sparkling swimming pools, signature fine dining and entertainment, 406 guest rooms and suites. Happy Hour has taken on a whole new meaning with the addition of first class entertainment booked by the well-known Shauna Aguirre who is bringing in the best bands of San Diego and L.A. also the Kona

Kai in San Diego and Portofino in Redondo Beach (Noble properties). She has 25 years in talent buying and special events. The Riviera has always been known for amazing food. The new infusion brings it up to that same level with first class entertainment. The “Hot as Hell” pool parties which are open to the public (locals events) include a band from 7-10 at the Bikini Bar. “Zulluu” the African world beat will be playing twice in Sept and twice in October. On Thursday nights from 7-10 specialty cocktails,
swimming, special pool foods and live music until Oct. 31. Sunday nights at the Sidebar patio has been a local’s favorite for years featuring Will Donato and the Art of Sax. Will and the band have consistently been voted the ‘best’ in the desert for several years. Will Donato is a national recording artist who has had a string of smooth Jazz Billboard hits. On Sunday August 25, 5-9 pm, Slim Man, national recording artist, vocalist, composer and entertainer (12 CDs) will be performing with J.D. Considine. (Rolling Stone Magazine) calls the Slim Man style... “...a near-perfect example of how jazz and soul can be combined as pop. Slim has played in some of the top venues and was at the Catalina Jazz Festival and Michael Paulo’s Temecula Wine and Music Festival in May. In September Patrick Yandall will be there, and in Oct. JJ Sanservino will be the special guest. On Labor Day weekend Todo Mundo Cumbio, World Beat Latin band will be on the patio Sat. night 7 to 10. As you enter the lobby at the Riviera there is another beautiful piano lounge and live entertainment during Happy Hour with drink and food specials from 6-8. Martin Ross who has toured the world plays Wed - Thurs. and J. Dean on piano on Fri -Sat. He is also a vocalist and plays guitar. From Adele to old school, he plays it all. Writer director Neill Blomkamp is a major filmmaking talent with an extraordinary gift for making vividly real impossible worlds of meaning and relevance. He dazzled us with the modestly budgeted DISTRICT 9. Now he broadens his vision with a similarly themed film of the haves and have-nots in a future that has a corrupt, orbiting, heavenly escape for the very rich one per-cent. It’s 2154, and the exploitation of the earth and the overpopulated poor has reached a point of no return with the 99% stuck on a ruined and ravaged earth while the elite orbit in an artificial world of pristine splendor and ease. Matt Damon is Max, a regular guy on earth in desperate need of medical care that the only orbiting space station can provide. Only problem is the stringent immigration laws of Elysium that are lethally enforced. Max takes on a dangerous assignment against the all-powerful forces of the space station. His own life -- and possibly that of the earth’s population -- hangs in the balance.

In the last years or so, there’s been a plethora of apocalyptic or alternate world movies, I can think of at least half a dozen. This sci-fi action film really worked for me. I love the notion that only two classes of people; that is, the super rich and the utterly impoverished remain. And of course a hero who risks everything. The biggest thing Blomkamp’s visually stunning and often thrilling film has going for it is the incredibly real world of the story. Never for a minute did I doubt what I saw on the big screen. The astonishing detail is ultra photo realistic and some of the action sequences are truly mesmerizing. When Blomkamp was asked if this movie was a future he envisioned, he said, “No. It is now.” Besides Damon, costars include Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga Diego Luna, Wagner Moura and William Fichtner. Recommended. Now playing at Cinemas Palme d’Or. NEW FOR THE HOME THEATER: SPRING BREAKERS Harmony Korine is a quirky, unflinching filmmaker. Have you seen KIDS, julien donkey-boy or GUMMO? Here he has concocted a dangerous hedonistic adventure about four girls, friends since grade school, who are now bored college dorm mates longing for some real fun. If they can save enough money for spring break, well, just think of the possibilities! But when they encounter rapper Alien (James Franco in a must see performance), dangerous new options open up. Just how far will the girls go – assuming, of course,

Gaiman begins his book with a quote from Maurice Sendak (Where the Wild Things Are) from a conversation with Art Spiegelman of The New Yorker, circa 1993. “I remember my own childhood vividly… I knew terrible things. But I knew I mustn’t let the adults know I knew. It would scare them.” Gaiman begins his story with a middleaged man returning to Sussex, England, for a funeral. He is drawn back to his childhood home and the events that haunt him. At age seven, the unnamed narrator is a bookish and lonely child. His family, struggling to make ends meet, takes in a boarder who commits suicide in the family car at the end of the lane. When the boy and his father go to retrieve the stolen car, the boy sees the dead body. A very different experience of death from the books he has read and the wax museum he has visited. While the police investigate the crime scene, he meets eleven year-old Lettie Hempstock, her mother and grandmother.
