Dali’s Llama’s “Wild Rumpus” Anniversary Show

n Saturday, October 5, the Palms Restaurant indoor/outdoor venue in 29 Palms will risk utter incineration as they play host to the heaviest, grittiest collection of the most nakedly honest and raw rock and roll to shake the desert fault line since the early incarnation of generator parties. The instigators of this epic opus are the very founders of a genre much overlooked by locals, and nearly worshiped by music lovers in Germany, Norway and the heartier parts of Europe. Dali’s Llama founders and co-creators, Erica and Zach Huskey, will be celebrating 20 years of creative tenacity, integrity and determination along with many of their musical cohorts. I sat at a table sipping coffee with this couple, a bit intimidated at first as I weighed in the fact that I was talking to people who have been completely sold out to their craft for decades. Nearly 30 years ago, a 14 year old Zach began fortifying the desert music scene along with fellow band-mates when he and any one of his friends who looked 18 and old enough to rent out the old J.C. Frey building to play in. Always a pioneer and entrepreneur in the “Do it Yourself” fashion, Zach even began publishing a music magazine, on his parents xerox machine. He could be seen handing them out to anyone with green hair or who showed any other signs of interest in his music. He gave it out for free, in-spite of the .25 cent price handwritten on the cover. You can still see that punk kid staring back at you through his steely blue eyes. He and his best friend turned wife (who by the way is still very

internet phone directory. We were writing down addresses from the back of magazines. Zach: There weren’t a lot of outlets to get your music out there. There were only the major labels and few independent labels at the time. We were one of the only bands down here that had a CD out. Everything was on 2” tape just like the 70’s. It was expensive. We limited time spent on an album to 3-4 days in the studio because it was out of our pocket. Erica: Now the market is over saturated. It’s common for people to do their own. Zach: Now, because we’ve been at it so long, we are a more familiar name in the market. A lot of our stuff is sold overseas. The changes have made things a lot easier when someone gets a hold of us and says, ‘We’re from Norway; how much for the album?’ Erica: Now I have people calling me asking ME how to do it! Zach: There’s people that have been on labels all their life who are doing it themselves now. They call and ask, ‘How’d you do the printing? Where’s the mastering done? I won’t mention any names, but these are some well-known people. I always tell them, ‘Don’t ask me, I just write the

music’ and hand the phone to Erica. I’m a great delegator (he grins). We’ve produced 10 albums in 20 years, all CDs. At this show, we’re going to have our first 12” vinyl available; 20 Years Underground. You might call it our non-greatest ever hits. Can you explain why you are so embraced overseas, and somewhat unrecognized here in the states? Have you ever thought of touring out there? Zach: Germany, England and Norway just seem to like heavier stuff, and to them, the desert is mythical to them - it’s this magical, mythical, sandy place. They love the D-tuned, doom rock, Black Sabbath influenced rock like Electric Wizard and The Obsessed. We have all these weird networking connections there because of the people we know playing out there. We’ve thought about touring, but we’ve got kids and a house and a job... if the opportunity paid for itself we would go. Maybe someday. The priority has always been putting the music out, and playing on the west coast as much as we can including festivals.

Dali’s Llama has forged the path in the music industry with your “Do It Yourself” (DIY) approach since your very first record. How has the industry changed and affected what you do now? Erica: When we started out there was no

Out of all the CDs you’ve produced, including your solo CDs and jazz experiments, do you have a favorite album? Erica: That’s a tough question because each release is a document of that time, that life experience. Zach: From the early 90s, Creative Space got a lot of attention. We don’t play anything off of it in our shows, but people still seem to ask for it for movies. Fallen Dunes from 5 years ago turned out pretty good, and we do a lot of songs off of that one. A few years ago, after a run of our music being really heavy, we came out with an album, Howl Do You Do, that was pretty much just for fun, paying homage to the music I loved when I was a kid. I was really into early Punk - bands like The Nuggets, The Sonics and The Seeds, and we decided to do a tribute album with all our own original music. That was a fun album. We didn’t know how it would be received. Critics loved that album. At this point critics seem to like everything we do. I guess that’s the cool part about having been around so long. When we first started out, we couldn’t even get a review. We were like, ‘Thanks! Glad you liked it. We won’t be doing it again, but thanks.’ Erica: Zach writes all the music so it’s all a reflection of what he was feeling during that time. Zach: Yeah. After Fall on Dunes, Erica was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had to have the full surgery, chemo, radiation.... we went through a year of that. So when we went into record the album that I had written during that time and listened to it, we thought, ‘Wow that came out dark.’ Raw is Real is from that album and is one of the heaviest tunes we’ve ever done. So the one after that was all about having fun. Erica: Autumn Woods goes back to a heavier sound, but it’s not nearly as dark. Zach writes a lot of songs... he’ll have 25 songs and we’ll have to narrow it down. But the best songs he’s written are when he goes out to the desert to write. Zach: I’m in a canyon; I got nothing else to do for the rest of the day; I’ve got my guitar, my coffee my water, my cigarettes a

piece of paper and a pencil. If I write this, lay down and never wake up again, then just like all the bones I find around this place, it sort of gives me a sense of the impermanence of things. The harsh elements aren’t easy on the animals and plants, and it makes you realize you live you die and you got to accept it. A lot of people are in denial of that and surround themselves with noise and accomplishments. Erica always gives me crap about not having a cell phone. But if I want to get lost, what’s the point. What is the driving force that keeps you guys ever painstakingly at it despite the lack of fanfare and big money and in-spite of all the crap this business of music can throw at you? Zach: She tries to quit all the time! (laughing) Erica: (embarrassed) Not so much the playing, but the business aspect. If we were just playing shows, it would be fine. It’s always figuring out accounting, the social media stuff, deciding what to spend against what we make, what percentage to accept to release a song for a movie....It’s not like you go to work and come home and you’re off. It’s ever present. Zach: Then add kids to the mix. Both kids do music... and go figure, one plays bass and one plays guitar and they both write. Zane my youngest, has a band with me on bass and Dali’s drummer Craig called Hit It and he’s singing and playing guitar. Now Erica’s having to do the Facebook page for that band. Sage, the older one has already put out an album with his band, and guess who helped with that all the way down to the album cover. Erica: Who else is going to care enough? I guess, to answer your question, the driving force is to document where we’re at and where we’ve been. We can play it live, but if we don’t put it out in a fixed form, it’s just lost. Zach: I write songs like an addiction. I’m going to do it anyway. To find people who like what we’re writing and want to play it, that’s totally fun. To record in a way where I can show it to my kids and say that’s where we were at. The driving force is nothing as grand as showing something to the world. Anger is a great motivating factor, and when you hear shit that’s getting money, it makes you want to go even more pure and say, ‘Alright, fuck you! Check this out.’ And because we have our own label, we can. There’s nobody there to tell us we can’t. How do you make being married and in a band together work when most bands and marriages don’t last longer than 18 months?

Zach: We were best friends in high school. I was playing shows in LA with other bands and we were doing well; playing shows with Rage Against the Machine, White Zombie and Stone Temple Morons. We’d do OK, but then I’d get burnt out or the bass player would quit. I got to thinking, ‘Wouldn’t it be great if your best friend who became your wife learned how to play bass? Then it would be two people versus the rest of them!’ Erica: Our first show playing together was with the Hickups and Sean Wheeler. Zach: We go at it and stuff, but when we sit back and put it in perspective, you just have to laugh at it. In music, something weird is always going to happen eventually, and you’ll have that opportunity to get pissed and then start laughing at it. What are some of your favorite albums from other desert rockers? Zach: There’s a few people that are staples in this music scene: Alfredo Hernandez - you want to talk about what desert rock is? You don’t have to talk about it, just go see guys like Alfredo Hernandez, Mario Lalli, Herb Lienau, Scott Reeder and Sean Wheeler. We all grew up together, experienced the same stuff, the same drugs.... We’ve seen them (other bands) come and go. I guess one of my favorite albums is the Kyuss album with Alfredo and Scott on it; And The Circus Leaves Town. They just add a certain element to it that’s great. That was a great decision by Josh Homme to have those two guys on that album. The Hellions are a good band. They’re good friends of ours. They need to put out an album. They have great songs, they need to document them. Other younger bands that I like are Deadend Paradox, Red Sanz, You Know Who, Fever dog, Blasting Echo and of course, Dunebilly (when they play adult songs) and Hot Beat Pu$$y Fiend is another. (note from the writer: Zach is NOT a fan of Arcade Fire. His son is. Imagine discussions at the dinner table and say a little prayer for Erica) Zach: The whole scene down here was generated from punk rock. You were 14 and when something pissed you off you wrote about it. You didn’t mention names you just got it off your chest. You channeled that anger into your music. The Who’s, Live at Leeds was the greatest album of all time. So aggressive but so intelligent. It’s what heavy metal wants to be. Neil Young’s Crazy Horse... every note is just a gem. Sabbath is one of those things - it’s dark and you feel