The Ocean At the end of the lane By Neil Gaiman Fiction
He quickly comes to realize these women are immortals, wise and magical. They tell him the suicide has unleashed an otherworld intruder who is compelled to invade the community and give the mortals what they want -- such as money and jobs, maybe even love and acceptance. In this story, these are not good things. Lettie’s mother and grandmother warn her that the entity may be too difficult for her to bind and send back to where it came. Lettie is young and may not posses the skills required to beat such a powerful entity. Confident she can, Lettie takes the boy with her and does her best. After a small battle, it seems Lettie has been successful. But the shape-shifting entity has lodged itself in the boy’s foot as a worm.

ON THE ROAD
Frankly, I was bored watching this nicely photographed and rather faithful adaptation of Jack Korouac’s iconic novel. Sadly, there is not much energy in the road trip of Sal, Dean and Marylou as they search for themselves. There’s an attempt to capture the tone of a post WWII beat culture that sometimes connects. But a lot of it seemed forced under the direction of Walter Salles, who gave us THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES, a pretentious film with a devoted following of Che devotees. The one surprising thing that stood out for me was the fully informed, even passionate, portrayal of Marylou by none
Matthew McConaughey is Mud, a fugitive who admits a murder, hiding on an otherwise deserted island on the Mississippi. He’s living in a boat stranded up a tree. Two fourteen year old boys, Ellis and Neckbone, stumble across him and an unlikely, dangerous, friendship triggers a memorable coming of age adventure that has a lot to say about the vagaries of love when Mud asks the boys to contact Juniper (Reese Witherspoon) Mud’s great on-again off-again love. This wonderfully atmospheric Southern drama has potent Twain DNA, but writer director Jeff Nichols manages to make it both contemporary and timeless. I thought not only of Huck and Tom but also Scout and Jem. This old-fashioned, highly suspenseful story is honest and poignant without being cloying. I was fully engaged and lost track of time -- so rare with movies these days. Don’t miss the terrific film form the writer director of equally compelling TAKE SHELTER. Highest recommendation. When the boy gets home, he extracts the “worm” -- part of it -- and his world changes overnight. His mother gets a job, his father gets a mistress and his sister gets a playmate. And the entity wants him out of the way -- locked up with the other immortals banned from this world. There are horrors he cannot explain to his parents. The boy and Lettie must do battle with the entity which ultimately requires a sacrifice. Like most young boys, he is weak and vulnerable. His parents are caught-up in their new world and the beautiful entity they perceive as Ursula Monkton, now resides in their home! The parents become obsessed, abusive and dangerous. The boy begins to see the world and his parents differently. His innocence quickly fades in this coming of age mythological story. Author Neil Gaiman never mentions the boy and family members by name. The reader doesn’t know whose funeral he attends. His father? It seems a very deliberate omission in this first person narrative. This method made me wonder how much Gaiman is writing about himself and his own childhood rather than a simple character story. I certainly cannot say if Gaiman had a supernatural experience, and the similarities may end with the age of the boy or the reminiscing man and the location of the story. Gaiman is British and 50 years old. The story takes place in an English village in the late 1960s.
But I am thinking that it’s more about what it’s like to be a bookish child, misunderstood and uncomfortable with the world yet to have an imagination that allows you to see a pond as big as an ocean and “see” other worlds. And what is it like to one day realize most adults do not nurture their imaginary worlds? This is what I find most fascinating about the writer Gaiman and his story The Ocean at the End of the Lane. Is he sharing something personal or not? No matter, it is a story that provokes intense childhood feelings of loss. Gaiman is the author of graphic novels, comic books, children books and adult fantasy novels. He has also written for film and television and is currently writing the narrative for a video game. Obviously he loves story and has never lost the child within. Or the things that haunt him. Did the unnamed boy become Neil Gaiman the author?

An Ode to Time Warner Cable
I
hate Time Warner Cable. It is not for the loss of CBS and Showtime channels - I have been a DirecTV customer for 15 years. And I have forgiven Time Warner Cable for years of home internet service that would go out randomly in the evening and not restart until the morning when someone at command central flipped a switch to restart internet to our neighborhood. I hate Time Warner Cable for its ‘Business Class’ service. You see, I worked on getting phone and internet service set up correctly with Time Warner Cable since... are you ready... Thanksgiving 2012! Only on August 9th were things totally fixed. Before I get to my story, you should know that Time Warner Cable made $7.65 billion in profits after tax last year while their CEO made $21 million before stock options and retirement benefits. This company is the classic example of a management team that makes 400 times its average employee. Don’t feel bad for CBS as their CEO earned $75 million last year excluding stock options and retirement benefits while the company made $3.65 billion.