it with those riffs. The idea of Dali’s Llama now a days, is to put the he improvisation of Crazy Horse, the awesome riffs of Black Sabbath with a little bit of the brain power of The Who’s, Pete Townshend. Dali’s Llama today, is Zach Huskey on guitar and vocals, Erica Huskey on bass, Craig Brown on drums and Joe Wangler on guitar. To experience their music to the fullest, with its thundering dark tones and un-obliterated aggression, pounding its way into your psyche and emotions, you MUST see them live. This rock-buffet will be served at its hottest for only $5, and is likely to be all you can handle. As Zach says, “I don’t care about your delicate sensibilities or what you’re trying to say to that girl, we are here to play.” They will also be showing a big chunk of the music documentary “Lo Sound Desert”, following the rock fest. “We watched it for the first time and thought, ‘Holy shit, that’s awesome!’ It starts a year or two before I started playing,” says Zach. “It starts with the early generator parties. There are people in the film that aren’t even musicians. They were just there supporting the bands. We will be showing it outside under the stars for free after all the bands play. There’s lots of free camping. Destroying the Desert

are more likely to incinerate the Barn than merely rock it. Leading the assault is the newly infused San Bernardino based band, Contortion. Don’t try listening to these guys on your stupid little iPhone... it’s likely to blow up in your

face and catch your hair on fire. Break out the woofers and the tweeters and experience the dizzying riffs keeping incredulous time with the humanly impossible tight rhythm section. Idiot Box will own any hard core metal fan at the first roar of lead singer, Brian Stone’s surreal melodic, throat scorching rant. With his dark haunting, face shredding vocals a top pulse altering riffs and rhythms, this band offers a musical dialog of pure intelligent rage. Though the band in its current configuration and delivery is fairly new, the decade of experience together and apart brings this band back together (with a few personnel changes) stronger and more intrinsic than before. Brian, having traded So Cal for Hawaii, got drawn back to the mainland with a call to play guitar for the well-known band, Mower. After touring with them for a couple of years, Brian reunited with his previous drummer, Nick Jackson for an annual show. This was a show they and the previous Contortion members rarely missed as it raises funds for the son of their original bass player who was killed. With Mower on what was to be a permanent hiatus, Brian and Nick revamped the band with new players and new material with Moses Tovar on guitar and Brett Reynolds on bass. Impressed with themselves and the new music, Moses and Brett were gungho about getting bookings. “I was hesitant. I used to be called the ‘Band Nazi’ before because once I get my mind set I don’t let anything stand in my way,” said Stone. “I was a bit guarded, but their enthusiasm became my enthusiasm. We recorded an album that was mixed and mastered by Darian Rundall. It was the most money we ever spent but it was worth it. The album released in May and we’ve been getting more and more calls for shows. We’re finishing out the year with a bang with 6 shows, then we’re going into the studio again. We’ll try to release a new EP by February or March.” Contortion in its previous existence was nominated in the Coachella Valley Music Awards for “Best out of Town Band” and “Best Heavy Metal Band”. They also placed 9th of 700 bands trying out for the popular MTV show, “Battle for Ozzfest”. The band has received regular air play on KCAL 96.7FM and continues to have air play on KCXX 103.9FM. “We work our asses off,” shared Brian. With their skill level and work ethic, there’s no telling what this band will accomplish in the months to come. Their message: “We are insurrectionists,” states Brian. “The system needs to be torn down and rebuilt and we’re letting everyone know that. We are all being turned into slaves to a machine that is broken. Our system is failing us. Catch 23 is reflective of this ideology. It’s about media

manipulation... media being entertainment not the truth. It’s a mind control substance. Dreaming Alone is our number one song encompassing the message in its entirety. ‘Sink in your teeth into a live grenade, you’re all enslaved.’ We tell everyone they need to live autonomously. Think for yourself.” The band has also been reviewed in the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, as well as in Skinnie Magazine and Fast Times Magazine, and Zero Tolerance (UK). Contortion has played sold out shows at the Whiskey A-GoGo, The Roxy, House of Blues, Key Club, The Viper Room and The Knitting Factory. The band has opened for Testament, Ankla, F-5 ( with Dave Ellefson of Megadeth), Dry Kill Logic, Overkill, Bleed The Sky, Satyricon, Six Feet Under, Hemlock, Prong and Dragonlord, to name a few. This is a show no local metal fan will want to miss. Leave the whiners at home. This is intelligent, musical thunder and the storm will shatter all your illusions. Beware of the Tahquitz Witch

ith Halloween just around the corner, there’s nothing better than a creepy local tale of a legendary witch. This is not your typical broom touting, green skinned, pointed hatted witch…or is it? If you look at the famous Tahquitz Canyon at certain times of the day, the shadow cast upon the mountain will beg to differ. The story about the famous Tahquitz Canyon is over 2,000 years old and has produced much speculation, curiosity and fear over time. It all started with the Agua Caliente Cahuilla Indians who have been in what is now the Palm Springs area for over 3,000 years. They were a peaceful tribe living off the desert land, protecting, respecting and nurturing it. The tribe was led by a brave chief, who was a trusted and well regarded leader of his people. The chief, like many in positions of leadership, had a counsel of sorts, who he would turn to for advice. One of these wise men was the great shaman Tahquitz. Tahquitz, had knowledge of plants that would help the ill, as well as magical powers. Over time the shaman took his powers too far, and the magic that he possessed once used for good, he was now using for his own evil purposes. Tahquitz would enjoy scaring little children, taking on different disguises before revealing his true identity. Trickery was his focus, deception his game. He then took his pranks to new levels, and was accused of murdering fellow tribal members while on an

excursion to hunt for food. The shaman was transforming into a monster, the chief knew that he had to take action, and banished the once valued shaman to the canyon that now bears his name. It’s clear that the chief must have thought that this exile would shorten the shamans reach from the tribe, but to his horror it did not. The action only enraged Tahquitz and made the demons within him healthy with hate and darkness. The shaman cursed the tribe, and promised to destroy them. The tribe encountered a period of peace after the shaman’s absence but the serenity would not last. The chief in his charitable manner would still have food brought to Tahquitz, not wishing for his once close friend to starve. It was on one of the delivery missions that Tahquitz flexed his evil muscle, killing the innocent who had been sent there to nourish him. When his tribe members did not return, the chief sent his son to investigate. Time passed, and when his son did not return, the chief went himself to face Tahquitz. What he found was a gruesome sight. Dismembered bodies were strewn over the canyons floor, confirming the human meltdown that the shaman had succumbed to. The chiefs’ son was dead, devoured by the demon. He left the canyon vowing to kill Tahquitz, and started preparing for the battle. He thrust himself into a mode to strengthen his mind, soul and spirit, knowing full well that is what would be needed. He returned to the canyon, and with the strength of his ancestors behind him triumphed over Tahquitz. As the tribe burned the shaman’s body, his evil spirit bellowed up for the ashes and into the rocks of the canyon, where his spirit no doubt lives on today. The chief warned his tribe never to enter the canyon, for it would be certain that the shaman would continue his evil ways from beyond. The story is one of the great legends of Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley, and has inspired many bedtime and campfire tales, some true and some exaggerated. The

canyon itself had a time of closure for about 30 years. It had a reputation as a place for people to party, and the homeless to live. The chain linked fence that barred the public from the canyon was a weak deterrent at best. If you wanted to get in bad enough, you could. But the danger that lurks in the canyon has always been real. With very steep terrain and limited daylight it is easy to lose your step in the canyon. I recall a time while hiking with a friend of mine when we got lost in the canyon. Dusk had snuck up on us and before we knew it, it was black… our only guide was the stream

which I knew would eventually lead us back to the highway. As we walked through the stream, we could hear calls from high upon the canyon, calling out to us “Hey little girls, are you lost?” It was frightening and made our escape out of the canyon more urgent. It felt like we were in a Lifetime survivor movie. We finally made it out, cold and slightly worn, but intact. Today Tahquitz Canyon is opened to the public every day during the season and offers ranger or self-guided tours. Gone are the homeless and party animals of the past. It is relatively safe nature destination to visit and a proud part of the Agua Caliente Cahuilla Indians legends. I still don’t know who called down to us from the canyons that day when I got lost at Tahquitz, maybe it was just some homeless guy messing around with a couple of misguided girls. Or maybe it was something else; perhaps it was the shaman himself giving us a warning… to beware of the Tahquitz Witch! For more information on Tahquitz Canyon visit www.tahquitzcanyon.com