The fight with CBS is about greed on both sides. CBS wants $2/month for you to have their broadcast network service, a doubling of what they currently get. And Time Warner Cable isn’t protecting you from high rates. If they were, they wouldn’t force you to take bundles of channels that you have no intention of ever watching. They wouldn’t try and force you to bundle phone, cable and internet to get a ‘good deal’. This is all about greed with no concern for you, me or most of their rank and file employees. Like a drug dealer, they feel that they have you. The average person watches 34 hours of television a week - 48 hours for seniors and half that for those under 18. The average person spent a similar amount of time on the internet. This is in part why their customer service is so bad and prices are so high. They have you. My saga started with a sales rep and his inability to input a phone transfer order correctly. This mistake took four months to fix and only occurred after I contacted the President’s office in New York City. Setting up voicemail took another eighteen weeks as no one at Time Warner
Gamer Girl
Cable wanted to fix their mistakes... or return phone calls. It took a random person on one of my customer service calls to fax the instructions to their voicemail system from a one-page guide affixed to her cubicle wall. Wouldn’t you think the Time Warner’s installation team would give this to you as part of the set-up? They just hook things up, as I was told - the sales rep is supposed to do this. Lastly, I had to get a static IP address for internet service. While the installers did their job, once again they had no information to guide me in setting up the system. While the local customer service number and Live Chat function were disconnected, I
eventually found a rep in Texas who advised me to “go to my ‘IT department.” When I informed her that I didn’t have one - I was told that Time Warner Cable “just turns it on.” For $95, I found a business that came out and fixed things in five minutes. A simple one page set of instructions on how to connect to a static IP number would have fixed things - something Time Warner Cable would not provide. Worth noting, they will not refund anything for the months of wrong service and aggravation - no one is authorized to do that. Time Warner Cable is a sales organization that does not care about you or me.

T
his multimillion dollar industry, that was simply based on booster packs and collectable cards, has gone into the video game industry with an amazing step by step dual based strategy game. The game in itself is pretty simple. You are a Planeswalker of one of 5 colors available. Each color represents a type of magic. Water, Death, Sun, Forest, and
Fire, each weld different creatures, spells, enchantments, and abilities, you use to bring your opponent’s life total, from 20, to 0. Your deck is usually custom built to your liking, and can play in so many different ways, but for noobs they do sell semi pre-built decks to get the hang of it. When Ming Bob and I first started playing in June, his first words were “Welcome to cardboard crack” and he
was right. Since then, we own about 5000 cards combined, the game on each console, and play weekly at Gameland USA in their small but fun tournaments. I also spent quite a bit of time playing at San Diego Comic Con, in a ball room of over 2500 people. So what makes this game so fun? Everything! If you like MMO’s and RPGs, this is the card version of yourself. You pretty much become the planeswalker you choose, and those spells and creatures you summon on your turn, can be as dark and grusome, or pure and angelic as you are. I personally like to cause chaos when I am playing, so I run mostly black decks. Zombies, demons, vampires, and creatures that don’t even have names in our world, that swallow you whole. LOVE IT! The video game version for the Xbox 360 is pretty addicting. Its the same concept, but you can’t run to Ebay to buy that rare card you need for your deck to
pwn everyone. The turn format is also really helpful, if you are new to the game, since there are quite a few steps in the turn process itself. I will say this though, its no where near as fun as a face to face duel. I welcome anyone who wants to learn how to play, or already knows, and wants to put their deck to the test against my Drowning Death deck! I am at Gameland USA every Friday night! You can pick up your very own MTG decks at major retailers, but I suggest Walmart, Target is way overpriced.

BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY LESSON 101
We are all going to die....SOME DAY
W
e all need to follow the motto People Don’t Plan to Fail, They Fail to Plan. We are all going to die some day so we must plan ahead for that day to protect our loved ones. We need to get our act together to protect our families. Without proper planning your Estate could Escheat (go to) the State of California. Some of the wealthiest and most famous people ever died without estate planning. “When I die it will be like a shipwreck. It will be worse than anyone imagines” Pablo Picasso predicted concerning the settlement of his estate … and he was right. When I have lectured on Estate Planning I usually quote Picasso. When he died in 1973, his personal
affairs were in chaos. He left no will or testament. He had 3 illegitimate children and was estranged from everyone in his family. His biographer, Arianna Huffington, wrote that his life was cluttered because he hated making any decision, however trivial. In reality Pablo Picasso did have a calculated estate plan… chaos and destruction. It worked to perfection. It is hard to believe that Walt Disney, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, JP Morgan and John D. Rockefeller (to name a few) died WITHOUT an estate plan. With their wealth they could have hired the best Attorney in the world. Proper planning ahead mandates you list the names of your accountant, lawyer, insurance agent, securities broker, and financial planner. You should also note your safety deposit box and note what is in it. With many people real their property (their home) is their biggest asset and we all need to list all of the property we own as well as all our security accounts. We should designate whether the accounts are owned in an individual name or in some other fashion. If you own a corporation or partnership those documents relating to that entity should be included as well as your savings
and checking account information. If there is a buy sell agreement it must be signed not only by the parties involved but by the spouses too! We should also look at our life insurance and determine who the owner is and who is insured as well as confirming the beneficiary…and whether we have done this correctly? If you draft a will and make a Specific Bequest of your $500,000 Aston Martin to your son and $500,000 in cash to your daughter then what happens if you sold the car before you pass away. The law considers it gone because it was a Specific Bequest . Since it is no longer there the son gets nothing….but your daughter still gets her $500,000. Your personal property of jewelry, your collections and cars should also be listed. Once you do all this where do you keep the Original Estate Planning documents? It should be some place where your family
What is a Mello Roos?
M
y virtual email bag with questions submitted by CV Weekly readers has doubled in the past month from one to two… so in order to keep up with this flood of inquiries this week I will answer the one question that actually involves real estate. What is a Mello Roos? In 1978 the voters of California passed the now famous Proposition 13 which restricted the ability of local governments to raise property taxes. In order to get around the provisions of Proposition 13, in 1982 State Senator Henry J. Mello and State Assemblyman Mike Roos co-authored the Community Facilities Act which allows local governments the right to form Community Facilities Districts (CFDs) which are also known as Mello-Roos Districts named after the co-authors of the act. These districts are able to raise funds for the development of public improvements (such as streets, water, sewage and drainage, electricity, infrastructure and even schools and parks) and services (such as police, fire and paramedics) from the sale of taxexempt bonds. New development, such as a large tract of new homes, requires new streets,

bonds! This can make a huge difference in a buyer’s monthly payment and is also a factor in qualifying for a new loan as these costs are included when calculating a buyer’s qualifying ratios. In many cases, home sale prices will be less for homes in CFDs than for comparable homes not located in CFDs because of this. As of January 1, 2002 California law requires that all California property owners furnish a notice of special assessment to buyers PRIOR TO CLOSING ESCROW if their property is located in a CFD and subject to assessment installments. Sellers must fully disclose which special tax and or assessment district a property lies in and provide a detailed breakdown of all costs associated with them. Your agent can guide you through this process, but you should ask BEFORE you make an offer on any home if the property is located in a Community
Safety Tips
S
chool is soon starting for many of our schools and one of our first lessons is “School Safety 101” says Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna. It’s important to use extra caution while driving as excited students will be walking, bicycling, driving, riding buses and may not be paying attention while traveling to and from school. Here are some safety reminders to keep in mind and share with others! It is illegal to pass a school bus that is stopped to load or unload children. School buses use yellow flashing lights to alert motorists that they are preparing to stop to load or unload children. Red flashing lights and an extended stop sign arm signals to motorists that the bus is stopped and children are getting on or off the bus. The area 10 feet around a school bus is where children are in the most danger of being hit. Stop your car far enough from the bus to allow children the necessary space to safely enter and exit the bus. Be alert. Children are unpredictable. Children walking to or from their bus are usually very comfortable with

utilities, storm drains etc. The developers of these new projects have two ways of paying for these improvements. They can either pay for them with their own money (or borrowed funds in a construction loan), in which case they will include these costs in the price of their new homes when they sell them to their homebuyers; or, they can form a CFD (or Mello-Roos district) and pass the obligation of paying off the bonds used to finance the improvements to their new homebuyers. If a home is sold with a CFD Bond on it, then the homeowner usually pays off the bond with their semi-annual property tax bill over the next 20 to 30 years. Here in the Coachella Valley we have several newer developments that were built in CFDs and have CFD Bonds that are paid off by individual homeowners in their property tax bills. Specifically, most of the tracts of homes north of I-10 in Indio in the general area known as Shadow Hills were built with CFD bonds. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but it is a very important thing to be aware of before deciding to purchase a home in this area, or any other area where there may be a CFD/Mello-Roos bond. In the Shadow Hills Area, homes with CFD bonds pay around $200.00 to $250.00 PER MONTH more for their property taxes than homes that do not have CFD/Mello-Roos
can find it for processing. These are just a few of the things we need to consider to properly protect your family………and we all want to do just that. Funding District or Mello-Roos District. In addition, for homes located in the Shadow Hills area of Indio you can go online to the City of Indio’s website at www.indio.org and search “CFD” to learn more about their CFD districts. This week’s real estate tip: It is important for homeowners in CFDs to pay their property tax bills on time! The CFD has the right (and if bonds are issued, the obligation) to foreclose on a property when special taxes are delinquent for over 90 days! This will include the costs of collection and penalties and is different than the 5 year waiting period for non-payment of regular property taxes. their surroundings. This makes them more likely to take risks, ignore hazards, or fail to look both ways when crossing the street. Drivers should not block the crosswalk when stopped at a red light or waiting to make a turn. Do not stop with a portion of your vehicle over the crosswalk. In a school zone when a warning flasher or flashers are blinking, you must stop to yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a marked crosswalk or at an intersection with no marked crosswalk. Children are the least predictable pedestrians and the most difficult to see. Take extra care to look out for children not only in school zones, but also in residential areas, playgrounds, and parks. Don’t honk your horn, rev your engine, or do anything to rush or scare a pedestrian in front of your car, even if you have the legal right-of-way. On most roadways, bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as other roadway users and often share the same lane, but bicycles can be hard to see. The riders are exposed and easily injured in a collision. Now that’s just the first lesson says Chief DiGiovanna. We have a lot more schooling on Safety! S
ince opening just a year and a half ago, the Savory Spice Shop on El Paseo in Palm Desert has already made a huge impact in the culinary world, and not just for the professionals. Yes, on any given day one might see a local chef smelling, tasting, and buying herbs and spices, but the store caters to the nonprofessionals as well. With more than 400 individual spices and over 120 blends, the store stocks everything from garlic and a variety of salts, to the unexpected and difficult to find such as pomegranate molasses, dried mushrooms and saffron. There is a wall of chilies with more than two dozen from which to choose. The most popular chile is the Ancho, ranking just a one on a heat scale of one to ten. For heat lovers, the store also carries the two hottest chilies commercially available, the world record holding Ghost and Scorpion chilies, ranking a ten plus on the scale. New on the shelf this summer are
“Recipes To Go” which include a recipe card and premeasured ingredients for one-stop shopping. There is a “Recipe To Go” for a Peruvian Turkey Burger and another for Smoked Black Pepper Ranch Dressing ready to mix in a reusable glass jar, to name a few. The store also recently began carrying locally produced products such as walnut butter, balsamic reductions, and spicy jams. The beauty of the Savory Spice Shop is that one can purchase as little as a half-an-ounce or up to pounds of any herb or spice. There’s no need to buy an entire bottle if you just need a pinch, and the ability to purchase small quantities encourages experimentation in cooking. The Savory Spice Shop is located at 73-399 El Paseo, Palm Desert and is open daily. For more information call 760-346-4372.