Sleeping In for the CUre

reast Cancer has touched most of us in one way or another. Whether it has been our own personal battle or the battle of a family member, friend or just being socially aware, it is a disease that has unfortunately penetrated our daily lives. Through its nefarious existence many groups to fight breast cancer have arisen, but none as well known as the Susan G. Komen organization. This weekend the local chapter of Komen will be putting on one of their most successful and favorite events inviting supporters to Sleep in for The Cure. The event is in its third year and the brain child of local Komen chairperson Aimee Salzmann. It will take place at the Renaissance Esmeralda Resort & Spa in Indian Wells October 4 and 5th. Sleep in for the Cure is a unique event incorporating a playful slumber party, followed by a fashion show and silent auction the following day. The fashion show is produced by fashion forward local business woman Caroldean Ross, owner of the wildly successful Resale Therapy Store, which specializes in previously owned men’s and women’s apparel offering brands such as Gucci and Prada and is located in Cathedral City. Ross is strongly involved with the Komen organization as she has been personally affected by breast cancer, losing her sister to the disease and having her mother in remission, “Everyone is affected by this

disease,” Ross exclaims. This year’s theme for the event is1950’s Grease Pink Party. It will be a Frenchy’s Slumber Party (beauty school drop-out) on Friday night from 7-9:30pm and will offer special party rooms including a Spa Room and Make-up Room, PJ attire is required. Saturday ushers in a fashion show, silent auction and refreshments at the Stir venue inside the resort. The doors to the show open at 11:00am with the fashion show starting promptly at 12:30pm. The silent auction promises to have high end products up for bidding including fabulous trips! The fashion show will highlight fashions from Resale Therapy and from Déjà vu Vintage Clothing in Palm Springs, which features clothing from the 50’s, 60’s,70’s and the good old 80’s. Models will include local celebrities including Manny the Movie guy, and if you attended last year’s fashion show, you know how entertaining he can be. The most important models will be those who survived and who are currently battling breast cancer, which will be shuffled throughout the fashion show. These ladies are the true stars of the event. As an added treat, Suzy Cadam from Dean Martins Gold-Diggers will perform, bringing her own touch of mid-century glamour as she will shimmer in her original gold sequined dress that she used to perform in.

Sleep In for the Cure is an excellent event for supporters and survivors to bond in a lively atmosphere while raising money for breast cancer. The fundraiser will benefit the local Coachella Valley community directly, providing breast cancer screening and other services for those who need help. CBS Local 2 Anchor is Long on news experience “The House Whores Crew” Put a New Spin on House Music

here aren’t a lot of news anchors working today who were around for the events of Nov. 22, 1963 to the recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings on same-sex marriage. At 64, CBS Local 2 evening anchor Kris Long’s memory stretches back to watching the men like Walter Cronkite, Chet Huntley and David Brinkley who shaped early news reporting, to the latest crops of grads who will someday take over the rapidly changing face of broadcast journalism. “Obviously there are some young people who won’t make it,” Long said earlier this week. “But there are also some, who with a little mentoring, certainly have the ability in 10 or 15 years to take news to the future.” Considering the turn toward younger reporters and anchors, Long could be considered one of the deans of broadcasting after more 40 years in the business. His career “magical mystery tour” has taken him from small stations in Iowa to major markets such as Chicago, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and Phoenix before landing him in the Coachella Valley in 2005. Long before that, Long was born in Michigan while his parents were in college. He lived near Detroit and Memphis, Tenn., as a kid and started his college career at the University of Oklahoma before earning a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the University of North Texas. “In those days we didn’t get degrees in broadcast journalism,” he said. In fact, Long wasn’t looking at a career in news. “I wanted to be a sports guy,” he said. But in 1975 when WHO in Des Moines, Iowa, offered him his first broadcast job doing news, “I took it,” he recalled. “And I don’t regret it.” By 1987, Long was working in Chicago. “That was a nice opportunity,” he said of his six year stint in the Windy City. Unfortunately, when another long-time Chicago anchor became available, Long got bumped out of his spot and ended up in Phoenix working with an old news director. Out of work again in the early 2000s when the station went through a major

shake-up, Long was once again looking for work. At the time, his daughter Hillary was in high school. “We decided that I’d look for something within driving distance,” he said. What he found was an anchor position at KPSP CBS 2. “It was a market drop for me, but it was drivable. It’ll be nine years next April and I have no plans to retire anytime soon.” For the first 18 months, Long made the long weekend drives to his home in Scottsdale while living in an apartment here in the valley. Once Hillary was in college, his wife made the move. Outside of work, Long and his wife like to spend time exploring California, at places like Idyllwild, Lake Arrowhead, Santa Barbara and recently, Ojai, on the list. “We haven’t been to the Sierras yet, but there’s time,” he said. Without the rivalry of big city stations, Long likes getting together with other anchors for a weekly game of golf. “John (White) has been a golfing buddy since before out stations merged,” he noted. “We used to get together with Gino (LaMont) more often but he had to go and have a baby at 50!” For all his own good fortune, Long likes having the ability to donate his time to causes that are meaningful to him, like United Cerebral Palsy, an association that started more than 35 years ago. He’s on the board, but rarely makes the board meetings, he said. “They’re once a month on Monday at 6 p.m.,” he added. “But I emcee a couple of events and play in the golf tournament.” He’s also associated with ChildHelp USA, an organization that helps teens and attends or emcees events for other local charities and organizations. “If I can help by playing golf or telling a couple of jokes, I’ll do it if I can,” he said. “And I do as many as I can.” For Long, the move to the Coachella Valley has been a good one. “There are a lot of guys my age that have been out of the business and know that they won’t get another job,” he said. “I know I’m lucky and I have no intention of leaving.”

here has been a surge in House music over the past decade with DJ producers like Calvin Harris and Afrojack crossing over into the mainstream top 40 music charts. With the birth of Electronic Dance Music (EDM,) there has also been an explosion of DJs who now specialize in that genre of music. At many clubs and shows, it’s common to see a long list of DJs playing together who do not even know each other. The House Whores Crew stands out from this norm because this trio of DJs plays together every show. DJ Devin, Lino Da Sound Guy and Willie Funk founded the crew. While the threesome occasionally do solo shows, they have spent the last six years working together as The House Whores Crew. It’s the chemistry between the three friends and the ability to play off each other that set these DJs apart from others in their profession.

DJ Devin is the brainchild behind The House Whores Crew and recalls being inspired in high school by an uncle who was a DJ: “It gave me a push and I started DJing in the late 90’s when the scene was at its peak in the underground.” Playing at clubs and parties for the last ten years, Devin has also performed on some live radio shows. Although he was born in Hawaii, Devin has spent most of his life in the Coachella Valley and loves to scratch and mix Hip Hop with House. Finding tracks that no one is playing yet or finding that one track that no one knows about is Devin’s trademark. “Lino Da Sound Guy,” is the second player of this three-person act. Originally from Orange County, he has been living in the desert for twelve years now. Lino started out as the sound person for the group, setting up the gigs and doing the sound checks. Eventually Lino went from setting up the sound to making his own when he began weaving his DJ sets into the mix. Like Devin, he describes how his relatives

encouraged him: “My cousins were DJs for as long as I can remember. I used to get in trouble for playing with their equipment at family party’s when they were gone.” His sets include Deep House, Soul, Jazz, Classic, and Funky House. Willie Funk (Nicholas Sprebe) began DJing at age sixteen and is the third member of The House Whores. Willie remembers how he spontaneously got started as a DJ: “I went to a club with a friend and heard House Music and I liked it because it was different. I bought turntables and records the next day and started learning.” Willie is actually his middle name, combined with the fact that he likes Funky beats, the name Willie Funk was born. He grew up listening to Old School Funk, Classic Rock and Roll, Oldies, some Disco influence and then House music. Willie prides himself on his high level of energy. His goal would be to DJ full-time all over the world.