Boxing At Morongo ESPN Fight Night Battles ShoBox For Friday Entertainment
I
’ve covered many Golden Boy Promotions Productions at Fantasy Springs Resort and they’re always entertaining with some solid fights and plenty of action. On Aug 12th, Sugar Shane Mosley brought the star power to the Coachella Valley and in typical big-time-star fashion, had everyone in attendance in awe. The big fight that night was between undefeated American heavyweight Deontay Wilder (29-0, 29 Kos) and former heavyweight champion, Sergei Liakhovich (25-6). Wilder was on my radio show, “Buehler’s Day Off” Friday and when I asked him what his post-fight meal would be he responded by saying he wasn’t sure who his next opponent was. I was asking if he’d splurge on pizza, he thought I was asking which unfortunate ring-fellow he’d chew up next. When that conversation happened, knowing all 28 of Wilder’s victories had been knockouts, I figured that streak would continue (and it did), so I headed west to Morongo where they had ESPN Friday Night Fights. A step down from Shobox in terms of publicity and cache, but the fights I saw were certainly worth the price of admission. SIDENOTE: It’s fascinating how much rich boxing we have in this community. Within 25 miles of Cook Street either way on the I-10, you can find multiple real contenders fighting on the same night. Not sure there’s many other communities that boast that same exposure. This was my first fight night at Morongo, and it won’t be my last. The crowd was fantastic, very boisterous and rang with approval for their favorite fighters. The concessions stand (always a key to a great night) was stocked with your typical fight night food (think tailgating) and also featured street tacos, pulled pork and other interesting choices. And most importantly, the caliber of fights kept my attention all night (even with a full slate of NFL preseason games on).
26
The main event was two lightweights, both with a lot on the line. Rustam Nugaev beat Jose Hernandez in what was the fight of the night, not for it’s longevity, but for it’s speed. The fight only lasted until the 5th round when Hernandez, who had to drop significant weight to fight at 136 was reportedly seriously dehydrated before weigh-ins and most boxing experts thought he might last 4 rounds. He stretched it out and made a fast-paced statement, the kid has the moxy to be a star. Nugaev was the typical Russian tough guy who would get hit hard, then return with a flurry of fists. He’s 25-6 now and someone to pay attention to. Overall, it was great to visit another boxing venue and marvel at the strength of the sport in the Coachella Valley. Incidentally, Fantasy Springs Resort will be hosting another ShoBox SPECIAL EDITION event on September 6th. So if you missed the last one, there’s another coming, with more heavyweights. Julie Buehler hosts the Coachella Valley’s most popular sports talk radio show, “Buehler’s Day Off” every day from 1-4 on 1010 KXPS, the valley’s all sports station. She’s an avid gym rat, slightly sarcastic and more likely to recite Steve Young’s career passing stats than American Idol winners. Tune in M-F 1-4 pst at www.team1010. com or watch the show on Ustream.

YOGAmagine POSES & THEIR MEANING,PART THREE nearly one thousand distinct
I
yoga poses. My series of recent articles could be endless. The previous two weeks of articles have been descriptions of yoga poses (asanas). The given names and physical postures draw awareness to our natural habitat relating to the archetypes of animals, nature, and tools. Originally, the postures names are in Sanskrit. Our westernized culture respects the Sanskrit language but better identifies with English given names and descriptions of the postures. Yoga allows us to gain flexibility, strength, and improves self-esteem. Three postures that can improve your confidence are the three Warriors (Virabhadrasana, 1, 2 & 3). The warrior one, two and three postures symbolize strength and confidence like a warrior. Each warrior is different yet important to your practice. Warrior poses involves full body integration, awareness, and stability. When practiced properly each warrior can make you stronger physically and mentally.