The group is currently being managed by Devin’s sister Annette Guzman and her friend Jason Watson. Fire Lanes Now Aptly Named

ver had a really bad travel experience? The kind that makes your brain bleed and your eyes sting? When the best part is landing in your hometown and feeling the sweeping relief of familiarity? Now imagine a wrecking ball through your face as soon as your feet hit that familiar concrete… THAT was late Saturday night for former USC head coach Lane Kiffin. And for what it’s worth: couldn’t have happened to a better guy. I’ve been calling for the replacement of Lane Kiffin since he was hired by Mike Garrett in the wake of Pete Carroll jetting (read: escaping) for the Seattle Seahawks. See, Garrett knew few quality head coaches would be willing to wade through the NCAA sanctions the Carroll/Garrett era dumped the proud university into. So he hired a man who wouldn’t question his authority or that of the departed Carroll, and simply accept the hand he was dealt. He hired a man who couldn’t question the previous regime’s transgressions because he was part-andparcel of the coaching staff and therefore as culpable in the “lack of institutional control.” So, sure, Lane Kiffin had a tough road in front of him, but he had plenty of elite talent to help him pave that road. Problem is: he’s a lousy head coach. Lousy. I don’t dislike Kiffin. I’ve interviewed him many times and found him to be a genuinely likeable guy. But he’s just not good at being a head coach. He was terrible as the Raiders’ head coach. Awful at Tennessee. And face planted at USC. It’s like the hamburgers at AM/PM… If

painfully desperate, they could be considered a serviceable solution to hunger, but you should NEVER get that desperate. Problem was, USC did and the nation had to stomach a bad decision at a top institution. And while Kiffin toiled with some of the nation’s top talent last year and the losses piled up and the recruits dumped USC like an overweight model, the biggest shock came this summer when USC athletic director, Pat Haden, gave a “State of Troy” address and publicly endorsed Kiffin. Up to that point, I respected Pat Haden. But when he voluntarily approved of Kiffin and even said Kiffin’s job was NOT in jeopardy, I concluded Haden was either lying or sticking his head in the sand. Either way, not good leadership. After a 62-41 loss to ASU in Tempe, the Kiffin got off the team bus, summoned to a small side room at LAX and Haden launched the haymaker, firing Kiffin at the airport. Troy rejoiced and those who have been calling for Lane’s firing are now wondering who the replacement will be. Former Ole’ Miss head coach, SC defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron will serve as interim. Rumors abound about who’s next in line and names like Jack Del Rio, Jeff Fisher, Chris Pederson and others are the ones at the top of the list. I hope Haden has learned from this experience as well, how to communicate appropriate expectations and choose a new head coach that can be held accountable and help rebuild the program. The good news is, after a bad taste in the mouths of Trojan fans, almost any one will be a better option than Kiffin. an we all take a step back for a second and thank the world of sports. Under the heading of, ‘Something I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy’ I spent the better part of the morning at the Department of Motor Vehicles. Taking in the sights, I realized that there really aren’t any attractive people at the DMV. No one gets ready to go there, it’s never happening, and I’m safe in guessing everyone would rather be somewhere else. I noticed eyes down, body language slumping, lots of shuffling and mumbling. Reading people’s body language suggested they had just seen a box of kittens explode in the parking lot and were in their own way trying to make sense of it all. Then I realized, “Hey, I’m at the DMV. I can’t look like these people, I’m not miserable or unattractive and besides, I don’t really particularly care for cats.” Searching for why I hopefully cannot be lumped in with what looks like the extra cast from “Beyond the Dead”. It was then it dawned on me, I had spent almost an hour on my phone going over strategies for my fantasy team, looking up odds on this week’s college and NFL games, reading about Lane Kiffin’s unceremonious firing from USC (what were they thinking in the first place). I was busy, engaged, in my own little world and in fact happy with the “down time” my trip to the DMV had given. Things were great. I realized I had the world of athletics to save me. I have the trials and tribulations of athletes and teams to break me away from the monotony that is the daily routine. A quick look back gives pause for appreciation and re-enforces why we love the world of athletics. -Mariano Rivera; in an era of the ME athlete, Mariano for 19 years has been nothing but a class act. It’s hard enough to do anything for 2 decades. Now be great at it and NOT give into the glamour and access to excess that is New York City. No off the field drama no cut throat contract negotiations. Rivera’s postseason records include most games pitched (96, Jeff Nelson is second with 55), most saves (42, Brad Lidge is second with 18) and lowest ERA (0.70, minimum 30 innings pitched). Rivera has appeared in 16 postseasons and has only been charged with multiple runs in two of them: 2000 and 2001. More people have walked on the moon then have hit home runs in the postseason off Rivera, in 19 years! Case closed. Mariano’s career very much exemplifies greatness. It’s gone now. Hope you paid attention. -Tiger Woods; Okay, I hear you. He’s no Mariano Rivera off the field. And some would say his antics on the course have lots

of room for improvement (see Tom Watson) but you can’t deny the fact that with Tiger winning this year’s player of the year award is like a warm blanket for golf. Golf isn’t the same in many respects with Woods not being one of the greats out there on tour every week. Woods captured five tour titles, and despite another season without a major, he managed to finish first in the all-around ranking and second in scoring average, and also stays ranked #1 in the world. He is the lightning rod for golf and crosses over as being an incredible athlete in the air of LeBron, Jeter, Manning and Kobe, what other golfer can do that? -MLB regular season finally being over! The Major League Baseball season consists of 2430 games played for each of the two leagues, over approximately 180 days, with 162 games played per team. I’m tired of baseball from just typing that. Baseball to me makes NASCAR look interesting. If games were perhaps 2 hours it wouldn’t be so bad. Suggestions to make games go faster; Create a rule where every pitcher has to face at least 3 batters or even 2. Wait how about a minimum of 15 pitches, come on give me something! These specialty pitchers coming in to throw sometimes 2 or 3 pitches then being yanked for the next middle reliever, set up guy, closer, whatever. What happened to the days when pitchers were just pitchers? Oh and my favorite, Stop singing in the middle of the game! Really Major League Baseball, we’re to take you serious when at the start of every 7th inning you feel the need to break out into song like Gene Kelly from ‘52 classic “Singin in the Rain”? P.S. that was 1952, get with the times MLB. There are so many other reasons to celebrate the sporting world, NFL is back in full swing, and Alabama is atop the NCAA Mountain as usual. We haven’t heard about Tim Tebow in at least (checking my watch) 72 hours. These are all fabulous reasons why life is good. So when you’re at the grocery store, in traffic, at the DMV, or doing anything that has to deal with inlaws, relax, exhale and thank the sporting world for creating balance and giving us all a reason to smile and enjoy life.

“Twenty Years Underground” (Dali’s Llama Records)

f someone were to erect a shrine to the founders of the Desert Rock scene, an imposing Mount Rushmore-style monument, the four faces would have to be Mario Lalli, Herb Lineau, Sean Wheeler and Zach Huskey. Other Desert musicians have received more recognition and achieved more notoriety, but these guys were the originators, the pioneers. A lot of people claim to have attended generator parties. These guys invented them. Zach Huskey began playing music more than 30 years ago. He cycled through a plethora of bands until his wife Erica learned the bass and they formed Dali’s Llama. They released their debut, Pre-Post Now in 1993. The band has been going strong for 20 years, releasing 10 albums: Pre-Post Now, Creative Space, Being, The Color Of Apples, Chordata, Sweet Sludge, Raw Is Real, Full On Dunes, Howl Do You Do and Autumn Woods. To celebrate this milestone, the band is headlining a day-long music festival, “Dali’s Llama’s Wild Rumpus,” featuring more than 10 bands. Also, there will be an informal screening of the rough cut of “Lo-Desert Sound.” (The documentary, from German filmmaker Joerg Steineck is a comprehensive overview of the Desert Rock scene.) To further commemorate their two decades as a band, Dali’s Llama has released their first vinyl long player, Twenty Years Underground. The album isn’t a broad

examination of the Dali’s Llama oeuvre. But it is a lovingly curated eight song LP that represents the last five years of the band. Twenty Years Underground opens with “Creosote” and “Micro Giant” from the Sweet Sludge album. Thudding percussion and rubbery bass lines connect with thick, tilta-whirl guitar riffs on “Creosote.” The song is grind-y Sabbath-esque meditation on the

crucial minutiae of plant life. “Micro-Giant” weds a chunky, ‘70s style backbeat to plucked guitar notes. Zach’s snarling vocals highlight lyrics that decry rampant abuse of power. His indignation is matched by his brittle guitar solo. The Full On Dunes album is represented with two songs, “Desert Dogs” and “King Platypus.” The former feels appropriately feral.

Pliant bass lines collide with a bludgeoning beat. Zach unfurls a series of riffs fat with sustain. Joe Dillon chimes in on guitar and Mario Lalli provides a gritty soliloquy that crests over the maelstrom. The latter moves at warp speed. A shambolic and playful homage to the duckbilled mammal. The track features Sean Wheeler on backing vocals. Midway through, the rhythm downshifts and Zach delivers an aching, bluesy solo. Joe Dillon joined the band for the Raw Is Real and Howl Do You Do albums. Raw.. is represented by the title track. Pummeling drums and Zach’s guttural, Cro-Magnon vocals accent the lyrics’ primitive mien. The spiky solo feels suitably savage. The Howl album was a satisfying detour that paid homage to ‘60s Garage Rock and ‘70s Psychobilly. Co-producer Mikael Jacobson joined the band on keyboards, providing the swirly organ fills on “She’s My Halloween.” The track is a spooky delight, blending Zach’s kaleidoscopic chords with Erica’s bee-stung backing vocals. The final songs on the album are fresh from Dali’s Llama’s latest release, Autumn Woods. “Bad Dreams” is as foreboding as the title implies. Guitarist Joe Wangler adds a dusty patina to Zach’s sandpaper-y chords. The track is awash with blistering riffs until it suddenly downshifts, the bonecrusher groove supplanted with a roiling rhythm. The title track from Autumn Woods closes out Twenty Years Underground. Grim guitar chords offer an opening salvo to a song that clocks in at nearly 10 minutes. An earthy paean to the power of nature, Zach and Joe’s riff-age pinballs between mesmerizing repetition and helical, honeyed fills. Although Dali’s Llama is a desert institution, somehow the band cycles through drummers like Spinal Tap (with less dire results)! Let this paragraph be a tribute to all drummers past and present, who have provided the backbone to their sound, Johnnie Moreno, Ian Dye, George Rubalcava, Robin Clewell, Jeff Howe and currently Craig Brown. The best thing about Twenty Years Underground, is that you get to listen to this amazing band on vinyl. If your ears are constantly tuned to the tinny convenience of MP3 music, prepare for the mind-blowing experience of really hearing the full, rich sound as the needle hits the groove. Although this isn’t the lavish, careerspanning box set the band deserves, Twenty Years Underground gives you a tantalizing taste of power and majesty that is Dali’s Llama. It will leave you wanting more.

are happier if they have the “freedom” to live outside. Here are some of the reasons to keep your cat inside, as much as you might think he would enjoy a romp out in the sunshine. 1. Outdoor cats are subject to predators Coyotes are the primary threat to felines in the Coachella Valley. They are frequently spotted inside our gated country clubs and other residential communities. Stray dogs can also kill a cat, particularly if they are running in packs. 2. Risk of Injury or Disease Thousands of cats are killed every year from cars. Other hazards on our landscape such as barb wire fencing, rodent traps, and poisons can cause grave injury or death. Cats like the sweet taste of anti-freeze, but it is extremely toxic and will result in death within hours. Some feline diseases are transmitted from other stray cats. Fleas, ticks and ringworm can be picked up while Felix is strolling through the neighborhood. 3. Fights with other Cats

Cats are territorial animals, and injuries from cat fights can run up some major veterinary bills. Their territorial battles can result in abscessed wounds which can be deadly if not treated. 4. Malicious Individuals Sad to say, there are people in our community who are cruel and sadistic. There was a report just last week that someone in the city of Palm Desert shot and killed several cats near Hovley and Cook streets. With Halloween approaching, cat owners need to be even more vigilant. 5. Theft Even if they don’t intend to harm your pet, thieves may decide to “adopt” your cat. Tracking them down and proving ownership may be difficult. If your cat is a sought after breeds such as Siamese or Persians, thieves

Songbird Conservation Cats are predators, and it is an instinctual behavior for them to kill and eat birds and other small wildlife. Your well-fed pet may deposit a dead bird as a present on your doorstep. 9. Neighbor Relations Some of your neighbors might not appreciate a cat defecating and roaming on their property. Gardeners in particular are wary of animals who tromp through their greenery. Ways to keep Kitty Happy Indoors - Cats are perfectly content to sit in the sunshine on a safe window ledge INSIDE your home. The average life span of indoor cats is between twelve and seventeen years, while that of outdoor cats is about five years. The “Chillable” Cabernet Franc

he beautiful autumn days & nights are back! And this means there’ll be a lot of switching around between our favorite reds and whites. Of course, both wines will still be in vogue as the seasonal ritual of moving into heavierbodied wine for the holidays and winter begins its passage. We’ve been covering some cold and refreshing white wines of late, and since it’s still warm out, it would be a nice change to enjoy a tasty red wine that you can chill up as well. I’ve got a great recommendation to enlighten our hearts and minds…and I guess stomachs—since we’re going there. Let’s start with a quick quiz: Genetically speaking, what are Cabernet Sauvignon’s two “parents”? Well—its name actually gives it away. DNA analysis tells us it’s Sauvignon Blanc (yes!—a white wine grape) and the red Cabernet Franc. For all you Bordeaux fans, it may be known that the Cabernet Franc is one of the five “blending” grapes of this famous area. This grape is generally added to give the classic Bordeaux blend beautiful aromatics, violets, fresh herbs and a fine tannin structure. But on its own and in an era of better and better wine making, Cabernet Franc, an otherwise finicky grape to manage on vine, is becoming an exciting wine as modern vintners maintain the delicate floral notes as they produce a light and lively red to take on the vegetable rich foods of autumn. Cabernet Franc is a medium-bodied dry red with good acidity and medium to high tannin level. Its flavors are aromatic and fruity with notes of black and red currants, blackberries, black pepper, blueberries, cedar, coffee, earth, green bell peppers, green olives, herbs, leather, mint, minerals, plums, raspberries, red cherries, spices, stones, strawberries, tobacco, and violets. Its texture is fine, rich, soft, and velvety. So here’s the deal—and why all Cabernet Sauvignon lovers should be aware of the Cab Franc. The flavor profile above should seal the deal in itself. What distinguishes

this wine from a Cabernet Sauvignon, and why we are suggesting the Cab Franc at this time, is the fact that we get to enjoy all of those classic Cab flavors without all the heft and heaviness in those full-bodied wines. This wine is a wonderful combination of fruitiness and floral notes, with great acidity and structure. It has both complexity and restraint. And you can chill it up; it’s the perfect red any time of the day. Costa Nichols over at his Desert Wine and Spirits in Palm Springs, 760.327.7701, carries the Alexander Valley Vineyards Sonoma County Cabernet Franc with aromas and flavors of fresh berries and spice along with mild oak for around $19. He also carries a Chinon, Mark Brédif 2010, which is France’s sexy version of a pure Cab Franc that is produced in the lovely Loire Valley. This is a wine that any wine enthusiast must have had at least once in their life My friend Chris at ForgottenGrapes. com says: “a blend of vines, vegetables, and strawberries on the nose, a stiff, rigid backbone of acid but still a soft round mouth feel to the wine, flavors of bright cranberries that give way to hints of olive and green pepper; and a long bright finish that stays with you. Chinon Cab Franc can be a fascinating, complex, completely unexpected treat, and the Marc Brédif Chinon is one of the purest expressions tasted.” It sells for around $17 at Desert Wine & Spirits. The real treat of Autumn, when it come to a California Cab Franc, is the magnificent 2010 Gulleyan Cabernet Franc Reserve from the vineyards around Paso Robles. This is a world class wine. Almost every aroma and flavor that I described earlier above was displayed in this wine. And was I ever seduced by the whiffs of herbs, spices, violets, and sweet tobacco blended with great depth of fruit. A little pricey, at around $35, but you and your wine friends are worth it. It’s a great way to usher in the fall season You’ll remember a couple of columns back, I wrote on the results of the San Francisco International Wine Competition. No surprise here: this Gulleyan Cabernet

Franc was awarded Gold (and as I found out—it just missed Double Gold by one hesitant vote!—you hate when that happens!) The artist winemaker responsible for this wine and others is Jacob Gularian. He was introduced to winemaking by his grandfather as a young boy in the fertile vineyards of the world famous Bekaa Valley in Lebanon. (By the way—back in the day, French wine producers were notorious in sourcing rich red wine from the Bekaa Valley and passing it off as a French world class wine.) All Gulleyan Wines are made from handpicked grapes from small family owned vineyards in famous Paso Robles. As so many of your wine enthusiasts know, this area is known for its micro-climate and optimum growing conditions. Jacob uses only new French Oak barrels for aging, it’s never filtered, and it never passes through high-pressure pumps.