The Do’s and Do Not’s of Warrior Postures Warrior one tones the legs and buttocks, opens tight hips flexors, strengthens thigh muscles (quadriceps) and shoulders. Don’t: A short stance in warrior one will not allow you to reap the benefits of this posture and you could injure yourself. A short stance places the knee over the front ankle. Excessive pressure is placed on the knee and this is dangerous. You will miss the benefit of the quadriceps gaining strength. Do: Coming into Warrior one from Downward Facing Dog, step one foot forward and place in between your hands. If you are tight in your hamstrings or calves you may need to pick up your foot and place
in between your hands. Direct the front knee over the ankle, relax the back foot down into your mat at a 45 degree angle, look for a heel to heel alignment, raise your arms above your head, and stay lunged into the front knee. Warrior two also tones and strengthens legs, opens the hip flexors, improves abdominal strength, and gives length to the spine. Don’t: A short stance as in warrior one can be dangerous. Don’t allow the outer edge of the back foot to lift off your mat. Keep the back leg strong and straight (don’t bend the back knee) Do: Keep a wide stance (same as a warrior one). Keep a lunge in the front knee. Firm both legs. Alignment is heel to arch (front heel aligns with back arch). Arms reach out to the side in line with your legs and away from your body. Keep torso lifted. Warrior three helps improve balance. The standing on one leg and extending the other leg behind you off the floor helps build strength into the standing leg. The abdominals engage and your breath calms and centers you. Begin at the top of your mat in mountain pose, Tadasana. Place your hands on your hips and begin to extend one leg behind you while simultaneously shifting the torso forward. Don’t: Do not be fearful while balancing on one leg. It does not matter how high your leg raises behind you. This is a pose that requires steadiness and practice. Do: Stay confident like a warrior. Fixate your gaze on focal point. Engage the extended and standing leg. Strengthen the abdominals and breathe. It is with great hope the brief overview and description of the postures will encourage you to seek a yoga class near you. It is very important to seek a teacher/studio who has excellent teaching credentials, listens to your needs, and cares about their students. FREE WILL ASTROLOGY
Week of August 15
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but on building the new.” When I came across that quote while surfing the Web, I felt that it jibed perfectly with the astrological omens that are currently in play for you. Every website I consulted agreed that the speaker of this wisdom was Socrates, but I thought the language sounded too contemporary to have been uttered by a Greek philosopher who died 2,400 years ago. After a bit of research, I found the real source: a character named Socrates in Way of the Peaceful Warrior, a New Age self-help book by Dan Millman. I hope this doesn’t dilute the impact of the quote for you, Leo. For now, it is crucial that you not get bogged down in quarreling and brawling. You need to devote all your energy to creating the future. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Do you know that you are a host for more than 10,000 different species of microorganisms? Many of them are bacteria that perform functions essential to your health. So the stunning fact of the matter is that a large number of life forms share your body and constantly help you in ways about which you have no conscious awareness. Might there be other examples of you collecting benefits from unknown sources? Well, do you know who is responsible for providing you with the water and electricity you use? Who sewed your clothes and made your medicine? Who built the roads and buildings you use? This is an excellent time to take inventory of all the assistance, much of it anonymous, that you are so fortunate to receive. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): More often than not, your fine mind does a competent job of defining the problems that need solving. It comes up with concise questions that lead you in the right direction to find useful clues. It gathers evidence crisply and it makes smart adjustments as the situation evolves. But after studying the astrological factors currently at work, I’m a little concerned that your usually fine mind might temporarily be prone to suffering from the dreaded malady known as paralysis through over-analysis. To steer yourself away from that possibility, keep checking in with your body and your feelings to see what alternate truths they may have to tell you. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): By the standards of people who don’t know you well, the triumph you achieve in the coming days might seem modest. But I think it will actually be pretty dramatic. Here’s my only concern: There’s a slight danger you will get grandiose or even a bit arrogant in the aftermath of your victory. You could also get peeved at those who don’t see it for the major achievement it is. Now that I’ve given you this warning, though, I’m hoping you will avoid that fate. Instead you will celebrate your win with humble grace, feeling gratitude for all the help you got long the way. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): “All my life, my heart has yearned for a thing I cannot name.” So said French writer André Breton. I suspect that many of us feel the same way, which is kind of depressing. But the good news for you, Sagittarius, is that there will be times in the coming months when you will get as close to naming that mysterious thing as you have ever gotten. On more than a few occasions, you may be able to get a clear glimpse of its true nature. Now and then you might even be fully united with it. One of those moments could come soon. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): The *Paris Review* did a story on novelist William Gass. The interviewer asked him why he wrote his books. That was “a very dumb question,” he sneered. Nevertheless, he answered it, saying, “I write because I hate. A lot. Hard.” In other words, his primary motivations for expressing himself creatively were loathing, malice, and hostility. I beg you not to use him as your role model, Capricorn. Not now. Not ever. But especially now. It is essential to your long-term health and wealth that you not be driven by hate in the coming weeks. Just the opposite, in fact: The more you are driven by love and generosity, the better chance you will have of launching a lucky streak that will last quite a while.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): “Until we have seen someone’s darkness, we don’t really know who they are,” said author Marianne Williamson. “Until we have forgiven someone’s darkness, we don’t really know what love is.” Your assignment, Aquarius, is to seek out the deepest possible understanding of these truths. To do that, you will have to identify the unripe, shadowy qualities of the people who are most important to you. And then you will have to find it in your smart heart to love them for their unripe, shadowy qualities almost as much as you do for their shiny, beautiful qualities. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Aldous Huxley was the renowned 20th-century intellectual who wrote the book Brave New World, a dystopian vision of the future. Later in his life he came to regret one thing: how “preposterously serious” he had been when he was younger. “There are quicksands all about you, sucking at your feet,” he ruminated, “trying to suck you down into fear and self-pity and despair. That’s why you must walk so lightly. Lightly, my darling . . . Learn to do everything lightly. Yes, feel lightly even though you’re feeling deeply.” I would love for you to put this counsel at the top of your priority list for the next ten months, darling Pisces. Maybe even write it out on a piece of paper and tape it to your bathroom mirror. ARIES (March 21-April 19): Normally, International CAPS LOCK DAY happens only once a year, on June 28. But in alignment with your current astrological omens, you have been granted the right to observe the next seven days as your own personal International CAPS LOCK DAYS. That means you will probably be forgiven and tolerated if use OVERHEATED ORATORY and leap to THUNDEROUS CONCLUSIONS and engage in MELODRAMATIC GESTURES. You may even be thanked -- although it’s important to note that the gratitude you receive may only come later, AFTER THE DUST HAS SETTLED. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): William Turner was a 19th-century English landscape painter born under the sign of Taurus. His aim was not to capture scenes in realistic detail but rather to convey the emotional impact they made on him. He testified that on one occasion he had himself tied to the mast of a ship during a snowstorm so that he could experience its full effects firsthand. The result was “Snow Storm - Steam-Boat off a Harbor’s Mouth,” a painting composed mostly of tempestuous swirls. What would be the equivalent for you, Taurus? I’m trying to think of a way you could be perfectly safe as you treated yourself to an up-close encounter with elemental energies. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Some years back, the Greek government launched a huge anti-smoking campaign. In response, cigarette sales spiked dramatically. When my daughter was six years old, I initiated a crusade to ban Barbie dolls from our home forever. Soon she was ripping out pictures of the accursed anti-feminist icon from toy catalogs and leaving them on my desk. With these events in mind, I’m feeling cautious about trying to talk you into formulating a five-year master plan. Maybe instead I should encourage you to think small and obsess on transitory wishes. CANCER (June 21-July 22): “Wings are a constraint that makes it possible to fly,” the Canadian poet Robert Bringhurst reminds us. That will be a good principle for you to keep in mind during your own adventures during the coming weeks. I suspect that any liberation you are able to achieve will come as the result of intense discipline. To the degree that you cultivate the very finest limitations, you will earn the right and the power to transcend inhibitions that have been holding you down. Crystal Fantasy in Palm Springs Gifts and Gallery and Enlightenment Center
F
or those of us who love all things metaphysical, there is a wonderful store in Palm Springs called Crystal Fantasy that is my favorite. It incorporates gifts and a gallery, and hosts events for enlightenment. For the last 27 years owner Joy Meredith has been at the forefront of bringing in classes, speakers and enlightenment oriented events. There is an amazing selection of beautiful crystals in various sizes, along with jewelry even some with special ‘powers’. I stop by weekly to get a reading with my favorite Donna J. Sacks a channeler who works with the angels and guides and accesses the Akashic Records. I find her to be incredibly accurate and she’s helped me through her insight and guidance of the other realms. I’ve even been able to communicate with my late husband through her as she has mediumship abilities as well. She is highly ethical and very much in touch with the other side. She has also been a ‘contactee’ and was on board a space craft where she was “tagged” with a triangular shaped chip in her ear which was verified by a doctor. She just held a class on how to contact UFO intelligences with another reader Earl Nissen and is putting together some classes for the fall as well. There are numerous readers who are available at Crystal Fantasy. There is no charge however, a ‘gift’ is appreciated. There are different readers daily and on the weekend there are Free Spiritual Sampler Weekends. Patrick Harrington - 3rd Generation Psychic Medium Donna Sacks - Channeler, Angels & Guides, Akashic Records Mario Donato - Tarot, Astrology, Palmistry (English, Spanish) Earl Nissen - Triple Tarot, Reiki Master (English, Spanishl) Ronda Lynn - Life Path, Animal Spirit Cards, Numerology Tommy Ross - The Art of Tarot