ne of the great things about our valley is that we have a plethora of dining venues to choose from. I always get excited when I stumble upon a well-kept secret or restaurant that is not at all what I would expect. That would be the case with Richie’s Diner in the Westfield Shopping Mall in Palm Desert. We’ve all heard the old adage that “you get what you pay for” however, at Richie’s you get a little more. I totally expected it to be “just a burger joint and malt shop” and was I surprised to find out what all they have to offer. YES!! They have amazing burgers, fries, malts and shakes but they also have a full dinner menu of an upscale restaurant. After dining there on several occasions I felt I needed to let our readers know what they are missing if they haven’t tried Richie’s yet. They have a fantastic fish menu which includes options like Atlantic wild salmon, tilapia filet scampi style, Macademia nut Alaskan filets, fried shrimp, fish and chips and my favorite the boneless rainbow trout. All are served with different accompaniments like vegetables, garden rice, French fries, salad or coleslaw and all for 10.95 or less (salmon dinner is 12.95).Not only is it a great value but the fish is fresh and delicious. Richie’s also boasts quite a steak menu with Premium Sirloin (14.95), Premium Rib Eye (18.95), Premium Porterhouse (21.95)

and one of the best filet mignon in town for only (15.95). The filet was hand-cut fresh on the premises and cooked to perfection. These dinners also included potato and vegetables. Perhaps you’re in the mood for a rack of ribs or tri-tip which is slow roasted daily in their outdoor cooker making the meat fall off the bone and taste tender and juicy. If you’re looking to eat on the lighter side they have an amazing salad selection with my favorites being the Apple Walnut Chicken Salad and the Tri-tip Salad for 9.95. They also have every type of sandwich your heart desires (too many to list), same goes for the burgers, soups and starters. I have to say it’s the most extensive menu I have seen, sure to satisfy anyone’s taste buds. I have not been disappointed by any of the meals I’ve had there and I’ve tried many items on the menu. Their desserts include cheesecakes, sundaes and several pies with my favorite being a tie between the Creamy banana and the Peanut butter. They are all made fresh daily. At the end of the day any pies that are left over do not get served the next day. Richie’s takes pride in all of their meats and ingredients being made fresh on a daily basis and you can tell with every bite. That probably has to do with Richie’s being a family business from the start. While 2013 has Richie’s celebrating their 22nd Anniversary, their tradition of pleasin’ people with good country cookin’ goes way back. It was over a half century ago when founders Jack and Linda Williams got hitched and began their lifetime dedication to the food industry. Along the way, they helped develop the concept for a well-known steakhouse chain and built 38 restaurants in two decades, becoming their largest and most successful franchisee. Growing up among local ranches and farms of West Texas and New Mexico, Jack’s standards were set high with the freshest, highest quality meats and produce. And the

The dream became reality in 1991 with the first Richie’s Diner established in Temecula, California. CUT TO THE CHASE RUSH

Whether in front of or behind the camera, Ron Howard has been making movies almost all his life. His first time as a feature director was 1977’s low budget car chase GRAND THEFT AUTO. Howard has come full circle with RUSH, a sleek, slick and satisfying race movie about the intense true life rivalry on the mid 1970’s Formula One circuit between handsome British playboy James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and the more serious minded, plain-looking (“rat-faced”) Austrian Niki Lauda (Daniel Brühl). Hemsworth and Brühl are uncanny physical matches to their real life counterparts (both of whom are briefly seen in the closing credits). With RUSH, two-time Academy Award© winner Howard has made perhaps his best movie. There’s a foreign film vibe to this tightly edited, lean, artistic production that is loaded with up close racing sequences that focus on the personalities of the two competitors in a blazing season that many Brits and Europeans well remember (the film is already a big hit in the UK).

Hemsworth captures the arrogance, swagger and playboy charm of Hunt. But none-the-less, he is clearly the villain of the piece. While perfectionist Brühl may not be a full-fledged hero, it is he for whom we root. The mix of what must be CGI and stock footage with recreations of the exciting races is unusually adept and creates an impressionistic canvas of what it’s like to present in the driver’s seat and in the stands. It deserves to be seen on the biggest screen possible. The period feel of the era is meticulously realized. The supporting cast, especially the women in the lives of the two leads, are subtly nuanced. Olivia Wilde is model Suzy Miller who becomes Hunt’s wife (and Richard Burton’s mistress). Alexandra Maria Lara, in several nearly wordless scenes, is extremely effective as an understanding Marlene Lauda who clearly loves her complicated husband. I wish the film had been even louder during the racing sequences and even though Hans Zimmer’s bold score is pumped, I wanted the seats to vibrate. This is an adult, R-rated film. It is not a deep story and the surprises and reveals are in the truth of what actually happened during that unforgettably competitive racing year. I was emotionally involved, especially during the second half. Recommended. Now playing at Cinemas Palme d’Or. WE ARE WHAT WE ARE

Not yet showing locally, this loose reboot of SOMOS LO QUE HAY may be about something more than superficial genre horror it is disguised as. At least I think it is. In some ways, it might be about what happens when a seemingly wholesome -- perhaps deeply religious -- family, the Parkers in this instance, are isolated and cut off from the wired world the rest of us glibly share. secret, father Frank maintains his ancestral customs, no matter what. When a big storm unloads its rain and wrath, daughters Iris, Rose and brother Rory are forced into a new position of family responsibility for which they are ill prepared. As the rain comes down and the waters rise, secrets the family has kept hidden for generations are slowly revealed. Locals, including a Doc Barrows (Michael Parks), build a case against the Parkers and an inevitable showdown looms. And when it arrives, it is indeed a whopper. Ambyr Childers, a part time resident of the CV, is riveting as the blank-faced, wide-eyed teen Iris. Director Jim Miklis has a sure hand and a great eye for visual metaphors that imply a hell of a lot more than what’s overtly on the screen.

But is Heidi going bonkers or are the “Lords of Salem” returning for bloody revenge on modern day Salem? Dracula

is the season to celebrate what scares us. Literature has provided readers with indelible characters that still haunt us. Dracula by Bram Stoker has remained a popular horror classic since its publication in 1897. For those unfamiliar with the epic 400 plus pages in 27 chapters, the novel is epistolary -- told through letters, journals, diary entries, telegrams and news clippings. It begins with Jonathan Harker’s journal entry regarding his responsibility to his firm as a new lawyer to get legal papers signed for the purchase of property in England by a Count Dracula who lives in Transylvania. Harker makes the arduous journey and quickly comes to realize his shapeshifting, bloodthirsty host is evil. Harker is psychologically tortured, nearly raped by the Count’s three hungry vixen vampires and held prisoner while the Count makes his way to England in a coffin on a death ship. When the Count arrives in London, he soon discovers Mina, Harker’s fiancé, and Lucy, Mina’s best friend. The coquettish Lucy is courting three men at the same time. But she is soon seduced, bitten and controlled by the vampire Count. Under his spell, she is unable to resist and craves his physical attention.

Martin Ritt’s 1965 movie based on the 1963 novel by John le Carré gave Richard Burton one of his best roles as British secret agent at the end of his rope. Reassigned from fieldwork, Burton’s character, Alex Leamas, is sent on a mission to “defect” behind the Iron Curtain. To make it seem more real, once in East Berlin, Leamas goes on an alcoholic binge. The beautiful black and white cinematography by Oswald Morris is as gritty as the complex plot of crosses and double-crosses. As with most Criterion titles, there’s a rich trove of bonus material including two terrific featurettes on le Carré as well as a conversation on “Acting in the 60’s” with Burton and critic Kenneth Tynan. Mina and Lucy’s boyfriends realize Lucy is not herself and bring in the expert Van Helsing, a philosopher who recognizes Lucy’s problem is supernatural. The Count must be stopped. But first, in order to save her soul, they must kill the beautiful and sensual Lucy who has become a full-blown vampire. After she is stabbed through the heart, beheaded and buried, her “Christian immortality” is once again secured. The Count is then tracked and hunted across Eastern Europe by Mina and Harker, the boyfriends and Van Helsing. After a bloody confrontation the Count, is finally destroyed in the nick of time just as the sun sets. Even today, Stoker’s Dracula is a compelling and provocative read. The narrative, formed through mostly first person correspondence and personal journals, provides intimate insight into the characters. The reader gets to know the characters’ personal fears and anxieties as they discover and understand the profound threat that is Dracula. The contributors are all credible witnesses and reliable sources, which give the story gravity and make it engaging. Mina, Harker and the Van Helsing crew are serious about stopping Dracula. He is an ancient relative of the infamous Vlad the Impalor and his blood lust could potentially create “a new and ever widening circle of semi-demons to batten on the helpless.” The Count is a formidable foe and a threat to human existence. Set in the Victorian age, the issues of society, science and sex are prevalent to the story and perhaps relevant to our age. Dracula is an outsider. He is “the other”, a gothic pagan spreading a virus that usurps free will and enslaves one to a life of darkness. The Count is a sensual creature seeking to be a part of the modern world. He feeds on men and women with the same lust. He is Satanic-like and a perversion. His needs are insatiable. His immortality is a burden and a curse. But he is alone in the world without true love. Even Mina observes a strange sadness and relief at his demise.

Dracula brazenly and seductively comes into the Victorian age’s repressed and chased lives and is cut down by Christian iconography and religious dogma. Is it frightening that Dracula can be a sensual lover and yet a horrible monster? It is terrifying to think we could surrender our free will for immortality? Is it scary to invite “the other” into our lives? Is it fear that keeps religion alive? Abraham “Bram” Stoker was not the first to write about Vampires. In 1819 Dr. John Polidori wrote Vampyre. The vampire genre is alive and well. It peers at us from billboards, movie theaters, TV screens, T-shirts, graphic novels and books. Even with a stake in his heart, Dracula remains immortal.

emocrats love the Act because it insures more people and makes insurance more affordable to small businesses and individuals. People who could not get insurance previously due to ‘pre-existing’ conditions, now can. By the way, how someone can have a condition before it exists is a riddle to me - shouldn’t these simply be called conditions? While few understand how Obamacare works, we are told to give it a chance and government will make it all work. Trying to understand the Act left my head spinning...I wonder if that is covered...and if so, how much is my out of pocket? Republicans hate the Act because they believe it will bankrupt the United States and is the beginning of the end of Democracy as we know it (which is actually not a Democracy but a Republic that functions more like a Social Corporatocracy) and the beginning of the road to European-styled Socialism or possibly even Totalitarianism. I don’t exactly know what European-styled Socialism is although I do know that many Europeans have style (except for Birkenstocks and lederhosen). As far as Totalitarianism, Obama is not the next Stalin or Hitler.