Anni Shen - Tarot, Chinese Astrology (English, Mandarin) Rev. Harriet Guttman - Spiritual Counseling, Psychic Tarot Gitte Europa - Crystal, Reiki, Energy Healer (English, German) Lord Lugh - Magick Tarot (English, French, Spanish) Raven - Sacred Totems and Elements (English, Spanish) This runs from 12-8 on Saturday and Sundays 12- 6. I’ve also been to Mario Donato who I think is excellent. There’s something for everyone to help you get answers to questions you may have. On October 5-6 they are having their 5th Annual PS Body Mind Spirit Weekend. Every first Friday there is an Art Walk from 6-9 pm. When I stopped in last Saturday there was a Free session on the Lemurian Crystal Healing Bed. This was an amazing experience. It’s 500 lbs of Selenite and has healing properties. It’s used to open the etheric body as well as the chakras. I found that some mild nausea that I had been feeling for a couple of days went away during the session. I also slept until 9:30 Sunday morning something I never do. Last night I was still going at midnight which is highly unusual for me. It included a guided mediation. It’s claimed to heal on all levels. She is planning to come back monthly. I enjoy my time at this wonderful place. I hope you will too. For more info visit www.crystalfantasy.com Located at 268 N. Dr. Peter, I’m a woman in my late 40’s, I’ve been having a lot of night sweats lately and difficulty sleeping. I don’t think I’m in menopause because I’m still having my menstrual period, what’s going on? -Lori, Cathedral City
- hot flashes and difficulty sleeping - mood changes - vaginal and bladder problems causing dryness and incontinence - decreased libido - bone loss - weight gain The amount of symptoms and severity can vary from one woman to another and the perimenopausal period can last sometimes up to 10 years. I often tell my patients to ask their mother’s when they went through “the age” to get a better idea of what’s in store for them.
Dr. Peter, I exercise regularly, eat right and feel I get enough sleep, but in the past few years I’ve noticed increasing fatigue, loss of sex drive and sometimes feeling depressed. I’m only 42, is there such a thing as “male menopause”? - TERRY, INDIO Terry, by definition, no, men do not go through menopause. But as men get older, their testosterone levels start to decrease and may start to become symptomatic even in their late 30’s or early 40’s. Symptom severity can vary and the onset can become gradual. This is known as “andropause”. Symptoms may vary from person to person, along with the age of onset. Common symptoms of men going through andopause include: - low sex drive - erectile dysfunction - lack of energy - depression - irritability and mood swings - loss of strength or muscle mass
- increased body fat If you believe you are having the symptoms of perimenopause, women should consult with their gynecologist and/ or their primary care physician. If you are a male and think you are going through andropause, consult with your primary care physician or a urologist. A proper history and physical exam with lab testing will help with the diagnosis. There is treatment available for these conditions and may involve the use of hormone therapies. I do perform evaluation and treatment of these conditions, so you can also contact my office for an appointment. I will explore treatment options in future articles.

y client sighed heavily as he took a seat in the office lamenting over the multiple projects needing attention and his lack of motivation to tackle anything. I nodded as it was not unusual in my practice to have clients voice that particular frustration. Certainly we all go through periods of diminished energy and experience feelings of not being “up” for the challenge. Long ago I learned a partial remedy for combating inertia is, as Woody Allen so aptly expressed it, “just showing up.” The fact that the young man did arrive for his scheduled coaching session was indeed a start. Reminding him of this fact, I also shared with him the story of a baseball player who developed a system to pull himself out of a lethargic funk and ready both mind and body for a win. This pitcher developed a routine that consisted of jogging back and forth on the field, stretching hips and hamstrings, throwing some light warm-up pitches from the mound and then heading back to the dugout. He diligently performed these sequenced movements prior to every game. The routine not only succeeded in getting his body warmed up, it also coaxed out a positive attitude resulting in his pregame focused mentality. Most of us do not bound out of bed with the enthusiasm of a four year old at the beach. Our mind and bodies often need a little prodding to get the message that there

is work to be done. As adults, establishing a rhythmic series of steps helps inspire action. A friend of mine jumps out of bed and into her running shoes to convince her feet that sooner or later they are heading to the gym. I go through an orchestrated dance when arriving at my desk each morning strong cup of coffee in hand. Rather than immediately diving into a complex project I warm up by reviewing my schedule, reading an inspirational blog or two and then attending to some mundane administrative tasks. The process takes about twenty minutes and by that time I am alert and ready to take on the day. There are those who may dispute the utter simplicity of just showing up and going through the motions. But just as a prima ballerina warms up at the barre with a series of plies and ronds de james prior taking the floor, or a chef preps food before creating a gourmet entrée, we all need a little windup routine before we can knock one out of the ballpark.

Lori, menopause is the permanent end of menstruation and fertility, defined as occurring 12 months after your last menstrual period. It can happen in your 40’s or 50’s, the average age in the U.S. being 51. So, by definition, you are not in menopause. You are most likely transitioning into menopause, the time period referred to as “perimenopause”. During perimenopause, the level of estrogen (the main female hormone) rises and falls unevenly. This fluctuation in estrogen causes irregular menstrual periods and may cause symptoms of :