Many seniors believe Obamacare is bad for the country despite the fact that they are already the beneficiaries of what is essentially Obamacare a/k/a Medicare. I haven’t figured out how someone can be against something that they strongly defend and benefit from. I suppose it is because they want to bogart the benefits. Then again, their concerns could be reasonable in that the government is lowering what it pays to doctors creating a shortage of doctors willing to participate in Medicare and, by extension, Obamacare. We know that 99.98% of all businesses with more than 50 workers already offer employees health insurance. Why the mandated health insurance is such a worry to those businesses is hard to understand. We might find a hint in how Walmart coaches their employees on how to qualify

for government aid such that it costs you and me $1,000 per Walmart employee (per Congressman Alan Grayson) of which they have more than 1 million employees (Social Corporatocracy in action). Additionally, Unions do not like the Act. One of the reasons might be because the Act creates insurance portability. Stated differently, if you can get the same insurance individually as you can get through the union or a corporation, this eliminates a benefit currently negotiated for you. Each controls you a little less. The real question in the debate is whether you feel healthcare is a basic human right or a luxury. People receiving Medicare who are against the Act are either selfish or stupid. Why should you have the right to government assisted healthcare while excluding someone else who needs it? For those who feel that affordable healthcare will bankrupt the country, realize that we currently spend $375 per person per month on our military. The Act at its peak will cost half that. Additionally, this country

currently spends more on healthcare per person than any other country on Earth yet 50 million of our 330 million Americans are uninsured and the quality of care does not rank near the top. By better managing costs, we all can have healthcare without bankrupting the country. In closing, the Obama Administration has done an awful job at explaining the Act. The basic problem with the Act appears to be that they have capped what is paid to doctors without capping what doctors can charge. It doesn’t take a math major to figure out who will make up that shortfall. While the Act has many good and important elements, its basic math doesn’t add up. ittle Maddi Rose hit the stage at the tender age of two in A Christmas Carol. She told her parents she wanted to be a musical artist. “They just patted me on the head and said, ‘There, there, Maddi.’” Now, 15 years later, Maddi Rose is set to share the stage with the fabulous Melissa Etheridge. “It’s just a weird concept for me right now. I really didn’t expect it to happen this soon,” she shared, the awe still showing in her Aussie accented voice. This 17 year old, native Australian, has, I think, the gumption, talent and the personality to recruit people to her team. This is reflected in the fact that she has already won over the heart and collaboration of the very talented, producer and recording engineer, Tom Weir. “He really hooked a sister up with the best of the best in the business,” gushed the up and coming artist. From the names on the songs produced so far, this is a qualified statement. Tom arranged for drummer, Josh Freese of the Vandals and Devo, and previously heard with Paramore and Nine Inch Nails to bring in the rhythm section for her album. Tim Pierce, session guitarist for an endless list of known artists (Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Patty Smith, Joe Cocker, Michael Jackson, Joan Armatrading, Madonna... to name a very few) also made himself

available to the project at Tom’s request. A lot is set to happen for this contemporary artist as she approaches 18. This year she will be graduating from high school, and she is in the sights of some major labels. Depending on label response, she will be releasing her fist record sometime within the next six months if all goes well. Maddi’s songwriting reflects her eclectic musical tastes that encompass a varied list of artists from Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood to U2, Fall Out Boy, Pink and Guns and Roses. While she has a lot of cover tunes out there on YouTube, make no mistake, this artist is all about writing her own songs. “Everything I go through I write a song about it. It’s such an amazing form of expression. It’s like art for the ears.” Her instruments of choice are guitar and piano, but she’s been known to play everything from the recorder and flute, to percussion, bass and the ukelele. Maddi Rose will be debuting her songcrafting skills as she accompanies herself on guitar at the Tilted Kilt After Dark in Palm Desert. Mr. Gribow, I was in an auto accident recently. Why do I need a lawyer? Clearly you can handle the case yourself but you will not get the same results. Most victims do not realize that they are Not in Good Hands and that their Friendly Neighbor Will Not Give them a Piece of the Rock. Insurance companies view their job as giving you the least money possible. Accident victims think it is ok to talk to the adjuster and that it will not hurt their case. WRONG! The insurance company will initially assign nice sweet adjusters but later they will reassign your case to a no nonsense adjuster that will not give an inch. When you are first contacted by an adjuster it will be with respect to the property damage to your car. Many people think it is ok to talk to the adjuster about your case thus explaining how it happened and what hurts. Both your insurance company and that of the at fault driver will make notes of everything you say and your lawyer will not have a clue as to what they wrote down… which may not be what you said. One of the tricks the adjusters often use is to take a picture of the car damage and before snapping the picture they suggest you get in the picture to identify the car as yours. Then they will suggest that you

point to the damage on the Right front quarter panel and at the last second tell you to SMILE! Now they have a picture of you bending over and smiling when the medical reports will explain that you were hurting every day in every way. Is the picture consistent with the damages for which you treated and were described in the medical report? Of course not! Mr. Gribow, In an accident why do I have to go to doctors right away? If you do not see a doctor right after the accident it is presumed you were not hurt. Many of my brethren will not accept a soft tissue accident case (where nothing

is broken) if the injured party did not go to the Hospital, Urgent Care or ER right after the accident. In the worst case scenario, the injured party must see a doctor the next day. You cannot afford to call your doctor and be told they cannot get you in for 3 weeks. You and I may understand that but the insurance company will use that to argue against you. The company will later say, if you were really hurt that much you would have gone to the ER or the Urgent Care center to seek medical assistance before that 3 week period elapsed. Take it from me it will reduce the value of your case if you do these things. In addition the parties in an accident should take down their social media asap. he buyers have found the perfect house and the sellers have accepted the perfect offer and the love fest is about to begin… it is time to “open escrow”! Unlike buying a used car where you meet the seller face to face, drive the vehicle around the block, look under the hood and act like you actually know what you are looking at, kick the tires and hand your money over to the owner in exchange for the pink slip, buying a home and consummating the sale is a much lengthier and more complicated process. To help buyers, sellers, and their agents with the coordination of their transaction an escrow company with a specific escrow officer is hired to do the job. The opening of escrow then is the act of hiring an escrow company and opening an escrow account into which the buyer’s good faith deposit is placed and specific instructions are given to the escrow officer (“escrow instructions”). So far, so good, but do we really need an escrow company, escrow officer, and an escrow account? YES! If it wasn’t for the buyers getting a loan, the need for a preliminary title report and

explaining the defense attorneys have less work to do defending these cases since they can learn everything about the injured parties by getting on their Facebook etc. If they see comments about your playing golf or tennis the next day or pictures of you going “ off roading” or hiking the Bump and Grind Trail etc. it suggests to the defense AND THE JURY that you were not hurt that badly and you might be exaggerating your symptoms. If you wait too long to treat with a doctor, the defense will argue “how do we know your treatment, 3 weeks later”, was from the accident rather than your having slipped around the pool or in the shower and you are taking advantage of this case. what to do? Each transaction is different and so each escrow will have its own set of escrow instructions. A few years ago as soon as I had a purchase contract signed by both the buyer and seller I would take the buyer’s good faith deposit check and a copy of the contract to the escrow company and open escrow. The escrow officer would take all of the information from the purchase contract and create the escrow instructions that basically said exactly the same thing that was on the contract. Today the standard CAR (California Association of Realtors) purchase contract form is titled “Residential Purchase Agreement and Escrow Instructions” combining the contract and escrow instructions into one document. When using this form to open escrow, the escrow companies will usually add a set of supplemental instructions designed specifically for their company, but basically reiterating in the form of instructions to themselves what the buyer and seller have agreed to in their contract. Who pays the escrow company for their services? Rodney Dangerfield in the movie

Caddy Shack slipped the golf referee a wad of cash and said “keep it fair!” Well to keep it fair and to keep a third party neutral it is customary for the buyer and seller to split the fees 50/50 or as we use on the contracts today, “each to pay their own fees”. Escrow companies play an integral role in today’s transactions and their fees are well earned. Buyers and sellers should get to know their escrow officer and feel comfortable asking for help or any questions that they may have regarding their transactions. This week’s real estate tip: Selecting the escrow company for your transaction is a negotiable item in your contract. Your agent will recommend an escrow company, but it is up to you to approve the selection. Winds Bring More Than a Fire Threat!

ildfires are not the only hazard we have to concern ourselves with during High Winds. Flying debris, power outages and personal safety are also a big concern. The safest place to be during high winds is indoors. Watch for flying debris. Tree limbs may break and street signs and objects may become loose during strong wind gusts. Take cover next to a building or under a shelter. Stand clear of roadways or train tracks, as a gust may blow you into the path of an oncoming traffic. Report any downed power lines. Do not touch and/or try to remove lines. Consider any as live! Power outages may be

Have enough food, water and supplies (including medication) for up to 72 hours in case of power outages. Clean your roofs, gutters, and decks from leaves needles and twigs as these are very combustible and have likely accumulated with the recent winds. By Bruce cathcart title insurance, the seller’s disclosures, the buyers inspections, termite reports, natural hazard and environmental disclosures, preliminary change of ownership forms, tax forms and much more, technically the buyer could just hand the seller a suitcase full of cash and the seller could just hand the buyer the deed to the home. But even that poses a bit of a problem as Indiana Jones discovered when he found himself at the bottom of a pit pleading, “throw me the rope and I will throw you the idol”. In the case of a real estate transaction it goes, “give me the money and I’ll give you the deed, no give me the deed and THEN I’ll give you the money!” This is where a neutral third party comes in. This is where the escrow company comes in. The buyer (and their lender if the buyer is getting a loan to purchase the home) put the money into escrow and the seller puts the signed deed into escrow. After all of the conditions of the escrow have been met, the escrow company then records the deed through the title company with the county recorder’s office. The escrow officer then distributes the funds to the seller after paying off any existing loans and all of the transaction’s closing costs. Escrow not only coordinates all of the paperwork and different participants in the transaction, but they do all of the accounting as well issuing the buyers, sellers, and agents a final accounting called a “closing statement” at the end of each transaction. I can’t speak for Jones’ motivations, but one of the reasons I do my nature shows is because they bring out my wild, innocent, generous spirit. You’re the hero, of course. Give yourself a few superpowers, and assemble a cast of scoundrels from your past -- anyone who has done you wrong. Then watch the epic tale unfold as you do with them what Bruce Lee did to Dracula and company. Yes, it’s only pretend. But you may be surprised at how much this helps you put your past behind you. Think of it as a purgative meditation that will free you to move in the direction of the best possible future. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): After studying the myths and stories of many cultures throughout history, Joseph Campbell arrived at a few conclusions about the nature of the human quest. Here’s one that’s apropos for you right now: “The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.” He came up with several variations on this idea, including this one: “The very cave you are afraid to enter turns out to be the source of what you are looking for.” I urge you to consider making this your operative hypothesis for the coming weeks, Pisces. ith each and every thing we project in life, integrity should be applied. In your relationships with your spouse, friends, family and those in the workplace, moral character is sure to reveal itself. How we conduct our lives, treat others, and how we allow others to treat us can be a concise reality check. Random House dictionary defines integrity as: 1) Adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty. 2) The state of being whole, entire, or undiminished. 3) A sound, unimpaired, or perfect condition. Integrity can be a tough act to follow for some. Why? Everyone defines integrity differently. Perhaps we massage the definition to our own desires. One person may think falsifying or embellishing is acceptable. Others would define this as betrayal or dishonesty. How do you view cheating on an exam? According to the Harvard Business Review, a survey conducted suggests 95% of students admit to engaging in some form of cheating while in college. What an astonishing number! The students rationalized their behavior as, “no big deal”, “everyone else does,” or “it wasn’t really cheating.” If you did not realize consequences to your actions, does this give you the courage to cheat again? It seems to me, if you were not caught in the act, you might repeat your actions. Have you experienced in small and large businesses a statement is generally made about integrity. “Our company proudly conducts themselves with integrity…,” “Our team acts with integrity in all we do…” It is omnipresent. Lack of integrity dominates the headlines in our news every night. We constantly hear about people making poor choices. The long-term effects can damage self-respect, personal accountability, and our reputation. Integrity will enhance your overall lifestyle. It is a choice. When we choose to live with making the right choices, (not

cheating or lying to others to benefit ourselves), there is freedom. Obviously as humans we are imperfect. As you reflect upon moments in your life you may have recognized your integrity lapsed a time or two. Or, you were the brunt of another persons’ lack of candor. When we live with integrity we never have to question ourselves. Living your life true to your word followed by your actions will afford you prosperity. It also shows you are dependable, a positive role model, and you can be trusted. Therefore, your values will shine and others will recognize this and want to be close to you. This is the ultimate compliment. Propagating your integrity is important. Constantly define your values. Be sure to analyze the choices you are making. If your actions could harm another, reevaluate. People with strong morals, ethics and integrity are generally humble, selfconfident and exude a high self-esteem. If this sounds like you, keep up the great work! veryone has heard of Botox but what exactly is it and what can it do for you? With real, noticeable results, no surgery and no recovery time, there are many reasons why BOTOX® Cosmetic has been chosen by millions of patients and their doctors. Botulinum toxin (BOTOX®) is a material that has been known for over a century and used for medical purposes for more than 50 years. Its initial medical uses were for treating muscle spasms. In 2002, it was approved for improving and relaxing frown lines in the area between the eyes on the forehead (the glabella) and has been used successfully in millions of patients since that time. A common misconception is that BOTOX® actually paralyzes the muscles in the face. Patients should know that BOTOX® is not used to keep them from expressing themselves but simply to keep them from making facial grimaces and frowns that have become habits and are unintended. When done correctly, most people will not notice that a BOTOX® procedure has been performed but simply that the patient looks more rested or happier. During the Procedure: The patient is placed in an upright position and the areas to be injected are cleansed. After this, Dr. Lombardo injects BOTOX® into the desired areas. Typical injection patterns include about 4 or 5 areas on each side of the forehead and 2 or 3 areas on either eye area. More areas can be injected depending on the type of wrinkles and the desired effect for the patient. It is common for pressure to be applied if an area seems to be bleeding after the injection. After the Procedure: After the injections, the patient should avoid vigorous activity or lying down for 2-4 hours. If bruising is a concern, it will be important for the patient to avoid taking aspirin or related products, such as ibuprofen (e.g., Advil) or naproxen (e.g.,

Aleve) if possible before the procedure to keep bruising to a minimum. Results will be evident within 3-5 days. The patient should realize that BOTOX® does not actually erase lines but relaxes them. What this means is that deeper lines will become somewhat less deep and superficial lines will nearly disappear. This can be likened to the act of steaming a garment’s wrinkles rather than ironing them. It may be necessary for the patient to have additional procedures, such as the use of filler substances (e.g., Restylane, Juvederm) in order to plump up the wrinkles that are now relaxed. Additionally, it may be necessary to have 2 or 3 sessions of BOTOX® treatment for deeper wrinkles before results become optimal. Botox is not for use in patients who are allergic to eggs or if the patient is pregnant. Results: Effects tend to last in most people for up to 3-6 months. As time passes, the muscle activity will gradually return to normal. Results can vary depending on who is performing the injection on the patient. It is very important to go to a physician who is experienced at this procedure, does it herself (rather than having a nurse, physician’s assistant [PA], or other nonphysician do it), and has a good reputation for performing this type of procedure. The manufacturers of BOTOX® recommend physicians inject the medication themselves. At Lombardo Cosmetic Surgery, Dr. Maria Lombardo does all of the injections personally. uring my many years in human resources I was responsible for recruiting a boatload of talented employees. Without the benefit of scanning software the task of sorting through the tons of resumes that reached my desk was an extremely time consuming process. Over the years I trained my eyes to quickly scan the documents searching out keywords much as filtering software would. Although many applicants could benefit from a lesson in resume writing, the cover letters bored me to tears. It was a rare find when a cover told me something I could not glean from the accompanying resume. The downside was time wasted for me and the person who authored it. You might be wondering if you should even bother with a cover letter. The answer is you bet! In fact, I believe a brief well written note accompanying your online resume submission may be more important than ever. Note the keywords here are brief and well written. Although most communication is done online or in email form, the term cover letter equates to opportunity. It is your chance to tell the employer something they won’t find on your resume. The first step in writing a killer cover letter is to forget about touting your skills and experience. That is the resume’s job. Instead, tell your potential employer how you are going to fix a problem. Are they in dire need of a customer service oriented concierge? Make a sincere claim that you will go the extra distance to pull a rabbit out of a hat in record time. Tell them about your service with a smile philosophy and of your passion for ensuring guests have a great experience while staying at the hotel or resort. Choose your words sparingly and carefully. You are not writing a novella, just two or three concise paragraphs laced with supportive compelling reasons detailing
